Hi~
I saw your post about how lolita fashion (and ads for it) have changed in the last few years, especially for Angelic Pretty, and I agree completely!
I think the lack of creative ads these days might be b/c Gothic & Lolita Bible isn't around anymore? (cries) and Kera went purely digital ages ago, I don't know if it's even still around (I should have kept my old Kera magazines). But I remember how I always used to look forward to seeing the clothes and layouts that were featured in the new issues of each magazine.
My favorite when I first got into lolita was from the Wedding issue of the English edition of GLB; a model for Baby was wearing a lovely, tulip print skirt (or was it the jsk?) in blue, holding a parasol and sitting at a cafe table. Something about her looked so sweet and simple; I wanted to be a lolita just like that!
The models in the magazines always looked like they were happy or having fun, which I think is part of what made me want certain dresses or blouses. In AP's current ads, the model just looks... kinda sad and pouty and bored. I've noticed that for a lot of their dresses, they've been skimping on the lace, frills, and ribbons, and there's no more cute hair styles either! Meanwhile, wasn't it AP that brought lolita from old school to New School / OTT sweet when they had models wearing pastel pink / blue wigs for their Mermaid Symphony (iirc) photoshoot back in 2007?
On a different, but kinda related note, I've noticed that in the past 5 years or so AP has been making a lot of dresses with ridiculously high waists.... also so many sack dresses (I know they started doing this back in like 2012 or so with that polka-dot M&M print dress)

i'm always glad to have some feedback when i post rambles and thoughts on things. i never expect it, so thank you for your input! it's also comforting to know others feel the same way.
i agree that without as many publications in general (especially physical) there's less of a reason to put as much effort into details, like the magazine spreads that were commonly done for example. most people get information on releases online these days, making physical catalogs a bit obsolete.. aside from collectors. i greatly miss all of the graphics and how inspirational everything felt back then, especially the little PNG pictures of items in catalogs.
you're completely right about pictures from GLB's and other magazines looking generally "happier" and more like daily life sort of pictures, like the one in the cafe you mention. that aspect of it appealed greatly to lifestyle lolitas! seeing a dress pictured in a "real life" situation rather than just a plain white background photoshoot picture makes a huge difference. it brings it to life, and makes it a lot easier to see yourself wearing it.
i think a big change in marketing is that AP doesn't cater as much to lifestylers.. and lolitas who are very much interested in the fashion beyond a surface level and see them as more than just clothes. all of the photos now actually feel like advertisements, when they used to also be appealing from a photography perspective. like they're only trying to sell you a product and not an experience, even if only visual. for me, that takes away from it a lot.. it almost feels as though that sense of community, and the acknowledgement that lolita is a subculture, is dwindling.
plus, it's definitely more than just presentation that's changed as you said. i feel as though the designs AP offers have been super uninspired compared to old releases. not as many details, not as much custom lace, and the general silhouettes becoming a bit lazy.. tons more, but i could go on for days. even the revamp and progression of the lyrical bunny mascot has felt a bit soulless. very sad to see, because i do agree that they were the brand to introduce OTT sweet in a revolutionary way.
as much as i gripe about old vs new AP changes, the positive side is that we can still look back fondly on the old era!
and no problem at all! it was nice to hear another perspective on this. ^^

Timeline: Part 9 - December 1-10 2017

December starts out strong with a daily bombardment of tons of stories about Meghan and/or Harry. Their PR backs off in the middle of the month, but only barely. Luckily for us, there is salvation: Meghan gets her first, second, third, and fourth dose of royal criticism.
Like I mentioned in the November 2017 timeline, this month sees Meghan pulling her support from Star Magazine, US Weekly, and E Online. People Magazine begins to earn her loyalty instead.
Ok, apparently I exceeded the limit of links that can be in a Tumblr post. the December edition is going to be split up into smaller segments. I've got a solution for how to fix this going forward, but it's going to take some time to figure out how to implement it.

Note: December 2 is a Saturday and December 3 is a Sunday. How nice Meghan's PR gave us a break for the weekend. But don't worry...the bombardment is back!

I consider them more than my virtual friends, they are my virtual sisters considering that I talk to most of them almost everyday and they make me so happy and they also make my stay in the mostly negative social space bearable.
To tell a little history, we connected virtually because of one person who goes by the name of Taylor Zakhar Perez. It's still surreal to me that one person could bring you a virtual family that you could love and appreciate with your whole heart and soul.

