Vetto: You humans stole our magic!
Fana: You stole our lives!
Rhya: And worse yet you stole our pronouns!
Yami: I'm sorry but what the hell are you talking about?
Patry: Where you do you think you got words like "mysELF," "hersELF," or "themsELVES"? From the elves!
Asta: Oh gods! Why is humanity so greedy?!

The Curse of the Four Leaf Clover
So one evening I was talking with my sister and friends. I don’t remember why exactly but my sister had brought up carrying around lucky charms. Among the lucky charms she brought up four-leaf clovers and I jokingly went “you probably shouldn’t.” I had kinda forgotten that no one besides me in the group was into Black Clover.
Either way, my sister asked why four-leaf clovers weren’t lucky. I quickly explained the lore of grimoires and clovers in BC then gave brief overviews of each wielder of a four-leaf grimoire.
Licht lost his entire tribe of people and had to turn himself into a giant demon to stop a devil from taking over his body. And when he’s resurrected, he has to fight the same devil.
Lumiere had to fight and kill his best friend (Licht). He probably didn’t know if his sister lived or died the day of that tragedy. Then his body turned to dust as he died.
Patry died as a child before he could get a grimoire and when he came back, it was all part of the devil’s plan. He got turned into a raging, mindless dark elf and permanently lost his grimoire.
Yuno lost his parents and kingdom as a baby. He grew up in poverty for most of his life. If Asta hadn’t come along, he would’ve had his grimoire stolen the day he got it. After becoming a Magic Knight, he’s bullied and harassed by his co-workers (Alecdora and Langris being the most prominent examples). Then when he learns of his royal origins, that same day his boss is kidnapped and half of his co-workers are killed.
And I didn’t bring this one up with my sister and friends but the elf soul that Yuno’s first grimoire actually belongs to is so unlucky that they didn’t even get out of the womb. Yikes.
Regardless, five-for-five, four-leaf grimoire wielders are met with misfortune.
But why would that be when four-leaf clovers are famous symbols of luck?
Well, maybe because Tabata is a Japanese man. Japanese and Western symbols of good luck aren’t the same. If you are the least bit familiar with Japanese language, homophones, and superstitions then you know where I’m going with this. In Japanese, the number “four” can be pronounced the same way as the word for “death.” Thus, four is unlucky.
Thus, we have our unlucky clovers.
I know what some people might be thinking. “But they’re all blessed by mana.” “Yuno is a prodigy.” “Patry was turned back to normal.”
Being blessed by mana didn’t make people agree with Licht and Lumiere’s vision of humans and elves living in harmony. The elves accepted Lumiere and Tetia but no other humans. They cursed the humans in their dying breaths.
Lumiere’s invention, which was meant to bring elven power and human ingenuity together, was used to massacre the elves. He watched his friend Secre curse herself with Weg to preserve his life.
Patry learned that he was being manipulated and that he hurt many innocents for nothing. He went against the beliefs of the one he admired for nothing. He believed he was meant for greatness because of his four-leaf but that was actually his downfall as his grimoire became Zagred’s five-leaf grimoire.
Yuno is put under so much pressure and is always on his own. He alone was the “hope of the church.” He was entrusted with responsibility even when Asta proclaimed his desire to help. Mimosa and Klaus are with him often but it always feels like they’re associating with him because they’re Asta’s friends, not Yuno’s. He was the only person able to solo a Dark Disciple and face Zenon for even a moment. And in the final battle against Zenon, Finral and Langris couldn’t be there to support him and Yuno had to face Zenon alone. No, the elf soul and Bell do not count because, let’s be real, both are little more than talking power-ups. All the pressure on Yuno is patially due to being “blessed” with the four-leaf grimoire.
Yuno being a prodigy, being vice captain at 17, and getting two grimoires are snazzy things but I chalk that up to him being Tabata’s most special and favorite child more than anything else./hj
When you really look at Licht, Lumiere, Patry, and Yuno, their lives are unfortunate. Triumphant moments and incredible power do not make up for the more personal misfortunes in their lives.
