Regius Development Update #1
As you may know, I've been working on a pokemon fangame for a while. I want to try posting progress about it more often, because I'm nearing the later stages of the project where the bulk of the hard work is already finished, and I have plenty of neat things I can share. Now is the time when I really need motivation to finish up the home stretch, so I hope you'll all enjoy what I've done so far!
I've already posted some of my progress on the game's maps here and here, and if you want to see every post I've made about the project, you can check out the regius tag. But I've never given a proper overview of what the game is all about, so that's what I'll do in this post.
Title
The game is called REGIUS. I'm still deciding how to format the title, and if it should have a descriptive tagline like "Regius: A Pokemon Adventure" or something like that. But one thing I have come up with is a banger logo and title screen to go with it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had more ambitious plans for the title screen graphics and created this version as a placeholder, but I'm pretty satisfied with it so I think it will stick around for a while.
So what's it about?
From the title screen, you can see that Regigigas will play some kind of important role, and in fact this is a game that primarily features the whole Regi family (except for the two newest gen 8 members, RIP regieleki and regidrago).
Furthermore, this is a game that takes place almost entirely on the ocean! You'll be exploring the Regius Archipelago, a series of islands connected by open sea. Here are some examples of the types of locales you might expect to see:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hidden deep in each island, you'll find ruins from an ancient civilization, and a member of the Regi family sealed away. To unlock the secrets of the islands, you'll have to journey to each one and capture Regirock, Regice, and Registeel, and then the path will open to your final goal, Regigigas.
Unlike most other games, the map of this region is very well-connected, with every island joined by a large central stretch of ocean. Your exploration will be self-guided, and you'll be rewarded for checking out every corner of the archipelago, so decide for yourself how you would like to progress through the game!
New Pokemon
Of course, one of the most important features of this game is the set of brand new pokemon! The Regius Archipelago is home to a number of unique species not found anywhere else. In total there are roughly 50 new pokemon I've developed that can be obtained in this game, so look forward to befriending some new creatures when the game finally becomes available to play!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Development Details
This game is being developed using the pokeemerald decompilation project, meaning all my work is based on modifying the source code of Pokemon Emerald. It's a rom hack that will be playable on any GBA emulator (or hardware, if you can get it to run!). It's a lot of work to make a whole new region like this, but it's my preferred way of making a pokemon fangame! I like using the same game engine and graphics as official titles, it makes my game feel authentic.
Development Goals
Now that you have an idea of what the game is going to be like, let me talk about the project's current status. My goal is to get an alpha version of the game ready to release as soon as possible. This will have a full region ready to explore, every obtainable new pokemon, and the Regis all waiting to be discovered. At the moment, I am still working on filling out every map area with objects and scripts, the stuff that the player actually interacts with.
This alpha version, of course, will not be the final version of the game. It will provide you with a fun world to explore and lots of pokemon to train, but I have much more planned! Eventually, the game will have a bigger story, where the player will race against a nefarious band of pirates intending to capture the Regis and upset the balance of the islands. I would also like to remake the whole project in pokeemerald expansion, a large community mod of pokeemerald that includes lots of updated features, like a modern battle system and all official pokemon through gen 8. But that's a long way off, and I'm trying to stay focused on my current goals for now. Just remember there's a bright future to look forward to!
I think that's about all I need to share for now. Let me know what you think, and look forward to more development updates in the future! I'll keep on working hard to make this years-long project a reality.

Nintendo Direct 9/14/2023
Tumblr media
This Direct is pretty much what I expected from the Switch at this stage in its life. One potentially interesting new game, plus a bunch of remakes and third-party/indie titles, as well as wrapping up the DLC content for all their games.
Another Code: Recollection was honestly the highlight of the direct for me, and I don't even plan on getting it. Maybe I should. In a sea of remakes of games that your average Nintendo fan my age already owns, seeing an obscure duology from the DS and Wii get another chance at life is great, especially with one of the games being Japan-exclusive previously. A genuinely nice little surprise.
