“Cassiel...why did you ever come back?” Dante asked acidly, as he doted over Meande, brushing her bangs aside to place a damp cloth on her forehead, thankfully he had caught her as she was falling. Cassiel sighed, wringing the scarf in her hands, eyes cast to the floor.

    “I already told you, I had no choice. Do you think I just love hurting my daughter?” She asked rhetorically before looking back up. “I had a premonition that she’s in danger. A demon is looking for her. I don’t know why, I just saw her in his possession.” Vergil cleared his throat, causing Cassiel to turn her attention to him.

    “Why aren’t you dead?” He inquired in true Vergil fashion, causing her to let out an indignant grunt.

    “How is this any of your business, Vergil?” He blinked slowly at her, his face not hiding the little bit of surprise he felt at her calling him by name.

    “Cassiel fought alongside our father against Mundus, she knows our family well.” Dante explained, almost feeling Vergil’s surprise, as he stood to his full height, turning to face them both.

    “I was trying to protect Meande in Fortuna, after seeing those demons, I knew nothing good was happening at that place. I felt it had something to do with Sparda, and I was scared they would sense me. I tried explaining to Malcolm that she and I were demons too and we  needed to leave. Her father was a devoted worshipper of your father, once he knew that I helped Sparda, he thought Sanctus could use us. Meande fought back, I was just...frozen, and then in swooped Dante to her rescue.” Dante sighed, folding his arms over his chest.

I was against it at first, and I have a sneaking suspicion you used your psionic powers to manipulate me, but I eventually agreed to it.” He turned, a soft smile tugging at his lips. “I’m glad you did now, though.” Cassiel made note of how softly he was looking at her daughter, before looking back to Vergil.

    “He looked like the demon Maltheal, but it’s hard to say.” Dante turned back to Cassiel, eyebrow quirked.

    “Maltheal was an upper level commander in Mundus’ army.” Dante and Cassiel both eyed Vergil, confused on how he had that kind of information at his disposal.

    “You...know him?” Cassiel asked, and Vergil pulled out of his memories, focusing on their confused faces and he shook his head.

    “In name only...Mundus referred to him during my...stint in the Underworld.” He offered, vaguely, causing Cassiel to give him a suspicious look.

    “Dante…” Meande’s soft voice called out to him, and he turned, quickly kneeling beside her and taking her outstretched hand, placing her knuckles against his lips.

    “I’m right here, babycakes.” He assured her, removing the cloth from her forehead, before brushing her cheek with the back of his hand. Cassiel watched this interaction with curious narrowed eyes, how intimately he touched her daughter, how his face held so much concern for her and how Meande’s face lit up upon seeing him. Cassiel chewed on her inner cheek, folding her arms over her chest, this was an interesting turn of events that she, ironically, didn’t see coming.

    “Hey babe,” Meande purred, head still foggy from her fainting spell, but soon she remembered her mother was back from the dead, and she bolted upright, holding her head in protest from the sudden movement. “What the fuck?!” Meande hissed, giving her mother a hateful look, which took Cassiel aback at first, although she knew that shouldn’t have shocked her.

    “I was trying to protect you-”

    “Protect me? Was this before or after you froze up when my father was trying to choke the life outta me?”

    “Meande…” The tone in Dante’s voice let Meande know she was about to learn something awful, she steeled herself, removing her hand from his, and he and her mother explained to her what had happened that day.

    “So...you knew about her being alive all this time?” Meande asked, voice eerily calm in comparison to her enraged eyes, the golden tones looking more like molten gold than warm honey.

    “I was protecting you, and my feelings for you were never part of her idea, they're real.” He explained quickly, but Meande growled deeply in her throat, a purple glow started to seep into her eyes.

    “Meande, stay calm.” Vergil warned and her eyes slid to him quickly, before looking back to her two betrayers.

    “Meande, please-”

    “Shut up!” She snarled at her mother, standing abruptly, looking back to Vergil, nodding her head at him. “Guess it’s my turn to thank you. You’ve been the only one in this room honest with me.” With that, she turned and walked towards the door.

    “Squirt, don’t go!” Dante pleaded, going after her, but Cassiel took his arm, stopping him.

    “Let her go, Dante.” Vergil suggested. “She loves you, she’ll return.” Dante growled, snatching his arm from Cassiel, pacing several times before turning on her.

