salty&petty icha under the cut and dgm249 spoilers
my dgm fan toxic trait is that i can't stand kanda/allen as a ship while i genuinely love their dynamic in general and it was already making me groan to see how the promo material (which was a typical "they're standing next to each other, chill") was getting people to be really obnoxious about it
but now the ending of the dgm249 having this very heartful scene between Kanda and Allen is making me *groans* because it was a beautiful scene that makes me so damn emo and i'm so proud of those two of having grown so close and how much respect there is in this one scene, but the emotion is short lived because i know this scene will become the next big things shippers will talk about and it's already having me *sighs for eternity*
my curse and burden. I usually don't have like, strong aversion to ships so it kills me that i'm just this against the most popular ship on here in my fav fandom. It sucks to have a beautiful scene that actually makes you feel a lot and your only thought is "god people are going to be so obnoxious about it"
but here i am being the first one to be obnoxious about it. hourray.

FF VII VAs: refuse to take a firm stance in the ship wars (Aerith's English VA said that everyone's HCs are equally valid, so there's no need to fight) and now Cloud's is saying that just focusing on one relationship between two people and needing that to be romantic is a detriment to the entire character you claim to love

And they're all right about it, i'd love to say it's wild the fandom can't accept it, but i've been seeing this bullshit for so long now that i'm not even surprised.
Like neither are even telling you to stop shipping charas, they're just telling you to see the big picture and to not undermine the others relationship (esp any platonic ones) just to prompt up the romantic ones.
it's a perfectly reasonable stance to take, it's fucking wild that it's so hard for people to grasp it.
But that's this stupid shipwar for you. It never stopped and the remake coming out made the whole thing even worse </3 breaks my heart dude.
but i'm at least glad the VAs are standing their ground here because again, they're right, come on

starting to see returns of the discourse of "gbf gays bad because they're all insane", thankfully i'm also seeing people shutting it down by going "bro some of the most famous straight characters of gbf are also fully insane" (pointing to Elsam's dellusions over Yggy for instance) but it kills meeee and i hope this discourse won't start again with relink
gay gbf people are insane because literally everyone in gbf is insane, also because there's a lot of LGBT gbf characters and only a handful of straight ones, and then there's a lot that are left up to debate but are also written as playersexual so at this point it's silly to assume they're straight by default. get a grip.
Granblue's thesis is that love drives you insane hope it helps.

people have been calling Cagliostro "uncle" in the GBVSR guestbook and it's been triggering me SO MUCH
that's downright being transphobic on this one and it's so fucking annoying i want to hunt them down for sports.
Cags often gets people to dismiss her as trans because "since she changed her body by swapping it with magic it doesn't count", and it always annoys me because people come to argue the value of Cag as a trans rep while the transphobes are out there absolutely not caring about the nuances, they're going to dismiss her regardless.
Genuinely want to hit those people like oh my fucking god leave Cagliostro alone, keep her name out of your goddamn mouth!!!

i'm going to vent a little about French due to last reblog because i've actually been thinking about the translation thing for a while
OP justified that their reason to use "can it" instead of "shut the fuck up" as should be the translation in that context of Ta Gueule was that they wanted to express how Ta Gueule is short for "Ferme ta gueule" (lit: close your animal mouth) (bc yeah that's what Ta Gueule means) and they wanted to express the shortness of the expression, but, imo, as a french person who also has a diploma in english translation, in this case i think it's irrelevent. you want to express the violence of the term "ta gueule". "can it" doesn't approach this violence at all.
The other reason they gave is that "on TV you don't swear like that" so it's a localization effort and i'm so puzzled by this because like. yeah if you were translating a fiction that asked for immersion perhaps, but this feels irrelevant in there. the term is "ta gueule", the term is meant to be rude and violent and swearing, and while we don't have as much a taboo about swearing esp on TV than in English speaking countries, it's still the effect that is demanded by the "ta gueule".
but another thing that peeves me about this justification is that it's missing that it's the Groland. It's a satirical show that airs on Canal+ that is supposed to show the news for an absurd and fictional country.
Canal+ has always famously been vulgar as fuck. It has no filter. That's what we call "the Canal humor". We're already lax on swear words on TV, but Canal is *the* Chanel where it's part of the brand to be as gross as possible.
and it's especially bewildering to argue that you wouldn't show swearing on tV so it's why you translate Ta Gueule without the "shut the fuck up" impact when talking about translating the Groland that has always been famously the most trash it could get.
The first time i've seen sex depicted on TV with naked women when i was a kid was because the Groland made a skit of a job interview turning into a porn parody (and it wasn't on night hours or anything, it was around lunch hours).
To argue a sort of "trying not to be too harsh because swear words have a different impact in english than in french because french can afford to swear more than english" is like. completely missing that in this context it's a show that is famously more vulgar than anything else on TV.
The Groland was always synonymous with extremely adult and vulgar humor to me, so i find it bewildering to try to justify making the "Ta Gueule" less loaded than it is meant to be with the justification that "it's on TV so it should be translated more lightly" when talking about the Groland, out of all of the french programs that exist.
and i wouldn't be so peeved by it if OP hadn't defended themselves by saying people should read up about translation methodology before correcting them about it being "shut the fuck up" instead of just taking the L when people pointed out it's not what it says and how it's meant to be interpreted.
(obviously don't even *think* about being rude to OP about it, it literally doesn't matter, i'm just thinking about it bc i have a diploma in translation, and originally i only saw their "instead of lecturing me just read translation methodology books" justification and i was wondering what i was missing, but i read through the comments again and seeing the justification *as a french translator* just made me frown a lot so. yeah. just discussing it).

