Let you down (USWNT x Young!Reader)
This one was inspired by a song by a rap artist by the name of NF. Obviously I don’t own any part of the song in anyway shape or form.
Tumblr media
This one deals with Anxiety and Sadness and just overall not great emotions but it does have a happy ending. Also has squint and you’ll miss it Mal x reader. Mal is also younger to help fit the plot. Hope you enjoy. All mistakes are mine, Not edited.
“Feels like we're on the edge right now
I wish that I could say I'm proud
I'm sorry that I let you down
I let you down….”
“Please don't come after me
I just wanna be alone right now, I don't really wanna think at all
Go ahead, just drink it off
Both know you're gonna call tomorrow like nothing's wrong
Ain't that what you always do?
I feel like every time I talk to you
You're in an awful mood
What else can I offer you?
There's nothing left right now, I gave it all to you…”
Suddenly my earbud was ripped out of my ear cutting off the song i was listening to. “Hey! What the hell Mallory? I was listening to that!” I said angrily as I grabbed my earbud back from her and turned to walk away.
“Okay, woah, chill out dude I was just gonna ask you if you wanted to join the girls and I for lunch after practice…” She said pointing at the girl’s behind her who were watching us curiously. I sighed quietly, pinching the bridge of my nose in frustration, mostly at myself realizing I overreacted.
“No thank you. I’m sorry I snapped at you. Shouldn’t have.” I said softly before shoving my earbud back in my ear, walking away to the other side of the field, picking up a ball on the way and absentmindedly juggling it.
“What’s her deal?” Rose asked, face scrunched in confusion.
“No idea, all i did was take the earbud out of her ear to ask if she wanted to go to lunch with us and she snapped at me. She said no, which is fine but somethings wrong, I can tell.” Mal said
“that’s not like her at all, should I try and talk to her?” Christen asked popping up out of nowhere.
“You might be the right person to do that, not totally certain she seems pretty upset about something.” Mal said shrugging slightly
“I’ll give it my best shot.”
For the second time in 5 minutes my earbud was taken out of my ear cutting off the depressing music blasting out of it.
“Okay seriously, Mal if you don’t get away from me in the next 10 seconds I swear…” I trailed off as I turned to face who I thought was Mal but turned out to be Christen. “Oh s-sorry Chris I thought you were Mal. What’s up?”
“That’s okay, although your reaction when you thought I was her is a little concerning… Everything okay? Did she do something to upset you?”
“No, no, i’m sorry. She didn’t do anything, not really anyways, I’m just irritable right now.”
“What’s going on?”
“I’m just really lost in my head I guess.” I shrugged absentmindedly as I sat on the bench and changed into my slides.
“Lost in your head about what, love?” Chris asked as she moved to sit next to me, resting her hand on my knee.
“It’s nothing, it’s stupid Pressy don’t worry about it.” I said, shooting up and jogging away.
“Something is definitely up with that kid. Time to gather the vets and do some gentle prodding.”
I quietly made my way onto the bus and went all the way to that back, curling up into a seat turning to face the window so my teammates knew to leave me alone. My phone dinged and I already knew I wasn’t going to like what I read.
“You think you’re some big shot now that you made it to the national team? You know it’ll only be a matter of time before you crash and burn. Come home before you embarrass me on national television.”
It was a text from my father. He’d never been the most supportive of my dreams and my current career. These last few days however he’s been more… aggressive with his words. I don’t know why or what I did but he’s been telling me I’ll only be an embarrassment to him and my step mother. That he doesn’t need his friends asking questions when I inevitably fail. His words not mine. I haven’t told the girls anything about what he’s saying because i don’t want them to do something rash, like get on a plane and fly over and beat his ass which is something they’re not above doing. I let out a quiet sigh shoving my phone in my bag before closing my eyes and attempting to sleep.
Team Veteran’s POVs//
“Okay what’s with the kid?” Alex asked staring at our youngest teammate in concern
“She’s 18, you know?” Mal said cutting into our conversation. Megan shot her a sharp look and she went back to watching ATLA (pls tell me y'all know what that acronym stands for…) eating her mandatory after practice goldfish and drinking a juice box Tobin gave her.
“Doesn’t matter she’s still the youngest on this team so by default she’s still a kid to us.”
“That’s lame.”
“Mallory…”
“What?”
“First of all, you just turned 19 like 2 seconds ago so you’re also still a kid and secondly don’t eavesdrop on other people’s conversations, it’s rude.”
“I wasn’t eavesdropping, you guys are all sitting together in front of me, it’s kind of hard not to hear what you’re saying.”
“Just put your earbuds in and pay attention to your show please.”
“Chris come on, she’s my best friend I- ”
“Mallory Diane do as I say please.”
“Okay jeeze, no need to use my government name.” She said rolling her eyes at me. I pinched the bridge of my nose and breathed in deeply to stop myself from correcting her.
“As you were saying?”
“Well she’s just acting odd, when was the last time she was like this?”
“I can’t even remember it’s been a long time.”
“What should we do?” Kelley asked reaching over into Mal’s bag of goldfish, taking a healthy handful, much to her dismay.
“Hey!” Mal slapped her hand hard enough for it to echo throughout the bus, causing everyone to look over at us in surprise, Kelley jerked her hand away, holding it like she’d been shot.
“Mallory Pugh! We do not hit people. Say you’re sorry right now.”
“Sorry Kel. I should’ve just used my words. Please don’t take my goldfish.” She said quietly.
“Thanks squirt, I accept your apology. I’m sorry too, I should’ve asked first.”
“lt’s okay, I accept your apology.”
“Good job using your words babe.” I said ruffling her hair slightly.
Once we were sure Mal was settled again we went back to our previous discussion.
“I say we just let her come to us when she’s ready, you know how she is when people push too hard.”
“I agree.”
“Usually I would agree but they way she snapped at Mal earlier tells me she’s about half a step away from either actually hitting someone or putting a hole in the wall.”
“That’s a little dramatic don’t you think?”
“When has she ever snapped at Mal, Ali?”
“Good point.”
“We still haven’t answered the question of what we’re going to do though.”
“I say we just be straight forward and honest, let her know we’re worried and that we’d like to talk to her and see if she’ll open up and tell us what’s going on.”
“Won’t that send her running for the hills?”
“Not if we don’t give her the opportunity to run.” Alex said getting a mischievous look in her eye.
“Oh no, I know that look, what do you have up your sleeve Al?”
“You’ll see” She said leaning over and whispering whatever it was she was thinking to Becky, who hummed in agreement.
After another hour we finally made it back to the hotel, got roommate assignments and got settled for the night. All the veterans on the team hung back after everyone else had left to go to bed, leaving just Alex, Tobin, Christen, Ali, Julie, Becky, Crystal, Kelley, And Alyssa in the Lobby.
“Okay Cap what’s the plan?” Tobin asked.
“The plan is we’re all going to Alex and Kelley’s room, to wait for the kid. We gave Mal a note to leave on her bed and told her to go hang out in someone else’s room so when she’s not there, she’ll have to go looking for her, and when she passes by the room we’ll grab her and lock her in with us until we get some answers about what’s going on.” Becky said, as we all huddled together and talked in hushed tones.
“So we’re kidnapping her?”
“Not kidnapping… more like, trapping out of love and concern.”
“Right… it still sounds a lot like kidnapping to me.”
“Just follow our lead.”
“Whatever you say, cap.”
We all went up to the room and waited anxiously to see if our plan would work. It only took about 10 minutes to receive our answer. A quiet knock on the door startled almost everyone in the room.
“I got it” Alex said getting up and padding over to the door.
“Hey little Lamb what’s up?” We heard her say.
“Uh… have you seen Mal anywhere?”
“No, I haven’t why?”
“It’s just we’re rooming together and she always waits for me to come up before she goes anywhere.”
“Hmm, I don’t know kid, sorry.”
“Oh okay, that’s okay, i’ll get out of your hair sorry to bother you.”
“You didn’t bother me it’s no problem.”
“Goodni-” She began to say but it was cut off when Alex quite literally grabbed her and yanked her inside, the force of which sent her stumbling forward into the room falling slightly. Alex quickly closed the door and locked it while she wasn’t looking.
“Alex, what the hell is wrong with you?”
“Hey, language.”
It was then that the young striker turned to look at who said that and saw all of us sitting on the beds.
“What the…? What is this?”
“An intervention… of sorts.” Julie said quietly.
“Intervention? For what?” She said her eyes going as wide as saucers
“For why you’re acting so weird lately.” Tobin said standing up, and crossing her arms, trying to intimidate our young teammate just slightly.
“I am not acting weird.” She said defensively.
“Yes you are.”
“No I’m not!”
“Really? Then why did you snap at Mal and technically christen today?”
“I was just irritated.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know, why do you guys care so much?”
“Because we’re supposed to look after you.” Christen said, raising an eyebrow when all she got in return was an eye roll. After a beat of silence she sighed loudly and sat down on the floor, hanging her head in defeat.
“Are you…okay?” Kelley asked as we all looked around at each other, unsure of what to say or do.
“I don’t know.” She said lifting up her head and rubbing her face tiredly. She took her phone out of her pocket, and after a moment threw it on the bed, and said “Read it”
We each took turns quietly reading the text conversation between her and her father, and after each person read it there was a noticeable shift in the room. Everyone was angry for her.
“Who talks to a child like that? Much less their own child?” Megan said beginning to pace around the room, angrily.
“I’ll kill him.”
“I’ll break his kneecaps.”
“You don’t need his approval you know that, right?”
“I just feel like I’ve let him down.” She said quietly, looking anywhere but at us.
“That’s not true. I won’t lie and say that he’s going to change his mind one day and say that what you’re doing is good enough for him but you don’t need validation from him, or anyone for that matter. All that matters is how you feel about yourself and the things that you do.” Ali said sitting down next to her and wrapping her arm around her, letting her lay her head on her shoulder.
“I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do now. I mean I know that what he said wasn’t cool, but i do still rely on him for stuff and at the end of the day I still have to go home at the end of camp.” she sighed.
“What could you possibly rely on him for?” Kelley scoffed
“Oh I don’t know, maybe, food, a roof over my head, things like that.” She said sarcastically.
“You don’t need him for that, you have us.”
“Oh right, like one of you is gonna want ME as a roommate.”
We all looked around at each other and a few of us shrugged.
“Why not? If you want, you can be me and kelley’s roomie.” Alex said smiling softly at the young striker who looked back at her with lots of skepticism.
“Or you could ask Mal if she’s looking to room with anyone.” Tobin said wiggling her eyebrows.
“You guys would really do that for me?” She asked, voice breaking just slightly.
“Of course we would kid.”
“Why?”
“Because that’s what family does.” Christen said, walking over to our youngest teammate and giving her a hand up.
“Group hug!” Tobin said as we all smushed together. The hug was brief however as we were interrupted by rapid knocking on the door.
“Okay, okay hold your horse’s I’m coming” Crystal said quickly yanking the door open, startling whoever was on the other side.
“Is Y/N here?” We heard Mal ask.
“Yeah, she is, you wanna come in?” Crystal stepped to the side to let the youngins into the room, mainly Mal, Rose, Sonnett, Trinity, Tierna, Sophia, Ashley Sanchez and Sam Mewis.
“We were wondering if-”
“Wait what’s wrong?” Sam asked, taking in Y/N’s tired and still slightly sad expression.
“Nothing Sammy, they just finished cheering me up actually.”
“Cheering you up about what? Are you okay?” Mal asked, stepping forward and wrapping her in a tight hug.
“Yeah I’m okay. My dad’s just being a little tough on me right now, that’s all.”
Ali scoffed, “I think he’s being a little more than tough on you, love. He’s being a jackass, and you don’t deserve it.”
“Wait, what did we miss? Come on, we never get to know what’s going on!” Trinity whined.
Y/N decided to show the new comers to the room, what they had missed and much like before everyone was visibly and vocally angry on behalf of our teammate all beginning to talk over one another, only stopping when Y/N loudly called out to them.
“Guys, guys, it’s okay. I don’t need you all conspiring to commit murder on my behalf, okay? It’s not necessary. I’ve already decided to take Alex and Kelley up on their offer to be their roommate.”
“Really? That’s great! We’ll get all the details sorted out before the end of camp.” Alex said wrapping her arms around her in a bear hug.
“Fine, is there anything else we can do for you then? Anything.” Mal asked.
“Movie night?”
“Anything for you.”
After everyone was changed and comfortable, everyone piled on and around the 2 beds in the room, Alex caught on to the fact that Mal and Y/N were laying together, with Y/N in between Mal’s legs, laying on her chest. She quietly nudged Julie who was the closest to them and she quickly took out her phone and snapped a picture, discreetly sending it to everyone but the 2 lovebirds.
“Awww! That’s so CUTE!” Rose said loudly, Sam quick to cover her mouth and shush her, Mal and Y/N looking at her in confusion.
“What’s so cute Rose?” Mal asked.
“Uh- nothing, nothing just a picture of Sam’s dog she just showed me.” She said nervously. Sam elbowed Rose in the ribs as she smiled sweetly at them.
