A brief summary of Asteria - Recollections of Eden (Part Four)
So it’s been a couple of years since I did any translation work on this but with the news of Tales of Asteria shutting down I wanted to finally finish my summary of Recollections of Eden (aka the White Lions) arc.
You can start from Part One here
Let’s finish this! The final summary;
With all three barriers surrounding Shangrace now disabled the core group head into the city and fight to the top of the tower to reach Van and Lazaris.
As they climb the tower and break further barriers they can hear Lazaris’ voice.
The dragon monster from the shrine priestess trials appears and though they manage to injure one dragon, another shows up and blocks the path;
In their final appearance the White Lions show up to take over the fight which allows the others to move on and confront Van and Lazaris. Farewell to these amazing outfits!
Letting the White Lions do their thing the group continues on. At the top of the tower is a ball of light and Mikleo realises its’ the same as the one he saw in the ruins which helped him regain his memories of their original world.
Lazaris arrives and says that with the disappearance of that last ball of light this new world is complete.
Lazaris then attacks them but Colette still struggles to understand why they must fight and why she can feel Lazaris is hurting still. (As a side note anyone who has their original memory is referred to as a ‘sinner’ in this story. I didn’t know that when I was translating previously)
We finally get some backstory on Lazaris. Describing events in a previous Asteria arc (or possibly alluding to Radiant Mythology 3) Lazaris tells how the appearance of Kanonno (the descender) started everything.
How they came into existence at that time and how since then they’ve became exhausted watching how humans fought and killed each other, living creatures and even the world itself.
We briefly fight Lazaris and it looks like the group will be overwhelmed when Colette awakens again to her power and uses it to stop everyone from becoming crystals.
But she doesn’t want to hurt Lazaris, Colette has finally worked out that Lazaris was born as a collection of human consciousness and is not their enemy.
She wants to work with Lazaris to return the world to its former state and make a better future. Lazaris repeatedly denies Colette’s help and that’s when the big cheese himself appears and to everyone’s surprise Van attacks Lazaris.
The group cannot believe Van is now trying to kill Lazaris but we get a little more backstory on why the two were working together in the first place.
Still in Van’s eyes Lazaris’ role is now over and he wants to destroy them to finally complete this new ‘perfect’ world.
The group step in to defend Lazaris and Van tries to reason and bring them round to his way of thinking.
Sorey and the others take responsibility as humans for how their world became and promise if things return to normal that they’ll make the world right again.
None of them want to live in this new fake perfect world and leave their old ones behind because Van’s ultimate wish is to destroy everything and start again.
As they prepare to fight Van, Colette once again offers Lazaris her protection and assurance that they will make the world a better place.
We push Van back once but he comes back stronger than ever.
However Lazaris will not be taken down and musters enough strength to fight back.
I had a very difficult boss fight with Van to get to this point and it didn’t seem like we would be able to defeat him when Lazaris finally steps in.
Lazaris crystallise both themself and Van, Colette and the rest of the group’s words seem to have finally won them over.
The world starts to return to normal, all the traces of crystals disappear.
A few of the group we haven’t seen for awhile show up and tell us the world outside is returning to normal.
They are sad hearing what happened but Colette knows Lazaris is still with them and watching over to make sure they keep their promise to make a better world.
Raven asks Ludger and the others if they saw the White Lions on their way up but Ludger tells them no. It seems they have already disappeared from this world along with the crystals.
One by one they are engulfed by a bright light and start to disappear. Everyone is worried they won’t remember these events later on and all say their goodbyes now.
Still, despite everything they are finally returning home.
Epilogue!!
Back in the regular world the various groups discuss what happened. It seems like only a select few people remember what happened.
Raven explains it here but people who remembered the original world are the ones who now retain their memories of Lazaris and Van’s world.
I didn’t see this in my reading earlier but there were some stone mouments which also appeared with Lazaris’ world. I asked @sekaiki-honey about this as well as why Colette had ‘the will of the world’ inside her and they said;
Colette, Lloyd, Zelos vow to keep their promise to Lazaris and make a better world.
The end!
Thanks to everyone who read this far. I know I summarised it heavily and probably missed a lot of stuff but there’s still a couple of months til the game shuts down and I encourage you to read it yourself if you want info on a particular character’s journey or more backstory.
I am also sorry for the poor quality of the photos and translations as well as how long this took to finish but I don’t speak Japanese or have much free time so this is the best I could do. I wanted to record the story somewhere for people who were as curious as me before the game shut down and I’m happy I could finally do that.

