I did end up waking up super early (on accident) and watching this episode but I decided not to post my review until after it had been on TV. I've really got to start getting into writing my essays now cause I have less than two weeks even with the deadline extension but I can manage to spend 12 straight hours thinking about writing it (rotating Casualty in my microwave brain) and not even realise I've done it until my mum's alarm goes off.
Well, it was an episode, wasn't it? Sometimes Casualty gives us masterpieces of television (cough Switzerland) and sometimes Casualty gives us "what the fuck was that?" (cough Too Much, Too Young - that was a very mixed Saturday) and Tinderbox was, at least for me, pretty much in the middle. I guess I wasn't as invested as I could've been cause there wasn’t much of my faves, I'd probably be more positive if we had more of them.
Pretty busy and all over the place episode but that’s to be expected at the start of a miniseries, I guess.
Stevie my beloved, she was great in this one. Elinor Lawless is very talented!! This has got me looking forward to her own storyline even more.
I know Ryan was unpopular but I loved him as a problematic little bitch character. Shows like this sometimes need a Ryan to cause problems for everyone and he served his purpose. Like, he is terrible but it was amusing to have a terrible member of the predominantly very sweet baby nurse quartet. I’ll miss him, honestly. I don’t imagine he’ll come back since there’s a new new (I still think of the baby nurses as new) nurse joining next week.
I made this last night, he didn’t actually die but I still think it’s funny:
I really liked that final shot of Jodie, Rida and Cam together but, to quote my mum as it happened, “I feel like all three of them have wanted Ryan to get beaten up at least once before”.
I love a good family storyline, especially when the family has multiple members in the main cast cause I think it allows for more development of the relationship (gestures wildly at Jan and Teddy), and Max and Jodie were great today. Loved all their interactions. Especially loved their conversation about Max’s kidney failure and especially “I wouldn’t allow it, even if you wanted to.” “Which I don’t.” “Well at least we agree on one thing” and “I’m sorry I’m not what you expected” (!!!!!!!!!!). I think they’re more similar than either of them realises, and I love that kind of dynamic - in both my ‘main fandoms’ my favourite characters are girls whose relationships with their fathers could be described as “I’m nothing like my dad (I’m just acting exactly like him)”. There’s definitely examples of that in this episode but back in Driving Force I remember a scene where Dylan tells them that neither of them should be treating Max’s mum and they both stand there looking at him with the same expression.
I expected that knowing the Teddy infidelity arc will happen would affect how I watch the show and when Paige and Jodie were treating the same patient I was 👁️👁️ the whole time. Whatever, I’ll get over it (hhhhhhh).
Sah was in this but so barely that the credits didn’t actually include Arin, which is weird to me.
I will say I think Casualty has been on weird pacing recently. I’d blame the miniseries format but it feels like there has been some storylines that are too long-running without saying anything new (FAITH) and other ones that get dropped too quickly without enough time to actually go into the ideas they implied were happening.
I think it was a good start to the new series but I would’ve liked them to cut the Faith stuff and have something actually happening with the paramedics instead.
Yes, I know complaining about Faith is beating a dead horse. However, in continuing to write her and this storyline, the writers have invented a dead horse beating machine to keep beating the dead horse perpetually. It goes on endlessly and has absolutely nothing new to say. And while some storylines have been getting these rushed and incomplete conclusions, Casualty had an opportunity to give the Faith storyline a conclusion with her going to rehab and staying there and then they didn’t. Tired of it. Also, not to be mean to the presumably overwhelmed Holby HR department but why would they ask Faith of Drug Theft Fame to come back??? This is why your hospital is like this, your hiring practices are terrible.

I wonder if Max wanting Stevie to take over from him as Clinical Lead is partly because he sees her as like him in some way, whether consciously or subconsciously, and therefore most suited to be his replacement. They're quite similar characters IMO, and both sort of morally ambiguous in similar ways. I'd love them to have a scene about it in the style of some of the scenes Holby had about how alike Henrik and Jac were.
Or maybe it's just because basically the only other option, at least as far as I can remember, is Dylan and Max probably knows Dylan hates that job.

Did anyone else also get the creepy vibes with new character Max Cristie??
The weird smiling at the injured little girl
The weird smiling sitting next to the injured girl in hospital
The weird stroking of the little girl's head
The weird hug with the mum of the little girl where he grabs the back of her head - (that was too much for me, really gave me shivers and I would class that as unprofessional)
Accusing a patient of grooming with no evidence at all (this would have probably made things worse for the victim and it would have been more beneficially to talk to her)
Assaulting and threatening a patient during his first shift FFS
I really, really hope this isn't just weird writing and acting and it's hinting that Max will be revealed to be a creep - something definitely went on in his past because Dylan doesn't like him and we all know Dylan is always right :)