“Oh yeah, just uh, it’s just a picture of Fin from the first bath he took.” She said nervously.
“Oh let me see!” Y/N said enthusiastically.
Sam quickly pulled up a picture to show her and mal and they both gushed over it quietly.
After a lot of debate and only a little bit of yelling, it was decided we would watch Monster’s inc. A Pixar classic.
While we weren’t sure how well the next few weeks would go for our youngest teammate, we all vowed to do whatever it took to show her that we would always be there for her, and that we would be the family that she had always been looking for.

THE END
This ending was awkward, and i overall don’t really like how this turned out. But hopefully it was decent.

What could’ve been (USWNT)
Jessica, caped as the next big thing, is in the form of her life going into her first ever world cup. The twenty-one year old is scoring every time she plays. However, during the USWNT send off game against Wales everything changes.
*This font is used to represent commentators speaking*
We’re playing Wales today, in our send off game before the world cup. I’m really excited because it’s my first major tournament and i feel so confident in my ability right now. I’m playing freely and with a smile on my face, that’s the reason i’m in good form. I don’t want this to end. I want to keep improving week after week, game after game.
Before the match, each of our names were called out individually and we walked to the pitch, i just gave the fans a small wave whereas Trinity danced and Sonnett done Sonnett things.
Me and Mal have such a good connection both on the pitch and off. Shes my big sister so when she got injured it hurt everyone. Shes here today watching, which is nice.
I started the game in a forward line of Sophia and Alex. I took up the spot on the left hand side. Usually i play as a number 9, but like both Soph and Trin I am able to play out wide too. I’m also wearing Mal’s number for the world cup, to have her with us despite her not physically being there.
The first half of the game absolutely flew by. There were no clear cut chances for either side. The game was pretty limited in chances as the middle of the field was packed with players, so the majority of the game was played there.
To start the second half Trinity came on for Alex. I let her go down the middle for a change as I was enjoying myself on the left.
We kept pushing for an opener and after many attempts we finally broke the deadlock in the 76th minute. Trinity scored and Soph got the assist. As soon as the ball hit the back of the net Trinity peeled away towards the fans and I ran up behind her, jumping on her back as the rest of the girls came and hugged her.
“Sophia Smith, you are incredible.” I said as i walked back with the Portland Thorns forward.
“Stop hyping me up.” She said while chuckling. She then playfully pushed me away and then once we all returned to our half the game restarted.
At this point we were in total control of the game. Everything was going perfectly. Key word: WAS.
As the 80th minute hit, Lindsey played a ball over the top of the Wales defence, which i ran onto. I went to cut inside so i could shoot on my right foot, but just as i changed direction i felt excruciating pain in my right knee which caused me to fall to the ground in tears.
“This isn’t good for the US. After losing Mal they won’t want to lose Jessica, too.”
“This looks really bad, Alex. The youngster is clearly in a large amount of pain and her teammates look very worried. Lindsey immediately signed towards the trainers.”
I gripped my right knee with my hand as i sat, crying due to the pain. I wasn’t alone for long at all as Soph came and sat beside me, resting her hand on my arm, trying to comfort me even in the slightest. She didn’t speak to me, she knew i didn’t want to speak so she didn’t. I love that about her, she doesn’t push, she just knows what to do always. She is my best friend.
As i was laying in tears i heard Lindsey screaming for the trainers who were over in an instance. A few of my teammates came over, giving me their support but a few struggled to watch and turned away at the sight of me crying.
“I need you to sit up.” The first trainer said to me, but i didn’t move nor did i even look at her. Instead i lifted my shirt up over my face and lay there.
“Jess…” Soph whispered as she pulled my jersey from my face.
“I can’t.” I said weakly.
“You’ve done your ACL.” The other medic told me and my heart broke. My dream was crushed, right in front of my eyes.
“Jess..” Soph began to speak but i stopped her by giving her a small smile. One which she understood as she knew i didn’t want her sympathy, not on the pitch anyway.
“How do you know?” I heard Soph ask one of the trainers, trying to remain hopeful but there was no hope.
“I’ve seen this before, plenty of times. I saw the way she went down, it’s clear. Obviously a scan will reveal the extent of it, but it’s definitely an ACL.” The trainer told Soph who sighed.
I didn’t speak nor did i look at anyone. I stared into the sky, tears continuing to roll down my face as i was lifted onto a stretcher and taken off the field and into the locker room.
“Look, based on the reactions of her teammates, i’m going to assume Jessica’s injury is not a good one and she may very well miss the world cup.”
“It’s a real shame. The whole world was excited to see her shine on a world stage. Shes one for the future, that won’t change. She’s got so much talent which won’t just go away. She’ll come back stronger. She’s a phenomenal athlete. Her teammates will be devastated for her, they were all so happy for her.”
No one’s pov
Sophia informed all of her teammates and the coaching staff of Jessica’s ACL injury and in that moment everyone’s hearts broke. Mal, who was sitting with the team immediately got up and walked down the tunnel.
Straight after the restart Trinity pounced on a mistake from the opposition and what she done was so moving. She ran towards the camera and stood, making a J with her fingers and kissing it. She then held up nine fingers. Her celebration clearly dedicated towards Jessica.
End of pov
I was sitting in the locker room, well i was given a brace which dosent let me bend my knee as well as crutches, for now. I was sitting down, my back against the wall when the door opened. I expected to see a trainer come through but when i saw Mal i felt so relieved. She sat down beside me and placed an arm over my shoulder. She kissed the top of my head and then i rested my head on her shoulder.
“I know you don’t want to talk about it, so i won’t ask.” She said and i gave her a thankful smile.
“However i do have one question. We’re both out of the world cup. Do you want to travel with the team to watch? Vlatko asked me, before the game, if i wanted to. I wasn’t sure but i figured now we could both go.” She asked me and i smiled, for the first time since going down injured. I’m so lucky to be surrounded by such amazing people who just radiate nothing but happiness.
“Yeah. I would like that, a lot.” I said.
“I’ll let Vlatko know.” She said and i felt her move.
“No. Stay. Don’t go.” I begged.
“I’m not going anywhere.” She promised.
“What is the score?” I asked softly.
“Two - nil. Trin scored, dedicated her goal to you. She he,d up the number nine, for you and then made the letter J with her fingers.” I love my teammates so much.
“Nine isn’t my number. It’s your number. My number is nineteen.” I said, shrugging slightly.
“Not today it wasn’t.” Mal said back.
“Only because you weren’t playing.” I said and Mal chuckled knowing she wasn’t going to win this.
~
The game did eventually finish and as you would expect everyone gives me their sympathy in the locker room, as expected. I received strong support and encouragement from every single member of the team, from the players right to the staff. That is something i am very thankful for.
Thanks to them, i know that this setback will only make me stronger. I know i’ll come back better than ever before and more ready than ever, too.
I know both the national team and my club, in DC, will support me all the way. I know the fans will stick by me and i know my teammates will too. Luckily for me i have both Trinity and Sanchez to annoy in DC, which will help me a lot.
I guess now the world cup is a question of, what could’ve been…

Note
could you imagine that press release?
"Mal Pugh will not be travelling to New Zealand due to personal medical decisions that makes her ineligible to travel"
or "yeah she's an anti-vaxxer, the reasonable Kiwi government is being reasonable and not letting her in the country, our bad for not mandating vaccines for our players 🙃"
Lol, that would be hilarious.

The Knight and Her Princess (Mal x Reader)
Tumblr media
Request: Mal x Reader. Someone continues to flirt with R so jealous Mal is showing and everyone teases her about it and R is so oblivious to the person flirting with R?
Author’s Note: @literaryhedgehog and I took some liberties with this one. We set it in a midevil time, and had a lot of fun working together. I hope you enjoy the first little step into helping me unblock my writers block.
“Remind me again why I can’t kill them?” Mal huffed, crossing her arms and glaring at Dansby, her adoptive brother. He was standing too close to you, looking at you with the same expression he did to many a maiden who ended up in his bed chambers.
“Because it would be treason to kill the crown prince?” Lindsey shrugged, smirking just a bit at the princesses’ predicament. “Also fratricide is generally frowned upon in modern society.”
Mal rolled her eyes. “Are you going to bring up the Romans again? 100 years ago some men walked around and stabbed each other in the back and wore no clothes, very barbaric, I get it.”
“Closer to 500 years ago, dear,” Lindsey corrected, sipping her wine. “And I think you might be deflecting a bit.”
“I am not. Y/n is free to whisper with whomever she pleases. As long as she saves a dance for me,” Mal grumbled, her eye nearly twitched when Dansby leaned in to say something directly in your ear.
“Whatever you say, but I think you should just talk to her,” Lindsey smiled and bobbed a curtsy. Mal watched her as she crossed the room, the hem of her ball gown floating over the floor as she made her way over to some of the other ladies in your household. You saw Emily look up and move to stand with her, their heads bent towards one another to be heard over the orchestra.
Perhaps Lindsey was right. It wouldn’t hurt to join the conversation between you and the prince…
******
“Excellent jousting today, really,” Dansby said, twirling a ring absentmindedly around a finger as he smiled at you. “You really know how to handle a stick.”
“My father and brothers taught me how to joust when I was young. It’s always been one of my favorite activities,” You shrugged, taking a sip of your cider. It was tart, but you were grateful it was even being served. At a formal event like this one there weren’t enough children around for drinks with such low alcohol contents to be necessary. But you liked feeling in control. Not being allowed your weapons made you nervous, adding strong wine or ale to the mix would just make your jumpiness that much worse.
Dansby chuckled, but you felt more like he was laughing at you than with you. “You’re a funny one, maybe I should take you from the princesses’ detail and add you to mine. Might help lighten the mood at some of our negotiations,”
“You have Julie, and she’s the best of any of us,” you said, proud of your friend. Julie was one of the most impressive female guards you had ever trained with. Even Captain Vladko had to work to hold his own against her. And her kicking the ass of anyone who went against her in the melee tournament today was truly a joy to watch. “Plus I like protecting Mal.”
“What about Mal?” The princess in question asked, wrapping an arm around your waist and effectively inserting herself into the conversation.
You took another sip of your drink, hopefully hiding the heat in your cheeks at the touch. Ladies were affectionate with each other all the time, you reminded yourself, no one would think Mal meant anything by it.
“Your guard is very loyal,” Dansby said, turning to his younger sister with a bemused smile. “No matter the positions or other favors I suggested, she is determined to remain part of your retinue.”
Mal smiled thinly at him. “Yes I’m sure those positions of yours sounded very enticing. However, if I were you I would find some lady to dance with in the next few seconds, because I think mother is making her way over with an eligible countess. Best look busy.”
“It appears you’re right,” Dansby peered over your shoulder and adjusted his sleeve. “If you ladies will please excuse me. And Mal, don’t have too much fun without me,” He said, sending the princess a knowing wink before heading towards the dance floor. She wouldn’t intervene in one of his conquests for just anybody. He would consider the message received, loud and clear. You were off limits.
Mal unfolded a fan, and waved it gently in front of her face. “So, what were you talking about?”
You shrugged, trying not to stare at the curl of hair that was dancing around her cheek as the fan sent air its way. “The tournament mainly. He was impressed with my score at the joust.” Your hand twitched at the place on your belt where your sword would normally hang. “I wish I scored lower. Then I could be working this ball instead of attending it.”
Mal pulled you closer to her, so she could rest her chin on your shoulder and speak directly in your ear. “But you wouldn’t get to dance with me,”
“Now that would be a travesty,” You hummed.
Mal just smirked at your tone. “Wouldn’t it?”
“May I have this dance m’lady?” You bowed low and held out a hand in front of you. Mal tucked her fan into her pocket and took it, letting you lead her onto the dance floor.
The music swelled around you and and the lights dimmed as the orchestra began the ‘romantic’ portion of its set. It felt like you were in a fairytale, as you pulled the princess to your chest and began to sway. The people around you seemed to fade, leaving just the two of you to twirl in peace for a moment. To just be with each other in the way you so deeply craved.
Mal sighed, leaning closer to you so you could hear her speak softly over the music. “I hate that we can’t tell anyone we’re attached sometimes. I understand why you would get moved to a different position, it being a potential conflict of interest and all, but watching men flirt with you kills me every time.”
“I know darling. It kills me too, especially when your mother starts talking about suitors,” You said, trying to keep the bitter note out of your voice, but Mal heard it anyway.
“I had a talk with her and my father. She promised she wouldn’t do that anymore,” Mal shrugged. “Well to me anyway. She still wants my brother to work on an heir and a spare. Father can’t wait until you join our family line, and he can hold your jousting skills over everyone.”
“That’s wonderful,” you said, twirling her around and back to face you. “Though I don’t feel much like royalty material sometimes.”
“Well Dansby obviously thought you were, the way he was flirting with you just now,” Mal said lightly, not letting the annoyance show in her voice.
You tripped over your next step. “Wait, is that what he was doing? I thought he was just trying to get training tips for the next tournament.”
Mal laughed. Oh you would give anything to make her laugh like this every day. “Clearly he’s not as perceptive as father.”
