every piece of you - max/daniel (15,841 words)
Daniel is so vibrant and loud and joyful, his tail only adds to that, it fits him perfectly. Max has imagined so many iterations of it, but he never thought it could be like this. He thinks that Daniel should get to be like this all the time if he wanted to be.

Harry Styles is a Mermaid
Disclaimer: I am sure I’m not the first to report and share these links and images. I thought people would find this interesting, so I’m sharing my foray down this rabbit hole. I’d welcome any additional links or thoughts related to Mermaids and the LGBTQ community.
If you know anyone that should be credited for pictures here, let me know. None of them belong to me.
***
In November 2014, Harry Styles had the image of a mermaid tattooed on his left forearm. The bare-chested siren joined multitudes of other nautical themed tattoos that litter his body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few days after the new tat appeared, he responded to a question at a meet and greet.
“I am a Mermaid,” he said.
I started the research on this post when I saw the gif with his quote about being a mermaid. Rest below the cut.
Harry Styles’ Mermaid Tattoo — The Real Reason Behind His New Ink – Hollywood Life
I’m not going to tell you why he said he’s a mermaid. I don’t know what it means to him. I have no idea. Maybe he simply likes mermaids. Maybe he feels like it matches the themes of his and Louis’ other nautical tattoos. I can't pretend to know.
“Mermaid” as a theme, though, has a decades long association with the LGBTQ community. And I think that’s interesting in light of the imagery that Harry himself has shared and seems to connect to.
Like, that time he wore a shirt with a famous line from The Little Mermaid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or in 2019, when he dressed as Ariel for a Saturday Night Live photoshoot.
Tumblr media
Did Harry Styles REALLY say 'I am a mermaid'? Truth behind viral photo and his Ariel look for 'SNL' | MEAWW
Or his his whole video for Music for a Sushi Restaurant:
youtube
I’ve seen the Little Mermaid probably dozens of times. My child and I watched it a lot when she was growing up. And while I always knew it was an allegory for being different, I didn’t think about the deeper meaning as it relates to the LGBTQ community until more recently.
Tumblr media
According to this article from the Smithsonian,
The central story of The Little Mermaid is, of course, 16-year-old Ariel’s identity crisis. She feels constrained by her patriarchal mer-society and senses she doesn’t belong. She yearns for another world, apart from her own, where she can be free from the limits of her rigid culture and conservative family. Her body is under the water, but her heart and mind are on land with people. She leads a double life. She is, essentially, “in the closet” (as symbolized by her “cavern”—or closet—of human artifacts, where the character-building song “Part of Your World” takes place).
Source: 'The Little Mermaid' Was Way More Subversive Than You Realized | Arts & Culture| Smithsonian Magazine  https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/little-mermaid-was-way-more-subversive-you-realized-180973464/
The Disney version was written by writer-producer-lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken.
Tumblr media
The character of Ursula, though, is the real LGBTQ icon. “Conceived by Ashman, Ursula is based on the famous cross-dressing performer Divine, who was associated with the openly gay filmmaker John Waters. As scholar Laura Sells explained in a 1995 anthology of essays, Ursula’s “Poor Unfortunate Souls” song is essentially a drag show instructing the naive mermaid on how to attract Prince Eric (who is conspicuously uninterested in Ariel and most content at sea with his all-male crew and manservant Grimsby). “In Ursula’s drag scene,” Sells wrote, “Ariel learns that gender is performance; Ursula doesn’t simply symbolize woman, she performs woman.” (same source as above).
A gay man in 1980s America, Ashman had personal experience with the culture wars over “family values” and gay rights. The “Reagan Revolution” marked the arrival of the long-brewing marriage of the Republican Party with conservative Christians and included a platform that was unfriendly to gay rights, to say the least. President Reagan ignored the AIDS epidemic that swept the nation (refusing to appropriate any federal funds for research or treatment), and Republicans in general claimed the “gay plague” was God’s punishment for homosexuality. Ashman saw the film as an opportunity to advance a social message through the medium of “family entertainment.” The last thing Americans would expect from Disney was a critique of patriarchy, but sure enough, Ashman’s The Little Mermaid is a gutsy film about gender and identity—a far cry from the staid Disney catalog. (same source).