The basis for this photo was found in the March 2001 edition of AIRPOWER magazine. The North American A-5 Vigilante was an American carrier-based supersonic bomber designed and built by North American Aviation for the United States Navy. It set several world records, including long-distance speed and altitude records. Prior to 1962 unification of Navy and Air Force designations, it was designated the A3J Vigilante. The aircraft only replaced the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior as the Navy's primary nuclear-strike aircraft briefly, however its RA-5C tactical strike reconnaissance variant saw extensive service during the Vietnam War. The reconnaissance version of the Vigilante, the RA-5C, had slightly greater wing area and added a long canoe-shaped fairing under the fuselage for a multi-sensor reconnaissance pack. This added an APD-7 side-looking airborne radar (SLAR), AAS-21 infrared line scanner, and camera packs, as well as improved electronic countermeasures. An AN/ALQ-61 electronic intelligence system could also be carried. The RA-5C retained the AN/ASB-12 bombing system, and could, in theory, carry weapons, although it never did in service. Later-build RA-5Cs had more powerful J79-10 engines with afterburning thrust of 17,900 lbf (80 kN). The reconnaissance Vigilante weighed almost five tons more than the strike version with almost the same thrust and an only modestly enlarged wing. These changes reduced its acceleration and climb rate, though it remained fast in level flight.

Ooh, this one's fun! I already make a ton of magazine cover edits. So I think I already know.
Vogue: Would have to be Lorraine. She's already been featured in it many times. But she's the most fashion-based royal, not even including her fashion house, Vandeleur.
Sports Illustrated: Dorian would most likely be on Sports Illustrated. I haven't shown it, but he played polo all throughout his college and high school years. An honorable mention would be Florentia as well. She's surprisingly a sporty person.
Time: Queen Fiona would be on time. She's an influential leader, but it hasn't really been focused on yet in the story. we'll get there when we get there!
People: Florentia might be in People magazine. Although it wouldn't be a sit-down photoshoot cover, it would be more so from paparazzi photos.
Forbes: Alina would be on Forbes. The Sokolovs are a wealthy family. and not only do they have political power, but they are also heavily invested in the business industry.
Womens Health: Duchess Tyrell would be on the cover for this one. She has been interested in many aspects of the public health system. and is a patron of women's specialty charities alone. It is her passion.
Men's Health: King Liam might be on Men's Health. Mainly because so many people are interested in the fact that he's aging like fine wine!
US Weekly: Florentia dawns the covers frequently. Because the media always has something to say about her. It's mainly for gossip and rumors. As she has one of the most famous faces in their world. and is a part of such an influential family.

the rumors are all true...your nearest and dearest indie rock power trio is putting out it's third full length record. we've completed the recording and mixing in may, and it was mastered in june. we are in the final stretch of completing all the fine details in preparation for manufacturing, all to get this baby to you as soon as humanly possible. current live favorites such as 'turn it on', 'snowflake', and 'green apple' are featured, alongside a whole bunch of new-ish songs. some extra treats that you will find when you unwrap it are interesting instrumentation (like syth and organ and...can't say any more but we can tell you there is still no bass guitar!), guest musicians and even some cover songs. but trust us when we say this is a pop record that will rock your world, with sonic twists thrown in to make you warm and fuzzy all over. we are self-releasing this one on our own pristine indigo imprint. listen for it on the radio and lookout for a record release party to knock your socks off this fall.

also, we have added exclusive new bob colby photos to our pics gallery page. in case you are wondering, bob is responsible for applying all the special visual effects on the shots, and we really appreciate all the extra time and effort he puts into his work. he's got quite a keen artistic eye and they came out great. thank you bob!