You raised your eyebrows at her.
“Neither of my parents were surprised.” She said simply.
“Apparently I’m not very perceptive either,”you said smiling.
The song ended and everyone applauded as the orchestral members stood and bowed.
As they sat down to begin the next song Mal grabbed your hand and pulled you from the dance floor out into the gardens. It was a quiet night, and as you strolled beside the hedges the murmur of the ballroom behind you joined the background noise of the crickets and falling water.
“You know, the court would lose their heads if they caught us out here. Can’t you hear them now? A knight and a princess, alone at night. How utterly scandalous,” You said in mock horror, entirely expecting Mal to giggle with you.
But she didn’t. She paused, pulling you to a stop. “Let them talk,” She said, flipping open her fan and drawing it across her cheek.
“But aren’t you concerned for your virtue and all that?”
“I am never afraid of anything when I’m with you, Mal said, looking up at you, the stars reflecting in her eyes, “you’re my knight.”
Your gaze flickered between her eyes and her lips as you slowly closed the distance between you, giving her the chance to pull away if she wanted. She met you halfway instead, softly connecting her lips with yours.
The fan moved behind you, shielding the two of you from view of the ballroom. This moment was yours alone. If anyone were to look out into the garden they would be hard pressed to imagine the passion between a lady knight and her princess.

You didn’t know? - Mal Pugh x Reader
Tumblr media
A/N this wasn’t prompted, it’s just something I came up with so let me know what you think :) Also for the purposes of this story Lindsey, Mal, and Reader all grew up in Denver Colorado.
To be fair you thought everyone already knew, and it’s not like you were hiding it. So it is understandable to see why you were so confused when you got back to your room shared with Kelley to find the whole team waiting for you. You glance around the room and see Lindsey give you a sympathetic look, which only continues to confuse you, before finally settling on Mal silently asking her whats going on which she answers with a shrug.
“Hey guys... what’s up?” you say to the group as you take a seat beside your girlfriend.
“Okay now that you’re both here I just want to start off by saying that we love you both very much and we only want to see two happy.” Christen says glancing around as the others nod in agreement.
“Now that both of who is here? What’s going on?” you’re getting more and more anxious the longer it takes for them to tell you what’s going on.
“This is an intervention (Y/N).” Ash tells you bluntly “You and Mal need to get your heads out of your asses and shack up already.”
She gets a nice slap on the back of her head and a very angry “Ash!” from Ali at this.
You’re shocked. The team is holding an intervention for you and your girlfriend to get together, but you already are. You take a second to look at Mal and find that she is just as confused as you are. Just as you are about to respond Lindsey speaks up from her spot in the corner of the room.
“I’m so sorry! I tried to buy you guys some time and convince them this wasn’t a good idea but they wouldn’t listen.”
Several surprised voices speak out at once at the revelation. “WAIT WHAT!?” and “YOU KNEW!?” being the only things I’m able to catch before they all start talking over themselves.
You and Mal share another glance before you both bust out laughing. As you continue to laugh the voices slowly start to dissipate before the only sound left in the room is the sound of your combined laughter.
“What’s so funny?” multiple voices ask at once.
“Do you want to tell them or should I?” Mal says looking at me while trying to keep her laughter at bay.
“You can tell ‘em babe” you say through a fit of giggles
“BABE!?” you immediately hear Emily screech, only causing you to laugh harder.
“So as you know Me, (Y/N), and Lindsey all grew up together in Denver but since Linds is older we didn’t meet her until her senior year when we were all on the high school team together. (Y/N) and I however were neighbors and have been in classes together since Kindergarten. We’ve been dating since our freshman year so that’s how Linds knows and we just assumed that everyone else knew since everyone knew about us on the youth national teams. We haven’t had to tell anyone since we were eight-teen because they already knew, and it’s not like we try to hide it so we honestly thought you knew.” You smile at Mal as she tells the condensed version of your story, as she finishes you grab her hand and bring it to your lips for a soft kiss.
“You forgot the best part babe.” you say as Mal gives you a confused look to which your only response is a mischievous smirk. “And what might that be?” she asks, giving in to her curiosity.
“That we’re married of course!” you say holding back a laugh at the reaction of your teammates who are too stunned to speak.
“HOLD UP! REWIND THE TAPE REAL QUICK! DID YOU SAY MARRIED!?” Emily screams breaking the silence
“That I didn’t know about” Lindsey says once she realizes everyone was looking to her to see if she was keeping that from them too.
“Oh silly me, how could I forget.” Mal says stifling a giggle.
“So you’re telling me that the two of you got married without your bestfriend!” Emily says for once without yelling.
At the same time Mal and I respond “(Y/N) is my best friend.”/ “Mal is my best friend” and give each other a high five without looking.
“Your bestfriend besides each other then.” Emily says exasperated
“Well Rose was in Ohio at the time and Tierna was in California so it probably would’be been hard to convince their parents to let them travel to Colorado for two six year old’s wedding.” you say holding back a grin while waiting to see if anyone caught it.
Looking around you see relief flash across many of the veterans faces having caught that the two of you aren’t actually married. You also see Tierna and Rose high five at being named your best friends over Emily.
“So you’re not married?” Sam asks confused
“No, not in the eyes of the law at least,” you say chuckling “I just wanted to see you guys sweat.”
You pull a chain from around your neck revealing the 25 cent ring from your kindergarten wedding. “Doesn’t mean I’m not gonna trade in this baby for the real thing in a few years.” you say winking at Mal as you tuck it back into your shirt.
You watch as a blush creeps up Mal’s face, she gives you a shy smile as she moves to hide her face in the crook of your neck. You can feel feather light kisses before she whispers, “I can’t wait.” She pulls away slowly and the two of you share a grin.
A chorus of “Aww” brings you out of your bubble as you turn to your teammates.
“We’re so happy for you guys!” Kelley yells before tackling the two of you to your bed which initiates a group hug.
The rest of the night is spent telling stories about your childhood together, how you got together, and Lindsey revealing how she thought the whole thing was supposed to be a secret.
Your personal favorite story being how Mal punched a 3rd grader three times her size at your recess wedding for calling you dykes, and then punching the same kid nine years later for doing the same thing when the two of you finally got together in high school. (Don’t tell Ali, but this was Ash’s favorite too)
He came out three years later and reached out to the two of you to apologize and Mal begrudgingly apologized for breaking his nose. Twice.
Around midnight everyone started heading back to their own rooms and as you were saying your goodbyes Kelley told you she was going to room with Christen tonight so that you an Mal could spend the night together. She and Chris where the last to leave so you both thanked them and started getting ready for bed.
As you lay down with Mal tucked into you in a way that feels like you were made to hold each other just like this you can’t help but smile. You mumble an “I love you” into her forehead as you leave a kiss there. Right before you drift to sleep you hear her speak into your neck “I love you too (Y/N), sweet dreams babe” And sweet dreams they were, every time with Mal in your arms your dreams are of your future with her.

Coming Home for Christmas - (Mal Pugh x reader)
Mal loved Christmas
It was without a doubt her favourite time of the year. Every year it felt like she was 6 years old again as her excitement grew with each passing day getting closer and closer to Christmas. She just loved everything about it. The playing in the snow. Spending time with the family. Belting out the lyrics to Christmas songs. Drinking hot chocolate while snuggling up in front of the fire.
But what really made Christmas special was the people she spent it with.
One of the few downsides of being a professional soccer player is the lack of time. She spent so much of the year away from family and always training whether it be for club or the national team meant she didn't get to see her family as much as she would have liked. Not to say she regretted any of it. It was the one of the few sacrifices of being on one of the best teams in the world. No, what she regretted was the lack of time. She regretted how time seemed to slip by so easily. It just seemed to slip through her hands. She could do nothing but watch as it helpless slipped away.
But that's what made the holidays even better. She cherished the time she got to spend surrounded by her family and friends. It just made the holidays just so special no matter how stressful it was at times.
It was also a constant reminder of her relationship.
Y/n L/n has been in Mal's life since she was 6 years old. She has been there through the highs and lows of her life and her career. They had done practically everything together. Growing up she attended every single one of Mal's games and whenever she needed someone to help her practice Y/n was always there to fill whatever position was required. Y/n was Mal's first call after getting called up the National Team and you better believe your ass that Y/n was there in the front row cheering her on when she made her debut. It was only after Y/n surprised her at the game did she realised that she had fallen for her best friend.
Mallory had fallen and had fallen hard
So you can only imagine her delight when on Christmas Day 2017 after both being caught under the mistletoe together Y/n kissed her confessing how she's been harbouring feelings for the forward for a while now. Mal was so dazed by what was happening that she could only stare shocked at the poor girl leading her to believe she didn't feel the same. It was only when the girl started to stumble over her words apologizing profusely for her actions did Mal regain her senses and pull her back into a gentle kiss.
And that was the beginning of their relationship.
It also didn't hurt that it was the same day a year later that they told each other that they loved each other. Christmas for Mal was her favourite time of year for all those reasons. I mean how could you possibly hate Christmas after all that? She had everything she needed. But this year it was slightly different. She had the snow, she had the carols, she had the presents. She even had family.
But she didn't have Y/n.
See while Mal decided to join the Bruins and eventually The Spirit, Y/n enlisted in the Army. Ever since she was younger all she wanted to do was help people. She wanted to make people's lives better. She wanted to do some good in the world. So she became a medic for the Army. Running into battle to help the people who help serve and protect their country. And although it was tough they preserved. Y/n's selflessness was one of the reason she fell in love with her and as much as she hated being away from her, Mal knew that she couldn't stop Y/n from doing what she wanted to do and that was to help people.
She missed her girlfriend. But Mal knew that it wouldn't be for much longer. Y/n promised she would be here for Christmas. It was their holiday. She would never miss such and important day for the two of them. And she never breaks her promises. Which is why Mal as happy as could be answered the facetime request immediately after seeing her girlfriend's name flash on the screen.
She immediately stopped everything she was doing and smiled as she answered the facetime request. She practically squealed when she saw the image of her girlfriend who's been away from her for over a year now, "Hey Babe!" But her smile faltered when she saw Y/n give her a weak smile in return, "Hey Love". Mal scrunched up her eyebrows, "What's wrong?" Y/n sighed and bites the corner of her lip as she stares back at her long term girlfriend.
Immediately Mal knows something is wrong. Mal has known her girlfriend long enough to know that her has a habit of biting the corner of her lip when she's nervous about something.
Or something has gone terribly wrong
"What's wrong?" Mal asks as she frowns lightly at the screen. Y/n's shoulders slumped as she released a big sigh dragging her hand down her face. This did nothing to ease Mal's nerves, "Y/n?" Y/n looked sadly at the Mal as she wanted nothing more than to hug her in this moment after the disaster of a day she had today, "There was an attack on the base...".
Mal's eyes widen, "Oh my god! Are you okay? Are you hurt?" She quickly shakes her head, "No! No I'm fine. Everyone's fine. A few bumps and bruises but nothing we can't handle". Mal could see Y/n look down no doubt playing with her fingers before she looked back up at her sadly, "The plane on base that was planning on bringing us home was damaged in the attack". Mal's breath hitched as Y/n continued, "It was the only plane on base at the moment and there's a storm incoming and they don't think they can get a plane here in time before it hits".
"What does that mean?" Mal asked her voice dropping to a whisper. She tried to look anywhere else but her y/e/c met Mal's brown orbs lacking their usual sparkle, "I don't think I'm going to be home for Christmas".
It was that moment that Y/n wished nothing more than to tell her it was a terrible joke. She could feel her heart break as she watched as Mal's face dropped. The smile that never failed to light up a room disappeared in a second.
And the worst of it all was the fact that there was hundreds of miles in between them stopping her from comforting the love of her life.
"I'm really sorry Love. But because of the storm they can't get another plane to get us home. And it means that they're short on medics so they need me to stay until they can get someone to replace me. I swear Mal if there was a way-" she tried to soften the blow as if it would relieve the forward in some way.
Mal could see how distraught the medic was at telling her the devastating news. She knew that she would rather give her left arm than miss Christmas at home. She knew that she was trying her best to seem okay for her because as much as Mal hated the idea of not being together for Christmas.
She knew that Y/n hated it more
"Babe?" Mal says stopping Y/n from her ramble before she went into a downward spiral. She tries to put on her most convincing smile as she looks at her through the camera, "Y/n it's okay. I-its okay really. There's nothing you can do about it. It's just really unfortunate timing". Her face softens as she looks at me sadly, "You know I'm going to do everything in my power to get back home to you as soon as possible right?" Mal smiles lightly, "I know".
It looked like she wanted to say more before her name was called sounding very urgent, "Shit Love I'm really sorry I have to go. His condition just dropped-". But I shake my head, "It's okay go save a life". She snorted at the saying her girlfriend had taken to telling her everytime she had to go away. She quickly kissed her hand putting it to the camera before quietly whispering, "I love you superstar". I smile at her softly, "I love you too Hero". She gave me one last smile before the call disconnected.
