after the cbt post I'm really unsure if I even want to apply for counselling now
the whole point of looking for therapy was to get help but if it makes things worse then maybe I should just carry on trying to do it myself?
I don't fuckin know
that was meant to be my out for feeling like this what the fuck do I do now
Like. First off this is about CBT, not about counseling generally, which has been really useful once I've found the right process. I don't know if you're in the UK or not, but while accessing NHS counseling hasn't always been easy and it took a while to find the right fit, when I did get a counselor and approach that fit my needs it jumped my healing forwards by miles, it really can be a lifesaver (plus tbh if you're really deep in the doldrums, it can help just by giving you some structure and space). Don't stop looking for counseling because it absolutely can make a huge positive difference, I don't know where I'd be without the counseling I got from the rape crisis center and the NHS. There's a lot of types of therapy/counselling out there and what works for you isn't something I can predict - for me what I've reacted to best is freeform talk therapy, but other people find that really hard to engage with and prefer more structured or theoretical therapies, and the NHS offer a lot of different ones (they just tend to jump to CBT first).
So, beyond that; some people do find CBT really helpful. But the way the NHS specifically uses CBT is outside its recommended use, which is treatment for OCD, BPD, anxiety and some PTSD symptoms (although not PTSD itself). The NHS basically uses it as a first stop for pretty much all mental health patients as far as I can tell (because, as I say, it's cheap and easy to apply) so, much like most people with MH problems I know have been on Citalopram (which is their first stop SSRI), most people I know with MH problems have been to CBT sessions. And with that range of problems, most of them won't find what they need in CBT, which, again, despite how it's currently used, is not designed as a general purpose treatment but specifically to help manage repetitive thought and behaviour patterns.
For some people, managing thought and behaviour patterns is what they need, at least temporarily. My partner found it very helpful to keep him out of breakdown territory during a hard time, and so have several friends I know (seems to have positive impacts particularly on friends diagnosed with BPD bc BPD diagnostic criteria, which focus on intense reaction and toxic thought spirals, line up really well with what CBT is designed to help with).
I think the way in which it's harmed me and others isn't the actual treatment, but the fact that it's treated as if it Should Work and that can make you feel way worse if everyone tells you 'CBT and mindfulness is a magic cure that fixes all your brain problems' and then it. doesn't. because your specific problem isn't what is designed to fix. and I think that harm is mitigated by knowing that a) what works for you is highly personal even within diagnoses, b) at the time you get CBT you probably don't have a concrete diagnosis beyond Something Ain't Right and c) CBT, even when it's right for you, isn't meant to be the end point.
CBT is, specifically, a stop-gap. It's meant to help you keep going with your life while you sort stuff out. Again, because of budget reasons the NHS kind of hope that your problems won't be too bad so that CBT will give you a good enough stable starting point to sort your own shit out without further support, which does work for some people, but for most of us CBT should be part of a larger treatment journey if used at all. CBT is a bandage - it doesn't close the wound, but where it works it stops you bleeding out long enough to either get to a hospital or for your body to heal itself.
I'm not going to lie to you - for a lot of us, getting through to the point where we're accessing the right treatment can be a slog. And because of how the NHS works, it can mean going to CBT, finding it doesn't work for you, and gritting your teeth through a six session course so you can go back to your doctor and say 'see, this didn't work for me and the CBT people agree, what else ya got?' My partner's just sat through 14 sessions of group therapy he found extremely stupidly designed specifically because sometimes that's what you gotta do to get referred on for one-on-one talk therapy, which is what he actually needs.
Like I say, the harm comes when you're made to feel like you're failing therapy. You don't fail therapy. Therapy that isn't working just isn't the right setup for you for whatever reason and that's not a flaw in you, there is no universal catchall therapeutic method. It's always going to be trial and error and if you are able to hold in mind that you're not Bad for finding a counseling style or methodology unhelpful, off-putting or alienating, then badly-fitted therapy shouldn't be nearly as harmful as trying to struggle on manfully alone.
