"Who's that girl" DWM 268 (1998)
So, who would have played the Doctor if she'd been a woman from the first? DWM rounds up the likely ladies …
Tumblr media
Hermione Baddeley 1963-66 Renowned for unsympathetic roles in both Brighton Rock and the dour 'kitchen sink'-styled Room at the Top, film veteran Baddeley made an enthralling Doctor - part dragon, part slightly dotty maiden aunt. Eternal juvenile Melvyn Hayes was 'unearthly' grandson Stephen Vivian Pickles 1966-69 Although much younger, and never a lead, the versatile Pickles had been a familiar TV face for 20 years (Harpers West One, etc) before being cast as Baddeley's successor. Her sprightly, elfin Doctor had a penchant for dressing-up, like a St Trinian's tomboy who never left school
Tumblr media
Liz Fraser 1970-74 A comic actress familiar from several Carry Ons, Fraser's initial trepidation at taking on an ostensibly serious role soon dissipated. Her bossy, big-sisterly show-off of a Doctor was best paired with dippy companion Joe Grant (later Playgirl pin-up Robin Askwith) Frances de la Tour 1974-81 Gangling, piercing-eyed Shakespearean actress de la Tour played a tweedy, louche, Bohemian Doctor part-based on Virginia Woolf. Caused a minor sensation when she married the young actor who played the second incarnation of Time Lord companion Roman — Peter Davison
Tumblr media
Jan Francis 1982-84 Despite rumours that the next Doctor might be played by a man (former New Avenger Gareth Hunt is hotly tipped), the youngest actress yet is cast. Fresh from middlebrow thirties drama The Good Companions, Francis made for a sporty Doctor in Lottie Dod-style tennis whites Lynda Bellingham 1984-86 Known to SF fans for her role as Barbara the Butcher in an episode of Jenna's 7, Bellingham's controversial Doctor was a loud, hectoring grand-dame of the theatre. Unceremoniously 'regenerated' following the Doctor's on- (and off-) screen inquisition in the epic Trial of a Time Lady
Tumblr media
Pauline Melville 1987-89 Virtually unknown fringe cabaret and cult comedy artiste is surprise choice for 'back to basics' Seventh Doctor. Fan fears that series will become showcase for childish high-jinks up-ended when Melville stories adopt a sombre, down-beat mood, performed with conviction and gravitas Miranda Richardson 1996 The eldest in a successful line of acting siblings, a favourite of BBC producers since high-profile lead debut in revisionist biographical drama of notorious 20th century 'villain', makes a bid for American network stardom via lavish new big-haired version of Doctor Who. Star Trek actor Alexander Siddig plays love interest Dr Brian

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 240
Smithy and Kerry are handed over to one of the Radford goons to be murdered and disposed of. At the station June calls off the raid because it hasn't been signed off by a senior officer. Panicking Rob tells her it's all in the bag, they just need to do the raid. They know they'll get them - it's their only chance. June reluctantly agrees.
Smithy tells David that the police will never rest until they find their two missing officers. He says they'll promise to never repeat anything they've seen and heard and that they should just let them go. He tells him it's inadmissable evidence and would be thrown out of court. David laughs. "Shall I just let you go then?"
The van races to the club, June gives them orders and tells them it's got to go without a hitch. Rob and Ken are worried as Smithy still hasn't rung like he said he would. As the gunman prepares - the van arrives outside. Kerry sobs how sorry she is to Smithy. "You didn't have to come back." "Yes I did." Just as he's about to shoot the first one - David comes in and tells them the club is being raided and to dispose of the gun.
Rob runs upstairs and comes face to face with Irene as Ken finds David. The police start to search for drugs and Ken splits off to find Smithy and Kerry. He insists that they can't get away with what they've done but Smithy says they have to - they can't be found there or tell what they've done.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No drugs are found in the club and the raid is a complete bust. Smithy and Kerry appear with the cover story have just 'having a drink and getting caught up in it'. Rob finds Wayne Radford and orders him to empty his pockets - finally some drugs are found! Even if just on him.
In custody Wayne is shocked to see Kerry in full uniform. She's scared he'll blab but Smithy assures her he won't, even he's not stupid enough to cause a full scale investigation into his family. Smithy covers with June, telling her that Kerry was having a full scale crisis about being a copper and that because she was off sick they went somewhere they 'wouldn't be seen' so she could talk about it properly. He asks her not to tell anyone that they were at the club when the raid happened - she does, with Ken and Rob taking the flack.
...Until Wayne shoots his mouth off in interview, in front of Gina, about an undercover officer being in the club.
Tumblr media
Gina reports it to Adam, who calls for June. He questions her about David Radford having a relationship with one of the officers. She has no idea at all - but it doesn't take long for the penny to drop. Gina is adamant that Kerry would have taken the undercover job - and is furious she's dragged Smithy along with her.
