I'm just going to say it. Coming back to Homestuck now when seven years ago I was a brainrotted teen talking about Jake English and his gender issues, his sexual promiscuity towards those he is obviously not capable of being attracted to (Women), and his weirdly specific need yet hatred to sexualize himself in ways other than, like, spreading his legs...... Learning about how Hussie initially wrote him as a literal grooming victim (to Charlie fucking Chaplin God) makes everything fit into place too perfectly.
I'm simultaneously vindicated yet wondering why I have to be right about everything. I don't think it'd baffle me as much if my unpopular (at the time) headcanon of him turning to alcoholism based off of really specific Hiveswap details and just personal experience wasn't like. Basically "canonized" in his alpha self as well. Hussie is obsessed with the lore of the character he hates the most.

I read first chapter of that new fic and I'm going bananas and later plan to give a big ass comment on ao3. But for now I must say that I'm fascinated by this version of Alpha Dave Strider because in most fanworks I saw it was b! Dirk=abuse and a! Dave=good brother. But there he is truly a shitshow of a loser, who is trying so hard to appear cool in front of his little brother in the most bizzare ways. What's his deal? Plus I looove that this fic is Dirk pov. It makes me question everyone motives and what they say even more because for Dirk sucks at reading people. Especially close to him. Especially if it's Jake and his feelings for him and anything that Jake could feel for him.

Yeah I personally see alpha Dave as someone who should not raise a child ever! Just like beta Dirk. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts about Dirkjake relationship during void session. I think that what hurts my heart the most is that during that ONE chat where they talk to each other (kind of), there is such... Sweetness in them. They are both a piles of mess but clearly caring about each other.
Plus the fact that Jake told Dirk about how his Grandma died and how he burned her corpse drives me insane. First and the only person to even know.
I feel like essence of DirkJake being able to stay together is accept that normal typical relationship just wouldn't work for them and sometimes Jake needs to dissappear to be hag in the woods. And Dirk needs at least sometimes to have his moments straight from some Gothic novel where Jake would promise to eat his ashes or something like that.

No because LITERALLY THIS. This is Dirkjake at its essence for me, they're fucking insane with each other but they're SO much worse off without each other. No typical relationship model would ever fit them, imo, but that's what's so good about them as a couple! They thrive in the inherent codependency and toxicity and it's just! The only way they can ever be happy, even when they aren't. God they make me insane.
They're just, so personally intertwined with each other in every way, the closest pair (imo) of all of the kids, and to see it break apart because of things outside of their control and the whole... well. I suppose The Dirk Thing is up to personal interpretation but to me? It's always been a cut and dry "Jake does not like adventuring, Dirk does. Dirk wants to cater to what he 'thinks' Jake likes, even when he knows he's exhausting him and making him do something he doesn't enjoy. Nobody is happy, but hey, at least Dirk likes raiding tombs—no wait Jake where are you going come back—" Add a Dirk into the mix that cannot physically handle the way Jake makes him feel (vulnerable, mostly, especially in regards to personal touch and feelings jams) and you get a whole lot of horny and a whole little of what Jake actually wanted—to spend time with his boyfriend, doing boyfriend things.
It's essentially the fault of Dirk going into things with Jake asking him out assuming already that he bullied him into dating him and thinking it best to hold off on anything riskier (except on the numerous times he can't help himself), just because he doesn't want to drive away the person that actually makes him feel human. He basically digs his own grave. Like, of course Jake was going to break! Was that even a relationship? Did Dirk even like him at all? It's so AGGHHHHHH
But like. Yeah. I have a lot of thoughts, probably an infinite amount. You get a lot of added Jake context if you see him as a borderline who just starts splitting like a madman when he's 100+ days in without a break from doing ADVENTURES and his boyfriend cannot figure out for the life of him that he just wants a kiss. He just wants a kiss!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And he will ask for one, and Dirk will never put the pieces together that maybe he should open up a little more to his boyfriend that actually likes him.

