I think the triumph of Love Run is in how freaking weird it is. Remember that this came out years before The Witcher propelled Joey Batey into the spotlight, so they put themselves out there with no expectation of a ready audience beyond their local music scene. Yet they never tried to play it safe, never even considered taming the wildness of their art to make themselves more palatable to more people. There are overlapping lyrics, multi-layered metaphors, and a single feral music video where a band with "devil" in its name shouts "All hell and its fire waits for us." If that's not a giant middle finger raised towards the very notion of "playing it safe," then I don't know what is.
Love Run is bold, story-driven, unapologetically complex music, and it doesn't shy away from asking listeners to put in the effort to dig deeper. It rewards careful attention rather than easy consumption, and the incredible vulnerability on display invites the same in response. I love it to pieces but I can see why some people would find it too difficult, too chaotic, or too strange. I can see where other producers would've told them to tone it down or make it less complicated. I'm grateful that they didn't. I'm grateful that they fought to make the kind of music they wanted, trusting that it would find the kind of people who needed it. And here we are. <3

For the song asks, hmmm Pruning Shears and 6?
6. What stories or characters (or even real people) are connected to this song in your mind?
This is one of the songs where I never really had a connection to an actual story before, mostly just vibes. Ballgowns and chandeliers and cigarettes and laundromats and the house my family stayed at when we went to Scotland when I was 15. But I just listened to it again with this question in mind and the characters that immediately popped into my mind were.. kinda OCs? They're characters from an incredibly self-indulgent daydream about a princess and her maid falling in love (that will never be written down anywhere ever). The intersection of the fancy vibes of chandeliers, champagne and company shares and the mundanaty of roundabouts and doing the laundry in the song hits a similar spot for me than the part of that daydream where the princess learns about the maids life.
Like I said, these characters will only ever exist in my mind but I will definitely revisit them with this song in mind :) Thank you so much for asking and creating that list! <3 These questions make me engage with the album and each song in a completely new way and it's so wonderful. Thank you!

I know I already sent two asks for the game, but how about one more? I'm on a Pruning Shears posting spree and I remember how much you love that one. So: Pruning Shears and 1 and 10?
Pruning Shears is my favourite (I don't have a favourite, they are all my favourite but if I had to pick only 1 favourite it's that)
What was your first impression of this song (and has it changed)?
My first impression was 'oh jeez they are talking at the same time again' and pulling up bandcamp so I could read the lyrics along with the singing.
10. When recommending this song to other people, how would you describe it?
I...usually don't recommend it. Not because I don't adore it down to the marrow, just because it's such a WEIRD song. If you're unfamiliar with TAD, then the two people singing at the same time can be confusing. Heck even if you are familiar with them it can get confusing (I thought an Oil Lick was a cocktail, I had never heard of Horlicks, WHY WOULD YOU DRINK HORLICKS MADELEINE PURE MALT IS SO GROSS IS IT A HANGOVER REMEDY, so I misheard that for AGES) If I were to recommend it, I would do so with Drinking Song For The Socially Anxious: songs about not fitting in at a party and finding the only other person who doesn't fit in and making a connection.

The anniversary of Love Run is approaching, and I have an idea for how to celebrate!
You know those lyric videos where the whole song is written in AO3 fic titles (like this, this, and this)? We’re pretty close to being able to do this for several songs from the album. It would be really cool if we could manage to make that happen around the anniversary!
These are the lines from King, Elsa’s Song, and Not Yet / Love Run that have not been used as titles yet. They need stories! Feel free to use as a promptlist, or just claim a line and start writing. No pressure, obviously -- I just thought this could be a fun way to celebrate!
Reblogs/signal boosting would be much appreciated <3
King
When you are gone away
As our boat is untethered from the dock
There’ve been times I know
I’ll stand up up up at the bow
And the waves of our bodies and the smell of our follies
You fumble through the dark
To the light that you keep burning there (all hell)
I know your fingernails are the colour of rust (come back)
And your veins are empty of dust (but our voices)
The wind and its shackles, the old fishers tackles
Elsa’s Song
I can hear the cannons calling
Around this muddied lot
I cannot hear them scream
Cos although you say good day to me
That I barely know the meaning
And all the cannons shot
And in years to come you’ll wander
And then you’ll cry to our painted sky
And you’ll strew some sage and lilies
And roses where I rot
Not Yet/Love Run
By hook or by crooked look give me land
The oh’s of your screams still echo in yer dreams
I’ll point you steer
It seems oh it seems / To me / That you / You can’t sleep
Grab the stroud
It’s time to fight don’t be yellow bellied
Hold the bar at Hurley's hurly burly's
Out of pillows and get drunk again
It seems oh it seems / To me / That you / You can’t dance / For shit
If my old mum could see me now
Oh how she’d howl she’d howl
Don’t turn 'round
O let the earth a-tumble, love
And humble you withal, keep running
Let foul men band and heed your hum
For that ancient hymn you heard me strumming?
Is nought but fumble-falls and guns / And tumbleweeds.
It's nought that rum won't solve
Though some would harm you, none - not one - no none / Will raise to you a hand nor thumb.