Hi guys! I’m back to writing!!!!
With my one of my lovely best friends motivating me on, we are writing a collaborative work on Ao3, which will also be posted on my Wattpad later. As a little treat for the holidays, I am posting the summary, the first few paragraphs of the work and the link to finish reading the chapter if you like it, so here it goes:
Summary
Join the Cast of Holby and Casualty as part of the Harry Potter universe. Between classes, wizard duels, Voldemort’s return and everything in between, join three unlikely heroes in the journey to saving Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Chapter 1: Prologue (preview)
31st October, 1998
Kevin had already gone to bed by the time Jools had been awoken by her child's whimpering cries. Sensing something was wrong, Jools pulled out her wand and raced to Sah's bedroom, where she found her child crying in their crib, a haunting figure standing over them.
Jools waved her wand, snarling as she walked into the room. "Depulso!" She yelled. A bolt of light blue energy flew at the figure, pushing them back. The figure crashed against the wall, knocking over the bookshelf.
This did not deter the figure, however, and he regained his stamina quickly before starting to retaliate. "Expelliarmus!" He yelled.
However, to Jools ears, this was drowned by the send of Kevin shouting "Protego", sending the red spark of the figure's spell shooting off and creating a dent in the wall at the back of the room.
"Take Sah and run, Jools. Get out of the house." Kevin ground out, taking an offensive stance in front of his wife and child. Jools tried to argue, but the figure was already flicking his wand.

A History of Violence Trailer Review
so, the trailer happened…
I just feel a bit like
bros….. (usual ranting below the cut)
I’ll talk about Teddy first because what is the point of this blog at this point, if not to go on about him? I watched through most of it and I was like “wow, he’s not being slutty, this is amazing for me” and then we got to the end and I clocked into the PR job. For some reason, probably projection-related ones, I struggle to believe he’d cheat on someone. But Casualty has deigned that he must and I guess that Holbyverse infidelity is basically a minor moral offence that about 50% of the population of the city must have committed at least once. Still feels especially bad coming from Teddy; hypocrisy you can see from space or whatever I said about “New Romance For Teddy” in that post a while back. Him crying? Great, I’m horrible to my faves and I love all the episodes where he is sad. And Jan’s there for him, so their relationship hasn’t been ruined past the point of no return (which I’m not surprised about, those two were always going to reconcile). If it weren’t for the infidelity, I’d probably be really excited to see what happens next in Casualty and with Teddy but it’s kinda casting a shadow that I need to come to terms with.
Also, I’m a tiny bit convinced Sah might leave/be killed off and I have been for a while. I don’t think I’ve seen a picture of Arin filming in ages but I’ve seen loads of pictures of all the others together, without them. I thought it would be weird for them to fake-leave only to real-leave a couple months later but this trailer has also got me like 👀👀 for reasons I won’t specify because I’ll sound like a conspiracy theorist, I’m probably being silly and I’m not necessarily expecting that Sah will go but I’m definitely considering the possibility.
Brief acknowledgment of FAITH STUFF WILL NEVER BE OVER, WILL IT? Still no comment beyond that.
For all that I don’t enjoy Faith and Iain stuff, it does seem to be related to some Jacob and Iain stuff in the trailer and I’ve really been enjoying their interactions so there’s that. Honestly, Jacob joining the paramedics has made Iain feel like he’s more integrated into the paramedics as a team than he was when it was just him, Jan, Teddy and Sah.
The stuff with Stevie looks really, really good. I’m really excited to see where they go with that.
So does the stuff with Jodie and Max. And Max’s mum is back too! I do wonder if the same issue I’m having with Teddy right now might start to affect Jodie a little but at least she hasn’t got anyone she should be being loyal to. I also enjoy Dylan’s continued involvement in the Max and Jodie stuff.
New characters look great, we’ve heard about Siobhan joining and she looks interesting even if I’m still bitter about Donna, but I think Ngozi is introduced to us by this trailer so that’s exciting (though I do worry a new staff nurse means Ryan, who was slowly growing on me, is leaving). Also, Zoe returning, which is something I feel like we’ve known about forever now.
Brief, but there was Rida and Rash stuff and I hope we’re about to get a sweet romance with no horrors. I guess I love the horrors on some level, or I wouldn’t watch it, but it’s nice to have something pleasant happening in between.
Oh yeah, Charlie’s leaving. That’s the whole big thing. I know it’s a big landmark for the show but I don’t really care.
Overall, I guess I’m looking forward to it being back. The focus seems to be on the Stevie storyline and the Max and Jodie storyline, and at least that hopefully means that the continuation of the Faith Stuff will take a backseat compared to before the break. Teddy… I don’t know. I believed that the questionable things he did before the break made sense for his character, they felt like reasonable developments on his personality even if they weren’t always the writing choices I would’ve made (cough the proposal). But I struggle to believe he’d do this. I think he would have to be really going through it to do something like that, and I guess he has been really going through it, but unless the writers lean into that fact when making him do this, I think I’ll struggle to come to terms with it as part of his character. A real mixed bag of a trailer for me but at least Casualty-typical horrors are still being inflicted on the paramedics, some things never change.
[I recognise that Iain is also THE STRUGGLER right now, but this is how I made it so this is how it stays.]