Princess Peach: Showtime! looks like it's going to be Nintendo's last actual new game on the Switch. I'm not even sure what genre this game is supposed to be, but the outfits look snazzy as hell and I'm keen to learn more. Big win for the lesbians.
Splatoon 3 - Side Order is interesting, and I hope it impresses to a similar degree as Octo Expansion. Not much else to say right now.
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door rightfully had people screaming. This, combined with Super Mario RPG's remake, gives me the slightest bit of hope that Nintendo might one day produce a new Mario RPG that everyone can agree is good. Hopefully this game has some new features over the original.
WarioWare: Move It! looks like a great game for parties and families. I'm very glad Nintendo still makes WarioWare, even though they don't sell very well.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong looks nice, but I've never had much interest in this series, and neither has the Nintendo fandom at large from what I've seen. At least this one's not centered around the Mini Marios. I'd be down to try it for the right price, which is most likely not going to happen with Nintendo. Very happy for any fans of the GBA original. Sad for all the Donkey Kong Country fans who got their hopes up.
Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is... yet another remaster. Except unlike the other ones from today, this one just looks like an upscaled 3DS game. I'm always up for new ways to play old games, especially ones that released on unique hardware like the 3DS, but with Nintendo's pricing this one's going to be very hard to justify.
Detective Pikachu Returns is at least a new game. I don't think I've met anyone who played the original. If you're into this sort of game, fantastic. While I'm glad there's finally a game where you can creep on people with Luxray, I'll have to pass.
F-Zero 99 just makes me sad. Another battle royale gimmick game that's going to disappear, just like Super Mario Bros. 99. Except this time it's with a series that's been dead for 20 years. Even without Pyoro's leak baiting us, this is a massive letdown, regardless of the quality of the actual game.
For the rest, everyone I know loves Dave the Diver, I just haven't gotten around to it. I'm surprised Riot announced Bandle Story here, but it looks nice. Contra: Operation Galuga looks kind of ugly tbh, and I don't know what to think about Tomb Raider I-III Remastered's graphics as someone who never played the originals. Unicorn Overlord is something I might look into, and I really need to play Wargroove so I can know whether or not to be excited for the sequel.
Something something trombone, something something amogus. The Funky Kong is real. 7/10 Direct. Some nice surprises, but remake fatigue is very real. For the final stretch of the Switch's lifespan, it's about as good as I could have realistically expected, if not slightly better.

i feel you on being sad about ff7r, i actually loved it at first because i personally really liked a lot of things about how they expanded the midgar section of the game and i wasn't thinking too hard about how some of the plot changes might remove a bit of nuance, or the sephiroth stuff, because i was just having so much fun while i was playing. but then the ending happened and the stuff with zack on top of it and i progressively got more annoyed because i just wanted it to essentially still be the original story??
i won't go on too much about it because i don't wanna leave an essay in your inbox but i just feel like, the original game is from 1997. it certainly has its own flaws and things that might make people not wanna play it, and it deserved to be recreated in beautiful 3d graphics and brought to the attention of a newer generation of gaming fans who may not have given ff7 a second look before. i wanted people who would get into this amazing story for the first time because of the remake to get the original story, more or less, and could've overlooked some flaws with how they expanded/changed it if it was still basically the same plot! i'm still gonna play every part of the remake but the whole stealth sequel thing they're doing is such a bummer to me lol, i've already talked to a lot of my friends and family about it and strongly recommended that they play the original game even if it might be a bit dated.
🥺🥺🤝🤝
i'm glad to hear about your experience with it and relieved it was a bit of the same.
oops a bit more under the cut (no spoilers this time though! just salt.)
Honestly i'm a bit on the same ground there because i did really enjoy playing the remake, it's fun, it's dynamic, there's new quests i think are really fun and great, and i was so hyped with seeing everyone else that i was willing to give even Sephiroth a shot. tbh originally i thought it might be just straight up hallucinations that aren't motivated by Sephiroth himself, just playing on Cloud's trauma, and while we lost the subtility, i am a sucker for exploring more of Cloud's trauma and complete collapsing "This Is Fine" mental health.