White Lion guitarist Vito Bratta was among the leading quitarists of the 1980s. He had the speed, style, and look of the prototypical '80s guitar god. But the critics said he was merely an Eddie Van Halen imitation. In a brand-new interview with Guitar World, Bratta says he was eventually able to find out firsthand what Eddie himself thought. His response brought Bratta to tears.
Here's an excerpt of Bratta's interview with Guitar Worlds Jackson Maxwell (with contributions from Andrew Daly).
“One of the names that came up in the discussion was Eddie Van Halen, to whom Bratta was often in less than favorable terms compared in his early days. As annoying as they were to the White Lion guitarist at the time, however, those comparisons did end up making the one in-person meeting he had with Van Halen a rather cathartic one.
Van Halen, Bratta tells GW, was indeed a significant influence on his development as a guitarist in his words, "the image of what thought of when thought about being a guitar player in a rock band."
"The thing that struck me most about Eddie Van Halen when he came out was that here was literally everything that had been chasing wrapped up in one guy," Bratta explains.
"He had the melody, the tone, the picking, the rapid-fire stuff, and he had the look of being a guitar player. He was the image of what I thought of when thought about being a guitar player in a rock band. And it was all wrapped up in one person. It was unfathomable to me then, and it still is today."
His admiration of Van Halen aside, though, Bratta was, understandably, less than thrilled when accusations of stealing Van Halen's style were lobbed in his direction upon White Lion's commercial breakthrough in the mid-1980s.
"Once became established with White Lion in the '80s, I got a lot of shit from people who said was aping his style," Bratta says. "That was all bullshit. It got to the point where I met Eddie once, and asked him, 'Does it freak you out that play like you?' I thought that because it had been drilled into my head by magazines and stuff."
Van Halen, Bratta tells GW, was dismissive of the notion that the latter player was merely an EVH clone.
"Now, I'm not the type to use Eddie's name for whatever especially since he passed away but will say that Eddie complimented me, and that he didn't agree," Bratta shares.
"What will say is that when I talked to Eddie, he didn't agree. I got to meet him once when he came into the studio during the recording of [White Lion's 1991 album] Mane Attraction. He came in, and he was sitting on my 5150 amp. I was blown away. Here I am, standing in the studio, watching Eddie Van Halen sitting on my amp, jamming out on guitar.
"Eddie said a lot of nice things to me that day," Bratta went on, "and I'll take them to my grave, but I'll tell you this, I was touched enough to where l had to leave the room, go to the bathroom, and cry. That might make me sound like a dick, but after being told I sounded like him, that I was copying him, and all this shit, it meant a lot to hear that he liked what I did, and that he respected it."”

Leaving the kids with Uncle Bob and Uncle chicken whilst opposites attract!Jake and Y/N go out of town. Like im talking about:
Uncle chicken giving the kids a bit too much freedom then immediately regretting it
Uncle bob thinking he can totally wrangle the kids and WRONG he’s OUTNUMBERED
Possible scenario involving a skunk and CASES of tomato juice cans
Maybe they take the kids to a lil kids center
Maybe one kid gets uncle chicken to chase them through the play set and uncle chicken gets stuck in the slide ( bob has to push his ass through)
Maybe they accidentally put the kids in a slightly dangerous situation (sitcom level dangerous) and they bribe the kids with ice cream to not tell their parents
parents come home and uncle bob and uncle chicken are epitome of chill

