The Insomniac's Diner
Happy Truce @half-deadmagicperson! I've been working on this for a little bit - honestly my ideas started to get so big that I might even make it longer. Just wanted to give you this chapter and wishing you the best! Hope you like it.
The prompt I chose was: Mr. Lancer discovers Danny’s identity in the most random way.
When battling insomnia, the last thing he expected was to be sitting at his favourite grungy diner on the outskirts of Amity, drinking what he presumed was coffee.
William Lancer sighed, clicking his pen absently as he reread his manuscript for the third time that night. Green eyes swept the page, hoping for a spark of inspiration to send his whirling mind into a buzz, spilling the story onto the page. He took another sip, scrunching his nose in disgust at the burnt taste.
“Fresh Cup there Lance?”
He choked, coughing into the cup in surprise. The diner owner stood over him, a smirk across her round face as she waited for an answer. “No, probably for the best Gloria. It’s a school night after all.”
Gloria tutted, settling in across the man in his booth. “This is the third night this week dearie – anything the matter?”
Lancer sighed again. “Not sure – you know I’ve been dealing with this for years.”
“Well, yes, but it seems like it might be a little more regular now,” Gloria replied, humming slightly. “In all the years I’ve seen you William, this ranks top three. Is it the book again? The teens at the school? Don’t tell me it’s the g-“
“Shh!”
Gloria and Lancer turned to the wide-eyed cook behind the counter. “Don’t jinx it Gloria. He might show up again?”
Curiosity bubbled through Lancer. “He?” He queried.
Gloria shrugged. “It’s been a week, I doubt he’ll show up again. Besides, all he does is show the card anyway.”
Lancer frowned. “The card?”
Gloria pointed to the wall of frayed photos under a large sign labelled Friends of Dale. “The All-You-Can-Eat one. It’s the card where that person and anyone in their family can eat for free after completing the Dale’s challenge in one sitting.”
“The one that’s everything on the menu topped with a fudge sundae?”
“That’s the one! It’s been 6 years since anyone even tried.” Gloria fidgeted with the menu on the table. ‘Anyway, this kid keeps showing up here at random hours of the morning and asks for the same thing: Three pancakes topped with whipped cream and a coffee with an expresso shot and 7 sugars.”
Lancer gagged. “7 sugars? At that point why drink coffee?”
“You’re missing the point Lance,” Gloria tapped the menu card, attempting to gain his attention. “This kid, he’s like…. I don’t know. But he’s high school aged.”
Lancer bristled. “One of my students?”
Gloria shook her head. “Don’t think so – unless you have a student with white hair who can fly.”
The pen dropped from Lancer’s hand as the man’s jaw dropped. “What?”
Gloria smiled mischievously. “You heard me.”
Lancer grabbed his pen, clicked it a few times then set it on the table. “How long does he stay?”
Gloria stood up, smoothing out the front of her uniform while she eyed the rest of the diner. “Depends on the day. Often, I hear him muttering about a curfew. If our parents made our curfew after 2am on a school night I’d question their sanity.” She frowned, nodding her head to the left. “Gotta jet. But you’re in for a treat.”
Puzzled, Lancer traced Gloria’s steps across the checkered floor.
“The usual?” Gloria asked warmly as she approached the booth furthest from the door.
“Yeah – and if you have ice and a first aid kit, I’d appreciate it.”
Lancer’s blood ran cold as Phantom’s voice softly echoed through the diner. He peered subtly over his booth, barely making out the gray hoodie with a tuft of snow white hair poking out of it. Vaguely, he heard Gloria tell him she couldn’t fork over the first aid kit but took his order down. She walked back towards the counter, locking eyes with the teacher and mouthed what suspiciously looked like Told you in his direction.
Lancer stared back at his manuscript, mind reeling at this new development. Phantom here. How long? Have they every been here at the same time? Why?
“You look confused.”
Startled, Lancer jumped out of his seat, spilling coffee over the first page as the young ghost materialized across from him.
Danny Phantom winced, frowning at the mess. “Shoot, sorry.” The boy grabbed papers and suddenly the coffee fell through the table and onto the floor. Once the table was solid again, he picked up the manuscript, made them into a neat pile and handed them back to the man. “I should know better.”