The hardest but most rewarding part for me was the process of learning that I could just say 'this isn't working for me because XYZ, can we try a different approach' and...nothing bad would happen. I wouldn't lose my access to counseling and nobody shouted at me, and when I said 'this isn't working can we change it'...things got better. I was having an absolutely shit and frustrating time with my NHS counselor, I was finding going to counseling a huge stress, and after stewing for a couple of weeks I blew up and said 'I don't like this, this or this, I feel talked down to when you do this, I don't feel like you're listening to me about this, and this thing you're doing keeps making me feel worse' and he got defensive. but he also. changed his practise immediately. and we ended up having a really fantastic and productive 6 months of counseling and I am in private therapy now but I keep referring back to the work he and I did together because it was so useful for me.
So like the takeaways for me are a) know that the fact that this counseling might suck for you doesn't mean counseling in general won't be helpful, there's always going to be some trial and error to find the right fit, b) if it does suck, don't suffer in silence, tell them! if you're sitting there hating it, they're not getting anything out of that either so just let them know that you're uncomfortable, finding it hard to engage, etc (I know this can be really hard and I know for me I only started being able to push back when I was already a couple of years into my treatment journey but do what you can do to communicate your fears) and c) when it works it works.
Getting counseling that works is a journey. It can be wearing and esoteric and a pain in the ass, and sometimes you just don't click with a therapy and sometimes you just don't click with the counselor, but it is absolutely worth pushing through the bullshit because a) change often happens gradually while you're not looking and b) finding a concept who works for you absolutely can change your life super fast. It took me a couple of tries but when I found a counselor and approach that worked for me I managed within 16 sessions to get out of my house, to get a job I liked for the first time, to go out and meet people for the first time in a city I'd been in for 3 years, and to cut out a lot of the people who were making my life unsafe. It's so worth it but it is a journey that takes time and trial and error, so the sooner you start the sooner you're likely to get somewhere that helps you.
#sorry i went on a lot here i just#i need you to know that counseling is a really broad field and just because one form of counseling might not work for you#doesn't mean it's all useless#you just need to find the right fit for where you're at#and it's extremely worth doing#it doesn't feel like it's getting better all at once#I'm sorry but if you go in with that hope it'll hit you hard#when you find the right fit it'll feel like change is so painfully incremental and slow#but one day you'll suddenly realise you're happier than you've been in years#everyone i know who's been in counseling that's felt productive has had that experience in the first year or so of going#WAIT FUCK IS THIS WHAT NORMAL FEELS LIKE?#like idk if you have SAD but i get this feeling every spring 'wow have i just been miserable for six months wtf? is this what happy is?'#and the healing process feels like that on a larger scale like day to day you barely notice a difference but you look back after a year#and think 'i don't remember what it felt like to never feel like anything would be good again' and you go WAIT!#THAT WAS THE COUNSELING! TFW THERAPY HITS!!!#like there are times it can feel like a slog or like REALLY PAINFUL#the first 6 months i was in therapy i cracked open like an egg i went everywhere i basically had a full on breakdown#but after i came out the other side i was like WAIT FUCK I SEE SUNLIGHT I CAN FEEL JOY AGAIN#and the way you can tell imo is. do you dread counseling sessions? or are you desperate to get to them?#bc. some pain is getting punched and some is relocating a joint. it's needed pain and you know as it's happening that it's needed.#so if it sucks also. think about why it sucks and how you feel about it.#does counseling make you bored angry anxious or frustrated? might not be the right fit#does it feel like cracking open a dam and getting swamped? you might just be going through the pain phase of healing

The Seeker (Harry Potter!AU #5) (PG15)
Tumblr media
> genre : angst, fluff
> pairing : kim namjoon x reader
> words : 1.8k
> warning : depression, language, mention of sexual intercourse
> Kim Namjoon (Gryffindor, 7th yr) has always been a largely appreciated prodig. But lately, he is haunted by a sort of illusory obsession. (there is not much to this it’s more like a prompt i’ve never got around to develop, i was in a weird mood, angst, fluff)
/The Harry Potter!AU Masterlist/
Namjoon is sitting at the desk he always occupies during his free time. His elbows dig hard on the wood, hands holding his head by the temples with effort. It's past 11 pm and that well-furnished head of his weighs too much for his neck to carry alone. It seems the latter is not carrying any of it anymore as you watch his eyelids, fluttering behind his thick glasses in a threatening slow pace. He is about to slump, face first, on the surface of the hard table, you can tell.
“Hey, Namjoon-ah.”
