Every so often I’ll try to peek into fandoms for other video games/shows/movies and see if they’re worth joining and….ugh.
I’m not gonna lie. It just makes me feel so lucky to be apart of the Soulsborne fandom in general. I have been here for years now and I have never felt the stress or strain of classic fandom toxicity the way I do when I spend only a day or two trying to rummage through other fandoms. Negative fan behavior and strife has literally kept me out of so many other online communities. I rarely feel secure anywhere else.
But Soulsborne? Sure, we have the stuck-up git gud crowd that doesn’t understand what git gud really means, we have bitter casuals that spam the most overpowered weapons until those weapons get nerfed and then they start screaming, we have some occasional lore disagreements that usually involve something to do with old men and their dolls, we sometimes have sibling-style fights over the second Dark Souls game that lead to some pretty intense verbal exchanges, though the second a FromSoftware hater gets involved, everyone teams up and roasts them for daring to diss any Dark Souls game because how dare you.
But that’s about it. Ship wars are almost nonexistent/extremely tamed, there aren’t fandom morality teams, there aren’t flocks of raging teens attacking voice actors or writers, there aren’t internet-viral horror stories about the utter madness of gatekeeping revolutions or bullying campaigns, etc..
It’s just chill and full of good memes and people that would be considered clinically insane if they ever casually said the things they say when discussing lore intricacies. No girl, you can’t explain to your neighbor why you believe that consuming three umbilical cords, killing the moon, and ascending to squidhood is the best possible option to choose when trapped in a world enslaved to The Cycle, but you absolutely can say that here! Let’s talk about it!!
Hell, we even have dozens of stories and anecdotes about how Dark Souls helped people through depression and anxiety. I mean, Solaire exists. Japanese artists draw some of the cutest chibi art of him and other wholesome characters as though we were in a fandom for kids. Or rather, how kid fandoms were meant to be. Ha.
Oh and, speaking of artists? The content creators in this fandom? You guys are literally some of the most talented people I’ve ever seen. The streamers, the artists, the writers, the lore freaks, the data-miners, the musicians, the comedy crowd, the illustrators, the comic/zine creators, the meme lords? This community thrives on these people. We are drowning in content every day thanks to them!
I just love it here. It’s like my Firelink Shrine. A safe little haven full of weird people that are actually my friends. I’ve gotten through some of the heaviest points in my life thus far with undeniable encouragement from these damn games and the community built around them. This is what fandoms were meant to be, my friends.

midge is soooo my little barbie doll i literally love just drawing her in outfits and it's good every single time. i have a few plans for her that i wanna do related to her barbie-ness but theyre all larger undertakings and i don't currently have time or energy to draw much at all because i have to "pay bills".
BUT!! i will release my ideas to the public.. for now.. i Really wanna make a midge zine. i'm torn btwn making one of her in the style of different fashion dolls but specifially ones that inspire her looks or remind me of her (barbie, rainbow high, monster high, etc). i also saw the cutest little doll sized barbie magazine the other day and it was a little fashion catalogue for barbies and i thought it was SO cute so i'd love to do that. and then also i'd love to do a fake magazine interview page with her!
i also want to check out the new dolly parton memoir from my library bc i saw a couple pages of it recently and i'd LOVE to look thru all her iconic outfits!! i think it'd really inspire me for some midge looks + i really love dolly #texan. maybe even some maisie looks if i'm feeling crazy !

