Mid Year Book Freakout Tag
yes this is mostly a youtube thing. but im doing it. i want to
Rules: answer the questions, tag some people, have fun! or don't. i'm not the boss of you
What's the best book you've read so far in 2022?
I haven't technically finished it, but The Lies Of Locke Lamora, 100%. It's fun, fantastical, adventurous, amazingly written, and heart-crushing :D
What's the best sequel you've read so far in 2022?
RULE OF WOLVES BY LEIGH BARDUGO
Best 2022 release you've read so far?
I've only read two 2022 releases, but probably The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School. It was a fun read that knew how to pack some punches in there, and I read it in like a day.
What's a 2022 or otherwise recent release you want to get to?
Probably Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor. I just finished the author's other book, and I'm interested what her middle grade writing is like. (I'm on a quest to figure out if I like Xiran Jay Zhao's books or not.) Plus, it sounds super fun.
What's your most anticipated release for the second half of the year?
Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong!!!! I haven't finished her debut, These Violent Delights, yet, however I love it so far and FLF sounds like a super cool premise. (I'll have to finish the TVD series first, though, since I think FLF spoils it.)
What's the most disappointing book you've read this year?
This is Not the Jess Show. It was just... underwhelming, with a predictable plot and flat characters.
What book surprised you the most? (In a good or bad way.)
The Heartstopper volumes by Alice Oseman! I didn't expect to like them as much as I did, but they ended up being super fluffy and adorable (part of the reason I actually thought I wouldn't like them, lol). 10/10 recommend if you like romance and graphic novels.
What's the book you've read or bought/received this year with the most beautiful cover?
White Smoke by Tiffany D. Jackson. Like, the story inside was good and all, but the cover.... it's amazing. God tier.
What books do you hope to read before the year is over?
haha.... hahahaha..... uh
gideon the ninth, on earth we're briefly gorgeous, crime and punishment, sal & gabi number two, the locke lamora sequels, the poppy war, spy x family vol 1, a gathering of shadows, and going postal.
~
I don't actually know who would and wouldn't be interested in doing this tag, so I'm leaving it open. If you do it because you saw my post, please tag me! I'd love to hear about what other people are reading.

MID YEAR BOOK FREAK OUT TAG 2022
So, everyone usually does this tag around this time of the year so I am doing it here.
1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2022
This year has been bad in terms of 5 star reads for me, but I have two very different books to answer this question:
The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw
This is a short story collection with 9 stories about the relation between black women and religion, sexuality and other women in their family. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Janina Edwards and highly recommend it. I really liked all of the short stories and that is a rarity in these kind of books.
Sistersong by Lucy Holland
I admit this one is because it was just my cup of tea. It took me some chapters to get into the simple writing style, but I really ended up enjoying the characters and the atmosphere of this retelling of the twa sisters ballad. It has mysterious magic, complicated relationships between siblings, a master and apprentice plot, a love story, a story about friendship... the cherry on top is that it has a trans main character and another genderfluid character and I really love queerness in my fantasy books (something that I am even more sure of this year).
2. Best sequel you've read so far in 2022
Carpe Jugulum by Terry Pratchett
It is no secret that I fell more in love with Discworld after reading Hogfather and Carpe Jugulum became my 2nd favourite Discworld book so far. I also managed to finish at least the Witches series in the Discworld. This one has amazing interactions between the witches, compelling villains, a character battling with their religious belief, Agnes accepting herself and her physical flaws, Granny Weatherwax battling with the darkness that has always been inside of her... it got dark at times while addressing tropes in vampire stories and it was amazing. Plus, it was also funny of course.
3. New release you haven't read yet, but want to
Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel
This is a retelling of the Ramayana, which I admit I know nothing about. I read and enjoyed the first chapter. It's firs person perspective, which is always a plus for me, and I've heard that the main character is asexual. I am also curious about a fantasy book set in India so I really want to get to this one soon.
Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart
A book about a relationship between 2 boys, Mungo, a protestant, and James, a catholic. I heard it's gay, emotional and set in Scotland. I don't need much more than that, but I would be lying if I didn't say my love for the show Derry Girls also didn't influence me to pick this book up.
A Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I. Lin
The concept sounds really interesting. Magic + tea + poison? Sounds great. It seems like it will be a fun time and the cover is gorgeous. The reason why I didn't got to it yet it's because it seems like it will be a duology and the 2nd book also comes out this year (which scares me a little because it's too soon, to be honest, but I hope it will be ok).
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
Babel, or The Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by R.F. Kuang
Like most people, I also want to check this one out after enjoying the Poppy War trilogy. It being about translation worries me a bit, but I am confident the author knows what she is talking about.
Into the Riverlands by Nghi Vo
Of course I want to read the third installment in the Singing Hills Cycle after enjoying the first two books. These also always have gorgeous covers.
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez
I've heard many good things about this already and about the authors previous book, The Vanished Birds. I must say the synopsis of this new release appeals to me more so I want to start with this one. I've heard that the writing is really good and that the story is emotional. It also has a gorgeous cover.
Daughter of Redwinter by Ed McDonald
I really want to try this author given that I enjoyed the first chapter of Blackwing and of this new book too. He always leaves me curious about certain aspects of the world from the get go which is an unusual thing to happen with me. Plus, I heard bisexual main character... I just hope it's better than the way Mark Lawrence and Jay Kristoff handle that.
5. Biggest disappointment
Fledling by Octavia E. Butler
This one really upset me because Butler is one of my favourite authors and I couldn't even finish this one. I am used to having complicated and "problematic" relationships in her books, but I am not able to read graphic sex scenes between an adult man and a ten year old girl even if the text says she is actually older than the man. She is still in the body of a 10 year old girl. Even if the text says the adults get attracted to her partly because of her powers. Still a 10 year old girl's body. I am a visual reader and I could get past the first sex scene with a lot of difficulty. At the second one I stopped the book. I was never this disappointed my an author before. The worst part is that Butler wrote this for fun while trying to come up with the third Earthseed book. I am glad this was the only one she wrote for fun because we have a different take on what that word means.
Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro
If I needed any more proof this year sucks reading wise, I just need to check what I read by my favourite authors and find that they also disappointed me. Nocturnes is a collection of five stories about music and relationships that seemed to have been written by Taylor Jenkins Reid instead of Ishiguro. It lacked his usual reflective style and felt superficial. I am starting to think I don't like books about music because I never seem to enjoy books about musicians. The main problem is the idea people have of musicians that revolves around drugs, sex, having affairs, etc. I don't like to read about that and if that is what stories about music are I am not interested. The only good book about music I read was Martine découvre la musique when I was a kid!
Son of the Shadows by Juliet Marillier
This one was a reread and I liked it once. The first time I read it, I gave it 4 stars and now it is a 2. I have no idea how past me forgave the amount of sexism and the incest in this one. No idea how I thought the main characters was so cool like every character said she was instead of seeing how awful she was especially to her sister. The reason the book is not 1 star is because unfortunately I still like Marillier's atmospheric writing, but I am getting tired of stories that insist that there is a specific way that men and women are like.
PS: I was also disappointed by the short story collection Harrowing the Dragon by Patricia A. McKillip, another one of my favourite authors. At least that one was still 3 stars though and not as bad as the three above.
6. Biggest surprise
Book Lovers by Emily Henry
I seldom like contemporary OR romance books so contemporary romance seems like a match made in hell for me. That is why I was surprised by how much I enjoyed my time reading this book. I even laughed a few times. But then I saw some romance readers saying this wasn't really a romance because it focused to much on other stuff that was not the romantic relationship. Well, that is what I liked so much about it and if other romance books really are like the other ones I tried instead of this then I am back to disliking them. I gave this book 5 stars just because it managed to entertain me with all the odds against it and therefore it deserves it. However, I don't think I will attempt a contemporary romance book ever again unless it is written by this author and I happen to be in a specific mood.
The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo
Similar to what I wrote above. This is a contemporary YA book written in verse. All the things that don't appeal to me at all and yet this was great. I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author and it was so emotional and felt so personal that I was amazed. After this I had to listen to Clap When You Land and With The Fire on High and they are all pretty much the same quality, even though this one is still my favourite and I had to buy the paperback after.
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)
Sadly, I have none. In the past 2 or 3 years I had already found at least one new favourite at this point, but this year has been really bad in terms of reading. Plus, I only consider someone a favourite author after reading at least 3 books by them and rated them 4 or 5 stars so... it's an hard status to get.
