aaron rant
ok this is a rant no one asked for but i just wanna put all of my disorganized thoughts out there about aaron and the man my dude could've become without jesson's horrible execution. my grammar may be off and im not a good analyzer or anything, this is just a rant that i wanna get off my chest.
disclaimer :: i haven't watched MCD and i do plan to, and i'm aware of some things that happen but if you wanna share your opinion on anything id rather anyone would keep the reblogs spoil free
lemme start by saying that i love aaron. i genuinely love his character so damn much but NOT his canon. i love the IDEA of aaron and not his execution. jessica and jason did such a bad job portraying him- dont get me wrong i am not bashing them for the foundation they've laid for most of their wonderful characters it's the portrayal of them that gets me so ENRAGED. all of jess's characters have at least some thing going wrong with them and it's genuinely fucking insane. i don't mean what they go through in the series- as in who they ARE. what the fuck is a kawaii~chan? like god. i think so many characters in the series deserved so SO much more, especially aaron.
starting off with pdh s1 aaron. - i don't necessarily loathe pdh s1 aaron. i mean in here, he seems to have a personality than he ever does in season one of mys which is an upgrade i guess? a main problem imo was how his character always revolved around aphmau. i'm not even gonna choose to comment on the horrid age gap jesson's implemented in aarmau's story. i just hate that aaron himself didn't really have any other friend than aphmau and the fact that after they met, the series just continued to revolve around them.. and not them individually either- them as a relationship.
i think seeing certain instances like how aaron became lily's friend and stuff would've been important because technically, wasn't lily aaron's first friend in pdh? how is that just glossed over considering the fact that aaron pushed everyone who tried to interact with him off his back? isn't it interesting how lily managed to get a hold of him and actually became a friend? i don't understand why that was never shown because while students were scared of the dude because of all the rumors and shit going around, some kids like jeoffery actively reached out to him like we see in the ep where aaron asks aph to prom. he never relented to jfry's attempts to be friends w him and through this a girl like lily managed to be friends with him. i feel like something like this shoudlve been shown. i wouldve also liked to see a stronger reaction to him over lily and ivy's scheme. aaron obviously considered lily a caring friend and when he understood that they were scheming from what i remember, when he saw lily after learning about everything all he did was go "if ur gonna treat aph like this we're better off not being friends" or smt?? i think from what we understand about aaron over the series, emotional connections are obviously something he cherishes very much. so seeing him kinda like- brush the whole thing off and not be lily's friend feels so anticlimactic. idk how to phrase it. i know this was premature aaron and the aaron we know over the series is grown up and everything, but i still do feel like aaron would've had a stronger reaction to the scheme.
prob 2 was how after aaron and aph came to know ab each other being shu n fc, aaron didn't become full fledged friends with like ANYONE other than her. this felt extremely weird to me. we see him go to this dinner sylvanna planned and we see him socially thriving there- him cracking jokes and everyone having a fun time around him, travis and garroth wheezing over his jokes- how did this dude not become friends with them? i feel like they (garroth & travis) would've talked to aaron more and become more than acquaintances w him. a lil bonding thing if you get me?? mainly garroth. it's just weird that garroth never became a friend of aaron's imo. they were put in situations where they could've easily become friends. i know that garroth was jealous about aaron coming outta nowhere and swooping aph off of her feet, but he clearly got over it (during the time of s1 anyway, after that he went batshit crazy). they must've had one on one interactions during the dinner or prom right??????/ like come on. it's just weird!! this brings me to the fact that i literally don't see aaron making proper friends other than aph until fcu. like- aph is his only friend ever ykwim?? i feel like im phrasing this in such a dumb way- but it's just frustrating to see his entire social life just being- aph for a while. i just think garroth and aaron could have become friends as well, maybe even travis. and during prom, maybe even kaitlyn. we see aaron also being pretty mature and giving actual, promising advice to aph during the music room scenes. from this i feel like at some point aaron could have also comforted kaitlyn and maybe a friendship could've bloomed out of this??? this thought's just been sitting in my mind. aaron COULD have had a friend other than just aph. it just feels like his whole world revolves around aph and aph only until his family issues and the ultima bullshit comes around.
now in mystr s1, aaron is so FUCKING BLAND AND STALE AND UUUGHGHHHHHHH its actually so fuckin funny because mystreet season one aaron is relatively decent compared to his other versions *cough s5 cough. i actually do like s1 aaron's character. he's the epitome of chill- laid back, honest, communicative and supportive. he's a great friend to aph during her times of need, and during s1 he's the sanest character on the show.
but that's it. all he was was this friend to aphmau until the dumbass play arc during which they decide to go for something romantic. like his whole identity revolved around walking shirtless, being a chick magnet and a friend to aph. he revolved around aphmau, much like his pdh s1 self and that pisses me off so much!! he had no fucking personality other than being supportive to aph for a while. around the end you see him start to gain *something* similar to a personality, and while it was less than pleasant it was better than whatever the fuck was going on while he was only a friend to aph. it's also disappointing seeing him practically only gain emotions after developing a romantic relationship with aphmau. even during this, his interactions are limited to aph and zane most of the times, and even then he doesn't develop an outward friendship with zane- which would've been fucking amazing!!!! while they do start to bond, it's still like aphmau is the only one keeping them glued together while it would've been real cool for aaron to develop a friendship with zane and interactions w him that doesn't solely have to do with aphmau all the time. the fact that aph's brought him out of his shell is cool, but he's still ONLY friends with aph which is VERY eh. he may be considered friends w zane and stuff, but we only see major bonding stuff going on when it's between aaron and aph, but we don't see it with the other characters. it's jsut weird because everyone's known each other for so long, aaron;s bound to have grown closer w someone at the least- for example, garroth or travis. we've seen the unlikely group form during that one episode- aaron, aph, zane and travis- where they have a stupid lil immature game thing or whatever. i feel like travis and zane and aaron could've collectively bonded and it would've been super cute!! plus aph nudging him and zane to be more social as well- a lil detour to fcu where we see aaron trying his best to get out there and make friends w/ aph's adorable support- he has the perfect opportunity to do it during moments like these but it never becomes more than just what seem like forced interactions. like UGH. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. so. much. potentialll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just gone. poof. a strong friendship between aaron and the ro'maeve brothers wouldve been so fucking ack. sfryquoeuiwhiblforhgubhjfwe. litera;;y/. now i wpuldve loved to see tht1!!!! it's also just so weird that we see a drastic change in aaron's character from fcu to myst, in fcu he's so shy and he's trying his best to be friends w others and he succeeds little by little (we never hear of these friends again but ok.) and then in ms we see him as this super chill dude w hot gains sigma male or whatever and his only friend is aph. he was so much more expressive during fcu and while many events occurred in between, it's just weird seeing him not get out there more during s1 esp considering the fact that he has more freedom to. ill mention this later. anyway-----
one thing i liked to see was aaron break out of his cool character during the spectacle of zanemau, another stupid attempt by jess to get another boy to get infatuated with aph which thankfully did not happen.. kind of. id love to see people talk about how zane just heavily depended on aph as an emotional support system and was just afraid aaron would take aph away from him, a feeling of abandonment rising out of his own self loathing yada yada. . while zanemau is a cool ship, this whole thing was jsut extreenmly forced-it was obvious it was just to get another guy to fawn over aph. i hate aph's harem. i'll get off topic if i talk about how every single boy within a 50 mile radius of aph falls head over heels in love with her, but anyhoo. i did get off topic.. . . . so aaron breaking his character was like this breath of fresh air for me. when he's in the resto's bathroom, talking to the mirror ab his frustrations ab aph going all flushed and orgasmy over zane bc of the love ption that he wasnt aware of and how he should stop whats going on bc of zianna (fucking hate her ass), he seemed like an actual person lmao. i love that scene alot because he wasn't just this cool chill flirt(for aph), his feelings finally poured out in some way. it made him a full fledged character (for a little..). then garroth came in and talked to him and whatbnit (another wasted opportunity to grow closer maybe??????? idk) and they went back to the table . i havent talked ab how much i loathe this whole zuzu aph arc though like oh my god it mustve been incredibly uncomfortable for aph and aaron sitting through all that. i hate zianna so much and it was also mega annoying of vylad and the brothers to drag them into this bc he couldnt say no to his mommy. it was genuinely weird and so many things in the show are brushed off as comedic relief- things borderline crazy and worthy of restraining orders and jail. literally. literal kids watch these and may think it's normal bhvr when it isnt. but anyway.
i know that mystreet s1 was a spin off of mcd that just blew up and multiplied into other seasons and as it doubled prequels like pdh and fcu came to life. im very much aware of the fact that jess just developed the characters in their modern steads as the story progressed because it wasnt done something beforehand- mystreet happened to be a happy accident and jess didn't plan the characters out beforehand, including the plot (horribly evident from the shit that started from s4). they developed as characters in stages as the stories went on and that's just painfully obvious, especially when we watch the series in the timeline jess posted it. we see how aaron goes from the stoic chill hot sigma male to this uwu boy personality, which was what jess wanted him as in the end ig? it's obviously very weird though. imo, my opinion, she shouldve kept aaron's laid back personality. through this we could see him gradually grow and insert himself into aph's friend grp as well. we see that happen during s2 and s3 of ms, where he does progress in terms of social interactions- hes seen to be cracking jokes outwardly, he even has his own lil comedic relief spiels, becomes good buds with dante and stuff (which went just as it came from what i remember :[[[) and in s3 he becomes much cooler and is more involved within the friend group. he also seemed to be like this in pdh, like during the dinner as i mentioned before.
during fcu, this just. changes. his character is very... emotional? i dont really know how to put it. it's out of character. he's incredibly shy and relies on aph as a social plug. while in pdh he seemed to be less awkward w social interactions, aaron was 100x times more awkward during fcu. he seemed overly sensitive, and at moments its like he needed to be coddled. i did love it when aph helped him grow more socially, but we see that in ms 1 he has no friends. he's like this hot lone wolf (..), a drastic contrast to what he wanted to be in fcu imo (i believe this because derek was off his back now and he had the freedom to do have more friends and emotional connections like these is what he desperately craved- it's something so evident.) he wanted to have more friends and be more social. while this does happen in fcu, in ms1 we don't really see the results coming into place. like he becomes much more bold- in fcu he used to flush and blush at just hearing aph's heartbeat and in ms1, that one instance where aaron gets picked to play romeo and aph is like "you do realise we gotta kiss?" he just goes "yeah." in the most casual way ever- like it's just another tuesday for him or somethin. it's just a weird ass change. his character fluctuates when we watch the show in the chronological order and it's jsut so out of place and while i know it's no fault to jess ( i mean it is but part of it is justified ) it's still incredibly weird. jess could have prevented this by just keeping him as the character she initially started with.
and his last form- season 5. starlight. god fuck- this aaron was such a fucking baby. if fcu aaron wanted to be coddled, starlight aaron straight up wanted milk from aph's bosoms. he becomes this uwu soft boi- and considering all of the events that unfolded, it's still weird. yes, many things happened during their time at the lodge but it's just so fucking weird!!!!! i don't even know what to make of it. i just hated his character in s5. he stuttered every 3 fucking seconds. jason voice acted him so bad like oh my god im so sorry but it was literally unbearable. rewatching starlight was fucking horrifying. the stupid ass dips in the voice- god fuck!!! im so sorry its just what i think but i really hated how jason voice acted aaron during s5. i liked the fact that he was more expressive but he just changed completely- and i liked the small part where he felt like everyone wanted him to be something different now that he was out as a werewolf, but he really did fucking change and it did not feel like he was aaron at all. it felt like seeing a 12 year old find out about age regression and implement it onto a character like aaron's. it felt childish and just weird. jess couldve done way better with aaron during s5.
this shit was long and i feel liek i still have a lot more to say and when i rememebr ill jsut edit it on. no ones probably gonna reach the end of this but if you did, idk how u got so much time reading all this but i lpve you

