Talk shop Tuesday: how many and which fics do have planned or have started writing? Talk about them. 🤭

Omg you brat 🙈💗

So I am, of course, insane, and have a Google Doc to keep myself organized (suddenly wondering why I didn't make a Google Sheet... a change may be in order!)

Anyway, so I have "in-progress," "ideas," "abandoned?" and "completed" lists (and then I link to each of the docs within the doc, because I like organization, okay?). I also have a list of lyrics/title ideas and "homeless pieces of writing" (where I copy and paste things that didn't quite fit into a particular fic) in here as well. It's like my own little master list.

Still along for the insanity ride? I swear there's a method to my madness.

I consider a fic in-progress if I've actually started writing it (as in, I have written actual sentences/paragraphs for it, not just jotted down a few bullet points), so here is that list:

6x06 post-ep fic (Tim's Version - hope to have this done in the next few days, if the muse cooperates)

a very (very) bare bones start to a car accident angst-fest

a beachy AU that may and may not happen

an outsider POV fic I started during Chenford Week last year and am on the fence on finishing (it's sooooo random and and feels kind of pointless, but I love outsider POV fics)

a continuation of our 5x08 spec fic collab (because girl, we cannot leave it like that)

On the ideas front (this includes both ideas with tons of notes/plans, and ones with two bullet points and a prayer):

a smutty reunion of sorts...

a sort of enemies-to-lovers AU (Lucy is either a reporter or a screenwriter... or both?, Tim is a cop)

a what-if sort of scenario - what if Lucy and Emmett dated longer (or got back together) - aka how Tim realizes he's in love with her and makes his move

Contractor Tim AU (iykyk - this is basically born out of my desire to not waste the 10K+ words I started for Linstead - we shall see if I'm able to reimagine it for Chenford)

a collab with you that I think would be so much fun (the experience and the actual fic itself), so I really hope we can make that happen together

a Wildest Dreams-inspired collab with @makeitastrength that'll hopefully be a hiatus project

a little thing that's basically me bashing the go-to jealousy trope and coming at it from a totally different (fluffy) angle

an inkling of an idea to go back and dive deeper into various conversations between Tim and Angela over the years (including scenes we saw on the show and scenes we didn't)

And, for fun, a list of ideas I've abandoned (maybe temporarily, maybe forever):

a heartbreaker where Kojo dies - but also included a trip down memory lane at some moments in his/their life so it wasn't pure sadness (full disclosure, this was basically my personal therapy after my dog died a few weeks ago. I am so sorry Kojo, I promise I'm your number one cheerleader)

a fun group/couples game night (the result of me misreading a prompt that said "it's a fight, couples fight" and then the idea of the couples battling it out took over my mind... 😅)

I feel like I'm missing a few more, but this is already the longest, most insane response ever... and if you made it to the end? Congratulations/I'm sorry.

3. How would you describe your writing style?

I have no idea. You do it for me.

13. Rate your worldbuilding skills from 1 to 10.

I'd say I'm better at emotions and moments than I am at actual world building, because that's so much work. So I'll say... 4.

23. Dialogue or description? Why is the other one so hard?

Dialogue! I don't know! I mean it helps when setting the mood, but sometimes I'm just like... who's gonna read two pages of some purple prose. But then, as a reader, I do. So. Go figure.

30. Describe a fic that almost happened, but then it didn't.

I had this amazing Chenford AU planned, with Lucy inheriting a ranch in Montana and Tim being a caretaker for the horses and they've had like a whole thing going from when they were young, but I just lost motivation for it.

31. What was the most difficult fic for you to write (but in the end you made it)?

Most difficult was Gone that I wrote for Linstead, because it dealt with such heavy topics, and I was dealing with some pretty raw emotions of my own, so yeah. But I finished it!

32. Do you have a word/expression that you always use in your writing?

Murmur is one I use a lot. I just love how soft it is.

33. Give your writing a compliment.

I HATE YOU SARAH MIDDLE NAME LAST NAME

My writing is fantastic, it's like so amazing it attracted some weird woman on the internet, who started talking to me about it and we've been friends ever since, so, I'd say it's pretty damn awesome (does it count if I don't actually mean it?). 😅

And since you wanted it twice, I like my dialogue okay, I feel it often feels very in character, and I am often proud of how it comes out. That's two for two. Thank you so much for this insightful question I totally didn't have any problems answering.

34. Do you write to improve? Or is that not a concern for you?

I do! I love learning new things. Sadly I often get stuck on like repetitive words and so on, and that makes me feel like I haven't advanced at all. Thank god for my trusty beta.

