So, since recently we've been revisiting the topic of 13 essentially confessing to Yaz that she loved her, just not in those exact words...
And because I've been meaning to do this anyway for a coupla weeks now but I've been lazy, plus at times I wasn't sure I'd find the right words to express myself properly...
I'd like now to revisit what (to me personally) is the closet thing to an ILY that 13 ever said:
Tumblr media
For the Doctor, the concept of "forever" is more real, more concrete, than it is for the rest of us. Her own memories of her past lives stretch back thousands of years, and based on the events of TTC she's potentially billions of years old, possibly older than the universe itself.
She might continue on for billions more years, outliving the universe, outliving time, going on and on... quite literally...forever.
So when the Doctor says the word "forever" in this context, it isn't the same as when we mortals use it. For her, "forever" is a very real possibility.
And if she could, she would spend that "forever" with Yaz.
Until time itself runs out, and even beyond that, she would choose to be with Yaz.
That is commitment on a scale we simply cannot conceive of. And in it's own way, "I wish this would go on forever" is just about the biggest confession of love she could possibly make.

Things that I appreciate about 13th era that I never see talked about:
Jodie doing a Lunar New Year video
Everyone in Sea Devils being cast respectfully to their/the characters ethnicity, not just going "well they're Asian so close enough". (+ the director was British-Chinese)
Thirteen wearing a gorgeous (masculine) cheongsam jacket - my heart SANG when I saw that, that's how you do cultural exchange/appreciation correctly, I'm still on cloud nine about it.
Bel is so fucking cool. "Love is the mission" is a banger line.
The show has a history of being genuinely racist towards East Asians and generally ignoring/erasing us so I treasure Chibs' era for this, I felt so seen and included for the first time.
This is the great thing about the Chibnall era people who hadn't really seen themselves in the show before got to, and they adore the episodes where they see that rep, like the Sea Devils or TTC where lots of people who were adopted saw themselves. I think thats a beautiful thing, and something I appreciated about the era, it doesnt need to be something I see myself in I just love that lots of different people got to see themselves.
But honestly its seems like the wider fandom can never praise anything that they cant personally see them, they would rather drag it down and pretend theres nothing good there.
Also I think the show was really trying to be more open to everyone and bring more people in and do things right and get the right people in the room to make the stories etc. Maybe they didn't always get it right but I believe they were always trying, and you can't ask for much more then that because thats how people get better at these things, by doing them even if they have a mis-steps and then learning and trying again..
I'm really glad 13 era who tried to go further than just British history, so more people could see themselves in the show and have the show explore their history. There are so many other countries with rich and interesting histories! Hopefully Legend of the Sea Devils is only the first episode exploring Asia and the wider region and not the last!

there is something beautiful, and so real, about the way that yaz fell in love with the doctor. they say that yaz's love came from nowhere, but it didn't. it came from those little quirks the doctor has, and the way her face lights up when she sees a biscuit. it came from late nights on a tardis, and unspoken words behind heartfelt speeches. it came from stolen glances and slight touches. it came from the promise of an infinity at the side of a mad, incredible woman. this love, it buried itself in the darkest parts of yaz's heart and settled there, growing ever so slightly, until all she could see was the doctor. it did not come from nowhere, it came from the moments we had missed, and it grew until we could not deny it anymore.
their story didn't start as one of passion, longing and unwavering love. it started as a crush, one that yaz didn't even realize, and it turned into something so beautiful and real.
i don't understand why people struggle so much to accept that yaz loves the doctor. how can we not expect her to fall in love with the doctor? falling in love with the impossible was the most human thing she could've done.

“I wish this would go on forever.”
Last thasmin art of the era. These two changed my life back in 2018. In four years, I went from being very anxious about drawing and posting queer fanart to seeing it published in a magazine. I never thought I’d see myself reflected so clearly in Doctor Who. Truthfully, I didn’t even realize just how much of myself I needed to see until the 13th Doctor and Yasmin Khan showed me, individually and together. They’ve been a massive comfort to me through the worst years of my life. I’m a better artist and person because of this era and this story. 💙💙

The LotSD episode just hits different. The Doctor is different. She looks happier, more open and I just love how she acts around Yaz. How she looks after her, how she flirts with her (intentional or unintentional). It's like the Doctor had forger that she's dying and all she wanted was to be happy and live of what she and Yaz had - love.
Even if the episode itself isn't the best, it's still one of my favourites, because of them.

I love the line in lotsd where The Doctor says "You can where I'm from." In response to: "You can't say your wish out loud." Because The Doctor has no bloody idea where she's from. She's just looking for an excuse to say her wish out loud, infront of Yaz. She's just looking for an excuse to let Yaz know that she loves her back.

OK so this moment, this exact moment...
Tumblr media
Between Yaz saying "no" and when her lips start to curl upwards into a smile...
This was the moment Yaz truly accepted in her heart that she loved the Doctor, that she was in love with the Doctor, and that there existed the chance that the Doctor would have those same feelings towards her.
So much meaning in the space of about two seconds.

It’s amazing we already have a 14th doctor action figure but not one of the Spymaster, the Fugitive Doctor, Dan, Ashad, Kavanista, Swarm and Azure, 13 in the Tux, the Doctor, Yaz and Dan from Legend of the Sea Devils.
FFS, seriously you can get a single action figure of Graham and a Judoon but none of these iconic characters and costumes?! Why?
And where is my Yaz funko pop! And since it’s taken so long I would like a black leather jacket one with a chase variant with the yellow jacket from PotD!

I love how Thirteen is all sad and moody like “if I could date anyone it would be you but I can’t and we can’t and we’ll never know how that feels because the universe and my own fear of being hurt are standing in the way of us going on a date and being happy” literally like 20 minutes after she busted her ass to fly the Tardis to the bottom of the ocean for the most romantic date where she was putting her whole scronch face into impressing Yaz and flirting her pants off and was literally five seconds from kissing her before she chickened out

thinking about the underwater date again and about how after 13th almost joke-ish "not a bad date am i?" yaz doesn't joke back or brush the answer off but honestly answers with her quiet "no".
she's so much more brave that i've thought about her before (not that i've ever thought that yaz is not brave; she is, she very much is but this moment...). imagine you're standing in front of a 2000+ years old alien creature that's "seen more, loved more, lost more". the creature that is so like... infinite, so much more than just a friend someone you'll put on a pedestal and still STILL after this "not a bad date am i :D" you don't hesitate you don't go silent but you're honest and you admit something (that you didn't even want to admit to yourself a couple of hours/days ago). it's not "did dan tell you to say that" or "no you certainly is a bad date, we could've drowned!!!" or "where's the ship tho?" no it's an HONEST answer.
it makes me respect chibnall's writing more with each rewatch bc yaz IS special but in ordinary/everyday things you wouldn't think as special before moments like this. bc like admitting your feelings is huge but normal but admitting them to the doctor?
Tumblr media
i wonder about how/will this lead to something in potd? in a way of yaz being brave one last time.
