Luger blinked in surprise, opening his mouth to suggest otherwise - but perhaps, just for a short while, he might accept this - just for a moment. "... Thank you" he said softly, looking almost .. Tender. He had been through hell and back, this was the first time anybody had ever comforted him since the incident. The confirmation, the allowance to let himself accept this comfort, even for a moment.

HEY YOU Hit me with some Julie Su propoganda cuz I'm mostly lukewarm on her character and don't know all that much about her.

OK OK ... well baseline info she's the daughter of dark legion general luger, and half sister of lien-da and kragok, who are twins and both high ranking legion soldiers. when their mother (merin-da) died and luger remarried, ld and kragok hated his new wife (julie-su's mother) (mari-su) so bad they orchestrated her death, info which was they kept on the DL for a long time until js eventually found out about it. memory situation, js is raised by other folks who actually love her and doesn't learn who her blood family is until later. she joins knuckles because she feels inexplicably drawn to him (soul touch) (echidna soulmates) so she defects from the legion to join the chaotix. the soul touch thing sucks and i hate it but this is how it goes. ill talk about my au version of her at the end lol bc things ive built on top of canon are part of the reason why shes one of my fave charas in the series lul

ANYWHO i honestly find it pretty frustrating when people talk about js as just being pink knuckles, shoehorned into the story to give knuckles an obligatory girlfriend, because it really demonstrates that they like. weren't paying a lick of attention to anything because she genuinely has a LOT of personality but since people just go in anticipating anything penders touched to suck they don't even bother to think about her for longer than half a second.

js fills a niche that, imo, could always use filling, especially with regards to girl characters, which is to say shes a well meaning asshole. shes incredibly blunt, she's pessimistic (immediately assumes knuckles must be dead when enerjak returns and they cant find him, tells knuckles not to search a fallen ship that his mother was on because shes probably dead and she doesnt think he'd want to see that). shes terrible at handling interpersonal conflict (knuckles confesses to her that he feels guilty and stressed over all the pressure put on him as guardian and she scolds him and says "this isn't just about you", which results in a minor shouting match when she really had zero intention of starting an argument), she's almost constantly beefing with vector (tbf its because hes sexist he refuses to see past her history as a member of the dark legion). these might suond like cons but i love characters like this LOL and they fit especially well in archie where people love to get mad at each other and make dumb mistakes and it just feels very genuine and interesting and endearing to me. shes rough and difficult but she's also DEEPLY loyal. she'd die for knuckles and the chaotix and the way she interacts with them always makes me soooo ........ im just gonna give some examples i can find.

^ this was the genuine conclusion of an argument they had and im obsessed with it because both of them suck with emotions so they both give the worlds strangest apology and know that the other means it and they move on. plus putting her arm in front of SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG while theyre confronting eggman even after watching him CHAOS BLAST, primarily because she feels like this is more her fight than his (its about knuckles).

theres def more and i could find them if i was more on top of archie but unfortunately im #narutopilled rn. BUT ANYWAYS. shes just a very fun character with a messy personality and fun interactions and she loves her buddies sm even tho she bickers with them. shes just very special. she fits well with knuckles in a way that makes their relationship actually feel plausible instead of just forcing him to have a girlfriend (tho ofc the writing is fumbled sometimes like. ITS ARCHIE. bffr. but thats the case with literally everything ever in archie so you take what you can and its amazing). also see below. BASED AS FUCKKKKKKK

and ill discuss my au briefly bc u r asking me my opinion on js and that does play a large role in how i feel abt her, but rly im just expanding on elements of her story that werent discussed as fully as i wouldve liked. her relationship with lien-da is obviously BAD in canon, but theres not a lot of time spent lingering on precisely how lien-da and kragok feel about julie-su as the product of their fathers second marriage to a woman they KILLED because they hated her so much. ive also given her much more internal strife over turning away from the legion, originally joining the chaotix planning to betray them from the inside then being slowly convinced to join them for real after realizing how much she'd been brainwashed by the legion and what its like to have people who truly love and care about you. her story as someone who is trying to find herself outside of her history as a child soldier is something that TOTALLY deserves to be expanded on and its a bit sad that it wasnt explored. but i mean really im not changing her actual PERSONALITY at all because as i discussed shes oozing with it.... im honestly never going to make the full comic i wanted to so at some point im just going to compile all the lore and concept art and stuff into one big post to share. but thats like a spoiler free taste.

she also has a gun. which is fucking awesome because not enough sonic characters have guns. people make shadow the guy with a gun but he hasnt been seen with one since shth. hello....

