Samira laid flat on her back on her bed, arms splayed open at her sides, staring up at her bedroom ceiling. She hadn’t bothered to get undressed and knew she was probably putting wrinkles in the dress only the dry cleaners would be able to smooth out, but she couldn’t bring herself to care.

The last forty-eight hours of her life had been a total whirlwind and the immediate future looked to promise more of the same.

Bzzz! Her phone vibrated on her nightstand. She rolled her head to look at it, debating on whether or not to check the notification. It could have easily been a new email or a shipping update, but something told her that probably wasn’t the case.

After Sally had called off the wedding, Samira had bolted.

Things had just been starting to settle down. She and Taylor had made plans to go to dinner that night after all the wedding festivities, and she was satisfied because Taylor was sweet and unsurprisingly, he looked so damn good in a suit. But then Sally called off the wedding and she knew things were about to get complicated again.

Of course, she was glad Hugo and Sally weren’t getting married. Even if she wasn’t necessarily Sally’s biggest fan, she and Hugo both deserved more than they were giving each other. Samira was glad that Sally wasn’t letting her stubbornness stand in the way of their happiness, but what would that mean going forward?

Hugo had made it pretty clear that he was marrying Sally out of commitment, not because that’s where his heart truly lay, and now that he was no longer bound by that obligation, would he want to try for real? Now that they actually had the opportunity to, did she want to?

And then there was Taylor. Now that Sally was single, would he want to see where things could go between the two of them? Had she and Taylor settled for each other because their first choices were unavailable?

Bzzzz! Her phone vibrated again.

With a heavy sigh, she rolled over, reaching for it. She knew she was gonna drive herself insane if she kept speculating what could happen. Might as well get some kind of answer if it was one of them.

Swiping her thumb across the screen, she had two new messages from Hugo.

She used her thumb to unlock her phone and waited for the app to load, clicking on the icon in the upper right-hand corner when it did.

Samira hadn’t been on Lovelink long before matching with Hugo. She’d gone on a few dates, one with a hot but flighty bartender with blue hair who’d left the country before they had a chance to go on a second date. She’d also gone for drinks with a beautiful woman who was professionally a cam girl. Their first date had gone so well, but Samira wasn’t sure if she could handle her lifestyle. Even though Eveline had told her there was no reason to be jealous, keeping those feelings at bay wasn’t always the easiest.

Then there was Adam, the charming photographer. Everything had been so great there at the beginning, and she’d thought Third time’s the charm, but then his crazy ass ex-girlfriend showed up, and Samira just couldn’t bring herself to stick around to see that drama through.

She’d almost given up; she was just about to uninstall the app, go the old-fashioned route and try to meet someone organically, when she and Hugo had matched. There was just something about the two boys smiling and having a good time that appealed to her. She’d always valued friendship, and theirs looked so genuine and pure. And, admittedly, she was curious as to which one of the cuties had been behind the profile.

So, she’d given them a chance, and things had gotten so crazy so quickly that she was really just taking notice that she hadn’t spoken to any of her other matches in over a month. The beginning of Adam’s last message read: Look, I’m sorry. Let me make it . . . but before she got any more dumb ideas, she clicked on her thread with Hugo and read:

Hey

Considering all that’s happened that probably wasn’t the best way to start this conversation off. Let me start by saying this is Sally, btw

Samira sat up quickly, her head temporarily spinning, though it was hard to say if it was because of the change in position or because of who was contacting her.

This felt like a trap. Sally messaging her from Hugo’s account, which meant she could see alllll of their previous messages, including all the flirting and suggestive texts, that had been sent while they were still very much engaged.

Samira dropped her phone as if it had bitten her and scooted as far away as she could. Shaking her head, she knew she should’ve just deleted the app and wiped her hands clean of the situation, but her stupid heart couldn’t quite let go, and now she was about to get (rightly) cussed out for being a duplicitous homewrecker.

Her phone buzzed once more, muted by the softness of her sheets. Craning her neck, she could see a new message on the screen.

Leaning over, she read: I can see that you read my message, Samira

She was going to leave a strongly worded review for the app makers about the importance of being able to turn off one’s read receipts, since it currently wasn’t an available settings’ option.

Scooping her phone back up, her fingers hovered over the keyboard, trying to figure out what to type. An apology seemed like a good place to start, but that would mean admitting she was guilty—which she was—but maybe that wasn’t the best place to start.

Instead, she said: Umm, hi?

Hi, Samira. How are you?

. . . Confused, tbh. I feel like I should be asking you that

A chat bubble appeared on the screen to indicate she was typing back. About two minutes passed before a block of text filled the screen.

I’m okay, all things considered. I realize most of what happened was my fault. To say I was being stubborn would be an understatement, but you have to realize how hard it was to admit that Hugo and I were not good for each other anymore after 10 years together. I kept thinking that if we got married, we could somehow make it work. But at the church, I looked at all my friends and family, at my parents and grandparents, and realized Hugo and I would never have the kind of happiness they did because I didn’t love him that way anymore

Samira wasn’t quite sure how to respond to that, but another chat bubble popped up on the screen. She’d wait until Sally was finished saying her piece before replying.

Hugo doesn’t know I’m in his account, btw. He’s been using the same password since we were in high school, and I couldn’t stop myself from sneaking a peek.

This is the first time I’ve ever logged in since he told me he signed up to try and help Taylor out. I trusted him when he said that’s all this was, and he stayed true to his word. He didn’t use this as an excuse to cheat on me or talk to other women. You were his only match.

And, yeah, I looked through your messages. Invasive, I know, but I needed to know if I was just being paranoid and possessive or if what I’d pick up on between you and Hugo was real.

From what I read, it’s clear that you care about him and he cares about you. And I’m not upset. I’m actually glad that when this is all said and done, he’ll have someone in his corner because Hugo’s a good guy and that’s the least he deserves

“Ughhh!” Samira groaned, dropping her head back against her headboard with a thud. Either Sally was a master manipulator or she was being genuine. Their conversation had seemed too sincere for her to be making any underhanded comments to purposefully make Samira feel bad, but maybe one of the guys had caught up with her and told her everything. Maybe this was all payback. Maybe—

You’re spiraling again, she thought to herself.

Taking a few deep breaths, she replied: I do care about Hugo. I don’t know what the future holds for us, but I hope, despite whatever may happen, he and I are able to remain friends . . . But what about you? What’s the future hold for Sally?

🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ Idk. For so long, I’ve had this plan to get married, buy a house, have a kid or two, but still be a successful working mom. While I’d still like that to be my future, for the first time, I don’t feel like I’m on a timeline, you know? I now have the time to just be me, to figure who Sally is and what she wants. Who knows? Maybe I’ll find out I want a whole different path for myself

You deserve that, Samira said, truly meaning it. While she and Sally may not have been real friends, she believed everyone deserved a shot at happiness . . . which sometimes meant sacrificing your own bliss for someone else’s. What about Taylor?

I don’t think it’s our time, Sally replied. I care about him a lot, but I don’t wanna turn around and hop back into another relationship. I wanna live the single life! Flirt with hot guys! Maybe kiss a cute girl or two!

The little green light beside Hugo’s profile picture went from green to gray. With a heavy sigh, Samira slunk back down so she was lying flat on her back again, arms wide at her side, staring up at her bedroom ceiling.