Mal sighed as she dropped her phone burying her head in her hands. The most important holiday of the year and she's missing the most important person in her life. Mal loved Christmas.
But this Christmas already seemed off to a bad start.
............
"Is everything okay Mal Pew Pew?" Sonnet asks as she dropped into the seat across from the sombre forward. Everyone noticed that the forward's mood had dropped significantly since the day before. Everyone knew how excited she got at Christmas. The already happy going forward just seemed to shine even brighter at Christmas.
So what happened between yesterday and now that made the forward do a complete 180?
"Yeah what's up? There's been something off with you since yesterday" Lindsey adds as the rest of the team listened in on the conversation. Mal just checks her phone once more only to see that there is still no new message from Y/n. The forward sighs as she runs her hand through her hair, "Y/n's base was attacked".
Everyone's eyes widen as they look at the younger player. "What? Is she okay?" Rose asks sitting up. Mal nods, "Yeah she's okay but she won't be home for Christmas". Everyone was silence. They all knew how important Christmas was for Mal and Y/n. They saw how much the two loved each other. They were the light of each others lives. And they knew how devastated they must be being away from each other at such an important time of the year.
"Awe we're sorry Mal" Christen says as she drops into the space beside the forward with Tobin right beside her as always. Mal shrugs trying to play it off, "It's okay. There's nothing we can do about it. Just really unfortunate timing". Nobody says anything knowing that nothing could make up for the loss of a love one on the holidays. All Christen did was pull the younger forward into a hug.
After all the hell that was the Corona Virus the team decided to hold a massive team celebration for the holidays. All the player's families were all going to join at the end of camp and all spend Christmas together. And while Mal was grateful she would be surrounded by so much friends and family, nothing could replace Y/n being there.
If only she knew how much Y/n was busting her ass trying to get home to her....
...........
Y/n stood back straight hands behind her back as the general looked her over. He eyed one of his top medic up and down, "Are you sure this is what you want?" But all she did was nod respectfully, "Yessir". Even though he look a bit reluctant he nodded nonetheless, "Although I don't like it". Y/n  tensed up before he continued, "I respect your decision and understand why you want to". Y/n relaxed the tiniest bit as she nodded at her superior, "Thank you sir". He starts to nod before he starts filling out some paperwork, "Go pack your bags".
Y/n scrunched her face lightly, "Sorry sir? I don't understand". He just glances up at me with a small grin, "You have a plane to catch". He looks back down going back to writing, "You better hurry. The planes going to be here soon and you need to leave soon to beat the storm". You couldn't stop the smile spreading across the young medic's face, "Thank you sir. For everything". He looks up from his paperwork, "Go home to your girl L/n". Y/n gave him one last salute before rushing out to go pack her bags. The General shook his head with a small smile. Although he hated losing his best medic he knew that where she needed to be was home.
It was the best news she had ever heard. They were somehow able to scramble a nearby charter plane to bring some troops home. Y/n being one of them. Within 15 minutes Y/n had all her belongings packed and was running towards the plane which was scheduled to lift off in 2 minutes. She had just make it into the plane as they were about to lift off. As she had got on the plane she took out the small Polaroid picture of her and Mal. She smiles as she ran her thumb over the creased photo showing just how many times she had taken this photo out. She quickly placed a gentle kiss to the precious photo before tucking it away again and instead swapping it out for her phone.
It was a long flight home but it was okay because Y/n had some major stuff to plan and it would all be worth it in the end to be able to see Mal on Christmas Day.
............
"Christ" Y/n mutters as she pulls her jacket closer to her. Being away from home for so long she almost forgot how cold it was in her home state. However the cold Colorado weather did nothing to deter the medic though as she felt a wave of warmth flood through her as she knew she was so close to seeing her family again. She was close to seeing her Mal again.
Although it seemed like the world was against her today.
It was hard enough for Y/n to find a taxi to drive her to where she needs to be. She blamed it on the heavy snow falling and the fact that most people were probably at home, all bundled up in blankets surrounded by their loved ones enjoying one of the best holidays of the year.
Exactly where Y/n should be right now
Thankfully her prayers were answered as one car pulled over and allowed her in. She quickly told the driver where she was heading before slumping against the seat. They were driving comfortably for a while and Y/n struggled to sit still in the seat.
That was until she faced her next problem
"Shit.." the driver mutters quietly but Y/n was able to hear him over the popular Christmas songs playing quietly from the radio. Y/n leans forward, "What's wrong? Why are we stopped?" The driver gave her a sympathetic, "Sorry but the snow's too heavy and is blocking the roads causing traffic. It pretty much bumper to bumper right now". Y/n sighs as he turns to her fully obviously seeing how important it was for her to get where she needs to be.
Y/n flops back against the seats, "Fuck..."
.............
"Okay time to hand out presents!" Vlatko calls out to all the families scattered around the room. Mal grudgingly gets up from playing with Marley who had been doing well from distracting the girl from missing Y/n right now to now sit beside her sister as everyone moved to the Christmas tree they had set up.
Brianna who could see how much Mal was struggling to get into the Christmas spirit without Y/n present, "You okay?" Mal plasters on a fake smile even though she knows that her sister knows just how fake it is, "I will be". Brianna doesn't say anything and instead turns to her daughter who looks at her aunt confused tilting her head, "I think Aunt Mally needs a hug right now. Don't you think Marls?"
The small girl smile and jumps into her aunt's arms never one to deny a hug. Mal chuckles lightly as she hugs the small girl back, "Thanks Marls". Marley smiles brightly as she turns so she's sitting in Mal's lap as she starts to fiddle with the forward's fingers to keep her occupied.
Mal sat and watched as people one by one exchanged gifts which lifted her spirits the tiniest bit. The team had made it their mission to help their crestfallen teammate. They had done everything and anything which came with the perfect Christmas. They had baked cookies, made gingerbread houses, sang Christmas carols, built snowmen, everything. Which Mal appreciated very much as it relieved the ache in her heart slightly.
And before she knew it, it was her turn to pick presents. "Want to help me open my presents?" Mal asked the little girl in her lap who nodded enthusiastically. But just as they started tearing into the first present the door burst open.
Mal's face scrunched up as she heard her teammates gasp looking at something behind her. She shifts around turning to see how has her teammates attention. But her eyes widened as she saw who stood behind her staring straight at her.
Because there stood Y/n L/n
Brianna was the first to recover as she moved her daughter out of her sisters lap and into hers. At this Mal scrambled to her feet and ran into Y/n who had her arms open waiting for her. "Your here" Mal cried out into her shoulder as she clutched onto her for dear life, "your really here".
Y/n had never felt more complete in her life as she wrapped her arms around the girl she so desperately loved, "I'm here Love. I'm home". Hearing this Mal pulled back and kissed Y/n harder than she ever had before. In any other moment they would have been mindful that they were in a room filled with the family and friends but all that mattered in that moment was each other. After being away from each other for just over a year, all they cared about was that they were back in each others arms.
Once they separated Mal looked into Y/n's eyes as both their eyes started to water, "But how? I thought-you said you couldn't-". Mal just couldn't get the words out but Y/n chuckled, "Did you really think I wouldn't move heaven and earth to make it back to you for Christmas?" Mal laughs but as she wrapped her hand around her neck and Y/n held her face in her hands she flinched lightly, "Why are you so cold?"
Y/n looked a bit sheepish as she gave her a small smile and her cheeks flushed but Mal could tell whether it was from the cold or her question, "Well I was in a rush and I didn't get time to change. And then we got stuck in traffic and then the taxi broke down. So I kinda ended up running here".
Mal pulled back a bit shocked, "You ran here? Babe it's snowing outside!" "Oh trust me I know" Y/n laughed making her girlfriend shake her head at her in disbelief. "Beside" Y/n grinned, "it's not the first time I ran through a snow storm to tell you I loved you". Mal smiles at the memory of how when they first said that special 4 letter word with Y/n almost killing herself in the process as she ran through a snowstorm to Mal's house to tell her before Mal could even get a blanket around her to warm her up.
"Your so stupid" Mal mumbles as she brushes from snow out of Y/n's hair. But that doesn't stop the massive face splitting smile from spreading across Y/n's face, "I love you too". Mal smiles as she presses another kiss to her girlfriend's lips, "I love you more than anything in the world".
Mal took her girlfriend's hand and dragged her towards their friends and family, "Cmon let's get you warmed up". But they didn't make it far before something collided with Y/n's legs, "Y/n!" Y/n smiles as she picked up the small girl in her arms, "Hey Marls". The small girl tucked herself into the crook of Y/n's neck and she wrapped her arms around her neck in a tight hug, "I missed you". Y/n just kissed her head and hugged her back gently, "I missed you too Marley". "Not as much as me" Mal said quietly leaning into the medic's side causing her to wrap her arm around the soccer player.
After greeting her family and friends from her long time abroad she found her place right beside Mal as they resumed opening Mal's presents. The two were making sure that they were always touching in some sort of way as Marley help the two open Mal's presents. Once Mal opened her last present Y/n gave her a small smile, "I'm sorry I don't have a present for you..." But Mal simple shakes her head intertwining their fingers, "The greatest gift I could ever receive is having you home for Christmas".
Y/n smile brightly, "Well that's good because..." Mal frowns as Y/n detaches theirs and stands up in front of her for a second. But that all changes when Y/n bends onto her knee.
There was a pin drop silence as everyone watched in awe as Y/n pulled out a small box smiling at the forward who's eyes started to water once more with her hand clasped tightly in front of her mouth.
"Mallory Pugh" she starts, "you have been an essential part of my life since I was 6 years old. I couldn't possibly imagine my life without you there. Through the highs and lows, through the best and worst of times we have been there for each other. And the thought of not being home for Christmas with you made me realize something". She takes a deep breath as she sees tears stream down Mal's face, "I don't ever want to worry about missing another Christmas with you. I want to be home for every Christmas for the rest of our lives. I want to be there cheering you on at every match. I want to be the one you come home to and argue about with one of us do the dishes". Everyone laughs while Mal snorts remembering all the playfully arguements they have over who's turn it is to do the dishes only to end up doing them together in the end.
"I want to start a family with you. I want to give you all the things I promised you if you'll let me. So..". She opened the small box to reveal a beautiful diamond ring, "Will you, Mallory Diane Pugh, make me the happiest person alive and marry me?"
Mal doesn't even say anything and instead flings herself into Y/n's arms. The force of which sends the two of them toppling to the ground. But Y/n barely had anytime to recover as Mal smashed her lips against hers. They were vaguely aware that everyone else was cheering like mad for the young couple. When Mal finally broke the kiss, the two of them gasping for air, Mal nods frantically, "Yes. Yes! I will marry you". Y/n smiled before bringing her into another kiss.
As Y/n lifted them up off the ground they were immediately swarmed by their family. "It's about time!" Horace laughs as he hugs Y/n. Mal's eyes widen, "You knew?!" He shrugged sending a wink at the medic, "She's had our blessing since you were 18". Mal looked at Y/n who blushed, "I asked ages ago but I wanted to wait a little longer until we were both stable". Mal nods and interlocks their fingers kissing her cheek.
"So how long do we have you for?" Rose asked after looking at the ring perched on her friend's finger. Mal's smile falters slightly as she looks to her now fiancée. But Y/n smiles brightly down at her soon to be wife, "How about forever?"
Now this catches everyone's attention
"What?" Mal breathes out. Y/n smiles, "As of today I have been honourably discharged from service". Mal jumps up again wrapping her arms and legs around her, "Your staying?" Y/n nods kissing Mal's temple, "Forever Love. I'm staying forever".
Once again everyone smiles the young couple as Vlatko smiles, "I guess now is a good time to introduce our teams new addition to the medical staff". Everyone turns to Y/n who smiles. All the youngsters plus Kelley jump on top of Y/n and start cheering. "I'll also be taking over diets and fitness training alongside Dawn so I don't know if you'll be cheering for much longer" Y/n laughs.
Once everything gets back on track, Mal takes residences in Y/n's lap as they move onto Tobin's gifts. "I love you so much Superstar" Y/n whispers in Mal's ear as Tobin unwraps a new skateboard from Ash. "I love you too Hero" she whispers back. Y/n presses a kiss to Mal's shoulder as she wraps her arms around the smaller girls waist. This had to have been the happiest moment of their life so far. Nothing could top this not even winning a World Cup. But what did you expect.
They both loved each other more than they love Christmas

Secrets and Distractions [Mal Pugh x Morgan!Reader]
Tumblr media
requested by @laikato: Y/N Morgan is the little sister of Alex Morgan and with that she is the baby of the team that needs to be protected. when Y/N became Mal's girlfriend the team want to talk to Mal so 2 or 3 distract y/n while the rest have a talk with Mal.
You bounce your knees in anticipation, as you wait outside your girlfriend’s hotel room. It had been almost two months since you’d seen Mal, as you played in Orlando along side your sister and she played in DC. But now, as you’re both in LA for national team camp, you were looking forward to spending some quality time with your girlfriend.
Mal cracks open the door peeking her head out. “Hi.” She smiles when she sees you, pulling you into the room, quickly shutting the door behind you. Once your behind closed doors, she wraps you into her arms, and brings you in for a sweet kiss.