aphmaus recent vidcon news is..interesting and yknow what, i know we are most likely getting a mystreet update, and i dont wanna be too harsh here but i fear that its gonna go right back to cocomau videos after she DOES finish mystreet finally, cause..come on
that girl is not gonna try and remake mcd for a THIRD TIME, that poor series ever getting a proper redo died as soon as the pandemic happened and her switching to brainrot content
and..my inner demons?...fuck..girl I don't know...like..did anyone even ask about MID at the last vidcon panel??? like..AT ALL???

Like truely I'd love it if maybe her finishing mystreet could be a great way to launch her into posting GOOD content again especially if shes showing her newer audience something that isnt colorful sludge, and maybe we could see mcd maybe in a different form one day, like a poorly written novel/j, as she creates even newer roleplays, like god she could maybe bring back void paradox!...but i also have a strange feeling that shes finishing mystreet with season 7 and nothing beyond that, just to wrap it up and get it out of her hair.
But thats just my opinion really, we really could get the good ol classic roleplays again, i just hope season 7 isnt getting rushed or half-assed, as much shit as i may give jess, i still want mystreet to conflude in a good and loving way, aphmau may not be the best writer but her series are exciting and engaging, and it would be sweet genuinely to have this new generation of aphmau fans get to see what aphmau and her team can do when they actually TRY and make entertaining work.
(plus I can't bare to have to witness every character from mystreet or mcd get further flanderized like they do in the cocomau verse, like...the only person who got a better personality was kim but shit everyone else is just assholes or are a pain in the ass to watch...or...is fucking both....COUGH aaron lycan COUGH)

