Asianet is an Indian pay television channel which broadcasts mainly Malayalam-language television series. Headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala,[1] the channel is part of Asianet Communications, owned by Star India. It was the first privately-owned Malayalam-language channel in the country.

History[edit]

The channel was launched in 1993 with a broadcast of only three hours per day, with the rest of the Tie showing selective programs from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and CNBC. By late-1994, the channel increased its broadcast time to 12 hours per day and later to round-the-clock broadcasting. Asianet was the first private TV channel of India to do 'live' news broadcasting from its Subic Bay uplink centre. In early-1995, the uplink was shifted to Singapore where it attained full operational status. With a change in the broadcasting policies of the Government of India, Asianet started an uplink from Chennai through VSNL. From 15 July 2002, Asianet had its own earth station at the Asianet Studio Complex in Puliyarakonam, Thiruvananthapuram.

Its headquarters were located in Chennai. Its first owners were Raji and Sashi Kumar Menon. Asianet Communications's majority share was later bought by Jupiter Media and Entertainment Venture, owned by Anoop Sree Ayroor. In 2008, Star India purchased the majority of shares in Asianet Communications.[2][3] In 2013, Star completely acquired the channel.

Asianet is a general entertainment channel with programmes in a wide variety of genres including Malayalam-language movies, soaps, reality shows, talk shows, news programmes, travel shows and music-based shows. While programming is mainly targeted at family audiences, there are several programmes aimed towards specific audiences such as shows for children, teenagers, young working professionals and elders.The channel also broadcast a successful musical talent reality show - Idea Star Singer.The channel also hosts and broadcasts the Asianet Film Awards and Asianet TV Awards.

Asianet is an Indian pay TV channel operated by Asianet Star Communications, wholly owned by Star India, in the Malayalam language. The canal's headquarters are located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

The channel was originally promoted by Sasha Kumar with seed money provided by Reggie Menon in the early 1990s. In late 2006, Reggie Menon left Asianet Communications in part, transferring control to Rajiv Chandrasekhar (Jupiter Entertainment Ventures).

Star India bought 51% of Asianet Communications and formed a joint venture with JEV in November 2008. Star India acquired 100% of Asianet Communications in March 2014.

Asianet Communications was the first Malayalam entertainment broadcaster. It was promoted by Sashi Kumar with start-up capital provided by Reggie Menon. Kumar was the former head of the Indian Television Press Trust, and his relative Menon was a businessman from Moscow.

When Asianet faced the financial crisis, real estate firm Rahejas was given 50% of the cable company. The channels were still owned by Sasha Kumar (50% of the shares) and Reggie Menon (50% of the shares).

Later, Rahejas also wanted to participate in operations on the channel. While Kumar resisted Rahejas' overtures, Menon negotiated a deal with them, and as part of that deal, Rahejas gained full control of the cable company. Menon used what Rahejas had paid him to provide Kumar with a golden handshake.

The Zee Group's attempt to acquire Asianet from Menon subsequently failed. This was apparently due to the breaking agreement with the cable company prohibiting the takeover of the channel by a company interested in cable business.

It is a common practice for Tamil films to be remade into other languages owing to the unique content the industry produces every year. But there have also been several Tamil films that were remade from Hindi films. And mind you, these are not some low-budget movies that we are talking about. Films as iconic as ‘Annamalai’ to ‘Dharala Prabhu’ are Tamil remakes of Hindi films and they did great at the box office.

02/6’Annaamalai’ – 1992

Superstar Rajinikanth’s action drama ‘Annaamalai’, which was directed by Suresh Krissna, was a remake of the 1987 Hindi film ‘Khudgarz’. The story of the film is about two best friends who, despite coming from varied backgrounds, turn opponents because of an unexpected twist. ‘Annaamalai’ features Rajinikanth, Kushboo and Sarath Babu in lead roles with Radha Ravi, Nizhalgal Ravi and Manorama in supporting roles.

03/6’Osthi’ – 2011

‘Osthi’, the action comedy film, which was directed by S. Dharani, features Simbu and Richa Gangopadhyay in lead roles. The film was a remake of Salman Khan’s 2010 blockbuster Hindi film ‘Dabangg’, but it failed to do magical numbers at the box office like the original version. Simbu played the role of a stylish cop ‘Osthi’ Velan, while Sonu Sood played the antagonist in the film.

04/6’Nanban’ – 2012

‘Nanban’ was a remake of Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 ‘Idiots’, and the film was directed by the remarkable director Shankar. This was the first remake film of director Shankar, and he made it in Tamil since he wished to watch a whole new Tamil version of it instead of a dubbed one. ‘Nanban’ features a huge cast that includes Vijay, Jiiva, Srikanth, Ileana D’Cruz, Sathyan and Sathyaraj in main roles. The music of the film was scored by Harris Jayaraj.