I was always a bit iffy about the Specters but i did go through the game mostly happy with what i got. But yeah ultimately it's really both the conclusion of the Specters storyline and the Zack scene that left me "huh." for a while.
And honestly my reactions when the game was over was just "okay i'm not. sure what to do with it but i'll guess we'll have to wait and see."
but it's sitting on it for a few years now that really make me go, actually, i really dislike it 😭
Originally i think i wanted to go easy on the game because i was buying onto the "well maybe it's too much to expect them to do a plot that is exactly the same as the OG, they keep talking about how they don't want to redo the game 101 and i guess that's fair", but now in retrospect i'm just "... but it was advertised to be a remake. And Yuffie's DLC can show very well how they can do new things adding to the game without making it a straight up sequel. and why is ff7 having a metacommentary plotline anyway" and that's when i started to get beef about it. Like, it's shitty to punish the fans for them being mad they got sold something under false adverticizing.
The Grief theme from the OG is something i care a lot about so this was one of the first thing i started to think in depth about, and since it also meant trying to make sense of "why do i want /this/ death to happen again" it eventually made me think of the others themes i cared about the remake would not be able to follow through properly and *there* you get how i am today, fully jaded about it.
Truly the "Sephiroth locked himself in the Nibelheim Mansion" character arc. Going in with curiosity and coming out with, actually, the more i read the more i think it's too bad.
As for the second paragraph: 100%!!! Like, i've been here for 15 years and i know for a fact that recommending the OG is always met with "oh but it looks so bad" (it's stylized not bad!!! oh well), or "i can't focus without voice acting" or "but the gameplay sounds boring", which is added to how all the others entries in the series have polished graphisms to start with (even if some are early polished 3D and have clunky animation as a result, it still holds up that the more "modern" player can get into it yaknow)
and idk when you compare it to like RE2 Remake that balances remaking the old game with new graphisms and everything and then changing a couple of things either to upgrade the story or to make it more coherent with later update in the franchise.... It's kinda like the type of things we expected i guess???
And i've seen people decide to get into ff7 for the first time by the remake itself. Some people are waiting to see where the plot is going to go via the remake. And while the remake can work as a sequel if you squint, idk how i think about it being the first contact someone has with the saga. (tho i don't know how much i can criticize on that level since i started with Crisis Core, then watched Advent Children, and then i read the wiki for the OG and only played the OG years later. So i have no lesson to give on the "but you're not experiencing the ff7 saga in the right order :(" front)
I have a friend who's a game dev who also only got into ff7 via the remake, and we discussed it last time we met because he knows i'm a huge fan and he wanted my opinion as a Veteran™. Turns out, while he liked a few things from the game, there was a lot out of it that he didn't like and couldn't figure out why (except a few things he called "idk what's going on but it sounds like Nomura's fuckery", you can feel the KH veteran out of him). And the more we discussed it the more he realized that a lot of the things he really didn't vibe with were truly Remake Only Decisions. Like he didn't understand on what level Sephiroth is meant to be a legendary Antagonist while all he does is just being a generic villain who shows up early just to go "heheh i'll do evil", or complained about super long and eventless dungeons that were really just, remake only stuff. and he hated the Specters bc he kept seeing it as breaking from the immersion of the story itself and their appearance seemed to be completely separated from the main story, as if it was another story running in parallelism to the one we're going through.
On the other hand when i started to tell him how it was in the OG for instance and especially the difference in Sephiroth's writing he was nodding along like "*that* i get why it was impactful". (and he's not the type to lie about his feelings on something just to go with the opinion someone is holding, convos got heated before lmao)
So yeah like. idk. I just kinda wish they were forward about it not being a remake. and not derailling the plot of the game itself in order to make a metatextual critism on how fans demands those type of remakes and refuses to accept deviations from it.