“Hi.” You grin, as you two separate.
“I’ve missed you.” She pouts.
“I know, babe. I missed you, too.” You whisper, leaning your forehead against hers.
“I wish we were rooming together, then we wouldn’t have to sneak around.”
“Me too. But at least we’re together now.” You give her a small smile, which she returns.
“C’mon,” Mal drags you to her bed. “I wanna catch up on my snuggles before dinner.”
You giggle, as she smothers you.
—————
Being Alex Morgan’s younger sister came with a lot of pressure, especially because you followed her footsteps playing on the USWNT. Although you, yourself, were a midfielder, people still drew comparisons and had ginormous expectations for you.
Along with the pressure from the fans and critics came the constant babying and overprotecting from your national team teammates. It made sense when you had joined the team about four years ago, as you were only sixteen, but now that you were twenty, you were still being treated like the baby of the team, your sister probably being the one to blame.
Ever since you were little, your sister was always super protective of you, as you were the youngest of your three sisters, being almost ten years younger than Alex. Her overprotectiveness continued when you moved to Orlando to play for the Pride, and even amplified when you joined the national team. As she doted over you at every camp, your teammates shortly followed, checking up on you every hour, making sure you were eating right, and giving you piggy backs everywhere.
Although you thoroughly enjoyed cuddling with Kelley or doing yoga with Christen, you often found their babying to be annoying and frustrating. So when you and Mal started dating about three months ago, you both knew you had to keep your relationship a secret, as you knew the team, particularly your sister, would overreact and freak out.
—————
“Mallory! Let’s go! You’re late for dinner.” Tobin yells, knocking on the door.
The two of you instantly separate, your cuddle session, which turned into a make-out session, interrupted.
Checking her phone, Mal’s eyes widen. “Shoot! We gotta go.”
Looking at the clock, you wince, noticing you were ten minutes late for dinner. You knew your sister was probably panicking a little, as you were rarely late to anything.
Grabbing your stuff, the two of you head down to dinner, intertwining your hands. Not realizing Tobin was still waiting, you and Mal jump apart when you see her leaning against the wall looking at her phone.
“Hey, you ready?” She looks up, a little surprised when she sees you. “Oh, hey (Y/N), you hanging out with Mal?”
You let out a breath of relief at Tobin’s obliviousness. “Yeah, we were just catching up.” I mean, technically, you weren’t lying.
Tobin nods, as the three of you make your way towards the elevator. “Cool. Well, you might wanna text your sister because she was worried when you weren’t answering her calls or texts, and now she’s probably going crazy that you’re not in your room.”
You grimace, almost picturing Alex pacing back and forth in your shared hotel room, one hand on her forehead the other on her hip. Pulling out your phone, you shoot her a quick text, telling her your coming down to dinner now.
—————
At dinner, you sat next to Mal at your usual table with the youngsters, when you hear the door fly open.
“(Y/N) (Y/M/N) Morgan!” Alex yells, storming into the room, Kelley following not far behind.
You hunch your shoulders, trying to make yourself disappear. As you feel your sister approach you, you turn to face her, shrinking under her gaze.
“Where on earth have you been?! I’ve been calling and texting you.”
“I was hanging out in Mal’s room.” You explain.
Alex’s face softens, but you can tell she’s still upset. “Next time at least tell me where you’re going before you leave, okay?” You nod, as she places a kiss on your head before going to sit with Kelley and Allie. Though you were fed up with her constant hovering, you didn’t have the energy to bring it up, knowing it would only lead to a fight.
You turn back to your food, but you’ve suddenly lost your appetite. Noticing your shift in mood, Mal places her hand on your thigh.
“Hey, you okay?” She whispers, rubbing your leg soothingly.
You give her a slight nod and a small smile. “Mhm.” But Mal can tell you’re not telling her the whole truth, taking note to talk to you about this later. Squeezing your knee, she quickly gives you a reassuring kiss on your shoulder before returning to her dinner.
Unbeknownst to you or your girlfriend, Emily witnessed Mal’s small action, her eyes growing wide and her jaw dropping.
—————
After dinner and after the team meeting, Pinoe announced that she was hosting team bonding in her and Tobin’s room. Not really feeling up to being smothered by your sister and your teammates, you make up an excuse to slip away.
“I think I’m just gonna go back up to my room. I’m feeling a bit tired. It’s been a long day.” That wasn’t completely a lie, given that you had gotten up at four in the morning to catch your flight to LA.
“Aw, c’mon, Pony! Don’t be a party pooper!” Ashlyn hollers. You roll your eyes at the nickname the team had created when you first joined, a play on Alex’s infamous ‘baby horse’ nickname.
Your sister furrows her brows worriedly. “You want me to come with you?” You’re tempted to say yes, knowing you’d missed her cuddles. Because despite living in Orlando and Alex’s constant begging to move into her guest room, you’d decided to get your own apartment, wanting some freedom and independence.
You shake your head. “Nah, I’m good, Al.” Before you leave, you glance over at your girlfriend, subtly nodding for her to follow.
After you’d left, the team was deciding which game to play. Kelley and Emily were currently fighting Ashlyn and Julie over playing Truth or Dare or Never Have I Ever. Before the game could start, Mal gets up from her seat on the floor.
“You guys,” She starts, “I think I’m gonna go check up on (Y/N/N).”
Despite many protests, the your girlfriend heads up to your room. After Mal leaves, the team returns to their game.
“You think there’s something going on between those two?” Kelley asks jokingly, almost rhetorically. Most of the team laughs at the idea of baby Morgan dating someone, while Emily remains quiet, remembering what she’d seen at dinner.
Noticing the stillness and quietness of the younger defender next to her, Kelley turns to her, eyes narrowing. “Do you know something, Sonny?” The entire team turns to the woman, all wanting to hear what she knows about the team baby.
Emily audibly gulps under the scrutinizing glare of twenty other women. “I—ummm—I don’t have…I don’t know anything.”
Alex lets out a small growl, Kelley having to brace her best friend, stopping her from charging the younger woman.
Unable to keep it in any longer, Emily reveals the interaction she had seen and spills her suspicions.
—————
The next day, Emily and Rose had stuck to your side all day, saying they’d missed spending time with you. While you were always down to spend hangout with your best friends, you also wanted to spend some time with your girlfriend, but Tobin and Christen were hogging her.
Once training was over, and you were loading the bus, Emily and Rose catch up to you.
“(Y/N/N), wanna get some lunch with us? We were planning on going to your favorite restaurant…” Rose sings, knowing your weakness for the Mexican restaurant in downtown LA that you had gone to with your sister ever since you were little.
Your eyes grow large, and you beam, nodding your head excitedly. You skip on to the bus, going to tell Mal your lunch plans, but you see Tobin is sitting in your seat. You frown, looking for a place to sit. Kelley had moved to sit next to Christen, leaving the seat next to Alex empty. You go to sit next to your sister, who is already moving her bag, inviting you next to her.
“What’s with the seat change?” You ask, tilting your head sideways.
Alex shrugs casually. “I dunno. Laura called, so Kel wanted to talk to Chris about something, and I guess Tobin just wanted to hangout with her child.”
“Oh.” You sigh, trying to hide your disappointment.
“What? You too old to sit with your sister?” Alex teases.
“No! Of course not.” You protest. “In fact, I’ve missed you.” You lean your head on your older sister’s shoulder.
“I’ve missed you too, bug.” She drops her head on top of yours, as the two of you catch up on everything from soccer to just life in general.
—————
After showering and putting on a casual outfit, you stand outside of the hotel, waiting for Rose and Emily, so you can head out to lunch. A couple of moments later, your best friends exit the hotel and approach you.
“You ready, (Y/N/N)?” Emily loops her arm in yours, as Rose finishes typing a text and puts her phone in her pocket.
“Yup! Let’s go.”
The three of you stroll though the streets of LA, making your way to your favorite Mexican restaurant.
—————
While you were out for lunch, the team had other plans, those being to have a little talk with your girlfriend.
Mal was laying on her bed, scrolling through Instagram, when she heard a knock on her door. Before she could reach the door, it swings open, revealing an angry Alex Morgan, who abruptly stops in front of the younger forward, followed by a couple of the other USWNT veterans.
“Sit.” She points to the chair, as the other women take their place, sitting on the beds.
Mal swallows nervously, following the other woman’s orders.
Alex takes a deep breath, trying to calm herself, obviously failing. “Are you and (Y/N) dating?”
Mal’s eyebrows rose in shock. “Uhhh…umm..I—uh..”
“Well?” Alex impatiently asks, hands on her hips.
“Yes.” Mal reveals.
Alex throws her hands up in the air. “Mallory Pugh!” Mal flinches at the older forward’s volume. “I cannot believe you. You know how I feel about my younger sister dating. How could you not tell us about this?!”
Mal panics, looking at Tobin and Christen for some help, pleading them to relieve Alex’s wrath.
“Don’t look at us, kiddo.” Tobin holds her hands up.
“Sorry, Mal, but we’re with Al on this one.” Christen looks at her with a little sympathy.
Mal tries the other women in the room, but she knows that they’re all probably feeling the same was as Alex, given that they all see (Y/N) as a little sister of their own.
“We didn’t tell you guys because we knew how you’d react.” Mal explains.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kelley scoffs. Mal gives her a ‘really’ look, causing the defender to release a small ‘oh’ under her breath.
Too frustrated to say anything, Alex plops down on the bed, running her hands through her hair. Mal hangs her head, feeling guilty, as she takes in the sight before her. These women were your family and basically her second family; the two of you shouldn’t have kept this from them, no matter how annoying their babying could be.
“I’m sorry.” Mal mumbles.
“How long have you been dating?” Megan questions.
“About three months.”
The shock is clearly written all over the veterans faces, as they let the new information sink in. Ashlyn breaks the silence, clapping her hands, rubbing them together mischievously.
“So, Mal,” She begins, “now that you’re dating our little Morgan, we have to ask: what are your intentions with (Y/N)?”
Mal shifts nervously. “I really like her, okay?” She sees Alex soften at that, and some of the other women audibly aw. “She lights up my world, and I’ve never met anyone like her. She brings out the best in me, and makes me want to be not only a better player but also a better person. I now understand why you guys are so protective her because ever since we started dating, I just wanna protect her from all the bad things in the world.” Mal huffs out a laugh before murmuring. “I think I love her.”
The veterans now sit silent and shocked, but now for a completely different reason. They had no idea that your relationship was so serious. But before anyone can say anything, someone else speaks up.
“Do you really mean that?” You whisper in disbelief. During Mal’s confession, no one noticed you slipping through the door.
Your girlfriend carefully approaches you, taking your hands in yours.
“Yes. I think I’m falling in love with you, (Y/N) Morgan.” Mal admits, ignoring your teammates, who are still intently watching the two of you.
You pull your girlfriend in for a sweet kiss, pulling away before it gets too heated. Pressing your foreheads together, you smile. “I think I’m falling in love with you, too.” Mal beams, her heart bursting with love for you.
“Alex! (Y/N)’s on her way up here! Sorry but we couldn’t stop her from——” Emily and Rose burst through the door, panting out of breath, taking in the sight of you and your girlfriend’s embrace.
You drop your head onto your girlfriend’s shoulder, laughing at your best friends’s behavior. How you ended up with the best sister, the best team, and the best girlfriend in the entire world, you didn’t know, but you were extremely grateful.

Time for a Talk (Mallory Pugh x Reader/Krashlyn Imagine)
Tumblr media
“I don’t know how you did it, but I am impressed,” you said and Mal just tilted her head and smiled at you. This was your first camp that you didn’t have to share a room with your mothers. Originally, you were supposed to be sharing with them, but now you had a room with Mal. Lindsey was supposed to be rooming with Mal, but now she was with Sonnett. There was a mess of trading, but you didn’t care about that. “How did you do it?”
“A magician never reveals,” Mal said with a teasing smile. You pulled her towards you and pressed your lips against hers. Mal deepened the kiss and pushed you back against the bed. Your knees hit the mattress and then you fell backwards, with her body landing softly on top of yours. Your hands fell to her hips and hers wrapped around your neck as the two of you continued to kiss. The kisses were heated and were soon turning into something more. You were playing in Orlando during the NWSL season and Mal was in New Jersey now, and the distance had already gotten to you.
“Y/n!” Ashlyn, your mother screamed as she barged into your room. Mal scrambled off of you and you sat up with a frustrated groan. “What the hell is going on?”
“Um-,” for a moment, you considered lying to your mother, but you knew better, “- Mal and I were making out.”
“Why were you doing that?” Ashlyn asked and Ali sighed at her wife. “What, it’s a valid question.”
“We were making out because we’re dating,” you said honestly and Ashlyn nodded.
Ash, babe, wait here with Y/n. Mal, can I talk to you in my room please?” Ali asked and Mal stood up and followed your mother out of the room. You sat awkwardly on the bed with Ashlyn and your heart was racing. You were so scared that something would happen that would fuck up your relationship. It was pretty early in the grand scheme of things, but you really liked Mal.
