Until Your Lungs Give Out - Prologue
Tumblr media
Yandere AU & Dystopian AU
Genre: Mature, Horror, Angst, Fluff, Slight Humour, Sci-fi, Dystopian
Pairing: Ateez X Reader
Words: 1,331
Warnings: Minor violence mentioned. This is a Yandere story, it will contain themes such as stalking, violence, obsession, possessive natures, and just general overall creepiness and swearing. You have been warned.
A/n: I blame @anyamaris for feeding my ideas, and thus helping me create this. I plan for it to be almost a mix between Resident Evil dystopia (movies, specifically the third) and My Chemical Romance Danger Day's dystopia world. With robots! I really hope you all enjoy this little teaser hehehe As always, feedback is greatly appreciated! Enjoy~
Also, gentle reminder that I don’t do tag lists.
Mini Masterlist
The crackle of static sounds through your headpiece. The low hum of electricity surrounds you, what’s left of the city’s lights flickering above you as you race down the deserted streets. The heart of the city is a dangerous place, no matter how abandoned it might be. You’ll risk it any day of the week.
You have to. There’s no other choice.
Long since has the world gone to shit.
No, no major disease wiped out the planet. No virus that caused people to become the living dead, either. Humans are very much still alive, though their numbers dwindle every day, replaced by the Bots of Life, guaranteeing that people can never truly die.
These androids are so lifelike, that you cannot easily tell the difference between them and humans unless you are looking for them. Emotions, memories, habits - they are all the same.
Life Bots, another term for these machines, require a human host. Millions of underground facilities have been made to house the Sacrifices - unlawfully named, in your opinion - for the Bots of Life to thrive. All that’s needed is a specialized pod and a mind link, and humans never have to age again. They can live vicariously through their android counterparts, forever.
Great sale’s pitch! If humans actually got a choice in the matter…
What’s left of humanity fight to survive, living in hidden suburbs and scraping to get by every day. Every Life Bot is programmed to deliver humans to their intended Sacrificial Pod, destroying what’s left of the living world.
No more hunger. No more strife, chaos, or pain. Only order, and peace.
All things which are easier said than done.
An interesting side effect early Life Bot integrators noticed was how suddenly, members of their family which had undergone the Sacrifice seemed to lose all previous autonomy. The Creator made sure to emphasize his ideals into the Bots of Life, nearly forcing every human associated with one to make the change. He wanted total control over every living human, holding their lives in the palms of his hand for his own gains.
Naturally, the humans rebelled.
War broke out, and now all that remains of the earth above sea level are wastelands. Deserts span more areas than they used to, cracked, dry earth giving way to dead zones not even the Life Bots dare to traverse.
Still, there are those unlucky enough to be forced to live above ground without any protection, unable to have afforded to buy their way into the luxurious underwater cities or air fortresses that had been massed produced for the majority of the upper class and wealthy in society. Those left behind are stranded, lest they be forced to become a Life Bot of their own.
That’s where you come in.
You are one of the last few survivors in this division who still remains on earth, fighting for the human’s survival. Looking out for the stranded is what you do best, and you’ve made taking down Life Bots look like it’s child’s play. Which is exactly why you’re racing to answer the distress call you’ve just received not even a mere five minutes ago. There seems to be one human in particular that keeps sticking his nose into trouble looking for spare parts and supplies. It’s starting to get on your nerves, for he also seems insistent to flirt with you every chance he gets.
Only this time, he’s not alone.
When you originally latched onto the signal, you heard at least three distinct voices calling for help. The noises in the background indicated a fight, so there had to at least have been two more people with them, holding off the Life Bots at the time. You just hope you make it before someone gets hurt. Or worse.
Revving the engine to your motorcycle, you pick up your speed. The distress call came from just around the corner two more blocks up, and from the littered corpses of Life Bots you can see lining the street, you know a fight has just taken place here not that long ago.
Rounding the corner, you skid to a halt.
The screeching of your tires on the asphalt draws the attention of the small group of about eight males that seems to be surrounded on all sides by a small hoard of twenty Life Bots. A few hold makeshift weapons, like broken pipes and a rusted crowbar, while two hold Laftas, specialized stun guns made for subduing the Bots of Life. One practically cowers on the ground amidst the circle of survivors, covering their ears and shaking uncontrollably as his friends surround him as best they can.
The moment you hop off of your bike, you notice a familiar male’s eyes light up, hope dancing on his features. A smile begins to stretch across his features.
A click of your helmet, and it retracts from your face, practically disappearing from sight.
“I told you she would come!” Wooyoung, your resident damsel in distress, and certified pain in your ass, cheers.
“Yeah, yeah,” the tall one with what appears to be a sniper riffle strapped to his back, rolls his eyes. “If we manage to get out of this alive, remind me to give you one of my chocolate bars from my hidden stash.”
The way Wooyoung’s eyes light up even further says it all.
“Can’t go one day without getting yourself into trouble, huh, Gopher?” There’s an almost teasing lilt to your voice despite the disappointed sigh you heave as you spring into action.
Drawing your katana from your back, you unholster your Lafta.
“Guilty.” He chuckles, shrugging lightly.
You get to work, slicing through the Bots of Life as if they were made of silk rather than metal. With your opposite hand, you manage to shoot every target you set your eyes upon, cleaning up this mess in no time. Once finished, you make a show of twirling your sword a few times before sheathing it, shoving your gun back into its holster with a firm thwack.
“There,” you send a firm nod in their direction. “Get yourselves someplace safe before more of them return. I don’t like making multiple pitstops for the same people in the same night.”
You turn around, moving back over towards your bike before a voice calling out to you from behind halts you in your tracks.
“Wait!”
You spare the unfamiliar male a glance over your shoulder. He seems to have somewhat shaggy black hair, a black and red leather jacket covering his torso. A red birthmark rests beside his left eye.
“How can we ever repay you?”
You offer him a tight smile in return, noticing how more than just Wooyoung seems to be staring at you with wide eyes filled with awe.
“Keep yourselves out of trouble, and you won’t have to.”
The one crouched on the ground finally stands back to his feet. He rests a trembling hand on the shoulder of the male closest to him, who is also wearing a black and red leather jacket, but in a slightly different style.
“Really,” his voice comes out shaky, staring at you through thinly wired glasses. A tattered beige cardigan rests over his shoulders, a stark head of bright blue hair falling over his forehead and almost covering his eyes. “We should be able to do something.”
You huff slightly to yourself in amusement, finally crossing the last few steps to your motorcycle.
“Don’t worry about it.”
With a smooth movement, your leg is tossed over the seat, the engine revving to life. A click to your ear, and your helmet has rematerialized.
A final nod is sent their way before you’re racing back down the street, on the hunt for any more distress calls that might come your way for the night.
That is the last they see of you for two weeks, until your entire worlds come crashing down.