Lancer stood, gaping at the boy now joining him at the booth. “It’s… alright…” He sat back down gingerly, eyeing him warily. The gray hoodie, he realized, was from an old spirit wear campaign from Casper High that was discontinued in the 80s; Lancer swore he saw them in a stock room in the basement a couple weeks back. Phantom’s gloved hands were in his sleeves, the left pressed down on his right. Green eyes stared back, confusion and a bit of concern shining back at him. “Long night?”
The spell was broken; the teen groaned loudly, shrinking into his seat. “It always is. Seriously, I thought I’d never get away from Technus’ babble. He’s almost as bad as T-a friend of mine.” Gloria came over, giving the boy his food, a bowl of ice and coffee and left the pair with a hint of smile. “What about you? Didn’t think teachers stayed up until 2am on a school night.”
Lancer laughed. “Try being a teacher in America. Trust me, I’m not up because I want to.” He watched the boy take a piece of ice, wrapped it in a napkin before pressing down on his arm. Ignoring the action and the wince that followed, Lancer continued. “I’ve struggled with insomnia over the last 10 years, sometimes I can get through it, sometimes… I embrace it.”
“Some would say neglecting sleep is bad for you,” the boy quipped.
“Some haven’t had the nights I’ve had,” he retorted.
Phantom hummed, taking a bite out of the first pancake with his left hand. “Not like I can’t relate,” he muttered. The ghost’s eyes flickered to the stack of papers. “What’s that?”
A soft smile graced his lips. “Just a little bit of writing.”
Phantom hummed again, this time bringing his head to his hand thoughtfully. “Like a book?”
“Exactly that. I figured if I couldn’t sleep, I’d at least work on it a bit.”
“Did it help?”
Lancer laughed sardonically. “Nope.” He rubbed his eyes tiredly. “And I have to cover at least one extra period tomorrow. Any chance your escapades destroyed part of the school tonight?”
The boy flushed green. “Hey! I don’t intentionally destroy buildings! I can’t pick where I’m thrown!”
Lancer chuckled. “I was joking.” The pair sat in silence, Phantom continuing his meal while Lancer drank the rest of his burnt coffee. Eventually, his curiosity got the better of him. “How long have you been coming here?”
Phantom shrugged. “Apparently this place has a bunch of …. What did Frostbite call them…. Essentially faultlines,” He made a face. “Not quite that. Anyway, a bunch of these faultlines the run under this diner that deter ghosts from coming here. It’s like a ghost truce space – some of our powers don’t work. We’re hardwired to avoid it.”
Lancer’s face twitched. “So… like it’s haunted.”
Phantom smiled mischievously. “You get it.” He stretched, taking a sip of coffee before settling in again. “Anyway, found that out a couple months back and remembered that I had the card so I’ve been coming here when I need to fuel up.”
Lancer nodded, making a mental note to ask about it later. One never got this close to the ghost hero without a ghost fight, let alone know a bit about him. His curiosity was peaked, brimming with wanting to learn everything he could about the visitor. All the questions suddenly left him as he saw Phantom add more sugar to his coffee. “Eventually, that’ll stop being coffee.”
Phantom chuckled. “Good. It’s gross – I only use it for the caffeine anyway. I still have at least another hour to go before I can actually go home.”
Lancer glanced at his watch; 2:30am. “I don’t envy you,” he said softly.
The boy’s eyebrow quirked upward. “Who would?” he asked honestly.
Lancer frowned at the response but before he was able to think hard about it, a new bulletin flashed across the TV, completely stealing the boy’s attention to the conversation at hand.
“Shoot,” he said with a frown. He downed the coffee in one go and floated into the air. “Gotta run – maybe I’ll see you around sometime Mr. Lancer.” He flew up through the ceiling and then the diner was silent again.
Lancer barely managed to wave, frowning at the bizarre conversation.
“Harmless right?”
Lancer jumped out of his skin as Gloria snuck up behind him. “Hell House Gloria, anyone ever suggest you might be a ghost?”