Avon Catalog (1979) Scans
I have a lot of fun revisiting old magazines and catalogs, as they're such time capsules into old trends. I have quite a few magazines and catalogs that I want to scan! Here is one of my handful of old Avon catalogs from the 70s!
Now, I have to lead off with stating the fact that I do not support MLMs at all.
MLM stands for multi-level-marketing. There are tons of companies, such as Avon, that run on this “business model”. They operate on a structure of people enrolling into teams to sell products to earn commission. In reality, they are essentially pyramid schemes, and most people involved in these “companies” end up losing large amounts of money.
You can read more about the impact of MLM companies and the damage they do here. I just wanted to make it known that I am aware Avon is an MLM company. Outside of scanning these catalogs for archival reasons, I do not support Avon (or MLMs in general) as a business.
I am scanning these catalogs because I find them (and just all catalogs in general) to be interesting time capsules into the types of products available for purchase at different points in time. Okay, now that that’s said and done, I wanted to share some scans from this catalog!
I already showed off the front cover, promoting some kind of perfumed talc powder spray. Talc powders used to be a huge beauty item.
The back cover is promoting a deal on shampoo. 88 cents?! That’s a steal in today’s money…but probably even back then, too.
I couldn't find an exact month for this catalog. The identifiers are Campaign 15 from 1979. Going by the listed date of price expiration on July 22nd, I'm guessing this catalog was distributed sometime in the first half of the year. Or maybe a month or few weeks before July 22nd.
I did edit out the address and phone number of Miss Nancy, for her privacy. I did leave her first name because I personally just love knowing that items once belonged to someone. Does that make sense?
Like, I wonder what Miss Nancy was like. Was she young in 1979? Was she old? A mother? A wife? Do you think she ordered any of the items from this catalog? If she did, did she enjoy them? Or think they were absolute garbage?
I guess we will never know. But I think it is nice to know that there was a Miss Nancy back in the day, excitedly waiting for her newest Avon catalog. Or maybe she was annoyed to receive the catalog because she forgot to cancel her subscription or membership.
Either way, now I (and you!) get to view this catalog that once belonged to Miss Nancy.

Here are some of my favorite highlights of the catalog. Most of them are model photos, simply because it’s such a treat to me to see photos of people in 70s fashion and makeup. I’ll include some product pages as well though!

Let’s start with jewelry related scans!
This couple photo is just…so sweet to me. I know it’s an advertisement, but I love how he is looking at her, and how she is looking at us. I actually really love the jewelry advertised, too. I’d totally pick up a bracelet if I could!
Same goes for this leaf necklace and earrings set.
And these bee earrings.
And this butterfly necklace.
These models are SO beautiful and stunning. There is definitely a crazy amount of editing on them, but it’s kind of charming to see this old fashioned “glamour” style again.
Lastly, here is a page of “teen” jewelry.
Sad to say, not really a fan! They look rather cheap. It’s a bummer because most of the jewelry we just saw that was aimed for the adult women look quite pretty and of decent quality.

Let’s move on to some scans from the makeup section!
As much as I love the “swatches” edited on the sides of these eyeshadow pencils, I think I’d have to pass on these.
The pink and brown ones look pretty nice in the photos, but the poor blues and greens look a mess to me. Maybe they were better in person? Perhaps for $2.99 I’d be willing to give them a shot.
Here are a couple model photos I like from the makeup section of the catalog.
Love her dress, hair, and choker! And the bunny, of course. This picture goes along with different colors of lipstick and nail polish. I actually really do like her nails now that I look at them. The colors offered aren’t bad at all, even if they are mostly red.
So beautiful! Can’t be a 70s pic without a daisy. Her blouse is so cute, it’s something I’d totally gravitate towards in a store.
Here’s a page of some flavored chapsticks.
I’m such a sucker for flavored chapsticks, I’d buy all these in a heartbeat! Well…maybe not the chocolate one. Never been a fan of chocolate flavored/scented cosmetics.
Lastly, here is an assorted cosmetics page.
The colors of the potted eyeshadow intrigue me. It seems like the trend was all reds, pinks, and peach tones for nails and lips, with bold blues and greens for eyeshadow. That’s my take away from this specific catalog. I kinda like it though!

One thing I KNOW Avon was (is?) well known for are their cologne and perfume decanters. At least, vintage Avon was. I’m not sure if Avon currently still sells them. They seem like such an old trend, but I know they are still considered collector’s items today.
This catalog has quite a few pages dedicated to them.
Like this horse one!
Gotta say, I was a bit surprised when I flipped to this spread. It is actually kind of cute though, if you’re into horses. And only $4.99! If I was a horse girl, I’d definitely consider it.

Gotta say, the Little Burro decanter is SO cute. It’s tempting me. As is the Sweet Tooth Terrier. Remember when that was a thing in cartoons and tv shows? Wrapping a bandage like that around your head and jaw when your tooth hurt?
I think it was to hold an ice pack or medicine against your jaw/teeth so your hands were free. Funnily enough, I googled it real quick and found this thread, from AR15.com (???) of all places, discussing this. I just had to include this because it is so funny to me.