redacted filipino hcs & thoughts! lol
mostly about shaw pack + vamps + guy&honey
inpsired by @erial-c nahiya akong itag ka pero hiiii po
the trivia and translations are probably not accurate 🧍‍♀️please forgive my very scattered brain thoughts
darlin probably does arnis. it's why they fight like a menace 😈 sam has never known peace since he's seen em wield an ital
arnis - a ph martial art
itak - a bolo sword(?)
asher doesn't call milo "tol" bc he's not tall /j
"tol" is like the equivalent of "dude" as in a way of calling your friend
lovely & darlin would probably call vincent & sam their asawang (gets niyo ba asawa + aswang)
asawa means spouse or wife or husband
aswang is a ph mythological creature. different sources tell different things but what is mostly agreed upon is that (1) they're nocturnal (2) they usually pretend to be humans in the day time if not (3) they hide in the woods (4) they prey on children, pregnant women (specifically for their unborn child), and maybe new borns. they often get lumped with vampires though i'm not too sure how accurate that is.
aspins have a very special place in darlin's heart. sam's cabin in the woods usually have attract lots of them and they never had the heart to turn them away. in a way too, they know what it's like to being wild, dirty, street dog.
aspin - a dog breed in the ph that is sort of a mix of other breeds. they often get a bad rep for being street dogs and not having a particular breed.
vincent n his cars get featured a lot in those carspotting around manila tiktoks. whenever lovely finds em they make sure to send those to vincent lol
(this is me also hoping that vincent gets to keep at least few of them when they leave the house of solaire)
not entirely sure how the entire mate thing would translate into ph culture but even with all that david & asher would insist on doing things properly before marriage - they would mamanhikan to their partner's parents respectively hehehe
mamanhikan or pamamanhikan is a like a traditional practice of going to the fiancee's family's house and asking for their hand in marriage lol.
whenever they drive down shaw boulevard, the pack would turn to david and go "taga dito ka di ba?" or something to that effect HAHAHAHHA
"taga-dito ka 'di ba?" = "you're from (around) here, right?"
angel know it's general cleaning morning whenever david is blasting opm songs or old timey songs around their house.
asher would take panliligaw very seriously!!!!! magpapaalam sa magulang lagi ni baabe paglalabas sila!!! aabangan niya after work si baabe tapos "sabay na raw sila umuwi" galawan mo asher talbot !!!! dyan ka magaling !!!! and ofc it never stopped kahit naging sila na ni baabe :)))
panliligaw or ligaw is a more traditional pre-dating courting stage in a relationship. lol
marie has definitely said to david & asher & milo & darlin at some point na "kakaselpon niyo yan". it doesn't matter that they're adults.
"kakaselpon niyo yan" = "it's because of that (damn) phone"
this one is a bit more in general: vampire houses have THE filipino family drama. territory/progeny disputes? grudges? backstabbing? been there done that.
speaking of vamps: pre-turning, sam was once an altar boy (darlin: hahaha samkristan)
speaking of sam (again): pre-turning, he has a picture in baguio, riding a horse & wearing a cowboy hat. when darlin found it they couldn't stop staring at it for a loong while.
sweetheart LOVES singing. marie loves having them over for karaoke.
marie would drag milo's ahh every night for simbang gabi.
simbang gabi - mass service for the nine nights leading up to christmas eve.
guy's filipino nickname would be "totoy"
"totoy" is another way of refering to a younger male. addtionally, it's also often used as a euphism for a dick HAHAJAHA
guy definitely has a tiktok acct tapos don siya nagpaparinig kay honey HAHAHAHA lagi niyang kinakanta "crush" by tweens of pop
guy always does those cheesy, poetry pick up line jokes to honey like:
"cheese, cheese, cheese. gusto kita i-keese (read: kiss)"
"mga 6 out of 10. medyo pilit yung rhyme"
"honey naman 😭😓"
translation:
"cheese, cheese, cheese. i want to give you a k-eese."
"a 6 out of 10. the rhyming was a bit forced."
"honey, c'mon 😭😓."
guy and honey are definitely oa x nonchalant pairings but may i also suggest na they are jeje x pogi typings. they both definitely have kanal humor though HAHAHA
- after returning to the pack, darlin couldnt help but cry tear up after marie called them "anak" again
anak = child

Hello! Happy N7 Day!
I've been waffling for about three weeks on how to word this, but the N7 Day/posting the first chapter of Mezzo combination made me say, "fuck it, just go ahead and incoherently gush."
To put it plainly: your Opus!Universe fics are some of the best fanworks I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Not just for Mass Effect, in GENERAL. I've only read a couple handfuls of fic over the years where I was sucker punched in the gut by how good they were, and not only did you manage to do it once, you managed to do it FOUR TIMES. The sheer amount of love you have for all your characters, both the ones from the game and your OCs, is so blatantly apparent, and it makes them a joy to read about. They're extremely well-realized and I'm only getting more and more invested in them as the story goes on.
I've been playing the Mass Effect series for two-thirds of my life, since well before game two was released. It is, and will forever be, one of the most important things to me, and every now and then I stumble across a fanwork that reminds me of how I felt playing through it for the first time. I love knowing that something I care about so deeply inspires the same levels of creativity and passion in others that it did for me, in many ways even more so.
Sam, Kaidan, and the 'Yang gang will always have a corner of my Mass-Effect-loving heart now, and I just wanted to say thank you for sharing them with all of us. I hope you are unbelievably proud of what you've written, because you absolutely deserve to be. You've got an ardent fan in me for sure. (I love all the Opus fics, but Cantata's always going to have a special place in my heart. I read it twice within the past month, that's how much of a chokehold it had on me. It's so fantastic)
I am so, so, SO unbelievably excited to read Mezzo. I can't wait to see your take on ME2.
Ahhhhh, thank you so much! What an INCREDIBLE message to wake up to!!!
It's such a privilege to get to write this story and share it, and I am consistently blown away that Sam, Kaidan, and the 'Yang Gang mean so much to others. Sam is this lovable asshole who lives in my head and refuses to leave, and people want to hear about him. That's incredible! Cantata in particular was a fic that I figured would go largely unnoticed - it was too niche, too removed from the main canon events, and too reliant on characters no one knew. It means SO MUCH that it's your favorite.
No fictional world has ever captivated me as utterly and completely as Mass Effect. Having a community of people I can share that love with is so special.
Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to say this. <3