Gloria chuckled, giving him the bill. “You know you love it.” She started to clean the table, frowning slightly. “Huh, poor thing must have been in a rush.”
“Seemed so – why?”
Gloria flashed the membership card his way. “He left this behind. I’ll just keep it until he shows up next.”
Lancer grew pale. “Gloria – are you sure that’s his card?”
Gloria’s eyes sparkled. “Yes – why?”
“Because I recognize that name,” he said softly.
Gloria smiled in understanding. “You teach those kids right? Little one should be high school bound by now.”
He nodded.
“Well it’s his card – no doubt about it. Not stolen either, I did the test and all. It’s him.” She shrugged, turning her back as she pocketed the evidence. “Don’t think too hard about it – it’ll keep you up at night.”
Lancer sat frozen, his curiosity wrapping around such an absurd theory that he couldn’t shake. There was no way. No possible way this could be true and yet –
The card said Fenton.

Fic Writer Review
I’m so sorry, I hadn’t seen this in my mentions until now months after the fact- Thank you to @flutteringdreams-matw for tagging me and apologies for being super late rip
1) How many works do you have on AO3?
Sixteen, surprisingly. Quarantine got me writing more than I have in years lol
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
138,410....V happy about that cause writer’s block had me on such a chokehold
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Hmm, published is one fandom, Danny Phantom. And unpublished is stuff I had written for Percy Jackson. So two proper ones.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
We pulling up the stats again~
1. Family Reunion
2. A Green Thumb
3. Vibe Check
4. Ghost Smarts!
5. #Stitch
5. Which of your fics do you want more attention for?
I don’t think I have a preference currently? Any fic interaction is greatly appreciated, thanks to anyone checking them out 💖
6. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Confession time: I am really shit at responding to comments. Part of it was because I had this weird thought that I would get really annoying bombarding everyone with replies 💀💀 Really dumb considering I love getting responses. I’ll try to get better now, prepare for spam 💃
7. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Probably I Love You to Pieces - pretty hastily written fic, a bit messy. But you know, it fits the bill with that rather Slap Chop commercial of an ending.
8. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not yet but definitely have some prompts for some stored up in my notes app! So far got some crossovers planned with Avatar, Spiderman, Young Justice, Ben 10, The Flash, Percy Jackson, Gotham, etc.
The most random shit mixed with DP 🔥
9. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Constructive criticism only really, wouldn’t consider it hate. Fingers crossed we stay that way lol
10. Do you write smut? if so what kind?
Nope~
Funny cause I’ve mentioned offhandedly that I like to write fics to people who don’t regularly read them and they often assume that’s what I write. It’s when I realized the term fanfiction is often seen as synonymous with smut when that's not entirely the case lol
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have not~
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope~
13. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Well, in the phandom I enjoy Grey Ghost, but I don’t primarily read ship fics for DP. Here for the lore bb 👻👻
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
“I never will” is a strong phrase. Maybe just, “won’t for a long time.” With the Brewing of a Storm is in the backburner rn, and although I had some continuations planned for Things That Lurk in the Dark, those will have to wait
15. What are your writing strengths?
Well, I have fun writing dialogue and I’m pretty good at coming up with ideas as I write. Improvisation and the fact that I actually really really enjoy doing it.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Many. so many. Biggest ones are probably actually forcing myself to sit down and write, I’m bad at action sequences, and I can be inconsistent. Recently realized I break POV a lot. It's okay though, room for improvement ~
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Uh, I would need to do a lot of research. Gotta be careful with it. Closest I could attempt somewhat okay is dialogue in Spanish, porque es mi segundo idioma. Pero definitivamente no soy hablante nativa entonces....I'll limit it to this answer lol
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Percy Jackson, and those crappy fics will not see the light of day. To the ghost zone 👉🏼👻
19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
Tough cause I enjoy them all in their own way. But I got super into Comfortably Numb and then let out a good chuckle at the end of Family Reunion (which I do plan to continue someday lol)
20. What fic are you most proud of?
Comfortably Numb since I’m actually committing to a longfic with this one, which is quite a challenge for me. The response in the comments is also super, super cool. I love everyone’s insight so much. The predictions, the analysis, all really awesome. Thank you for making writing it so much more fun!