All of them had high expectations put upon them and all of them have been met with tragedy and failure. Patry and Yuno are alive and able to fight for a happy end but they’re in no way blessed. None of them are.
The four-leaf grimoire is not an omen of luck. It is an omen of death and despair for those who have one.

Dark Secrets
Scenarios wherein some of the Black Clover men reveal a dark secret to you and you let them know that you won't go anywhere because of it.
Characters: Julius Novachrono, William Vangeance, Nozel Silva, Morgen Faust, Nacht Faust
Genre: general, slight hurt/comfort
..........
Julius Novachrono
"It's of the utmost importance that you know."
Julius said that to you the day before he brought you out to one of the forests in the Forsaken Realm.
You are filled with concern and fear. You repeatedly ask for clarification but are only told that it's about his job. Is he going to take on a difficult mission? Is there some kind of threat made against him?
Then, Julius comes to a stop. On the ground in front of you, largely hidden by overgrowth, is a giant sphere bearing the same symbol that Julius had tattooed on his forehead.
"This magic tool stores mana to be used later," Julius begins to explain. "I discovered that it was compatible with my Time Magic and made use of that fact." Julius looks at you, his expression somber yet also apologetic. "This invention here is my contingency in case of a worst case scenario. But even if it does bring me back, I may not be at full power."
Julius takes you by the hand and squeezes it.
"I want to continue working as a Magic Knight and eventually become Wizard King. I want to shape a brighter future. But if I have to use this..."
There is a pain in your chest. Julius is far too giving for his own good. He already knows the risk of the job and even expects to die if his contingency is anything to go off of. Despite your worry, you squeeze Julius' hand and smile at him.
"Don't worry. I'll be with you no matter what. We're in this together."
The fear that you would run at the slightest hint of risk was washed away from Julius' mind. He leaned in and thanked you with a tender kiss, more in love with you than before.
"I keep forgetting that half my strength is with you," Julius remarked as you two pull away from the the kiss. "Thank you for always being with me."
"You're always welcome," you replied.
.....
William Vangeance
"My dear, I would like to court you." William's words would've made your heart leap. Yet there was an anxious look in his eyes and his lips were pulled in a thin line. "But I don't believe it would be right to do so until you know."
"Know what?" you asked hesitantly.
William smiled sadly at you. He touched his mask. Without any words, you understood. You had suspected for a while that the mask was more than a fashion statement.
The room was painfully silent. The sound of William's footsteps. The door's lock clicking into place.
When William was in front of you again, your eyes met. His fear was palpable. Then, he removed his mask and you saw him, the real him. There were no words for it, how painful and twisted his curse looked. Slowly, you touched the edge of the mark which made William flinch the slightest bit.
"I've had this my whole life and may have it the rest of my days. I've had suitors turn me down just hearing I was cursed," William said, tears coming to his eyes.
"Will... This is..." As you struggled to get your words out, you saw him bite his lip and the tears fall. "Not going to change anything." You cupped his face and make him look at you. "I fell in love with a kind man, not a pretty face. Besides, the mark kind of matches your eyes." You and William laugh a bit at your remark.
More tears fell from William's eyes but were accompanied by a bright grin. The shadows in his heart may not have left entirely, but you would help keep them at bay. The hope that you loved him now became assurance that you did.
You pressed a kiss to the corner of his eye. The skin looked blemished but it was soft against your own. Neither you nor William had nothing to fear. This secret would not break you two, but make your love stronger.
"Would you really marry if I asked?" William asked, his whole form still shaking. "Even with this?"

Meta OC Questions
Once upon a time, I posted a series of questions asking about thematic/symbolic elements in relation to ocs.
Well now I've decided to create a new set of oc questions, this time touching upon meta elements of them as well as how they interact with the world they're placed in.
I'm mostly aiming these questions at fandom ocs (which is more obvious in some later questions) but these could also apply to wholly original characters.
..........
What inspired you to create your oc?
Why does your oc look the way they do? What are your reasons for their appearance?
What is the origin of the character's name?
Why did you give them the name they have? What is the in-universe reason for their name?