8. Newest fictional crush
I have no fictional crushes so I am going to replace this with my favourite romance and that I know the answer to. Fainne and Darragh from Child of the Prophecy by Juliet Marillier. They are about the same age (which unfortunately is a rarity in the Sevenwaters books) and have known each other since they were children. They don't even spend that much time together in the book, but it is clear to me that they are devoted to each other. Fainne is a sort of unlikeable main character and she does some awful things because of jealousy or revenge but that is exactly why I like her (and I find funny that most readers don't). Darragh is a traveller and he says the same cute goodbye line to Fainne every time they have to be separated and he always manages to find her whenever she is and understand when she is lying and needs him. Yeah, I am cheesy like that. I like the sadness of being apart with the cute small moments of the characters being together and I like when they know each other so well they speak without words. That is what I love and I really enjoyed their relationship.
9. Newest favorite character
I don't really have a new favourite character. I love Nikanj and Granny Weatherwax but they were already favourites last year. I like a lot of characters when I am reading the books, but achieving favourite status is not easy.
10. Book that made you cry
I haven't been crying while reading books this year because very few got me that emotionally invested, but I do think I teared up a little while listening to the Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo and maybe while reading Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura.
11. Book that made you happy
Lady Susan by Jane Austen. Lady Susan is awful and hilarious. I had a really good time with that short book.
Maskerade by Terry Pratchett was also really funny as someone that knows The Phantom of the Opera and it was always great to see characters hate opera in a book all about that.
12. Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or received)
Tumblr media
I recently bought this book and keep staring at it because it's so damn beautiful. I hope the content is good until the end too because damn this is an amazing cover (and title).
13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
Besides the ones, I already mentioned here, I really want to get to:
Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
Cloven Hooves by Megan Lindholm
Midnight in Everwood by M.A. Kuzniar
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante
The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold
Besides that, I want to finish:
The Sevenwaters series (the 3 books I have left) by Juliet Marillier
The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu
Upstream: Selected Essays by Mary Oliver
The Bitter Twins (and possible the 3rd book too) by Jen Williams
The Folding Knife by K.J. Parker
Wolfblade by Jennifer Fallon

Mid Year Book Tag!
This is a well loved set of book prompts that I believe originated on youtube, but it's fun to do here as well :)
1.Best book you've read so far: A Day of Fallen Night by Samatha Shannon, without a doubt. This may end up my favorite of the year and I was incredibly impressed by this book.
2.Best sequel you've read so far: Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn. This is book 2 to the Legendborn cycle, and I liked the sequel even better than book 1.
3.New Release you haven't read yet but want to: Yellowface by RF Kuang, since Kuang is on her way to becoming a new favorite author for me. Also, Lone Woman by Victor laValle, since anything laValle writes is brilliant.
4.Most anticipated release for the second half of the year? Starling House by Alix E Harrow or All The Hidden Paths by Foz Meadows
5.Biggest Disappointment: The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi, I really disliked this book and it was a dnf.
6.Biggest Surprise: Keikeyi by Vashnavi Patel, I was a little unsure how much I would like this novel, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit.
7. Favorite new author: Tracy Deonn for sure!
8.Newest Fictional Crush: Wendall Brambly (from Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries). (Also Darlington (from Hell Bent) but he's not a 'new' character for this year, so he doesn't really count)
9.Newest Favorite Character: Dumai from A Day of Fallen Night (and Wulf from adofn too)
10.Book that made you cry: How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu
11.A Book that made you happy: A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall
12. Favorite Adaptation: The Expanse. I read book 7 this spring, but the TV show is a fantastic adaptation.
13. Prettiest Cover: The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty
14. A book you need to read before the end of the year: The Poppy War trilogy by RF Kuang.

🌻 Mid-Year Freakout Tag 2023🌻
I’ve been on a brief hiatus, but I’m back with my favorite tag of the year!
1.  How many books have you read so far?
I’ve read 15 books (so far!).
2. What genres have you read?
Fantasy, historical fantasy, historical fiction, historical romance, romance, and LGBTQ+ fiction.
3. Best book you’ve read so far in 2023
A Marvellous Light and A Restless Truth by Freya Marske, In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan, and Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett (all of which I rated 5/5 stars).
4. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2023
A Restless Truth by Freya Marske. It exceeded all of my (already admittedly high) expectations.
5. New release you haven’t read, but want to
Tim Te Maro and the Subterranean Heartsick Blues by H.S. Valley. I preordered it, but my pre-order was delayed due to Indigo’s cyber security incident and I have yet to receive it.
6. Most anticipated release of the second half of the year
You can find my most anticipated releases here.
7. Biggest disappointment
Greywaren by Maggie Stiefvater. The conclusion to the Dream Trilogy and the broader Raven Cycle universe, Greywaren was a highly anticipated release of mine, but I was ultimately underwhelmed by it.
8. Biggest surprise
I’ve largely read within my preferred genres (namely queer historical fiction/fantasy) so I have yet to be surprised by anything. Hopefully I’ll be surprised as I diversify in the coming months!
9. Book that made you cry
No tears have been shed in the reading of these books.
10. Book that made you happy
All of them! However, if I had to choose only one... In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan.
11. Most beautiful cover of a book you’ve read so far this year
Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett, followed closely by A Restless Truth by Freya Marske and In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan. Evidence that we should, indeed, judge a book by its cover. ;)
12. How are you doing with your year’s goals?
I set the (admittedly ambitious) goal to read 50 books (of which I’ve read 15).
13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
My most anticipated releases of 2022, my new year book haul, and my most anticipated releases of the second half of 2023.

Mid-Year Book Freakout 2023
Thank you for taggin me @books-are-portals
1. Best book you’ve read so far this year
The Tea Dragon Society by K. O’Neill.
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far this year
I want to be a wall Vol 02 by Honami Shirono
3. New release you haven’t read yet
So many! The most recent book I received is The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by S.A. Chakraborty.
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher
5. Biggest disappointment
The French Chateau Dream by Julie Caplin (and kinda also The Secret Cove in Croatia though I stopped that after about 5 pages because I did not feel in the mood). It is always difficult for me to find romance books I like but I thought that Julie Caplin was another author whose books I would enjoy. Unfortunately, the first book I read from her seems to have been a fluke because the rest was mediocre to bad.
6. Biggest surprise
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna. I did not expect to enjoy the book this much.
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)
Heather Fawcett. I already own several of her books but finally got around to actually reading one this year. And I will continue with the Fetch Philips books by Luke Arnold as audiobooks. I really enjoy his reading.
8. Newest fictional crush/newest favorite character
Not a crush, but I found Kissen in Hannah Kaner’s Godkiller a highly interesting character.
9. Book that made you cry
None so far. But I did get very emotional over The Tea Dragon Society.
10. Book that made you happy
Miss Hazeltine’s Home for Shy and Fearful Cats by Alicia Potter.
I tag @themelodyofspring @emily-reads-books @smalltownfae and @lizziethereader (no pressure!)

Mid-Year Book Freakout 2023
I was tagged by @bibliophilecats and @the-forest-library, thank you two lovelies! (sorry I couldn't get it done mid-year, haha)
1.Best book you’ve read so far this year Silver in the Wood Emily Tesh (a close second is probably Little Thieves + Painted Devils by Margaret Owen)
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far this year Painted Devils by Margaret Owen
3. New release you haven’t read yet Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year I somehow forgot to look at new releases this year, so I don't even have a list, but I guess I'm always excited when a new Brandon Sanderson Secret Project comes out? (so, one more to go)
5. Biggest disappointment the one that won't get me cancelled: Wicked by Gregory Maguire (honestly, what a shitshow) the one that will get me cancelled: Babel by R.F. Kuang (I just don't like when a story is bleak and tragic with no hope…)
6. Biggest surprise Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky, which I picked up on a whim and which was delightful! but also Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, which went totally unexpected places (and was delightful as well)
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you) Margaret Owen and Tracy Deonn
8. Newest fictional crush/newest favorite character both Vanja and Emeric from Little Thieves are great characters!!
9. Book that made you cry I don't think I've done that yet this year, but, weirdly, the one that got me closest might have been A Rover's Story by Jasmine Warga
10. Book that made you happy I've enjoyed many great books so far this year, but I'm not sure enjoying is the same as making happy? I'm not sure a book has "made" me happy…. I do enjoy how gorgeous the leatherbound editions of the Brandon Sanderson Secret Projects are, though!
