the star only rises at nightfall 💫 : dissecting my kotlc playlist

1. stay awake by skott

“i need it to hurt, need it to burn, need it to burn. once, we had a dream. we once had a dream. this dream was all that i could see.”

despite how pretty this song is, it’s for the neverseen. i think the lyrics above in particular suit fintan, although it honestly matches anyone in the neverseen. they’re unhinged and see their vision as the be all end all - a dream that’s all they can see.

2. set myself on fire by taeyeon

“i'll warm up your cold heart; i'm gonna set myself on fire.”

tbh, i chose this song for the title and the chorus (“even if i smile brighter, i’m still sad.”) and the general vibes of the song, but i think the line above really suits the self sacrificing vibe that sophie and her friends have for each other - it doesn’t have to be just the romantic pairings - they all love each other.

3. gilded lily by cults

“but with my double vision, how was i supposed to see the way? haven’t i given enough?”

this one’s pretty self explanatory, i think. the song fits all of the main characters, from sophie and keefe and fitz to mr. forkle and oralie and grady. also, this line reminds me of keefe especially - “always the fool with the slowest heart.”

4. astronomical by svrcina

“there’s something inside of me i can’t fight. forces of gravity taking me, taking me. weightlessness forsaking me, this pull is astronomical. can anybody stop me?”

this was one of the first artists i associated with kotlc when i first started reading the series. it was only natural that they released a song that suited sophie’s drive and endless desire to change the lost cities for the better.

5. winterfall by dpr ian

“now, i get what you mean when it hurts you. now, i get what you mean when you want to feel. oh, i get it. no, i get it. [...] you’re the only one who made me feel like something.”

keefe sencen, y’all. could apply to his feelings for sophie or the way his mom just continues to use him with no regard for his personal being.

6. running by trafton

“truth is, i’ve been wishing in your name right from the start. twice a day, and lately on a star. i know you’ve been running, running, running, running, running from yourself.”

this one’s keefe again (can you tell he’s my favorite character?) but maybe a little more from an outsider point of view, watching him cope with what’s thrown at him. also suits early sophie struggling to accept whether the black swan was good or not, or whether a band of murderers made her.

7. a place you’ve been by trafton

“nothing, like that won't get me started up again. my homeland, a place you've been.”

grady and edaline towards brant. the ultimate - and best written betrayal.

8. gone by trafton

“but you're gone and i'm lost. come tell me i'm wrong and please don't be gone.”

when everyone thought they lost alden in exile. the black swan when they did lose prentice. mr. forkle to his brother.

9. dead flowers by rivals

“i see the world in a new light. dead flowers in my hair - i finally don’t care! i’ve embraced the rain and i’m happy now.”

an edaline anthem if i’ve ever heard it. that moment where she overcomes her grief. also suits: biana, della, sophie, and wylie

10. don’t let me sleep by stella jones + trafton

“don’t let me sleep. i know what it means: my dreams will all come true - i’ll wake up without you.”

neverseen keefe and sophie type beat anyone?

11. half by pvris

keefe, sophie: “some days, i feel everything. others are numbing.” fitz, linh: “can never find the in between - it’s all or nothing.” dex, biana, tam: “i never never never said i wanted. never wanted to be here now.”

i fully believe this song can relate to anyone in kotlc, depending on the verse.

12. bubble by lennon stella

“up high in my bubble i’m floating. [...] i climb into my bubble; it can’t be broken.”

that one scene on the nightfall cover with linh, sophie, and keefe. but also sophie emotionally breaking down and seeking out that safe place.

13. supernova by rivals

“these stars are clusters. a waste of time that i won’t miss.”

sandor never misses. the song, though, reminds me of the elves waking up to how broken their society really is.

14. brainstorm by alexander 23

“how bad’s the weather in your head? wish you could stay with me instead.”

such a sokefe song. i can practically picture that scene where keefe bends down to see how sophie is doing after the forkle twin reveal.

fitz vacker, y’all.

“if i could only turn back time, i would bring us back to life. if i could only change your mind, we’d stay young and never die.”

forkle to his twin. oralie to kenric. grady and edaline to jolie. and maybe even jolie to brant.

“oh, all that i did to try to undo it. all of my pain and all your excuses. i was a kid but i wasn’t clueless (someone who loves you wouldn’t do this!) all of my past, i tried to erase it. but now i see, would i even change it. might share a face and share a last name but (we are not the same!).”

i don’t even need to put the lyrics here for y’all to know this is about keefe and the sencens and tam and linh and the songs.

18. hall of fame by the script

gethen lol. but also an ode to the moonlark’s power.

“meet me at the bottom of the ocean where time is frozen - where all the universe is open.”

but also the vibes are v mysterious and suit the black swan in the early keeper books sonically (the black swan is not in love) ((this is actually bc i wrote a sokeefe fic inspired by this song))

“there’s so many wars we fought. there’s so many things we’re not. but with what we have, i promise you that we’re marchin’ on.”

21. human by of monsters and men

“when the words weight heavy on the heart, i am lost and led only by the stars.”

lightleaping by the forbidden stars. also a song from when i first started reading the series.

