I think it'd be neat if Midjourney prompt artists were popular in fandom. AI art has lowered the barrier to entry for personally producing an image of your textual blorbos, which is great. The democratization of blorbo visualization especially for the aphantasic. (Do you see how tumblr has damaged me forever?) I would have liked it if e.g. my Lymond fandom friends back in 2015 had shared AI-generated Lymond facecasts. Maybe someone could even have salvaged the della Robbia angels description

'Sweet to be taken up, as you say, as medicine is by the lip. Such a creature I enjoy, thin-skinned, tender and delicate, light of flesh and goodly in make, impulsive in walk and beautiful in the justness of stature. Communing thus, shall not our dreaming souls melt?' For a moment, Lymond did not reply. Then he said, in the same level voice, 'It is written before God, that after this hour we depart all four, in good health to Djerba?' The Aga Morat had risen. Looking down, his heavy face creased in a smile. 'It is written,' he said. Slowly, Lymond rose also. He looked neither at Jerott nor at Marthe, but stepped straight out from under the awning and confronted the Aga. In the blinding white light, the fine lines of his skin were all suddenly visible, and his eyes by contrast quite dark. But his hair, uncut since Marseilles, shone mint-gold in the sun. 'If it is so agreed,' Lymond said, 'I am solicitous for thee, as thou art for me.' And without pausing, he followed the Aga Morat into the house.
Pawn in Frankincense, ch9
I mean okay sure I suppose it is something of a time-honoured method of securing accommodation whilst backpacking your way across the continent but also.
Dorothy Dunnett what the fuck.

mid-year book freak out tag
years go by... i still read books...
1. Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2023? moby dick! i totally did not expect to like this dusty tome so much but it was just too perfect a mix of tropy revenge tale, sea adventure mockumentary, and making stuff up and putting it into categories that caused pleasant vibrations in my neurodivergent brain. i have watched so many whale documentaries after reading this, you guys have no idea🐳
2. Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2023? flamefall is the second book in the aurelian cycle and it’s the best sequel i’ve read so far this year. the addition of a slow burn mm master/servant story line improved things considerably, not to mention that it was my favorite character’s time to shine. this series is sooo good, please read it guys you won’t regret it i swear🙏
(ngl i’m a bit annoyed that fourth wing, this fireborne sjm-ified, is doing numbers out there and meanwhile there’s no fandom for the aurelian cycle to speak of😒)
also i simply have to mention defekt, book two of litenverse. i found the first book quite boring despite it’s shortness but the sequel has a sad lil guy🥺. highly recommend for fans of black mirror, severance or the murderbot diaries. you don’t reeeally need to read book one btw, i think you can just read the description and then jump straight to the good stuff
3. New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To? i want to read witch king but i keep putting it off cause everything i hear about it sounds suspiciously like *american author does mdzs* and idk how i feel about that😬
4. Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2023? i’m looking forward to system collapse the most bc it’s gonna be set chronologically after network effect and it’s longer than the other murderbot novellas too. very excited to see murderbot and art bicker again hehe
5. Biggest Disappointment? ig it’s the warrior’s apprentice😬 many people recced the vorkosigan saga to me as “the lymond chronicles in space” but based just on this first(-ish) book i have to say miles is uhhh,, not lymond😐 lymond’s key traits are that he’s queer and a cunt and baby miles is simply not that (yet). of all the other books that people mentioned on my overcompetent scheming bastard post this was the last one i hadn’t read so i was a bit disappointed that it didn’t pull me in like the lymond chronicles. however, of all the books mentioned there it’s also the only series i can see myself continuing any time soon so. it wasn’t all too bad ig🤷‍♀️
i was also somewhat disappointed by assassin’s apprentice but i will make myself push through the realm of the elderlings just bc i’m so intrigued by the fool👀
6. Biggest Surprise? apart from the life changing experience that was moby dick i gotta admit i didn’t expect to like the goblin emperor, what with it being one of those cozy hopepunk fantasies where people are nice and decent to each other🙄 but it really did grow on me by the end, it indeed made me feel cozy and soothed. now i wanna try katherine addison’s older darker stuff that was apparently so controversial she had to change her pen name or smth👀🤭
7. Favorite New Author? so i read another book by christopher rice and can confirm that he’s now one of my favorite authors. the man’s early 2000s gay thrillers are very melodramatic and refreshingly juicy - you can really tell they were published in ye olden pre-twitter times
8. Newest Favorite Character? cyrano savinien hercule de bergerac. after just reading that first act where he monologues about his nose for three pages straight and then spends all the money he has to hijack a theater and cause a scene by duelling a guy on stage while insulting him in ballad form i thought wow but this is one of my sexy fucked up guys who like to swish their swords and run their mouths! please enter the mind rotation chamber, monsieur🙌
9. Newest Fictional Crush? power sur eater🐉 you guys are sleeping on the aurelian cycle and on the Glory and Tragedy of My Boy who has done nothing wrong ever in his life and i love him😭 seriously, if you’d like to watch a character like draco malfoy go through jaime lannister’s arc you gotta read this series
also csevet aisava? the guy who put sexy in bureaucracy?? it’s a crime that he and maia didn’t kiss tbh
💕Best Ship💕 the relationship of griff and delo in the aurelian cycle was SO dramatic and full of rawest scenes! kinda reminded me of captive prince at times, bc of the whole master/servant element. and the ending? “i will grow old in love, let them sing of others”?? i am Emotion🥺
10. Book That Made You Cry? furysong made me cry my eyes out like every ending to a ya series should. have i mentioned you should read the aurelian cycle btw? but also both moby dick and cyrano de bergerac made me laugh AND cry as only really good books do. there’s a part in moby dick about seeing whales in mountains and stars that made me remember i am a human being and was a small and happy human being once - like that scene in ratatouille when anton ego tastes ratatouille and the nostalgic memories hit him and he becomes not evil anymore. that was nice but i cried like a little bitch😭
11. Book That Made You Happy? re-reading twittering birds never fly without skipping all the yakuza plot scenes made me realize how hilarious this manga actually is! yashiro can obviously crack a joke but this time i discovered the comic relief goldmine that is nanahara
Tumblr media
skjdvnksjdvk like?!
