(10.4.20) 1) today was our last day in Guilin in the Longji Terrace. How quickly 2 days and 1 night flew by! It was definitely an unique experience for me that I’ll never forget. 2) woke up early and watched the sun light shine over the fields as well the mist slowly rolling into the mountains 3) enjoyed a simple group breakfast of congee/noodles/eggs before we checked out of the hotel at 8 and embarked on a 4-hour hike throughout the fields and mountains 4) the hike itself was eye-opening/interesting/scary/physical. It rained nearly half of the time we were hiking and we had 50% of the gear we should’ve brought with us (we had poncho and hiking sticks but lacked proper boots and cap). What seemed like an eternity finally came to an end when we stopped at a local restaurant for lunch. There were a few slips, stuck in the mud, close calls throughout the hike but we did it! 5) after a hearty group lunch, we walked for another 30 minutes before we rode the coach bus from the mountains to the base and then changed to another bus that got us all the wait back to the railway station around 6pm 6) from there we all parted ways; we got ourselves a small bite since we wouldn’t be back to Guangzhou until 10pm; and then we finally boarded our train at 7pm and made it safely back to Guangzhou **Lesson(s) learned: having grown up in the city, this past weekend’s trip was an eye-opener for me into the lives of those who live/grew up/spend their entire lives in the mountains/fields. It’s very different than what a city life would be and makes me appreciate what I have. This weekend was interesting! On Friday morning Krissy and I attended the CES Asia tech trade show for work which was filled with new robots and technology (very Asian) and then we head out to the airport for Guilin. Once at the airport with just 1 hour till our flight left, I realized I had forgotten my passport at the hotel (1 hr away) :/ I was frantic and asked my friend Matt if he could get it from my hotel room & rush it to the airport in a taxi - he did (god bless him). After the most stressful anticipation just waiting to see if he'd arrive in time, he pulled up ran and gave me the passport and I ran through the airport cutting every line and rushing through security. I made the flight by 1 minute (literally) and almost had an asthma attack lol. But we landed safe in Guilin around midnight and checked into our super cute hostel ($7 a night). We had to be up early Saturday morning for the Longji Rice Terrace Fields DIY tour, which we quite literally did ourselves and got lost in the best way. It was about a 3 hour bus ride from our hostel in Guilin and once we arrived it started raining, it's kind of a rainforest climate there since it’s the south of China. The rain there was this odd mist at first, which felt good in the 90 degree heat. I wore mesh Nike Flyknit sneakers to hike up slippery rocks in the rain, which was not the best choice, but the rain actually felt good for once and we were motivated to reach the top of the trail (1.5 hour hike) to get the best view so I didn't even care. About halfway up, this cute little local lady gave us some boiled corn and showed us her dance moves. We slipped a few times on our hike back down as it was pouring, but luckily nothing bad! The bus ride home was a very soggy one but it was well worth it. We got back and walked around the city of Guilin, which was way more of a city then we had thought. Saturday night everyone was out and about but we were too tired to even drink, we just needed food and sleep!