22. elephant ears by unlike pluto

“say your thoughts when you think i won’t hear, but nothing gets by these elephant ears.”

23. wolves without teeth by of monsters and men

“oh, you’re feeding on my energy, i’m letting go of it - she wants it.”

a little like the push and pull of the water to linh, or how enhancing an ability would feel.

24. blue by taeyeon

“you’re my blue - just like always.”

ik the color is green for kotlc and grieving, but blue is in honor of someone close to the singer who passed away, so i thought the song was fitting. especially since all elves have blue eyes, it was another connection.

25. lifted by birdy

“won’t you lead the way through my darker days? keep them softly spoken.”

26. you’re the sea by andrew belle

“each time we leave, i think about it. what if we don’t come back? if all of this is chasing the wind, why is my head like that? am i to believe? am i to admit? that you’re the sea.”

keefe to sophie, for the latter lyrics, but also just the general fear they all face every time they have a near death experience.

“can’t control my thoughts when i’m out of my mind. it’s lonely but it’s art. i guess i’ll be fine.”

that scene where kenric dies. idk if the tower was actually purple but i’ve been picturing it to be purple, and they claim that everblaze smells different from other fires.

kotlc yt au hc bc i want to write but cant *actually* write so its the next best thing

biana makes historical versions of famous costumes (disney, barbie, you name it) shes basically the cosplay queen. she did a lot of stitching by hand before her accident which cost her her arm, so now she mostly does it with a machine (look, amputee!biana is in every single on of my human aus). her videos are very chaotic bc shes mostly just making it up as she goes, but in the end, she gives a proofed step by step how to for the dress/coat/wtv. since shes so rich, all of her paterns are free as well. she has around 3m subscribers. she does charity streams.

dex is a maker. he does reproductions of weapons he likes from video game, movies, animes you name it. he has an ongoing series called “will i finally manage to make a lightsaber this year ?” it comes out every year in july, and is one of hs most viewed videos. he also works to make his own patinas and experiment with different kinds of finnish for his pieces. he took a year off off youtube at one point to learn how to make jewellery, and now hes back with a store, and some custom rings ! he has around 1.5m subs, but some of his videos can get as many as 10m views. he never monetizes his videos.

fitz is a baking youtuber, in theory. the first few years on his channels were basically just baking tutorials without voiceover. but he did one live strem for 100k and the fans were absolutely shook at his voice and face, and he just never could go back to anonimity. how did he get that many subs ? well, all of his videos had the fuck ups included, and step by step guides on how to fix these mistakes. also the editing job was flawless. now he does baking experiments, and some cakes on request. he has a few monetized videos, but only with small companies that really need advertizing, or ridiculous products. (hes been known for doing a video sponsored by chin workout equipent) he has around 3m subscribers as well.

keefe is the random guy. he does art challenges, and trends, and just videos that seem pulled out of nowhere (”i set up a fake shower in the middle of the street lol”) he takes part in drama, as in he watches from the sidelines, then makes a shitty edit summarising the whole thing. hes never pretended to eb serious, and the people watching him know hes not. hes released one song on spotify that is just a compilation of everytime katherin bennett said urinoirs in That Video. hes fairly unproblematic though, and everytime he sets up soemthing crazy like the bathroom stall, he finds a way (legal or not) to let anyone that might need it use it. he has arund 6m subs, and definitely does big charity dnations

linh and marella are gamers. they dont have the same channel, but their content is fairly similar, even though their approch to it is wildly different. marella always tries to follow the rules so much she creates chaos, and linh generally gets distracted by side quests for a whole episode. theyre mostly known for their extremely different DBH gameplays, with marella ending up with the bad ending somehow, even though she mostly followed the good storyline, and linh killing way too many people unnessessarily by panicking. they both have around 5m subs

tam and sophie both are editors. theyre the ones that make the videos. sophie works with biana keefe and fitz while tam works with linha and dex. marella has jensi. theyre the ones that get the crew together.

linh and marella decide to do a collab, but jensi cant edit marellas half, since he has to leave for college or wtv, so sophie, who watches a lot of tams side videos (conspiracy theories) sends him an email being like “hi, i heard you needed an editor, and i dont sleep ever and editing keeps my mind off things i dont wanna think ab, so im here if you need me. oh and btw, links to the channels im the editor of”

since sophie is a vv good editor, tam answers like “oh yeah thatd be great heres my number !” and now theyre chatting, both for work and just as friends.

then comes the actual collab

its nothing special, ut its a fan fave, both linah and arella win a ton of subs from it

then fitz, one night, is like “oh, btw, do you know anyone who lives near **** bc im looking for a roommate” and sophie is like “yeah i gotchu, y cous dex lives nearby, and hed appreciate a bit of help for the rent so ill hook u up”

anyways, theres a small “wait youre THAT sophie ????” from tam, but it doesnt matter, fitz and dex move in together.

soph and biana are long suffering parents looking at their children who have a crush on each other, without realizing they also are the children who have a crush on each other.

