Makoto Kagutsuchi is my favorite character ever, so I decided to make a prompt list for his birthday month.

This starts January 1st. This blog will reblog any art using the hashtag #Makoto month or #Makoto month 2024 EXCEPT for nsfw. Feel free to make that but I won't reblog it. Light gore will be reblogged but with content warnings.

I will only reblog art during the day the prompt is due, but you can post em out of order any time whatever way you wanna do it. Idk if this will be popular but I wanted to give you guys time to get ready!

Yuma Month Day 16: Detectives

This was another prompt I got stuck with for a while, but then I had an idea! I can draw Yuma dressed as one of my other favorite amnesiac detectives! I even held a poll on discord with some friends on who it should be! Out of Wato Hojo, Shuichi Saihara and Kyoko Kirigiri, Kirigiri won! I gave Yuma some shorts though for his own comfort.

And that got me thinking.... Desuhiko and Naegi basically wear the same outfit with different colours! So bonus doodle of the duo cosplaying together! This isn't an excuse for me to draw Kokobolt/Naegiri, nope not at all

Spoilers for rain code (references most chapters in the game, especially chapter 5 and the epilogue haha).

Well, this is 2 days late but I wanted to post this before I work on the other days. Long explanation ahead: Dark purple is his past as Number One. Light purple shows chapter 0. Light blue shows the important characters who made a big impact on Yuma from prologue to chapter 5. Most of these are referring to a specific memorable scene.

Makoto is walking away from him but their feet starts at the same place to symbolise how he was created from No.1 but ultimately became his own character. He is seen in all three sections because he was involved with all of them (from the pre-canon to the end of the game).

This Yuma is supposed to be Yuma after the game (I thought it was odd that after everything that happened in the game, he went back to being alone and doing everything by himself) so he's walking in the direction of his past. Meanwhile, Makoto is walking away from Yuma (isn't walking along the line) because he learnt how to trust others and let people to carry his burden (which is why he's heading towards the memories of other characters). Since Makoto is also drawn in two colours, he kinda like a part of Yuma's memory as well.

Seeing everyone else's prompt for reflection inspired the Makoto part (HOW DID I COMPLETELY FORGET ABOUT MAKOTO BEING YUMA'S METAPHORICAL REFLECTION AS HIS CHARACTER FOIL LOL).

Finally got to posting it, but here goes day 4 of Yuma month! The prompt was reflection!

Spoiler warning for both the art and the ramble!

Ngl this was a struggle for my art life, 3 fully rendered redraws before this happened and I still feel like it was a struggle (the struggle is why it's so unfinished, would have touched it up more, but it's like almost day 5 soon).

Ngl I did end up copying other people's ideas cause mine were lacking but I'll give my view on this piece. Funny to think how much they reflect each other in such opposite ways. From Makoto being the highest in the chain and the loneliest in his struggle, Yuma is the opposite, lowest on the chain, both in Kanai ward, and his fake role as a rookie, but also having found a partner in his struggle to adjust. I feel like Number One and Makoto would be better reflections of each other in their role in the story, but Yuma and Makoto compliment each other, so we going with that.

(BTW why doesn't mask Makoto have a blink frame? Maybe he does but like I could not find it)

Is "Don't troll me online" an ACTUAL quote in Japanese?

Hi! Not only is it a thing, but he says more than in English:

Akechi 『マナー悪いぞ明智!』とか、ネットで叩かないでくださいね? “manaa warui zo akechi!” to ka, netto de tatakanaide kudasai ne? Please don't troll me online for this interruption, okay? Don't troll me online with things like "You're so rude, Akechi!", okay?

manaa warui zo—literally, "you have bad manners". tataku is a verb meaning to hit or strike. But it also corresponds to what we call trolling or (so very long ago) flaming on the Internet—telling people what you think, usually of them, in the most unvarnished terms.

It's pretty clear that Akechi doesn't enjoy it when his fans turn on him. He has a similar line on 11/23, in his post-interrogation room TV interview, better known for "the same strategy used in romance":

Akechi 実際、ネットとかですごい叩かれましたし。 jissai, netto to ka de sugoi tatakaremashita shi I mean, people often lashed out at me online and whatnot. In fact, I had to deal with so much trolling online and so on.

It's almost the same wording, except this time it's passive—netto de tatakaremashita. Essentially, in context, "They were trolling me all the time, and it sucked, I hated it."