35. Thoughts on writing challenges/contests.

I think in a right environment they can be very motivating!

36. How do you come up with fic titles? What's the one you're most proud of?

Haha Taylor Swift songs. I love the 'i hate accidents (except when we went from friends to this)' for the fic where Lucy accidentally sends Tim her erotic photoshoot results. I think it's so fun and fits the story well.

37. Do you research before writing or while you write? Is it fun or boring for you?

I usually do it while I write. And it's so fun, I sometimes forget to get back to writing. I'm a researcher at heart.

38. "This never happened" fix-it fics or "this happened but" fix-it fics?

Both. I am a fixer. I will fix whatever needs to be fixed, and I will fix things that maybe don't even need to be fixed.

39. Wildest AU scenario you have written?

I'll go with my Linstead professor/student AU. Hehe.

Ok, so I'm new to your blog! (Sorry abt that) but I'm super interested in the super soldier and pirate au's. I tried searching your blog for more info but as we know Tumblr search is terrible, can you point me to more posts on the topic or tell me some stuff about them?

I do have a specific question about the super soldier AU; what super abilities are we talking about aside from enhanced strength?

As for pirate Au (which I am just as excited for) is this based on any source material or is it entirely your worldbuilding? I'd love to know more!

Hi, nonny! Welcome to the chaos! I know I gained a lot of followers during the first run of the firefighter bracket, to welcome to all of you! And you definitely don't have to apologize for being new here, especially for One Chicago things - I'm still kinda new here.

I did give both Super Soldier AU and Pirate AU tags on this blog in an attempt to keep things organized, but you're absolutely right. Tumblr search is a whole mess sometimes. But! Pirate AUs have a masterpost here, with a link to the tag in it, and the Super Soldier AU posts can all be found in its tag here, though it has significantly less content to peruse for that one than Pirate AU (to be fair to me, I actually have plans to write Pirate AU this year, whereas Super Soldier AU is just something I think about from time to time with no solid plans to actually write it)

As for your specific questions...

Super Soldier AU

I was literally joking last night (and this morning) that the experiments kind of just... gave Mouse more autism? Yes, obviously, there's the cliché super strength, and heightened senses, but that makes his life so hard when he already got overstimulated and overwhelmed by too much noise or a stressful day to begin with.

They also kind of reverted his brain to a few base instincts? When he's living his every day life back in Chicago again, it doesn't show, but that's because everything is triggered by stress or certain situations. Mouse was, for lack of a better word, programmed to take out threats - usually, he's explicitly told what those threats are, for the missions he went on for the army, but without that guidance, and specifically without a proper handler, it becomes this vague order that he doesn't know how to handle and process all the time.

It's what led to him doing his single handed rescue of Jay in the situation outlined in the moodboard. He saw his friend in danger, perceived a threat, and took it out, like he was programmed to do. When he's not in a war zone, it just turns into protecting his friends instead of following orders.

Pirate AU

This AU happened because I saw a picture of Sam from a short film he did ~11 years ago, where he's holding a sword? I thought it was hot, so I built an AU around it. In my defense...

He should be allowed to hold a sword more often (yes, I watched the short film and made gifs they're very important to me they get me through rough weeks)

I kind of built the idea of Mouse as a pirate around that image, and then engagement-of-convenience Linstead happened off to the side of him, and the plot fell into place after that. And then I listened to a lot of The Amazing Devil and it's a whole world now. I don't think about Pirate AU enough considering I'm supposed to be writing it this year...

I know I haven't shared much about either of these AUs by way of like... the actually plot of Pirate AU, or any of my world building for Super Soldier Mouse, so if you have any more questions that I haven't answered yet, feel free to ask them! I love talking about these little universes! Thank you for giving me the opportunity today!

GLIMPSE OF US ? BETTY ??

YUP YUP YUP!!!

Glimpse of us is a japril fic - it will be set post-divorce and focuses on jackson and April learning to move on from one another.

Betty will be a teen AU written for both japril and linstead.

the betty fic is still mostly written in notes, but I do have glimpse of us partially written so here’s a sneak peek of that one :)

April, even in her flawed nature, was perfect to me. From the moment our relationship changed, I had known that, no matter what, she was perfect for me; that what we had was perfect. But maybe it wasn’t - if we were so perfect together, it would’ve worked; we would’ve overcome every obstacle that came our way, but we couldn’t; perfection didn’t mean anything when you were faced with the type of devastation that comes from losing a child. April and I weren’t as perfect as I thought - we no longer worked. Whose fault that was, I honestly couldn’t be sure of anymore.