11. Favorite Adaptation well, thanks to @bookcub I know that Little Thieves is a Goose Girl adaptation, so I'll have to go with that! in terms of movie/series adaptations, I can't say I have a favorite yet
12. Prettiest Cover I can't just choose one, so I'll go for Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh, and also the Graceling series editions I have
13. A book you need to read before the end of the year a great many! But Still Life by Sarah Winman is high on my list
I'm tagging anyone who, like me, just hasn't had the energy or time to do this one yet and feels like they can and want to do it now!

Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag--
1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2022-- I’ve had zero 5 star reads so far this year, but I had a few 4.5 star reads. I reread House of Earth and Blood which I originally rated 4.5 stars. I also read one book this year that I’ve given that rating to which is Kodi by Jared Cullum.
2. Best sequel you've read so far in 2022-- Nemesis Games by James S.A. Corey.  A lot of the focus in this book is Naomi and her past which I found compelling. Not to mention we get to see all of the characters exploring different aspects of this world and their own issues, but they all come back together in the end.
3. New release you haven't read yet, but want to-- Something Wilder by Christina Lauren. I didn’t love the sound of this one when I saw it was coming out this year so I didn’t preorder it, but after hearing some people discuss the book it seems more up my alley than I expected. Also, This Woven Kingdom by Tahereh Mafi. I preordered this one and even took it with me when I was on vacation in Switzerland. But I never got around to diving into it.
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year-- I was hemming and hawing over this question for the longest time, but down in my soul I know my real answer: The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I love her writing and I love this series. I’m also excited for the new Maureen Johnson coming out at the end of the year which is why this was a hard question for me.
5. Biggest disappointment-- Lore Olympus by Rachel Smyth. It’s not my lowest rated book of the year so far, but it did let me down in a big way. This one had so much hype surrounding it that I didn’t pick it up for a long time, but eventually I gave in. I’m willing to continue this one on WebToon, but otherwise it’s not really worth my time.
6. Biggest surprise-- The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. Not to say that this will be a favorite book, but I’m truly surprised I enjoyed this one as much as I did. First of all, it’s 1,200 pages. Insane. I’ve never read a book that long. AND it’s a classic? Who the fuck do I think I am?? But it’s a story of revenge that, after wasting a ton of time locked up in a prison, really captured my attention. And there’s a change in perspective that I didn’t expect but really loved. In the beginning of the novel, the reader knows more about Edmond Dantes’ situation than he does. The reader knows why this is happening and who put the wheels in motion to get him imprisoned for something he never did. But then after he escapes the perspective shifts and Dantes knows more than the reader does. Plus the characters are fully realized in a way I wasn’t expecting. It’s just so good. And...yes I will stop talking about it now.
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)-- I was trying to find a different answer in my spreadsheets, but looking over all the new to me authors from this year so far the only one that stood out was the writing duo James S.A. Corey. The Expanse series has taken over my reading life this year and I love it.
8. Newest fictional crush-- I’m going to avoid using this question since a) I read mostly YA and I’m almost 33 years old so...gross and b) I’m married. But we can use this one as favorite love interest instead. Skyler from Places We’ve Never Been by Kasie West. He’s adorable with Norah and so forgiving of her past mistakes.
9. Newest favorite character-- To change things up I’m going to go with Kodi from Kodi by Jared Cullum. It’s a Children’s graphic novel about a girl who meets and befriends a bear in the Alaskan wilderness. The bear is ADORABLE and at one point, while trying to find his girl again, gets on a boat while wearing an adorable sailor’s outfit. Tell me that’s not cute. Just try to tell me that’s not cute.
10. Book that made you cry-- Staying with Kodi, I’ll say Kodi by Jared Cullum. It’s the only book I’ve read this year so far that actually made me cry.
11. Book that made you happy-- The Last Laugh by Mindy McGinnis. I didn’t give this one the highest rating, but I had such a fun time reading this duology. And I felt like this one wrapped everything up so well.
12. Most beautiful book you've bought (or received) so far this year-- I purchased the collector’s edition of Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey while I was in Switzerland with my husband and his dad. After only having read two of the books and one of the novellas. Thank god I’m still enjoying the rest of the series.