The thing about Jake is that his trans narrative reads very similar whether you hc him as AFAB or AMAB (at least imo.) Jake's entire character is about him learning to accept who he is (a girly motherfucker) instead of the manly man he thinks he has to be. I think every instance of Jake will ALWAYS identify some part with girlhood and for transmasc Jake this is absolutely no exception. Doesn't make him any less genderfucked in the head, though.
So yes. I love this. It makes a shit ton of sense for his character. Even his name being Fucking Jake is giving extreme transmasc. Also Dirk loves it but that is truly a tale for another day

Sometimes I wonder if it's an overreaction to read Dirk Strider having NPD as textually canonical and then I remember Ultimate Dirk killing himself because he wouldn't be relevant, concluding that everything other than being killed as an awesome sexy Big Bad (such as living a nice, wholesome life with the love of his life in many written forms—there is no way that he cannot access AO3) is just as good as LITERALLY nothing at all. Short and sweet answer: projection! Projection is always an acceptable answer. Answer this for everything. Nobody can stop you.
Full answer: I cannot see Jake, Dirk, and even Roxy, in any typical school settings, like... At all. For Dirk and Roxy, I usually go for online schooling in modern settings, which I imagine Mr. Harley would have enrolled them both in if it weren't for primitive technology.
With Jake we go straight to Jade. I imagine Jade was self-taught about most everything as well, and, quite obviously never attended any form of school. Likely, that would have stemmed from Grandpa Harley and his own views on it being nonessential. Grandpa ran away from home when he was thirteen; if he WAS attending school at that point, he certainly stopped in 1923.
He then went on to make Skaianet SOMETHING of his own thing, even when his mother could not disagree more. As a knowledgeable world-renowned explorer type, he was arguably better off without school. I can't imagine his vague "learning disability" would have ever done him well in just about any institutional setting, either, and there's a lot of his "incompetence" in handling his company that you can probably connect the dots to his autism (or more Hussie's casual ableism) as well.
I really like how Jade especially is treated as very intelligent and capable despite only having Grandpa there to teach her. I also love how Grandma English followed in his footsteps, and likely never made a return to school. She's typically touted as a better guardian, but I don't think I can reason with myself that she TAUGHT Jake as much about the world and its intricacies like Grandpa Harley did for Jade. Jade was never an explorer, and probably never went to Alternia, after all. There's a lot that could be said about how little she taught him, actually, for better or for worse. He knew how to build a robot with Dirk's supervision, but he should have logically known more.
...Which just goes to show that he never even took to his dear grandma's way of teaching, seeing as she likely tried to inform him about what little she could before the sudden passing that she almost definitely expected. Jake simply isn't good with mathy subjects, or science, or robotics, really. He is the autism, it is him.
There's a ton of reasons I could give for including some variation of Grandpa's dropping out or Jake's lack of schooling altogether in my works of fiction, some taken right out of the canon material itself, but this is essentially what I base my personal decisions for his character off of. ^O^

As far as hills I'm willing to die on I personally read self-hating man with NPD Dirk as a more or less textual fact, as well as Jake being accidentally written with quiet BPD as, like, just a thing that Is. This goes for their splinters and any AU versions I have for them as well, though I also tend to write Dirk with (obviously) ASPD traits because he has them and it is glorious. Comorbidity for the win!
Also they are both autistic, Jake probably has some undiagnosed attention disorder as well. I cannot imagine anybody in hs actually being professionally diagnosed, which is funny. I'm not sure if all of them are set in stone for me but some other characters that are giving borderline for better or for worse would be John (for better), Eridan (for worse), Aranea (not very textual at all I just like a blabbermouth girl with BPD), Lynera (see Aranea), Nepeta (cute), Kankri (good lord), and I also think it would be fucking hilarious if Jude started developing signs of it from the apple of borderline autism falling straight down onto his head. If I'm feeling spicy I'll give all of the Harlenglishcrockerberts a flavor of borderline insanity though.
My girlfriend can just retweet her takes if she feels like it on her special mental illnesses but ASPD Sollux is very important to me (and Cronus. And Dammek. And Lanque. And Dave. Tyzias. Equius? And a lot of others that I don't think about often enough.) Less textual and more "I like this :3"
I like a lot of things :3 but yes these are what I like THE MOST! And likewise I don't care for takes that are like, batshit opposite to them, but Homestuck is just like that and I cannot be arsed to argue about something that matters this little. Like what you like and project what you project ^_^

In omegaverse au Dirk and Jake would try to matetrap each other. Just pull the wildest tricks so Dirk would finally have a good reason to bite and mate Jake so they finally could be together forever, no way to run. I can see then try babytrap each other buuuut they shouldn't have kids.
But yeah, both of them are stupid, not getting that the other wants it too BUT telling themselves thst it doesn't matter because AFTER mating of course everything is gonna be OK.
They shouldn't have kids. Unfortunately Dirk is not a good person sometimes and that will not stop him I don't think. Also you unlocked the part of my brain that has a huge thing for the "two bros fucking in omegaverse without admitting their feelings for each other" trope.
Idk there's just something especially foul about Dirk tampering with his meds consistently and replacing them with empty capsules, and then inviting Jake for a proper scruff just to get him worked up and sweating. And then he suddenly just has Jake aaaaall to himself because it's not like he can leave in this state, he's SEXY sexy. Man wouldn't last a second going home. And the entire time Jake just... knowing that Dirk had to have done something but also, kind of being really into it? Because he's sick in the head.