12. Favorite Book Adaptation You Saw This Year? i have a LOT of criticisms about martin crimp’s “free adaptation” of cyrano de bergerac but ngl it was fun to watch the play come to life on stage (even tho there were no swords, a crime😒) and even more fun to watch christian kiss cyrano on the mouth like god intended
13. Favorite Review You’ve Written This Year? so this year i actually started reviewing stuff on goodreads for the first time and it’s quite fun and really useful for refreshing your memory on what you thought of a book. i try to go for short and witty over in depth and analytical so i suppose the best examples of the reviews i have written so far would be the ones of moby dick and the goblin emperor
14. Most Beautiful Cover? the og red cover of fireborne slaps! the revolutionary red? the minimalist black dragon? the main characters’ profiles formed by its wings?? talented brilliant show stopping. idk who made the decision to redesign the covers after the first book but that decision was utterly stupid🤨
15. What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year? i need to finish some series (the diviners, the dreamhealers, the broken earth), then like i said i want to read witch king and also i’m doing the classics challenge again so i have to at least finish reading roxelana and re-read the picture of dorian gray (the uncensored edition👀). i have looked up my old mid year tags and was pleased to discover that i since have managed to read all the books mentioned there EXCEPT for you love me which has been a staple in my reading plans since 2021 so i’m gonna put it on this list again to honor the tradition lmao
overall i have to say my reading year is going well but i still miss the exhilaration of discovering new books worth obsessing over like it kept happening in 2019-2021 with the secret history, captive prince, all for the game, mdzs and lymond. last year i used to think i wasn’t doing a good job of finding books like this but now i’m starting to suspect that i have actually read ALL the good books and there aren’t any left :( but that’s absurd right?? or isn’t it?! anyways tell me what you’ve been reading so that i can maybe get intrigued by something and prove myself wrong on this🙏📚

Poor Little Meow Meow Poll Round 1, Class Conscious Cringefail Archer Edition
Tumblr media
my babies, my sweet cheese good time boys, my blorbos, my wettest of kittens.
ROBIN STEWART (Scottish Archer, would-be regicide, biggest loser in literature)
Qualifications:
I made a whole poll about this
but to summarize:
manipulated into becoming an assassin because of his class resentment
falls in love with his first assassination target, who happens to be the first person who has ever liked him
does not successfully assassinate anyone (but oh my god does he try)
vibes so bad he can't even successfully sell out his country because no one on the opposing team wants to talk to him
bitterly jealous of an 8 year old for being able to solve a riddle he couldn't
QUOTE: “You treat life, all of you, as if the world was a tilting ground. The lusty arts of leisure! When you're born to a mean spoon and a worn thread, when the only food in your mouth and the only clothes on your back and the only turf on your roof is your own bloody sweat, you get good heart out of all your braw hours of leisure, I can tell you!”
SU SHE | SU MINSHAN (the most dedicated villain henchman and Supreme Demonic Cultivator)
Qualifications:
as a scared teenager, made the selfish decision that he wanted to live and not die for his richie overlords
hated ever since
despised by the fandom for having bullyable vibes despite actually being a badass who made a lot of good points
insane little fucker who will cast a curse that turns his own chest into swiss cheese in order to horribly murder his bully. inspirational
insanely loyal to the man he loves just for remembering his name
dies trying to save him
QUOTE: “Lowlife? What right do you have to call him lowlife? All of you praise yourselves as decent clans and noble gentries. You're just counting on your lucky birth and powerful family. How could you look down upon us? Aren't we, peripheral disciples, also human? If I could have protected myself, would I have been threatened by others? Would I have been swept out of the Lan Clan like a pile of leaves?!”
(Feel free to vote even if you don’t know the canons! Which one has bigger wet cat vibes?)

Tag game: Tour my bookshelf!
Thanks for the tag, @general-illyrin!
An estimate of how many physical books I own: Including those in storage, probably over 800 by now. Those physically with me, currently, in my apartment: 267.
Favorite author: It's a tie between J.R.R. Tolkien, Paul Scott, and Dorothy Dunnett. They are my holy trinity ♡
A popular book I've never read and never intend to read: Hm, probably one of the YA ones floating around, with the courts and roses in the titles? Or the book with Gideon and Harrow. Those just don't appeal to me, particularly in terms of writing style ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (idk specifics, sorry y'all, I don't really keep up with literature past like. mid-ish 20th c, and even that's super late for me. It's 18th/19th c. gothic all the way for me XD)
A popular book I thought was just meh: Mmm, again, I don't really know what's popular tbh despite working in a library lmao; if it doesn't concern The Hyperfixations, it literally does not register in my brain XD. So probably some assigned reading in school, like Catcher in the Rye or The Great Gastby. I was an extremely unimpressed teen/young adult with most of the 20th c. American literature we were given to read.
Longest book I own: Of the ones in my apartment at the moment, just doing a quick visual scan, it looks like it's The Dictionary of Mythology; though tbh, I suspect my BHS probably has significantly more pages, despite it looking so tiny in comparison. But I'm too lazy to actually go look XD
Longest series I own all the books to: Depends on what we mean by "series." If it's strictly linear plot, then I think it's The Lymond Chronicles, by Dorothy Dunnett. If it's just same universe/same characters, it's definitely Agatha Christie's novels. If we're including comics as part of books? It's Lucky Luke, sitting at 82 issues yes I have all of them XD
Prettiest book I own: A New Treasury of Poetry, it has a beautiful cover and includes really lovely plates interspersed throughout the collection.
A book or series I wish more people knew about: Ahaha, none! I used to have one series, but then; well. Let's just say that, while I am firmly against gatekeeping, I can't help but notice that popularity sometimes does spoil some things ^^;
Book I'm reading now: Re-reading The Silmarillion, and making my way through History of Middle-Earth and Nature of Middle-Earth.
Book that's been on my TBR list for a while but I still haven't got around to it: The recently published Fall of Numenor is next in line for me to read.
Do you have any books in a language other than English: Yup, plenty in Greek, some in Spanish, and a handful in biblical Hebrew.
And lastly, paperback, hardcover or ebook? Oh, paperback for sure. I can't stand ebooks for my own personal use -- it's a great concept and I love the accessibility it provides, but it's just not for me; unless I'm reading fanfic, I require a physical item in my hands in order to be happy. Hardcovers are gorgeous, but I primarily read lying down on my back and they are very cumbersome in that respect. Paperback is cheaper, lighter, and there's far less guilt attached if you're a messy reader like me (pen/pencil notes, folded pages, reading in the bathtub/on the beach/while eating lunch or dinner, art/craft projects involving glue and paint everywhere in the apartment, keeping tons of plants on the bookshelves, etc.).

10 favourites meme
I got tagged by @batri-jopa, thank you friend! Funnily enough I had a long draft of my 10 favourite characters written out and ready to go, though I hadn't been tagged, so this just provides the perfect opportunity to post it! Tagging @stripedroseandsketchpads @erinaceina @notfromcold @bellaroles and anyone else who wants to take part.