I blamed April for everything that went wrong in our marriage after Samuel’s death. I was angry with her for leaving, and maybe that was fair, to an extent; the first time I understood, she needed to be away from everything that reminded her of Samuel, of what we’d lost, me included; I thought it would be fine, that we could heal and move forward, that she would be back soon; as much as it pained me to be half a world away from her, I could get over it. But the second time just felt … insurmountable. I think part of me was jealous; April seemed to be doing better, she seemed happier, she found something that helped her cope and process her grief; and I just felt stuck. A selfish part of me wanted her to still be broken, so that we could be broken together; so that we could, maybe, put each other back together.

But we might have been okay if I hadn’t given her that ultimatum. Maybe, If I hadn’t iced her out the way I did before she left again, if I had talked it through with her, explained why I needed her to stay, if she’d told me more about why she needed to go; maybe we would’ve found a way to compromise. Maybe she would’ve stayed, or she might’ve still left, but maybe the outcome awaiting us when she got home would have changed. Maybe she would’ve stayed here with me and found a way to help like she had been doing in Jordan, or maybe I would’ve been on the plane to Jordan with her, or maybe I would’ve been waiting at the airport to pick her up when she got back again; maybe we would still be in our home - together.

I'd love to think about how something like the could have happened or even read an AU about it; but I'm also kind of glad nothing happened in s21 (or at least early s21) because Amanda still wasn't ready

I think it's time I ended my hiatus...

For those who care, I'm coming back! It's been an interesting few months while I've been gone and many times I have thought of shutting it all down and moving on with my life.

However, as time went on, I realized that I would miss this place, especially all the Linstead gifs and writing--including my own.

For those who do not know me, I aspire to one day work as a first responder. Knowing the stress that this could bring on, I realized that I could probably never give up this website or writing Linstead fics. It's one of my few sources of happiness. Obviously they're unfortunately not canon anymore but that doesn't mean we have to let them die.

That being said, I will regrettably be sending out fic updates on some WIP to abandon them to focus on new projects. I have plans to finish a couple WIPs so fear not if one of them is your favourite. I do ask for your patience though as I go through my work.

I'll be navigating a new time in my life for the next few months so I likely won't post as often as I used to here.

Lastly, I'd just like to say thank you for those who have interacted with me and became my friends over the last few years. It was a very lonely and dark part of my life but this website was always a bright portion of my day. I cannot repay this debt in any way; you have no idea what those engagements meant to me.

Anyway, send me fic prompts via my anon! I'm looking to get the juices flowing again!

Anything with a 1 for the fic game!

1. What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?) Oh goddddd what a struggle? I asked @timandlucy to answer this for me, and she said this one (which is, oddly enough, one of my favourite things I've written - it was a fun challenge!) or this one (her Secret Santa gift, so she may be biased there...)

10. How do you decide what to write? If something keeps me up at night, I know I need to write it out of pure spite. Seriously though, if I wake up at 3am thinking about an idea, that alone tells me it's compelling enough and/or excites me enough that I need to follow through with it.

11. Are you partial to a certain character/pairing or are you more equal-opportunity? If you are partial to any character/pairing, why do you think that is? All Chenford, all the time! I absolutely love both Tim and Lucy, and I have so much fun exploring these two characters. But I think if I had to chose, I'd say Tim, purely because (at least generally speaking) he holds his cards closer to the chest than Lucy, so there can be more to play with there.

12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you? Hmm, I don't think so? I'm generally pretty open-minded, but once something's on my shit list, it's usually there to stay!

13. Are there any tropes you used to like but don’t anymore? Again, not really? I'm pretty stubborn strong in my opinions!

14. Are there any tropes you would only read if written by a trusted friend or writer? While I can't think of any specific examples at the moment, I definitely think there are lot of sensitive topics thrown around in fanfic that would be better left to someone with greater respect for them. If that makes sense? Writing from a place of care (whether that's pulling from your own experience or from research to develop better understand) is super important to me!

15. What’s your favorite AU that you’ve written? Well thus far, I've only written one, for Linstead. But I have a handful of Chenford ideas bouncing around in my brain! Fingers crossed I can make at least one or two of them happen over summer hiatus!