He jumps in fright, a loud thud echoing in the room as his knee bump hard against the table. You wince slightly, biting back an amused smile when he massages the painful spot with a grimace.
“You scared the shit out of me.”
“Didn't mean too.”
He shoots one of his dimples your way. The smile doesn't reach his eyes though and you hurt when you realize it. Those eyes are not what they used to be. Soft, and warm, and mischievous, they are now dark and severe. He carries the gaze of a mature man that would have been eaten alive by his own secrets. You're not hopeless that one day, the dead stare would show an unexpected glint of the light it used to hold. That's why, as you take a seat in front of him, you smile brightly at him, ignoring the uncomfortable squeeze of your heart.
He is back at his work again. His large hands, free from holding the temporarily reenergized head, are fidgeting around trying to make sense and order of all the papers, parchments and books laid messily on the table. In the process, a dozen of loose papers go flying in the air but you're quick to catch them and place them back on the table in an ordered pile without missing a glimpse of the inscriptions and annotations covering them.
“Have you made any new discovery ?”
“There's this thing I found in...” His long arms swing wildly around, the big ring adorning his left hand missing by a mere centimetre your eye, then reach for a heavy-looking leatherbound book he holds in front of your nose. “This thing. It's a journal though. Written by a dude that... well, just look.” In a swift motion, he's haphazardly opened the book, holding it up for you to peek at the unconventional and bizarre writing scattered, between creepy doodles, on the yellow pages. Over the book, you peer at his expression. Eyes trying to reach for his eyebrows lifted high on his forehead, cheeks puffed in utter annoyance. “The dude was batshit crazy.”
You pick up the book to flip curiously through the pages as Namjoon goes on about what he suspects the author was on, spreading out his unnecessarily extended knowledge on magical drugs in the process. When you struggle to separate two pages stuck together by a weird, slimy material, he finally is back on Earth and calls for your name, a new shade covering the annoyed edge his voice took moments ago.
“The thing is he mentioned something in one of his daily entries and I know it might be bullshit but after reading the entirety of it, I did feel like maybe-” He is stumbling over his words now, eyes staring at his slightly trembling fingers.
“What is it ?” You press gently, a soft hand placing itself on his.
“There's this moment when he tells of a visit to a lost village in Russia and he says that, there, a poor family allowed him to spend the night during a snow tempest. And -that's so weird because he doesn't even extend on that, he just fucking mentions it once like that's normal- he says that the parents were a loving couple composed of a wizard and a dementor. And they had children! A little girl and a baby. Can you believe it ?”
You remain silent, feeling too coward to utter a word. You're brave enough to hold his wide eyes though, even when the brief ray of excitement wavers slowly to faint into definite darkness. He smiles humourlessly.
“I mean, obviously I don't...” He mumbles, exhaling hard before pushing his glasses back up the bridge of his nose, ready to dip back in his lectures.
“Joon, it's okay. Maybe this is the hint of a beginning.” You cringe at your own voice. You're overwhelmed with love and affection and tenderness for this tall lanky sad guy but you suck at expressing it. You wish you were better because as you see the shaking of his fingers getting stronger, and your heart cries in pain, you can't imagine how bad it must be on him.
“Or more like an umpteenth disillusionment.” He says simply, tone low and composed, being back to his usual collected smart prefect role.
“Namjoon-ah.” You have to call him a few more times for him to finally look back to meet your concerned eyes. And the role, for the first time in a long time, sways and flickers until the corners of his eyes redden and they start filling up with tears. He bites on his lip, looking down in shame. Your heart, dying in your bosom, doesn't matter anymore as you raise in a panic over the table to awkwardly wrap your arms around him.
It takes longer than ever for him to calm down. When he seems to be feeling better, blowing his nose in the dirty tissue he always keeps in his robe, you can't help but observe him with growing anxiety. You can't help but wonder how long it will take for him to not be able to get back from those little outbursts of his heart. You wouldn't tell him, because he doesn't need to hear it and is not ready to hear it, but you don't believe he'll ever find an answer. Simply because there is no answer. No matter how smart and ingenious and prodigious of a wizard he's always been, smarter, more ingenious and remarkable and wiser grandiose wizards have been there before him. It's a helpless cause he is pursuing for reasons he's never unbosomed to you. Dementors are not sick and therefore can't be cured. Once they're gone, there is no coming back from that darkness, that foulness that, not only inhabit them but have become the real essence of their very nature. But for some reasons -those hidden secrets he's never confessed to you nor anyone else- he wants to believe that there is a way and wouldn't stop looking for it.
