I’m Genuinely Confused By This/Bad Writing
Tumblr media
This confuses me because this doesn’t seem like something that Holly would say. In the events of The Hollow Boy. Yes I do think she would say it because I think that despite the fact that she’s extremely insecure and jealous of Lucy.
But I’m The Creeping Shadow. When both of these girls are trying to build a friendship and actually see each other. With the added context that Lucy has just been attacked. I don’t think she would say this and if I’m being honest it seems like bad writing
I don’t want anybody saying that book Lucy is ugly or unconventionally pretty. She’s pretty. She’s just insecure (I’ve got personal issues with her not liking the way she looks)
Lockwood: Yes do I believe he fell in love with her based on who she is as a person. Absolutely. Do I I think he likes the way she looks? Yes yes I do. The skull says that Lockwood is always talking about her hips. He says that she looks delightful before going to the Fittes Ball. He offers to take her through a couple of fencing moves and quite literally adjusts her stance by gripping her waist. This is a teenage boy that likes her appearance.
Holly: Despite the fact that Holly does insult Lucy by calling her ugly. I don’t think she means it. Holly does say that when she saw La Belle Dame Sans Merci it looked just like Lucy. I think that if we would have gotten The Hollow Boy in her POV it would have been a lot of inner monologuing about how jealous she is of Lucy, but also how she thinks that she’s so pretty. “Lucy was wearing this disgusting gray pajamas today. Of course she looked amazing in them, doesn’t even have to try. She can just walk in and look incredible with her beautiful golden brown hair and intense blue eyes and amazing hips.”
Harold Mailer: That character from TCS who worked for the furnaces. I always read him having a thing for Lucy
Tufnell: The client, from TEG who quite literally says that Lucy is pleasing to the eye
The UK Covers: That’s a pretty girl on those covers. Not in an unconventional way but in a “oh she’s so pretty” way
She’s a pretty girl. This scene makes no sense

So I sorta stumble into this very part time gig where I’m helping a older guy to clean out an over stuffed office/commercial space in a nice neighborhood in San Francisco. He wants to convert it into a gallery and I am obviously highly interested. But now it’s been a few months and it’s become clear that he’s actually got some serious hoarding problems. His original explanation was that he has outlived most of his friends and inherited many many peoples stuff, which is true. But, like, he really really can’t slow himself to throw anything out, decades old medications, junk mailers, random broken things.
I’m at an impasse. I really want to help him. I get paid to be there and help him. I would love to be able to help him run a gallery space where we don’t have to worry about paying the rent. AND! Among all his junk, he has tons of extremely rare gay magazines and books. Like I’m a freak and I can immediately spot a gay book and know that it’s worth hundreds of dollars, (because I’ve been hunting for them online)
there’s also another weird element where helping him is working almost like aversion therapy for myself. I am no stranger to hoarding behavior, and every time I finish a work day with him I’m compelled to go to my studio and throw out a bouncy of art supplies that I have not touched in years.

My dear Levi,
Hope you are well, my love. It’s been a few months I have last seen you. Is it selfish of me to miss you?
Our home has been lonely without you. The bedsheets are too cold. The shirts don’t smell no longer like you. My mornings are nothing without you. I miss you, I miss your smell, your arms, I miss lying with you in our bed, I miss talking with you.
I can’t sleep knowing you aren’t with me. I can’t sleep because I can’t help but be scared that you won’t ever come back from the expeditions.
So, please love, come back alive, come back to me.
Your love,
San
San,
From your worried tone, it seems my previous letters to you have not been received. After all, so many of our mailers ride out into the night without making it to the city. I wonder now how many of your words never made it to me.
I hope you receive this letter, if not the others. There is good news. We are heading home. The town we were in was hospitable, and the villagers pleasant, but it was not home. Not without you.
I write as the others are still packing the wagon. Perhaps by the time you receive this, I will be handing you this letter myself. What a surprise that would be.
I am well. I am safe. I am coming back to you.
Yours,
Levi

Case Study - D&D Winners Research
Deforestation is not a fiction
Tumblr media
Advertising agency – Strike
Production company – Fix Studios
This animation was produced on behalf of Greenpeace. The video's goal is to raise awareness about deforestation by demonstrating how intensive animal farming and the consumption of meat and dairy products are the main contributors to this problem.
Despite being computer-generated, the technique is intended to resemble stop-motion clay animation. The concept works well since it presents itself as a light-hearted and kid-friendly cartoon, but the sombre themes about the realities of excessive animal farming and deforestation is cleverly contrasted.
Gun Stats
Tumblr media
Advertising Agency – Alma
Ad agency Alma used actual data to develop several gun forms for the Change the Ref campaign, which was started by the parents of Joaquin Oliver, a victim of the Parkland High School mass shooting. This well-thought-out campaign aims to draw attention to and examine the US gun culture while reminding regular Americans of these often-overlooked or unknowable figures.