So i'm all with you on that too 😭 i'm just so sad bc i remember in 2015 when they announced the remake being so hyped and finally feeling like the OG would be more accessible to people whom i knew at the time didn't want to bother with such an old gem game. But now i feel like it's kinda made even more inaccessible since i feel like some people would stop at the remake itself bc it's already a game that is way way bigger than the OG ever was, and it's already time consuming to start with just to have the same story told in another medium.
When Ever Crisis was announced it was supposed to be a mobile game which would actually go through the whole plot of the saga, without changing anything, but with characters's chibi, and i remember the devs using EC as a shield there like "well if you want to play the OG in good quality tune in for EC". And i didn't keep up with EC's newest news but at the time it was announced it was going to release one chapter at a time for the duration of the server, which. is such a downgrade in every front and also means you won't be able to keep the game on the long term doesn't it? and after the fiasco that was First Soldier this is even more of a dubious take.
All in all it's just, genuinely such a cynical remake and commercial approach it just makes me so sad.
so yeah i'm 100% with you on this one :(
and same i'll play the games, esp since there are still good things into them, the gameplay is enjoyable, the explorations are so fun, it's nice to see the world of the OG being given this approach! For all the stuff i would complain about there's a lot i actively like about the remake, for instance i'm so so glad we get more Aerith & Tifa scenes where they show how close friends they become (bc god the eternal shipwar pinning the girls against one another in a petty catfight was the most annoying part of the pre-remake fandom, despite the OG only ever treating them as good friends, not rivals, so the fact the remake hammers in even more "tHEY'RE!!! FRIENDS!!! STOP IT!!!" is everything to me.).
And there's stuff i think are genuinely good like, actually exploring Sector 7 and making us care about the people in it much more than the OG could prepare us for it! muah very good no note.
It just genuinely sucks that the biggest problem with ff7r is the actual core of the plotline they're going with to drive the whole story onward. Everything else goes from fine to amazing. And then this thing doesn't work for me. but since it's the most important thing of the game, it undoes everything that made me hyped to start with.
so yeah :( fully 100% with you on this one. Guess we have to push our "play the 1997 game" agenda even harder now. rip :sob:
Thank you once again for sharing <333

November Favorites 2020!
 Hello!
So as you may have seen I have been uploading a bunch of art all of November, not every week because of my crippling job at the moment taking away my sanity.lol. But i did try my best to update whenever I can. I do have so much more to complete so please look out this December for more digital art being pumped out
How are you all doing?  I'm holding up decently, I'm trying to avoid talking about covid since that's all i've been hearing from work and home and it's really making me anxious since i'm not able to work from home due to the nature of my job. I hope you all are holding up hope and taking care of your selves, let's all remember that there is a time after this and we will get through this.
with that being said I will have a lot more time to spend on my art after January since my work term is going to end and I don't plan to stay for an extension, so maybe then I'll catch up on all of my previous art that I was supposed to upload, a.k.a my hero academia ones.lol
also I'm still chugging along reading more manhwa (web toons ) from korean and chinese artists, i'm so disappointed in myself for not discovering these sooner, these stories are really good and so much effort was put into the art panels, as I have said all I've read was manga so i'm used to just seeing black and white panels, so i never really dove into web toons though I have appreciated the work put into it, now that I'm down the rabbit hole I am discovering really good story lines that are different from the manga I've read thus far and I'm really enjoying it!
so i'm excited to share my thoughts on everything I've been liking
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                           Manhwa/Manga/Webtoon
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so previously in last months recommendations I have talked about a few of the manhwa I've been reading so I'll briefly list those below since they are all still ongoing
1) who's baby is it
2) to be or no to be
3) social temperature
4) salad days
all of them are still ongoing and i'm still in the process of reading them so I can't give a full review till it's completed but so far I am still enjoying them, that's definitely a good sign since i tend to just drop something after I don''t find it interesting anymore at some point in the story. If you have not read my October favorites journal please do so for my initial thoughts on these manhwas. Now i'm actually going to talk about some of the ones that are completed   , so you can definitely read all of them without waiting for the an update from translators, lol
this is in no particular order, just fyi
1) Path to you
Tumblr media
"When almost college dropout Jensen attempts to drink away his problems, unemployed Nathaniel( Neil ) suddenly pukes on him and ruins his night. As an apology, Nathaniel offers to help Jensen with his studies. Despite Jensen's difficulties in getting along with people, the two become friends and something deeper begins to grow between them...”
