I know I’ve mentioned this before but it’s never gotten it’s own post so, how social standing is determined among Osmosians.
~~
There are three factors at play- Personal Reputation (are you trustworthy, are you true, do you behave as an Ossy ought?), Profession/Work (what do you bring to your community?), Clan Reputation (what sort’ve people make up your family?). A simple way to explain it would be to put each factor as a scale from 0-100, with one’s social standing being represented by the average between them.
We’ll do two examples, one from each end of the social ladder.
Devin (pre-death)
Personal Reputation- Pretty high, he was community-and-family-oriented, very trustworthy, a good man, though he was only so-so as far as actually getting shit done pre-death, got a bit involved with the wrong crowd (*cough*Eva*cough*), and wasn’t considered entirely sensible- 82
Profession/Work- Middling, being a Plumber isn’t considered a good profession for various reasons, but he also acted as the nearest thing his tiny pack had to one of the Holyfolk, which bumps shit up some- 37
Clan Reputation- Incredibly high, he’s a member of the Imperial Clan, which is pretty much required to have a damn good reputation otherwise they’d get deposed, there’s whole systems in place for it- 94
‘Social Standing’ Rating- 71
Mike
Personal Reputation- Well, he’s not trustworthy, he’s not well behaved, he’s certainly bright and capable enough, and if you can get him working with you he does fine, but he hunts and keeps people via manipulation and what seems to be either magic or addictive venom, but he doesn’t have a record for murder and doesn’t seem to hunt children, so it could be worse- 21
Profession/Work- What does the boy even bring to his community as of canon, nothing, all Michaels do anymore is eat people, run cults, and lie- 0
Clan Reputation- He’s actually from a rather well regarded clan, so he’s at least got that going for him, they’re mostly farmers which isn’t one of the most well viewed professions amongst a carnivorous species, but Mike himself is one of the worst marks on their reputation- 79
‘Social Standing’ Rating- 33
As you can see, Devin was considered a little lower on the social ladder than you would expect with his reputation and his family because being a Plumber drags him down. Meanwhile, despite having a crap reputation and bringing literally nothing positive to the people around him, Mike’s social standing isn’t as bad as you would think due solely to the good reputation of his family as a whole.
Though I should state that Mike’s rating there isn’t actually accurate. I just did it that way for the sake of showing you how it works. As of the show he, along with the rest of what I term the Plumber Spawn, is not yet an adult by Osmosian reckoning, and the full set-up is only for adults. Individuals under 20 don’t yet have a profession, or any particular work they do, and so both lack a title (excepting royal or holy ones, but those are their own thing and don’t normally effect standing) and have their standing determined only by their and their clan’s reputations. As you can guess this means they tend to be of a higher social standing than adults on average, though they’re normally considered on their own little chart of sorts. Mike’s actual ‘score’ prior to turning 20 would be about 50, so, low for somebody underage who isn’t from an absolute shithole clan, but middling overall due to his youth and the clan’s good standing.
Each of these is subjective to a point as well, especially the Profession/Work factor. That one can change depending on where you are and how good you are at what you do. Someone who grows food crops is going to be better held in a region where you can grow enough to properly supplement the pack’s diet and don’t have a wide variety of forage options than they would be somewhere with plentiful forage or where crops make up a seriously low percentage of the diet. And both cases so far of a deposed Emperor have been preceded by such failures in their work that it drove that ‘score’ down past forgivable levels (plus a shit personal reputation in the first one’s case).
As far as reputation goes, as you would expect one’s reputation is directly correlated with how willing people are to work with them as individuals, or with a clan. Given two options, most are going to go for the one with the better reputation, and if your reputation is bad enough even if you’re the only option in town people may just go without or travel for their needs. People may even choose to avoid bartering with you when you come to them. Between this and the effect on overall social standing, maintaining a good reputation is considered of key importance among Osmosians. This is a large part of why Osmosian criminals are normally placed under house arrest with their clan, not only do they have a vested interest in restoring their clanmate’s reputation since it directly ties to their own, but to fake it would be another blow to their reputation, and this one to the clan directly.
If your cousin is arrested for hunting people, and you say ‘yeah we’ve worked that shit out, he’s all good’, let him out in public, and he starts hunting people again? Your clan’s reputation, and with it the standing of every member, tanks.
‘But what does social standing determine, Achi?’ I hear you ask.
As with all cultures, it’s mostly commonly in how you’re treated. People with a higher social standing’s words are taken more seriously than those of someone with a lower standing. If you’re looking to speak to someone important, then you’ll get a meeting ahead of someone with lower standing than yourself and vis versa. The normal things.
Where it most strongly comes into play, however, is in emergencies- from natural disaster to famine to epidemic. In these circumstances, the order in which aid is given is often determined by social standing. For this purpose communities are typically divided into groups by age and granted assistance group by group.
These groups, in order of assistance, are- Children Outside the Creche, Crechebound Children, Teenagers, and Adults. For the children, they all get assistance in equal order, for teens and adults individuals with a higher social standing receive aid first (though the first ones often are the ones making sure they go with less for the sake of the others in their group, because there’s normally a reason you end up that well regarded). So, you see, a whole new reason to want to maintain social standing.
And, that’s about what I’ve got, so... to finish up we’re going to do Underage and Adult numbers for Kevin and Alan, because I love them. Only numbers this time though, rather than going in-depth in to the ‘why’s like before.