Fandom Questions
Ah! Got tagged by @theoriginalladya - Many thanks! I think I read this at like...some obscene hour in the early morning, passed back out, and promptly forgot about it til just now hahaha
Tagging let's see uhhh... @urdnotflexthejedibard @aleiocus @solstheimtxt @clericofshadows and uhhh @illusivesoul -- only if ya'll want to, of course!
How many works do you have on AO3? 50!
What's your total AO3 words count? 643,168
What fandoms do you write for? That have actually been posted: Mass Effect, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Cyberpunk: 2077, Dragon Age, Fallout 4, The Outer Worlds
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Intangible Things (131) The Paths You Take (125) Biotic Theory (95) No Matter What (92) Stealing for Spite (92)
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I try to! Even just an expression of gratitude, though I'm not averse to rambling hahaha
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Hmm that's probably No Matter What, my in between fic for ME2 and ME3...
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Currently, gotta say Restoration (ME3/Post-ME3, mshepclone x Major Coats)
Do you get hate on fics? Hmm I don't think I'd qualify anything as "hate," but I have had readers express a dislike for a direction I seemed to be going in. Eh, what can ya do?
Do you write smut. If so what kind? I do! Generally not very explicit, and I'm a sucker for fluffy smut specifically. I love lovers being incredibly dorky together, and that includes in the bedroom.
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? Hahahah, yes. Stardew Effect is a crossover of Mass Effect and Stardew Valley that I'm surprised got a lot of positive reception haha
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not to my knowledge
Have you ever had a fic translated? No
Have you ever cowritten a fic before? No. Original works, yes, but that was a while back, and never for fanfics.
What's your all-time favourite ship? I gotta pick ONE!? How about...one per my favorite fandoms...ME: mshenko, ME:A, mreyder, and Cyberpunk: m!V x Kerry
What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? It's not a matter of doubt, it's a matter of getting my muses to be consistent. I'll get to all WIPs in due time, though some may be absorbed into other projects that better suit them
What are your writing strengths? I like to think I'm mechanically and stylistically pretty consistent?
What are your writing weaknesses? Plotting. Outlining. Like long-form, I just can't follow an outline to save my life
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I've had some interjections of other languages (mostly Spanish, since I have some very very basic understanding there), but otherwise I don't think I could get the words to flow right if it wasn't primarily in my native language.
First fandom you wrote for? TECHNICALLY? Tortall. But I was like, 11 and idr what it was even about. More recently, Mass Effect.
Favourite fic you've ever written? Ahh that's hard! Restoration will always have a special place in my heart, but Chasing Storms had some really fun moments too in terms of writing in and of itself

Good news on the Mass Effect Andromeda front: I am finally Figuring Stuff Out™ (Fast travel, learning how to toggle the objectives and realizing THERE’S A MAP have made things soooooo much more fun) and am vibing with the game at last!
Tumblr media
One thing that was kinda stressing me out? Every time the game reminds me THE CHOICES YOU MAKE WILL EFFECT LATER OUTCOMES!!!!!! which triggers this anxiety in me that I’m Doing Things Wrong© and often results in me freezing and not wanting to make any choice because I don’t want to make The Wrong One and not be able to correct it later. 😬
But once I realized I can just play the game again and make different choices, it felt less ominous and universe destroying to potentially make choices I don’t end up liking later in this run. I wish there was a faster way to play through the game, though, but I’m going to definitely replay it on the story/narrative mode where the fighting is minimal. Anyway, I want to play again as Scott and explore some of his options (okay, so I’m probably going to date Cora if she’ll have BroRyder!me, lol) but I’m still weighing my current romantic options as Sara.
I did a bit of research (*points to my anxiety about Doing Things Wrong® which definitely outweighs any Not Wanting To Be Spoiled* 🤷‍♀️😉) to see which optional romance characters I haven’t met yet and that seems to be Jaal and Reyes. Now, I have to say that Jaal seems to be firmly in my character preference wheelhouse (his voice and style of speech reminds me a bit of Vincent from 1987 Beauty and the Beast who I still to this day ADORE with my entire fangirl soul, what can I say? 😍💗), so he’s probably going to be a big contender for Sara’s heart on this playthrough.
However, up until now, I’ve been trying out the flirt options with any character it’s been offered for and, so far, Suvi and Peebee are currently in the running for the title of 💖Love of Sara’s Life💖 However, I was unexpectedly charmed by Vetra’s reaction where she got all tongue-tied and was practically stammering when I asked if she had anybody special in her life. I admit... I found that adorable, considering she’s this big alien warrior woman who looks like she could break me into itty-bitty pieces and then I swear she was blushing at me asking her one simple little question.
Tumblr media
Anyway, here’s Vetra, if you don’t know her.
Tumblr media
Also... Peebee!
Tumblr media
Annnnnd Suvi!
Here, I’ll round out my other potential love interests for Sara...
Tumblr media
Jaal
Tumblr media
annnnd Reyes! (I don’t know much about Reyes yet but he’s giving me some scoundrel vibes and I’m always here for that. 😎)
I mean, honestly? I’d kinda love to playthrough with each of them but that’s a HUGE commitment of time so we’ll have to see how that goes. I definitely want to replay as Sara at least one more time, though, with whoever ends up coming in second place this time around. 😉
Tumblr media
Here’s my girl Sara for reference once more. 😉
I still suck at driving the NOMAD but I feel infinitely better since I’ve had several people tell me that it’s not just me. Also, at least I haven’t caused us to get burned up by radiation or gotten stuck on a big rock in the middle of enemies until we get shot to death again, so... IMPROVEMENT!
Tumblr media
Anyway, for any of my Mass Effect Andromeda peeps out there... who do you typically play as and who do you choose to romance, if you choose anybody? I’d love to hear about your experiences, see how you’ve customized your character, all that fun stuff, if you’d like to share! 😎
That’s it for now. Love you, frens! 🤗🤗🤗

