Minimalism; The death of detail and creativity

Minimalist fashion is a recurring trend, popular as far back as the 1920’s with Coco Chanel, and still popular to today. Minimalism, simply is the more tidy and plain alternative to maximalism. Where as maximalist fashion would be full of colour, patterns, and accessorising. Minimalist fashion has neutral colours, basic shapes, and a less is more look. Most the time though minimalism comes across as uninspired. So in a culture of micro trends, hundreds of aesthetics, and style advice easily accessible on the internet, it’s surprising to see that ‘clean girl aesthetic’ and minimalism are still what people are drawn to.

It isn’t hard to realise why minimalism would be so popular. The style needs only a few staple pieces, basic tops and trousers easy to turn into a full outfit. The simplicity in minimalism isn’t just in the style but in the outfit planning and dressing itself. To not have to think when getting dressed. It is easy to be a minimalist, and ease is what people have always craved. There is no need for stress or unnecessary time looking out what to wear. But in choosing the easy option people are loosing their self expression. Even just the implementation of colour makes such a difference from the dull neutral palette that’s a constant in minimalism, it shows personality.

It’s no lie that minimalism is usually more sustainable and affordable. Though that doesn’t take away from fashion being an art form, a means of self expression, which is missing from minimalism. With all trends it will come and go, and soon enough maximalism will be what is in. Someone just like myself will complain about the unnecessary layers and conflicting patterns, but until then I will continue to dislike this boring style.
