Me: *starts a show about teens with TERMINAL illnesses*
Okay, sure but it can't be that bad right?

Just finished watching The Midnight Club, and it feels like there was at least one episode missing off of the end. What was up with the old ghost couple? What was Stanton's actual deal? Who was Stanton talking to on the phone? I don't usually end a Mike Flanagan show with these kinds of questions, and I feel like there was another episode that just wasn't uploaded for some unfathomable reason.

Idk some people mad about ilonka/Kevin but like. They were literally the slow burn of the series? It was really obvious to me personally and I really enjoyed it. I mean I get like wanting it to be either cheri/ilonka or anya/ilonka & spence/Kevin but also like. I really enjoyed the slow burn idk lmfao
Personally I’m a Cheri/ilonka & ilonka/Kevin & Kevin/Spence stan
Cheri and spence being the homo besties like hey my girlfriends partnered w your boyfriend and we’re just besties about it polyamory for the fucking win

My thoughts on
The Midnight Club (2022)
Tumblr media
I just finished watching The Midnight Club last night and couldn't help feel how it was like a beautiful work of art left unfinished. When I started the show, I was really impressed by the way the foundation was laid but several things were left unexplained but we'll get there later.
First off, let's talk about the true essence of the show; the stories. While I absolutely loved the way the characters expressed their unconscious/concious desires through the stories knowing that they wouldn't come true, that the future they paint will continue to remain trapped behind words, I couldn't help but feel that we could've been introduced to this world in a better way.
By the time we learn about Natsuki's story regarding the Japanese myth, it's already progressed into a "frenzy of jump scares" which completely ruined the atmosphere for me and I found myself wanting it to be over as soon as possible.
The next thing I wish to address is Ilonka's character. She is a complex teen who is unable to accept the terminal nature of her life and that she cannot be saved. Initially, I liked her drive to survive but as the episodes carry on, we see her completely lose herself in the desperate attempt to grasp what's left of her life. Her character itself had multiple flaws which were further enhanced by the fact that so many things about her were left unexplained.
Why was Ilonka having visions?
Tumblr media
Was it because of her medication? Maybe. But it could also, be due to her being most open to the spiritual aspect of the place. She openly sought to achieve wellness through the nature and was engrossed by the past which might've manifested in the form of visions. Maybe her sharing these thoughts with Kevin was the reason for his own visions.
Another aspect of the show I really wanted to see were the stories coming together in the end (as we had in the haunting series) but was really underwhelmed. There were too many plot holes which raised a lot of questions.
Who is Dr. Georgina Stanton?
Tumblr media
In the final episode, her ties to the Paragon are hinted at. I personally found myself drawing ties between her and Regina Ballard (Aceso). Regina, upon performing the ritual had lost her hair which kinda made me think if Stanton had also tried to do the same for her son (resulting in the loss of her hair, being the only survivor).
Who are the old ghosts?
Tumblr media
This really got me scratching my head finding answers. Maybe they're yet again manifestations of the negative emotions arising in the kids but I'm not sure. Also, how is Kevin connected to the old woman and why does Ilonka keep seeing her where Kevin is?
All these are left unanswered which really irks the viewers to know more.
(I have not read the books and all my interpretations are solely based on the show)

Well not a story, i thought for some reason that natsuki wasn’t depressed until after her diagnosis. But her being diagnosed after she survived her attempt? Fuck