I put the characters below the cut because it got long as I tried to justify myself, but I thought I'd copy you and also give a top 10 fandoms by way of introduction for the few new followers who have found me :)
Fandoms (counted as media that I've created fanworks for or actively commented on others' fics for) and what I love about them
The Lymond Chronicles aka tiny fandom: I love all the outsider perspective and unreliable narration around the protagonist, but also I love that he isn't perfect and a lot of problems are caused by his failure to trust people/open up. He has his reasons for being like that, but I like a story where it's clear the hero/great man actually needs those around him (even if they also frequently fuck up and misunderstand things) to get to the end of the story. It's the first series I read since LotR that immersed me so thoroughly in its world - an uncompromising, rich and nuanced take on a huge geographical sweep of history.
And Then We Danced: Oh, it's all about taking beautiful traditions that someone says mustn't ever be changed/aren't for you and making them your own, proving there's no ownership over art forms and culture. It's learning about yourself through art and through other people, it's standing up to the bigots and finding community and defining your nationality and traditions anew in more inclusive, vibrant ways. It's also all the pain of not having the chance to find out more about a first love and all the potential for what might happen in the gaps in the narrative.
The Terror (TV series): haha people sure do put themselves in Positions, don't they? I am fascinated by the hubris and the absurdity of the Franklin expedition, and how the show zones in on the isolated men in their boats and puts their values - good and bad, helpful and destructive - under a microscope and watches what happens to them under the stresses of darkness, illness, hunger and hauntings. There is so much love in the show even as everything that can go wrong does go wrong, there are all these little rituals and objects that people use to give meaning to what they're doing.
Star Wars (predominantly Rogue One): Rogue One reminded me of the SW universe I loved as a teenager, the unimportant people who weren't Force sensitive or powerful, but who fought to do the right thing anyway. I will be watching Andor for the same reason (and tagging so my friends who need to block it can block it - and not letting the Mouse have my money for any of it don't worry about that).
Ripper Street: I loved seasons 1, 3, 4 and 5. The less said about 2 the better for me, though I know a lot of people on here are big fans. In my head, there was a much more interesting story lurking beneath season 4 and 5 that I'm always disappointed wasn't drawn out - the immigrant children who were traumatised on their journey to London ('the world comes to London and London becomes the world' <3) and responded in such different ways. And by god I wanted Reid to answer for all he did wrong but I loved that fucked up man and his Victorian hypocrisy. Hmmm when I stop to think about it I really want to re-watch, though maybe only cherry picking the episodes that tie into my alternative narrative theories.
Utopia (C4 series): I have written fic for this! So odd as it may be, this is a fandom. I haven't been able to bring myself to re-watch since the pandemic because yikes, and it's so cruel that it ends as it does, unfinished. But it's so compelling - season 1 is good, season 2 is absolutely heart-rending. Everyone is complex and fascinating and always developing - the games of 3D morality chess going on are wild, and again, love is such an important factor even as everyone fucks up again and again.
Musketeers (BBC series): I never did watch season 3, it all felt far too silly by then. It's on the list because I wrote a couple of fics way back when and it was the first time I'd written fic in well over a decade. Episode 1 had such potential. The cast was so good. But it just...wanted to be a silly BBC series and not a complicated historically-engaged series so I'll simply enjoy drunk and grumpy Tom Burke!Athos, beautiful-haired Jerott-fancast Pasqualino!D'Art, luschious-moustached cunningulus-loving Santiago Cabrera!Aramis and unutterably perfect WHY-HASN'T-HE-BEEN-ALLOWED-TO-MAKE-THAT-DUMAS-FILM-YET Howie Charles!Porthos without trying to engage my brain these days.
Ghosts (BBC series): I haven't written for it, but I had a glorious binge of Captain/Havers fics after seeing that episode and it gave me enormous feelings of The Kids Are All Right because, while a lot of it felt like it was written by quite young fans, there was so much great ND!Captain and acespec!Captain but there was also some excellent what-if-they'd-just boned fic and I loved it all and it was just the kind of delightful escpaist comfort fic I would hope for from the series.
Castlevania: I still haven't watched the last series wtaff!! Hey guess who loves the big burly idiot who's accomplished in battle and hates how much he's become attached to the effete blond bisexual disaster? haha yeah. Trevor my love you're the hottest cartoon character since Fox from Animals of Farthing Wood :p I haven't written fic for it, but I do love me some filthy Trevor/Sypha/Alucard smut :D
Lupin: Again, not one I've written for, but goddd I want all the Lupin/Benjamin fic! Classic 'male protag is kind of a disaster in the life of every woman he interacts with but he's got a best friend who is never really given any background reason for why he helps him out of literally every scrape so I have decided they're better together'. That is all.
Bonus!! Our Flag Means Death: so far only really interacting with fic when my friend writes it, but I love to see how much @notfromcold loves it! All the characters are great and I don't really have anything to add to fandom but I enjoy it a lot :)
Ok now ten favourite charcters. Not in any particular order, I just wonder if putting them side by side and rotating them in the light will make any patterns emerge.
Eta: holy shit. Yeah. There are patterns. There's a lot of 'characters who pour all their emotions directly into someone else to help further the protagonist/narrative journey and end up not getting anything to show for it in the end'. There are also some crazy ladies :')
And while I didn't put Merab or Irakli in the list below, you can see why either would fit my style. I will say though, that while I fell for Merab when I watched ATWD it was seeing people blame Irakli for hurting him and acting like Irakli was just a heartless asshole that made me furiously protective over Irakli and made me want to explore Merab's own worse side too (love himmm but he's not perfect either).
1. Jerott Blyth (Lymond Chronicles)
Loyal, confused, competent and doomed to an unhappy ending. A brilliant second, who will go along with nearly anything if you just explain it to him - he needs trust and leadership and is unfortunately in the shadow of a leader who finds it nearly impossible to trust and share. But when he does!! Oh. My heart. Jerott's never bitter about being second best though, he's just a man who thinks he's simpler than he is, caught up in a world of complicated, fascinating, infuriating people.
2. Faramir (Lotr)
A good man trying to do good who is Never Enough for the person he looks up to. Happy to be a steward not a king, dutiful to the point of self-destruction. Thoughtful, intelligent and cultured, but generous and devoid of bitterness. Like Jyn and Cathy and lots of the others in this list, it's also particularly his relationship with another that I vibe off (I could have put Éowyn as the fave just as easily), and the way he sees in her the sadness he's experienced himself, but he chooses to reach out, to offer her a different perspective, to be kind and never bitter. Love my depressed kids who feel they'll never live up to expectations but find each other and learn to heal together.
