Every major city have one of those famed sweet delights tied to each cities stories romanticism. #Istanbul No.253 // Beyoğlu. Starting on the northern shore of the Golden Horn, the historic Tünel underground funicular takes you from Karaköy below the hill to the station on top, Beyoğlu. Beyoğlu is where the modern heart of Istanbul sits. The street leads from Galata Tower to Taksim Square and beyond. The highlight of Beyoğlu is really the more modern side of food, shopping, hotels and the likes. The epicentre of entertainment, crossroads of fun. I left Beyoğlu last, simply to take that path of history from the days of Constantine himself to the present day of the republic. #Istanbul No.252 // The Camondo stairs, Karaköy. A staircase adjacent to the former bank of the Ottomons that surprisingly sport an art nouveau design. It’s the reason why Karaköy is truly a hidden architectural gem of the city. The street it sits were formerly the Wall Street of Istanbul. All the major banks of the empire used to be headquartered here hence became patrons of art and philanthropy, financing major architectural works such as the stairs. When I imagine Istanbul, my mind draws the frame of Byzantine, Roman or even Ottomon architectures that tend to be the star of the city. But right here in Karaköy, zig-zagging across the hill, sits an imprint of the 19th century art nouveau that would make even Antoni Gaudi proud.