I do love that classical lady and the watering pail decanters. I can see why these became collectible items, I kinda want a couple for myself after looking at these!

The caption is funny out of context. Sweet Honesty is an Avon fragrance. Some of the decanters shown earlier come with this scent of perfume in them. But I also think it works as a good relationship quote.
Oh, to be this woman in a nice, warm bath.
Why does that water look so nice! Why is that bathtub SO BIG?! I feel like I'm missing out.
Or to be this woman, pouring water on herself with a giant shell.
Bathing has really gone downhill, huh? Where is MY giant shell bathing pitcher?!
And finally, I saved the best for last. Check out this guy from the men’s spray talc advertisement.
Now THAT’S a 70s fashion moment. Wish there were more men featured in the catalog, I'm living for their looks.

The website isn’t responsive as in the width of the website isn’t the full width of the device screen. There is a lot of white space on the left side.
I have found that the website is slow when I select an option to enrol in a class. I’m also unable to view the graphical version of my timetable.

The NZQA website is very complex because there are a lot of pages, and it would take a ton more work than choosing another.

The screenshot below shows a live sample of a new layout. When you click on a link, it will direct you back to the old website as they are still in the process of redesigning their website. It’s easier to read, works better on mobile phones and tablets, and works with assistive technologies like screen readers.
Wikipedia
Wikipedia is known as an unreliable source of information. “As a user-generated source, it can be edited by anyone at any time, and any information it contains at a particular time could be vandalism, a work in progress, or simply incorrect.” In terms of the visual design, its layout is very cluttered and not modern.
H&M – NZ site
From the homepage, a user who doesn’t know the brand H&M wouldn’t really be able to tell that it is a clothing store. When you click on the hamburger menu in the top right, the options don’t indicate that the H&M sells products. “A change in the air,” “The jeans guide,” and “Set the tone with dark hues” sound more like articles to read. There aren’t any advertisements on the clothes, mostly photos with a few sentences.
“Visiting ZARA's website is reminiscent of flipping through an editorial magazine. It's visually attractive, but shopping itself — which is the goal of site visitors — proves difficult. Consider the homepage of its US site above. The text is small and the navigation menu hides behind a hamburger button, so it's not immediately apparent to users what to do next. With no explicit CTA, visitors can easily become confused or frustrated.
The user journey is also difficult to follow on ZARA's mobile site. When clicking on the hamburger menu on mobile, an unconventional navigation menu reveals itself. Notice that there's no "Clothing" option. Instead, there’s a lengthy list that visitors have to sort through to find what they’re looking for.
Users who forge ahead will find no breadcrumbs or sort options to help them browse. As a result of this poor navigation, users might bounce to a more traditional ecommerce site instead of guessing where to click next.”

I was listening to the last episode of the podcast about writing drinking songs. While I talked about my song “The Cat Came Back… the Cat’s Perspective,”. It’s from my C-D… And then I paused, just like I do at live shows.
When I listened to the episode, I responded, “You have CDs…”
It got me thinking. Could we do that same thing through a podcast?
I don’t know. But we’re gonna try. We’re gonna make this podcast into a sort of an interactive drinking game.
Each time I mention CDs, your job is to audibly respond, “you have CDs…”

What happens when a traditional Irish song is rewritten about zombies?
One of the cool things about drinking songs is when the audience gets involved to make the song their own. I don’t know if that is the origins of the “dead, dead, dead” line in “Isn’t It Grand, Boys”. But it seems likely.
It also seems like a great inspiration for a geek to turn it into a song about zombies. My friend Cathy Dailey did that and wrote “Isn’t It Grand, Boys, to Be Walking Undead.” It features all sorts of undead tropes like BRAINS, crushed flowers, and hunting undead, which totally takes my brain to Buffy, The Vampire Slayer.
The “Brains” line is my favorite because it replaces the “dead, dead, dead” with “brains, brains, brains” in the most-zombie-like style.
The chorus is also fun because it includes the “Wilhelm Scream”. That’s the term used for that death yell I make at the end of “Just time for one bloody last cry”.
Oh! Check this out from Wikipedia:
“The sound is named after Private Wilhelm, a character in The Charge at Feather River, a 1953 Western in which the character gets shot in the thigh with an arrow. This was its first use following its inclusion in the Warner Bros. stock sound library, although The Charge at Feather River is the third film to use the effect. The scream is believed to be voiced by actor Sheb Wooley.”
Sheb Wooley is best known for his song “Purple People Eater”.
But the trope of all tropes that makes the song for me is “Up come the hands of another undead”. It’s creepy, very visual, and just perfect.
The song features Nathan Deese on guitar, whistle, bass and “Brains” comments.