3. Harry Goodsir (The Terror TV series)
...a pattern begins to emerge. Another good man who starts off thinking that the rules are there for a good reason, wanting to see the best in everything, believing that mutual benefit can come from a deeply imperialistic, imbalanced encounter. But he's not a pushover - he is content with his position until he feels he isn't respected and he sees his values are not those of his superiors, and then he stands up for his principles and standards. Does he become bitter? I'd say not - he's fuelled by a kind of singular, protective fury in the end, a desire to save whatever about the place can still be saved from the selfish destructiveness of his people.
4. Deborah Goren (Ripper Street)
She puts herself out for others to a point where it's almost unhealthy - and when it becomes so, she draws her boundary and says 'no more', she won't be the homewrecker when there's a chance for Reid to be this honest with Emily still. Again without bitterness or meanness, just in recognition that she can do no more without losing herself.
5. Jyn Erso (Rogue 1)
Closest thing to a protagonist so far on this list, but she's still in an ensemble piece and only effective because of that! I'm tempted to say it's specifically her connection with Cassian that makes her, and him, characters I love so much. They're mirrors, as Diego Luna said in an interview iirc, and it's by seeing each other that they remember their fire and determination to resist the empire (not that Cassian has forgotten this, but the hope he uses as a mantra has been something beyond him personally for a time, and seeing Jyn crawl her way out of the emotional pit she was in reminds him of things he's forgotten imo). Again competent and doomed, I suppose she fits my preference for secondary characters in the sense of the wider universe - she and the rest of the R1 crew are the sacrifice needed in order for the OT to happen and for Leia, Luke and Han to have their stories.
6. Daniel Molloy (IWTV TV series)
Not the protagonist, acts as a sounding board and outside perspective on the things the MC tells themself, doomed in the sense of his illness and age relative to the immortals he's found himself around...he fits the bill! He might be a bit more snarky and bitter than some of the others, but idk, I still don't think bitterness is his predominant trait - he's incisive and observant and wryly competent. I can't wait to find out more about him.
7. Luke Skywalker (Star Wars OT)
Haha this one is a protagonist Jo!! Literally the Hero on his journey!!
Well let me tell you that 10-year-old me, when first exposed to Star Wars, was not as yet familiar with old Joey C and formalist approaches to storytelling. There are a couple of reasons I think it's important to have Luke on this list. 1) I distinctly remember him being the first blorbo I had where I was like 'this trait [earnest optimism fwiw] actually annoys me deeply and yet he is still my fave. Why?' and 2) whatever media I had been consuming and whatever people I was around, it was a fixed idea for me at that point that The Hero Gets The Girl, and the sibling reveal was a '???? *animal turns its head 90 degrees to try to understand* moment. The hero doesn't become a kind of sexless monk-knight who insists fascists can be redeemed because they're dad-shaped! I joke I joke. Vader is far from dad-shaped, he's just dad. Anyway I recall being FASCINATED and vexed by Luke constantly and he was without doubt my favourite of the original trio. Was that because I thought he should be because he's positioned as the hero? Hmm. Maybe. But I remember it being a kind of thing with the people around me that liking Luke was a bit babyish, and Han was the more 'complex' 'grown-up' character. (Insert Always Sunny conspiracy board meme.jpg IT WAS THE SAME THING WITH STEPHEN GATELY OF BOYZONE WHEN I PREFERRED HIM TO RONAN something something cultural infantilisation/desexualisation of queer people (I only learnt later how many people read Luke as queer)).
Anyway, what I'm kind of getting at is the ways in which Luke is an unusual protagonist, and socially, my experience was of people not treating him as an MC because he was 'boring'. But even as a kid I knew that wasn't true and was fascinated by his repeated *decisions* to be good, to believe in the good and again, not to be embittered by what he goes through. Also the loyalty and earnestness came to be favourite aspects.
8. Catherine Earnshaw (Wuthering Heights)
Aaaaah. Uhhh. Make this one fit your theory, bitch! Well, starting simple, WH is once more an ensemble piece about the significant influence a group of people have on each other. Catherine and Heathcliff are mutually significant to each other's journey and arc and emotional development (reverse of the Jyn and Cassian pulling each other out of the mire thing though! Dragging each other down because they can't escape their social circumstances). Cathy doesn't exactly choose to be good, but her choices are motivated by a (misguided, patronising, cowardly) intention to do what she can with her situation (gender) to get ahead in the world and bring Heathcliff with her - because she can't imagine willingly 'lowering' herself to his level, he must rise. Ahh...*chews stalk of grass and surveys crop of awful faves* gives me feelings about Jerott and Marthe's marriage again. Anyway, blah blah, you get the picture - doomed to unhappiness but tries so hard to exert control over her life/others/the narrative anyway.
Also I love a mad lass who dreams of the moors. <3 #teamCathyneverdidanythingwrongever
9. Lucy Snowe (Villette)
Hahahahaha. Speaking of mad lasses! Lucy doesn't believe she's the protagonist. She's plain and weird and not meant to be The One Who Is Loved by the kind, handsome man or the mean, beautiful woman. She believes she's doomed to an unhappy ending - so much so that she even appears to summon one for herself, snatching it from the jaws of happily-ever-after. She's never upset about her position (except when she's so consumed with shame/angst/etc because she realises she let herself believe the handsome man might care for her momentarily), she's an outsider with a wry, cynical view of the people around her, but she does still crave involvement and recognition. Not at all self-aware and 1000x more entertaining for it. Also goes on a furious opium-fuelled rampage through the town, what's not to love?
10. Gudrun Brangwen (Women in Love)
Another mad lass :) Gudrun is a modern lady who thinks she's in control of her life and her sexuality. She realises way too late that she's in fact caught up in Gerald's own experimental, philosophical approach to the modern world (I wanna say like... basically a giant wager between him and Rupert) and she's still subordinate to him and his wants. It's been a long time since I read it, but her angst about the physical side of their relationship always stays with me - when she feels like a glass of wine he's draining for his own strength and she lies awake feeling unsettled and doubtful, while he sleeps it off with a masculine kind of arrogance (sorry, it's a DH Lawrence book, I'm allowed to describe it like that) after they have sex. Also when she punches that cow it's amazing. (I mean the animal, not being rude about another woman. Haha oh Lawrence you funny little man).
--
By and large then, it's secondary characters (my thesis was on minor characters why is this a surprise!) who exist to support the protagonist, or some other character, and whose relationships with the the protagonist/that other character make me feral, because they play a role that is meant to be kind of thankless but without them the protagonist couldn't achieve what they need to achieve/the story couldn't progress as it does. God it literally IS my thesis fml.