“Slow down,” Ashlyn said and you looked at her with a confused expression on your face. “You look like your mind’s going a million miles an hour.”
“It is,” you said softly.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” Ashlyn asked and it surprised you. Ali had always been the one who had been up for talking between the two of them. Try as she may, you weren’t much of a talker and neither was Ashlyn really. “I know I’m not Ali, but I can try to help you.”
“I’m scared of losing Mallory,” you said and Ashlyn sighed. “I don’t want her to leave me because of this. I mean, she doesn’t need me. She could easily have someone else. I know I’m young and if we broke up, I’d have time to get over it, but I’m not ready to let her go.”
“You won’t have to let her go. Ali would never say or do anything to make Mal leave you. You’re happy with her and we both can see that. She’s just warning her, a little shovel talk,” Ashlyn said with a chuckle. “You guys are gonna be fine, I can tell.”
“Thanks mama,” you said and Ashlyn hugged you tightly. Ali was the talker and Ashlyn’s strength came in hugs.
“We were worried when you didn’t want to stay with us, but we get it now. You need to spend time with her, and we’ll give you that time. Just, please don’t shut us out. Everyday we’re reminded that you’re growing up and it’s hard on us. You’re not our little girl anymore and eventually you’ll have to leave us to go live your own life with someone else,” Ashlyn said and you leaned against her shoulder.
“Even when I’m off living my own life, you two will be there,” you promised and Ashlyn smiled. “Wasn’t it you who told me that no matter how old I get, I’m always your little girl?“

You’re The One I Love - Mallory Pugh/Reader
prompt: Since you’re in writing mood: how about something with a jealous Mal or Lindsey (I feel like we don’t see many imagines with either one of them)?
warnings: None
words: 1094
Tumblr media
Y/N POV
I grinned as I talked with Jessie. Even though Canada had lost, I appreciated that Jessie came to talk to me. Jessie and I had been friends since we were kids after we met on the playground at school. We had been best friends until I moved from Canada to America. Jessie and I had stayed in touch and I had even gone up through Canada’s youth teams before deciding to play with the US.
“Swap?” Jessie asked while she held onto her jersey.
I nodded my head because I always loved swapping jerseys with our competition. I had a whole collection of jerseys because of how much I liked to swap. I pulled the jersey over my head before handing it to Jessie and taking her jersey. I pulled Jessie’s jersey over my own head and I knew that there were pictures being taken of us.
“How are you and Mal?” Jessie asked. She was one of the only people who knew of my relationship with Mal. We had decided to keep it quiet from most of our teammates since she had just gotten out of her relationship with Dansby. I didn’t mind because I didn’t really want our teammates to be nosy about our relationship when we were still figuring each other out.
“We’re good,” I smiled at her. Jessie gave me a small smile. Mal had made plans to spend some time with me at UCLA as we got ready for the SheBelieves Cup. “She’s gonna come and stay with me for a little bit so we can train together for our next tournament.”
“That’s right,” Jessie nodded. I knew that she sometimes forgot what my national schedule was like. “You guys have that SheBelieves Cup. Will Mal make the roster for it?”
“Yeah, she should,” I nodded. I had missed getting to play with Mal during the CONCACAF Tournament. It also didn’t help when Mal had shown up with tears in her eyes because Vlatko had left her off the roster for this tournament. “She was so upset about not making the roster. It broke my heart to see her hurting so much.”
“You guys are so in love with each other.” Jessie smiled. She gave me a quick hug. “I gotta go, but I’ll text you later.”
“Yeah, definitely,” I waved to Jessie as she ran off. “Hey! I’ll be in Canada soon, so I’ll let you know when.”
Jessie gave me a thumbs-up as she ran off. I grinned and turned around to head to my locker room. I was surprised to see Mal standing at the tunnel. I knew that she had come to the game, but I didn’t realize that she was still here.
I jogged over to Mal before giving her a hug. It was nice to see her since I hadn’t gotten to during the tournament. Mal gave me a hug back before we headed to the locker room.
“So, you and Jessie?” Mal asked. I shook my head because I knew that most people thought I was dating Jessie.
“Don’t worry, Mal,” I assured her. Mal looked up at me. “Jessie and I are just friends. You don’t have anything to worry about. You’re the one I love.”
“You love me?”
I stopped and moved in front of Mal. I hadn’t told her that yet, but I never would deny it if someone asked me about it. I smiled at her as I cupped her face.
“I love you, Mallory Pugh. There’s no one else that I love. You’re the one that I love, never forget that.”
Mal smiled at me before nodding. Instead of kissing me since there were still people around us, she pulled me into a hug. I grinned before pulling away and walking with her to the locker room. I knew that no one on the team would have a problem with Mal being there.
“So, (Y/N), when are you and Fleming getting together?” Sonnett called out to me. I shook my head because this was something I had been getting used to recently. Sonnett and Kelley had found out that I was close to Jessie and they both assumed that I was dating her or had a crush on her.
“It’s obvious that you guys love each other,” Kelley added. Christen rolled her eyes as she slapped Kelley’s shoulder. Christen looked to where Mal was standing slightly behind me.
“Hey, Mal,” Christen said as she held her arms open. Mal smiled before jumping into Christen’s hug.
I shook my head as Mal started to talk to Christen and eventually, Tobin joined their chat. I moved to my locker and sat down by it. I pulled the jersey off of me before putting it into my bag so that it would actually get back to UCLA with me. I wasn’t surprised when Sonnett and Kelley both sat down by me.
“Seriously, (Y/N), when are you and Fleming going to start dating?” Kelley asked. I shook my head at the defender and had no plans on answering her question which caused her to start poking my arm. “Don’t ignore me, (Y/N). Everyone knows that you and Fleming would look cute together.”
“I’m not going to date Jessie,” I shook my head. I was getting tired of their assumptions. “We’re just friends. We grew up together as kids. I’m not into Jessie like that.”
“Come on, we all know that you guys are gonna get together and get married,” Sonnett poked at me. She had said it loud enough that it drew enough attention to us. Mal glared at Sonnett and I was surprised when she stormed over to us.
“Mal, come on,” I stood up drawing the attention to the two of us. “You know that I-”
She cut me off by pulling me closer to her and kissing me. I was surprised by it but I quickly placed my hands on her waist. I felt Mal’s hands move to rest on my abs. I ignored the whistles that came from some of our teammates. When Mal pulled back, she rested her forehead against mine.
“Sorry,” Mal whispered. I stared into her eyes because I wasn’t sure why she was sorry. “I just couldn’t stand them.”
“Don’t worry about it,” I assured. I gave her temple a kiss. “They would have found out eventually.”
Maybe it would be better for our teammates to know about our relationship. They could finally stop pestering me about dating Jessie. But I had to admit, that a jealous Mal was hot.

A Supernatural Mistake - A USWNT Imagine
Tumblr media
Prompt: Reader and Kelley+the children mess around with an old book with a spell that turns them into the supernatural creatures that they would most likely identify not thinking its real until they wake up as those creatures and get shocked when they see reader as a devil/demon because she seems like an angel and that’s what they thought she would be
A/N: Two imagines in two days who am I? I know I only got this request yesterday but I couldn’t help myself and had to write it right away, I hope you all like it, most of it was written as 2am last night so I apologize for any mistakes
“Look what we found!” Kelley said as she and Emily came into the hotel room where Y/N, Lindsey, Rose, Mal, Sam, and Kristie were hanging out. Kelley held out a book that no one could read the title of. “We found this at a garage sale and the guy basically gave it to us for free!”
“Didn’t take you as the reading type,” Lindsey said.
“But this book is different! Right Son?” Kelley said, “She can read Latin and it’s a book of spells!”
“Or something,” Sonnett said, “I haven’t taken Latin since high school.”
“Maybe there was a reason the guy who sold it really wanted it gone,” Mal said, “Maybe we shouldn’t read it.”
“Oh come on, don’t be a coward!” Kelley said, “It’s not like it’s real anyway, nothing is going to happen.”
“Don’t worry Mal,” Y/N said, “I’ll protect you from any bad spells.”
Kelley and Sonnett put the book in the middle of the bed that everyone was sitting on and started flipping through the pages. With Sonnett’s limited knowledge of Latin and the help of Google translate, they managed to read the titles.
“Shapeshifting Spell,” Sonnett read, “I think it says…” Sonnett typed on her phone, “It says ‘cast this spell to become who you truly are inside.’”
 “Well that’s vague,” Kristie said.
“What are those pictures?” Y/N asked, “Maybe they explain it.” Kelley grabbed the book and pulled it closer to her, leaning in to look at the faded pictures.
“They look like… animals maybe? But weird looking ones,” Kelley said, passing the book back to Sonnett.
“Maybe they’re supernatural creatures, you know like… werewolves and dragons,” Sonnett said.
“Oooh read that one!” Kelley said.
“Wait, we shouldn’t read the spells,” Mal said, “They could–”
“Could what? Turn us into monsters?” Kelley said, “It’s just a joke book, it’s not real.”
“Hey! Be nice!” Y/N turned to Mal, “It’s okay Mally, I’m sure nothing’s going to happen.”
“Well, we know what Y/N would be,” Kelley said, “She’d be an angel.”
“That’s obvious,” Rose said, “But you’d be a dwarf.”
“What?!” Kelley exclaimed, “I’m not even that short!”
“Nah, Kelley would be a pixie,” Kristie said, “Small, childish, and mischievous, that sounds exactly like Kelley.”
“Well, you’d be a vampire,” Kelley said to Kristie, “Stealing the life force of defenders!”
“What would I be?” Mal asked.
“Hmmm…” Kelley and Kristie put their heads together and started whispering. “Mal, you’d be a werewolf because you’re basically a dog anyway, friendly, energetic, easily distracted,” Kelley said.
 “Scared of storms,” Kristie added.
“And Sonny, Lindsey, and Rose would each be one of Cerberus’s heads,” Kelley burst out laughing and Kristie joined her.
“What about Sam?” Y/N said loudly, interrupting Kelley and Kristie’s laughter, “I’d be an angel, Kelley a pixie, Kristie a vampire, Mal a werewolf, and Sonny, Lindsey, and Rose a giant three headed dog. And Sam would be…”
“A giant bird or something,” Kristie said, “She’s tall and probably wants to fly away from me half the time.”
“You got that part right,” Sam muttered.
“Enough chitchat!” Kelley said, “Sonnett, starting reading!”
“Okay,” Sonnett said after a few minutes, “It says we have to join hands and then have one of us read the spell.”
They joined hands, some (Kelley, Kristie, Rose, and Lindsey) excitedly and quickly, and some (Y/N and Mal) slowly and hesitantly. Then, Sonnett started to read:
“Diabolum invocamus te, corpora nostra mutamus animas nostras et ad nos convertimus qui vere sumus!”
The lights began to flicker and a breeze swept through the room. Y/N felt a chill up her back and looked around at her friends. Kelley had started to look nervous, but was trying hard to hide it, Sonnett hadn’t looked up from the book and her knuckles had started to turn white with how tightly she was holding Lindsey and Kelley’s hands, Mal was shaking. Finally, the lights stopped flickering and the curtains settled.
“S-See?” Kelley said, “Nothing happened, we’re all still normal.”
“I’m feeling tired,” Sonnett said quickly, “We should go to bed.”
Everyone agreed and soon, Y/N was left alone in her room, waiting for her roommate, Christen, to come back. Suddenly, a wave of exhaustion swept over her and she fell back on her bed and fell asleep.
When Y/N woke up, she was hot. She kicked her blankets off and writhed on the bed as she felt like she couldn’t cool down. She was drenched in sweat and wondered what idiot turned the hotel thermostat to max heat. She turned to Christen and found her sleeping peacefully. Y/N then thought she might be sick and figured she better go wake up one of the trainers in case its something serious or contagious. But first a shower.
Y/N entered the bathroom and rubbed her hand across her forehead. She turned on the cold water at the sink and splashed her face. Then she looked up.
 “Shit.”
The face staring back at her wasn’t her. But… it was her. Y/N could see the features of her face, her nose, mouth, they were all still there. Except, her skin was red, her eyes were red, but what caught her attention were the two horns on the top of her head. Y/N shakily raised her hand to touch them, but froze when she saw her hands. Her hands were a dark red and her fingernails had transformed into claws. Y/N, now panicked, started checking the rest of her body. Her toenails were the same as her fingernails and her skin was the same dark red colour.
 “Oh… my… God…”
She had a tail. A dark red, leathery tail that looked like a pitchfork at the end. Y/N looked back into the mirror. She realized that book wasn’t fake at all.
Y/N rushed out of the room into the hallway. She had to find the others.
“Well fuck Kristie, what do you want me to do? Go knocking on all the doors and wake everybody up?” Y/N heard Kelley hiss, “The last thing we need is the entire team in on this.”
Y/N turned the corner, expecting to see Kelley and Kristie. She saw Kristie, who looked normal from the back, but she couldn’t see Kelley.
“Kristie,” Y/N whispered. Kristie whipped around. The first thing Y/N noticed was how pale she looked. Kristie wasn’t Kristie without a tan.