STUFF I DIDNT LIKE ABOUT MYSTREET SEASON 4:
• ok but the animations here are great. actually tho they're so fluid and clear. Credits to whoever made them!!
• and now let’s do the real thing
• ok so first off this is where the actual plot starts. I know that some people were getting bored of the monotony of the slice of life episodes so they liked it. Again there’s nothing inherently wrong with having it but you have to remember that these characters most likely weren’t written to be in a plot and I say this because their personalities are funny and lighthearted. Their clearly meant for comedy. This also makes them redundant for plot since most of them a few characters barely have any development which is probably why like half the cast was dropped. im not sure how far back jess had planned the plot but needless to say most of the characters wouldn‘t be able to fit there. Travis, Katelyn, KC and the sk’s just dipped for the whole season and even when kc, Travis and Katelyn do show up in s5 their personalities really took a beating
• WHERE DID LAURANCE AND DANTE GO?? We never see them after s3. its probably because their personalities were too funny for plot but laurance was a shadow knight in mcd and since the whole of mys is so hyped up on the whole ‘mcd and mys are connected’ thing by all means he should’ve been there too
• it makes sense that since the lodge is jointly owned by the Ro’meaves and the Lycans, Garroth, Zane and Aaron- and by extension, Aphmau- would come along. it make sense that they would ask Lucinda for help- she’s a skilled witch and has been their friend since high school. theyre literally neighbors. it makes NO SENSE to being Kim- a girl whom they’ve barely ever interacted with and whom they barely know- to a place meant for close family to go to. Ok from a plot perspective yes Kim needed to be there but Aphmau logically doesnt know that yet.
• how does ghost/emmalyn even exist?? We’ve seen emmalyn and kenmur in s1 and they’re ok. not dead or anything. Yes I know that this is mcd emmalyn and she is directly referencing mcd Zane when she says that’s the only name she remembers from when she was alive but that raises two questions- first, how can both mcd and mys versions of her exist at the same time?? and second, what exactly happened between her and mcd zane?? It sounds like she either hates him way more than she loves kenmur (or she’d remember him too) that it’s the only name she remembers or its Stockholm Syndrome.
• I feel that since the plot demanded a ghost vessel thing that was the only reason Aphmau brought Kim. it’s pretty clear that Dante and laurance wouldn’t fit the role because of their personalities so she just remade an older character and changed her completely right down to her skin to fit the plot. her whole personality changes with it- look at her I mean she even becomes more open when she talks. Again this only happened because none of the existing characters could fill that role because IT WASNT MEANT TO HAVE PLOT
• no one likes you michi girl take the hint
• seeing liochant brings back meMoriEs
• what was that potion that lucinda made and which Garroth threw on Zane?? its clear that it cured him from the effects of the forever potion but the bigger question is WHY DONT THEY USE THIS IN S6?? Ok yes in s4 Aphmau gets freed by the power of love(TM) but that doesn’t mean you do that for everyone
• as someone who liked Laurance’s character I miss him :(
• ok there’s WAY TOO MANY PROBLEMS with Ein and his villain shtick. Ein is basically some obsessive werewolf yandere boy who has an unhealthy obsession with aphmau and hates Aaron. and the cherry on top is that Aphmau is his HALF SISTER. THATS INC*ST. That’s GROSS. What is it with Aphmau antagonists and not having a clear motive or backstory?? mcd Zane and Ein both suffer from this and it shows. there were definitely better motives to give him- he doesn’t have to be centered around Aphmau all the time!! And even if you don’t want to go to all the trouble of rewriting the plot you could at least make it so that Ein knows that he and Aphmau are related. Maybe he wants a perfect sister instead and he’s willing to go to any lengths to get her there. it would still be dark and serious but it would be SO MUCH BETTER than the current plotline. Also showing the contrast between his pdh and s4 self and then not giving any semblance of an explanation really makes it difficult to imagine where it all went wrong. yes Michael definitely had something to do with it but to what extent?? How much is Ein actually in control of?? Is he under the influence of a forever potion when he turns Zane, Lucinda and Aphmau to his side?? Is he still under its influence when he fights Aaron?? look I get that they can’t reveal everything but leaving out THIS MUCH and not even revealing it in s6 makes it very difficult to accurately nail Ein’s character.
• how is Aaron even revived?? is that Irene?? how is she here and what is she doing here?? Can we have answers pls. also it makes no sense that she saves Aaron TWICE- once in s4 and second in s6. How does death even work here if Irene can just swoop in and bring them back to life. i feel like none of the villains ever count as threats then because you know that a cryptic mysterious goddess who somehow looks just like your girlfriend will revive you.
• how did Aaron even survive?? No seriously how?? We know that there’s no service or wifi up there at the lodge so using their phones is out of the question. i don’t think Lucinda would be able to conjure up a whole medical team for Aaron. and they're on a MOUNTAIN. It takes precious time to get down from it. for context, even if they sent Garroth (since he’s the fastest) down to get help they’d have to wait for him to reach the village area at the base of the mountain, get a phone, call for help, wait for said help to arrive and get Aaron to a hospital. meanwhile Aaron is bleeding out from multiple gashes on his chest made at like point black range that are critical at best and fatal at worst. (his only saving grace is the snow he’s on which would help to numb the wound because its cold but he has like FIVE deep chest wounds and the snow isn’t even on his wounds.) Ya sorry I don’t see how he manages to survive.
• did I mention that I miss Laurance??
• Why is Aaron not at a hospital I don’t even see a ventilator or oxygen mask near him. Listen I’m not a medical expert but those gashes landed straight on his chest which means straight on his lungs and dangerously close to his heart. how is he alive. how is he not choking on blood right now. we know he’s bleeding out- I’m pretty sure one of the doctors even says “Mrs Lycan, we need to draw more blood for your son.” yes he’s bleeding out why is no one trying to idk stop the wound through pressure with a cloth or something?? (Note: it’s been a while since I’ve watched s4, so if I do get anything wrong thats why!!) also why are the werewolf doctors so chill about Aaron’s ultima eyes? like yes they’re doctors they could’ve been sworn to secrecy or maybe they work for the Lycans but Derek is shown to be really paranoid about anyone finding out about Aaron being the ultima. how does he know they won’t tell it to someone else??

Summary:
“I’m all for taking this outside. You want to take this outside?” Zenix shot up, shoving his chair back, and Aaron sighed.
“No, Zenix, I do not.” Aaron sounded almost as tired as their teacher, and Zenix huffed, sitting down again.
“Thank you.” The teacher turned back to the board, and Zenix quietly vowed to make the rest of the year living hell for Aaron.

When Gene tells Zenix to take Werewolf Class to try and recruit new members to the Shadow Knights, he goes in knowing he won't get anyone. He didn't want anyone new and he wasn't good at talking anyways. But when he gets mixed up with Aaron all of one day in, he quickly realizes things are going to go poorly. Between fighting off his crush on Gene, dealing with his poor family situation, tousling with the werewolves in class for the position of alpha, and realizing he might not hate Aaron as much as he should, sophmore year seems like it might just kill Zenix where he stands.

I had to share this. It’s a wonderful look into Zenix’s character, and I really like the premise. The way the characters are written is funny, while still seeming realistic, and the dynamic between all the characters is great. The universe created was really awesome.

Behind the Red Bandana (Aphmau Future Child AU) - Chapter One: From Wallflower to Troublemaker

I always used to hear those stories, those tales about the Ultima Werewolf.
They were all supposed to be wiped out.
They were SUPPOSED to be...well, dead.
I never could have guessed the secrets lying right around the corner.
It all started with that one day...