05/6’Nerkonda Paarvai’ – 2019

‘Nerkonda Paarvai’ was a remake of the Hindi film ‘Pink’, which features Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. Ajith played the lead role in the remake version, and he delivered a good performance as the lawyer Bharath Subramaniam. Apart from Ajith, Shraddha Srinath, Abhirami Venkatachalam, and Andrea Tariang were seen in the other main roles, and the film was directed by H Vinoth. The film was produced by Boney Kapoor, and it marked the popular Bollywood producer’s first production in Tamil.

06/6’Dharala Prabhu’ – 2020

The romantic comedy film ‘Dharala Prabhu’ was the remake of the 2012 Hindi film ‘Vicky Donor’. The film, which was directed by Krishna Marimuthu features Harish Kalyan, Vivek and Tanya Hope in lead roles, and it opened with positive reviews from critics. The story of the film is about an energetic young man Prabhu, who accepts to donate his sperm after being approached by a fertility doctor and makes quick money. But he is unaware of how this decision will affect his future.

Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikecei (English: The King of Torture, Pulikecei the 23rd) is a 2006 Indian Tamil language historical–comedy film written and directed by Chimbu Deven. The film stars Vadivelu in his debut as a lead actor. Monica and Tejashree play the female leads, while Manorama, Nassar, Ilavarasu, Sreeman and Nagesh play supporting roles. Sabesh-Murali composed the soundtrack album and background score. S. Shankar produced and distributed the film under his production banner S Pictures.

Popular Tamil actor Suriya made his debut in cinema with the film ‘Nerukku Ner’, and the actor has developed himself into one of the top stars in the industry. The actor has tried different types of roles with his films and delivered blockbuster hits. But Suriya’s best films were the ones where he played dual roles, and he has surprisingly quite a few films that fit the criterion. Also, the actor is reportedly playing a dual role in his next film ‘Aruvaa’ as well which is directed by Hari. We take a look at Suriya’s films from ‘Perazhagan’ to ‘Massu Engira Masilamani’, where he rocked dual roles.

02/7‘Perazhagan’ – 2004

Suriya played the dual role for the first time in the film ‘Perazhagan’, and he played the roles of Chinna and Karthik. He had also won the Filmfare award for Best Actor for his performance in the film. Suriya and Jyothika both played dual roles in the film with Vivek, Manorama and Manobala in supporting roles. The film directed by Sasi Shanker was remade from the 2002 Malayalam film ‘Kunjikoonan’, and the music of the film was scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

03/7‘Vel’ – 2007

Suriya played the roles of twin brothers Vasu and Vel, who split up at birth and are raised in different families. One becomes an officer, while the other becomes an influential man. Asin played the female lead in the film while Kalabhavan Mani played the role of an antagonist. The rural entertainer was directed by Hari, and it marked the director’s second collaboration with Suriya after the film ‘Aaru’.

04/7‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ – 2008

The story of ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ is about an NSG officer who is in the process of rescuing someone after the news of his father’s disappearance. He begins to recall the bond he shared with his father and the stories associated with him. Suriya had played a dual role as a father and son for the first time. Suriya displayed different age looks for these roles, and the film, which was directed by Gautham Menon emerged as the biggest blockbuster of Suriya.

05/7‘7aum Arivu’ – 2011

Suriya played dual roles as a circus artist and as the Buddhist monk named Bodhidharma in the 2011 released Tamil film ‘7aum Arivu’. The film directed by AR Murgadoss revolves around a biological war between two of the most populous nations on earth. Suriya and Shruti Haasan played the lead roles in the film while Johnny Tri Nguyen was the main antagonist. Also, this was one of the several films selected by the SIFCC as an Indian submission for the Oscars under the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film category.

06/7‘Maattrraan’ – 2012

After doing several dual roles, Suriya opted to play as conjoined twins in ‘Maattrraan’, which was directed by KV Anand. The story of ‘Maattrraan’ is about a pair of twins trying to save their father’s prosperous career from a Russian spy. However, shortly before the spy is killed, they come across a shocking revelation that may change their lives forever. Along with Suriya, Kajal Aggarwal played the lead role with Sachin Khedekar in the antagonist’s role.

07/7‘Massu Engira Masilamani’ – 2015

Suriya played the dual role as a father and son again in ‘Massu Engira Masilamani’, which was directed by Venkat Prabhu, as a criminal Maasu, and as an intelligence officer Shakthivel. The film received mixed reviews from the audience. ‘Massu Engira Masilamani’ was simultaneously released in Telugu as ‘Rakshasudu’, and later remade in Bengali as ‘Naqaab’.