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?: i am honestly surprised i wrote anything at all, this year has suuuucked!
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?: our flag means death was a surprise! i even saw the trailer in january and thought it looked very dumb (the trailer was... not great). the last thing i expected was that it would have a fandom, much less that i would be into it.
What's your favorite story of the year?: space growlr, hands down. i literally had so much fun with it, mixing goofiness with romance and writing something for me.
Did you take any writing risks this year?: i was gonna say no, but i did technically write furry fanfic, and that's a whole new genre for me. i doubt i did it any true justice.
Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?: keep survivin', meet zine deadlines, work on your plotting and pacing skills, & spice up the prose a little babes.
My best story of the year: i'm going to say space growlr again, bc it may be the only one i like.
My most popular story of the year: stay the course, which i feel caught the last wave of ofmd fandom before it went into hibernation. i am slow! (and honestly, dw fanfic world is sooo dead right now, and i am writing rarepairs. there's no competition.)
Story that was most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: again, space growlr!!! because no one appreciates danvanista like the ship deserves!!!! hmph!!
Most fun to write: oh my god are all of these answers going to be 'the silly furry rarepair fanfiction that three people read' oh no
Single sexiest (or cutest) moment: somehow i didn't post a real smutfic this year, so i'm gonna go with fourteen/simm punching each other silly and then having a dumb makeout session fight to see who wins. they're so dumb and i missed them.
Hardest to write: stupid! pirate! story!!! i don't even know WHAT that story is. it needs like... probably half of it cut out and the last chapter rewritten. idk man i don't get paid for this.
Biggest disappointment: me ngl i was hoping that posting updates on the pirate fic week-by-week would somehow encourage people to comment or talk to me about the fic, and that i'd make friends, but i only had one or two people follow it as a WIP! i'm never doing anything for ~the engagement~ ever again haha.
Biggest surprise: that i somehow ended up writing rassilon/omega smut as a joke!! it took me a half hour and was easier than anything! i will do absolutely anything for the bit, huh.
Favorite lines: because i only posted 4 fics this year, i'm just gonna drop a line from each.

happy weekend dearest!
other than the snow angels, i haven’t done much.,, just been cozying it up with coffee and blankets at home hehe. 30 degrees... amazing. ideal feeling like a rotisserie chicken weather. 😌 bc of global warming we’ve been having some great summers these past few years. it even gets to 30 degrees as well which was unheard of tbh.

I care for most if not all hero-related characters in bnha! But if with care you mean if any dekusquad member is between my favorite characters/if I care enough about any of them to draw them more than once every blue moon, then my Todoroki tag might tip you off, there lol

In general, a zine is an amatorially published magazine! Specifically tho here we’re talking about fanzines, so magazines put together and published by fans for other fans! The ones I’m taking part in are both about kiribaku, and will include both fanart (fancomics included) and fanfics! Depending on how much you wish to spend on it, you can also buy a bundle with fanmade merch too, and the Sixth Wheel zine is gonna have a pdf version too, in case you’d prefer to buy it like that! They’re super cool projects I’m insanely happy I got invited to take part in!!!!

They’re one of my main ships in the fandom honestly, but since they’re sorta hard to draw for me I rarely end up drawing them? I do still love them with all my heart tho! Sorry this took me an age to answer - I have answered this question a while back, I think it might be in my art tips tag! But to go through it fast, my process is something like
find a line or an exchange I want to deliver, or a topic I want discussed (usually happens randomly as I’m doing other things)
spend a million years just staring at a wall or at my ceiling or anything else as I build a whole scene in my mind to have the lines or topic take the form of an actual comic (might take two minutes, might take a month)
draw a rough sketch of the whole comic - I do this with all panels (and pages, when I separate a comic in pages) on the same canvas, so that I can look at the whole scene all together and get a good sense of the general flow of the storytelling. This process includes cutting panels, moving panels around, reshaping panels, trying different poses and angles for the same panels to find the right one, writing and deleting and re-writing lines till I’m sure the wording is what I’m going for*
line the panels - I mean the actual panels, the straight lines delimitating the panel, I line them all first and put them on a separate layer
line the people!! All the characters in every panel are lined in this stage
line the backgrounds! In case there are backgrounds and the comic is meant to stay in black and white, if not then color the backgrounds! (I always start coloring from the backgrounds cause they’re the boring parts and if I leave them for last I never do them ever #rip)
in case of black and white comics, we fill in flat, gray-scale colors at this point (or, as I’ve lately started doing, I only put down shadows and leave it at that). If it’s in colors, we color the people!
Write down the dialogue!! *at this point we change a lot of the dialogue again because enough time has passed since I sketched it that I changed my mind on everything, don’t be like me
you’re done!
All of it is done on one single canvas, unless it’s a comic with separate paneled pages in which case they’re all done on their own canvas but still drawn all together. That’s about it, hope it was at least a little bit useful!