Kerry tells Gina it's all rubbish, Gina tells her to wait and not go anywhere else. Kerry asks why and Gina outright says she doesn't believe Kerry is telling the truth. She goes to talk to Smithy. Smithy knows he can't bluff Gina and tries to tell a version of the truth that sounds innocent. Gina knows what he's doing and is curious why he'd do it given that Kerry made his life hell with the rape allegation that never was. She tells him she backed him then and she'd back him now.
"... I don't know what you're talking about, ma'am."
"I'm not an idiot! I know exactly what Kerry has been up to!"
"Honestly ma'a-"
"Look Smithy, your job is on the line here! If she goes down, you go down with her! Is that what you want? To lose your job because some silly cow couldn't take no for an answer?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Smithy, being loyal stupid Smithy, refuses to take Gina's lifeline offer.
Smithy admits to the other three that Gina is on to them, but urges them to stick to the same story as they'd be home and dry. There's nothing she can prove.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Wanna bet?"
In the canteen Ken and Rob panic and Rob tries to blame Kerry. Smithy points out he put his neck on the line to get Rob and Ken out of trouble and they're going to pay him back by doing the same for Kerry. Rob just scoffs and asks him why he's going out of his way to protect her. Kerry looks at him, clearly wondering the same thing.
In Gina's office, Irene and David enjoy playing word games with the truth, but ultimately deny knowing Kerry and say she wasn't in the club and Wayne must have his facts wrong. David does know a blonde Kerry, but she can't be a copper. She's far too irresponsible for a role like that.
Tumblr media
Both women, whilst waiting for David to speak to Wayne's solicitor, clearly know the truth and they both know that the other knows the truth. They make a formidible pairing.
Tumblr media
Gina confronts Kerry in the locker rooms and tells her that she knows what happened and, not only that, she's about to make it her mission to ensure she gets thrown out of the MET. (and away from Smithy!)
Outside Rob doesn't know when to let things lie - he follows Kerry out and begs her for some information against the Radfords. She tells him she has nothing - but in her bag there are passports that she took from the stack in the office...
Smithy follows Kerry out and tells her to get some rest. She asks him why he risked his life and job for her. He replies "Why do you think?" She tries to kiss him and he pulls away, telling her she doesn't need that now and he hurries back inside.
At a high rise carpark, Kerry waits for a car to approach her. Inside is David - and she shows him the passports she stole. "You better get in."

There are only two times when I like Inquisitor Darkel, and that's when she's actually doing her job and not going after her own ambitions and political gains.
It's in Trial of a Time lord and the Inqury.
The irony is, she's went to court twice to deal with both Lungbarrow brothers.
You could say she has had enough of Lungbarrow's shit.

New thread for CBaker!Doctor.
Serial: The Twin Dilemma - Well. That was a thing. Poor Peri has been grabbed, shaken, strangled. Why does she stay? CBaker!Doctor is not impressing me so far.
Serial: Attack of the Cybermen - CBaker!Doctor is a lot more likeable in this one. Peri is flourescent. The Cybermen are actually pretty creepy.
Serial: Vengeance on Varos - This is very grim. I don't like it. Sil is repulsive.
Serial: The Mark of the Rani - Peri is in a lovely outfit today. Oh, the scarecrow is moving. No thank you. Yay, the Master is back! Yay, the Rani! So much bickering - I love it. The three of them are ridiculous.
Serial: The Two Doctors - Jacqueline Pearce <3 How have they managed to make the Sontarans look worse? I'm actually mad about it.
Serial: Timelash - And now Paul Darrrow, yay. I am enjoying CBaker!Doctor and Peri's relationship. They're like an old married couple. I wish people would stop grabbing her though.
Serial: Revelation of the Daleks - "Shut the fool up" made me laugh but possibly for the wrong reasons. This is the most disappointing Dalek story there's ever been. So far. Eleanor Bron is the best thing about it.
Serial: Trial of a Timelord - The Mysterious Planet: What is this music? Lynda Bellingham is excellent. Peri looks like a grownup. Joan Sims!!! I quite like the framing device of the trial.
Serial: Trial of a Timelord - Mindwarp: So much neon. Ugh, Sil's back. Brian Blessed being Brian Blessed. Nooooooo. Peri. That was very strange.
Serial: Trial of a Timelord - Terror of the Vervoids: Honor Blackman! So Mel's just there, huh. Doing lots of exercise. It's so jarring. Parts 1 and 2 both ended with her screaming too - why?
Serial: Trial of a Timelord - The Ultimate Foe: The Master - Thank God! Love that he's like, "You tell them, babe!" And these echoing childrens voices are creepy af. I'm glad Peri is not dead, even if it was half-hearted.
CBaker!Doctor Era Round-up
Favourite Companion: Peri Brown.