“Hey, Terrance?”
“Yes, Minnie?”
“Am I... different?”
Terrance paused. He smiled.
“Don't tell me those stupid bullies are getting to you again!”
“Ter-”
“They don't understand 1 plus 1, so how could they understand you?”
I smile.
“Come on,” Terrance said. “I need to read the story before I have to do my homework. Dang Ms. Steatserson!”
I laugh. “She give you more math problems?”
“I hate dividing fractions!” He groans.
We walk from our hangout secret place - underneath a fenced in willow tree- to my house. Purple and red adorned the walls.
My mom greeted us with a warm smile. “Hey Terrance! Wonderful to see you!”
“Nice to see you too, Ms. Lycan.”
“I just finished baking some cookies. Would you kids like some?”
“No, Mom. We're ok. We were just gonna hang out upstairs.”
“Alright! Be my guest, dear. I'll be down here if you need me.”
We walk up the oak wood stairs to my dark blue room. Terrence flops onto the red and black bed - my father's old musty blanket.
I pull out the heavy book we've read so many times.
“And he struck down to town with the rage like no other!” I say dramatically.
“And the light came way to a horrible darkness.” Terrence finished. He looked at me. Our favorite part.
“The darkness leaves promising to return, and those who wish to stop it must make a noble sacrifice.” We said together. We both fell on the floor laughing.
“This is so stupid! 'Sacrifice'? As if!”
“Yeah, nothing exciting ever happens in this old town anyway.”
“Nothing exciting, huh?” A deep voice boomed from my door.
“Dad!” I yelled. He smiled and ruffled my hair. “I didn't expect you home so soon!”
He looked at both of us with a big smile. “You know I met your mom here, right?”
I froze in shock. “Woah, woah, woah, hold up. You met Mom here? In this dull town?!”
“Hard to believe romance happens in Phoenix Drop High, let alone in this town.” Terrance added.
“You'd be surprised, Terrence. Just goes to show that-”
“That what, Aaron?” Mom joked from behind, surprising my Dad.
“You know what? Nevermind.”
“No! I wanna hear this story!” I pleaded.
“Me too.” Mom added with a smirk.
Dad blushed, but turned toward us. “That magic…” he looked toward Mom and smiled. “...can happen anywhere.”
"Oh, PLEASE!" Terrence scoffed.
“Very well,” Mom said. “You're off the hook this time, Fluffy.” She returned downstairs.
My father picked up the old book. “You guys still like this old thing?”
“Well, yeah. I wish…” I looked away. “I wish life were like that. The..story.”
My Dad suddenly turned serious. He turned, walking out, mumbling under his breath. “Be careful what you wish for, Minnie.”
“Ok,” Terrence butt in, “I've never seen your father act like that, and I've been around him for years.”
“I'm sure it's nothing. May have just had a bad day at work.” I said. “Come on, Ter. Let's do homework.”

“Have a great day at school, dear!” My mom smiled from the doorway.
I walked down the street and met up with Terrence at the bus stop. We quietly boarded the yellow bus and tried for another day, to be invisible.
Terrence laughed as we headed to 4th Period. It was just after lunch, when he made me laugh so hard the chocolate milk I was drinking went through my nose.
Rumors were spreading of a new student, and I was excited yet scared of who they were. I secretly hoped they were nice - not many were in this school.
We heard a noise up ahead.
“Your empty, ugly kind should do us all a favor, and just die!”
Terrence pulled me close to the wall and out of sight. “Minnie!” He whisper - yelled. “Bullies, 3 O’Clock!”
We were quiet. Perfectly still. We blended into the wall. We... disappeared.
I moved to get a better view of the situation. The three blondes who picked on us - we called them Right, Left, and Middle depending in the black moles in their cheeks - were standing over a blonde girl. Her hair was in a slight bob, clear white skin, and piercing pink eyes. She wore a grey hoodie pulled over her head, and a pair of ripped blue jeans.
“Shut up, you dirty blondes!” She yelled. “Give me my backpack, or else!”
Middle held the black leather backpack high in the air. She smirked. “Ha!” She laughed. She turned to Left and Right. “You hear that, ladies? New girl thinks she's a threat.” She stared down at the poor girl. “You...you are nothing. Just a small pest to live...to serve...and to die.”
She had Right hold the bag as the girl tried fighting Middle. “Oh, please. How pathetic.” Middle pushed the girl into the wall. She got down to her face.
“I want you to remember this moment, anytime that you think you'll be anything other than the strange alien that you are!”
SLAP!
Middle stood, holding her reddened cheek. “Why, you little pest! I'll make you pay!”
She held the girl up by her throat, back pressed against the wall.
I...I dunno what came over me. Seeing that poor girl...it just filled me with rage.
To Terrence's dismay I stepped out into the hall. Right noticed me right away. “Here comes the worm, ladies! And look! She wants to defend one of her kind.”
Middle's ears perked up at that, and threw the beaten girl on the ground. She stared down at her with a mighty rage. “Don't you dare think about moving a muscle. Got it?”
From her injuries, I don't think she could if she wanted to.
“Leave. Her. Alone.” I said. My fists clenched at my side. Left laughed and tried to push me, but I quickly stopped her hand. I would've been in awe about that combat skill, but I was just so full of anger at these three, I barely noticed, and hazily remember.
“I said,” I yelled as I punched her. “Leave her ALONE!”
I punched her so hard she hit the wall. The anger started to dissipate as Terrence grabbed my hand and the blonde girl's and ran.
I don't remember much about that. Just running and...and tears. I was tired. So, so very tired. It felt from one punch, all the energy from my body just...vanished.
“Minnie! Minnie, wake up!” I wake up slowly. Terrence is shaking me. “Thank God.”
“What...what the heck just happened?!” I say.
“Wait….you don't remember?”
“It's just all...fuzzy.”
“You punched Middle right into the wall! Left and Right ran away, probably to tattle. That was freaking amazing!”
The blonde girl was quiet. She finally spoke. “Hey, uh...thanks for saving my butt back there. I'm new here, and...yeah.” She quickly got up. “Sorry to cause you two trouble.”
“Really, it's nothing.” I insist. “We aliens have to stick together, right?”
She smiled. “I'm...I'm Rose, by the way. I hope to see you two around.”
“Same.” I say.
She quickly got back inside the building. Terrence turned to me. “You okay, Minnie?”
He started checking me over.
“I’m really fine, Terrence. I’m just tired.” I look at the sky. “I...I didn’t know I could do that.”
“Ms. Lycan? Mr. Ro’Meave?” said a snappy voice from above. My whole body tensed.
“Ms. Steatserson.” Terrence said.
“You two. With me. NOW.”
Terrence helped me up and I leaned on him as we headed to the principal’s office. I was nervous as he helped me sit down, and gave me a small smile. Middle was in the far right chair, and I in the far left. Terrence sat down in the middle seat.
Ms. Steatserson’s stare went right through me. There was something off about her. I started to sweat. Middle held her arm and cried, or fake cried, I should say. Terrence held my hand. He knew how I am around teachers.
“Now,” Ms. Steatserson said. “I want the truth, and nothing but the truth here. Understand?” We all nodded. She looked around the room. “I have a heavily damaged wall, and hospital bills to worry about. I am VERY low on patience right now.”
“Ms. Steatserson,” Terrence said. “I am sure that we ALL know everyone’s history here. Is this really a question of truth?”
“Mr. Ro’Meave, should I look on the cameras, or will someone fess up?” She looked straight at me. “Or should I have your parents come down and tell you off themselves?”
We all went completely silent. Middle spoke up. “I don’t see why I’M here. I’m the victim! She punched me into the FREAKING WALL!”
Ms. Steatserson stood and pounded her hand on her desk. “HOLD YOUR TONGUE, Ms. Valentine!”
Middle went silent.
“Now,” she said, “someone tell me, or I will call your parents.”
“I was defending a girl! A innocent, helpless girl! Diana here would’ve left her in worst shape if I hadn’t stepped in!” I blurted out.
“And, Ms. Lycan, how do you know this? What evidence do you have?” She snapped.
“She and her gang have bullied us for years!” Terrence yelled.
“LIARS!” Middle yelled. “To even think that I-”
“THAT’S IT!” Ms. Steatserson yelled. “I’m calling your parents! Clearly no one here is mature enough to sort this out!” She pointed to the door. “Sit outside, all of you!”