It allows you to upload cover art, such as a product packaging layout or a magazine cover, so you can make sure that your subject fits into the parameters required by the project. You and your stylists can make the incremental tweaks necessary in still life photography, all while viewing the components within the frame on a computer or laptop monitor. If you’re a food, product or still life photographer, this feature will drive your productivity through the roof. However, Capture One offers a Live View function within the program itself. If you’ve used the Live View function on your camera, you may have noticed that you can only use it in natural light, or when you’re using a constant light source like an LED or the modeling lamp on a monohead. So why is Capture One worth a new learning curve? Let’s take a look: Superior tetheringĪs you may have gleaned from the introduction, tethered shooting is incredibly stable in COP, whereas Lightroom is known to be super-glitchy.Īnother advantage is that COP has a built-in Live View function. It’s an all-in-one solution for many photographers. What has become intuitive for you to do in Lightroom, may not work in COP.ĬOP has the library features of Lightroom with the advantages of Photoshop to work in layers. There are many differences between the programs. This is often what frustrates Lightroom users in the beginning, causing them to give up before they get started. If you’re a Sony user, Capture One Express is a free imaging editor that comes with your camera that includes some of the essential editing and workflow features found in Capture One Pro. In fact, COP has entered into a relationship with Sony. The software supports Phase One’s own cameras of course, as well as over 400 DSLR’s, such as those made by Canon, Nikon, and Sony. It’s been around for about 20 years and is made by Phase One, a Danish manufacturer of open platform-based medium format cameras.

There are tons of resources online if you want to learn how to use the program, many of them found in Capture One Pro when you log onto the interface.Ĭapture One Pro is a RAW file editor and management system. Rather, I want to walk you through the features and benefits of using Capture One Pro. This article is not meant to be a tutorial. If you’re a hobbyist, you still might find learning this image processor worth your while. If you’re a pro-shooter, or semi-pro, I would say Capture One Pro is a must. As a still-life shooter, I find that COP is unbeatable. But when Lightroom kept crashing and freezing on a career-changing shoot with a big ad client, I decided to make the switch. I didn’t want to learn yet another program or complicate my workflow. In fact, the speed and stability of tethering in Lightroom is one thing that has improved by leaps and bounds in 2019.īut if you shoot a genre of photography that requires tethering, like food or still life, or if you’re a portrait photographer, you still may want to consider moving over to Capture One Pro (COP).įor years, I personally resisted making this change. Lightroom has excellent color management tools and other features, such as noise reduction and spot removal, that make it the only program that many photographers use. It’s a powerful database for your image files. Now don’t get me wrong, Adobe Lightroom is a great program. Welcome to the reality of tethering in Lightroom. All while your client is tapping their foot and breathing impatiently down your neck. Out of the blue, Lightroom crashes, and you have to unplug everything and restart your computer. The clock is ticking, and you can feel the time crunch. Everything is going well, but you still have many shots to do. This may be a familiar scenario? You’re on a shoot, and you’ve tethered your camera to Lightroom.

You know something I just really hate?
(I talk about photos and editing and whitewashing, etc. when it comes to Stray Kids and their selfies. This started off with me being frustrated at a Minsung photo from a magazine and it devolved in to a rant, as it usually does.)
This would have been a really cute photo of these two.

I just hate how edited everything is all the time, even their selfies. I notice it a lot with Han’s selfies in particular, like
but they all do it, to some extent. Editing, filters, etc. It’s so much.
And it’s 100% not necessary, because every single one of them is absolutely stunning.
And honestly, there are ways to be edited, but to still look mostly like themselves, like
And just to clarify, I’m not saying Han is the only one who heavily edits his selfies (or if someone does it for him, I don’t know for sure, but considering there is always a differing level of editing, I’d imagine they have a hand in uploading them). In fact, I’m not a fan of some of Minho’s either. But as I said, they all do it, to varying degrees.

And as I’ve mentioned before, I’m simply not the person to talk about beauty standards in Korea, that’s not my place and I also don’t have a ton of knowledge on the subject.
But I still get frustrated at this. I don’t necessarily blame the boys for their selfies being this edited, I get it, but it doesn’t make me hate it any less.