this is the summary from one of the manga websites I was able to find, it does not even describes the emotional plot line that goes along with this later, this is ones of my absolute favorites! I love this manhwa so much, its a great depiction of a coming of age story for collage students going through their life journey and slowly getting though life's difficulties  and challenges, one character is going though emotional trauma and trying to over come it for years and another character is going through anti social disorder and discovering his sexuality, it's a plot line that portrayed human aspects in life quite well. I love the relationship between the two main character and how their relationship developed over time from being friends to being a couple. there is a lot of relationship building and minimal drama, which is really refreshing from mangas that I've read, so if you are just starting to delve into BL webtoons, please read this first! you will not be disappointed
with that being said, I love Neil, so much.... you don't even know. lol. He's so precious, literally like an actual cinnamon roll. LOL. i'm exposing myself ...so i'll leave it at that, i’m also wondering why his name is neil instead of nathan or nate...? lol.
2) Here U Are
Tumblr media
"Orientation of  the newcomers is a task for YuYang, and he ends up helping the unsociable and towering LiHuan, the kind of person that does everything to be disliked. But after better knowing each other, he discovers that the giant isn’t that bad of a person at all...”
I really wish I could find better summaries, lol. but it's to the point without giving away too much so i'll take it. This is one of the most popular series and I can totally see why after reading it, this story has every possible human aspect and relationship building  between the two main leads, I actually teared in some parts of this manhwa and I've never done that before! such a good story and plot line, if I were to pick any series in a web toon to be animated then I would choose this series hands down. There's also sub plots between different characters as well and how they deal with their interpersonal relationships and relationships between the two main leads, I love it! This is everything I want in a story, so please check this one out
also yuyang looks a lot like miyuki Kazuya from Daiya no ace and that just made me drawn to him.I really liked his personality and in the manhwa he has girls and guys in love with him and dude...I get it.
3) BJ Alex
Tumblr media
"Every night at 10, Dong-gyun locks himself up in his room, grabs a box of tissues, and watches a live cam boy show hosted by Alex, a BJ (broadcast jockey). Timid Dong-gyun admires not only Alex’s ripped body, but his candor in sharing his sexual experiences with viewers. One night, Dong-gyun downs too many drinks at a school networking event and passes out. When he wakes up, he’s in bed staring up at a shirtless hunk. A hunk who looks an awful lot like...Alex.”
so um...this is more yaoi than shounen ai cause of all the graphic scenes in the manhwa, if you are veteran you may have already read this one cause its really popular. It also has a lot of comedic elements to it too so it's not too serious, but the relationship developed between the two characters later on is really sweet despite the infinite amount of sex scenes. Not much else to say about this story, it's easy to follow and the only abuse in here is the emotional kind
I'm not really entirely sure how i felt about it in the beginning but the end is really good
4) No way, vampires don't exist
Tumblr media
"Four college housemates — Juwon, Eunho, Seongjae, and Gyumin — are in desperate need of a fifth person to fill a vacant room in their place. But their main concern isn’t about paying rent: they’re ravenous vampires, dying to sink their teeth into a fresh, live human! So they can’t believe their luck when Dongha, who grew up isolated from society, eagerly moves in with no idea of what awaits him. To the vampires’ dismay, however, Dongha doesn’t weigh enough for them to suck his blood! As they shower their unsuspecting new housemate with food and attention to fatten him up, have they gotten too attached to their would-be prey? And is there more to sweet, naive Dongha than meets the hungry vampires’ eyes?”