I’m experimenting with doing a weekly round-up of articles, videos and other things that grab my attention. It may evolve into an email newsletter or a feature on my proper blog but for now, I’ll do this every Wednesday.
I’ve been thinking a lot about cybersecurity lately and how those of us who are particularly vulnerable in the age of Trump can protect ourselves. This article will walk you through the process of removing your personal information from online aggregators. This MOOC about cybersecurity starts next week. I did it in January and for ~2 hours of effort per week, got quite a lot out of it.

really long post about my frank show in chicago:
ok so overall, this wasn’t my favorite frank show but it was definitely awesome. this was my 4th show, and today when i’m writing this i’ll go see my 5th!!! it was at the bottom lounge in chicago which i’d never been to before.
so a couple of like. shitty things first: the staff were pretty rude. they rushed a lot of people out of the venue and then wouldn’t let them stay inside afterwards. a lot of people left and didn’t get to stay to meet frank. also. waiting for the show in the rain. wouldn’t recommend it.
so of the frank shows ive been to, this fucking crowd sucked. i was stuck behind this group of four kids that i was pretty much ready to punch in the fucking face after the show, not only did they not move the entire time, they didn’t even clap or cheer when songs ended. like what the FUCK!!?!? why are you even here!!!!!!!!!! they just kept glaring at me for fucking moving and having a good time and pushing into them. by a few songs in, i started pushing them on purpose because they were being so annoying so i’m like u know what fuck yourselves im having a good time. if ur gonna come to a show and u dont want to move, dont stand in the fucking front.
there was like. no pit for dear percocet so i had to just make my own. kids from above paragraph were NOT HAPPY ABOUT THAT. whatever.
anyways enough ranting good things now!!!!!! i was standing on evan’s side so i got to see him a lot and that was fucking rad, i could see frank pretty well too!!! and holy shit. frank was so fucking beautiful??? his hair looked amazing and he was smiley and talkative and it was really great he had so much energy!!!!!!!!
honestly so much of the actual set was such a blur i was just having a good time, i took some pics on a disposable camera but nothing else so i dont really have anything to attach sry. my favs of this set were i’ll let you down and stage 4, i love the live version of stage 4 he does, it makes me cry.....oh and the fucking cover they did with dave hause was AMAZING.
anyways i had a great time oceans kicked ass, my brother held me up on his shoulder for joyriding and there wasn’t really a possibility of crowdsurfing
after the show we waited around in the bar while staff were being dicks, probably about 1-2 hrs, a lot of people had cleared out by this time. we went outside to get into a line of about 15 people to meet frank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i went up to frank and i shook his hand and i was like “hey i’m amber, this is my brother evan!” and evan shook his hand and said hi and i’m like “whenever u say ‘this is my brother evan’ on stage i’m like ME TOO!” and frank thought that was funny he was super chilled despite being fucking freezing i dont know how he does it. he was literally radiating pure goodness. anyways i’m like “i brought u something” and hes like “oh really?” in the cutest voice like kill me and i pull out my zine (oh also earlier i managed to give Evan his copy, he’s like “cool , thank you!!!”) and frank recognizes it right away and is like “i saw this, evan showed me his, it’s really cool!!” and i’m like “omg well here is your own copy!” and he said “can i ask you something, will you sign it?” and i died the end. and he opened the back page and was like “oh i only have a black marker. is here ok?” on one of the pages and i’m like oh yeah and signed it and he was like <3 <3 i was like can we take a picture? and he’s like yeah totally. so my bro takes his phone to take it and frank pulls me in like REALLY CLOSE, HE WAS BASICALLY HUGGING ME WITH ONE ARM he was super soft and squishy from all his layers it was the best moment of my life and my bro tries to take a pic but its raining and his phone got all fucked up :///
so then i took my brothers pic and i do it on my ipod and i turn on the flash, right as i take it this stoned guy bursts out of the building and runs in front of the camera saying some shit like “follow your dreams!!!!!” i dont even remember he was stoned out of his mind and hes like omg im so sorry!!!!!! and im like its nbd and we tried another pic and it turned out shitty so i’m just like “its ok, we can get a better one tomorrow.” and franks like “oh is the majestic a cool venue?” and i’m like “yeah its one of my favorites!” and hes like “im pretty sure i’ve played there before..” and i’m like “yeah with against me!” and it was nice to like. chat with him in a normal way and not be all weird and anxious, he’s so easy to talk to. after that we said bye to him and thanked him, i also had given him the zines for alex and matt because i didn’t see them after the show.
he was such an angel this was the best time i got to meet him ;~;