“The arcade lanterns, dimly exploring, found the darkened blond of soaked hair; the fixed flame of strung jewels and the line of wide brow and closed lid and turned cheekbone whose twin he saw, night after night, on his pillow.”
no thoughts only Checkmate fountain scene
What comes next is even more painful, but somehow that just crystallizes the beautiful agony of this moment (and the catastrophe before it), for me. Jerott Blyth and Francis Crawford and water imagery…
a clearer version of the first one:
Tumblr media
I drew these without referencing the scene, so it’s not quite the pose, but I hope it’s the vibe.
alternate caption quote: “The rain beat Lymond’s darkened hair into his hands and the barmi produced Russian arpeggios of emerald fire, keyed to all the irregular gusts of his breathing. Beneath his hands, his lips were parted. Jerott’s anger vanished.”
additionally: “He was so close that Jerott could see the vibration in him: a steady trembling, subdued as the purr of a tomcat.”
Francis: drunk. Was just sick. Rain soaked. Utterly miserable. Jerott: he’s like a purring cat
ok Jerott.
(my regards to @notasapleasure, whose writing is definitely responsible for some of these Jerott feelings)

Me reminiscing about reading the Lymond chronicles by my old doodles throughout the years. (Again! Yes, I'm finding an excuse to repost my art hehe) Long post, I apologize in advance.
Some of my personal favorites.
Tumblr media
Queen Mary sitting on his chest back in the Game of Kings. I really love the scene where he recounted this encounter to Christian. One of a few occasions that shows he was also very good at playing with children. (Gosh this made me think of those moments in Pawn in Frankincense..no...No!😭)
Tumblr media
Young Francis with Sybilla. I read that scene in Checkmate where the quote, " Put him blindfolded..." was in and I was so moved by it!
Tumblr media
It was a second reread of the Game of Kings if I remembered correctly? Oh and Will was so great in this I had to draw him!
Tumblr media
I love this scene so much! I've tried to draw this scene many times but this one is my favorite because these 3 were exactly what I pictured them to be as I was reading the book.
Tumblr media
I don't know how to approach to drawing Lymond's butt joke about Jerott but then I figured him reminiscing one of Jerott's worst moments in their time at St. Mary's kind of having the same thing too so.... (This quote was in Ringed castle btw)

Welcome to the pleasuredome!
(it’s a Frankie Goes to Hollywood reference)
Here I post aesthetics, reference, ficspiration, fanart, obnoxious playlists, and occasionally fanfic for my cursed 1980s band AU for the Lymond Chronicles.
I always welcome asks and requests! Wanna hear a playlist? Wanna know which character would listen to your favourite band? Want me to stop already? Just ask me and I will play! (but I won’t stop, sorry. I will add more tags if anyone needs them for blocking though)
Below the cut is a list of all the stuff in the band AU so far! I’ll try and keep it up to date.
Pre-series:
Prequel
Sibylla and her children watch the moon landing together in 1969, art by me.
Young Oonagh, illustrated by K
Jerott’s paternal grandmother, Deepa Anand, illustrated by K, with some backstory
Jerott’s mum, Kahina Bensaïd, illustrated by K, with some (a lot) of backstory, partly relating to Jerott
Music is a made-up thing like myth (posted chronologically on Ao3. Hasn’t updated in a while. Isn’t dead yet!)
Freshly victorious at the 1979 Solway Moss Battle of the Bands, young Francis Crawford, aka Lymond, finds himself stuck in an awful contract and an even worse relationship. Things don’t improve as his first US tour approaches and Lymond struggles to find artistic freedom.
Game of Kings
Eloise Crawford illustrated by K
Isolation (Richard reflects on the loss of his siblings)
Gunpoint (Lymond meets Dragut when he falls in with some mafia types)
Bleeding out (More mafia types)
Les gens ne te touchent pas/il faut faire le premier pas (Pune, India, 1981. Jerott Blyth is learning about himself with the guidance of Graham Reid Malett)
Returning to the UK, Lymond has to navigate rumours both personal and political: what role did he play in his sister's disappearance and just how involved was he with the mob in New York? In the meantime, uncertain of his record contract and his inheritance, he has to make a living: he tours relentlessly with bandmates Turkey Mat (drums), Will Scott (bass) and Christian Stewart (guitar).
Queens' Play
Francis in the style of Munch drawn by me
"Don't move" (Lymond wakes up from an accident to find Christian by his bedside)
Trembling (Philippa Somerville thinks her father has just returned - it turns out to be someone quite different)
Humiliation (Will Scott tries - and fails - to humiliate Lymond)
"Stay with me" (Richard pushes his injured brother too far)
West Germany, 1983: Ireland's Eurovision entry, ex-model Oonagh O'Dwyer, is forced to pull out because of industrial action at the Irish state broadcaster. Her partner, the playwright Cormac O’Connor, convinces her they may as well go to on that holiday to Munich and Berlin anyway. The Artist Formerly Known as Lymond, in a techno-goth outfit with Irish producer O'Liamroe, is on hand to disrupt events and keep an eye on young Mary Fleming, part of the British ensemble. But while he's there who can say no to a few illicit cross-border gigs in the GDR? Western decadence at its most provocative...
Disorderly Knights
Laced drink (Margaret Erskine is on hand to comfort Lymond in the aftermath of a heavy night)
Pinned down (Oonagh searches the wreckage in the aftermath of an illicit gig)
Seeking control over his career, Lymond decides to set up his own recording studio and fill it with hand-picked talent. In researching the kind of set-up he wants, he's pushed to get in touch with master producer Graham 'Gabriel' Reid Mallet, who is now a senior figure in the spiritual movement established by Rajneesh/Osho. As the miner's strikes rage on and police response toughens, the role of music in protest comes into sharper focus than ever.
Pawn in Frankincense
Shackled (Jerott Blyth witnesses the carnage at Orgreave picket line)
"Don't try to fix me." (Adam Blacklock thinks he recognises something about Joleta's behaviour)
Bloodied shirt (Everyone is sleep-deprived and grumpy as they leave Dumbarton in the middle of the night)
Stab wound (Lymond is late to a DJ set and misses an altercation)
Joleta and her favourite things drawn by K
Dragged away (Philippa and Joleta go for a night out in Edinburgh)
Scars (Joleta is curious about Lymond's scars)
Nightmare (Joleta stays over with Mariotta Crawford, trouble ensues)
Recovery and "None of this if your fault." (Philippa waits by her friend's bedside after an overdose). Illustrated by K.
It's your choice babe - so you choose well (Archive warning for rape, E. Gabriel/Jerott)
Oonagh and Joleta drawn by K
Oonagh in Rajneeshee red drawn by K
Abandoned (Oonagh O'Dwyer abandons her life in Europe for the promises of a Nebraskan ashram)
Breathe for two (Oonagh realises she's trapped at Graham Reid Malett's ashram)
It's time to try and break America - second time lucky?/Or will America break Lymond? As a front for a final showdown with Gabriel at his ashram in Nevada it's not exactly subtle, but at least Lymond gets to learn something about his family along the way.