Tagging: Hopefully I’m not double tagging here, but @summerssixecho @ave-aria @echoghost1

Fic Writer Review
Thank you for the tag, @flutteringdreams-matw!! I loved reading your review, and I’m stoked to have the opportunity to fill this out myself, too!
1) How many works do you have on AO3?  46. And not all of them have been transferred over from FFN. There’s at least another dozen between multiple fandoms over there, lol.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 656,571. My word.
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?  When one of your fandoms is DC Comics...Does that count as one or several? LOL. xD
There’s been Merlin, Danny Phantom, Batman (Comics), Young Justice (cartoon), Teen Titans (cartoon), Titans (TV Show), Smallville (TV show), The Justice League (movie), The Flash (Arrowverse TV Show), Miraculous Ladybug, Harry Potter, Rise of the Guardians, How to Train Your Dragon, Sword Art Online (anime), Blue Exorcist (anime), The Bright Sessions (podcast). Might be missing some.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? 1. Come Alive (Young Justice) 2. life, if well lived (Batman) 3. On Three (Miraculous Ladybug) 4. a million dreams (Batman) 5. Genesis (Danny Phantom)
@redriotted should be informed that my top two are fics she requested from me via prompts I’m sure neither of us expected I would ever fill. Love you, dear! I credit you for these fics!
5. Which of your fic do you want more attention for?  Difficult question for me to answer. I’ve been gifted with lovely feedback on most of my work. I guess if I were to choose one it would be Locking Up the Sun (Batman)? It’s a Fantasy AU. A fantastic exercise in world-building. I had so much fun with it that I’ve been playing with the idea of spinning bits of it into an original work.
6. Do you respond to comments, why or why not? YES. I try to respond to every review and comment I receive. I understand it takes a lot of time and energy for some people, but from the moment I posted my first Merlin fic in 2011, I needed to respond, even if with nothing more than a little thank you. And I’m not about to stop the habit. I met some of my dearest friends responding to reviews. I still meet wonderful people doing so. :) 7. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?  Uhhhh, I’m not sure? I guess it depends on perspective. Most of my fics end happily, or rather, I am quite heavy-handed on the comfort part of the Hurt/Comfort trope. I do bittersweet more often than I do angst. I wrote a Merlin AU inspired by The Picture of Dorian Gray about Uther Pendragon that was pretty angsty? Grief was another one, also in the Merlin fandom. I’m sure there were some in my FFN Merlin oneshot collection Rabbits and Bathroom Breaks that apply, but lord knows I hardly remember half of what I’ve posted in that monster.
8. Do you write crossovers? Once. I wrote a Rise of the Guardians/Frozen crossover with an Elsa/Jack Frost pairing as a gift for a friend.  9. Have you ever received hate on a fic? Oh, of course. Who hasn’t? I’ve been cursed out more than once, too. It always stings, but it’s a matter of stepping back and asking myself: is this constructive? will this make me a better writer? Once you frame the comment/review that way, it’s a bit easier to see that it’s unproductive to linger on it for long. It’s someone’s personal preferences and/or beliefs not aligning with your own. Or someone who can’t quite distance themselves from fiction enough to realize you are not always what you write, nor are you a reflection of the characters/plot you’re writing about.
10. Do you write smut? if so what kind? Rarely, and only as crack or as a joke. Nothing I would ever share in public. RIP Uther Pendragon/Troll fic of circa 2013-2014. I do so wish I’d saved you somewhere safe. 11. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, but I have no idea where they are posted or in what language. Most of the requests came over FFN, so I’m sure they’re available somewhere. In some capacity.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Not quite. My friend and I wrote every other line of the aforementioned Uther/Troll fic in a chatroom, if that counts. 13. What’s your all time favorite ship? I’m far more interested in platonic/family relationships in pretty much every fandom I’m in. If I were to choose one? Adam Hayes/Caleb Michaels from The Bright Sessions. Or Barry Allen/Iris West in The Flash.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?  *eyes Shift warily*
I KID. I made a promise over half a decade ago, and I intend on keeping it.  In all seriousness: A Merlin time-travel fic I started ages upon ages ago. I hardly remember what the point of it was. There is a fun scene I’ve considered posting as a oneshot more than once over the years, though, just because it makes me laugh.