What are some of your favorite games of all time?
This is a great question, more questions about video games, less questions where people make up things I never said and demand I defend those positions, XD
Anyway, here's a short list:
Pathfinder: Kingmaker. The best isometric RPG ever made, in my opinion.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. The best version of one of the best games ever made.
Mass Effect Trilogy. Yeah the third one shit the bed in a lot of ways, but I still enjoy the series as a whole. Playing a game series where your choices carried over from one game to the next was groundbreaking in the 2000s, and I always enjoyed my time with these games. Especially rereleased in the legendary edition.
Resident Evil 2, Original and Remake. My favorite Resident Evil game of all time. Great game, great story, great characters.
Resident Evil 4, original and remake. Second favorite Resident Evil game. Also, my husband's favorite game ever. I love seeing him get excited over it, XD
Suikoden 2. Great gameplay, great story, best game in the series.
Tales of Zesteria. Mikleo my beloved!
Jaws (NES). Yes, it's bad. Yes, it's short. No, I don't care. This was one of the first games I ever owned, and me and my dad used to play it together when I was very little. I have a lot of fond memories of trying to figure out how to beat the game with him. I still remember how excited we were when we started to figure out the gameplay loop for the very first time.
Mortal Kombat 2. The game that introduced me to the series, and still one of my old favorites. I still play and love MK to this day because of it.
Kingdom Hearts, whole series. I can't really pick one game, because they're all both really, really good and really, really bad, XD. But I love the story and the characters, and I've enjoyed each of them in different ways. But if I had to pick just one, I'd probably pick 2.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Still the best Star Wars game ever made. Still one of the best western RPGs ever made. The plot twist is still one of my favorite moments in video game history.
Max Payne 2. Ugh, so good. Great storytelling, fun gameplay. Took everything great about Max Payne 1 and did it better. RIP James McCaffrey.
MegaMan Battle Network, whole series. Probably the best reimagining of a classic IP I've ever seen, from the old days when "reimagined" didn't mean "vandalized". I was several years older than him when the first game came out, but in a lot of ways I grew up with Lan and his friends, and these games will always have a special place in my heart.
Jade Empire. Another great BioWare western RPG. Great setting, good story, unique characters, and really good and unique-for-the-time combat.
Soul Nomad and the World Eaters. I don't even know why I like this game so much, but I do, lol. They should have given the male PC a romance ending with Gig, though >_<
Pokemon Red and Blue. Pure nostalgia entry, but even though there are a lot of boring Gen 1 haters, to be a 10 year old kid when the original US Pokemon craze was at its peak was something special, and the games and the Pokemon will always be cherished in this house. Gen 1 supremacy, noobs!
Batman Arkham Asylum. You have no idea what it was like growing up a Batman fan and a video game fan in the years before Arkham Asylum. Every Batman game was terrible. It was a running joke how no one could do a good Batman game. Hell, half the word of mouth for AA was "did you hear someone's trying to make a good Batman game?" That they got many of the incredible voices from Batman the Animated Series back was even better. RIP Kevin Conroy and Arleen Sorkin. (And fuck Mark Hamill)
Legacy of Kain, whole series. Aside from Metal Gear Solid, this series is the definitive master class on video game storytelling and voice acting. I love the plot, I love the characters, I love everything. I hate how the ball was dropped so hard after Defiance, because that game set up an amazing follow up that just...never happened. It was such a sad fall from grace, because in the early 2000s this was the AAA game series. Everyone loved it. Everyone was desperate for the next game. And then it just kind of fizzled out after a few missteps and developer woes. And it died a quiet death in a proto-live service multiplayer game that no one wanted and even fewer people played. And while the tragedy is appropriate to the Gothic setting, I'm still hoping against hope for a faithful remake of the first games that spurs the original developers to finally finish the series the way it always deserved.
Honorable Mention: Final Fantasy 8. Gonna be honest here, 70% of my love for this game comes from fanfiction, lol. I played the game when I was a kid, and didn't really like it. It was weird and looked bad (I played it long after I'd gotten used to the "modern" graphics of the PS2 generation) and even with a Codebreaker and cheats the final boss was super frustrating. But there's some really great FF8 fanfic out there. Stuff I reread every few years. And it's given me a phantom nostalgia for the game.

419,581

Mass Effect, Star Wars, Top Gun, Call of Duty

It may take me a while but yes, always.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't have fics with an angsty ending.

Probably Chase Your Heart, though The Long Road will also have a happy ending when I finally get around to it.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not so far...
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I sure do! It's usually pretty explicit and mainly with established relationships. I've written one slow burn, I've done my time.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I haven't written any yet but I'm currently working on two Mass Effect x Call of Duty fics, one set in the MWIII timeline, the other in the Mass Effect timeline.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I know of.

Well, my big one is The Long Road, of course, but I really hope to finish that one it's just going very slow (I AM working on it), so probably Brothers.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, probably. And I think I don't do a too shabby job at finding a character's voice, if you know what I mean. Also, I think my smut isn't too bad, either.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions, exposition, PLOTTING
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Ehhh, it strongly depends.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Technically Star Trek TOS but those were just handwritten stories a friend and I swapped/wrote for each other. The first fandom I wrote anything for and shared it online was Mass Effect.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Oh, that's tough. I'm really proud of Chase Your Heart and it's definitely one of my favorites but there are a few others I also like quite a bit, like With A Little Help From Your Friends (Top Gun), Body and Soul (Call of Duty), Hot Mystery Guy, That's What Friends Are For, and April 11, 2194 (all Mass Effect), the latter which will always have a special place in my heart.
Tagging anyone who wants to play! <3