The Ringed Castle
Human shield (Marthe takes Philippa into her first mosh pit)
Delirium (Jerott suffers with a combination of delerium tremens and cyanide poisoning)
Adrenaline (Luckily, there's a telenovela star called Dona Maria there to get him out of jail)
Asphyxiation (still suffering from the poisoning, Jerott wakes up at Baron Morgan's motel)
Secret injury (Gabriel doesn't want Jerott to leave the ashram)
This is it, that's the end of the joke (Jerott is at Graham Reid Malett's mercy immediately after his escape attempt).
Jerott in the style of Munch
The only one keeping me sane. (Marthe takes care of Oonagh at the ashram).
Marthe's t-shirts, illustrated by K
Unconscious (Lymond and a small blond boy sleep off their adventures)
Ransom (Gabriel catches up with them in Vegas)
Hallucination (Archie figures out the cause of Lymond's present malady)
Muffled scream (Philippa and Lymond share a Vegas hotel room)
Tear-stained (Oonagh and her son are going home)
Anemone (Jerott accompanies Francis into rehab; he's in denial about a number of things though)
Marthe and Oonagh, illustrated by K
Más é an ceol bia an ghrá (One night stands in Dublin: Marthe goes to Oonagh's leaving party, Jerott stays in the hotel bar)
1987, glasnost: Lymond and an ambitious group of artists, experimental sound technicians and musicians are invited to tour behind the iron curtain alongside Ukrainian bete noir Baida and his band. The tour is to be filmed by ex-propaganda director Ivan Vasilyevich. Meanwhile Red Wedge tries its hardest to get the people of Britain to vote in a non-Tory government at the general election.
Checkmate
Stitches Adam Blacklock has had a rough night)
Numb (Richard encounters his brother in Dundee)
Embrace (a version of the Languish Locked in L scene)
Philippa's Raspberry Beret drawn by me.
??Profit?? No really I need to write more of the rest before I know what the fall-out here is going to look like. It will probably involve: Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Concert, the opening of the Cairo Opera House and the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
Post-Checkmate
Beaten (Jerott Blyth has been behaving badly)
All we need is music, sweet music (After a successful gig in Calais, Jerott longs to be closer to Francis)
Soap, soup and salvation (Danny teaches Adam to cook for Kate)
Coisich, a rùin [come, my love] (a series of scenes in Francis and Philippa's relationship)
Spoilers for overarching plot NO REALLY POST-CM SPOILERS
Don't wake the house (Jerott breaks down on an half-familiar (OC's) shoulder post-Checkmate)
Jerott, Archie, Adam and Kate get ice cream, drawn by me
A love that seems great beyond growth (in need of rest and recovery, Marthe visits Oonagh in her new life)
"Would you just hold still?" and What I love about many waters (Philippa and Joleta go for cocktails. Lymond helps his wife through the hangover)
"Don't look at me like that." and "When you smile..." (domestic, married fluff with Francis and Philippa).
Pushin' palaces to fall (Thompson the pirate causes trouble for the Crawfords. He gets trouble back)
Morosexual (Danny has a tearful admission to make to Jerott)
If this name wasn't on my lips (Danny/Jerott record collection-based fluff)
Explosion (It's a prequel)
Period-appropriate playlists (links to Spotify, sorry)
A Purely Spiritual Love (you may hear this at Graham Reid Malett’s ashram)
In a position of ascendancy... / ...a knife gripped in each hand (inspiration from Danny and Adam’s Jewish background)
Every Cell Charged with Stark Common Sense (young Philippa’s folk influences)
tant que je vive (Francis/Philippa happily ever after)
A twinge of approval (Danny/Jerott happily ever after)
Nothing but the Cathartic (Francis thinks Sibylla and Richard are dead)
Feared before God and the Devil (soundtrack to The Ringed Castle)
Come to Linger (Adam/Kate happily ever after)
Such Hapless Hap (Francis pining over Philippa)
Hard-wrought with Unleashed Storms (an Oonagh O’Dwyer playlist)
Stop your breath (a Joleta Reid Malett playlist)
By Some Alchemy (an Archie Abernethy playlist. DRUMS!)

A. Realizing my other two posts tagged 'blog maintenance' were a post introducing the tag to block if you didn't want occasional posts about Christianity (that tag is 'faith in the dark' btw) and a post alerting Les Mis fandom people that I was posting a lot about Lymond and that Lymond is pure angst and that they could block that tag... I stand by that. Lymond is pure, addictive angst.
B. Took 'disabled martial artist' off my blog header because I've been out of practice and focused on rehabbing my stupid sprained tailbone and/or getting back into boats so I have not been posting much about martial arts. But I'm still disabled and I'm still a martial artist.

Tagged by @skaelds -- thanks for the tag!
1.Three ships?
Hmm, I’m going to interpret this as romantic ships, because I have much fewer of those than platonic ones; otherwise we’ll be here all day XD I don’t really have any ships in Tolkien (like, I’m cool with all the ones established in canon and a handful of fanon ones, I’m just not particularly invested in any), so:
Ulquiorra/Orihime (Bleach) Erza/Jellal (Fairy Tail) Sesshomaru/Kagura (Inuyasha)
2. First ever ship?
Probably Lymond/Phillippa (The Lymond Chronicles)
3. Last song?
The Sea and a Pearl by Junna yes, I’m stll upset about how the series went but the opening song is so catchy damn it
4. Last movie?
I rewatched both Phantom Rouge and The Last Mission, for Hunter x Hunter research purposes 👀
5. Currently reading?
I’m about to start (re)reading the Silmarillion, the entire HoMe, Fall of Numenor, Nature of Middle Earth, and select parts of LotR and the Hobbit -- ideally in that order -- in preparation for some much overdue fic writing and possibly text-supported blorbo analysis because if I see one more take of a certain flavor, I am going to start a cult to Melkor
6. Currently watching?
I’ve been rewatching Space Battleship Yamato in the background while drawing (tbh mostly for the music; I can’t find the soundtrack anywhere and it is gorgeous); and in terms of currently-airing, I’m following Vinland Saga S2 (it’s beautifully rendered but I miss Askeladd SO MUCH), Boruto (I can always rely on Narutoverse to be there for me ♡), and Revenger (still forming my opinion on this one).
7. Currently consuming?
Coffee and water. I should probably actually eat something solid but basic self-care this past week has been at an all-time low.
8. Currently craving?
The attention span to sit down and just. finish editing even just one of the seven different fics I’m working on so that I can actually post something  T___T

15 Questions 15 Mutuals
Rules: answer the questions and tag fifteen mutuals.
