Traditional Authentic Armenian Meat Bread Lahmacun Lahmajoun is a round, thin piece of dough topped with minced meat (most commonly beef or lamb), minced vegetables and herbs including onions, tomatoes and parsley, and spices such as cayenne pepper, paprika, cumin and cinnamon, then baked. Sujuk is a various blend of spices mixed in with beef that is typically placed inside an intestine casing that has been washed with salt. Sujuk is full of flavor and can be shaped into links . One thing I really liked were the little Armenian Lamb Sausages called Makanek, these have a distinct aroma and flavor of cloves and other "sweet spices. Also a mixed platter of Chicken Tawook, Lamb Kebab n Kafta for a excellent first visit. Rarely do I eat at a restaurant twice in one week. “Late night eats” doesn’t quite mean what it used to.
Sure, it’s all relative. If you’re a stockbroker living on Eastern Standard Time, “late” could be while the sun’s still up. For Arizona, I’ve always informally considered 10 p.m. on school nights and midnight on weekends to be the cutoff for “late night eats.”
The pandemic, however, has altered the landscape dramatically.
Both predictably and understandably, local restaurants are closing up shop a lot earlier these days, both because there aren’t enough customers to make it a worthwhile endeavor and because trimming hours is a quick way to reduce expenses.
But while it’s slim pickings after peak dinner hours, you don’t need to surrender to fast food if you’re looking for something to eat. Even if they don’t quite make it to the wee small hours, there are some great independent restaurants serving fairly late.
Here are a few of my favorites:
Original Cuisine
This Chinese restaurant in the Mesa Asian District has undergone significant change and isn’t the essential destination it was when it opened in 2017, but Original Cuisine is still slinging some solid Sichuan fare, and it offers carryout and delivery until 12:30 a.m.
Here’s where you go for the stinging combination of fiery chiles and numbing Sichuan pepper that’s one of the hallmarks of Sichuan cuisine.

Beef and ox tripe in chile sauce puts up an aggressive start. Slivers of chilled beef with a firm texture arrive dressed in a spicy, salty oil that tingles and stings. The Chongqing-style crispy chicken is a very good rendition, with sizzling little nubs of deep fried chicken buried in a pile of toasted chiles and scallions. Or if you’re looking for some spicy comfort that travels especially well, the mapo tofu is a meaty, well-rounded version.
Of course, the menu isn’t all spicy, starting with a traditional kung pao chicken — featuring not the flaming red oil of the Americanized version, but rather the tart, caramel-scented punch of chinkiang vinegar. A Tianjing pancake — eggy and crisp and loaded with spam — is a fun change of pace. And simple vegetables like a choy in garlic sauce are always done well.

Tacos Culichi
It’s stretching my definition a little bit, but 10:00 on weeknights and 11:00 on weekends is fairly late as delivery and carryout go these days.
Besides, I’ll happily bend the old rules for a great little taco shop.
Tacos Culichi doesn’t have the underground cachet of some of its McDowell Road contemporaries, and the logo and menu design make it look more like a fast casual concept than an independent taco shop. But this has rapidly become a personal favorite and not just for the tacos.

I’m a big fan of the tostada de ceviche, finely chopped and deftly marinated shrimp tossed with crisp onion and a spritz of lime, finely coiffed with a dapper, scalloped avocado cap. The vampiros hit a nice cheesy crisp, the birria is a spicy, ruddy winner — especially if you’re using it to dip a quesadilla — and I kind of love the hot dog Sinaloence, plied with bacon and beans, big chunks of sauteed onions and no shortage of sauce.
And hey, the tacos are great too. A tight selection of meats, carefully prepped and chopped with skill, are full of flavor and tucked into sizzling, golden corn tortillas.

With apologies to the West Valley, Mijana’s newest location in Glendale is temporarily closed. But the original location in north Tempe is still slinging some delectable Lebanese fare, and on the weekends, they’re offering curbside and delivery pretty darn late.
Mijana’s lengthy collection of salads, vegetables and grilled meats are deftly prepared, and they travel well. Classics like a nutty, tahini-rich hummus, smoky babaghanouj and a thick, lightly herbed labne are delightful with fresh pita, and even better with a little grilled meat.

Makanek — small Lebanese sausages — are juicy and plump and gently scented with cinnamon and clove, and grilled lamb chops are similarly deft, treated with a light marinade and grilled until charred and smoky.
Kebabs are rightly a centerpiece of the menu. Chicken breast is tender and juicy, and kofta kebabs are lightly seasoned and served with turmeric-scented rice and a light, crisp salad.
The best part? It all makes for a fabulous leftover lunch.

It is heavily spiced with cumin and chili pepper or harissa (which gives it its characteristic piquancy and red color), as well as other spices such as sumac, fennel, and garlic. It is usually eaten grilled and is sometimes eaten in sandwiches or with french fries. Dried merguez can be used to add flavor to tagines.