Confession: I haven't watched any of @flanaganfilm's films.
I'm obsessed with the miniseries he's done & I could watch The Haunting series a thousand times & never get tired of them. I've been meaning to give Hush & Doctor Sleep a go & just keep missing the opportunity to 2-birds-one-stone them with my husband & my sister.
I'm waiting so patiently for The Fall of the House of Usher & I'm being SO NORMAL ABOUT IT.
I think the miniseries format has really worked fantastically well for him & allowed for some absolutely stunning, beautifully powerful storytelling. It's also, as we've seen with Midnight Club, a risky format when it's not self-contained to a single season.
Midnight Club was just another reason for me to abhor netflix. Another nail in their own coffin that will only drive people away from the service. Certainly can't blame Flanagan for jumping ship with the way they run creatives into the ground. I just don't know that Amazon will be much better. (Though it occurs to me now that maybe since the union was successful, it may be applicable, or could be expanded to cover creators & contract hires, etc, in media departments…🤔)
Anyway having only seen Mike Flanagan's miniseries work so far, I wrote up a response a while back to some peoples' complaints about Bly Manor. Specifically folks were complaining about the supposed use of the "bury your gays" trope - which I wholeheartedly disagree with. It's a long post in & of itself, so I won't get into the whole argument here. I just am so frustrated with people just…throwing that phrase around.
While we did lose the opportunity to see Midnight Club's 2nd season played out on screen with the wonderful cast we got to see spotlighted in the first season(all of whom were simply amazing & I hope I see more of them thriving in similarly awesome roles for a long time), we were given the gift of closure via Flanagan's tumblr blog.
The storyline for Spencer, his journey with AIDS & his eventual recovery & future outside Brightcliffe, surviving & carrying all of his friends' stories & love & dreams along with him…
I loved Theo & Trish in Hill House & that Trish was stubborn enough to out-stubborn one of the Cranes & convince Theo to tear down that wall & let her in. That they reached a point where their relationship could be healthy & stable. I don't believe the House got the rest of them, though I am indeed aware that it's up for interpretation. I reject that kind of bleak reading on principle.
My point here really, is that I have been so impressed with how much love has gone into each of these series. My point is that someone looking at something where a queer character dies & saying "this is bury your gays" shows a distinct lack of understanding of what that trope even is.
Dani & Jamie live out a domestic lesbian dream life together. They live. I don't know how to put this any more plainly for the folks that don't get it. They lived a life together & had their happy ending. & Then one of them died before the other. Because that happens in the real world.
You can take it at face value - Dani & Viola returned to the lake for reasons supernatural; Or you can take it as a metaphor, as a representation of depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc. You can read it as a loved one struggling with mental illness & her partner helping her weather it for years. Yet even still sometimes we lose loved ones to such illnesses anyway.
Regardless, bury your gays is about robbing queer characters of their story. It's about denying them their opportunities to live out a lifetime the way cishet characters usually get to.
Flanagan has done a pretty excellent job so far of NOT doing that. Period. That's a truly significant part of what I love about his series, and why I'm so excited for more.

I think part of them knew the ritual wouldn’t work, and that it was a bad idea. But what it ultimately boiled down to was an outpouring of love for Anya, surrounded by her friends, and if that’s the last thing she remembers, then it’s not a horrible way to go.

Midnight Club
Very good. If you like horror and having your heart torn from your chest, I highly recommend watching.
Each little short story really encapsulates the character that tells it. You really get a feel for who they are and what’s important to them. Trying to stay spoiler free, but I really loved each and every character. I love flawed characters who don’t always make the right decision. I love when people mess up and come to terms with their mistakes. Good shit. Here’s hoping the story isn’t over!

watched the midnight club and i liked it a lot more than bly manor and a lot less than hill house. the show had the same major issue i have with all of mike flanagan’s work—on-the-nose dialogue and long, sentimental monologues without enough meat in the center for me to actually care about these characters, or what they’re saying. the idea of all people living on through stories (one of mike’s favorite themes lmao) remains compelling, but we didn’t stay with the characters enough to understand why they wanted to share them.
some of the relationships in this show also felt like Statements rather than genuine connections between people, which hindered the narrative overall for me. the pacing also felt a little wonky toward the end, but i think my dissatisfaction is mostly a taste issue this time around. if you liked his other shows, i think you’ll like this one too. (it should also be said that the actors do a really spectacular job and sold me on parts of the script i didn’t like as much.)