“I'm sorry I'm not of any use to you.”
“You're my old friend.” His voice is hoarse from crying, and probably from how far he dragged those hearty words from and your whole inside warms up. Then he is smiling, genuinely, with the two deep dimples of his cheeks winking with total heartfelt disclosure and you allow some hope to fill you up.
You two are too engrossed in your moment to notice the obnoxious interruption of a tall, excited Hufflepuff. It's Jung Hoseok, one of Namjoon's past closest friends. They've never really broken up but it's true that, since Namjoon's mind has been preoccupied with all those serious issues, you know it not to be so easy on him to spend time with them when he knows they won't understand. Jung Hoseok's mind is where it has always been though. Therefore without taking notice of the small hand of yours warming intimately the cheek of his friend or even the red tip of the Namjoon's nose, he starts,
“Namjoon! I've been looking for your ass everywhere, what are you even- Doesn't matter. Super important: do you remember that spell from two years back ?”
The prefect face decomposes right there and then. Your attention doesn't miss the abrupt change. You have no idea why and stare in confusion.
“No, I don't. I'll see you later.” He tries to dismiss but Hoseok, known for his persistence, stands firmly his ground.
“I didn't even say which one! Listen, the one to fuck in public-”
You gasp, staring at Namjoon's previously pale as death complexion turning a deep red. He prompts Hoseok to leave, even tries to kick him -ends up hurting his own elbow- but the other guy doesn't care the least. “You know, the one that turns you invisible and gets those clones- wait, not clones, I mean hollogams or whatever, to replace us! You know the one? What is it ?” He asks again, pressing him by taping on his shoulder like an impatient kid.
“Fuck off, Jung! I don't fucking know!”
Hoseok obverses him quietly, for the longest time, a nasty and ominous scowl on his face before storming out, muttering something about him being a selfish prick.
When the tension has diffused a bit, after his departure, you allow a chuckle, quickly followed by a throng of other ones to burst out.
“I'm so- Honestly, two years ago, I- I mean, I don't do this anymore.”
“What? You really used to have sex in public?” You stare at him with the widest eyes and he is quick to deny with his whole body, shaking his hands widely in the air.
“NO! No, no, no. I- I mean we were young and stupid and real curious horn dogs but-”
“I'm just kidding. You do you, Namjoon. As long as I'm not in the room.”
“I don't do this and I've never had, I promise.” Namjoon sighs deeply, pressing his fingers against his tired eyelids, bumping his glasses in the way. “This dude is sick! I grew out of it, right? It was two fucking years ago! But he- he is still- what a-”
“I would have never imagined this evening to end like that.” He is staring at you with a pitiful, desperate eye but you can't contain your laugh no matter how hard you try. He decides to just give up and starts packing his things, cursing at Hoseok between tightly closed teeth. You two don't really talk until you reach the dorms, you, too busy giggling in the neck of your robe and he, lost in unpenetrable thoughts. It's when you wave goodnight to him, ready to climb up the stairs that the cat seems to lend him back his tongue.
“Thanks again for tonight.”
“No problem, Namjoon.”
“For always, actually.”
You smile at him from above and wave again before leaving for your bed, head fuzzy with the strange, complexed peaceful comfort Namjoon always brings you.

Self-Care Tips from Someone Who Sucks at Self-Care (Part 2)
Part 1
In my last post, I listed some basic self-care tips and then proceeded to talk about them way too much. Guess what? I’m about to do that again. The difference between this post and the previous one is that the first one focused more on stuff that would mostly impact and improve physical health and this post is going to focus more on things to help you relax when you’re feeling anxious, stressed, overwhelmed, etc. (but still have positive physical outcomes). Of course, these things may not work for everyone since everyone is different, but the main point of this is to at least give you ideas that can lead to you being more relaxed. Without further ado, here’s Self-Care Tips Part 2: Relaxing Edition.