What kind of abilities and power level does your oc have? Why did you give them their powers? What's the in-universe reason?
What are the weaknesses in their power? Why did you give them their weaknesses? What's the in-universe reason?
Does your oc have any notable skills or good personality traits? Why did you give them those traits? Why do they exist in-universe?
Does your oc have any notable flaws or activities they're not good at? Why did you give them those flaws? Why do they exist in-universe?
In a group dynamic, what kind of role does the oc usually fill? Are they a worry wart? A troublemaker? The straight man?
What is your favorite trait regarding your oc?
What is your least favorite trait regarding your oc?
Which canon characters (if any) do the oc have good relationships with? Why those characters?
Which canon characters (if any) do the oc have bad relationships with? Why those characters?
Did you give your oc a love interest? Is it another oc or a canon character? Why?
How does your oc interact with the canon narrative? What about it do they change?
What aspect(s) of the universe's lore are they connected to? Do they change/add lore to the universe?
List/describe up to five tropes that apply to your oc. They could be related to the oc's characterization or their narrative arc.
Imagine meeting your oc. What would you want to say to them or do with them?
How might your oc react to finding out you are the one responsible for their life?
Share a random piece of trivia about the creation of your oc. Examples: scrapped ideas or changes you didn't expect to make.

We all know that Sam would die for Dean but would he be willing to shave his head to save him from jeopardy? Thank you for your request! This one was a challenge and took a lot of brainstorming and thinking outside the box, but it was so much fun to write! Hope you enjoy it! ❤❤

Sam’s eyes fluttered as the haze of sleep began to fade. He sat up and groaned, his hand immediately coming to his head. He squinted his eyes as he gingerly got up from the bed, the sunlight streaming through the motel window nearly blinding. The room spun once he stood, and he stopped for a moment, using the wall to balance himself.
He glanced to the bed opposite his. It was still disheveled from the previous morning when Dean had gotten up and seemed to not have been moved around. Dean’s duffle was still at the foot of the bed, and the empty containers of take out and half-finished beer bottles still littered the table.
“Dean?” Sam called, his voice hoarse. He winced, his own voice like a clanging gong in his ears, the sound adding to his already pounding head. Silence met his plea so he went to the bathroom. He swung open the door and peeked inside. The room was empty.
Sam shook his head and went to the sink, turning on the faucet. He splashed his face with water and took a of couple sips before running his damp fingers through his hair. He patted his face dry before going back out to the main room, still finding it empty.
He walked to the window and peeked through the blinds, straining to see past the bright light. The Impala was gone. Maybe Dean had gone to get breakfast.
He checked his phone and frowned. There were no messages from Dean. A little strange considering Dean was almost anal about keeping tabs on everything and everyone. He mentally shrugged it off, his mind still numb and unable to form anything coherent.
Maybe a cold shower would help. He began stripping off his clothes. He frowned again when he realized he was still dressed in his FBI suit. What the fuck happened?
He showered, the coldness of the water waking him up. By the time he toweled off and went back to the main room, his mind was slowly clearing. He checked his phone again as he sat at the edge of his bed. Again, no new messages. A prick of uneasiness settled in his mind. He brought up Dean’s caller ID, pressing the call button. After a couple of rings Dean’s all too familiar voicemail came through: “This is Dean’s other, other cell….” Sam hung up before the recording could finish.
He closed his eyes and put a hand to his forehead, desperately trying to recall what happened. A flash of obsidian hair and the greenest pair of eyes he’d ever seen flashed through his mind. Like a bolt of lightning everything came rushing back.
They were investigating a string of murders that nearly screamed witch. But with each lead, it became increasingly difficult to come to anything conclusive, and the brothers began to question if they were really on the trail of a witch.
After going to the morgue to check out another murder, and turning up empty handed once more, they had gone to the a bar. They needed to clear their heads and reevaluate.
They had just sat down at the bar and began discussing what their next move should be when the most beautiful woman Sam had ever laid eyes on approached them. She had immediately taken a liking to Dean, rubbing her hands over his shoulders and running them up and down his arm.