One star cookbook
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Advertising agency - ‿ and us
Design agency - No One
Production company – BlackBox
Deliveroo used actual, one-star reviews from customers whose food orders were damaged during delivery to create a spoof cookbook. These orders have been comically recreated by Deliveroo, who presents them as authentic recipes that you can cook and names the food in a way that indicates how it has been ruined. The photos that go with it are reminiscent of the type that you might see in an upscale gourmet cookbook. Seeing these ruined meals captured on camera is novel and refreshing.
Magpie Studio
Tumblr media
Sleepy TV
SleepyTV is a health and wellness channel that was created to aid weary viewers in falling asleep. The in-room or in-flight on-demand service was developed specifically for the tourism sector. It provides audiences with a blend of traditional storytelling, yoga, breathwork, and guided meditation in settings where it might be difficult to relax. The logo, which was created to be experienced in motion, simulates the blinking pattern of tired eyes. This small gesture instantly establishes a relatable and recognisable shorthand for the channel.
Tumblr media
Unity jumper
To celebrate the increasing global collaboration amongst visual designers, San Francisco Design Week launched CommUNITY – a group exhibition and silent auction hosted at its annual gala. Magpie was asked to produce a piece for the show that embodied the notion that we are all related and unified within the design industry. That two heads are always better than one
Tumblr media
Senser spirits packaging
Senser Spirits has developed a line of non-alcoholic Plant Spirits that are designed to uplift your spirits without impairing your judgement. Each spirit promotes a certain emotional state that is often associated with alcohol use. From a growing sense of confidence (Blend One), to feeling sociable (Blend Two) and full of energy (Blend Three). The story on Magpie's packaging draws a parallel between the transformation of your emotional state and that of a spirit animal.
Tumblr media
Imagine campaign
Papermaker Robert Horne was keen to get the creative industry's attention with the launch of its newest paper, Imagine. To appeal to a design-savvy audience, Magpie developed a marketing strategy that suggests everything is possible with enough ingenuity. They created a series of intriguing and inspiring posters using seemingly impossible illustrations.
Tumblr media
Gavin Martin vegetable ink mailer
Award-winning printer Gavin Martin Associates was excited to announce the introduction of vegetable inks and reassure clients that their exacting standards would not be sacrificed. The solution offered by Magpie Studio was a giant pumpkin with a first-place rosette to hold all the details. The choice of a giant pumpkin was effective as it was both relevant to what the product was made of and displayed its quality.
Tumblr media
Sarah Grundy artist identity
Sarah Grundy is a make-up artist who’s worked in film and TV for over 30 years. The objective for Magpie was to establish an identity that would attract the attention of upcoming industry professionals. They created a campaign-led brand that made the most of her ability to make the unbelievable believable. Every component—from bearded ladies to babies with tattoos—is a striking example of her talent.
Tumblr media
Bandido coffee
Bandido is an independent coffee brand for free-spirited individuals. Magpie Studio produced a design that uses the letter 'B' to embody the brand's disruptive, playful approach. The letter 'B' is presented in a way that alludes to a bandit mask. I admire this branding design as it shows how often the most creative solutions can be the simplest.