There's also the week of 8/28 and 9/3, of course, when Akechi shows up at Leblanc not once but twice, having finally found somewhere people won't attack him:

And Futaba has a similar usage about a month later, at the start of the Okumura's Palace mission, in one of its missable chats:

Futaba 叩かれまくって逃走 tatakaremakutte tousou He's in hiding now that everyone turned against him. He's on the run from all the nonstop trolling.

This is another example of a line that loses its impact in translation; Futaba is not Jane Austen! Literally, she's saying "he's in flight from being tataku'd nonstop with reckless abandon"—the -makuru verb ending there. The public from mid-August onwards really don't like Akechi.

In short, tataku crops up extremely often, sometimes for physical violence (Makoto's "Do you want to be smacked?"), but more usually when people are being criticised or attacked online.

Yuma Month Day 13: What If

Now I had a really cool idea for this prompt! What if during chapter 0, Fake Zilch contacted Yomi via the intercom in Car 3 to tell him about the amnesiac detective and Yomi decides that instead of framing him, to use him and make him think he's actually an employee for Amaterasu Corporation. For a detective to actually stand in the way of his own people while never knowing the truth?

I'll explain under a read more but it is fun!

So Chapter 0 would happen the same except when Yuma wakes up and after talking to Shinigami, Yuma exits and Zilch speaks to Yuma, saying the job is done. Yuma would be confused when fake Zilch explains they're both Amaterasu spies and they needed to kill the others. Yuma is horrified but Zilch says that it's unfortunate he forgot and had to drug him too. They're done now though so he'll take him home and trigger his memories to come back.

Now Yuma doesn't fully believe him, he knows something is going on. Shinigami tells him to not speak out loud and to go along for now. Yuma tries to ask Shinigami about his past but she can't because of the rules of the contract. Her hands are tied and she doesn't know what she can do. She also doesn't open the mystery labyrinth as killing fake Zilch will put Yuma in danger, but she vows to reap his soul later.

Yuma arrives in Kanai Ward and Zilch informs Swank what is going on. Swank just goes along with it and Zilch takes Yuma to Yomi. They see Yakou, but Zilch just tells him that the situation ended in a tragic accident. Yakou tries to talk to Yuma but he is taken away before they can.

When Yuma is brought to Yomi, the leader is distraught that one of his top employees can't remember who he is. He gives Yuma an Amaterasu handbook to help trigger memories (yeah right!) and says he'll shadow fake Zilch and other Peacekeeper higher ups on cases and keep order. Yuma bows and says he will, not using the honorific -sama, which Yomi corrects him and says if he slips too much he may have to disappear as well. Yuma is freaked but tries to stay calm.

Zilch gives him standard uniforms that higher ranked Peacekeepers have and introduces him to Seth, Guillaume and Dominic. The others follow the lie and say they'll remind him of his old self.

Yuma and Shinigami make a deal to bring down the company from the inside, using this situation to their advantage.

The game would then follow the same things as before. Yuma would shadow Seth for the Nail Man case at the Clocktower and run into Halara (Who would still end up on the case somehow). They would be more hostile to him but Yuma would try and help them investigate behind the Peacekeepers backs. Same with the other cases in the game.

Yuma would also meet Kurumi who informs him as Kanai Ward's informant that he is not a peacekeeper that he has been led to believe. Yuma doesn't want to speak in case he is bugged but the two start trading in information via secret letters which they keep coded so only they can understand. Kurumi also lets the NDA know of this arrangement so they can work together on cases when their paths do intersect. Yuma hides these letters in his handbook which he keeps on him at all times.

Yuma would get a lot better at lying early on and be resourceful. Shinigami would also reap fake Zilch which would cause Yomi to freak out as his top advisor is gone.

Makoto would also try and get time alone with Yuma somehow and threaten him as he believes his double is now helping Yomi. Yuma however would somehow tell him that he despises Yomi and wants to see his downfall, he is just trying to navigate the situation he's found himself in and stay alive. Makoto still doesn't trust him but the two have an uneasy alliance.

Yuma would probably finally be caught by Yomi in Chapter 4, where it's shown that Yuma has been helping the detectives in the lab, as he's the one who got them inside and finding some of his letters. Yakou would probably protect Yuma as he is shot by Yomi and they manage to barely escape. Yuma would blame himself but would still solve the case. When Yomi is ousted the rest of the NDA would take Yuma back to the submarine where they reveal he was a trainee this whole time. Yuma would be relieved he followed his gut but still blames himself for Yakou's death.

Makoto would then knock them all out and then it would be the same ending probably where Makoto reveals Yuma's real identity.

It's not perfect but I just love this idea of Yomi using Yuma but Yuma still tricking him from inside the company.