PH Photography 2016 highlights and 2017 Wishlist
How appropriate it was that the music that was blasting when I entered a Christmas party organized by photographers was the 70’s disco classic, Sumayaw Sumunod by Boyfriends (Literally translated, the title means Dance Follow). The title was a great way to describe the events of the world in 2016. You either dance to your own beat or follow suit. Although as much as 2016 was a dreadful year in human history, I feel that this was a great year for Philippine photography. A year full of growth for the medium not just in the practices of the photographer but also full of historical events in which photography responded.
And so as the song goes, my thoughts raced at what happened in 2016 for Philippine Photography:
Zines. Zines Everywhere.
There was an unprecedented number released in 2016. I assume that the drivers for the growth are the groups cultivating creative expression in universities and independent small press organizations. There's also the opportunities for work to be seen such as in the different Zine festivals.
As usual, it came in different forms and messages. I’d like to point out that there is an increase in what I would like to now call photobooklets (I should write about this on its own). Not as large scale in narrative or production as a full photo book but also not as inexpensively made and aesthetically liberal as a zine. I'm not sure if this made up classification is unique to the Philippines (or developing countries for that matter) but it is interesting developments in the production methods of artists.
Activated and Adapted Spaces for photography
Another proof of growth is the opening of spaces to photography, from new galleries exclusive to photography to spaces that can be adapted for exhibitions. I've seen bars, drinking places, empty warehouses, and places where photography is least expected. Other galleries were also keen to show photographic works and talks.
This can indicate that the art establishment and public is slowly showing interest in the potential of photography as a viable medium. It is also possible that Photographers are getting more and more resourceful in finding ways to show their work. Either way, this is a great trend that I hope will continue for 2017.
Photographic Exhibitions Increased
There was a weekend that I had to visit 4 exhibitions in a day. It was exhausting but it is a good proof that the scene is bustling. Even major institutions such as the Ayala Museum, hosted great shows, most notably, Yee I Lann’s work which touches on our Filipino sensibilities and even showed us a lesson for our own history. Another notable exhibition. Jippy Pascua and Dennese Victoria’s Myth is groundbreaking in its execution and process.
It may have been difficult to go and see all of these shows but I’d prefer it than nothing. Here’s to hoping for more.
Strong Presence in fairs and institutions overseas
It felt like every month, there was news of somebody getting international exposure either from a festival, respected institution, or notable publication. Art Dubai had a great show on artist-run spaces that featured THOUSANDFOLD and bringing with them the work of Czar Kristoff (His "Photobooklet" Configurations is one of the best of 2016) and Gino Javier. Then, Gian Cruz’s You as me made the rounds in various festivals and was also in the spotlight with Geloy Concepcion’s Reyna De las Flores for the Pride Photo Awards. I’ve also lost track of the number of times I saw Lawrence Sumulong get recognition this year (My favorite is The Last of Us which got him the Allard Prize For International Integrity). Noel Cellis also bagged the Varenne Foundation Photo Award and landing his photo as one of TIME’s best of 2016. I’ve also been fortunate to be part of this trend with my presentation in the Museum of Photography - Seoul about my ongoing research on Philippine Photozines.
PH Gender Representation
There was a click-bait listicle last year that named the cutest female photographers. In response to that, I made my own list of PH photographers that you must see but I didn’t indicate their that all the names I placed there were all women both emerging and established in various genres of photography.
I’ve come to realize that the PH has a good gender representation when it comes to photographers. There’s always a presence of women in exhibits, contests, and other opportunities for work. I guess it helps that we have TALA Collective and other women active in the top of the industry. Now the question is that representation recognized? Nope. I feel the general mood is still that women photographers are still looked down upon.
However, I don’t have the numbers to support this realization. Here’s to hoping somebody makes the study and come up with the concrete number. Hopefully, it will result in making the industry better for all.
Photojournalism as always
As always. Photojournalism has always been the PH’s bread and butter. What I do admire from our working Pj's are the conditions they are now operating. Not just the environmental conditions but the societal conditions. The post-truth era has come to question the role of journalism and made it difficult for anyone working in the news. Thankfully, our photojournalists are stepping up and defending not just their craft but the stories and issues they are trying to tell.
As usual, TOKWA collective and TALA photo collective are leading the charge setting a good framework for how collectives can work. Although there are a lot hungry and hardworking freelancers are also pushing it.
The infrastructure for good photography is growing
We now have libraries dedicated to photobooks and zines, galleries like Vetro, which exclusive to photography have appeared, print labs have also sprouted that understand the needs of photographers, book designers (Most notably Karl Castro) have emerged that know understood the visual medium, and Mapa books launching Tommy Hafalla’s book while Veejay Villafranca’s much awaited Signos will follow in 2017.