I have to preface by saying that ever since my twilight phase, I didn't consume anything that had to do with vampires for a very long time, for obvious reasons, but this one I just came across after reading path to you and thought I would at least check it out. It started off really comedic and I was like...what am i reading?  but it gets really light hearted and wholesome later on in the story. What I like about this is the character juwon, If you look at him he's that type of character that would look like the stoic a-hole of the story and those characters never appeal to me. But turns out he's the sweetest person most decent person of this story, it makes you want to route for him  and another thing I like about this story is that it looks like a harem but you can tell that there’s only one person the main character doungha treats differently from the rest and how the two are compatible with one another.  in these kind of stories, it’s always treated as every character is a possible route that leads to their own story but in here....there's only one...let's be real. This is one that is an odd ball cause it's technically completed but the translations are not...so i had to read the rest in korean, which makes it a good practice for me since i'm learning korean at the moment, it’s a good exercise...lol
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                             Anime/ Drama
  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not going to lie this department is lacking...lol. I have only been watching Heavens official blessing as mentioned in the last journal
but I have just found out that there is a remake of Shaman king in the making....and my little girl heart is screaming cause I loved shaman king when i was younger...so I can't wait for that
as for dramas, I've tried watching Start Up but I didn't like it so I dropped it, I might try watching crash landing on you since my best friend was obsessed with it, I watched a little of it but I left it since I was busy so i may get back to watching it from the beginning
-------------------------------------------------------------------
                             Music
--------------------------------------------------------------------
i'll put together a play list for you when you read these manga/manhwa...lol. cause that's what i've been doing
Playlist
Crush- No words
Sam kim - Breathe
Crush - let us go
Kim feel - falling
Paul kim - Dream
Kim feel - Hallelujah
Davichi - please don't cry
Yoo mirae - say
taeyeon - a poem called you
baek yerin- Here I am again
I wish tumblr has a way to play music on your page, without copy right..lol. I would share all of these songs cause they are so good
------------------------------------------------------------------------
so that's it for the month of November, lets' see what i get up to for December, I will be updating as frequently as possible so please look out for more art from me and follow me on my social media , I will see you all next time
bye!

I kinda see what you're saying critique-wise, but I do think you're being a tad harsh. I'm an old FF7 fan, and fan of turn based rpg's as well, but most of the changes I'm privy too seem to make sense. I have yet to see that ending (I won't until I play it) but the new battle system, the art style, everything I've seen in trailer and demo feels... Familiar but new, and I take that as a positive. I already have FF7, just a graphics upgrade doesn't matter too much to me. I like getting more stuff.
I feel like I have been cautiously accepting of most of Final Fantasy VII Remake over time. I don’t love the changes they’ve made, but I haven’t ever, like, written the game off or anything. Even when it came to the battle system, while I wasn’t a fan of some of the decisions after playing the demo, I watched other people play it to gain further insight on what I might be missing.
To say I am being “a tad harsh” is to judge me on the standards of knee-jerk reactionary internet fan boys, when my opinion is a little more nuanced than that.
I have always tried to give this game the benefit of the doubt at every single possible step of this process despite vocalizing my distaste for every decision they’ve made so far because I am a crazy Final Fantasy VII mark. I am even considering breaking my normal rule of “Wait until a sale” to buy FF7 Remake when it comes out, because I’d like to write a review for it.
(Unfortunately, I have two reviews on the docket already, so I’m still mulling the decision over in my head.)
Here’s the deal: changes don’t have to bother me. It’s pretty much expected that, if they are remaking the game, there will be changes. There were changes to Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 when they remade them. It’s kind of what you do.
It’s just, like I said in this ask…
There’s nothing wrong with broadening your appeal, you just can’t sell off the soul of your product for it.
But then, what is the soul of Final Fantasy? I don’t know if I can answer that. A couple months ago, I stopped and looked back on the entire franchise and realized I only really like four Final Fantasy games out of a total of 15.
I have personally played FF1-9, played a demo and watched a complete Let’s Play of FF10, played a demo of FF13, on top of watching a complete Let’s Play of FF13-2, and over half of Lightning Returns. I also played a multiple different demos of FF15, including the one that’s just the opening 2-3 hours of the game.
