Sun Wukong woke with a jolt.

This dream again.

He clutched at his blanket with a white-knuckled grip, almost tearing into it with his claws. The ringing in his ears hadn’t ceased, unfortunately, and even the light of the rising sun wasn’t enough to get the nightmare out of his mind.

He’d had this dream often enough over the last millennia to know exactly how it went each time. It started with a memory of the brotherhood, lulling him into the false sense of security that were the dreams of those old times.

But it all started when Wukong tried to interact with Macaque, which was inevitable. He craved the presence of his moon too much not to seek him out like a moth. And Macaque would refuse to turn around, logical as he was, causing Wukong to pout and demand to see his face.

But he never would, as when Macaque turned, his face was just blank. Not off, not weird, just blank. Like all memory of it had been scrubbed from Wukong’s mind permanently.

But Wukong was persistent, as always, and he would strain to remember Macaque’s face and every single time-

It was easiest to remember Macaque’s glassy, unseeing eye.

[TAKEN PLACE AFTER LBD FIGHT]

The great sage held his enemy in his arms, stabilizing them both as he rose from the ground. With a shaken and uncertain breath, Macaque spoke few words; “I don’t want to go yet.. Stay..” His voice trailed off, his tone suggesting that there was more to say. Leaving his sentence unfinished the ginger monkey settled on the cold rock, holding his friend tightly. Mihou managed a jagged chuckle, followed by guilt. “I’ll stain your clothes.” Wukong whispered with a strong and confident tone, his love going unheard.

“Stain them.”

“Struggle”

Context: Set in another WIP AU, Macaque possesses a different kind of shadow manipulation that has a darker tale. The abilities he had been “given,” were made by the souls of innocent lives which he can hear them whisper to him if he is pressured or not able to control it correctly.

Wukong isn’t completely aware of it until the later future and is obviously upset and mad at him(mainly at the ones who had given macaque these abilties)