See, when it was just Alex and Ella, Uncle Rooster had everything under control. Alex was easily entertained with hours of Smithsonian TV, and Ella was just months old watching her godfather with big green eyes. Now when Ella got older, Uncle Rooster realized he might have his hands full. There was once where he turned around for a couple seconds to tie Alex's shoe, and Ella was gone (she saw a dog and wanted to pet it), so after that he brought in Uncle Bob.
Uncle Bob had things a little bit more under control when it came to just the two Seresin kids. . . and then Eli came along. Bob and Rooster thought Eli was going to be easy, be just like his older brother. . . but man, were they ALL wrong. Eli was proving to the world very quickly he was the youngest Seresin (I mean, he showed everyone he was running things when he decided to come a week late. . . and while Y/N was at home). Bob and Rooster's biggest fight with Eli was trying to keep his clothes on.
Bob and Rooster had contemplated leashes for the Seresin kids when they go out. Alex tended to stay by their side, he was so much like his mother, he didn't want to stray away from comfort from them. Ella was adventurous and would take off. . . Eli would try and take his clothes off. Eli also liked to cause a ruckus by throwing fits. There were times were Rooster would get glares for the crying child in his arms cause Eli would throw himself on the ground.
They thankful that Phoenix was named Jasper and Maxwell's godmother, cause that means she was ALSO added to the baby sitting roster. Except she never seemed to have as many issues as Bob and Rooster do.
"How do you do it?" Rooster asked, staring wide eyed at the five sleeping Seresin kids on the couch, "Did you drug them?"
"No!" Phoenix whisper-yelled and hit his chest, "The key is no sugar after 4PM, and make them run around in the backyard for hours. Jasper was falling asleep in his highchair." She smirked, and walked back over to the couch. The boys stared at her wide-eyed like she was about to wake a sleeping lion.
"What are you doing!?" Bob whispered as he watched her pick up Ella, who wrapped her small arms and legs around her aunt's body.
"Putting them to bed," Phoenix said, "They're sleeping, pick them up gently and put them in bed. I will put the twins down." Phoenix watched over her shoulder as Rooster tiptoed over to the chair were Eli was sleeping, and gently poked his cheek before reaching down to pick him up.

"And that's how you come back from a suspension! Two goals and two assists for June Maxwell!" Andrew said.
"And look at that smile on her face! She has definitely missed it” Jacob added.
"That's the face of someone who loves football" Ben said, trying very hard not to smile. She was back. The June Maxwell they all enjoyed watching, was back. "Though they should give her the fifth goal and make it a hat-trick."
"It was an own goal, Chilly."
"I know, but…"
"I barely recognise you, Chilwell. You are saying nice things about Maxwell. Again!" Andrew laughed. "Anything you would like to share with us?"
"It's just that after seeing what happened in her last game, I realized we should spread more positivity instead of negativity. I still think she is overrated and has a lot of work to do to be as good as you all say she is…"
"That's more you" Jacob chuckled.
"But there has been so much hate everywhere and especially online, that I felt I was adding fuel to the fire and that wasn't sitting well with me. Football players have to deal with a lot of pressure already, and sometimes we forget that they are human beings with real feelings just like anyone else."
"They all are, Chilly. They all are. Well said.”
"So yeah… I may start to go a bit softer on her. But just a teeny-tiny bit" he laughed.

"That was the last interview, June. You can go shower."
"Thank you" she smiled, starting to walk towards the changing room.
"Maxwell! Wait!"
"Chilwell?" she said, turning aroud. "What are you doing down here?"
"I wanted to speak with you."
"Again?" she asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Yes, again. I wanted to congratulate you for today's game, you played really well."
"April's Fools was last week, Chilwell."
"I'm not joking, June. I'm being honest."
"Sure" she chuckled.
"I am. I even got you something."
"Something like what? A present?"
"Kind of."
"Oh my God, another Kinder egg?" she laughed. "Is this your new way of bullying me? Giving me treats to make me feel as if I was a dog? Wait, is this your revenge because I called you dog?"
"It's just a nice gesture, June."
"You and being nice with me don't go together."
"They may start to" he shrugged. "Are you taking it or not?"
"Is it poisoned?"
"June…" Ben said, rolling his eyes.
"Ok, ok… I'm taking it. Thank you."
"You're welcome" he smiled.
"Wait, no. I know what your new plan is. You want to send my fitness to hell by feeding me chocolate."
"Dear God, Maxwell" he sighed.
"I was just teasing you, Chilwell" she laughed. "Thank you. For this and for what you said on tv. Someone from the team told me."
"You're welcome. And I meant it. I'm not going to stop stating my facts…" he smirked. "But I won't be as mean or ruthless. I promise."
"Ok, good. I... I should probably go shower, I don't want to get cold and risk getting sick now that I'm back."
"You also happen to stink."
"What?"
"Just stating a fact" Ben shrugged, trying very hard to hide a smile.
"You… whatever. See you around, Chilwell. And thank you for the present."
"You're welcome, Maxwell. Again. See you around."