The structure that can support good photography is slowly growing. Perhaps the best thing that happened in 2016.
Wishlist
I think it really was an up year for photography but that doesn’t mean there are things that needed to be worked on or improved. Here are some of my personal thoughts on how the scene can be improved.
No room for mediocrity
I still see a lot of works that are just going through the motions. A project for project’s sake. It came to a full head for me when I realize I’m committing the same mediocre practice. In these times when we can use art to open eyes and educate, the slightest hint of pretentiousness or personal indulgence should not be tolerated. There should be no more room for mediocrity. You can either have something that is well planned with all the sincerity you can muster or make it something that fluidly mixes with your life and your sensibilities. Hans Aarsman’s observations about photography should be in full effect.
For the international Media to recognize our local photojournalists
We have a lot of great talent here working on stories with immersing themselves in the thick of it. Yet western media insists on bringing their people in. I wonder why they don’t trust the boots on the ground. I do know that there is a small number who are already correspondents and shooting wires for international agencies and I hope it increases. Then again, I don’t have solid figures to see if this is an actual trend. I’m basing it off from my observations especially the coverage of the war on drugs.
Maybe the problem is the other way around, maybe we need to reach out there more and demand that we can tell our own stories in our own manner. Leverage our command of the English language to insist that we can cater to a western audience. Well, this is why it is a wish list Hopefully western media wakes up from their colonial eyes and build connections here. Those that already did, good on you.
Inclusivity is the key
I want the scene to be more inclusive of the talents outside of Metro Manila. My favorite works this year came from Cebu (Patricia Zosa’s Taste of Summer) and Laguna respectively (Asshulz’s The Face of a Marcos Apologist). Uniting the 7,107 islands has always been a challenge ever since not just for art. The internet is a great equalizer but it can only do so much. I think platforms should make an effort to have a presence in the different regions of the country. Not just in highlighting the work but finding ways for work to be consumed in those areas.
And speaking of platforms…
Platforms for a mass audience
What we have so far is photographers looking at other photographers works. I think the initiatives for 2017 should be to develop programs that would be great for a mass audience not critical of photography. I’ve always had that dream of making a person understand the consequences and beauty of the mundane practice of uploading a photo. The masses doesn’t need to know Barthes or Szarkowski but just to have a grasp on what a photograph is and what can it do.
The film industry has been successful in its attempt this year with MMFF. I think we can do the same. We can start doing the little things by dropping the academic or art speak. More importantly, better writing. This brings me to my next wish...
More about the work and less about the self
I’d love for the platforms to be about the work. Showcase them in a manner that the platform is merely a vessel of delivery. Branding does play a part in the success of platforms but it shouldn’t be what the audience would remember. For a platform to stand out, it has to show not just good works but an avenue for critical discourse. If you are not offering insight, perhaps I should just visit the work on their portfolios and see it there.
As for photographers, what are you trying to say and why are you saying it? This is why Authorship is important. Your work should be remembered, not you. Even if you argue that the work is about the commodification of yourself, what the audience should take away is how good, memorable, or impactful your work was. I don’t want to see works with “This is my personal view of the city” or any iteration of it in an artist statement.
This is why critical discourse on the work is important. If the audience is educated and demanding of good work then the artists have to step up and demand of themselves great work. A creative economy that sustains itself.
Sustainability
I will not undermine the importance of financial support for the further growth of the infrastructure. A challenge for platforms is to build that audience and find ways to be economically viable as a career. It is a problem that I also experience for this platform. As much as I want to focus my time chronicling works and opening them for critical discourse, I need to prioritize paying the bills and finding ways to have money for food. That is a problem that is all too common in the scene from artists, photojournalists, and platforms.
Hopefully, growth means opportunities that create a demand for good work. There’s always grants to apply for, investors to entice, and books/zines to sell but the key is finding a way without compromising the work.
In Closing
As I take a few more swigs of my beer from the Christmas party, I can’t help but be afraid of 2017. Will the trends of 2016 continue? Will all my heroes die and the enemies of good rise to power? Are we really going to be ok? Will my cynical brain just shut up?
Before I even finished my thoughts, they passed me the mic to sing some songs. That’s what we have to do really, we simply step up and continue. If photography can grow in what can be considered a down year, I think we’re going to be ok.
Just like the line in the Boyfriends’ Sumayaw Sumond says:

I’d like to take the time to offer my sincere condolences to one of the kindest gentlemen I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, Manuel “Noli” Yamsuan Jr. who passed away in late 2016. He was an amazing photographer. A kind man and is a role model for those practicing photography. He is an important figure in the roman catholic community as well with his signature work is covering the popes that visit the country. Tokwa Collective made a great video about “Ka Noli” for ucanews and I had the wonderful opportunity to interview him about his work for Rappler. I would deeply appreciate for you to take the time and look at his work.

That honestly depends on a lot of factors - which tools I’m using, how many characters there are in the drawing/if it’s full body or not, how used to drawing the character I am, how big is the canvas, if I already have a clear idea of what I mean to draw or not, how precise I want to be with lines and stuff.
That Yuuto sketch I posted yesterday took me about 40 minutes I think, and over half of it was spent trying to figure out how I was supposed to draw him since it was the first time I drew him - the tools I used are the ones I use when I want to be fast and don’t care about being sloppy. A small random Kirishima bust properly lined and colored could take me five minutes to sketch and line and as many to color on a good day, cause I’ve drawn him so many times by now I don’t even have to think to draw him. Deku, on the other hand, can take me an hour even just to sketch, I can’t seem to grasp how I’m supposed to draw him at all.
Sorry, it really depends on a lot of things, I can’t give a proper answer to this :(