Each wiki I go to has Lien-Da and Kragok as different ages. They’re either listed as 40 or 50. We know Luger was quite a bit on the old side when he had Julie. The only certain source I’ve seen is from an issue saying that the twins were 18 when she was born. Was Luger old with the twins too?

Dang, why are the ages so difficult to figure out. If Julie is 16 that would make the twins around 34. So they’re young-ish?!

No wonder Luger didn’t spend time with them, they could’ve been his grandchildren. XD

This is kind of out of the blue, but as an Archie Sonic Echidna expert, I think you have a better idea of how the Twilight Zone works than I do, so I wanted to ask you if you know when the Dark Legion under Luger invaded Echidnaopolis. The timeline’s kind of screwy like that and, admittedly, I’ve been wondering how Lien-Da would’ve been closer to Sonic and company’s age group, if she arrived on Mobius earlier than she did. I know that something like 25 years passed for the Legion per generation, and Remington grew into an adult while Kragok was likewise close enough to his age, but it’s hard to figure out, you know?

On some level I'm not sure if I should even be doing this one because it's literally been waiting for so long that the account who asked me is deactivated (I'M SO SORRY) and I STILL don't know enough to answer this, which is why I didn't answer it in the first place. I always planned to look this up and give a really solid answer, but I'm so sorry I just have absolutely nothing.

People seem to regard me as an expert on echidna lore, I'm assuming, because of my Brotherhood stories. The catch with that though is that those stories ignore like 90% of canon lore because I decided [the canon in question] was stupid/didn't work/was inefficient/I just simply didn't like it. I can answer lots of questions in incredible detail about the lore I made up, but when it comes to the actual canon comic books, the truth is that I haven't even read most of the ones that would answer these sorts of questions -- and the ones I have were read when I was like 10 years old, so, A VERY LONG TIME AGO. Given that the bulk of canon echidna lore in the Archie comics happens during the Dark Ages, I also have exactly zero interest in reading them now, because I have better things to do with my time than inflict psychic damage on myself.

So uh, I guess I'm "answering" this message mostly as a PSA to those of you that do still send me mail and are tempted to ask me stuff like this. Make no mistake, I am NOT the person to be asking canon Archie stuff to; you want @robotnik-mun for that! But if you have questions about how I, personally, as a writer, would handle [x] from the comics, or how [y] functions in the stories I do already write, or if I have ideas for fixing [z] in the canon, definitely send me those! It's not that I don't want to answer your comic canon questions, it's just that I'm extremely ill-equipped and it takes me months to realize I never did the research to answer the message you sent me months ago.

AU Luger for a RP - he survived the blast, and built himself back up with parts from the supply dock that he was 'decimated' in.

The idea is to make a mirror to Locke, to see how Knuckles and Julie-Su would navigate a similar situation - "I thought you died, but you're still alive, and you've been hiding in the shadows watching me this whole time".

... And to antagonise Lien-Da. Ahahaa. This would mess her up.

It just adds so many ways to explore the characters in-depth, so it seemed like great fun. Plus, I really like Luger.

For the Knuckles ship thing, who is Julie?

Julie-Su was a character from the preboot Archie Sonic comics.

Be warned, info dump incoming because I love talking about Archie Sonic lore.

She was the daughter of Grandmaster Luger of the Dark Legion, a large group of echidnas who basically worshipped technology, started by Luger’s grandfather Menniker. After Menniker’s death by explosion his son, Moritori Rex, took over for a while. Luger came along and had two kids with his first wife, Merin-Da, them being Kragok and Lien-da, who saw Moritori as their father instead of Luger because Luger lacked the usual ruthlessness of his father and grandfather. Then Luger remarried after his first wife died and along came Julie-Su.

At some point the second wife, Mari-Su (I wish I was joking about her name), was murdered by Kragok and Lien-Da, the two eventually following this up by killing Luger and erasing Julie-Su’s memories at least twice in her life while they took over as Grandmaster and Kommisar respectively (Moritori was busy impersonating Guardian Tobor for years at this time). Eventually Menniker’s father, Dimitri, was freed from his prison (long story in itself, chaos god shenanigans) and took over as Grandmaster. During this time Julie-Su defected from the Dark Legion after meeting Knuckles (this plot point was handled really stupidly).