15. What are your writing strengths?  Dialogue, I think? I love it.
16. What are your writing weaknesses? Imagery/action. Give me a single scene focused on a conversation between two hopeless individuals that need some TLC and let me forget about where they are sitting or if they are sitting at all or if there are things that need describing around them, please and thank you.  17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?  I’ve done it, in some capacity. I used my knowledge of Latin grammar from old high school classes to try to write spells for Merlin fics. I probably butchered quite a few, lol. I think it’s important to use language as accurately as possible, though, if it were to be used at all. Most of the time I take the lazy man’s route and use dialogue tags and italics, just so I can avoid making ignorant mistakes. As a reader, as long as I have translations in front of me, I’m golden.  18. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Merlin. I owe that fandom everything. 19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? Come Alive. I don’t know that I have ever had so much fun writing anything in my life. a million dreams (my Flying Grayson time travel tear-jerker) and Not a Bit (my MLB Brothers AU, inspired by the original PV) come in close second. I dig my family feels, obviously. 20. What fic are you most proud of?  Shift, my Danny Phantom AU, if only because it’s been seven years since I posted its first chapter. Writing it has felt like pulling teeth at certain points, but it has been with me for a long, long time. Rereading it is like looking at a time lapse of how I’ve developed as a writer, lol.  Heart of Gold (Merlin) is another. Before Shift, it was the longest fic I’d ever written, one, and it was my first time really developing an OC/attempting a redemption arc as well. It was far from a perfect fic, but boy did I feel like a queen when I finished it. I’m sure you might’ve done something like this at some point, @cdelphiki, but here you go! @breynekai-tfc, too! And anyone else who sees and wants to share, please do so!

Fic Writer Review
@floralflowerpower and @cleanlenins tagged me. Thanks friends!
1) How many works do you have on AO3?
46
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
618,810    o.O It’s that much. Dang.
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
2 (or maybe technically 3?). I almost exclusively write for Danny Phantom but I’ve also done a Gravity Falls crossover. And when I was in ninth grade, I wrote a Doctor Who fan fiction, which isn’t posted anywhere.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1) Double Discovery
2) Summoning
3) Fangs or no Fangs
4) Face to Face
5) Below the Greenhouse
5. Which of your fic do you want more attention for?
My Invisobang story, I am you (and you are me). It’s my second longest story and I worked really hard on it but it hasn’t got a lot of interaction. I’m really excited about the ideas and really want to talk to people about it.
6. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes! I respond to every comment I get. I love answering questions, talking about the phic, and just letting the readers know how grateful I am.
7. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Hope Can Be a Heavy Thing to Hold, definitely. Most of my stories actually end on a happy note but that one... not so much.
8. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I’ve only written on crossover, the Gravity Falls one I mentioned earlier. It’s called The Mystery Shack Spooks.
9. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Unfortunately yes. I once got a really mean comment about the way I wrote Vlad in Hope. I deleted it right after but it still wasn’t nice :(
10. Do you write smut? if so what kind?
No. Nope. No. No way.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I never have but that would be really cool if it happened.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, I haven’t.
13. What’s your all time favorite ship?
I’m not much of a romantic shipper and of the ships which I do like decently, I don’t think I can pick one. Maybe Dark Grey (Valerie Grey and Dan Phantom)? It’s not all that common but I’ve seen some really interesting character stuff done with it. Also that ship and Dan redemption tend to happen together and I love Dan redemption so much.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
That one’s hard since I really only write one story at a time so unless I’m actively writing something, I don’t consider it a WIP. I do have a list of stories I do plan on continuing: “It was an accident, I swear”. The finally story in “Life and Death is all Perspective.” A sequel/ epilogue to “I am you (and you are me).” The Hope Sequel.
But I have firm plans for all of those in my mind and definitely plan to get to them, even if it takes a long time. So I guess... I did plan on clean up/expand on the story I wrote for @thesoulspulse ‘s Danny Program au, but I don’t think that will happen. You guys can at least enjoy the unedited version.