Least favourite Companion: None
Favourite Serial: The Mark of the Rani
Least Favourite Serial: The Twin Dilemma
I feel really bad for Colin Baker, because he's not a bad Doctor - i like him more than Hartnell and Troughton. There's a lot of good stuff there and the problems aren't really of his making. You can feel the poor production now - and the fact Michael Grade wanted it gone - and it's disappointing.

Not me pottering around my hotel room and getting totally invested in old The Bill storylines.
Amazing who pops up in old eps. So far I've had Natalie Robb, Sarah Hadland, Lolita Chakrabarti, Lynda Bellingham and Chris Geere.

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 254
We start where we left off, Smithy is outside with Kerry in his arms, bleeding from a gunshot wound. The alarm is sounded inside the station as Smithy shouts for those who are coming out to see what has happened to "take cover - shots fired!"
In his office, Adam breaks away from June to look outside and sees the chaos, running downstairs with June and Gina following too with assorted extras. Rob shouts someone's shouting at the front of the station and Adam stops everyone running down the stairs. He tells June to get an ambulance and asks Gina to call for SO/CO19. Gina starts down the stairs when she hears Smithy might have been shot, but she is ordered back up by Adam to sort out for armed support.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Smithy shouts over that they need an ambulance for Kerry, confirming to Adam he's fine afterwards. He keeps trying to get Kerry to open her eyes and look at him but she's rapidly losing blood. Smithy shouts again for an ambulance as Reg scoots the first aid box to him. Adam orders all officers to stay away from the station if they're outside the building and direct their attention to the flats and office directly opposite the station. Adam delays the ambulance that's at the end of the road until he knows that it's all clear.
On the roof Gabriel is desperatley scrabbling around to gather all evidence from the scene, including the bullet cartridges and to get away with the gun as quickly as possible. One falls down the drainpipe and as he runs round he finds access blocked by a large gate. He hides the gun in his patrol car and speeds off, driving erratically, narrowly avoiding hitting an old man. He drives into the station carpark, greeting Steve normally.
Smithy shouts again for the ambulance and shouts for Adam to let it in now because they're rapidly running out of time. SO19 (now CO19) appear and Smithy assures Kerry she's going to be fine, the ambulance is coming. Eventually she's loaded into it, Smithy accompanying her to the hospital. When taken through, Kerry quickly flatlines. Smithy is forced out of the room and has to watch through a window whilst the staff try to ressucitate her.
In her office June is in tears. Gabriel calls to her and June sobs 'she's so young, who'd do such a thing?' as Gabriel draws back - ironically into shadow.
Tumblr media
With no response to any of the CPR, the doctors have to call time of death for Kerry - Smithy breaks down. He clings to her hand and sobs over her body when they're left alone.
The usually noisy bustling station is completely silent as Adam walks through to the briefing room, having to tell everyone - CID, Uniform and Dean and Marilyn - that Kerry has died.
The 3 senior officers are in Adam's office to discuss what happens next as Smithy, bubbling over with anger and grief, bursts in the door. Gina instantly goes to his side and tries to comfort and calm him, telling him it's not the time. Adam agrees to let him have his say - but in private. Gina reluctantly has to leave the room with Neil.
Tumblr media
Smithy rages at Adam, accusing him of negligence for delaying the ambulance and insisting it's David Radford behind the shooting, demanding that he is brought in immediatley. Adam refuses, tries to calm him down and insists he go and bag his uniform for forensics and, if he can't continue the day in a calm manner, to go home.
Smithy literally barges his way through staff to go and change, Gabriel following him. He asks if he can drive Smithy home and if Kerry said anything at the end. Smithy calls him a vulture and tells him to get out of his face after venting. June asks Gabriel what he'd said to Smithy and Gabriel mockingly replies 'the man's losing it, isn't he?'
MIT's DCI Morell arrives and is brought up to speed. The Radford's at the likely target and Adam arranges for Ken to talk to her to explain the situation. She wants to talk to Smithy first.
Smithy is out of the station and looking for someone to blame. He makes his way to the Radfords Club and bangs on the door, demanding David come out to speak to him. Smithy spots him being driven away from the club with Irene and races back to his patrol car to follow.
Adam stops June asking Gabriel what is going on and what he's hiding by asking if she's seen Smithy. He offers to return to his office to discuss what they were talking about but before he can, Ken appears to tell him CO19 have found the location where they believe the shots were fired from - both important bits of news for Gabriel.
Tumblr media
Gabriel reminds June Kerry is dead and can't speak out, he reminds her also of his threats and that she'd also be throwing her career away. He then volunteers to help CO19 secure the building and June tells her to take Andrea with him. Neil tries to stop her going incase it's not safe, but she tells him it's too late for his concern. At the scene, Gabriel simply slips to the gate he couldn't get through before, trying to remove the bullet casing - thankfully he's stopped by Lance's boyfriend, the CO19 sgt, who orders him to get a CSE down instead.