Sam rolled his eyes. Of course Dean was the one to always snag the pretty ones. He was surprised when the woman had offered to buy them both a drink. They had sat at the bar for a while, Dean and the woman lost in their own little world, and Sam mostly listening to the man beside him spill his life story.
Sam had gone to the bathroom to relieve himself and upon returning Dean had shot him the signal. The one that said he was taking home the girl. Sam had just chuckled and rolled his eyes.
The woman had taken it upon herself to order him another drink which he downed in nearly two gulps. If he wasn’t getting any action, he might as well drown himself in alcohol.
Everything after that was hazy. He remembered bits and pieces: someone telling him he had had enough to drink; another person offering to take him home. The next thing he knew he was waking up in his bed.
He couldn’t have gotten drunk could he? He only had two drinks, and he was known to be able to hold his liquor well. Unless…. No. Surely not.
He frowned, trying to remember the woman’s name. He shook his head in frustration. Maybe Cas could help him remem…. Cas…. Cassie! It was like a lightbulb went off in his mind.
His stomach lurched. He didn’t even want to go there. But it all made sense. Cassie had to be the witch. It would explain everything - why a good chunk of his memory was gone, why he was suddenly in his bed, and why Dean was missing.
He took his phone and dialed Rowena. “Hello, Samuel,” Rowena’s distinct voice came through the phone.
“Rowena,” Sam said, unceremoniously. “Hey, listen, Dean and I are hunting a witch….”
     “Of course,” Rowena snarked.
“And,” Sam said, ignoring her sarcasm, “Dean’s missing. I think it was the witch, and I need some information on her.”
Rowena laughed. “Doesn’t surprise me one bit. Your brother always was a dunce,” she trilled.
Sam grit his teeth. “Rowena, I don’t have time for your games. So are you going to help me or not?”
“I’m sorry, Samuel,” Rowena said, not sounding one bit remorseful. “It’s just always such a pleasure for me when one of the Winchesters are in trouble. But I suppose...I could help you.” She sighed. “What’s her name?”
“Cassie,” Sam said. Silence met his words and he frowned. “Rowena?” he asked, thinking she might have hung up.
“I’m still here,” Rowena said, irritatedly. “But I’m afraid the name Cassie doesn’t ring a bell…. Do you remember anything...unusual about her?”
Sam closed his eyes, digging deep in his memory, trying to bring everything he could remember back up. “She had long black hair and really green eyes. She was the most beautiful woman I’d ever laid eyes on,” he said slowly. “And...and she smelled really good. Like...floral or citrus maybe….”
     “Water lilies,” Rowena stated.
     “What?” Sam asked.
“Water lilies. The scent you’re describing - it’s water lilies,” she said. “I think I know who you’re dealing with.”
“Who?” Sam asked, nearly jumping from his skin in excitement.
“Ah, ah, ah,” Rowena reprimanded. “You know I never divulge anything without a price.”
“Fine,” Sam growled. “What do you want?”
     “Protection,” Rowena said simply.
Sam narrowed his eyes. “Protection from what?”
“Let’s just say...there may or may not be a very powerful witch after me because I may or may not have stolen her grimoire…” Rowena said slowly.
“No,” Sam said firmly. “Absolutely not. We don’t need another witch to have to deal with.”
Rowena tsked. “Well, then Samuel, I suppose there’s nothing left for us to discuss. Good day.”
“Wait!” Sam practically shouted. He hadn’t heard a click on the other end so he assumed Rowena was still on the other end. “Okay. We’ll do it. Just...please. I need to find Dean.”
Rowena sighed triumphantly. “Thank you, Samuel,” she said, her voice dripping with self-satisfaction. Sam rolled his eyes but kept quiet. He didn’t want to screw this up.
“What I was saying earlier is, I don’t think you’re dealing with a witch,” Rowena said.
     “Then what?” Sam asked impatiently.