To get deeper in to the weeds, I finished Final Fantasy 1 on the GBA and it instantly became my favorite Final Fantasy. I played about halfway through FF2, also on the GBA, before getting bored with its bland characters and clumsy battle system. A friend gave me his copy of FF3 on DS, and I played it for about an hour before deciding I wasn’t in the mood at the time. I have yet to be in the mood.
I have finished FF4 on both SNES and DS. I have fond memories of the DS version despite the fact it is almost unfairly hard at points. I played the fan-translated version of FF5 on SNES up to the third map before deciding I didn’t care about any of the characters or the world – again, very by the books, though I suppose on some level it wrote some of those books.
I made it up to the final boss of Final Fantasy 6 on GBA just last year, fought it once and lost. Decided I was too unimpressed by the rest of the game to try it a second time. That was definitely a game whose zeitgeist outweighed the game’s actual quality. I did not hate it, but I definitely didn’t fall in love with it. I am an acquaintance at best.
I put 100+ hours in to Final Fantasy 7 from 1997-1999. I did nearly everything in that game, by myself, without a guide. I pushed most of my party to level 99, learned all their limit breaks, got all but one master materia, defeated all of the weapons, and even engineered a materia setup that let me cast Knights of the Round in an endless loop for zero MP. I destroyed that game front to back, inside and out.
I played Final Fantasy 8 up to around the start of the second disc (when you get the first “airship”), and could not tolerate the disjointed story or the awful characters any more than that. I’ve never looked back. I played Final Fantasy 9 up to the third disc via Blockbuster rentals, but at some point some gremlin decided to destroy the third disc, rendering the game unplayable on my machine. I enjoyed what I experienced, but I never saw how it ended.
I do not think of FFX fondly. Or anything related to FF13. Or FF15. That final FF15 demo feels like it has dialog written by a space alien failing to approximate earth language, and I got bored of it long before the demo itself ended. A friend has been nagging me for years to play FF12, and I have it on Switch now, but I haven’t had the time to start it.
Regardless, I have played a lot of Final Fantasy, and I only really like 1, 4, 7 and I guess 9. I have definitely wrestled with the idea that maybe Final Fantasy just isn’t for me as a series.
But at the same time: Final Fantasy almost WAS for me, at one point, and the fact that they keep straying further and further and further away from what I liked about the series means it’s valid for me to be bummed out about it. You’re welcome to like it for what it is, but it doesn’t mean I have to.
And Final Fantasy VII Remake definitely makes changes in line more with where modern Final Fantasy as a series has gone. That’s my whole problem.

I haven't played Pokemon games in years, but I'm considering trying one out. Any recommendations? Or should I just look at the most recent release, I think it's Sun & Moon?
Depends on what you want out of your game. I think Sun and Moon are excellent games in the series but also have some noteworthy flaws – they’re definitely paced very well, there’s a lot to do, and this is really the first Pokemon game that’s upped its ante, but it does still have its issues. They brought EXP scaling back from gen 5 (because everyone loved that so much), the Festival Plaza, the new Online Hub Thing, is just… genuinely awful (there is literally no way to view your own profile/stats. None. They never put that in as a feature. You have to fucking ask a friend to view it for you and tell you what it says), and I sure hope you like Fearows! And nothing else! Ever!
Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon (this gen’s Crystal/Emerald/Platinum) fixed the issue of there being Infinite Fearows everywhere and anything that isn’t a Fearow stupidly rare, and added some more cool stuff to the postgame, even if I’m still super mad about what they did with Lusamine in that version, and gave it some graphical updates and at least attempted to make all the clothes less terrible by adding shirts that aren’t the same empire cut in different colours.