Anyone who was around in 2015 knows about RBB/SBB. But if you didn’t, the Rainbow Bears (RBB/SBB, largely assumed to be created and curated by Harry and Louis) mentioned Divine on December 1, 2015. Just after they posted about her, Harry tweeted a lyric that alluded to Divine. See below.

There’s a whole other rabbit hole you can go down about John Waters (openly gay film director) and Divine and Pink Flamingos (Pink Flamingos: A Queer Beginner’s Guide to Family, Style and Not Giving a Sh*t | by Joe Corr | Medium. https://mandysweats.medium.com/pink-flamingos-a-queer-beginners-guide-to-family-style-and-not-giving-a-sh-t-fa9aa3e6c96f
Here’s another article that talks about The Little Mermaid being important to the LGBT community.
How The Little Mermaid Found A Place In The Hearts Of LGBTQ Fans | HuffPost UK Entertainment (huffingtonpost.co.uk)
There was a lot of speculation about Harry being potentially cast as Prince Eric in a live action version of the Little Mermaid. I’m not sure how serious those rumors were, but I can imagine based on all of this research, that he might have found the Prince wasn’t the character he related to most.
Harry Styles fans upset over 'Little Mermaid' reports | CNN https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/14/entertainment/harry-styles-little-mermaid-trnd/index.html
To go even further down the rabbit hole, go all the way back to the original story. The Hans Christian Anderson version has a tragic ending, that doesn’t end with the mermaid happily ever with the prince. There is some speculation that the story was an allegory for an unrequited love that Anderson had toward a straight acquaintance.
The Little Mermaid Is Really About Unrequited Gay Love | by Tamara Mitrofanova | Lessons from History | Medium
I also want to point out that Mermaids is a UK based charity organization, that “supports transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children and young people until their 20th birthday, as well as their families and professionals involved in their care.” About Mermaids - Mermaids (mermaidsuk.org.uk) https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/about-us/
All of this could be coincident to the true purpose behind what Harry’s tattoo means to him. We will likely never know its exact meaning to him.
But as time passes, and we see Harry waving various LGBTQ flags and hinting at being in the community himself, I think it might bear remembering that he said he WAS a mermaid. And I think that’s beautiful, Harry.

Every movie I watched in March ranked and reviewed
ok this is a long list and idk if I'm gonna do this every month but here we go! (also summary is in the tags if you just want to see the ranking for whatever reason.)
17. Baghead (2023)
Tumblr media
I watched this with my friend in an almost empty theater on a Wednesday afternoon and it was the funniest theatrical experience I've ever had. Movie sucks don't watch it. 2/10
16. The Help (2011)
Tumblr media
Alright before I say anything, I really wanted to like this film. I thought everything about it was pretty good aside from the script, which was so shallow and insincere that I just couldn't connect with it. It's not bad, I just wish it did more. 4/10
15. A Star is Born (2018)
Tumblr media
Kind of the same problems I had with The Help. Just an average movie that feels insincere and like it's trying too hard to be an academy darling. 5/10
14. The Little Mermaid / Русалочка (1976)
Tumblr media
I'm gonna be real for a second, I didn't mean to watch this . I wanted to watch the Czech film from the same year but me (dumbass who can't tell the difference between Russian and Czech) didn't realize I was watching the wrong film. Anyways it was fine. 5/10
13. Eraserhead (1977)
Tumblr media
I think movies with shorts scripts just irritate me. I love the atmosphere and the effects and what little script there is is fantastic, but this should've been a 50 minute short film at most. 6/10
12. Immaculate (2024)
Tumblr media
This movie has a lot of potential and I think Sydney Sweeney is a very talented actress who seems to be a promising producer, but its first act really drags it down for me. As it goes on it gets much weirder and relies less on cheap jump scares which I really like. It's worth seeing in my opinion. 6/10
11. But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)
Tumblr media
I don't really know how to word my thoughts on this movie, but I enjoyed it. Some of the performances and parts of the script are corny and it's not exactly incredible, but it succeeds as a queer chick flick. 7/10
10. Dogtooth / Κυνόδοντας (2009)
Tumblr media
This might become a bit of a trend, but I really can't explain how I feel about this film. Please read the IMDB parents guide before watching it for any tws necessary (that applies to most of the films on this list so if they look interesting, check the parents guide or ask me for a list of cws.) 7/10
9. Donkey Skin / Peau d'âne (1970)
Tumblr media