Smithy overtakes the Radfords and demands David get out the car, thrusting him back against the roof as he accuses him of killing Kerry. Rob appears and manages to get him to stop assaulting David - much to the surprise of himself and Irene!
Tumblr media
With Smithy unavailable at the moment, June is interviewed by Rowan. She doesn't know of any enemies - purposely not mentioning Gabriel.
Irene wants to speak to Gina, turning up at the station. Yvonne is horrified to see her strutting through the station to Gina's office, evil eyeing her with Steve. Irene tells Gina about Smithy charging through the streets after their car - and Gina quickly dismisses PC!Extra so they can talk in private. Irene assures her that David had nothing to do with it. She says she knows that Smithy had a thing for Kerry and he's upset. "Meaning?" "You look after your boy, Gina, and I'll look after mine." ❤
Gabriel removes the gun from the back of his patrol car, stopping for a word with Mark, Lance's boyfriend, whilst holding it. He apologies for what happened at the scene. He then bumps into June and Rowan whilst holding it before hiding it in his locker. Smithy and Rob arrive and he tells Smithy they're all worried about him before leaving the room. Rob tries to comfort him, reminding him that even if they did get David and put him away forever - it wouldn't stop it hurting.
Ken tells Rowan that she's wasting time looking into Kerry's friends and colleagues and that it's likely to be a random cop hater or similar. Rowan tells him they need to get inside Kerry's life and find out exactly what was going on. They want all her phone calls and messages... June looks worried. She left a message on Kerry's phone asking her not to tell anyone about Gabriel.
Smithy sits in the canteen having to listen to assorted gossip happening around him - a press release, someone close to her doing it, flooding the scene with manpower etc etc. Rob comes to find him, telling him that Gina is looking for him. Smithy works himself up during their chat and Gina has to physically comfort him. Why won't anyone give the poor boy a hug? Well.. Gina... anyone else he'd shove away.
Tumblr media
He hands Gina his warrant card, "Can't do it anymore." he says, walking straight out before she can speak. Gina angrily throws it onto her desk.
Rowan plays June her message and and asks her what her comment about 'ruining careers' means. She says she was having a disagreement with someone and she wanted to take it further. She insists that she doesn't know who it is that she was having the disagreement with.
At the press conference, Bruce asks if the murder is linked with the other serial sniper shootings. They say they're not ruling anything out.
Andrea is played her message and she confesses that Kerry was angry with her because they'd been having a disagreement. She explains she was in a relationship that is now over and Kerry found out, embarassing the person involved. She's allowed out the interview room and goes to meet her editor, Bruce, in front of the station. She wants out. He refuses. The next day, Neil restarts their affair.
The gun from the other three shootings has been confirmed to be the gun that was used to kill Kerry from the bullet casing Gabriel 'found'.
June tells Gabriel that everything is okay, she didn't mentioned names in her message. She then asks him where he was when Kerry was shot. "Anyone would think you're accusing me of murdering Kerry."
Gabriel is almost out of the station with the gun as Rowan calls him back. She asks Gabriel if he and Kerry were close - he says they were as close as any two members of a team could be. She watches him with interest as he walks away.
Outside the station now the front is open again Smithy and Marilyn lay flowers. Marilyn offers to talk if he needs someone to listen. Smithy can't speak, he sits outside, just staring at the area that he and Kerry were after she was shot - and at the flowers outside. Gina appears and finally he starts to open up. "If I could have put myself in front of that bullet...." "I know, cos that's the kind of man that you are. And that's why I'm not accepting your warrant card so you can come and pick it up later on." He starts to cry after she wants to send him home and FINALLY she gives him a hug.
Tumblr media
Steve reports that a police car almost dropped a man down in an area that noone from Sun Hill would have been at yet. Gabriel claims it was probably Barton St. "I was on the Coal Lane Estate." "Allright, chill out - noone's accusing you!" Steve assures him before going to tell MIT. Gabriel visits the man who made the complaint and confuses him, telling him it was a joyrider in a grey car and not a police car.
Sun Hill know what the sniper was (ex military) and where he was and what he used, Suzie claims it won't be long before they know who he is. There is a difference with this shooting however though. Instead of just the one precision shot there were at least two shots made. The victim was a police officer rather than a criminal - however the common link of all other suspected sniper victims is still in place - Sun Hill Station.
Suzie then goes to find Gabriel and takes him to an MIT interview. Rowan asks why Gabriel has been lying to her. She knows the truth about him and Kerry. "Why didn't you tell us you'd been sleeping with her?" "I think you've made a mistake." "When Kerry died she was carrying three months pregnant. Your baby. When Kerry died she was carrying your son."