🐺 mickey james. i mean, i think this is a no brainer. she’s so very important to me, i’ve made the most content with her; she is my muse, my little barbie doll. creating mickey is what started me down my vampire: the masquerade obsession. she is an icon and she is the moment.
— NEWEST OC.
🚀 oksana shepard. my newest shepard with my newest mass effect playthrough! usually i would have just replayed chloe, but i wanted to try a new romance route (hey miranda hi) so i made a new shepard to go along with it! she’s currently still suffering for mass effect 2 and is a big believer in owning up to your past mistakes and trying to do better.
— OLDEST OC.
🛡️ poppy mayweather. poppy was my very first dnd character! i created her in 2018, which is when i got “serious” about creating and documenting my ocs. she has such a special place in my heart and i loved playing her. she has so much survivor’s guilt and anger in her little halfling body. her campaign was so fun and such a good introduction into dnd.
— MEANEST OC.
💜 lola darling. after a lot of consideration, i think this has to go to lola. she says what she wants, when she wants to, and doesn’t really care about other people’s feelings. some of it is her using bitchiness to assert her authority, other times she’s just so quick to anger that first come the insults, then the violence.
— SOFTEST OC.
🍊 theodora cohen. theo’s heart feels too large for her chest sometimes. she has so much love in her heart for everyone; it’s the core of who she is and why she wants to help people. sometimes her softness and kindness can be naivety, but in all things her heart is always in the right place.
— DUMBEST OC.
♱ vanessa flair. vanessa dropped out of high school and never had any formal education. her grades were also piss-poor. her attention span is severely lacking, so if she had no interest in her schooling, she did not devote her time and attention to it. she’s dumb in regards to academic smarts, but has great survival instincts otherwise.
— SMARTEST OC.
🩸 delilah hendrix. delilah’s always excelled in her schooling, but she always strove for that excellence and perfection. it’s as much a natural talent as it’s a skill she’s honed and perfected. it’s made her a great asset (and candidate) to clan tremere. she was embraced when she was in the middle of her master’s program for economics.
— OC YOU’D BANG.
🍊 theodora cohen. theo strikes again. she’s so generous and attentive, i know she’d treat me right.
— OC YOU’D BE FRIENDS WITH IRL.
📷 aubrey li-young. i think aubrey, for sure. we have a lot of the same interests! i think we’d have one of those low maintance friendships, where we don’t talk a lot, but we’ll hang out like once a month to catch up and probably play dungeons and dragons. she’d be the kind of friend i could go to for anything and would try to get me out of my comfort zone.

so I've always been a very big fan of Edgar Allen Poe after I was gifted a collection of his poems as a kid to help me get into reading so yknow he has a special place in my heart cause of that. and Mike Flanagan's The Fall of the House of Usher has been fun so far to see his adaptation of so many of Poe's stories kind of taken and unfurled into something new. I know lots of people were all mad cause "oh he didn't stick with the themes exactly the way they're presented" which I can see where they're coming from but I'm also one of those people who has seen Poe's work adapted in so many ways that like I don't mind that he's done a but of his own thing with these tales and overarching story. I see it as framework for frankly some very good horror moments, some killer practical effects, and great acting.
it's paced well and has left me wanting the story as opposed to Bly Manor which I was bored of halfway through every episode. again. while I get some of the complaints I've seen, I personally don't agree. I think this one is a legitimately fun horror series and the stage acting type monologs that people get all bitchy about (that's its own post not gonna go into it here) isn't in it unless with Death which fits. but it felt like he really wanted to write and direct this one like you can feel the enjoyment of Mike Flanagan in this as opposed to Bly Manor which felt like what it was (I'll do it for Netflix if they let me to my own project Midnight Mass).
anyway I'm having fun with it and I don't mind the changes to the stories to fit the framework of what he wanted for the overall story. it's an adaptation and it's interesting