13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?-- I have a stack of books I need to reread before a new book in the series comes out. But outside of that I plan on reading some new releases when they come out and a couple of books on my 40 Books Before 40 list. Some highlights of these lists include: All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman, The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, and Terrier by Tamora Pierce.

🌻 Mid-Year Freakout Tag 2022 🌻
1. How many books have you read so far?
I’ve read 23 books (so far!).
2. What genres have you read?
I’ve read romance, LGBTQ+ fiction, realistic fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and historical fantasy.
3. Best book you’ve read so far in 2022
The best books I’ve read so far are These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever, Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer, and Arrête avec tes mensonges by Philippe Besson (all of which I rated 5/5 stars).
Honorable mentions to Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World by Benjamin Alire Sáenz, A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske, and Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell (all of which I rated 4.5/5 stars).
4. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2022
I’ve only picked up four sequels so far. I DNFed two (Here’s to Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera and Vow of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson) and finished two (Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World by Benjamin Alire Sáenz and Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire). I absolutely adored Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World — even more so than Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe — and Where the Drowned Girls Go was my favorite book in the Wayward Children series thus far.
5. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to
Fangirl, the Manga, Volume 2 by Sam Maggs, Rainbow Rowell, and Gabi Nam, followed closely by I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston.
6. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
You can find my most anticipated releases here and here.
7. Biggest disappointment
There have been quite a few disappointments, most recently My Policeman by Bethan Roberts.
8. Biggest surprise
The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer. It wasn’t a surprise in the sense that I didn’t expect to enjoy it, but rather that I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did and for the reasons I did.
9. Underrated gems
These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever and The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer. How have only 6,000-8,000 people read and rated/reviewed these?!
10. Book that made you cry
A lot of the books I’ve read made me emotional, but none of them made me cry.
11. Book that made you happy
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske. An absolute delight to read.
12. Most beautiful book cover of a book you’ve read so far this year
Gallant by V.E. Schwab, followed closely by A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske.
13. How are you doing with your year’s goals?
My initial goal was to read 72 books this year, but my new goal is to read 50 books this year. I adjusted it (based on my reading rate) in order for it to be attainable. I am almost halfway through my new goal!
14. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
I want to read all 40 books that I physically own. Initially, I wanted to do so by the end of the summer, but now I’m hoping to do so by the end of the year. Of course, that doesn’t account for the kindle books that I own, upcoming releases, and other books that are sure to distract me...

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag 2022
Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag 2022
Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag 2022 I was reminded watching one of my favourite BookTuber’s channel today that I hadn’t yet completed the annual Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag for 2022 yet! I looked back and noticed that I completed it on 16th July last year which made me laugh because it is the 16th July today so it would be rude not to compile the tag this very day, wouldn’t it? 😉 1. best book…

Mid-Year Reading Update
Tagged by @ninja-muse thank you!! :)
Amount of books you’ve read so far: 86
Best book you’ve read so far in 2022: Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2022: I haven’t loved any actual second-book sequels, but in terms of “part of a series that isn’t book one”, I’d probably go with Sword and Pen by Rachel Caine
New release you haven’t read yet but want to: Seasonal Fears by Seanan McGuire
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: The lost metal by Brandon Sanderson
Biggest disappointment: there have, unfortunately been quite a few. The ones I had the highest hopes for was The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski
Biggest surprise: Piranesi by Susanna Clarke (I thought it wouldn’t really have plot and just be pretty, but it proved me wrong!)
Favorite new author (debut or new to you): I don’t have very strong feelings about my answer to this question, but I will definitely check out more of  Kacen Callender‘s stuff
Newest fictional crush: can’t say I have one...
Newest favorite character: nobody really comes to mind here, either
Book that made you cry:Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt (good stuff!!)
Book that made you happy: Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender (yes, I’m doubling up, I know, but this is just so wholesome)
Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell (which has the gorgeous golden H embossed on the actual hardcover as well!)
What books do you need to read by the end of the year?: I have a list of books I finally want to get to and some I plan to read for Beat the Backlist, but nothing I feel strongly enough about to say I need to read them
Tagging: anyone who wants to do this!