15. What are your writing strengths?
I’m a hurt/comfort writer through and through. I love writing heart to hearts and that type of dialogue so I think I’m pretty good at scenes like that.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Fluff and humor. I don’t write a lot of this and when I do, it’s a struggle. I’m to the point in Face to Face where I’ve got a good amount of family bonding fluff and humor scenes planned and it’s already kicking my butt. 😥
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I’ve never done that before but I would if it was relevant. Actually wait...I did make up a Latin summoning for a phic once so I kinda have? Either way, I’d do my research and try my best to get it right.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Technically it was Doctor Who. I wrote a one shot in ninth grade, for my English class. *shiver* My teacher liked it at least and thought it was really good. Then again, I’m pretty sure she had no idea it was a Doctor Who fic so...😂
19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
Oh come on. I can’t pick a favorite! It really does depend on what I’m in the mood for (since yes, I do go back and read my own fics for my own enjoyment). So I’m gonna say I am you (and you are me) since I managed to write about my two favorite tropes, clones and split Danny, in the same story.
20. What fic are you most proud of?
The fic I’m most proud of hands down is Face to Face. I’ve been working on it since February of 2020 and it’s at over 180k words. I’ve put a lot of effort and a lot of planning into it. A lot of planning. There’s a suprsingly number of moving parts and story threads I’m trying to keep track of. And every time I update and people comment, a part of me is still surprised that that someone other than me likes what started out as this very niche story. But I’m just so grateful.

Embassy to Zahamo
Envoy Baruus-Kisma
Praise to He Who is as Thunder!
Having made our way to Tensha's capital at Zahamo, we spent two days attending the Royal Court. On the morning of our third day, I withdrew the embassy and began our return journey to Ktere. I shall to the best of my ability put down my observations and recollections of these past few days, and all that occurred here. Though it is likely I will arrive along with or soon after this letter, I wish to preserve my impressions of Zahamo and its Court while they are still bright, though they may be disordered and shocking.
Zahamo lies in the mountainous land in the southwest of Nlamo. It was built by Tensha in the early years of his kingship as a new capital without affiliation to any single nation or people in the land, although it is situated close to his childhood and ancestral home in the town of Gande. Indeed Gande lies at the lower end of the road that is the only approach to Zahamo. This road switches up the mountain to the capital, guarded at several points by garrisoned forts.
Zahamo itself is situated in a high valley. Stout stone walls surround the town, enclosing an oval area some two hundred paces across its longest line, and one hundred and fifty paces at its thickest point. The area within is sparsely filled, as the town is yet young and considered chiefly as the personal holding of Tensha. Apart from his palace and banqueting hall, the compound contains the houses of his Court, a number of garrisons, quarters for visitors, and much of the remaining land is left over for grazing of their animals.
King Tensha is a man raised from modest backgrounds to supreme rule in this realm. His father was a renowned hunter and a scout in the garrison of Gande, and his mother was a merchant and respected fighter. He served from a young age in Gande's garrison, distinguishing himself as a great warrior and leader of men in a number of regional conflicts. He took leadership of the clan and the town in his middle thirties, and began the series of wars that would unify Nlamo under his rule.
The court at Zahamo comprises Tensha himself, his chief priest and companion Matwe, his heir Oadan (a sort of nephew of the King), several other priests and judges, and a number of representatives and local princes from across Nlamo. From what I could observe, Tensha's court is loyal to the King, and not beset by cabals or cliques, save perhaps a gathering of priests and judges around Matwe.
Though past the thirtieth year of his reign and already in his elder years, Tensha is still a powerful man, broad across the shoulders and with an erect noble carriage. We were received warmly by him and Matwe on our arrival, given a tour of the capital, and formally blessed by his priests. After that we were shown to our guest quarters, the troops were allowed the use of an empty barracks, and we were granted the freedom of the compound to rest from our travels.
We did not see Tensha again until we were formally presented to the court the following afternoon. After the members of the embassy had all been introduced to Tensha and his advisors, he entertained us with a drill of his personal troop – soldiers from across the land selected by Tensha for their prowess, skill, and bravery, and drilled personally by the King. We responded by drilling our own escort, and showing feats of strength and speed on the part of chosen men from the ranks. The occasion was received with great warmth on all parts. I spoke directly to the King only briefly, to compliment him on the skill of his personal guard and to admire the location of his capital.