Anyway, Dimitri becomes Knuckles’ arch-nemesis because the whole Grandmaster vs Guardian thing is a blood-fued stemming over 300 years ago after Menniker blamed Dimitri’s brother, Edmund, for his father’s “death” (again, chaos god shenanigans). Eventually Edmund was appointed the first Guardian and was killed shortly after. His son, Steppenwolf, became the second Guardian and the first who actually knew how to fight. Steppenwolf sent the Dark Legion to the Twilight Zone (no, I’m not joking, that was the legit name), where time moved much, much more slowly. Over the years the Dark Legion would break out, fight the current Guardian, and get sent back. Every time there’d be several generations of Guardians since the last they encountered because again, time moving slowly in that zone.

Zooming back to the then present day, Knuckles is the current Guardian and Julie-Su is by his side (until legal shit happened in real life).

Fastfowarding by 30 years, the two have a daughter, Lara-Su. There are two recurring time lines where Julie-Su is seen:

Dark Mobius, where Knuckles went off the deep end, took over the Dark Legion, and conquered the world, decimating most of the population. Here Julie-Su lied to Lara-Su to protect her from the truth by claiming Knuckles was killed in the line of duty. This prompted Lara-Su to try time traveling, ending up in Mobius Prime by accident, and save Knuckles only to be sent back home against her will. The truth comes out, Lara-Su joins the resistance force against her father, loses her mother to him, and eventually teams up with Silver to free her world.

Light Mobius, where Knuckles went off the deep end but was stopped and lost an eye. Here’s where it gets tricky; there are two versions of Light Mobius. In the unaltered timeline, which never went past 25 years and was collapsing in on itself, Lara-Su is friends with Sonic and Sally’s kids, Sonia (older) and, albeit reluctantly, Manik (younger). She temporarily gets erased from existence when Sonic tries going back in time. She reappears in the altered time line with her memories somewhat intact. Shenanigans ensue, she takes down Shadow, and becomes the new Guardian, doubling as a babysitter five years later for Sonia and Manik, the two reborn as twins. In the unaltered time line Julie-Su has been reduced to a home-maker house-girlfriend (they go out of their way to state that marriage isn’t for Knuckles or Julie-Su). In the altered time line Julie-Su only has two brief appearances but she actively travels with Knuckles to negotiate peace among separatist groups and Mobius’ monarchy.

[CANON]

Many years prior, in the settling depths of the rubble, a strange blessing had taken place; or perhaps, it were a curse. The experimental weapon which had intended to atomise Luger, had indeed torn him to pieces. The mauve echidna was torn apart, atom by atom. He caught a glimpse in this moment of his daughter, holding the trigger, watching as this strange weapon imploded in on her. The next thing he remembered was a searing, blinding whiteness. Each atom of this fine, Lugerish mist, had been transported, one by one, into the wilderness of the zone. In an instant, he had been transposed, painstakingly rebuilt out in the wilderness of The Twilight Zone. The process had felt worse than death itself; for a short moment, he drifted, wishing that it had finished him off. Then... Calm. Shortly after, the freezing cold of the inter-void had taken to his very bones. It was only now, in this calm after the accident, that he realised the still-searing pain covering his body, as if his very being had been stapled into. Transported with him, was a heap tonne of metal parts, intended to be implanted with delicate care onto the many members of the Legion. They had been carelessly fused into him as his very being was transmogrified, wrapping around his very soul.

He was truly, fully, a cyborg.

Luger spent the next four years fighting through the Zone towards their former base of their operations, setting up in the depths. He had only intended to spy in for a moment, then reclaim his throne; but something about the way that his son, Kragok, had been running the place, seeing his youngest daughter pushed around by his eldest daughter, he chose to keep watching, waiting. He slowly reached out to Simon, his old left-hand-man, and got the fill-in. From thereon, he reckoned that he would take a leaf out of the Brotherhood of Guardians' modus operandi, hiding in the shadows, influencing from afar. Those who had caught glimpses of him reckoned that they'd seen ghosts.

And now, in the present day, he found himself on Mobius Prime. The old Legion base was destroyed, and the new base was hardly more than a settlement of tents. He kept watch as the changing tides of the political scape changed rapidly. He wondered, was it finally time to walk out into the world?