So, I did struggle somewhat with focusing my attention on tonight's eps, in part because of the Faith-centricness - I try to pretend any scene with her or about her isn't happening, for my own sake - and in part because I just haven't been feeling great today. That may also lead to this recap of my thoughts being a short one.
But all around, I did think they were both quite good! The Max and Jodie scenes were as much of a highlight as I expected, in particular.
Episode 1, "The Ostrich Effect":
The Max scenes in this ep, especially with Dylan, were utterly fantastic. I really, really love Max. And I also really, really love Dylan. So maybe it's stating the obvious to say that I loved these scenes, but they were just so great!
Max is not coping with all this very well, is he? He seems to have gone into the 'deny and repress everything' mode typical of my favourite characters - I think I'm going to have to keep saying every week how much Max reminds me of Henrik - and... well, yeah, it's understandable, though not necessarily good for him.
And it was wonderful to see Dylan show his caring side so much. Especially with Max, who he's not really been getting on with well previously. Nigel Harman and William Beck played those scenes brilliantly.
It was nice to see Jacob so much, even though he didn't have a big storyline of his own this week.
I hate Faith and, as I say, tried to ignore her storyline. But I will say: I felt so sorry for both Stevie and Natalia. Especially Natalia. She deserves a better mum than Faith. :(
Also, I don't know what the title of this one meant. Oh well.
Episode 2, "One Hundred Years":
I loved the aesthetics of this one. I like episodes set during storms, maybe because they remind me of Holby's "The Perfect Storm" which is one of my favourite episodes. They can also provide interesting challenges for the characters, as they did here.
Getting to see Max's mum was very interesting! I was surprised she told Jodie that Max is ill, I thought it would take longer for Jodie to find out.
It also added further to the mystery of Max's past that I'm hoping will start to unravel soon - and I suppose it already has. He seems to get along pretty well with his mum, which I wouldn't have expected, because I thought they'd have had him be estranged from his parents or something. But we still know basically nothing about his dad, so that's a storyline avenue left to explore.
I don't normally like Iain, but if he gets Faith to leave, I'll be cheering him on. As the saying goes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and I've hated Faith for years, so yeah.
Teddy asking Paige to marry him... wow. I mean, it was certainly a surprise. I can't see the wedding going ahead - I'm expecting more drama between the two of them and Sah to get in the way. I'm also feeling less and less like this will lead to a polyamory story like I'd previously hoped, so yeah. :(
Dylan and Jodie working together was fantastic. I wish there had been more of that.
I felt quite sad that there wasn't more focus on Donna's storyline tonight. I would've liked less Faith focus and more Donna focus. Jaye Jacobs was excellent in the Donna scenes we did get, though!
So, yeah, I don't have a lot to say apart from repeatedly rambling about how much I like Max, lol.

Frances J. Worthington II and his wife Jezebelth Worthington were having a "little" argument with his eldest son Max Worthington, who had been expelled from his previous school thanks to a prank on a teacher.
Frances J.: And how did you get the idea of putting a pin in the seat of your Mathematics teacher!? Do you want us to take you to a military camp!?
Max: I'm sorry pa…
Jezabelth: We haven't raised you to be a rude young man Max! But luckily for you, your father and I have made a decision…
Max (Confused): You're not going to send me to the Military camp, are you?
Frances J.: No, we will send you to study at a distance! Tomorrow will be your first day at that "Academie Le Tour" that is near Veronaville! Our butler has already packed your bags and will take you later to Veronaville!
Max (Shocked): WHAT!?
The next day at Academie Le Tour
Priscilla, Renee and Crystal's residence
Renee and Priscilla were planning a possible sleepover as they waited for their friend Crystal to leave for school together.
Priscilla: And I was thinking of bringing some movies I have at home! I'm sure Crystal will like the idea.
Rénee: I'm going to see if I tell Desiree if she can help us with the snacks or if she can bring us some series that she has in her house!
On the outskirts of the residence were Phinneas and Miranda Vu, who came to talk to Crystal (especially Phinneas, who was very upset).
Phinneas: How is it possible that she hasn't even come to visit us on her vacation!? Well, her "little game" is already over right now!!
Miranda: Brother, you must understand Cristy, she is a girl who wants to have new friends and study hard! We shouldn't worry about her…
Without realizing it, the two had already entered the residence, leaving the two girls confused.
Phinneas: Good morning young ladies! May I know where Crystal Vu is!?
At that moment Crystal was calmly going down the stairs, but her face changed with emotion when she saw her uncle furious with her.
Crystal: Oh no…
Phinneas: Hi Crystal!