“ Would y’ spare me the emotional therapy? I’m short of cash right now, can’t afford it.” The smirk pulling on the redhead’s lips was taunting, playful as always – yet, somewhat, reserved. It certainly did not match the darkening shade of his emerald hues that silently were screaming just one word : stop. Some boundaries were not meant to be crossed. Not so blatantly, at least. He hadn’t been a kid since he reached six years of age ; childhood cut down to pumpel him into a harsh world that many were lucky enough through their lives to never even experience… So what was about Aaron that made the apprentice feel so awfully vulnerable again?
It was with a sigh that Lavi next changed the direction of his footsteps and moved towards the older male instead. Throwing his arms up for a single moment, fingertips splayed as to add to the spastic gesture – like a rebellious see, I’m coming! proper from the boy that he currently, definitely, for a long time now…. was not. Despite said fact, for some reason he still couldn’t help himself. Must be the air around this place, huh uh. “ I was just taking a stroll ‘round ! It’s a must in my morning routine, y’see.” With a wink, he let his shoulder brush Aaron’s whilst he walked past. A comfortable fondness that he was still getting used to feeling. “ Everyone was asleep, yer cute ‘nd paranoid son included. What are y’ puppies so scared of, anyways?” These woods were safer than most places he’d visited, but the wolf didn’t need a reminder.

The reply. while playful in meaning, had a noticeable edge with every word that passed the other male’s lips; which as well were tugged and bent in a painfully brilliant halfmoon of a smile. It was obvious to Aaron that what he was seeing and hearing was not the true image of the boy. Buried beneath it all he could smell it, lonesome and hurting was the heart of a child, fluttering it’s butterfly wings with every smile that was drawn upon Lavi’s face a big faster, badoom...badoom....if only some people could hear the short pause, less than a second long, pause that it would make. It was a painful silence that the lycan would not always catch if he were not listening for it, but ever since he came across the redhead there was something pulling him in to get closer, to ruffle the messy red locks, wrap an arm around the still widening shoulders, and to draw out an honest laugh from behind this perfect mask.
Stripped of all their masquerades, the fears of men are quite identical: the fear of loneliness, rejection, inferiority, unmanageable anger, illness and death.
Shaking his head, Aaron allowed the smile of his own to even out into a somewhat blank expression, his eyes still resting on the other male, but the warmth behind the hazel shimmered still brightly in the early morning sun. “Derek got up, thinking that you left without saying ‘goodbye’...the kid knows you’ll have to one day so he freaks out.” Shrugging his shoulders the older male only lifted an eyebrow at the gesture that Lavi made while also not minding the little brush of shoulders, such a little thing but it made a big difference to him.
Letting out a chuckle he spun on the heels of his feet, one arm was thrown across the redhead’s shoulder so that they were walking in a half-embrace there. “Don’t be fooled, these woods are filled with dangerous predators-” At the words ‘predators’ he let out a soft growl, canines a tad longer as the smile he was once again wearing seemed a bit psychotic.”-there are stories of squirrels that went for the man-owned nuts tsk tsk....not to mention the bunnies! One managed to bite off a guy’s ear.”A short snort followed. “Crazy what animals can do once possessed- but still make a great lunch.”
And as if on cue there was a loud rumbling noise coming from his stomach, one hand covering it with small pats, attention back on Lavi again. “Race you home? Can’t rist missing out lunch now, can we?”Without another word, Aaron was already striding alongside the treeline before diving in deeper, his silhouette disappearing amidst the trees.