1.I read your hc about Alpha Kids education and I wonder how much of Grandma English not telling Jake about HIC was because she thought she still had more time. Like he was still very little when she died. But at the same time for me it makes Jake look very sharp that he managed to survive on that island. Buuut yeah, he wouldn't survive normal school (mood).
2. Im really curious if you have hc about Jake relationship with Jade? I'm still sad that them being penpals and clearly friends for years was ignored in Homestuck. They build murderbunny together! Best bonding time ever. Plus I bet that Dirk was veeeeeery jealous that Jake build a ROBOT with SOMEONE ELSE for SOMEONE ELSE.
1. I do think she told him ENOUGH about HIC that, like, he got a helping of generational trauma from both Condy and LE which I love because angst. I do think she would've told him more, though, when he was... you know, older. But I can just as easily see her not going into true graphic detail about the stuff she used to experience. You have Jake remembering vividly about her mother killing her dog, but she told of a more "fantastical" tale despite that detail, curiously enough. Jade has so much she just builds up inside of her that I don't think she'd ever say enough to make Jake feel as truly devastated as she knew he probably would. I imagine she told him about Bec first and foremost, which had Jake spiraling, the poor boy. She tried to tell him what she could without breaking his heart ):
2. I could probably talk about Jade and Jake and their relationship together for fucking ages and all the different dynamics, because imo there's an infinite amount of ways I handle them in my head! In which case I'll probably go into my favorite platonic dynamic for them post-game, which I've done a LOT of thinking over since 2017.
Platonic route aside I love Dirk being jealous of Jade anyway. Jake clearly went to his grandma first and foremost as his main source of comfort after such a traumatizing game and a messy breakup with a hint of sexual assault to boot, and this is more or less Hussie-confirmed! In the epilogues, out of all the direct pairs (John and Jane, Dave and Dirk, Rose and Roxy), Jade and Jake seem to be the absolute closest with each other! And the umm. Well the whole Harlenglish annual orgy thing which is....... MOVING ON!
I think she always ends up seeing him as more of her grandson than she does her grandpa, especially since they know each other as kids and all! Jake, though, just naturally seems to fit into the role of soft submissive boy raised by an awesome woman trope. He greatly idolizes her, just like he canonically does John, who I imagine he saw as more of a "Poppop" than Jane did, seeing as everything Jade told him about dear old John! It's honestly so adorable I could cry! Jake loves his family to bits and pieces and it's so... SO very wholesome.
I have my own ideas about how John would see Dirkjake working out ("EB: how can a black eye be consensual??") but Jade I think definitely Gets It more than anyone. That being said she is so horribly hard on Dirk anyway. That's her baby boy her grandpa her grandson her BROTHER!!! and she will aim a gun at him if he does something fucking stupid (and he does that a lot, I think.) Dirk however respects her to hell and back and he's like. Alright. If my boyfriend's grandma tells me to kill myself I'm gonna respect her wishes, because she's right. A lot of mutual respect remains between them all the same, imo, especially when their main goal is to just see Jake happy. I love them getting closer and starting to talk about their shared interests more than life itself as the years go by.
The conversation when he calls Jade about wanting to get out of his relationship in the candy route is one of my favorite parts between them and says sooooooo much, even if we didn't get it in canon Homestuck proper. He trusts her more than even Roxy, at that point, and that personally says so much to me. Ugh I love them. Even when they're only cousins in some AUs I make, they're always two peas in a pod that almost always share the same bed when they can.
I have some other ideas of course that would be better suited for another post, and some particular details for Grandpa and Jade and Grandma and Jake (likewise, very specific circumstances) but this is how I like to write their relationship in almost every regard. Jane doesn't strike me as very protective at all, much as I love her, but Jade and Jake will defend each other to the ends of the Earth. Jake basically threatened Dave in candy for not giving her a child, imagine if he BROKE HER HEART!!!
Harlenglishes 4ever. I would do anything for more content of them together. 😭