“Wh… Y/N? Is that you?” Kristie asked.
“Yeah, are you alright?” Y/N asked.
“What the fuck?” That was Kelley’s voice. Y/N heard a whizzing by her ear and swatted at it. “Woah hey! Watch it!” Y/N looked over and saw what was definitely Kelley. Except Kelley was a foot tall and flying around her. Y/N couldn’t help it, she started to laugh. Kelley crossed her arms and glared. “It’s not funny!”
“I didn’t think you could get any smaller,” Y/N joked.
“Okay can we get back to what the fuck?” Kristie said, “Y/N you’re… the devil?”
“Um,” Y/N looked down at herself, “Yeah I guess. Or a demon. And Kelley is a pixie I’m guessing.”
“And not happy about it,” Kelley mumbled.
 “And you’re?” Y/N asked Kristie.
“If these are any indication,” Kristie opened her mouth to reveal two long and sharp teeth, “I’m a vampire.”
“Oh, this is bad,” Y/N said.
“Guys? We have a bigger problem,” Sam said behind them. Before Y/N could turn around, she was knocked to the ground. When she looked up from the floor she saw… feathers? Y/N sat up and looked at Sam who was a literal giant bird. Giants wings and all.
“Sorry!” Sam rushed out and then her wings retracted, “I’m still getting the hang of these, they’re huge.”
 “Yeah no shit,” Kelley said.
“We have to find the others,” Y/N said, “There’s got to be something in that book that can change us back.”
“Well, you two can’t be walking around the hotel like that,” Kristie said to Y/N and Sam, “What if somebody sees you?”
“Go to my room,” Kelley said, “Me and Lindsey are roommates but she didn’t come back last night.”
Y/N and Sam went to Kelley’s room while Kelley and Kristie kept looking for the others. It took some work, but they managed to find a way to fit Sam through the door. Y/N paced as Sam tried to find a way to comfortably… perch somewhere. Finally, after what felt like hours, they heard a key card in the door.
“Ow! Stop pushing! It’s not working!” Rose said.
“Ow! Stop hitting my head on the doorframe!” Emily said.
“We can’t all go in at once, let’s go one at a time,” Lindsey said. There was a moment and then:
 “Ow!”
“You did that on purpose!” Rose said.
 “I did not!” Emily said.
“Can you three stop fighting!” Kelley exclaimed quietly, “Rose, you go first, then Lindsey, then Sonnett, okay?”
After a moment, Rose, Lindsey, and Sonnett came into view. Y/N then figured out what the door problem was. Attached to a large dog’s body was Rose, Lindsey, and Sonnett’s heads. They were a literal three headed dog, with Lindsey in the middle and Rose and Emily on either side.
“I wouldn’t be so upset if Sonnett hadn’t made us eat those hotdogs,” Rose said.
“I was the only one who ate them!” Sonnett said.
“Just because we have three different mouths does not mean we don’t share the same stomach!” Rose growled at Sonnett who growled back. Then they were snapping at each other over Lindsey’s head.
“Have fun with them,” Kelley said, “I’m leaving to go find Mal.”
“Hey!” Y/N snapped her fingers and the three heads froze. “Stop fighting and sit.” Immediately, they sat, Rose and Emily facing away from each other. At first Y/N was surprised they actually listened to her, then she realized, she was a demon and they were a demon’s dog.
Y/N jerked away as Sam’s wings extended again.
“Sorry, I was just trying to get comfortable.”
Emily growled, standing up and starting to stalk towards Sam. Y/N stood up and stood between Sam and Emily-Lindsey-Rose.
“No,” Y/N said firmly, “I know she’s a bird but she’s our friend and we do not hunt our friends.” Emily huffed and laid back down. Y/N ran her hand down her face, how were they going to get out of this mess.
“It’s gonna be fine Mal, I promise,” Y/N heard Kristie say as the door opened again. Kelley, Kristie, and Mal came in and shut the door behind them and locked the bolt. Y/N leaned around Emily-Lindsey-Rose to get a good look at Mal who was cowering behind Kristie. Mal looked normal, except for the fact that she was covered in fur.
“Okay werewolf was the last one, we’re all here,” Kristie said.
“Sonnett you have to find a way in that book to change us back,” Kelley said.
 “A-a-are we s-s-s-sure?” Mal asked, “L-l-last time it m-m-made us like th-this.”
“Do you have a better idea?” Kelley snapped and Mal shrunk back, whimpering. Kelley sighed, “I’m sorry, Mal. I’m not mad at you.” Kelley shook her head. “I didn’t know werewolves were so sensitive.”
“The book got us into this mess, and it has to get us out of it, it’s the only way,” Y/N said.
“Before we start,” Lindsey said, “Y/N’s a–”
“Demon,” Y/N, Kelley, Kristie, and Sam said in unison.
“We all thought you’d be an angel because you’re so… sweet and nice and stuff,” Lindsey said.
“Yeah, I’m not exactly thrilled,” Y/N said.
“Says you,” Kelley said, “I’m a foot tall!”
“I wish I was only one foot tall instead of this,” Sam said.
“I have three heads!” Sonnett said. Everyone stopped and looked at each other.
“Yeah, you win,” Y/N said, “Okay, now start reading.” Sonnett looked between the closed book at her feet and Y/N. Y/N raised her eyebrows.
“I don’t have any hands,” Sonnett said.
“Right,” Y/N picked up the book and held it open for Sonnett, “Tell me when to turn the pages.”
“Okay,” Sonnett said after a few minutes, “It says we have to sacrifice a werewolf!” Sonnett turned and pretended to charge at Mal. Mal shrieked and jumped back as Sonnett started laughing. Mal’s eyes got wide and she rushed to the bathroom.
“What’s her problem?” Sonnett said, “I was just joking.”
“Apparently the myth that werewolves were tough is a lie,” Kelley said, “Mal’s like every dog’s anxiety stuck inside one body.”
Mal sheepishly came back a few minutes later when Sonnett was still reading. Sam, finally figuring out how to control herself, raised her wing enough to let Mal hide under it.
“Okay, for real this time, to reverse the spell we have to drink a potion made of frog eyes, swamp water, human hair, and…” Sonnett trailed off, “Wait, nope, never mind, that’s to make it permanent. Okay, here we go, to reverse the spell, we have to join hands again and say the spell backwards.”
“Are you sure that’s what it says?” Kristie asked, “I don’t feel very confident in your Latin skills, no offence.”
“That’s what it says, I promise,” Sonnett said.
 “Okay, then lets do this.”
They formed a circle, joining hands (or feet and wings) as best as they could and then Sonnett started reciting the spell backward. Y/N could feel the air begin to spark with energy. The lights flickered, papers flew, the curtains shook. As soon as Sonnett was finished a force pushed everyone back, separating them and flinging them across the room.
When Y/N regained her wits, she looked down at her hands. Her perfectly normal, human hands. She reached up to her head and felt her normal hair and no horns. She looked at her back and her tail was gone. She looked around as everyone seemed to be doing the same as her. But everyone was normal. Y/N breathed a sigh of relief.
“Oh thank god,” Lindsey gasped, “I’m free!”
“Way to hurt my feelings,” Sonnett said, “Was being attached to me that bad?”
 “Yes.” Rose deadpanned.
“It worked,” Mal said, almost in disbelief, “It actually worked.”
“We need to burn that book,” Kristie said, “Or bury it or throw it in the ocean.”
 “Agreed,” Kelley said.
Everyone fell silent, processing what had just happened. Suddenly, there was a banging at their door. They jumped and froze as Kelley hesitantly opened it.
“Will you idiots shut up?” Pinoe said, “Some of us are trying to sleep.”
“Sorry P,” Kelley said, “We’ll be quiet.”
Pinoe left and Kelley shut the door. Then she laughed and soon everyone joined her.
“Oh man, what a crazy night,” Kelley said.
 ***
“Where were you last night?” Christen asked Y/N at breakfast, “I woke up at 2am and you were gone.” Y/N shook her head.
“You wouldn’t believe it even if I told you.”

Feelings Suck
Uswnt x reader
⚠️T/W: implication to emotional/verbal abuse? Bullying, lil bit of self-harm maybe? lemme know if it’s something else.⚠️
Tumblr media
Main Masterlist
Your first call up to the national team came when you were 16. This had been your dream since you first started watching and playing soccer. Being able to train with such inspirational and empowering women was amazing.
When you arrived, you were kind of shy at first. You honestly didn’t expect to be called up again, so you figured there was no point in trying to get to know everyone and develop relationships.
Much to your surprise, you had been asked to attend another camp. Then, you started to get to know the ladies more and you learned that they were amazing people.
The women were so understanding and just nice in general. If only the media and your classmates had been the same.
Before you had been called up, you weren’t very popular at school. Many didn’t notice you were there; you were essentially invisible to everyone even some teachers. But after you made your debut, things started to change.
You had never yearned for popularity, but hoped it was the good kind if it ever did come to you. But when it came to you, it came fast, hard, and unexpected yet not the way you hoped.
People started pointing out flaws; saying you weren’t good enough to be playing with such great athletes or that you didn’t look like other soccer players.
Not only that, but the media had ripping your ass as well. Almost every time you looked, your social media was full of your mistakes. From compilations of your greatest fails to commentators.
The supposed fans of the Uswnt, were absolutely ruthless to you. Always saying that you didn’t deserve your spot and anybody was easily ten times better than you.
You had your teammates and surely they’d understand what you were going through. The thought of asking for help had crossed your mind multiple times; when you saw Christen just watching television the first time you were roomed together. Or when you and Tobin had spent the day together going to get lunch. There were plenty of times you could’ve reached out, but the constant overthinking and weight you had on your shoulders told you otherwise.
You tried not to let it get to you, but when you hear something so much you start to believe it. If being on the national team gave you this much baggage, you’d rather be invisible like before.
You always thought that you’d burden people with your problems. Everybody has issues of their own that some didn’t know about, but they carried on. That’s what you thought. If people can get through their issues then so can you.
Day by day, the team noticed that your behavior had changed. You didn’t talk as much and you weren’t as chipper as usual.
You didn’t do your daily morning yoga with Christen often opting to do some light training instead. You no longer went skateboarding with Ash and Tobin, but spent your time in your hotel room looking at stats or ways to improve your play. It didn’t matter to you how much time it took.
You just wanted someone to recognize that you’re something; that’s what you always longed for. Each time someone said something about your horrible play, your parents were only being proved right. They always told you that you’d never get anywhere with the sport; that there were athletes much better than you. But you always pushed past that, desperate to show them that you could and would make it. Yet now, it just seems like they were just telling the truth.
You had gotten off the phone with your parents not long ago. Both of them screamed at you for a good thirty minutes, complaining that you had wasted their money on soccer. Complaining that you had no right to be such a bad player when they gave you everything you needed. Of course you felt guilty; they manipulated you to think it’s your fault.
So here you were once again, sitting at the hotel’s desk trying to get it together. You had training in an hour so you had to suck it up.
Before you could start getting ready, Alex, your roommate, came in with Kelley, Allie, Christen, and Tobin.
You quickly wiped away your tears and hoped you didn’t look like you were about to breakdown. Thankfully, luck was on your side today.
Alex came over and sat on her bed along with Kelley and Allie, “Hey kiddo, we’re just gonna hang out for a bit til training. What were you up to?”
You hadn’t really been doing anything since the phone call so you just came up with a lie, “Nothing much. Just on my phone.”
The women had started engaging in conversation, so you decided to just get ready.
Grabbing your clothes, you went to take a shower. Once you stepped inside, you tried avoiding the mirror all together, but it was so hard. It was right there; right in front of you. It was impossible for you to ignore.
When you turned and got a glimpse of yourself, all you heard were your classmates. ‘You’re too big to be a soccer player.’ ‘You’re never gonna make it big.’ ‘You’re worthless, whatever you do is for nothing.’
You blocked out their voices, but soon came your parents’. ‘You’re wasting our money.’ ‘You’re not good enough’ ‘We should’ve given you away when we had the chance.’
Those had been things you’d heard before; the last one always hitting you the hardest. Maybe they were right. Maybe you were just a nobody with no guaranteed future with this sport. Maybe you should just quit it all...
Christen had gone quiet after you made it into the bathroom. She noticed some of your odd behavior especially quick since she didn’t have her yoga buddy anymore.
The others kept talking but the more the forward thinks about it, your mood has surely been dampening. You hadn’t spoken to her about anything, but she hoped that you did feel comfortable to speak to her when you were having problems.
Christen speaks up as she no longer can keep this to herself, “Has anybody else noticed (Y/n)’s been acting weird lately?”
The other athletes in the room contemplate for a second before nodding their heads, already trying to figure out what was wrong.
Kelley had been scrolling through social media at the time and happened to come across some comments, “Uh, guys? I think I have an idea of what’s going on.”
Everyone in the room immediately snapped their heads over to the defender and crowded around her. Allie was the first to see and started reading one, “‘(Y/n) (L/n) honestly needs to be removed from the team. Literally anyone would be a better choice, like come on.’ That has over one hundred likes. There’s no way she hasn’t seen any of these.”