Aarmau Isn't That Great - A Deconstructive Analysis On Aaron And Aphmau’s Relationship
This is a re-upload of an updated rewrite of my previous Aarmau analysis. The conclusion is the same, but this version includes more details and a different opinion on Aphmau’s character in Season 3.5, along with an extra addition to the conclusion.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I’m NOT trying to say “Aarmau is bad, so you should ship Garmau/Laurmau/Zanemau/etc.!” I personally don't care for those ships at all. This is specifically about how Aaron deserves better. Also, I’m NOT trying to say Jess and Jason’s relationship is unhealthy — I think they're extremely good for each other. I'm talking about the fictional characters Aaron and Aphmau, who while being based on them, are separate entities from those real people. Please keep that in mind.
Also, if you're going to comment “I can ship whatever I want!!! Don't attack me!!! No ship hate!!!” right now, just don't. Being critical of media is in no way hating on it and if you think a criticism backed with canon evidence is hate, then please go outside. Anyways…
Warnings for discussions of child abuse / neglect.
So, to start this off, I'm going to state something that is both canon and important to this particular analysis: Aaron was abused by his parents, Derek and Rachel Lycan (more by Derek, but I'm not excusing her actions either). It's canon and displayed in several episodes, particularly Phoenix Drop High S2, Falcon Claw University, Lover’s Lane, Woof’s Tale, and in the flashbacks in Emerald Secret. They left him home alone with no food for unknown amounts of time, they called him a monster, they guilt tripped him into staying with them, etc. This is touched on a lot of Aaron and Derek’s Aphmau wikia page if you want to read up on it, because there's a lot and since that isn't the main point of this I don't want to spend to long harping on surface level analysis.
In Falcon Claw University, Aaron is being kept in isolation and treating as a monster by Derek and the people Derek has hired to keep Aaron away from people. This causes this exchange between them in FCU EP.1, “Meeting In Person”:
Aaron: I can't say.
Aphmau: Huh?
Aaron: I can't say why I've been gone for two years without saying a word. It's a private matter and it's hard to bring up. I can't tell you if I’ve changed as a person, because I don't even know myself as it stands. But what I do know is that I want to be your friend so bad. I really did miss you, and I hope you can understand.
Aphmau: Can I ask, if you ever get the courage to tell me… would you?
Aaron: Yes. I would.
Despite her wanting to know about what happened, years later when he actually tells her she blatantly doesn't care about his feelings and goes as far to invite them back into his life without his permission or even giving him a heads up, after not seeing them for years, presumably since running away in Falcon Claw University EP.30.
In EP.1 of the Mystreet Holiday Special, “Aphmau and Aaron’s First Christmas,” when Aphmau invites his family over without telling him, and they have the following conversation:
Aphmau: I wanted to invite Aaron’s family over for the holidays, even if it is just for one day, or a few.
Aaron: But Aph, I told you what—
Aphmau: I know what happened. But Aaron, it's the holiday season. I want to forgive and forget. And maybe try to start over.
Even if Aphmau wants to ‘forgive and forget,’ she has no right to bring Aaron’s abusers back into his life without even consulting him first. She acts as if the world is centered around her, even in situations where it’s obviously Aaron’s business to make a decision. She even cuts Aaron off, not letting him finish what he had to say.
Aaron: Aph, is this really what you want?
Aphmau: Yes. Aaron… If I'm going to be in your life, I want to know your life. And that starts with the people who raised you. Even if they've been… not nice, at least it lets us take a chance to get to know them.
During EP.2 of the Christmas special, “Aaron’s Dad,” Aphmau continues to ignore Aaron’s feelings even more blatantly:
Aaron: My dad… [sighs.] I haven't seen or talked to him in such a long time. I don't know what to prepare you for.
Aphmau: Hey, Aaron… however your dad is, I’m sure he's fine. Besides, it's the holidays! Holiday magic is sure to make him at least somewhat pleasant.
Aaron: It's sweet of you to think that way, but—
Aphmau: Upupup! Holiday magic. Now, let's get back downstairs before your mom and my mom kill each other.
Aaron: But—
Aphmau: Holiday magic, Aaron. Holiday magic!
[Aphmau exits, leaving Aaron behind.]
In EP.3, “CHRISTMAS BOY FIGHT!” Aphmau says the following to Derek:
Aphmau: Honestly, you seem like a nice person, and I’m sure you are…
Aphmau says this while knowing presumably nothing about Derek, except that he mistreated Aaron while growing up and even now won’t spend any time with him.
During this mini arc, despite Aphmau claiming she’s doing this to ‘know his life,’ it never once occurs to Aphmau that to better understand Aaron she should simply ask him about his life. She disregards Aaron’s own experiences in comfort for the flimsy notion of ‘getting to know him’ despite never actually doing so.
This kind of dismissal of Aaron’s feelings isn’t a one time thing, either. She continues to do so in EP.24 of Mystreet S3: Lover’s Lane, “The Break-Up”:
Aaron: Aph… I haven’t been spending a lot of time with you lately. You have to have noticed that.
Aphmau: Noticed it? [Laughs.] I barely have! It feels like I’m always with you, considering how fast the days go. They’re going by a little too fast, too be honest.
Aaron: You… haven’t noticed…?
Aphmau: Nope! I’ve been busy. Oh, hey! Is that a cheesecake?
Aaron: [Sighs.] Aph, can we just spend tonight… alone?
Aphmau: Thanks, Aaron. We'll spend more time tomorrow. I promise.[Flashback.]
Rachel: We'll spend more time tomorrow, Aaron. I promise.
[End of Flashback]
Aaron: (to himself) Why can't I get myself to tell her about these memories? How I'm feeling... I just want to support her and see her happy. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
While this isn’t inherently evil behavior from Aphmau, she’s being extremely selfish here. She refuses to consider Aaron’s feelings over her own even when he’s clearly hurt, and despite (apparently) knowing of his issues caused by neglect and abandonment by his parents, she doesn’t factor this in to anything. Later, while apologizing, she admits she ignored how he was feeling. However, Aaron apologizes for it too, which considerably lessens the impact that this scene is supposed to have. This wasn’t Aaron’s fault. He tried to tell her how he was feeling and she dismissed him.
After the Lover’s Lane finale, Aaron seems to be moving on from his parent’s influence. For example, take what he says in Aaron’s Ticket (the season 4 prequel) EP.1:
Derek: I'll pay you a lot for this!
Aaron: ...Normally, I wouldn't listen to you, but…
Aaron only takes the job because he needs the money. This shows that he is no longer putting up with how his parents treat him.
But now, he's on vacation with them in Starlight. Post-Emerald Secret they got what they wanted back in Lover’s Lane: to force Aaron back into their life. Most likely because of Emerald Secret EP.17, where Aphmau and Derek have a heart to heart of sorts where Derek realizes 30 years too late he ruined his son’s life and makes a half-assed apology while Aphmau cries, and the Derek (and by extension, Rachel) decide that everything is now good and they can go back to being one big happy nuclear family.
Growth is defined by learning. Aphmau could grow and learn from her past mistakes in her relationship with Aaron, but she doesn’t. She allows Aaron’s parents back into his life yet again while he’s dying, and doesn’t once even stop to say or consider that they were bad to him and this could do more harm than good.
Also, lets not forget that in Emerald Secret EP.10 Aphmau openly admits she'd rather have him harmed than have another woman be near him:
Aphmau: What's going on?
Tatiana: We need him to wake up!
Aphmau: Why? What's wrong?
Tatiana: Our alpha is coming. If he finds him here, he'll hurt him!
Aphmau: Huh? What?
Tatiana: [Embracing Aaron]. Wake up! Please!
Aphmau: What are you doing to him?
Tatiana: He needs more of my body heat!
Aphmau: Oh no he doesn't! Hey! Let go of him!
Aaron: [Waking up] Ah, Aph, you feel so… warm… huh? [Notices Tatiana and jumps] Woah! What the— who are you?
Aphmau: “You're so warm.” What was that supposed to mean?
Aaron: Aph! You're here!
Aphmau: Of course I am. Remember?
He almost died, and her immediate reaction is to be angry at him for practically nothing. Then this exchange happens:
Tatiana: I wanted to thank you for before - for what you did in the forest.
Aphmau: What’d you do in the forest, Aaron?!
Aaron: I have no idea what’s going on!
Tatiana: I didn’t know men could be so kind and gentle.
Aphmau: What?!
Aaron: I don’t know what she’s talking about!
[Aphmau throws a rock at Aaron’s head, which he dodges.]
Aaron: Woah!