I can't count how many times I've listened to Two Minutes, and every damn time, I'm still blown away by how well Joey Batey conveys so much sheer ache in his voice, so much exhaustion and resignation, so much weary acceptance of the fact that your life can shatter apart around you but you still have responsibilities, you still have to stand up and get going and act like you know what the next steps are. Madeleine floating her voice into the melody, all ethereal and lovely, only emphasizes how weighed down by bitterness and pain he sounds, how very very human and wounded and cracked. There is so much character work going on in this performance, and I can't ever imagine this song being done justice by a different singer who isn't the caliber of actor that Joey is.

THIS ALBUM HAS EVERYTHING. Kings and pirates and pillow dens. Showers and laundry and New York City. War and wallpaper and watching Netflix. Honestly, what more could you want?
Happy anniversary, Love Run!

Hey, just curious, what's the state of titles for the love run as ao3 titles?
Thank you so much for asking, anon! Both King and Not Yet / Love Run are very close to having a fic on AO3 for every part of the song -- only two lines each! The remaining lines that cannot be written in AO3 titles are below:
King
And your veins are empty of dust
The old fishers tackles
Not Yet / Love Run
Hold the bar at Hurley's hurly burly's (I've got a WIP for this one)
Let foul men band and heed your hum
If anyone is interested in writing fics with these lines as titles, please do so! I would love to start putting together a lyric video once all the lines are used.
Here is the original post, for anyone who's wondering :)

The room where it happened ("it" being Two Minutes by The Amazing Devil)
On the Bandcamp page for Two Minutes, waaay down at the bottom, there's this note:
Tumblr media
So I looked it up, and The Coach and Horses bills itself as "Soho's most famous pub" and its Wikipedia page has some info about its history and famous clientele. Francis Bacon, The Beatles, okay sure, but what I really care about is the piano:

This is it. This is the scene of the crime where The Amazing Devil shattered our hearts into a million pieces. And here's Joey himself caught in the act:
Tumblr media
I've been looking through the song's tag and it seems like so many of our imagined visuals fit pretty well with the scene. I think that's neat.
More photos from the pub's gallery here. The last one from TAD's FB.

Hello~
I finished my little ficlet with the title "Let Foul Men Band and Heed Your Hum" for the Love Run lyric video <3
https://archiveofourown.org/works/44168611
Wonderful!! Unless I've missed one, that means that we have all the lines needed for Not Yet / Love Run!
We also only have one line to go for King: "the old fisher's tackles". So close!
(Also, I was testing out some technical things with the song Ruin and I realized we're very close to being able to do one of these with that too! The only lines missing are "You hurled curses at the land" and "I said fewer". If anyone wants to use those as titles, absolutely go for it!)
(My original post about this, for anyone curious)

Folk musicians have always employed drama to tell a story but this evening’s storytelling is more than engaging. It’s a genuinely immersive experience in which the audience, which packs this tiny club, is sucked into the vortex created by the on-stage – and off – stage antics of the band. Hyland, part-witch, part-lunatic, throws herself bodily to the ground, where she continues to sing on her back, without missing a note. It’s the sheer exuberance of the musicianship, and the beautiful quality to Hyland’s voice that allows her to get away with it
- This Devil has some of the best tunes (Tribune Magazine review of a live performance of Love Run)