“I’m trying to tell you, dear boy. But if you keep interrupting me with your incessant and silly questions you’ll get no answers,” she said, her sweet tone barely masking her obvious irritation. “Now…. It’s not really what you’re dealing with as much as it is who. From the description you gave me, I believe who you encountered in the bar was the demi-goddess, Cassandra, daughter of Xanth, a river god.”
Sam frowned. “I’ve never heard of them before.”
“Most people haven’t. There’s very little written about them. Xanth is a god that prefers to keep to himself. Anyway, Cassandra was a helper of men. Xanth assigned her to protect and lead soldiers and men of valor into battle and the afterlife.”
“So kind of like a valkyrie,” Sam said.
“In a way...yes,” Rowena said. “However, unlike valkyries who weren’t allowed to interfere in the battles, Cassandra wasn’t restricted to what she could and could not do. That turned out to be both a blessing and a curse for the poor girl.
“There was a particular man of valor - the mightiest of them all - a defender of men. His name was Xander. Xander was unlike any of the other warriors Cassandra had ever encountered, and she soon fell in love with him. When Xanth found out he was furious. She was his only daughter, and he was a jealous god. He cursed Cassandra to a life of immortality and disowned her. She and Xander consummated their love and had a relatively happy life and had many children. However, all her children died at a young age, and she outlived Xander.
“It’s said that the only way she could get back into her father’s good graces and return to his kingdom was to kill Xander or one of his bloodline by Xander’s own sword and bring their severed head and a vile of blood as a peace offering. It seems Cassandra has finally had enough of living a life of solitude and is ready to do whatever it takes to redeem herself. And since Xander is dead, it appears she’s taken Dean in his stead.”
“But...that means…” Sam said, his mind reeling with unspoken possibilities.
“Aye, boy,” Rowena said. “You Winchesters are descendants of Xander.”
“But I thought you said all of Cassandra’s children died before adulthood,” Sam said in confusion.
“They did,” Rowena said. “But I never said the peace offering had to be a direct descendant. As long as they’re from the same bloodline.”
“Fuck,” Sam breathed, closing his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose. “So what happens next?”
Rowena sighed. “Well...if you can find her, you might be able to convince her to stop. However, it’s been many, many years since she’s felt any empathy for those she once protected. It’s hard to say how dead set she is on going through with this. I don’t know how much bitterness has already consumed her.”
     “Okay, thanks, Rowena,” Sam said.
“Our deal...” Rowena said, her statement a masked question.
“You have my word,” Sam promised.
“Look for a river. You’ll find her there. It’s where she’s most comfortable. Good luck to ya, Samuel,” Rowena said before hanging up.
Sam opened his GPS, looking up the rivers nearest to the motel. The only one listed was a river less than two miles from the bar they were at the night before.
He threw on some clothes and suited up with what weapons he had. Most of their arsenal was in the Impala, but he’d have to make do with what him and Dean kept with them at the motel.
He set out at a brisk walk. He didn’t have a car handy, but he didn’t want to have to stop and acquire one and waste anymore time getting to Dean. His stomach was in knots, and his heart rate was already high. Hunting something new was always nerve-racking. He hated walking into something blind, especially when he didn’t know what he was up against.
It took him a little less than an hour to reach the river, alternating between walking and jogging, his long legs carrying him along swiftly. He could hear the rushing water and the coolness in the air as he neared the river.
He rounded a hedge of heavy foliage and stopped, his heart in his throat. Dean sat slumped against a tree, rope tied tightly around his chest and shoulders, his head hanging at an odd angle.
Sam surveyed the area, finding it empty. He was about to make his way to Dean when Cassandra stepped out from the behind the tree, a silver-tipped sword in her hands. She came to stand over Dean, her back straight and demeanor confident. She raised the sword, leveling it with Dean’s neck. She leaned back and took aim.
“Cassandra!” Sam’s voice boomed in the quiet morning air. She jumped, lowering the sword to her side. She whirled around, her eyes wide with alarm.
Sam raised his hands in surrender as he slowly approached the woman. “Cassandra,” he said again, this time less authoritatively. “You don’t have to do this.”