    “Thanks, Cassiel. Really.” His tone dripped with so much sarcasm as he kicked the couch Meande had just been laying on. “If I’d have known there was even the slightest chance you’d come back, I could have prepared for this!”

    “You’re in love with my daughter.” She stated, matter-of-factly, causing Dante to give her a sarcastic look that read as ‘you don’t say'.

    “Yeah, and I just asked her to marry me and she said yes. So, lemme just say it again, thanks.”

    “She loves you, like Vergil said, she’ll be back and she’ll forgive you. She just needs to cool off.”

    “She shouldn’t.” Vergil interjected, disappointed in their lying to Meande, and his disapproving face did nothing to make Cassiel feel any better for her poor decisions. “But, that aside, you are a psionic using demon, correct?” Cassiel nodded and he hummed in thought. “I believe Meande tapped into her powers to bring us back from the Underworld.” He mused, looking to Dante. 

    “I can’t render portals.” Cassiel stated, and Vergil rolled his eyes, looking back to her.

    “Just because you cannot, doesn’t mean she can’t. Your abilities won’t be equal, obviously.” He pointed out in a superior tone, and she gave him a mocking look.

    “You must be fun at parties.” She stated, and he frowned at her.

    “I hate parties.”

    Nero watched Meande as she messed with Nico’s jukebox in the back of the van as he sat in the passenger seat. She hadn’t explained to him why she teleported to him, but he noticed an abnormal amount of aggression from her, that put him in the mind of himself. He looked to the phone, picking it up and dialing Dante’s office, it rang a few times before Vergil finally answered.

    “Hey, uh, I found something that belongs to Dante.” He tried to say as quietly as he could, turning in his seat to face the side window. Meande’s eyes cut to the back of his head and she sighed, flopping down onto the couch, her elbows on her knees, her face in her hands. Hadn’t she just envied Nero last night for getting to have a second chance with his father? Didn’t she just get Dante back after pining for him for months on end? She wanted to be mad at him for keeping something like this from her. She felt like she deserved to be mad at the both of them...but she already missed Dante, and she cursed at herself for it.

    Meande had come to terms with what she had thought she’d done, knew her place in the world, thought she knew everything about Dante...now she feels she may know Vergil better.

    “Do ya love him?” Nico’s southern twang brought her out of her lamentations, the curly haired woman stood in front of her, taking a drag from her cigarette, Meande hadn't heard her return from the bathroom.

    “Huh?” Meande asked, dumbly, as Nico plopped down beside her, smiling.

    “Dante. Do ya love him?” Meande’s eyes scanned Nico’s freckled face, wondering where this could be going, before she rolled her eyes in frustration.

    “Yes, I love that big dork.” Nico chuckled, bumping her elbow against Meande’s. 

    “‘Cause that man sure loves you. It’s obvious how stupidly caught up in you he is. I dunno what’s going on, or what he did, but...he did it for you, hun.” Meande wasn’t used to Nico wanting to talk about feelings, this whole group was ass backwards when it came to talking things out, yet her words, no matter how simple, struck a chord in her.

    “Cassiel is alive?” Nero shouted, causing both girls to jump, Nico grabbing Meande’s wrist to keep her grounded. Nero turned all the way around, and Meande gave him a tight smile and a shrug. “That explains the boorish aggression.” He commented, which earned him a throw pillow to the face, but Meande knew he understood the surprise and was well aware that they were now going to be on their way back to Dante’s shop.

Imperius again reminds me why I hate him so much. He can't even stop talking long enough to stop Diablo from destroying the Crystal Arch. Then he decides to throw the Black Soulstone out of Heaven and expects it to not be a problem. This is how we end up with Angels destroying Westmarch ironically. Oh well, at least the Sliver is amusing to talk with.

All of which could've been avoided by annihilating Sanctuary after the Sin War, had the majority of the Angiris Council not forgotten where their priorities should've been. Not to mention that Imperius would've been completely justified in letting Maltheal damn humanity along with all of demonkind, considering it was the fault of the nephalem that Diablo was made the Prime Evil.

I’d say their priorities were kept on perfectly straight, since the High Heavens are devoted to good and are not a nation with simple borders, but a representation of light and goodness and should always reflect that. He would not have been justified because there are millions of souls who had nothing to do with the Nephalem’s actions that would have been murdered. Even so, the argument that the nephalem were responsible is short sighted and deliberately narrow, much like how Imperius is, since he cannot look beyond his wrath, which is a vice, not a virtue.
