his left side, feeling the smallest amount of blood pool underneath his glove. it'd
gone south the moment they discovered that mercenary camp - they had tried to
get out by then but it was too late and now here they were, followed and cornered.
usually he was a self - sacrificial bastard wanting to feel better about himself by
getting hurt. now he was a selfish man that wanted to protect the person he might
just call his best (and only) friend. he rests a heavy hand on eijis shoulder, looking
into the others eyes for something, anything, only to be met with the stubborn
refusal of leaving him behind and abandoning him. his smile softens, gaze almost
gentle as he pulls the other into a tight, bone crushing hug. at the end of the day
they were two damaged guys doing whatever they could to make it through the
day. or so he wants to say, instead his voice is strained but warm when he speaks.
❛ you are my brother, eiji. i'll meet you at the beach. ❜
and with that he pulls away from the hug, glances behind eiji down the small cliff
to make sure there were no rocks at the bottom before pushing the other man in
the water, yelling a wish for good luck after him before sprinting off towards the
opposite direction, hoping to lure their pursuers into the jungle where he could
lose them with ease. he can't even remember how many times eiji saved his ass;
it was his turn to repay the favor. plus that way the other might be at the beach
faster than him so he could enjoy a little bit of their getaways wifi signal.

Welcome to June, Ticketholders! And Welcome to the Dead Parade, a series of reviews I started back on April 17, 2012, that have to do with zombies, ghosts, vampires, Tom Cruise, rat-people, killer dolls, and mosquitoes because I am a big fan of horror movies and zombie tropes.
The title is borrowed from an old song by Lukas Rossi and the Rockstar Supernova.

So. Fun story. Originally, that was not how this thing ended.
It took me ages to figure out how to finish this story. Keep in mind, in the original draft, Zhora lived. So it all felt a bit too clean, a bit too Happily Ever After, no one suffers any consequences and everyone gets to go home and drink lemonade.
I went through so many versions of the ending trying to get it right. There’s a version where Luka tried to break Aleks out of prison by causing a riot and Aleks ended up on the run again, pretty much back where he started. There’s a version where instead of being released from his military commitment, after talking to the king Aleks is sent back to Rensav, and Saria and Raina get on a train and stage a mission to help him escape a second time. They’re both pretty badass, but in the process of things, Raina dies. Aleks is so overwhelmed with guilt that he can’t bear to go back north and face everyone, so he sends Saria home and accepts his fate of four years at Rensav. Obviously finishing it on that note was a touch too depressing, but the whole break-out thing almost ended up being the one. I just couldn’t figure out a way to write it that felt satisfying.
Eventually, I figured out that the ending wasn’t exactly the problem, but the climax of the journey was. So then I went back and killed Zhora and everything worked out nicely. Sorry.
But I’m really happy with how this ending turned out. I like the thrill of reading Aleks getting imprisoned and looking at the book and realising there’s hardly any pages left for him to wiggle his way out of this part. I like the introduction of the king being so sinister, after everything we’ve heard about him being a kind and fair and wonderful ruler, and how because of him Siberene is prospering, and ‘surely if the king knew he would never stand for this’. Once again, Aleks is thinking the best of people. Of course the man in charge knows what goes on in his military bases.
And, most importantly, I like the little glimmer of hope we get in the form of Prince Erik appearing to be an actual decent human being.
One thing you may not know about me is that I love the idea of a functional monarchy. I love writing worlds in which it’s not just a figurehead position but an actual job that is taken seriously and heavily involved and works with every aspect of a society. Mostly because I love the idea of the person at the top of the power structure actually caring about improving society for everyone, but hey, I can dream, right?
So while there’s only a small glimpse of that in this ending, I do like that it’s there. This idea that maybe once the bad king is out, the good prince could inherit and actually keep people safe.
(I also very much like that the king thinks he’s won by getting Luka’s ship, while Luka is stood there all smug knowing no one will ever understand it and also it’s broken).
Past that part, I feel like it really shows how much Aleks has grown through the course of the story. He’s not as naive as he once was, but he still has a lot of that optimism that makes up his character. He’s done the thing he always dreamed of and discovered it was not actually as great as it was cracked up to be, and he’s ready to embark on a new dream that’s a little less glamorous but a whole lot more fulfilling.
Another fun fact is that I almost wrote a short story for this one the same way I wrote a bunch of short stories for TBtS; it would’ve been set a couple years after the book, where the king is about to embark on a journey through the Stormlands claiming his people have finally replicated Luka’s ship, and they’re all trying to figure out what to do. Prince Erik was going to be the one sabotaging the ship and letting his father be ‘lost to the storms’ so he could then ban anyone else from making the journey, promising Aleks he would keep that land untouched the best he could. Also, Drazan and Raina totally got together in this headcanon future of mine. Maybe one day I will actually write that short, if the mood strikes.
So there we are; two down, one to go! Join me tomorrow for the beginning of the final instalment in our Tellus adventures. In my opinion, it’s the best one yet!

lukas is his neighbourhoods favourite go-to when it comes to babysitting since he's really good at keeping kids entertained but has enough mother hen tendencies to keep them safe and out of trouble.
that being said, he also makes sure to teach them that no, big dogs aren't scary and yes, his dobermam won't eat you she just wants to cuddle and tbh idk why but the thought of his dogs being carried around by him to show off the kids and getting pets me really happy
