I spent most of my teen years with my family on the outskirts of a small town in the middle of the State of Maine. We moved there a couple months before I turned 13 and I went off to college a month or so before I turned 19. Behind our house was a field that ended at a forest that stretched a mile or soon one direction from town and width wise was about half a mile. In the middle was a stream beavers had dammed up to make a pond. Nearby was a clearing that I used to camp in. We were visited by dear and small creatures like chipmunks. There was also a log that a ruffed grouse used to drum on. I really loved my little taste of Wilderness. So I will try and share with you the sounds and sights of a Maine Woods. This magnificent sunset photo was taken on one of my favorite mountains and my favorite mountain to climb while I was a teen in Maine. This is Tumbledown Mountain in Franklin County. The lake in the distance in Lake Webb, (or Webb Lake). The peak just to the left of the setting sun is Mount Blue. This whole area is very picturesque. My family is not keen on taking hikes with me. I slow them down. The moment I enter the nature terrain, I instantly get transformed into an observer of the natural world around me. Forget hiking! I remember once during an hour-long hike I took over 100 photos of mushrooms. That’s 2 photos a minute. 🤔Obviously there were not 100 different types- just various shapes, sizes, colors.