Street Art
Graffiti🍒
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Graffiti is art that is written, painted or drawn on a wall or other surface, usually without permission and within public view. Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings, and has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire .
Graffiti is a controversial subject. In most countries, marking or painting property without permission is considered by property owners and civic authorities as defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime, citing the use of graffiti by street gangs to mark territory or to serve as an indicator of gang-related activities. Graffiti has become visualized as a growing urban "problem" for many cities in industrialized nations, spreading from the New York City subway system and Philadelphia in the early 1970s to the rest of the United States and Europe and other world regions.
Modern Graffiti
Modern graffiti art has its origins with young people in 1960s and 70s in New York City and Philadelphia. Tags were the first form of stylised contemporary graffiti. Eventually, throw-ups and pieces evolved with the desire to create larger art. Writers used spray paint and other kind of materials to leave tags or to create images on the sides subway trains.[29] and eventually moved into the city after the NYC metro began to buy new trains and paint over graffiti.
While the art had many advocates and appreciators—including the cultural critic Norman Mailer—others, including New York City mayor Ed Koch, considered it to be defacement of public property, and saw it as a form of public blight.[31] The ‘taggers’ called what they did ‘writing’—though an important 1974 essay by Mailer referred to it using the term ‘graffiti.’
Contemporary graffiti style has been heavily influenced by hip hop culture and the myriad international styles derived from Philadelphia and New York City Subway graffiti; however, there are many other traditions of notable graffiti in the twentieth century. Graffiti have long appeared on building walls, in latrines, railroad boxcars, subways, and bridges.
An early graffito outside of New York or Philadelphia was the inscription in London reading "Clapton is God" in reference to the guitarist Eric Clapton. Creating the cult of the guitar hero, the phrase was spray-painted by an admirer on a wall in an Islington, north London in the autumn of 1967. The graffito was captured in a photograph, in which a dog is urinating on the wall.
Films like Style Wars in the 80s depicting famous writers such as Skeme, Dondi, MinOne, and ZEPHYR reinforced graffiti's role within New York's emerging hip-hop culture. Although many officers of the New York City Police Department found this film to be controversial, Style Wars is still recognized as the most prolific film representation of what was going on within the young hip hop culture of the early 1980s. Fab 5 Freddy and Futura 2000 took hip hop graffiti to Paris and London as part of the New York City Rap Tour in 1983.
Commercialization and entrance into mainstream pop culture
With the popularity and legitimization of graffiti has come a level of commercialization. In 2001, computer giant IBM launched an advertising campaign in Chicago and San Francisco which involved people spray painting on sidewalks a peace symbol, a heart, and a penguin (Linux mascot), to represent "Peace, Love, and Linux." IBM paid Chicago and San Francisco collectively US$120,000 for punitive damages and clean-up costs.
In 2005, a similar ad campaign was launched by Sony and executed by its advertising agency in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Miami, to market its handheld PSP gaming system. In this campaign, taking notice of the legal problems of the IBM campaign, Sony paid building owners for the rights to paint on their buildings "a collection of dizzy-eyed urban kids playing with the PSP as if it were a skateboard, a paddle, or a rocking horse".

Types of graffiti
Methods and production
The modern-day graffitists can be found with an arsenal of various materials that allow for a successful production of a piece.[48] This includes such techniques as scribing. However, spray paint in aerosol cans is the number one medium for graffiti. From this commodity comes different styles, technique, and abilities to form master works of graffiti. Spray paint can be found at hardware and art stores and comes in virtually every color.
Stencil graffiti
Stencil graffiti is created by cutting out shapes and designs in a stiff material (such as cardboard or subject folders) to form an overall design or image. The stencil is then placed on the "canvas" gently and with quick, easy strokes of the aerosol can, the image begins to appear on the intended surface.
Some of the first examples were created in 1981 by artists Blek le Rat in Paris, in 1982 by Jef Aerosol in Tours (France);[citation needed] by 1985 stencils had appeared in other cities including New York City, Sydney, and Melbourne, where they were documented by American photographer Charles Gatewood and Australian photographer Rennie Ellis.
Tagging
Tagging is the practice of someone spray-painting "their name, initial or logo onto a public surface"[50] in a handstyle unique to the writer. Tags were the first form of modern graffiti.
A number of recent examples of graffiti make use of hashtags.

I've been browsing second hand yarn on goodwill's online store, which functions sort of like ebay where you bid on the listing and they're sold by auction, so it's sort of fun to watch how much people will bid for things. Like I saw a listing that looked interesting that had a whole pile of silk/merino blend yarn, and it was originally listed for about $35 plus shipping, but now it's been bid up to I think like $50 plus shipping which I think is a bit much.
But anyway then I was looking on youtube for any videos discussing thrifting for yarn, just for entertainment, and someone mentioned facebook marketplace. I never go on facebook any more, so I had forgotten about that, so I hopped on over there to have a look. And there's a listing for a whole BIN of sock yarn for only $20!! With brands I've tried and liked like west yorkshire spinners and cascade, and other brands I've heard about but never tried like regia and shibui. Buuuut, only problem, it was listed for in person pick up in San Fran:( So, I thought about it for a while and decided to message and ask them if they'd be willing to ship it to me. And I used chatgpt to write a nice message because I was becoming anxious about initiating that conversation in a smooth way. And then I had to wait for an answer, which took like half an hour but felt like forever, but they replied and said possibly. And that they'd look into the shipping. So, I hope they decide it's worth the effort, and I can get all this yarn.
That sent me into a rabbit hole of trying to determine how much it would cost to ship a whole pile of yarn, so I've been looking at the usps website trying to figure out all their different shipping rates and whatnot. It looks like if they're savvy and ship it in just a plastic bag mailer, it would cost about $17, or if they go for a flat rate box more like $22. And honestly that would be fine, because as is, the listing had about 20 balls of yarn, and I'd even be ok paying $3 per ball, since each one would go for more like $12 or 15 each from a regular store. (And I'd probably have to pay shipping anyway buying it from an online big retailer!)