16. What’s an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)? One that I've read and loved? Hello, Chenford married at first sight, aka the AU I never knew I needed! (@cfr749 💖)

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it? @timandlucy, you wanna field this one??? 👀😂

18. If you wrote a sequel to i've got my love to keep me warm, what would it involve? I'm not sure if you had a particular fic in mind here? But in general, I'm not sure I've ever envisioned a sequel to anything I've written, simply because most of my fics lean heavily on the "canon compliant" side of things, so I expect canon to give me the next parts hahaha. But there was a time I thought about writing a part two to this one! And, you know, never say never?

Hmm, interesting!! I suppose this fic technically has the most potential for a sequel - the future anniversaries they hint at at the end. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm 🤔

19. If you wrote a spin-off of you know what it was (he is in love), what would it involve? Well given that this is the shortest fic ever, I guess there's potential to explore so many things in more depth. But technically I guess that's not a spin-off. Something similar from Tim's POV I suppose, but the "show you" line was more fitting for Lucy thinking about Tim than the other way around.

21. If you wrote a “missing scene” in i can go anywhere i want (just not home), what would it be? I actually went back to my doc for this one, because funnily enough, there are some things I eliminated for this. Here's a chunk that I ended up not using:

It feels easy at first. As Nova, she’s nervous, more so than she ever cares to let on. It’s her first job, and while she feels a rush at the excitement of it all, she can’t deny that it’s scary. So much is riding on the op—for the department, certainly, but also for herself. It’s her shot to prove herself, to show Harper, Grey, Tim, and everyone else what she’s capable of. But when all is said and done, it’s a relatively short job, and the newness of it all makes the time pass quickly. She doesn’t feel the nerves as much as Sava. Or maybe she’s just too focused on a different kind of nerves, what with being in such close proximity to Tim and feeling so many things. Being Sava feels easy and almost natural in a way Lucy doesn’t let herself think too much about, but that she knows is because she has Tim by her side. Sure, the op is intense, but the chance to take down Madras is more important than any of the turmoil she feels inside. And in the blink of an eye, it’s over, and there’s so much going on that she doesn’t really have time to dwell on the job. When Lucy goes under as Jamie Hall, she feels a surprising sense of peace. Perhaps because she’s been through it before, so she knows the ropes. But probably more because she has Tim as her backup. She’s still surprised the department signed off on that, but she’s grateful for the added level of protection it affords her. She’s able to really give in to the case, lean into the rush, because just knowing he’s close keeps the nerves and the isolation at bay. So she’s expecting more of the same this time.

31. What’s your ideal fic length to write? Whatever feels right. As much as I fixate on the word count as I write, I try not to let it control when something is done. If it feels complete at 1000 words, so be it!

41. Link a fic that made you think, “Wow, I want to write like that.” This fic feels like an extension of canon in such an incredible way that I feel it should be compulsory reading (@makeitastrength 👏)

Fluff, Smut, Emotional hurt/Comfort, Fluff and Smut, Established Relationship.

I'd say that's very accurate, yes. 😂

12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?

The soulmate trope, I guess? I read one that kind of changed my mind about it.

13. Are there any tropes you used to like but don’t anymore?

I think that's more of an age thing, but I like teen AUs a lot less than I used to. I mean I even wrote one for Linstead, but I don't see myself reading or writing any.

26. Would you rather write a fic that had no dialogue or one that was only dialogue?

Oh damn that's hard. Even though I love dialogue, I'd have to say no dialogue, because you can speak with actions as well as with words. While where there is only dialogue without any tags, how the words were spoken and so on, you don't really have much.

38. Did any of your fics get surprisingly popular (whatever that means to you)? Which ones? Why do you think they were so successful?

Not really... All my fics get around the same amount of kudos and comments, I wouldn't say one is a lot more successful than all the others.

40. Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?

I do re-read! I absolutely haven't had enough time but I'm dying to go re-read some of my faves.

44. If you take/write prompts: do you prefer dialogue or scenario/narrative prompts?

I do take prompts! I just make no promises about them 🙈 I prefer scenario/narrative prompts but sometimes a dialogue one can be nice because you can take it in so many different directions!

49. What are you currently working on? Share a few lines if you’re up for it!

You know very well everything I'm working on 😂 Here's an excerpt from my sugar daddy wip that I might or might not one day finish. (I hope sugar daddy isn't next roommates Sarah)

“Lucy.”

She looks at him, cheeks flushed and head spinning.

“Breathe.”

She chuckles and nods. “I’m sorry. I ramble when I’m nervous. And that last coffee I had might have been overkill.”

“It’s okay. All you need to do is take my arm, smile at people. Maybe have a dance with me. Keep the rambling to a minimum while we're there. I happen to quite enjoy it, but the people at the party might take offence if you call anyone bald and fat. Then I’ll take you home.”
