Your phone tightened in your grip and you withheld your sigh of disappointment. You had this night planned for weeks, but your friend was calling to cancel merely an hour before you were set to pick them up.
“No worries, take care.” You hid your disappointment behind a smile as you finished up the call. Your boyfriend, Buck immediately sensed something was wrong.
“Everything okay?” Even from the kitchen, he could hear the slight variations in your tone that was hiding your crushed excitement.
You sighed, kicking off your shoes. “Tonight just got cancelled.”
“But you’ve been looking forward to this for weeks? And you spent so much time getting those tickets and choosing an outfit.”
You pulled the throw pillow onto your lap as you sat on the couch, picking at a loose thread, remembering all of the nights looking through ticket websites and multiple weekends spent combing through thrift stores in L.A.
“I’ll go with you.” Buck offered, the sadness you were emitting was simply too much for your sweet boyfriend to bare. It didn’t matter to him that musicals were not his thing and he would have to sit through two, or that he had just gotten off shift and was simply exhausted. The only thing that mattered to him right now was your happiness.
“Really?”
“It’ll be fun.” It sounded like he was trying to convince himself just as much as you.
“So it’s a musical about paternity?”
“It follows Sophie, she is getting married and trying to decipher which of the three men her mom had written about in her diary is her real father.”
“How does Abba fit into all this?”
“If you’re looking for the logic or correlation between Abba and the story, you won’t find any except that some of the group were the creators of the musical.”
“Does she find out who her real father is?”
“You’ll have to wait and see, babe.”
Buck continued to scroll through the Wikipedia page. “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again?”
“The second film. It takes place a few years later, dynamics have changed and Cher is in it.”
The popcorn bucket rested on your lap, your fingers idly reaching in for the next popped kernal thoughout the film. Buck had also been indulging in the buttery goodness but it had been a moment since his fingers brushed yours in the bucket. You pull your eyes off the screen expecting to find him asleep but found the opposite, his eyes were glued to the screen as Meryl Streep sang Slipping Through My Fingers. You swore you could see his tears glistening in his eyes at the beautiful song.
The second film began and Buck quickly questioned the absence of Meryl Streep just as everyone did the first time it had been watched. He would whisper in your ear as quiet as possible for explanations on small continuity errors but you assured him none would effect the storyline much. You could feel Buck squeeze your hand just a little bit tighter as Sky returned to Kalokairi, and he was sniffling along with the rest of the Theatre during the christening scene.
“So what did you think?” You asked as the lights turned on while the credits rolled.
“I can definitely see why these are your comfort movies.”
“Thank you for coming with me, Evan.” You leaned your head on his shoulder, cuddling into him as much as possible with the chairs cupholders between you.
“Anytime.”
Buck didn’t regret volunteering at all despite how his tiredness from shift weighed on him. The theatre was packed with fans who were just as enthusiastic as you and he adored watching you glow each time you received a compliment on your well planned outfit. Maybe, just maybe he enjoyed the movies too.
You think you can definitely hear him humming S.O.S in the kitchen the next morning.

Okay so the escapism might be hitting a little too hard and I have been brain rotting about the plot of something that quite literally came to me in a dream (@curiousthyme and @emilielfc thank you so much for indulging me). sophie's younger siblings, adelia and theodore were bursting with excitement. purely because their older sister's boyfriend, misha collins, was joining them for this year's summer vacation they took every year. the vacation was to the same grecian island, skopelos. even though misha and sophie had been dating since before adelia and theodore were born, the younger brother and sister of sophie didn't know anything different. adelia, now seven and theodore now five, this was the first time misha was able to join the family due to his job as an actor and how he was finally able to take a break for the summer. and instead of going back to boston to visit his mom and siblings, he decided he couldn't stop putting off the family vacation to greece. plus, he always loved watching sophie dance and sing her heart out to the mamma mia soundtracks, most especially when she did the lay all your love on me dance on the grecian beach. i mean, sophie was named after sophie sheridan from the movie mamma mia so, it just felt right for her to do this every summer when she was in greece. now, she was able to do the songs properly now that misha was with her.
"...look how excited delia and theo are, mish, it's adorable!" sophie whispered to her boyfriend
misha turned his head up from responding to some last-minute texts and his heart melted at the sight in front of him
"aw, that really is adorable!" misha cooed as he ignored the texts on his phone a bit longer just to see the seven-year-old adelia and five-year-old theodore get overly excited about this summer's greece trip
"thank you so much for coming with us, mish! my family are really excited and appreciative!" sophie whispered as the couple cuddled in the car
the parents of sophie, adelia and theodore drove the six of them to the austin airport so they could catch their flight to greece. the flight from austin, texas to skopelos, greece is thirteen hours and five minutes. so, a great deal of time which was something that both sophie and misha did not like. both misha and sophie were not easy fliers but quite nervous fliers. but, it was helpful that sophie and misha were both tired enough from a less than five hour sleep the night before that they quite easily fell asleep. sophie staying asleep for almost the full thirteen hours, waking up with ten minutes left of the flight left. whereas misha slept for around twelve hours after little adelia woke him up because she got scared due to the sudden arrival of turbulence. another reason why sophie was grateful to have misha with him, he was absolutely perfect with adelia and theodore. so, misha easily comforted and eased adelia's fear whilst theodore stayed curled up in-between misha and sophie asleep.
finally, the family plus misha were now in skopelos, greece, where the original mamma mia movie in 2008 was filmed. the excitement was real because misha was now able to finally understand and appreciate the love and spiritual connection that his girlfriend, sophie, had to not only the island but the movies of mamma mia and mammia mia two: here we go again! and he loved the fact that sophie's love for skopelos was so real and strong. it warmed his heart to see sophie get excited the moment she stepped foot off the plane and onto the island.
also, seeing the way sophie's two younger siblings, adelia and theodore also shared the same excitement of being back on the island also made misha's heart sing. the family were now on a boat just cruising around the island's waters when adelia and theodore were in the perfect place for a photo. misha taking the photo, he thought it was the best photo ever and, sophie seemed to agree as she quietly hummed the lyrics of dancing queen by abba.
then, misha and sophie decided that they would just sit at the front of the boat and cuddle. that was when the older brother of sophie, adelia and theodore, who lived in skopelos, took a photo of the couple. and, let's just say, that alongside the photo that misha took of adelia and theodore, were two of the very few photos that were printed from their skopelos vacation 2019.

If You See The Wonder Of A Fairy Tale
Finally saw Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again. It's wonderful
The thing about Mamma Mia is that if you go in knowing what you’re getting, you’re going to come out completely satisfied. This is a bizarre fantasy world, situated somewhere between musical theater and karaoke where famous beautiful people hang out on a Greek island singing Abba songs.
It’s neither complicated, nor is it particularly great, but it’s deeply entertaining and delightful.