"What is that?"
"Uh?"
"That toy" Lauren said, pointing at the little lion June was playing with.
"Oh, it's from a Kinder egg."
"You have Kinder eggs? Where? I want one!"
"I don't have any. Someone gave me this one."
"Someone? Who?"
"A fan. They wanted to cheer me up."
"Well, they've been very successful at it, because you haven't stopped smiling since we got into the bus."
"What?" June chuckled.
"You've been smiling like an idiot."
"Yeah, sure."
"You have. Was he cute?" Lauren asked.
"Who?"
"The fan who gave you the Kinder egg. Because you have the smile of someone who is thinking about her crush" she smirked.
"It was a kid, Lauren" June said, feeling her cheeks get warm.
"Did the kid come with a dad? Brother? Uncle?"
"It was just a kid, ok?"
"Ok, ok. No need to get mad. But I thought we were friends."
"And we are."
"Friends tell each other when they fancy someone."
"I don't fancy anyone" June chuckled.
"You… ok, fine" Lauren sighed. "You don't fancy anyone."
"I don't."
"And I said ok. Will you wake me up when we are getting close home? I want to take a nap."
"I will, don't worry."
"Thank you. Night night, June."
"Night night, Lauren" she smiled.
"Friends tell each other when they fancy someone."
"I don't fancy anyone."
Because she didn't fancy anyone, did she? And especially not Ben Chilwell.
Yes, him showing up today and giving her the chocolate egg had made her feel all fuzzy inside. It had been a very cute gesture, but it was just because it brought really good memories from her childhood, of her dad always buying her one after her Sunday games.
And the other day when he had told her that he cared about her, her heart had skipped a beat, yes. But just because it had caught her by surprise.
Though while she had been suspended and bored as hell, she had kept thinking about Ben telling her he would never date her, his words coming back and making her feel… weird. Kind of disappointed.
And then, of course, was the fact that her mind would randomly go back to their make out session on New Year's. To when she had kissed him. Twice. Thoroughly enjoying it.
And then…
"Fuck."
"What?" Lauren asked, already half asleep while her head rested on June's shoulder.
"Nothing, nothing. Go back to sleep."
But it was definitely something, because June had just realized that she did fancy someone. She fancied Ben freaking Chilwell.