also sorry for insisting on the "do you BELIEVE people say the girls don't like each other" but every single time twitter understands i like ffvii it starts pushing LTD (Love Triangle Debate) content on my fucking TL and i swear to god i want to shred somethings sometimes.
Like yesterday it threw my way a video of Yuffie doing a silly dance, and Aerith following and trying to do like her, while Tifa walks off from the angle of the camera so you don't really see what she does, and the person posted it with a caption "omg Aerith you're so fucking embarassing, you're 21, act like it, no wonder our amazing Tifa had to walk out as she's the only mature person in here" and i started the day angry because are you out of your fucking mind.
Like why are you attacking Aerith on being silly omg, first of all there's no age cut off for that, second, she was definitely sharing something with Yuffie there, third of all, what the fuck is your problem. I'm sure people don't complain when Zack is being silly instead despite him being older than Aerith huh!!
And the dig on "even Tifa is embarassed" to show that TIFA instead is being the cool one and it's??? Tifa does all sort of silly things all the time, she's more on the shy side, but even so, you don't even see her in the video??? and even if it was because she was embarassed SHE WAS LOOKING AT YUFFIE NOT AERITH? And also being embarrassed by someone's behavior isn't a proof of them having a moral highground either.
Like it's mindboggling to me, those girls appreciate each other's presence, they've always been close friends, but people have rotten their mind to such a level into pitying the girls against one another for a fucking love triangle they just want every single moment to show their supperiority in some way.

the guy said "hey maybe instead of only focusing on shipping you could pay attention to the whole story everyone worked very hard to deliver?" and then people reply "omg no one want to read your political or shitty opinion" like lmao?
Like maybe they just meant about his shitty opinion and brought up the political one for free (but also why are you playing ff7 if you don't care about its politics like holy shit how many miles in the ground did you bury your own head), but if i was to reach the "political" reading to get from his ask is "the girls in this story aren't defined just by their relationship with the main male character and instead of just sexualizing them you should pay attention to the story" and people got mad at "what do you mean the girls aren't here for me to sexualize them and they're their own people outside of Cloud."

Sometimes i think people who idolize the wmtsb trilogy are just there for the tagic gay drama and not actually for the writing.... they were very good events with very good writing no doubt but sometimes their big fans obtusity shows that they valued something else more instead

like i adore wmtsb, as you guys know, i'm fascinated by its themes and the way it all works out in the end, and i aLSO am invested in the tragic gay drama of it all, but to see people react to relink's writing like this while they praise wmtsb it really does give a moment of "then why did you like wmtsb so much".

Damn when the ships with your friends arrived it remided me of that one 000 scene so much and i was like hollering in hype , that might seem clichè for some sure but it was honestly so good??? people just want to complain and I think they are forgetting to enjoy games for what they are, games?? not everything has to be an oscar worthy cinematic masterpiece or a best seller award winning level writing ..like if the game's fun it's fun
YEAH RIGHT but like, i don't see how it's not genuinely good??? like it's a pay off to a build up that is coherent with the themes explored in the stories. Like people tend to believe the presence of tropes itself means something is bad, but tropes are just... mechanisms to have a story works. Cliché are when things are overused and done without putting any thoughts into them, and it's not the case.
and like, i actually kinda disagree with how "it's just a game and should be appreciated for what it does as a game" because like, those people think that already lol they think the plot is serviceable because at least the gameplay is fire, and it's personally where i fundamentally disagree as someone who cares about stories and who have dedicated a part of my life analysing and decorticating how a story is made and how themes are supposed to work.
like i fundamentally disagree with the notion that "the game is fun but the plot is just serviceable" on that regard.
other than that a lot of the strong points of the game did remind me a lot of the wmtsb trilogy and it annoys me how the same people who just call the plot serviceable are also the same ones who'll point to wmtsb as the peak of granblue storytelling. like pick a side or something.
it's just quite frustrating, is all 😭

In that totally-for-real final boss fight against Angra Mainyu where it disappears your friends, that's super effective? I was just watching you play it and I felt the dread and fear
But even then you weren't fully alone because you had Lyria by your side and then she called Bahamut. It was so cool, the sequence was awesome
It was so nice, you had to do it twice ;)
Or the actual final boss fight where all the friends you made in Zegagrande come together and help you out and it's so hype??? It's really so, so good, if you shed your cocoon of irony and let yourself feel something for a bit

But yeah 100% agreed, i think Relink does things very well. It's pretty much a Granblue story but x100 and it's like... weird to me to be upset there's some Granblue general trope in it.
Also FOR REAL the Angra boss fight was so stressful and effective, and the way once we're finally reunited with Lyria it ends up in this fight?? it was SO cool!!
and yeah ahah.... soo cool i had to do it twice... ahaha... ahahaha. sobs.
but YEAH!!! YEAH!!! Like genuinely it's just... nice to feel like the bonds you make through the game are building up to something??? If we just met those characters and then they didn't come back later there wouldn't be as much of an attachement to them... idk it's so effectively done and it makes me believe in how relying on others will help you do anything you're set up to do.
and like. Lilith being a cult leader who is using her people and not actually expect to give back anything ends up being the foil to this thematic. What it's like when the group is made for self-interest VS wht it's like when the group actually want to help one another.
Like god forbid the themes of the game to be coherent with one another.
it's just. god. Idk man. I feel like people are too cynical about granblue now. which sucks because Granblue always strikes me as earnest, so it's :/

help twitter is now recommending me all sort of tweets complaining about relink's plot and stuff which is so disheartening to me. Granblue fans gonna granblue since they do that all the time after any event stories i'm starting to wonder if they even care to like, actually meet the story halfway to get emotionally invested, but it's also depressing to see that the honeymoon phase for a triple A video game release of Granblue lasted 20 days.