marella and linh get together quite easily, comparing to the rest

they simply did a qna; and one of the questions was like “are you dating ???” and marella is like “nah, i wish” and linhs like “id be down”. and thats it.

dex and fitz egt together after an accidental kiss

sophie and biana are tipical oblivious wlws, and start dating after a kiss to piss off homophobes (its in character dont @ me)

no one knows wtf keefe and tam are. they dont know if they are dating, or hate eachother, or have the bromance of the century. its confusing to everyone and they like it that way.

kotlc headcanons sexuality and gender edition because y’all didnt ask

sophie

I headcanon them as agender with they/he. they went through that not like other girls phase but never ended up being a girl. Also Dex cut their hair. And they are a bisexual mess too

keefe

genderfluid and queer. Me? projecting? Nooooo… But anyway zir a pronoun hoarder (I hope I’m using that right) and basically said “fuck around and find out” and never found out

Fitz

either gay or aro or both, also cis. His dad is pretty homophobic so he’s a bit repressed but hes doing his best

dex

he/they demiboy. also aspec and mlm. Can’t say where on the ace spectrum or if he likes girls thats all I know. his parents are really supportive but he’s still scared to come out.

Biana

lesbian queen, and shes a cis girl but she likes to fuck around with gender a little and uses she/her and spark/sparkle pronouns

Tam

he’s very gay gay homosexual also a trans boy, he’s binary but like Biana he likes to fuck around with gender and uses he/ghost pronouns.

QUIRKS

sophie :

switchblade :

an incredibly powerful quirk allowing her to switch between 5 quirks she absorbed. shes unable to absorb a new quirk unless her system is entirely reinitialized during a near death experience. her current quirks are Telepathy, Enhancement, Teleport, All Speak, and Infliction.

biana :

flicker :

she is able to make herself invidible to the human eye for any period of time. she however still shows up on cameras and other radars. overall a classic invisibility quirk

fitz :

mindmelt :

a form of telepath, able to read and form thoughts in the head of others as if they were his own. hes able to "posses" someone for a very short period of time if they are close enough for him to look them un the eyes.

keefe :

moodswing

similarily to fitz, he is capable of reading and forming emotions in others, although he described forming emotions as extremely taxing. he needs to be feeling that emotion to project it onto someone. he much prefers simply emplifying already present emotions.

dex :

artificer :

he is able to communicate with technology to an advanced level, and only needs a thought to enter a line of code in a programm. overall, a very good suport quirk, although it would be hard to use in battle

tam :

ombrelle :

a classical shadow manipultion quirk, although he has proven able to pull shadows from thin air, witch had rarely been seen before. his technic is extremely similar to a water manipulation one.

linh :

flood :

an extremely powerful water manipulation quirk. she has shown capable of manipulating enourmous bodies of water with little to no training. she reports that she feels as if water is talking to her, and often uses this to detect people in a 1 kilometer radius.

marella :

pyromaniac :

what appears to be a classical fire manipulation quirk, but is in reality an air temperature manipulation quirk. she is able to heat the air up until the point where if theres even the slightest bit of dust it will catch fire. she is able to direct it by using air currents.

HERO NAMES

sophie is moonlark for obvious reasons

tam is Styx

linh is Oceanus

marella is Phlegethon

the three of them go together as they intend to be a team of heroes

their names are three of the 6 rivers of hell btw

Cyclothymia for keefe bc it means mood swings (i think)

Discord for fitz (it makes sense ill explain later)

and Anonymous for dex

AS HEROES

so i loed, this is just as much Superpowered and HCP as it is My Hero and UA

so the progress rhey make with their powers, and how they are as heroes :

dex is a subtelty major, which means his job is basically to be a super spy.

he is both a hacker, and a field guy, his job is to act and get informztion by any means necessaries.

he also created some very specific elements for heroes armors

biana, even though all of her teachers tried to get her to pick subtelty as a major, is in Weapons.

ever since the attack in which she got her scars, she is dead focused on leanring to use dzrts as her main weapon.

she is very good at it too, and her techer is honeslty impressed, because with her invisibility plus hiw small the darts are, she is basically unavoidable

also she now knows how to make herself invisible to camera, and radars

fitz is a control major

he had choice between focus and control, but sticked with control

(basically, the difference is that control is for others, and focus is for you)

what he does is hes able to possess people way more rapidly, and switches between them in fight to cause discord and basically make the guys punch themselves in the face.

he still needs eye contact to read minds though.

sophie masters her 5 quirks, she is a focus major

marella is a ranged combay major, bc that made sense for her

both linh and tam are close combat majors, because their powers are kinda similar

they developp a very specific combat style that relies heavily on being in sync, but since thisis the hcp overkill trainig, they also are extremely good just on their own

marella is also nicely in sync with them

while tzm isnt a weapons major, he took it secon and thrid year, and he uses a modified umbrella

it makes sense bc 1) gives him easy shadows 2) protectd him from his sosters water

keefe is a control major, and he is a support hero, surprisingly enough. he helps his temmates by giv8ng them all the endurance and bravery they need and incapacitates his enemies by multiplying their deepest fears