A great banquet was held that evening. A number of cattle were freshly slaughtered in honour of our embassy, and served alongside spiced soups, loaves of boiled grains, stews of many vegetables, and the meat of an elephant. Tensha gave a speech on receiving us and the opportunity for friendship of our two realms, praising He Who is as Thunder most handsomely, delivering some kind words in a passable attempt at our tongue. Throughout the meal his chief priest watched all of our embassy closely. I half dared to believe
Forgive me, my hand can scarce write these words. How may a hand commit to paper what the mind will not admit?
It was as though Matwe could pierce my breast and see the true intentions of our embassy in visiting Nlamo. These magics are known, but none save the most exalted sages of our land can begin to practice upon them. How can a mere priest of a foreign court expose a man's inner thoughts with such ease?
At the end of the feast, long past the setting of the sun, I excused myself to return to my quarters and begin composing this letter. Most of the eNlami stayed to continue their revels, as did many of our men. Upon entering my chamber, I was seized by two strong hands and borne to the wall, where I could see the face of my assailant. It was Matwe. The same Matwe who I had seen not moments before in spirited debate at Tensha's side, had contrived somehow to steal to my chambers before me, across open land, though I took the straightest route.
He spoke in a thin voice, saying: “Your intentions in this land are known, Envoy. Your embassy will leave at first light, and you will not return to Nlamo. This land will never yield to your bestial emperor. Heed these words.” This was all spoken before I had opportunity to react – for it is a quickly uttered language and his speech is more rapid than many of his countrymen – and as I opened my mouth to protest, with a quick jerk of his body I was pushed along the wall and into the corner of the chamber. The priest opened his mouth, as wide as a mouth may open, and then further, and the shadow inside his gaping jaw seemed to grow and overpower all the senses I possessed.
I awoke in my bed, as the dawn was beginning to lighten the eastern sky. With the greatest haste I assembled our embassy and left Zahamo, without formally bidding farewell to Tensha or his court.
I have written before of the religious ceremonies of the cult of Gaapo, and their use of teas that induce strange visions and dreams in the rituals of their faith. I have discounted this as an explanation for my strange encounter with Matwe. All food and drink at the banquet were served from a common source, and no others of the embassy spoke to me of visions. Those who stayed at the revels through the night told me Matwe was present at the high table for the whole celebration, leaving only as the fires began to flicker and die.
My spirit was shaken by this meeting. I momentarily believed that I must advise against the invasion of this country, such was the shock of Matwe's actions and the gravity of his words. Our expedition must be prepared for spirited resistance and bitter conflict, as I have previously written. But furthermore, we must prepare for the use of magics and crafts unknown in our own lands. The eNlami will not be conquered easily.

Inspired by this scene.
Jim ran his hand across his face. "Okay, let's do this one more time." He eyes the floating man in front of him with distain. "Take this delivery to Casper High's main office, get them to sign the slip and then come back here. Got it?"
The ghost blinked, wide wonderous eyes looking down at the man in front of him. JIm sighed. "Okay repeat it to me."
"I take the box."
"Yes."
He pointed to the large box of chalk next to Jim. "This one?"
"Yes."
"Go to the High School."
"Yes."
"Get the scary typing lady to sign the slip."
"Yes." Jim held his breath, hoping this time was the one...
...
...
"I keep the box."
"No. You give them the box Boxy. It's their box."
"But I'm the Box Ghost! They're my boxes."
"It's their delivery," Jim explained for the fourth time. "You can't keep the box. Try again."
"I take the box."
"Yes."
"... I keep my box?"
"NO!"
Jim's frustration rose as he glared up at the Box Ghost.
Their standoff lasted all of ten seconds before Boxy yelled "Beware!" grabbing the delivery in question and disappearing from the warehouse.
Jim blinked, then sighed tiredly. "Carl!" he called out. "Get ready for another complaint!"
He heard Carl groan. "Boxy?"
"Boxy."