“But I do,” she said, her voice staunch and sure. “I’ve been alone for so long. I’ve outlived everyone I have ever loved. I have nothing left, and this earth has nothing else to give me. I just want to go home, and this is the only way.”
“I know it seems that way,” Sam said soothingly, coming to stand in front of her. “But there’s always another way.”
“But I have no other choice!” Cassandra screamed, a tear slipping down her cheek.
“Okay, okay,” Sam said with a forced smile. “Listen, I know what it’s like to be stuck in something that feels like you have no choice. But trust me when I say, there is always a choice.”
Cassandra looked to the ground, her face marred with a mixture of guilt and uncertainty. Sam could tell her conviction was wavering, so he pressed forward. “I heard about who you once were. I listened to the stories of you helping warriors in battle and leading mighty men of valor to their afterlives,” Sam said. “And I know about the love you held for Xander and the heartbreak you felt at losing your children. I know the bitterness and hatred you have for this life and for your father. But Cassandra, I also know there has to be a part of that helper of men still inside you.”
Cassandra looked up at him, her green eyes swimming with unshed tears. Without a word, she dropped the sword to the ground, the metal clanging against the frigid earth. She covered her face with her hands, and her shoulders shook as thousands of years of heartache and anger came spilling out.
Sam instinctively reached for her, drawing her into his arms. “I...I can’t believe I killed all those people,” Cassandra said, pulling away, tears still streaming down her face. “I...I had to lure you and your brother here. It’s like all I cared about was going home. I...I don’t know what came over me.”
“You were desperate. Desperation can make you do things you’d never even consider doing,” Sam said, thinking back to all the times he’d allowed despair to take over.
“I...I don’t know what to do now,” Cassandra said, wiping away her tears. “My father was very implicit in what he expected of me if I wanted to return to our kingdom.”
Sam frowned. “Surely there’s something else you can offer. Something your father would accept just as much,” he said.
Cassandra looked off into the distance, thoughtfully considering Sam’s words. She glanced back at him, her eyes lighter as if a sudden revelation had been given to her. “Well, there might be something....” she said slowly, biting the inside of her cheek. “But...it would require your identity.”
Sam nodded briskly. “Yeah, of course,” he said, shrugging off his coat and rolling up the sleeve of his flannel. “Take as much of my blood as you need,” he said, offering his arm to her.
She shook her head and smiled slightly. “I’m not speaking of your genetic makeup, Sam,” she said. “I’m talking about your identity - the thing that defines who you are. Something that makes you...you.”
Sam looked at her in confusion. He didn’t understand what she was getting at. A soft breeze swept around them, a few strands of his hair moving across his eyes. He went to swipe them away, and that’s when it hit him. His hair.
His hair was the one thing he could control in the roller coaster and upside-down life he led. He couldn’t remember the last time he had short hair. It was what defined him.
He closed his eyes. How could he give up the one thing that was really, truly his? Something he’d fostered over many years and something that was almost as vital to him as the air he breathed?
His heart ached as he opened his eyes to look at Dean. He was still unconscious. A gash ran along one side of his cheekbone and a bruise was starting to form along his jaw. He looked so small and weak when he was in such a helpless state. He’d given up more for Sam than Sam could ever count. Dean had given up his dreams, his life, just so Sam could have it a little easier.
Sam might lose a part of himself, but his hair would eventually grow back. Dean was irreplaceable. He turned back to Cassandra and nodded. “Okay,” he conceded. “My hair.”
Cassandra nodded in return. “Alright,” she said. “But I have to be the one to do it, and we have to do it with the sword,” she said, motioning to the weapon still on the ground. “Otherwise my father won’t accept it.”
Sam swallowed hard. “Okay,” he said simply. He lowered himself to the ground and waited. He felt Cassandra come up behind him, and she ran her fingers through his silky hair.
“I’m so sorry, Sam,” she said. “I can’t take just a little.... It has to be everything.”
“It’s okay,” Sam croaked, his throat tight. “Do what you have to.”
He felt the cold edge of silver against his hairline. With one swift movement Cassandra pulled the sword back, taking the first clump of hair with it.