Always There
World: Mass Effect Paring: ShepardxVakarian, previous ShepardxAlenko Words: 2,484 Rating: M for implied sexual situations and swearing Summary: Shepard has to face a tough conversation, but the past does matter and so do the people who were always there for her.
Note: This is my first work in the ME world so be aware that the diaglue isn't going to be spot on, but it is very much so based on the game. Basically, Kaiden accused my female Shep and I was like excuse me, sir? And then needed to write this. Cross posted to AO3 just like the rest of my stuff :)
Always There
She walked through the Presidium Commons seemingly not paying attention. To anyone who didn’t know her, it looked like she was leisurely walking just like everyone else. Shepard never wasn’t paying attention though; she was just really good at hiding it. Her team knew this, as it was likely what kept them all alive through all the shit they had been through. The scorched marks around set her on edge. It made her wonder just how long it was going to take for Cerberus to fuck things up again or the Reapers to show up and make the black marks look like childs play. Such a beautiful place; reduced to nothing in the matter of moments all because of the evil will of evil beings.
She quickly shook the idea from her mind, focusing on the familiar face in front of her. Kaiden had asked to see her the next time they docked and although most of the crew made her smile when they asked to spend time with her, this request set her on edge. The last time they talked about anything other than the war and military shit, he had asked her about Garrus. Part of her felt terrible for just sighing and putting her face in her hands and lamely brushing off the fact she had been with someone else. In all honesty, Kaidens reaction on Horizon had broken her heart. It’s not that she didn’t understand his fear and pain seeing her wearing that stupid Cerberus crest but..  “Commander.”
“Hey, Kaiden. You wanted to see me?”
“Yeah, I just needed a sanity check, I guess.” “Have a lot on your mind?”
He chuckled and played with the bottle in his hand, seemingly lost in thought. “Yeah, I mean other than the end of the galaxy and stuff. I just.. I keep thinking about me and you. We didn’t talk very much in the hospital.”
Shepard sighed and leaned forward in her chair, surprised he brought things up so quickly but glad it was getting over with at least. “Yeah well, I was just happy to see you alive after seeing your head get smashed in.”
“Are you okay with talking about this? I know we aren’t really alone.” “Yeah, I guess now is as good a time as any.” He nodded and sighed. “Look, I get why you cheated but-“
“Kaiden, I don’t want to cut you off, but that entire implication bothers me if I am being honest.”
“Calling it cheating?”
“Yeah. I’m not saying that what we shared wasn’t special. You were very special to me. You still are. But it’s not like when the galaxy was exploding around us, we had time to sit down and talk about what we were or what we weren’t.”
“I guess that is fair. But you were alive for two years and just didn’t get ahold of me?”
“I was on a table! Any time I woke up and powered through the sedatives they just pumped me full of more. They.. they had to rebuild me after I was killed. I know your life continued for two years but the only thing I remember from that time is pain. I remember fear and unfamiliar faces and burning. Stars everything burned when I would wake up.”
Kaiden frowned and reached over, gently putting his hand over hers. She gave him a tight smile and sat back up, pulling away from him. Talking about that time was painful and she didn’t like thinking about it. Too much was riding on her staying in the right frame of mind.
“I’m sorry, Shepard. I mean I saw.. I saw you die. I spent years dealing with the fact that I couldn’t.. couldn’t save you. It took everything in me to get in that shuttle and I blamed myself for you not making it out. Not that I was the only one who blamed me for it. I guess I just got so caught up in my own feelings that I didn’t take yours into account. Do.. do you want to talk about it?”
“No. Thank you, but no. I don’t have time to deal with that stuff if I am being honest. I have enough wounds being made daily; I don’t need to open old ones.”
“I understand. I’m really sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
An awkward silence fell between the two and he kept playing with the glass in his hands. She finally sighed and leaned forward again, looking at him fully.
“When I ran into you on Horizon, I was so happy to see you. When I first woke up, I wasn’t sure who made it out alive on that ship.”
“So, you knew I was alive?”
“I knew when I landed on Horizon that you were there. I had asked the Illusive Man about my old crew. One of the first things I asked him, actually. He told me that you were on special assignment. So when he told me about Horizon and that you were there.. Joker piloted us there immediately.”
“So seeing me alive was-“
“A huge relief.”
They smiled at each other, and she felt her chest tighten.
“Then once I found you.. I worried Garrus the whole way through looking for you. He kept giving me that look he gives me when he knows I’m not okay but also when he knows I won’t entertain the subject.”
“I barely even noticed that he was there. I was just.. I only saw you.”
“Yeah. When I saw you, I was so fucking relieved, Kaiden. I thought you had been taken with the rest of them. Just another person.. another face to haunt my nightmares every night. Another person I lost because I wasn’t fast enough.”
“Hey, hey I’m right here.”
He put his hand over hers again and this time she let it stay.
“I know. But you were so angry with me. And I get it. I understand. The things we saw Cerberus do.. shit. But it was me. And for a moment you were happy to see me but seeing your face fall and the hatred flash through your eyes.. it broke my heart Kaiden.”
“I’m sorry. Shit, wish there was something else I could say. Maybe that will be my catch phrase.”
Shepard chuckled and shook her head.
“No need for you to be sorry. You were hurt and had every right to be. I left right after we talked, I just couldn’t stand being there anymore. Then I got your email and.. you were carrying on with your life. Which, part of me was really happy for you but the other part.. I felt like I lost you all over again just for doing what was right for the galaxy.”
“You were doing the right thing. You always do.”
She chuckled darkly and sat back up straight, tired.
“Yeah, and it always seems to hurt those I care about.”
“So, Garrus?”
She laughed and felt her cheeks flush slightly.
“Yeah. That wasn’t what I expected. Hell, I bet humans 30 years ago would have me tied to a stake for it right?”
Kaiden sat up and laughed, letting some of the tension fall from his body.
“Yeah, probably. You two work well together though.”
“We do. I didn’t even know it was him when I went to find him. Tricked some mercs into hunting Archangel and when I walked up the stairs to recruit him into a suicide mission, there he was. Almost lost him then too.”
“He’s way too tough to be taken down by a single grenade to the face.”
She smiled fully and nodded.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right. He didn’t even question me. Just saw it was really me, after shooting me once to make sure I was real, and just signed on. He was surprised Cerberus was okay with a Turian on the ship but wherever I was going.. he was there.”
Kaiden let his smile fall from his face and sighed.
“I won’t keep saying I’m sorry because I don’t want to piss you off.. but for what it’s worth I am glad that Garrus was there for you when no one else wanted to be.”
“Me too. He’s been one of my biggest supporters from the very beginning. I don’t think I would have made it out of the collector base without him.”
“Well, this wasn’t exactly the way I wanted this conversation to go, but if you’re happy with him then I am happy for you. You deserve the best. You give up everything all the time just to save the rest of our asses. Happy looks good on you, Commander.”
“Thank you, Kaiden. I appreciate it. And thank you for asking me out here. I don’t know that I would have brought all of this up without you doing so.”
“I always have your back, Commander. No matter what. I won’t make the mistake of second guessing you again.”
---
Garrus stood in the elevator smiling to himself wishing someone else was there to banter with. All the stupid shit he said when he was just a naïve c-sec deserter. It was the good times though. But on this particular lift, he was happy to be alone because it meant another opportunity to spend time alone with his favorite human.
Okay, so maybe she was one of the very few humans he truly knew. In many senses of the word.. but she was definitely his favorite. And he didn’t think that would change even if he met every human in the galaxy.
The door opened and he paused when he saw the reporter walking out of Shepards cabin. She paused for a second and looked him up and down. Normally he would appreciate the sentiment, but he had no interest in her. She walked past and into the lift, which he didn’t even bother to turn around to see it shut. He was too busy looking at the woman in front of him.
“Sorry, Shep, I meant to take longer but you sounded-“
“It’s okay. I don’t think there is anyone on the ship that doesn’t know you come up here on occasion.”
He chuckled and walked into her cabin when she motioned for him to. She locked the door behind them and let out a sigh, letting her shoulders slump. Garrus let his smile fade and walked to her, putting his hands on her shoulders. Without her armor, she was even smaller which always threw him off. Humans were so small yet the one in front of him was so fierce.
“Your mind seems heavy, sweetheart.”
“Yeah. Kaiden asked me to meet him on the Citidel.”
“Ah. I assume you hadn’t spoken to him much since the hospital?”
She shook her head no and leaned forward, letting her head rest on the Turians chest. He put his hand on the back of her head, gently moving his fingers to sooth her. It had taken some time to learn each other’s likes and comforts, but now neither of them believed anyone else could be as comforting to them.
“Let’s sit down, yeah?”
She nodded against him and let him lead her to the couch. He sat down and opened his arms, letting her sit next to him and lean into him. She loved how warm he always was and sighed as the heat hit her always sore muscles.
“You never told me much about your talk with him in the hospital, just that he seemed to be better.”
“How would you know there was much to say then?”
“Because I know you. I don’t even need you to have subvocals to know how you’re feeling most of the time.”
She smiled for a moment before sighing.
“Somehow, he knew about you. Maybe it was the crew talking or he saw us talking.”
“I guess it would be hard to hide just how much you love these scars.”
She chuckled and swatted at his chest playfully.
“Not that I would have hidden you from him.”
“Well, after how he treated you on Horizon, I am honestly surprised that he would even mention it.”
“He told me that there was no one else and that I was always the one for him.”
Garrus rumbled, which she thought may have been a laugh, but not being able to hear his subvocals made it hard to tell.
“Funny way of showing it by not only disrespecting you on Horizon then sending you an email that he was on a date with a doctor.”
“Yeah, I told him all of that earlier today. He accused me of cheating on him.”
She felt him tense, so she put her hand on his leg, running her thumb across him as a soothing gesture.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart, I just don’t like him cheapening what we have. I mean, as long as you still want me.”
She turned to look at him and moved her hand to the side of his face, turning him to look at her gently.
“I told him that you weren’t just some fling. That you were there for me no matter. Always riding into hell and being willing to stay there with me or carry me out. I also told him that after how he acted and the fact we never even talked about what we were or might be.. it wasn’t fair.”
“You’re damn right it wasn’t fair. I would defend your honor, but you seem to have it handled yourself.”
“I do. Though the sentiment is nice.”
He hummed against her and pulled so she could climb into his lap, straddling his waist.
“I mean, I could still walk down there and give him a piece of my mind. Maybe fight with him. I’m sure Vega would be happy to see a sparring match in the cargo bay.”
“Hmm, I don’t know. The last time you talk to someone about a sparring match and blowing off steam you ended up in their bed.”
He chuckled and put his hands on her hips, squeezing slightly.
“Worried, dear?”
“I’m not sure. Maybe you just have a thing for humans and anyone that passes by may steal your attention.”
“I know my scars are irresistible, but you, my dear, are even more so.”
She smiled and kissed him gently, resting her forehead against his. They stayed like that, in silence, just enjoying each other’s presence.
“Thank you for telling me about all of that, sweetheart.”
“Thank you for listening.”
“Always. I am a man of many talents after all.”
“Hmm, maybe it’s time for you to show me some more of those talents.” “Am I not memorable enough?”
“I think I just need a reminder.”
He smiled as he stood up, easily picking her up with him.
“Hope you’ve been working on that reach and flexibility.”
“Only with you, Garrus.”
“You’re damn right, Shep.”

