While it's on my mind, I think the reason why Millennium Actress is my favorite Kon movie is because the film itself is a love letter to fanship.

Take Perfect Blue, where fanship is depicted as either a distorting, malignant obsession, or merely the starting state before society's eventual cruel indifference. Memania is deadly, and Mimarin's fans almost equally so; at least in the callous way they speak of her "death" as an idol. Paprika briefly touches on fanship, representing the titular character as the "woman of your dreams", but the subject takes a backseat.

However, when Kyoji and especially Genya are immersed into the world of Chiyoko Fujiwara's works in Millennium Actress, fanship is met with perhaps one of the best outcomes possible - complete appreciation and reciprocation. One of my favorite cuts is where Chiyoko and Genya are visually snapped back to reality, but the two of them are still passionately renacting a scene. Genya's elation (and his tears), is contagious to the viewer; such is the power of loving a piece of media. Genya and Chiyoko go on a thrilling adventure through the world of cinema, and it's through the sheer joy and passion of this journey that Chiyoko and the audience understand that yes; what you "really love is the chase".

To watch, to adore, to feel - that is fanship. And that is what I really love about Millennium Actress.

My Thoughts on Perfect Blue

This watch was definitely stressful. I enjoyed the fantasy psycho-thriller vibe to it, and it reminded me a little bit of American Psycho, but I did not care for some of the graphic scenes, even if they were fake or imagined. The film follows a pop-idol turned actress and her subsequent identity crisis as she deals with the pressures and serious dangers that come with fame. The film addresses issues of mental health and positive self image, as well as the decrepitness that can come from obsessive fan culture. The film questions the perceived realities that individuals can create from their subconscious, and the importance of being comfortable in one's own skin. 

A great deal of the conflict that arises within the film comes from Mima, the main character, and her struggle to accept herself and come to grips with reality. After leaving a career as a pop idol to pursue the risque lifestyle of an actress, Mima undergoes a psychosis that morphs into dissociative identity disorder, where reality and her subconscious combine to torment her. Mima is visibly emotionally and physically shaken from the pressure to perform well, and is consistently put into situations that dehumanize her and take advantage of her femininity. Mima represents the harsh lifestyle of celebrities who are pressured into doing things that they would not otherwise do under the guise that they must in order to succeed in their profession. On top of this, she is further influenced by a disturbing online presence that plays into her doubts about the life she lives. Mima eventually overcomes this nightmare by confronting her tormentor, and coming to the self realization that she is who she is. The film demonstrates that the power of having a strong sense of identity holds more value than the opinions of others. 

The film also highlights the startling extremes to which fan culture can go to achieve its means. Mr MeMania acts as one of the antagonists who stalks Mima’s every single move, and records it in an online forum. He uses his platform to speak for Mima, and spreads misinformation about how she feels toward her career. MeMania acts as an extreme example of an Otaku who has not separated fiction from reality, and is now attempting to bring his fantasies into fruition. Rumi, who was once Mima’s trusted friend and now turned psychotic killer, provides a glimpse of an insane case of identity crisis, as she tries to live through Mima’s career. She becomes so caught up in her life, that when things do not go the way she wants, she adopts Mima’s identity so that she can set things right in her own mind. Mr MeMania and Rumi provide two examples of individuals who have lost sight of reality due to their obsession.

O “Male Gaze” em Perfect Blue e Millennium Actress

Satoshi Kon é um diretor conhecido por ter um estilo próprio, que é facilmente reconhecido por características como a utilização de Jump Cuts, criar “filmes dentro de filmes” e abordar os limites entre a realidade e a ilusão. Porém existe outra característica pouco comentada que merece ser destacada, a forma como o diretor que representa o Male Gaze.

Para aqueles que não conhecem esse termo, o Male Gaze é a representação da mulher dentro de uma obra de arte como um ser (ou objeto) a ser desejado pelo espectador masculino. Para tanto, cria-se ao mesmo tempo uma personagem fisicamente atraente e que possa ser desejada. Geralmente é alguém que utiliza o seu corpo como meio de sedução dentro da obra, algo que permita o espectador desejá-la “sem culpa”.

Em Perfect Blue nós podemos observar como o Male Gaze é retratado no roteiro influenciando a carreira e a vida da Mima. Em um primeiro momento, durante o seu período como cantora, ela era idealizada como uma garota pura, alguém que sempre estaria disposta a fazer tudo pelos seus fãs. Enquanto que durante a sua carreira de atriz, ela passa a ser representada como uma mulher adulta, alguém que utiliza o seu corpo como uma ferramenta de sexualização ou sedução dentro dos seus trabalhos, seja fazendo uma cena de estupro ou posando nua.

Toda essa transformação acaba sendo mediada por homens (o diretor da série de TV, o fotógrafo e até o seu próprio agente) que impuseram as suas visões sobre a carreira da Mima e acabaram por influenciar a forma como os seus antigos fãs a observavam. Sendo assim, o filme apresenta não só uma confusão interna em como a Mima se vê, mas também uma confusão em como os homens a observam. Prova da importância disso na trama é que tanto o diretor da série, quanto o fotógrafo, o seu agente e o fã Memania tiveram os seus olhos vazados quando foram mortos.

Esse é um exemplo perfeito de como o Male Gaze é prejudicial para a representação feminina dentro de obras de arte e para as próprias atrizes que as interpretam. Porém também pode haver um olhar positivo dos homens sobre as mulheres, algo que foi mostrado justamente no filme seguinte de Satoshi Kon.

Millennium Actress mostra o diretor Genya Tachibana fazendo uma entrevista com a atriz Chiyoko Fujiwara, na qual os relatos dela mostram como a sua vida se confunde com os seus papéis interpretados e a busca por um amor. Na maior parte do filme o diretor age passivamente escutando as histórias da Chiyoko. Porém durante dois momentos a forma como o telespectador observa a Chiyoko é mediada através do olhar do diretor.

Logo no início do filme o diálogo expositivo que apresenta o documentário é feito pelo Genya, nele podemos observar uma grande admiração do diretor pela atriz. Ele afirma o quanto ela foi importante para a história do estúdio no qual ela trabalhou e para a indústria cinematográfica japonesa no geral. Já da metade para o final do filme o próprio Genya vira um personagem ativo no desenrolar da história da vida de Chiyoko, já que ele trabalhou como assistente de vários filmes em que ela participou e teve a oportunidade de observar várias coisas que aconteceram ao redor da atriz, que antes não faziam parte do seu conhecimento. Esses relatos do diretor acabam por trazer uma profundidade sobre as coisas que aconteceram na vida da sua entrevistada e ressaltam mais uma vez o seu profissionalismo.

Juntando estas duas participações mais ativas dele, podemos dizer que a maneira como os espectadores irão ver a vida da atriz será mediada pela forma como o Genya irá dirigir o documentário. Só que em vez de projetar uma mulher para ser somente desejada, o que o diretor realmente quer é apresentar uma grande atriz e a forma como a sua carreira foi importante.

Esses dois exemplos nos primeiros filmes do Satoshi Kon, de homens representando mulheres nas suas obras, serve não só como alerta, mas também uma resposta sobre como podemos desenvolver e ver personagens femininas em filmes, séries, animes e tudo mais.

A girl was killed in a head-on collision between two speedboats on the Meghna River in Hizla upazila of Barishal last night.