Sam closed his eyes, fighting against the tears that threatened to spill over. His lip trembled and against his best efforts, a tear slid down his cheek. He sat tall in resolve, but his shoulders slumped a little more as each piece of his identity fell to the ground.

Declan & Madeline Keyes Four children (Róisín, Nora, Saffron, Maddox)
The heads of a large extended immigrant family from the United Kingdom, Declan and Madeline sought out the valley and specifically the Church of Dark. The couple were solid practitioners and seemed to eagerly embrace the tenets of the Church. However, it soon became evident they were anything but conventional.
Whispers spread of the eccentric British family residing together on a small sprawl of land. The father used the craft to steal in the markets, the mother harnessed her skills of fascination to lead members of the Church astray. Aunts, uncles, and cousins were routinely admonished by leadership for casting an unseemly shadow on the group as a whole. One member of the family left the Church of Dark the only way allowed: via death. The Keyes also owned a carnival outside town in which strange and disturbing stories were often linked to.
Odds and ends:
Currently the Church has established the carnival can only operate during designated days, usually holidays. Most members work there during its operation as performers, running games and rides, or to ensure the occasional strange disturbance doesn’t run off all the visitors.
The Keyes property is small but cluttered with small cottages, barns, and the main house where Maddox’s parents reside.
Aside from a rarely breathing carnival, the Keyes are scavengers. Vultures, even. Picking from the bones of dead cars in the valley to resale. Hauling flatbeds of scrap metal down winding roads back to their property. A junkyard is on the edge of the Keyes property, specializing in building supplies, scrap metal, and car parts they sell to the public. The warlock refers to the tiny acreage as the Kingdom of Junk. His father, Declan, crowned king long ago.
Some of the Keyes rely on ‘odd jobs’, aka stealing, grifting, and occasionally smuggling goods in/out of the valley. Others never leave darkened farm house rooms. Usually there is a weekend bonfire party on the property not open to outsiders.
The family is large and clan like, extending to aunts, uncles, great aunts and uncles, their spouses or partners, cousins, cousins by marriage, some rando named Kevin who has been sleeping in a tent on the property for 12 years, Madeline’s father, Declan’s parents, and others permanently ensconced in the fabric of the family. In total, there are... well, no one knows exactly how many members of the Keyes family there are...
It’s a family affair:
Declan’s presence is often intimidating, standing at 6′ 4″ inches with piercing blue eyes and hair as dark as a raven’s wing, however he’s charismatic and protective; he likes old blues, Vegas-era Elvis, and is never without his trademark suit.
Despite her diminutive size Madeline is mostly feared in the valley, taking pleasure in destroying the lives of those she sees as too cheerful, too happy, just because she can.
Róisín is the eldest child, every bit as vindictive and conniving as her mother; she also enjoys seducing the significant others of prominent members of the Church and leading them to ruin.
Nora is stubborn-headed and sarcastic; the most similar to Maddox in temperament and so the two naturally despise each other; Nora and Maddox fought in the war together but often aimed their magic on each other instead of their designated enemies. Nora insists she lost some fine motor control and sensation in her right hand due to one of these attacks, and Maddox tells her to grow up. Although they are often at odds, Declan consults with Nora and Maddox equally in terms of family matters.
Saffron can often be found hovering above the local river singing eerily to herself (or is someone there only she can see?) while plucking petals off daisies; her hobby is appearing out of nowhere and uttering an eardrum-splitting scream into the ears of unsuspecting children; she is the sister Maddox is closest to.
Maddox can be charming like his father but prefers to be blunt like his mother. He can be generous towards those he likes and petty to those he does not. He plays piano, guitar, and drums.
Maddox’s father taught him the art of the con at the age of 8. A simple pick pocket at first, eventually he became involved in larger scams and schemes his father always seemed to be developing. He was permanently expelled from the Academy at age 20 for seriously disabling another student using a stolen dark grimoire. Coming home from the war he hoped to be appointed as the coven’s bard but has found himself assigned to the Watchmen instead. He also works at the local music store.