1. Are you named after anyone?
Saint Alexios; very traditional and typical of my family to name me after a saint. Me? Not so much a fan. I have a very love-hate relationship with my name.
2. When was the last time you cried?
I rarely cry, like once every few years, but I fulfilled my quota this past Wednesday ✌️
3. Do you have kids?
Absolutely not.
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Lmao every sentence. Even when I honestly don’t mean to use it, I end up sounding like I’m being sarcastic XD
5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?
The way they move, primarily their gait. I’ve realized that I recognize people by the way they walk and hold themselves rather than their faces or other more conventional aspects *is actually a dog in human form*
6. What’s your eye colour?
Debatable. I, personally, think it’s green, but I’ve heard others say blue and/or grey.
7. Scary movies or happy endings?
I don’t really care for scary movies, so I guess happy endings by default; but honestly, any media that is narratively coherent and consistent and delivers satisfactorily.
8. Any special talents?
Scary levels of organization. Can recognize people from the sound of their footsteps. Dog magnet. When I walk/move, I apparently make no sound and terrify people, even if I’m not trying to be quiet at all.
9. Where were you born?
Greece
10. What are your hobbies?
Drawing, writing, cosplay, swordsmanship.
11. Have you any pets?
I used to have a zoo, but time happens and..... as of this past week, there are none left. It’s been rough. (I live with my sis and she still has hers, so there are still fur babies in the house, but. it’s not the same.)
12. What sports do you play/have played?
I used to be big on soccer and basketball way back in middle school and high school, but none since then. I do practice martial arts, but none that fall into the sports category.
13. How tall are you?
About 170cm/5′6′’ ish.
14. Favorite subject in school?
English. Who knew that all those years of successfully bullshitting literary analysis would lead to online blorbo appreciation?? XD
15. Dream job?
Once upon a time, I dreamed of having a job that let me travel the world, allowed me to work with archaeological artifacts, and provided me with a skillset that I could also apply to my creative endeavors and other hobbies (i.e., objects conservator with a focus in metallurgy/metalsmithing).
Now, I just want something that requires minimum contact with other people/the public, is interesting enough to not bore or irritate me, and that leaves me with enough time and energy at the end of the day to pursue my own interests. Oh, and that pays a livable wage! Unrealistic, I know XD
.
Uh, I don’t think I have 15 mutuals ^^; so I tag: @baked-hylian, @cruelfeline, @nomadicism, @chellekumari, @strangefellows, and anyone else who wants to do it! Do it only if you want, of course! :)

Tag game
I got tagged by @batri-jopa, thank you! It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these :)
Favorite color: Always changing, but I tend to come back towards greens/purples/turquoises most often.
Currently reading: My reading brain is awol. I've been part-way through issue 32 of The White Review for about three months. I just can't relax into a book or even poems at the moment without the nagging sensation something's going to interrupt me/I need to go and do something else. Obviously I read every day for work and for editing fic, though.
Last song: Magnet - You Got the Power. I was making a folky playlist (by request of @stripedroseandsketchpads!) and had it pretty much done, then wondered if the band that did the Wicker Man soundtrack have other albums. They do, but it's pretty a different style and kind of generic.
Last series: I was re-watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries with mum, before then it was Shadow & Bone, if we're talking about last completed series. But I did also spend a day hungover and binge-watching season 2 of The Wine Show which is...actually really good?? I was watching for James Purefoy's fnar fnar comments but stayed for James Purefoy expertly rounding up bulls on Camargue horses and the camera operator's shots lingering on his smirking mouth. Unfortunately my trial subscription to that channel ran out, so no more educative TV for me.
Last movie: The Aeronauts. Good! I enjoyed it, Felicity Jones is excellent and it looked very pretty and somehow made a compelling narrative out of very little material, with good editing and use of flashbacks.
Spicy/Sweet/Savory: Savoury and spicy! Speaking of, it's ქართული საჭმელი night. Georgian food, my beloved: the perfect combination of rich comfort food (cheese and bread and dough and beans!) and subtle, delicious spices.
Currently working on: Ok, this is awkward but here is a list of drafts in my notes app that I have been picking at over the last few weeks...
ATWD: Inchoate (though I'm on a short break while I practice tightening up writing passage-of-time chapters)
ATWD/Lymond: The sort-of sequel to I Will Shake Mountains, which is actually the world's most niche crossover with a 1980s band AU of a book series about a genius depressive sixteenth-century mercenary nobleman. When I put it like that it sounds insane, I know, but basically what it is is Merab and Irakli in London encountering some rich and successful old queer artists in London and getting confidence and support from the meeting.
Lymond: The band AU characters celebrate Margaret Thatcher's downfall in a series (?20 or so?) of vignettes from the party, with an accompanying playlist. I stg @erinaceina it will be finished one day. Maybe even before Bojo fucks off, too!
Lymond: A follow-up to that Jerott and Danny canonverse 'one shot' I wrote. No I CAN'T just leave it as it is because they haven't kissed yet, don't you understand???
Lymond: band AU emotional/dynamic mediation whump with a side of UST, Jerott/Gabriel and the significance of Francis Crawford...
Also there’s WIPs that I also remembered existed and am kind of annoyed no-one's going to finish for me, because there's a lot to like there, but I need to learn the art of brevity. I might try using the plots/settings to challenge myself to write <1000 word summary fics. If there's any in particular anyone wants to see just shout at me and it might be more likely to happen... They're all Lymond, drafts from pre-pandemic times I believe.
Marthe takes Francis' place at the end of PiF and Jerott acts as caretaker for Francis as they pursue her and Guzel. Jerott and Francis come to...healthier terms with one another (aka oh just shag and get over yourselves boys).
Jerott turns up at St Mary's with a wound in need of care. Aka the old 'Jerott gets stabbed in the butt' fic. Francis as caretaker. Jerott and Philippa having a conversation that I remember thinking was very important at the time but now can't remember precisely what aspect of their shared trauma around Francis it concerned.
...there's a theme here. The 'St Sebastian fic' where Jerott gets shot full of arrows and admits something to Francis, thinking he's going to die. Francis goes on a Rampage.
Right now I've written the word 'Jerott' so many times I feel like a fool.
I'm going to go and make some Georgian food and think about what I've done. ^^'
Thank you for tagging me, @batri-jopa!! And thank you for all your beautiful ATWD art. I’ll be interested to know what you think of Wet Sand when you see it, too - I did not fall for it like I fell for ATWD, but I think it is an important step in (queer) Georgian cinema :)
Tagging anyone who wants to do this, but no pressure @stripedroseandsketchpads @erinaceina @notfromcold @kheldara @raelis1

yuletide letter
Thank you so much for writing! I always want more fic for these fandoms, so while I have a lot of prompts for some of them, if you already have a different idea, I'm excited to read it!