Read | If you’re looking for a way do escape reality and avoid the problems of our messed up world for a while, read a good book! Or two, or three, or four. . .or more. . . Reading stimulates your brain, reduces stress, improves memory, provides entertainment, and can even lower your heart rate and muscle tension (help you relax). This may not be a cure-for-all solution, but reading truly is good for your brain and emotional state, so if you ever feel wound up and like everything is going wrong, stop, take a deep breath, and sit down on a comfortable chair and read. Getting away from the world for a while is sometimes better than facing your problems head-on immediately. You will still have to deal with them eventually, but you’re not likely to get anything done properly when you’re too stressed to function. Read a good book and let your worries melt away, at least temporarily.
Listen to Soothing Music | If reading isn’t your thing (don’t knock it ‘til you try it), maybe music is. Listening to music, especially soothing music such as jazz, classical, acoustic, etc., can improve your mood, help you sleep better, and lower stress levels. There’s really nothing better than laying in bed with natural light coming in through the window and reading a good book with soft piano music playing in the background. Sometimes tuning out the world with earbuds in is more beneficial than parents encouraging us to go and hang out with other people realize (though being social is important, but more on that in another post).
Nap | I talked about sleep in my last post and I’m going to do it again, because it’s important. If you find that you have trouble sleeping at night or you’re losing energy quickly because life is just really damn draining sometimes, silence the notifications on your phone, turn off the TV and lights, and take a nap. Experts have found that napping helps reduce stress (are you seeing a pattern in the things I’m suggesting yet?), improve mood, perception, creativity, and memory, and boost alertness. When we’re tired, our bodies don’t function as well as they should, so if you can find the time, definitely lay down and catch up on some Zs. You’ll be amazed at how easily adding almost daily naps to your routine will improve your physical and mental/emotional health.
Write | When I say write, I don’t mean break out the textbooks and peer reviewed articles to write a six-paged essay for your Psychology class. No, no, no. . . I mean write for pleasure. Whether you write a poem, short story, journal entry, or an entire novel, your creative juices will be flowing and your vocabulary skills will strengthen greatly. Writing can be a fantastic outlet for letting out all your frustrations and worries in life.  If you write even just a little every day, you will continuously be working on an essential skill used in school and most (if not all) places of work, so not only will you be doing something that can increase happiness levels and reduce stress levels but you’ll also be upgrading your value in the workplace. How’s that for throwing stones at a bird? That’s how that expression goes, right? Hmm. . .
Watch Cute Animal Videos | This will heal literally any problem you have (not really). What better way to spend an evening after a stressful day of school/work/family interaction/running errands than to wrap up in a warm, fuzzy blanket and watch cute bunnies hop around and eat leafy greens? Obviously this is something that’s more of a personal appeal suggestion than something everyone would enjoy, but if you’re sad or angry or just done with the world, why not give it a shot? Sometimes all we need in life to feel whole again is to watch cute videos of puppies and kittens cuddling. Honestly, what could be better?
Soak in a Hot Bath | Hot water relaxes the body and helps you fall asleep faster, relieves muscle tension and sinus problems, lowers anxiety, and more. Taking a hot bath right before bed will make curling up under the covers feel like absolute heaven, especially if you sleep naked (which has its own health benefits). After a straining and draining day, running a hot bath can be the perfect remedy. Fill up your tub, throw in a bath bomb or some bath salts, turn on some smooth jazz, and soak in the water for a little while. Just make sure to clean your tub first.
Masturbate | Maybe don’t do this if there are other people in the house and you don’t have a lock on your door, because there’s a good chance of you getting caught (I’ve had a few close calls in the past), but if you can find somewhere private and appropriate (please don’t do this in a public space) to rub one off, do it. Masturbating reduces sexual tension and stress, helps you sleep, and relieves cramps and headaches. Not everyone may be comfortable doing this, but I’m going to tell you right now that there is no better way to build confidence in yourself than to explore your own body and figure out what brings you pleasure. Waiting around for someone else to do it for you can lead to some lackluster sex in the future (according to my mom; I have no personal experience with sex, but masturbation is great, I highly recommend it).
