The next step is action.” Gentrification seems like such an overlooked issue and I’m glad @louisaonome brought attention to it through the wonderful novel. To think that neighborhoods (minority ones specifically) are subjugated to increases in rent is a scary thing. Nelo, the fierce main character, made me smile, shake my head, and nod at her bravery, Her resilience, and her willingness to keep her beloved neighborhood free from the stereotypes that people place on the community in Ginger East. The story not only develops Nelo’s character (ghetto fabulous in a subdued Nigerian way), but also her best friend Kate (who loves creating mixtapes) as well as Rafa (a soccer player that gets on Nelo’s nerves and who catches her interest) and Bo (an anime loving boy with messy cornrows and thick bifocals), friends who have grown distant due to moving away and finding their own circles. You’ll never feel bored whether they’re talking mess about Sol Cousins or roasting each other over their crushes. And you’ll love them as they gravitate back to each other due to a new store being built that’ll bring in the rich and draw out the poor. Authentic dialogue, fierce characters, and friendship, I loved every word of this book. I highly recommend! Think twice before you judge a community from the outside.