So I bought mass effect legendary edition and have been playing the first one, because I used to play it on the Xbox 360 when I was younger, I always interact with the characters on the ship and stuff, and I’m like:
this is how you fucking write characters, they feel like real people, they have personalities.
I fucking love the Mass Effect franchise, and it will always have a special place in my heart

Tumblr media
The early years of the game were full of comfy aircraft like the Vestra that added atmosphere and flavor to the game. Look at that charming little nose and split tail. It was tiny enough to do the Zancudo tunnel run, too.
Tumblr media
After cutting your teeth on the Rogue, the Pyro was what you moved up to when you wanted to make a passenger soil themselves. The copilot couldn't do much other than watch as you turned this supermaneuverable dogfighter into an airborne carnival ride that could beat even a Lazer in a turn fight.
Tumblr media
This Hydra was an aircraft with a very special place in my heart, because I discovered the glitch to remove the missiles entirely on my own, with no forums or tutorials involved. I felt like a million bucks when I logged back in to see those clean wings. It struck me as very fitting, considering I didn't use the Hydra in its usual close air support role and merely used it for cargo runs and the occasional escort.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, the Havok here also had a special place in my heart because I completely and utterly hated it. The only reason it was still in my collection was that I never needed the money from selling it. Seriously, you looked at this thing funny and it would tip over and drag you into a cartoonish death slide before making you question your entire life up to this point. And then they introduced a sale mission with eight, yes, eight of these things! No wonder nobody ran hangar cargo.
Tumblr media
Tiny plane is tiny. The Alpha Z-1 was the plane of choice for buzzing downtown and challenging yourself to fit into ever tighter holes. Seriously, this thing was fast and could turn on a dime, and it even had countermeasures to keep trouble off your tail. The only bad part was that this little bird would turn into an albatross if you were even the slightest bit off the mark when trying to land.
Tumblr media
A Cargobob was another one of those things that every player was all but required to own, whether it was the standard camo flavor or the alternate Cargobob Jetsam like this one. It was indispensable for getting vehicles unstuck and having fun bringing them to places they had no business being at. Even the developers got in on it with the missions that had you airlifting a tank back to your bunker.
Tumblr media
The B-11 Strikeforce was an odd duck. Despite the popularity of its real-life analogue, it took years to show up in the game, and when it finally did, it was in the form of an unusually maneuverable high-altitude dogfighter that couldn't do the one thing its inspiration was famous for. Seriously, the explosive cannon on the B-11 took multiple hits and multiple passes to take out even a person standing completely still as it tossed them around like a beach ball. One of the aces in our crew practically made a game out of seeing how long they could juggle a ground target with a single strafe. All the developers had to do was copy and paste the cannons from the Hydra and Lazer, yet they chose to give their version of one of the most famous aircraft in American history a brand-new bespoke weapon that hit with all the force of a runaway shopping cart.
Tumblr media
The Besra was another one of those planes from the launch era that was flavorful and fun. A nimble stunt plane was always a good time in itself, but what really made the unarmed Besra fun was that it shared the same radar icon as the two very common and very dangerous combat jets. My crew and I strongly condemned attacking any players transporting cargo, but I can't say it wasn't amusing to buzz past them and raise their heart rate a little before they found out it was a harmless Besra.
Tumblr media
The duality of man was exemplified in the Akula stealth helicopter. With potent weapons, good speed and agility, a little bit of armor, four seats, and the ability to go on and off the radar at any time, the Akula was effective in just about every role, which made it popular for sneak attacks in combat zones as well as cargo runs when you just wanted the irate masses to let you grind in peace. Like the Besra, it was also a giggle to take the Akula up to the height limit and turn off its stealth above a crowd of players before watching their radar blips scurry about and circle the wagons. Ain't I a stinker?
Tumblr media
Savage! Just pretend I said that in the voice of the theme of the Amiga game by the same name. The Savage was a fun helicopter from the heists era that managed to be useful in PvP and PvE for quite a while with its explosive cannon and enough armor to disengage. It also served as very painful insight into the developers' priorities. One of the Savage's quirks was that it had a slightly off-center radar lock point, which meant that in rare circumstances a skilled pilot could dodge homing missiles by pitching the helicopter forward. This bug persisted untouched for three entire years until players noticed that it could be used to counter (read: not get instantly steamrolled by) the Oppressor Mk II. Only then did the devs "patch" the Savage, because nothing was allowed to oppose the almighty shitter bike. This sort of backwards balancing is what began to drive my crew and my friends away from the game.