Wrote a letter to my Congressman
Dear sir,
I was unfortunately on the receiving end of one of your noxious mailers, as always eager to portray me and people like me as degenerates and predators. But what really caught my eye, in between the accusations that non-straight people are somehow able to Corrupt the Youth with our filthy ways, was your wooly-witted castigation of "CRT" as "divisive".
Now, sir, judging by the contents of the rest of your mailer, I do not believe you have even the vaguest notion of what CRT is, and, like so many of your stunningly lazy colleagues, you have allowed yourself to be swept up in a dog whistle operation openly admitted by the flagrant racist who started the whole thing.
I used to work in education, before the consistent Republican attacks on an educated citizenry made it impossible to survive as a professional educator. I still dabble in tutoring as my side hustle. Can you please explain to me how on God's Green Earth I am supposed to teach Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal", the history of the Potato Famine, "The Diary of Anne Frank", or literally any writing on the Holocaust without bringing race into it? Even if I charitably assume that the only racial issues you have a problem being taught in schools are the racial crimes of Americans (the genocide of the Native Americans, the Indian boarding schools, Jim Crow laws, lynching, Japanese internment camps, San Francisco's Chinese slums experiencing the Black Plague, the illegal usurpation of Hawaii, and, of course, slavery and the still-extant laws that allow Americans to hold slaves so long as those slaves have committed a crime), this sort of absurdity muzzles all factual teaching.
Since, again, I assume that you have never been exposed to this information, critical theory describes the lens through which one examines a text (text here, for purposes of clarity, refers to any dissemination of thought - recordings, writings, video, laws, and history). Any time you look at something and think, "Huh, how am I going to analyze this through my worldview?", you are applying critical theory. Even reading this very uncharitable email, sent with all due disrespect, you are analyzing how my conclusions have been reached and why I think they apply to you in particular.
Congratulations, you are a practitioner of critical theory.
From there, we get all sorts of fun adjectives to further narrow down our critical theories into what are called "schools". Different schools of critical theory choose to focus on different aspects of a given text to try to gain a more complete picture. For example, the feminist school of critical theory, or Feminist Critical Theory, looks at produced texts through either the contributions of women or their notable absence. If you watched, for instance, "Forrest Gump", and wondered if perhaps Jenny might have been a better, more stable person without the implied existence of incestuous abuse, congratulations, you have now looked at a text using Feminist Critical Theory.
Now, let's throw another scary log on the spooky fire. Racial theory has generally been codified as Critical Race Theory, which, being in a different order from other schools of critical theory, is certainly very confusing to anyone who did not pass third grade.
This theory suggests that of the general postmodern (another scary buzzword! Don't worry, I'm about to explain) consensus that works and people themselves exist on multiple axes and thus a wide array of different factors must be looked at to gain a complete picture, race is one of those axes.
Still with me?
Race, sex, class, and orientation are the four things that have been used the most throughout history to paint a particular group of people as "Other", and thus, undesirable to be. This exists both in the conscious (such as the deep misogyny of the far-right "manosphere") and in the unconscious (such as thinking that people who live in trailer parks are more likely to act poorly). Both the conscious and the unconscious prejudices of history still leave fingerprints, as time in this dimension continues to be linear. We can no more undo the fact that the first Black child to attend a de-segregated school in America, who was forced to attend under armed guard lest an adult murder her for being a Black child in school, is barely into her twilight years than we can undo the fact that marital rape was only criminalized in America in 1991. We cannot undo centuries of history by pretending it didn't happen and doing so only tells children that the comfort of some is worth more than the lives of others.
I can only hope this is read by a vaguely competent intern, but this Queer, Disabled Educator wishes you to know that she thinks you are either a credulous fool or a fossil who is giving a last hurrah of overt racism before you and the rest of your misbegotten generation kick off.
May you either wake up in the New Year or coast along quietly enough to not do too much lasting harm to our future civilization.
Most cordially and thoroughly disgusted,