Treats are very welcome, including art, unconventional formats, and crossovers! A (non-exhaustive) list of potential crossover fandoms is at the bottom of the letter.
General likes: missing scenes, alternate POVs of canon scenes, outsider POV, canon divergence, epistolary & in-universe documents, angst, hurt/comfort, recovery (interpret broadly: trauma, injury, relationships...), bittersweet endings, humor, plausible crack (i.e. convince me it could actually happen), crossovers, worldbuilding, hypercompetent disaster characters, steady & stubborn characters
General DNWs (discussion of canon instances of these is fine): explicit sex (M rated is fine), rape/dubcon, incest, body horror, canon atypical trauma, reader insert, omegaverse, soulmate AUs, mpreg, gaslighting, cheating/infidelity
Prompts below for inspiration, but if you have a different idea I'm excited to see it!
The Lion Hunters: Goewin, Medraut, Turunesh, Telemakos - one or more of the chosen characters
I love this family and all their messy but loving relationships, but I'm also happy for non-requested characters to have a major role if that's where the story takes you. Some prompts:
An outsider POV of the family once Goewin & Medraut decide to stay in Aksum. What does the Aksumite court think? Maybe someone who knew Medraut fairly well when he was ambassador? He's not an outsider, but how does Kidane feel about his household being shaken up?
In the same vein as above but focusing on fewer characters - how does Goewin adjust to her new position? When/how does she start working more closely with Wazeb? When does Medraut start staying at the monastery and going out with the elephant hunters? How do Turunesh and Telemakos deal with Medraut coming back to them and then sorta leaving again? Medraut & Telemakos hunting trip? How/when did Medraut get his staff of Asclepius tattoo?
More generally, anything set in the time between A Coalition of Lions and The Sunbird.
Post-canon fic! Let everyone be together and happy, but also maybe let them process some trauma.
Pre-canon fic! Goewin & Medraut's relationship before he leaves for Aksum the first time? Turunesh & Kidane's travels? There's a mention in Winter Prince of Medraut visiting Iona - tell me about that?
The Lymond Chronicles: Francis Crawford of Lymond & Sevigny
I got decision paralysis trying to choose from the nominated characters, so I ended up going with just Lymond himself - that said, other characters are more than welcome to feature as main characters!
Canon-specific DNWs: romantic Christian/Lymond, modern interpretations of gender or sexuality (I am interested in explorations of this, but within the historical context), non-requested AUs that change the setting
Some prompts:
If you want to focus on Lymond himself, I'd love to get inside his head at any point during the series (wouldn't we all?) On the flip side, I always love an outsider POV - maybe from the French or Russian courts?
Lymond & the concept of friendship: he's terrified of his friends being hurt because of him and tries to push them away to prevent it, but at the same time there are a handful of people he relies on to stay his friends no matter what; he even says so (the Somervilles, Jerott). Do something with this?
I think it would be interesting to put Lymond and his hypercompetence into a sci-fi or fantasy AU.
If you're bringing other characters in, here are some relationships I'd be especially interested in:
Lymond & Molly: she doesn't appear after GoK, but I can't believe they never saw each other again. Maybe she was involved with some of the shenanigans we see at the beginning of The Disorderly Knights?
Francis & Sybilla: they're so important to each other but also they hurt each other so much. I'm especially interested in their relationship pre- or post-canon.
Lymond & Archie: Had they met before Queen's Play? Did they know of each other through Mat?
Francis, Philippa, Kate, Adam, Kuzum: they're all family post-canon (presumably); what does that look like? Lymond's relationship with Kuzum is obviously complicated by The Trauma and I don't want that to be ignored, but I'd like this one to have a happy/hopeful ending.
Lymond & Marthe: Lymond POV of Marthe - maybe their first meeting, or in Stamboul? Alternatively, AU where Sybilla does get to bring Marthe home with her and they grow up together.
Francis & Christian: I feel like their conversations sometimes reference their earlier friendship, but the reader is left in the dark about the specifics. I'd like to see their friendship as kids/young teens. I can imagine them bonding over music & poetry (Christian mentions Sang School). Or an AU where Christian lives and Lymond has both her and Margaret Erskine watching over him during Queen's Play.
Lymond & Danny: Danny POV is always a delight, but I'd also love to see Lymond's opinion of Danny. Would the Voevoda really not notice if Danny placed himself nude on the floor?
Lymond & Chancellor: I'm desperate for a Chancellor lives AU where Francis & Philippa sponsor his expeditions and he stays with them when he's home. Make this poly if you want, but friendship is also great!
The Singing Hills Cycle: worldbuilding, Almost Brilliant - one or more of the chosen characters
I'm fascinated by the lore we got about neixins in Mammoths at the Gates, and I'd love to know more about them - neixin culture/social structure, their relationships with the monks, what it's like having perfect memory of all the stories they hear and how that affects their view of the world.
I'm also up for fic about almost any aspect of worldbuilding - a non-exhaustive list: more about the monastery, the monks' travels, the process of becoming a monk, new stories collected by the monks & neixins, more about the mammoth riders...
Tir Tanagiri - worldbuilding
I love this twist on Arthurian stories (and the Tain), and I especially love Sulien - but I chose worldbuilding because it's what I most wanted to know more about. We find out that Tir Tanagiri is essentially a parallel universe from ours and...that's it. Tell me more! Some prompts:
More about the parallel universe thing - I'd like to see this from the perspective of a character who knows a lot about it, maybe in the form of instruction or storytelling/myth
Cultural attitudes around gender and sexuality: obviously it's relatively common for women to be soldiers and Sulien reads as aro/ace, though that terminology isn't used in-world. We mostly see this from Sulien's perspective, but what does society at large think?
More about the religions, new and old - maybe in the form of stories/myths? More about Coventina?
Chapters in The King's Peace and The King's Name are introduced with snippets of poetry - if you're poetically inclined, maybe a new poem or an expansion of one of the canon ones?
Potential crossover canons:
stuff I like from the yuletide tagset: Queen's Thief, Teixcalaan, Imperial Radch, The Mirror Visitor, The Raven Tower, Steerswoman, The Tarot Sequence, Tam Lin, The Waste Land, Earthsea, Hexwood, Last Binding, The Mabinogion
some other options: mix up anything Arthurian-inspired with Lion Hunters or Tir Tanagiri (I have a soft spot for The Once and Future King), Discworld (I think Lymond being a thorn in Vimes' side would be particularly fun), Doctor Who, Warehouse 13