While it is understandable that Aphmau would interpret her words this way (we, as the viewer, know she’s talking about the wolf that Aaron rescued earlier, but Aphmau and Aaron don’t), her throwing a rock at his head should not be her first instinct.
Let's contrast this example with an almost identical one: when Aaron has picture proof of Aph cheating in Lover’s Lane (even though she didn't) he thinks rationally about the situation and firmly believes that Aph wouldn't do that to him since they love each other.
Aaron: I wanted to ask you about that.
Melissa: The picture? I figured. If that isn't enough evidence for you, then I don't know what is.
Aaron: I'm sorry, but that is not enough evidence for me to think that Aph would do that.
When Aphmau is presented with a couple vague statements that could be taken as Aaron cheating, she throws a rock at Aaron’s head immediately despite him verbally protesting. When Aaron is presented with photographic evidence, he concludes that he trusts Aphmau and that this isn’t enough proof that she would do something like that. (I’d like to note, I’m not trying to say Aaron should've distrusted her, she didn’t do anything wrong. Aphmau was in the wrong here, Aaron was in the right.)
In Lover’s Lane (which I should note is a season that’s actually comedy) when the topic of cheating comes up, it’s handled seriously because it is serious. Yet in Emerald Secret, which is an actual plot-driven season, Aphmau possibly hurting Aaron over a misunderstanding played off for a cheap laugh.
The idea of Aphmau trying to ‘get to know Aaron’s life’ from a self-oriented perspective like in the Christmas special as discussed earlier isn’t a one time thing, either. During EP.17 of Starlight, “Make Me Like You…” and EP. 18, “Choose…” Aphmau asks Aaron to turn her into a werewolf to better understand him. He eventually does, and Sylvanna explains why this was a bad decision to her in EP.34, “Cursed”:
Sylvanna: I want to hear your reasoning.
Aphmau: I wanted to turn because I wanted to understand Aaron better. I felt that something was calling me too… I didn’t want Aaron to go through something alone again. I wanted him to know I was there.
Sylvanna: That’s not a good reason to become a werewolf. Mija, we’re Hispanic. Someone doesn’t have to become Hispanic in order to understand us. That’s ignorant, and flat-out disrespectful to that culture. Essentially, that’s what you did.
Like Sylvanna said, becoming something for someone else isn’t a healthy mindset to have. To understand someone you need to listen to them and understand them, not simply emulate their experiences in an attempt to live it yourself. Communication is a core part of relationships. While this particular situation Aaron isn’t completely blameless — he did agree to turn her — Aphmau’s outlook on situations like relationships is deeply flawed. From inviting his parents over even though he vocally expressed discomfort to asking him to turn her into a werewolf, Aphmau’s outlook on their relationship is distorted. As shown in Lover’s Lane, Aaron’s attempts of communication often are ignored by Aphmau in favor of her extreme method of ‘understanding.’ The best way to get to know someone’s life is to listen, something Aphmau time and time again seems to avoid.
Finally, let’s discuss Falcon Claw University. Sit down and ask yourself: “What was the message of FCU?” Although others might have different interpretations, I personally interpret it as being about connection and relationships. It’s a season defined by the interactions and feelings other characters have about themselves and those around them, with a particular focus on the nature of romance. Let’s take this scene from EP.25, “Garroth’s Confession.”
Garroth: I really like you! I’ve been trying to tell you since— ever since the first time I saw you on campus. The feelings I’ve had for you since high school… they haven’t left me. I just— I wanted to see if you and I could try to be something together. I understand I’ve done some horrible things to you, but…
Aphmau: Garroth… what do you like about me?
Garroth: Huh?
Aphmau: What do you like about me, Garroth?
Garroth: I, um… I like you mind, and body, and— wait, that wasn’t meant to say, I—
Aphmau: Garroth… this hurts because I don’t want to turn you down. I want you to be happy, and I still want to be friends. Garroth… I need to tell you the truth. I’m not ready for a relationship right now.
Garroth: You— you aren’t?
Aphmau: I’m not.
Garroth: When will you be?
Aphmau: I don’t know, Garroth. Perhaps when I find the right person… I’m not saying that you’re not the right person, I’m just saying that finding the right person takes time for some people. For me that’s true.
Garroth: I understand.
Aphmau: I get if you don’t want to be friends after this. But—
Garroth: No! It’s— It’s my fault for bringing this to you so suddenly.
Aphmau: No, it’s not. If anything it’s mine for letting my heart close.
(I’d like to note that for some reason Aphmau insists that she’s the only one who should apologize in this situation, but years later when Aaron does something it’s fine for them to both apologize even though he didn’t do anything? Did she get less self aware as she grew up?)
Anyways, analyzing the nature of attraction is a common theme throughout this season. During EP.21, “Aphmau’s Date?” Betty asks Jenny about her feelings for Aaron.
Jenny: Betty, I think you’re overthinking this. Aaron is a simple guy who wants a family.
Betty: What else do you know about him?
Jenny: He likes Galaxy Wars, and… um…
This culminates in EP.30, “Leaving The Past Behind,” when Jenny and Aaron have this conversation:
Aaron: Jenny, I’m sorry for—
Jenny: No. I’m sorry. I’m sorry for the way I was to you. The truth is, after talking to Betty and hearing Cathy just admit to what she did, I realized that I was more so in love with the idea of you and not really into you as a person.
Aaron: ...Yeah. I could tell.
Jenny: I think I have some things to think about when it comes to love. So, if this counts for anything… I’m really sorry about what I put you through.
Aaron: I accept the apology. I just don’t want to go through that again.
Jenny: Yeah. Well, see you around.
So, with this in mind, let’s look at how Aaron views Aphmau’s feelings about him. In EP.15 of Emerald Secret, after being stabbed and shoved off a cliff by a mind-controlled Aphmau, Garroth and Aaron say this:
Garroth: How are you even alive? I saw what Aph did to you…
Aaron: That wasn’t Aph! She would never do that!
Garroth: Aaron…
Aaron: Aphmau was the first friend I ever had. She was the first person to speak to me with compassion. She saw me for more than I was… and more than I ever will be.
To Aaron, Aphmau was the first person who ever showed him kindness. He spent his entire life being isolated and treated like a monster. He loves Aphmau because she loves him, and he thinks that he doesn’t even deserve that.
This is not a healthy way of looking at a relationship. Aphmau has gone her entire life with people who love her. During PDH, she has her mom, Travis, Vylad, Garroth, Laurance, and more. But during PDH, Aaron has no one. Feeling unlovable/unworthy, self-blame, extreme attachment behaviors in intimate relationships is commonly found in people who were emotionally abused as children. Aaron and Aphmau’s relationship is inherently imbalanced because unlike Aphmau, Aaron has almost no one else. While he does form more attachments as he grows up (Agent R., Garroth, etc.) Aaron is consistently seen as a loner who is outside the main group. This is especially relevant in Season 1. Because of this imbalance, Aphmau treating Aaron poorly is never addressed by him outright because he, to some extent, believes he deserves it. As he says to Garroth, “she saw me for more than I was, and more than I ever will be.” Aaron believes that how Aphmau sees him as better than he is, and therefore what she does to him is justified in his mind.
Aaron is, much like Jenny was with him, is deeply in love with the idea of Aphmau. As the first person who ever showed him kindness in his life, he sees in her an illusion of stability that he was never able to have. Like he tells Jenny in FCU EP.17, above anything else “[He] want[s] a family.”
Aphmau, understandably, has a lot of problems. A lot of the ways she reacts to Aaron can be traced back to her parents, specifically her dad, and growing up without him. (For example, her attempting to hit Aaron with the rock could be seen as amplified by the fact that her dad cheated on her mom, so she’s sensitive towards it). However, the problem with this is while it explains her actions, they’re nowhere near justified. If you have trauma that causes you to lash out against your boyfriend, you shouldn’t have a boyfriend until you deal with these problems. She is still actively causing harm to Aaron even if her reasons are understandable.
In conclusion, do I think Aarmau is abusive? No. But I do think that these issues should be seriously acknowledged by both canon and the fandom and that we should all look critically at media and the messages it sends. Portraying unhealthy relationships in fiction is fine, but when relationships such as Aarmau are painted as flawless, that can be harmful.