The Fearsome Four
Alright so it seems that more than one person wants a list so here we go with the first four trainees. (I will be splitting this up because like some people aptly remarked there are Too Many Trainees and writing them all down in one post is going to make for an infinitely long post. (Cries in, these were supposed to be one of characters that were just supposed to make the institute feel more lived-in. Not menaces that take over half of the story)
Maxwell Joseph Lightwood (He/Him, 9 years and a half - Not an OC though I HC him looking differently than in the series in my head)
Nicknames: Max, Maxie, Little Clover, Cricket, Little Caramel, Menace, Little Terror
Physical description: looks like a mini Alec – black hair, hazels eyes and mischief in his blood. He’s smaller than the other trainees his age, standing somewhere between 3ft 11 and 4ft (120,2 cm) Has three long gashes on his torso that span most of his chest as well as two smaller but just as thick scars on his right upper thigh, a thick scar on his left ankle and one on the inside of his right arm. (This only applies for AWG Max. Golden Words Alec is 4ft 3 (130,5 centimeters) and has no such scars.)
Personality: He’s the Menace Supreme what more do you want me to say? Culprit number 1 of the Mumbai Incident.
Extra info: co- owner of Bubbles and has a batman backpack with cartoon characters and sharks on it
2. Arjun Jaskaran Bhasin (He/Him, 9 years old)
Nicknames: Arji, Jun-Jun, Marshmallow, Chotu (nickname only his older siblings call him)
Physical description: thick dark-brown hair that’s mostly straight, dark brown nearly black eyes. He’s about 4ft2 (128,5 centimeters) and the only one of the fearsome four that doesn’t look like a mess most of the time.
Personality and tidbits: He’s quieter than his three best friends, but no less of a menace for it. He’s the youngest in his family and is close with his parents/older siblings despite not living in the same institute. He loves everything dragons and, even though he misses his family a lot, he also loves being at the NYI. Now if only Alec could get the rest of his family to work there as well…Culprit Number 2 of the Mumbai Incident.
Extra info: has a dragon backpack, yes the dragon can breathe fire.
3. Barika Fahari (He/Him, almost 10)
Nickname: Barii, Riri, Gumdrop
Physical description: short, black curly hair. Light brown eyes. 4ft 5 (134 cm) which makes him the tallest of the foursome fear.
Personality and tidbits: Barika was originally supposed to be a female character because I didn’t want Max to only have male best friends, but then Barika decided he was trans without any care as to what I had planned (hence the female name which he decided he was keeping). Like Max, he’s a menace and adores comics. His absolute BFF is Leo and those two will probably end up as parabatai in the future. Culprit number 3 of the Mumbai Incident.
Extra info: Has a The Flash backpack with a little Green Lantern keychain and ever-changing cartoon/Manga-characters on the sides. Robin, Batman and Cyborg logos are embroidered on the straps.
4. Leonard Benjamin Knightvale (He/him, two days older than Max and will never let him live it down)
Nickname: Leo, Lenny, corn chip, little lion
Physical description: light brown hair that tends to get in his eyes, green-brown eyes and 4ft3 (130 centimeters – yes, Golden Words Max teases him back for being older but shorter)
Personality and tidbits: If someone enabled Max to do one of his stunts, Leo is the most likely culprit. If nobody enabled Max to do one of his stunts than Leo was likely in a coma because he WILL enable Max’s shenanigans just to see the chaos happen. BFF’s with Barika and thinks Alec is the coolest person ever. He lacks any kind of impulse control and is currently in the lead in the “Get Ragnor to turn them into a frog” competition much to Max’s displeasure. He hates being called Leonard about as much as Max hates being called Maxwell. Culprit number 4 of the Mumbai Incident.
Extra info: Green Lantern backpack with a The Flash keychain, a Batman keychain as well as a Cyborg and Robin sticker. The Green Lantern logo in the middle lights up and can turn into different colors if Leo wants to.

Trick or Treat
Summary: Eric and Fiona were dead set on dressing up the cats.
A/N: "I'm not gonna write another bonus, I'm not gonna write another bonus, I'm not gonna - Fuck it" I had to write this bc I got the idea in my brain during a stream and it wouldn't let go until I wrote it