Takes place at the end of Mass Effect 2 as a PR puff piece
Name?
"Miranda Shepard"
Are you single?
 "That's complicated….and personal."
Are you happy?
"Absolutely not. There is a race of ancient entitled bug machines hellbent on our destruction and no one wants to talk about it."
Are you angry?
"Very."
Are your parents still married?
"Did you not hear me about the bugs? And the destruction? Any of it?"
"This is really just a fluff piece meant to improve your public image after rejoining the Alliance, ma'am."
She rolled her eyes, "Ugh, fine. No. They're dead. Is that fluffy enough for you?"
Birth place?
Shepard's eyes narrowed. She slowly replied in a cold tone, "Mindoir."
"Oh."
"Yeah. You didn't do much research before this interview, did you?"
"Not enough, apparently"
Hair color?
"Black."
Eye color?
"Brown."
Birthday?
"April 11, 2154"
Mood?
Shepard smirked, "Chuffed."
"That has multiple…nevermind."
Gender?
"Female."
Summer or winter?
"Summer. You don't get summer on a space ship. The warmth of a sun is something special. Really any of the seasons are novel after a certain amount of time in space."
Morning or afternoon?
"Morning."
=EIGHT THINGS ABOUT YOUR LOVE LIFE=
Are you in love?
"Maybe."
Do you believe in love at first sight?
"No. But my parents did."
Who ended your last relationship?
"Whoever blew up my ship. Being dead is a real strain on a relationship. And then coming back from the dead doesn't really help matters."
Have you ever broken someone’s heart?
"Yes." "You want to elaborate on that?"
"I got resuscitated by a rogue organization with mixed motivations. Led to some hurt feelings. I didn't handle it well either."
Are you afraid of commitments?
"I'm afraid of letting people down. That's not quite the same thing."
Have you hugged someone within the last week?
"No…Wait. Does spooning count?"
Have you ever had a secret admirer?
"I got quite a bit of fan mail after I first became a Specter. A good portion of it was anonymous."
Have you ever broken your own heart?
"Not on purpose."
=SIX CHOICES=
Love or lust?
"Love."
Lemonade or iced tea?
"Hot tea."
Cats or dogs?
"Fish." A few best friends or many regular friends?
"Few best friends. I don't have time to keep up lengthy correspondence unfortunately. The friends I have are few and far between, but fiercely loyal wonderful people."
Wild night out or romantic night in?
"Night in. I have enough chaos as it is. I take the chances to slow down when they come."
Day or night?
"Day."
=FOUR HAVE YOU EVERS=
Been caught sneaking out?
"No."
Fallen down/up the stairs?
"Once or twice."
Wanted something/someone so badly it hurt?
"Yes."
"Want to elaborate?"
"No."
Wanted to disappear?
"No. But I've wanted the Reapers to disappear. A much easier solution to the danger they pose to life as we know it."
=FOUR PREFERENCES=
Smile or eyes?
"Eyes. Windows to the soul, right?"
Shorter or taller?
"Taller. Although that's not hard in my case."
Intelligence or attraction?
"Intelligence."
Hook-up or relationship?
"…Something in between."
=FAMILY=
Do you and your family get along?
"Dead. Remember?"
"What about your team? Do you consider them family?"
"You don't save the galaxy twice and not get close to a few people. And no, we don't always get along. But we always make up…mostly"
Would you say you have a “messed up life”?
"I want you to think about that one for a moment."
Have you ever run away from home?
"I was forced to."
Have you ever gotten kicked out?
"Of almost every council meeting I've ever been in, sure."
=FRIENDS=
Do you secretly hate one of your friends?
"I secretly hate these questions"
"That's not a secret."
"Well not now."
Do you consider all of your friends good friends?
"The best."
Who is your best friend?
"Garrus Vakarian."
Who knows everything about you?
"No one. What a ridiculous question? Does someone know everything about you?"
"Well-"
"Every single thought and feeling no mattter how inane? Every moment of every day? Every miniscule freckle and scratch and ingrown hair? Ludicrous."
"I guess it is."
"Are we done here?"
"You can go, Commander. Thank you for your time."

Mass effect opinion:
I find andromeda more enjoyable to replay than mass effect 1. I played the series years before andromeda dropped. I was part of the group who didn't play it for a while because it was rushed by the studio and the animations had to be altered.
But I feel like the companions got far more focus than 1 allowed. The crew around the ship are also fleshed out characters with us only having a limited group so it feels like Ryder knows everyone.
I love the decision to make the ryders twins that you alter the appearance of. Also the fact that they're younger than Sheppard and scientists rather than soldiers was a good choice because it made it clear that they weren't Sheppard from the start. They feel distinctly like their own people. Alec Ryder being an N7 meant the Ryders in game were dealing with living in the shadow of someone on the level of Sheppard and that is a fantastic story beat.
The constant companion banter when riding in the nomad, the comedic companion side quests where characters interact with Ryder through the whole thing and even the secondary companion gets some lines in to make them feel more present, and even just running around felt so much easier.
I love Sheppard, and I'm always going to love mass effect 1 for what it presents and the world it builds. But Andromeda holds a special place in my heart and I'm always going to mourn the choice to abandon it by Bioware since it seems as though we're never getting a sequel.