Silly and whimsical fairytale movie. Such an enjoyable little film. It's a little slow in some parts but it's very effective at capturing the feeling of a fairytale. 7/10
8. Dune: Part Two (2024)
Tumblr media
Ok I know it's unpopular to say that this is worse than the first one but the first like 20 minutes had a shockingly bad script for no reason? The movie gets definitely gets good but that first just was so forced in its humor and genuinely kind of baffling writing wise that it dragged it down. Great movie, just weakened by a lame opening. Also I watched this twice this month. 8/10
7. Blue Velvet (1986)
Tumblr media
This film is so cool oh my god. It's slightly repetitive in some scenes, and not in an intentional way, but other than that it's very interesting and it's a very captivating mystery. I watched this film without knowing anything about it and I recommend going in completely blind like I did. 8/10
6. Naked Lunch (1991)
Tumblr media
What the fuck??? 8/10
5. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Tumblr media
I can't really explain what I like about this movie other than it's just a good movie. It's a little too long and it's a bit unintentionally confusing but genuinely amazing even with those minor flaws. 8/10
4. Dune (2021)
Tumblr media
This movie is so yummy. Everyone I've talked to hates that it's a serious political drama but that's what I love about it and the fact that the sequel kind of gets rid of that stuff was a bummer. Incredible effects and just amazing cinematography. I watched this three times this month btw. (Also side note, this poster is fucking atrocious.) 9/10
3. Anatomy of a Fall (2023)
Tumblr media
Such an insanely good courtroom drama. Every scene is interesting and there aren't any parts where I was confused or bored. Incredibly well paced. 9/10
2. The Young Girls of Rochefort / Les demoiselles de Rochefort (1967)
Tumblr media
La La Land if it was good. 10/10
1. The Zone of Interest (2023)
Tumblr media
I don't think I'll ever be able to put into words how this movie makes me feel. Please go check it out and watch Jonathan Glazer's Oscar speech. 10/10

All the Stars and Teeth Book Review
Tumblr media
Spoilers Below
All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace My rating: 5 of 5 stars brief mention of personal mental health issues at the beginning I have loved, and I mean loved pirates and mermaids since I was really little. According to my mom The Little Mermaid was rewound on the VCR Player at minimum, three times a day before I was old enough for preschool. I even have a giant thigh tattoo of mermaid scales because there are scars underneath them from a very bad time in my life that I almost had to go to the hospital for, and I decided that I wanted mermaid scales because it would make me happy to see them every day. They still do after three years. I plan to get more pieces in random spots of my body by different artists as I get older.
Tumblr media
Anyway, you're not here for my life's story, but I thought I'd put this book and the elements of it in perspective for you! So, I've read Adalyn Grace before, but sort of backwards order. I read Belladonna first, then this one. I had no clue what to expect other than I have a signed paperback from YallFest and I needed to at least like the book. I fucking ate this up. This was amazing. Every minute of it held my attention. I tabbed so much, and would have tabbed more if I had not started reading prior to Christmas as I got an entire annotation kit for the holidays from my parents! This whole novel was so beautifully written, that a lot of the time I forgot this was her debut. I loved how one like myself could go into it assuming a love triangle was going to occur between Amora and Ferrick and Bastian, but Adalyn Grace so - well - gracefully subverted that expectation with Vataea! I thought that she was going to fail in the beginning, but in a way where her magic wouldn't show, not that she would lose control! I had no thought to the idea that she could lose her magic in that fight with Kaven, though I'm very aware looking back that the cave scene certainly set up for it, but it all moved so fast it didn't sink in until after! Even when Bastian is drunk and admits to being Kaven's brother after the whole "no secrets talk", I prepared for a "I hate you now I'm gonna get captured by walking away and have to be saved" or something like that, but Amora shocked me with her maturity an the way she handled the situation I was so delighted! I love the way magic works in this world, the world-building was immaculate, there's very little that I didn't get out of this that I wish I had. In fact only two things did I wish for at the end - one, more time and possibly even points of view with Vataea, and same with Ferrick, though Vataea was definitely more important to me. Now I'm not sure if we'll get her pov in the next one, but I hope we'll at least get to spend more time with her! Also this would make a phenomenal film oh my god! Anyway I'm gonna go debate whether to start the next book right now or read one of my new books!