New on Netflix: October 2020 Releases

Netflix was ahead of the game for October, releasing its “Netflix and Chills” horror lineup in anticipation of the Halloween season. Now the streaming giant has unveiled its full lineup for October, and believe it or not: horror remains at the forefront of its strategy.
The biggest release this month is undoubtedly The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited followup to terrifying Haunting of Hill House. That arrives on Oct. 9. The film side of things is where most of Netflix’s other horror originals reside, with Hubie Halloween (Oct. 7), A Babysitters’ Guide to Monster Hunting (Oct. 15), and Rebecca (Oct. 22) all making their debut.
Some non-horror originals of note this month include high school drama Grand Army (Oct. 16) and the Anya-Taylor Joy-starring chess story The Queen’s Gambit (Oct. 26). Aaron Sorkin’s latest film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, arrives on Oct. 16.
Netflix is adding new library movies like Fargo, Troy, and Gran Torino on the first of the month. Sadly, however, this will be the last month to stream the entire run of Parks and Recreation so binge accordingly.

Aarmau Isn't That Great - A Deconstructive Analysis On Aaron And Aphmau’s Relationship.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I’m NOT trying to say “Aarmau is bad, so you should ship Garmau/Laurmau/Zanemau/etc.!” I personally don't care for those ships at all. This is specifically about how Aaron deserves better. Also, I’m NOT trying to say Jess and Jason’s relationship is unhealthy -- I think they're extremely good for each other. I'm talking about the fictional characters Aaron and Aphmau, who while being based on them, are separate entities from those real people. Please keep that in mind.
Also, if you're going to reply “I can ship whatever I want!!! Don't attack me!!! No ship hate!!!” right now just don't. Being critical of media is in no way hating on it and if you think a criticism backed with canon evidence is hate, then please go outside.
Anyways, warnings for discussion of child abuse/neglect under the cut.
So, to start this off, I'm going to state something that is both canon and important to this particular meta: Aaron was abused by his parents, Derek and Rachel Lycan (more by Derek, but I'm not excusing her actions either). It's canon and displayed in several episodes, particularly Heartbreak in PDH S2, the entirety of his appearances in Falcon Claw University, Lover’s Lane, and in the flashbacks in Emerald Secret. This is touched on a lot of Aaron’s aphmau wikia page if you want to read up on it.
In Falcon Claw University, Aaron is being kept in isolation and treating as a monster by Derek and the people Derek has hired to keep Aaron away from people. This causes this exchange between them in FCU EP.1, “Meeting In Person”:
Aaron: I can't say.
Aphmau: Huh?
Aaron: I can't say why I've been gone for two years without saying a word. It's a private matter and it's hard to bring up. I can't tell you if I’ve changed as a person, because I don't even know myself as it stands. But what I do know is that I want to be your friend so bad. I really did miss you, and I hope you can understand.
Aphmau: Can I ask, if you ever get the courage to tell me… would you?
Aaron: Yes. I would.
This conversation is very sweet at first glance until you realize that it never actually paid off. Roughly ten years pass from this conversation to current day and Aaron never told Aph about how Derek treated him and never told him he was an Ultima until outed by Ein. While we don't know why for certain, it can definitely be read as Aph dismissing his feelings often. For example, in EP.2 of the Mystreet Holiday Special, “Aaron’s Dad,” when Aphmau invited his family over without telling him they have a conversation at the beginning:
Aaron: My dad… [sighs.] I haven't seen or talked to him in such a long time. I don't know what to prepare you for.
Aphmau: Hey, Aaron… however your dad is, I’m sure he's fine. Besides, it's the holidays! Holiday magic is sure to make him at least somewhat pleasant.
Aaron: It's sweet of you to think that way, but --
Aphmau: Upupup! Holiday magic. Now, let's get back downstairs before your mom and my mom kill each other!
Aaron: But --
Aphmau: Holiday magic, Aaron. Holiday magic!
[Aphmau leaves, leaving Aaron behind.]
She continues to dismiss his feelings regarding his family in EP.24 of Mystreet S3: Lover’s Lane, “The Break-Up”:
Aphmau: Thanks, Aaron. We'll spend more time tomorrow. I promise.
[Flashback.]
Rachel: We'll spend more time tomorrow, Aaron. I promise.
[End of Flashback]
Aaron: (to himself) Why can't I get myself to tell her about these memories? How I'm feeling... I just want to support her and see her happy. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
So here we're drawing parallels between Rachel (Aaron’s mom) and Aphmau. Not the best comparison for Aaron, considering how (as shown in later episodes of Lover's Lane), Rachel continuously manipulates him:
Rachel: I'm so proud of you for coming back home.
Aaron: It wasn't an easy choice to make.
Rachel: Nor was it an easy choice for us to take time off last week, but we wanted to be with you and Melissa.
Aaron: I have to admit, I was skeptical about coming back home.
Rachel: As were we. I mean, the thought of you running off again? Why, it would just your father and mine's heart.
TL;DR of the Lover’s Lane finale just in case you forgot (or didn't watch, in which case, you should, cause it's a good finale): Rachel steals Aaron’s phone to try to keep him from getting back in touch with Aph or his friends. Aaron finds out, and, realizing that his parents haven't changed and goes back home.
After this, Aaron seems to be moving on from his parent’s influence. For example, take what he says in Aaron’s Ticket (the season 4 prequel) EP.1:
Derek: I'll pay you a lot for this!
Aaron: ...Normally, I wouldn't listen to you, but…
Aaron only takes the job because he needs the money. This shows that he is no longer putting up with how his parents treat him.
But now, he's on vacation with them in Starlight. Post-Emerald Secret they got what they wanted back in Lover’s Lane: to force Aaron back into their life. Most likely because of Emerald Secret EP.17, where Aphmau and Derek have a heart to heart of sorts where Derek realizes 30 years too late he ruined his son’s life and makes a half assed apology while Aphmau cries, and the Derek (and by extension, Rachel) decide that everything is now good and they can go back to being one big happy nuclear family.
Narratively, it's just bad writing, but I love Jess, so I’m going to ignore that and take it literally. Meaning: Aaron, in all of his of being with Aphmau, never, ever worked up the courage to actually tell her about his parents - even post Lover’s Lane.
Now, there is a just as likely alternative that he has told her and, like in the holiday special, she ignored him, but if that's the case that would mean she's a hypocrite who, despite saying she does, fundamentally doesn't care about her fianc��’s well being or mental health. I'm going to analyze the first one instead, because if it's the second one she's a terrible person and I like to think she's simply flawed.
Now you might be saying, “But him not telling her isn't a personal thing! He just doesn't have the courage to talk about it with anyone!” Wrong, because he does discuss it with someone - in Her Wish EP.3:
Renee: How long have you been cooking?
Aaron: Uh...since I was young. My parents weren't always around, so I learned to cook my favourite things on my own.
Renee: Why weren't your parents around?
Aaron: They, uh…
Renee: Did they die when you were young?
Aaron: No! No, they were always working. They weren't always around when I needed help.
Let this sink in for a minute: we get more of Aaron opening up about his trauma to the (supposed) teenage cousin of his fiancée than his *actual fiancée.* Kind of messed up. He also confides in Jenny more than he ever does in Aphmau - take for instance FCU EP.17:
Jenny: What do you want out of life, Aaron?
Aaron: ...I want… a family.
Jenny: Huh?
Aaron: It's just… yeah. Some people want riches and fame, and there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone wants different things. But for me, I've always wanted a family of my own. You know, someone and little ones to love and care for… better than those who cared for me. …Sorry, went off on a tangent there.
Also, lets not forget that in Emerald Secret EP.10 Aphmau openly admits she'd rather have him harmed than have another woman be near him:
Aphmau: What's going on?
Tatiana: We need him to wake up!
Aphmau: Why? What's wrong?
Tatiana: Our alpha is coming. If he finds him here, he'll hurt him!
Aphmau: Huh? What?
Tatiana: [Embracing Aaron]. Wake up! Please!
Aphmau: What are you doing to him?
Tatiana: He needs more of my body heat!
Aphmau: Oh no he doesn't! Hey! Let go of him!
Aaron: [Waking up] Ah, Aph, you feel so… warm… huh? [Notices Tatiana and jumps] Woah! What the-- who are you?
Aphmau: “You're so warm.” What was that supposed to mean?
Aaron: Aph! You're here!
Aphmau: Of course I am. Remember?
He almost died, chill the hell out. Then there proceeds to be a misunderstanding where Tatiana says things that Aphmau implies to mean he has some sort of romantic affair with him in the forest, despite Aaron’s protests, and throws a rock at his head. Real solid, healthy relationship here.
Let's contrast this example: when Aaron has picture proof of Aph cheating in Lover’s Lane (even though she didn't) he thinks rationally about the situation and firmly believes that Aph wouldn't do that to him since they love each other.
When Aphmau is presented with a couple vague statements that could be taken as Aaron cheating, she throws a rock at Aaron’s head immediately despite him verbally protesting. It's played off as comedy, but seriously, it's absurd. It's also worth noting that Lover’s Lane was a comedy focused series and Emerald Secret wasn't.