Sumo/USUM have their perks, too. This is definitely the most RPG-ish that a Pokemon game has ever felt to me (and I do mean this in a good way). It takes a lot of interesting risks, and some of these risks were ill-advised (Festival Plaza), and some of them really made it stand out as a game (no gyms in this one!/no more HMs thank god hallelujah). As far as Pokemon games go, this is also one of the more difficult ones. If that’s the kind of experience you’re after, it’s absolutely worth playing, but I couldn’t say for sure if that’s the kind of thing you’re after to get you back into the series. It’s very cutscene heavy in the beginning, and depending on who you are that could be a dealbreaker or a draw. Gen 7 doesn’t want you to miss ANYTHING and will hold the shit out of your hand for a little while until it feels comfortable letting you swim in the deep end of the pool.
If you’re just looking for straight difficulty, I’d say definitely either Ultra Sun/Moon, or Platinum, which I think is still the hardest title to date. Cynthia is still best champion. Actual difficulty, too, not janky level curve difficult. There were a lot of battles that wound up genuinely challenging, and Platinum brought back the the trend Crystal started of having a rich postgame (and introduced Looker!). However, the engine for Gen 4 is just… agonisingly slow. That’s the one huge drawback these games have in particular.
If you do pick Gen 4, pick Platinum. There’s zero reason to play Diamond or Pearl. They’re weird, less good beta versions of Platinum where they hadn’t quite worked out a lot of design kinks and it shows. (Entering a gatehouse forces you off your bike, Surf speed is half your walking speed, the ONLY other Fire type available in the whole game besides the starter is Ponyta, and a lot of Pokemon that were introduced in this gen are unobtainable unless you import some stuff from Gen 3 to evolve?????? why Game Freak.)
This might be a weird thing to say, but if you want to get reintroduced, I could also recommend X and Y, which are vastly underrated and I think actually some of the stronger titles released. It has the vastly superior PSS for online functions, and while it is one of the easier games in the series, what really makes this game for me is the sheer Pokemon variety available, and how quickly the game lets you start teambuilding. There’s a huge variety of Pokemon available on nearly every route, and putting teams together that you’ve tracked down yourself is one of my favourite parts of trying a new Pokemon game. There’s this one awkward bit between badges 1 and 2 where you do a dumb thing with someone’s dog and a Snorlax because Gen 6 was trying very hard to reel the Genwunner crowd back in and not every method it used to do this was exactly graceful, and your dumb friends can be annoying sometimes, but the game is otherwise fairly fast-paced, with plenty of neat little distractions sprinkled throughout the region to where you never feel too restricted.
Plus, the clothes options are better. Just objectively. Cheaper, too.
On that note, ORAS incorporated a lot of the great features XY did, and is a great blend of those quality of life improvements coupled with the familiarity of a solid, older title. Not much to say about this one because Gen 3 is good and Gen 6 is good and they’re two great tastes that taste great together and complemented each other well. Only real downside to ORAS is, well… 8.5/10 too much water. Maybe it’s because I’ve played Gen 3 around 57 times (not an exaggeration), but the water routes are kind of annoying to get through.
WHOA CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENT but I really do feel like the Pokemon games have only gotten better with each installment. Kalos and Alola in particular feel so much more like living breathing worlds, and going back and playing Gen 1 again, even the remakes, puts it into stark contrast just how much has changed for the better in terms of making it feel like you’re actually exploring a region.
TL;DR: Pick Ultra Sun/Moon if you want a challenging, richer game experience with a solid story (even though Sun/Moon’s plot is technically better grumble grumble Lusamine Lusamine), XY if you really enjoyed teambuilding and fighting a wide variety of Pokemon and are into the aesthetic of the games, Platinum if you just want a challenge and don’t mind the Slow, and ORAS if you want Emerald with more quality of life and XY with more freedom.
Don’t start with HGSS. I know everyone loves it, and they’re definitely good titles, and yes it’s really cool you get to have your Pokemon behind you and explore two whole regions, but that level curve is a huuuuge bitch so if you’re not already willing to tolerate that for the sake of doing the whole other half of the game it can be very frustrating when it hits, and coupled with the slow engine, grinding becomes an exercise in frustration very quickly.