Gertrude blamed Eric Delano for the situation she was in. Well, Eric and Fiona Law. She could hear the two talk on the 30th that Gertrude felt was not work related. Her suspicion was confirmed as Eric knocked on the door to her office, leaning against the doorframe as he waited for her to look up.
“Yes Eric?”
“So… Are you doing anything tomorrow?”
“Why are you asking?”
“Because it’s Halloween. Going out for drinks with, oh, what was his name? Jurgen Lighter?”
“Leitner.” Gertrude sighed. “And no. I’m going to be home. Halloween is just a time of year to give children excuses to eat a lot of candy.”
“Riiight-” Eric drummed his fingers against the door frame. “You got cats though, right?”
“Yes.”
“Are you going to dress them up?”
“Now why would I do that?”
Because Eric and Fiona were dead set on dressing up the cats. So after work they forced Gertrude to the local pet shop in order to find enough costumes for the cats. It was quite hard figuring everything out. Spending hours there looking at photos of the cats to find the right match.
“We’ll go home to yours directly after work then?” Fiona clarified with Gertrude before they went their separate ways. Gertrude only answered with a nod and mumble about how tomorrow would not be a great day.
31st started just fine. The day went on as usual, though her assistants were more talkative than normal. Eventually it was time to leave and the four stood ready as Gertrude exited her office. She sighed. Clearly no one had forgotten.
Some of the cats were very easy to get into their costumes. Oliver, Maxwell and Manuela got dressed as bats with wings, matching their already black fur. Oliver let it happen while the other two put on a bit more of a fight. Eric had a bit worse of a luck than Emma as he decided on the twins, both wearing a very colourful snake costume that Michael had first fought to not have to wear, Gerry however had been more peaceful, glaring at Eric as he got a onesie full of different types of eyes on it.
Poor Sarah had decided to take on Mike, which had gone as well as one might expect from him as Sarah tried to get him into a cloud costume. She had then taken three of the more peaceful cats. Simon, dressed as a bee and Peter who had accepted his fate to be dressed as a jester. She had even managed to catch Elias to put him in an owl costume.
Gertrude decided to make it as easy as possible by taking the cats that seemed the most interested in the costumes. Tim dressed in a cape similar to how a vampire costume would be, Martin who got a cow costume, Sasha who got a small knitted sweater and quickly made glasses to fit a cat, Jon who joined - or was bullied by Tim - was put in a moth costume. Agnes came up to her for her costume, looking like a fire with a crown on top of her head.
Fiona got Daisy into a dog costume, Melanie got on a lion's mane and Basira who got put in a box painted like a police car, though not without some chasing, scratching and something that fell from a table.
Emma stuck to the theme of the matching outfits as she managed to get Jane into a worm costume, John into a fly costume and Annabelle into a spider costume.
Eric changed out Georgie’s collar to one that said ‘The Admiral’. Jared got a onesie similar to Gerry’s though this one had a pattern of bones.
Fiona had to take Jude and Nikola. Jude dressed up as a flame while Nikola looked like a toy soldier.
After a bunch of photos and attempts at getting Gertrude out with them, Emma, Fiona, Sarah and Eric decided to leave. Planning to go to some bar they liked. Leaving Gertrude alone with cats in stupid costumes and having to answer the door as people dressed up came by. Which was a bit of a pain as cats wanted to get out or the people showing up saw the dressed up cats. Gertrude was not very happy to get the cats OUT of the costumes again.

do you make your bed? yep, i find that tidiness helps my adhd
what's your favourite number? 3 and 5
what is your job? graphic design is my passion (but the very boring graphic/layout design where you don't have creative freedom but corporate designs)
if you could go back to school would you? hm, i did have a good time tbh but i do not want to go through puberty again.
can you parallel park? yes, i love doing it
a job you had that would surprise people? worked at a small tv production company and once assisted a shoot that included d-list celebs (famous in my country at least and also only famous to a certain generation)
do you think aliens are real? who knows what's out there!
can you drive a manual car? hell yeah, here we still mostly have stick shift, and even if automatic is getting more and more popular, you still learn stick first. i think it's more fun tbh
what's your guilty pleasure? daily soaps
tattoos? a lot of them, yeah (1 piercing)

favourite type of music? it so depends on my mood... but i can always go for 80s. i also love surf rock (i saw messer chups live once!)

any phobias? hmm i have a lot of anxieties and dislikes but phobias? i don't think so tbh.
favourite childhood sport? equestrian riding - still is :) i also tried soccer, karate (my dad used to do it), badminton and basketball (my brother used to do it)

what movie(s) do you adore? I think I adore good movies? haha. genre is secondary. i love camp movies (the birdcage), i love movies that are character driven, you know - things are happening but it's not a 3 act structure (think: my own private idaho, all of us strangers, weekend), i LOVE a good action movie (I honestly think the John Wick movies are the sexiest things i have ever seen). I love a good mafia movie (goodfellas, duh). I love an old school buddy comedy with gay undertones (midnight run) or classic action movies with gay undertones (Heat), and yes i also love a good superhero movie (winter soldier). and yes, i also love a good romcom (basically any romcom hugh grant has done. almost all of them have aged pretty good). i love good trash (psycho goreman), i love sad movies (banshees of inisherin), i love old disney movies (lion king)....
coffee or tea? total coffee girl but i do drink a lot of tea for hydration. roiboos, masala chai, peppermint... anything that isn't fruity