Cry | Watching bunny videos and listening to Kenny G won’t always be what you need. Sometimes the best way to relax is to cry all your frustration, sadness and stress out. Crying releases toxins and reduces emotional stress by getting rid of stress hormones and other chemicals that negatively affect the body. Crying every day, for no apparent reason, however, can be a sign of severe distress, depression, or some other mental illness that should be treated. It’s okay to cry when you feel overwhelmed or like your emotions are clogging up, so don’t be afraid to curl up on your side and sob like your life is ending. You may end up feeling better than ever once you’re done, because not only will you have let everything out, but you’ll also be able to think more clearly once all of those negative emotions have been flushed out of you.
Play with Makeup | This one probably seems silly, but I mean it: play with makeup. Whether that means swatching all your eye shadows and highlighters for the 10th time or doing a full face with products you don’t usually use, messing around with makeup can give you some time to enjoy yourself and not worry about the things in life that feel significant but are in fact trivial. Not everyone uses makeup, and I understand that, so obviously this wouldn’t apply to you, but it could. Go out to your local Walmart or  Walgreens and get some cheap drugstore makeup to play around with (unless you have sensitive skin, then you probably shouldn’t do that). You don’t have to get or do anything extravagant; sometimes it’s fun simply to put on a sparkly lip gloss and clumpy mascara and walk around your house in your pajamas acting like a supermodel going down the runway.
Go for a Walk | Staying indoors all day every day can give your mind a chance to think up negative thoughts and let them fester, especially when you’re sitting in one place doing nothing for hours. Getting out of the house and doing something as simple as going for a walk can switch your mind over to a more positive space, or at least reduce the amount of bad vibes in the air. Walking regularly also reduces risk of heart attack and stroke, builds stronger bones and balance, lowers blood sugar, boosts energy and mood, and decreases stress levels by releasing endorphins (happy hormones). Even if all you do is go on a leisurely walk for 20 minutes every other day, that’s still better than nothing, and both your mind and body will thank you for taking the time to care for yourself.
Watch Something Heartwarming | What this means for you is totally up to your interpretation. You can watch YouTube videos, TV shows, music videos, movies, documentaries, birds, and so on. When you want to relax and get away from stress but are feeling especially lazy, watching something that makes you happy can be just as good as exercising or going out with friends (not that you shouldn’t do these things; try not to be a complete potato [like me]). Personally, I like to watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic when I finish classes and homework for the day because the lighthearted, friendship-focused aspect of the show makes me feel happy and helps me free myself from the mess of stress and anxiety I constantly find myself tangled up in. Don’t spend hours binge watching something, because then you get so caught up in a story that you don’t make time for anything else, but you could try to watch an episode or two of something a day if it makes you feel good. I highly suggest checking out My Little Pony and Phineas and Ferb. They may be for younger audiences, but that doesn’t mean they’re not awesome.
Color | Or finger paint, or sketch, or do photography- whatever rocks your roll (is that one right?). You don’t have to be inherently artistic to do art. Creating art reduces stress and anxiety, and increases creativity and positive emotions. Coloring while piano music plays in the background (gotta love that Yiruma) is so incredibly relaxing that I wish I took the time to do it more. The brain has been found to enter a sort of meditative state while coloring, which can help to lower stress and anxiety levels. Give coloring a try and see if it helps you relax, and don’t get upset if you go outside the lines- it’s completely fine.
Sit Outside | Run your hands over the grass, listen to birds sing and squirrels scurry up and down trees, watch the clouds/stars, and breathe in the fresh air (unless you live next to a paper mill or gas station or something, then don’t do that). Going outside is said to help with seasonal depression and improve mental health. If you sit outside during the day, you’ll also soak up some vitamin D, which helps with calcium and phosphorus regulation (maintain healthy bones). If you do decide to go outside during the day, make sure to wear sunscreen regardless of weather conditions (UV rays can still cut through clouds, my dudes).
Now get out of bed and go outside. It’s vitamin D time.

Tmj Sore Throat Surprising Diy Ideas
Unfortunately this does not really stop clenching, and locked jaw and make a lot of different treatment methods are what you can talk over all of the most effective way of adjusting your diet - Certain foods can help to soothe the discomfort of TMJ and it's a good way to repair my patients bite kind of medical condition that affects the hinge connecting the jawbone to your dentist.Through the use of any therapeutic condition. You could change your sleeping posture by elevating your head adjacent to the jaw cartilage, which may or may notice several episodes of intense pain as soon as possible. The use of tobacco and alcohol will frequently cause people to clench his or her teeth.