The women all shared sad looks. Christen was about to say something but you opened the door, having finished getting ready.
Everyone scrambled back to their respectful spots and you raised an eyebrow at their frantic behavior.
Shaking your head, you decide to go down to the lobby to be alone and hopefully clear your head.
Before you could even make it to the door, someone had called you, “Hey (y/n)?”
You sighed before answering, “Yes, Alex?”
“Where you going?”
You just wanted to go somewhere without being questioned for once. You understood that you were the youngest, but the level of overprotectiveness these women have is off the charts.
“No, I’m not leaving the hotel. Yes, I have my phone. Yes, I have my key card. I’m just going to the lobby to chill for a bit before practice.”
You had been through the exact same interrogation almost every time you wanted to leave your hotel room.
Luckily, before Alex could grill you any further, Christen stepped in, “It’s fine (y/n), just go ahead.”
You muttered a small bye and walked out the door. When you were halfway down the hall and heard the door close, you let one of your tears fall.
-
When it was time for practice, you had just been off your game. You were missing shots you normally wouldn’t, your tackles were messy, and everything was just an overall mess right now. And everyone else could tell.
Every word read or that was spoken to you were just in your brain, making themselves at home. They were right there, always reminding you what a failure you are and that you’ll always be one. They were there letting you know that your parents were right all along. They were there making themselves known in any way possible.
You were so close to breaking down at this point. Vlatko took you off the field and told you to get yourself together. You honestly didn’t know if you could anymore.
You were so close to breaking and didn’t know if anyone could pick up the leftover pieces.
Sitting down on the sidelines, you immediately put your knees to your chest and tucking your head in between them. You tried to calm down, but it was so hard. Your senses were dialed to 11 and everything was too much. You decided to get up and go to your bag where you kept your phones along with your earbuds.
You quickly scrambled to get them on; anything to block out the chaos of your brain was good at the moment. All unaware of the worried eyes on you.
In that moment, the team had decided to get to the bottom of this and help you.
-
You shouldn’t have expected to be able to hide this forever. You shouldn’t have expected to be able to use homework as an excuse to not hang out forever.
When there was a mandatory team bonding called in your and Alex’s room, you knew something was about to happen. Whether that something was about to benefit you was the question.
When you got to the hotel, you expected that you’d be able to shower then relax a bit and prepare yourself for the inevitable conversation you were about to have with all 20+ women on the team.
So when you did step out of the restroom, you absolutely did not expect over 40 eyes already on you.
“Nope.”
“Ah, ah, ah, no,” Ali said while walking over to you, dragging you with her to her spot and pulling you onto her lap. Your eyes widened slightly and you immediately moved yourself to the spot next to her.
Everyone was thinking similar things. You usually loved your cuddles and they’d always make you feel better if you were stressed because of school or anything else.
“So,” Ash said, “you wanna tell us what’s been going on?”
You simply looked down at your fidgeting hands and shrugged your shoulders. “What’s there to tell?”
Ali shrugs her shoulders as well, “Oh I don’t know. Maybe how you were off your game today.”
When have I ever been on my game?
“Or how you’ve been distancing yourself from everyone.”
I don’t deserve to be here anyway.
“Or—“
“Okay, okay. I don’t know what you want me to say,” you muttered.
You were panicking. This is overwhelming you and you didn’t really want to have much human interaction after training.
“Look, you don’t have to go into detail,” Tobin said. She was always chill and her demeanor relaxed you a bit. “You can just give us a gist and let us help you. Please, (y/n). We care about you and your behavior shows something is wrong. Let us help.”
And there was the guilt trip.
Tobin’s words started to make you tear up.
After much hesitation you decide to say something (more like mumbled).
“They say things.”
Ali takes your face in her hands and lifts it up, forcing your bloodshot eyes to make contact with hers.
“Can you speak up sweetie?”
“They say things,” you spoke with a tremble in your voice.
“Who says things?”
“Everybody. They all do.”
Every woman in the room shares glances. They knew you were still going to school when you didn’t have camp so hate could be extended there too.
Christen decides to contribute to the conversation, “You know what anyone says isn’t true, right?”
You shrugged again.
“(Y/n),” Kelley spoke sternly.
“What?” You finally snapped. Every word after this just spilled out of you like a dam.
“I’ve been hearing it for the past 17 years, do you not expect me to believe it! I see it everyday, there's no hiding it.”
There it was. You snapped. Everything was coming out. Your body shook from sobs and Ali quickly pulled you closer into her embrace.
There was no dry eye. No one knew of your home situation and now the cat’s out of the bag.
“(Y/n),” you were pulling your hair; the pain always grounded you.
“(Y/n)!”
“What?!”
Ali grabbed your wrist and gently yanked them from your head.
“You’re having a panic attack. Breathe.”
You were shaking your head, “I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.”
“Yes, you can.”
It took at least 10 minutes to calm down. The team gave you a few more minutes to regroup.
When you became more aware of your surroundings, you realized how much your head was hurting.
While you were hiding in Ali’s shoulder, everyone asked questions.
“What do you mean 17 years, (y/n)?” Casey asked.
“My parents. They say stuff too. I don’t wanna talk about it.”
“Okay, okay. Let’s just go to sleep, alright?” Ali always knew how to calm you down.
You nodded and hummed into her neck and fell asleep soon after.
From then on, the team was going to protect you. How? They didn’t know at the moment, but they were absolutely determined.

Anytime (Mal x Reader)
Tumblr media
Request: team x baby r, where r gets sensory overloads? maybe where they are at the stadium and it get all toi much for r to handle so they run back into the tunnel, or maybe at the airport?
Author’s Note: Special Thanks to @literaryhedgehog,
You know how talking sounds underwater? Like on a crowded day at the beach, when there are a lot of people around, talking and laughing, but then your head goes underwater. If someone is talking nearby you can still hear them, but their voice is muffled by the water. And then the sound of the water grows louder until the waves over the sound of their voice and all you can hear is the crash of the surf on the beach. Maybe before you went under you saw storm clouds in the sky, or the people standing unknowingly on the shore.
That’s how you felt right now, coming out into the stadium, with thousands of voices screaming at once. You heard them, but then their sounds quieted, growing dimmer under the ringing in your ears and your heartbeat pounding rapidly in your chest.
You tripped, stumbling into Alex, and then righted yourself, shaking your head at Megan who looked quizzically at you. You could see her mouth moving, but you couldn’t quite make out what she was saying. You didn’t know if that was because the crowd was so loud, or because of your growing panic.
All you had to do was make it through the anthems, and then you could lose yourself in the game. Just a few more unbearable minutes of pretending to be in your happy place and then you could play.
You pressed your thumb and pinky finger together, trying to focus on the sensation of touch. You remembered some college admissions counselor talking about how it would help anxiety before interviews. Or was it supposed to be the thumb and middle finger? Since you were becoming more anxious about doing the anxiety-relieving tool wrong, you decided to pinch your thigh with your nails instead.
You tried to focus on the pain, to let it ground you in the moment (something your therapist would scold you for later), but the sensation didn’t have its intended effect. It just added to the number of sensations that were overwhelming you, making everything worse.
You tried to remember your coping mechanisms, but the pounding in your ears and the tingling of your skin made thinking too difficult. You shifted uncomfortably, pulling the too slippery material of your Jersey collar as if that would help you get air to your lungs.
It was just too much.
So you did the one thing that had always worked. You barely remembered running back into the locker room. It felt as though you blinked hard and appeared there, leaning over with one hand propped on the bench, head down and breathing hard. 1 and 2 and 3 and 4, 4 and 3 and 2 and 1.
Since when had taking deep breaths been so difficult. You shook your head, trying to focus on anything other than the sound of the stadium above you, their voices loud enough to penetrate the thick walls of the locker room.
“Focus on me, Y/n. You gotta breathe.”
Your eyes snapped up to meet Mal’s worried gaze, not even fazed that she had appeared nearly out of nowhere. She kind of had a knack for showing up when you needed her most.
“I-” Your eyebrows furrowed when the sound came out as a wheeze. You needed to get back on the field. You brought your hands up to cover your ears, your nails digging into the soft skin right by your eyes, trying to block out the noise. It sounded like the stadium was going to come crashing down around you.
“Hey. Hey, hey! Look at me, alright? We’re just going to breathe alright?” Mal said, grabbing one of your hands and bringing it to her chest, right over her heart.
It thumped heavily against your fingertips, steady and strong. Something in you relaxed just a bit at the feeling. It gave you something to focus on.
“Good,” she said. Sure you weren’t trying to scratch gouges in your head anymore, but your breathing was still too erratic for her to be comfortable. “Let’s try breathing in time to a song. Every measure switch from breathing in to breathing out. In- I’m a little teapot, out- short and stout, in- here is my handle, out-  here is my spout.”
Your eyebrows furrowed with the effort it took to focus on the stupid song from your childhood (something you would laugh about later), but it helped. Maybe it gave your mind something to focus on, or maybe Mal’s steady singing pace kept you from breathing too quickly. But it helped.
With every measure, you felt your heartbeat settle. Your breathing became more regular, and the tattered wheezes had all disappeared by the time Mal was finished.
“Feeling better?” Mal asked softly after a few wonderfully peaceful moments of silence.
“Hmm,” you hummed, far too tired to give her a better response. You felt like you had run a full marathon, much less played a full ninety.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Mal rubbed the knuckles of the hand she had taken comfortingly with her thumb, looking at you out of the corner of her eye.
“People don’t understand sensory stuff. They think you’re just being Whiny, or picky, or overly sensitive. It’s just easier to pretend everything’s fine and try and avoid the stuff that sets it off,” You shrugged halfheartedly.
It wasn’t like this was a new thing. You had lived with it for all of your life, and it had been drilled into your head from the time you were young, that all of the issues were just something you made up in your head. You learned to just deal with things because it was easier than trying to explain it, and for the most part it worked.
It was all fine until it wasn’t.
“Do you have lactose intolerance?” Mal asked suddenly.
Your eyebrows furrowed as you tried to follow her train of thought. “What?”
“Just answer the question,” Mal’s lips were twitching. “I’ll explain in a second.”
“Yes, but I’m not going to stop eating cheese or ice cream,” You huffed, reminding Mal a little bit of a toddler.
“Okay, but like, you reported that on your health form coming in right? Y/N Y/LN- intolerant to most dairy products, prefers hard cheeses to soft ones and ice cream made of coconut milk or some other milk substitute, yeah?” Mal waved her hand in a circle, gesturing for you to continue.
“Um… I just asked for oat milk in the mornings. It wasn’t a big deal considering how long my will not eat sheet is,” you said, side-eyeing her. Was she trying to blame your sensory overload on dairy?
Mal rolled her eyes dramatically, half wondering if what happened today had anything to do with some of the items you refused to eat and half considering why you had to be the most stubborn human being she had ever met.
“Okay, but like. You can technically drink normal milk. It would hurt your stomach but you wouldn’t die, you could pretend everything’s fine and just try to avoid products with normal dairy. Right? But that doesn’t mean you should.”
“The crowd doesn’t usually bother me. It was just a bad set of circumstances and I’m fine once the game starts,” your voice was near pleading.  “It was just too many things piled together. Everyone was so loud on the bus, and in here, and I forgot my headphones. Then Sonnett just had to start that fucking hugging game --”
Mal cut you off with a finger pressing lightly into your lips.
“Okay, but you see! We can’t control the crowd, but we could have been quiet on the bus or had a few moments of silence before exiting the tunnel, or one of us could have lent you our headphones! I think Carlie has a really nice pair of noise-blocking ones. If nothing else, we can make a plan for you and I to carry out the pinnies after the anthem like Christen is having us do today! It’s just like how we buy a second pint of coconut milk chocolate ice cream for you and the other lactose-free losers on cheat nights” Mal said, grinning as she nudged your shoulder with her own, “ it doesn’t take much effort to help if you let us know you need it.”
“Thanks,” you said, smiling at her. “Wait, did you say all the pinnies?”
“Yeah, Christen saw you run off and insisted that I go make sure that we didn’t leave any in here,” Mal shrugged, standing and brushing off her shorts before offering a hand to you to pull you up.
“Doesn’t the coaching staff usually take care of that?” You asked once you were standing.
“I think she wanted to make it look like we had a reason to run back.” Mal looked at the spot where the pinnies bin stood before games, confirming the fact that yes, staff had already brought it to the field.
“I could just say I forgot my shin guards, Vlatko knows how often I do that,” You shrugged halfheartedly. It was a running joke that the man carried an extra set with him because of how often you forgot them, those and your glasses in case your contacts fell out.
“Cool, cool, cool. In that case, I will grab…” Mal looked around for inspiration. “My lucky hair tie? You know what, I will just grab my water bottle and we’ll say that’s what I came back for. Anthem’s probably over now, you ready?”
You gulped but still nodded. “Let’s do it,”
You caught her arm just before she made it through the door, and she turned to face you. “Thanks,”
“Anytime,” Mal elbowed you affectionately, and together you ran to the game.