On April 14th 1578 James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell , Earl of Orkney and third husband of Mary Queen of Scots died, aged 44, tied to a post in a dungeon at, Denmark.
As I posted on Friday Bothwell fled Scotland after the surrender at Carberry Hill, Queen Mary’s last act of love for him was guaranteeing he could leave the area unharmed.
Bothwell took ship from Aberdeen to Shetland, he may have stopped off in Orkney, the only thing we know is he was denied refuge there and travelled on to Shetland.
He was pursued by Sir William Kirkcaldy of Grange and William Murray of Tullibardine who it seems were not that far behind him. They sailed into Bressay Sound near Lerwick. Four of Bothwell’s ships in the Sound set sail north to Unst where Hepburn and his cousin, the pirate, Olaf Sinclair were negotiating with German captains to hire more ships. Kirkcaldy’s flagship The Lion, chased one of Bothwell’s ships, and both ships were damaged on a submerged rock.
Bothwell sent his treasure ship to Scalloway and fought a three-hour-long sea battle off the Port of Unst where the mast of one of his ships was shot away. During the chase a storm erupted and Bothwell’s superior seamanship to come to his rescue. After transferring his men to his two remaining ships, he sailed south-east before the wind, making the 250-mile crossing in record time Although Kirkcaldy followed for sixty miles, he was out-sailed and, by his own admission, was ‘no good seaman’.
He might have thought he was off the hook again, but no, Frederick II was not sympathetic to his cause, he was at war, and was torn between his blood ties to Mary Queen of Scots and the need to show loyalty to his Protestant allies. Fortunately for him, the problem solved itself when Mary, held prisoner in England, dissolved her marriage to Bothwell, making him merely a problem to be got rid of from Frederik’s perspective, so he ordered his arrest to be used as a bargaining chip in the forlorn hope that he would be traded in return for the return of the Northern Isle!
After being brought before the Bergen magistrates, in September he was carried to Copenhagen on one of Frederick’s ships for ‘honourable confinement’ at Dragshorn Castle, the Scandinavian equivalent of the Tower Of London. I found an extract from My Heart is My Own, a biography on Mary Queen of Scots that reads
“On 14th April 1578, Bothwell died at Dragsholm. As was customary for state prisoners, his body was carried to the promontory that juts into the fjord a side of things. mile or so from the castle and buried at the parish church of Fårevejle. (…) “
There are differing versions on how he lived out his last days, one says he was actually not held in ‘honourable confinement’, but in a small dungeon chained to a post, the cell so small he was unable to stand, the second is more in the line of the ‘honourable confinement’ that he spent the last years drinking to excess with others held at the castle and gradually became more and more insane.
John Maxwell, visited Dragshorn Castle, and reported that Hepburn had latterly become overgrown with hair and filth. I take it from this he was still alive at the time!
The story doesn’t quite end there, Bothwell’s coffin was opened for the first time in 1868 and a very well-preserved body was found, which subsequently rapidly decayed and, for a period of time, until 1973, was open to public viewing under a glass lid. Then, in response to a request from the descendants of the Hepburn family, the newly-crowned Margrethe II had Bothwell buried in a zinc-lined coffin within a sarcophagus of oak, and here he remains.
Every now and then there is a story in the press about his descendents making an attempt for his body to be repatriated, I have no idea why the Danes would not allow this and for the moment he remains there. Of course with a story like this the castle is said to be haunted by the "good” Earl, where is he said to ride through the courtyard with a full horse and carriage.
The pictures are, the supposed head of Bothwell “ Study of Mummified Head” by Danish artist Otto Bache. The even more gruesome “body of James Hepburn” although the church where his supposed remains lie was known to have exhibited several bodies over the years as his, therefore, it is impossible to know if this is actually him.
There have been moves by his descendants to have his body repatriated through the years Speaking in 2010 Sir Alastair Buchan-Hepburn, Bothwell's direct descendant sought to raise funds to lobby the Scottish and Danish governments, saying "I want the Scottish culture minister to get in touch with his Danish counterpart to ask him 'would you please consider to return the body of James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell?'"
