The lilac-breasted roller is a small, beautiful bird which is fairly common in Southern and Eastern Africa. It is Kenya's national bird.
The bird is even more colorful in flight, but I wasn't quick enough to get a clear photo then.
Masai Mara, Kenya, July 2023.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Ravens are somewhat famous for their aerial acrobatics, but they’re not the only ones that can fly fancy. An entire group of birds are known as rollers due to the feats some of them perform as part of courtship rituals or while defending their nests.

(Video: A silhouette of a lilac-breasted roller from a distance, wheeling overhead before performing two nose-dives in quick succession, not unlike a loop-de-loop
Transcript: (A man narrates) Is he watching him there? Making a screeching noise, definetly...not a pretty sound, when you look up how pretty the bird is. Now what he’s doing is-- there he goes, there he goes. There we go! And he goes again. And that is is why we call that bird a roller! Well done Mr. Andrew!
Mr. Andrew: Yay! Got that done.
Narrator:Alrighty, well done andy.)

Animal of the Day!
Lilac-Breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Africa
Size (Weight/Length)- 35 cm
Diet- Insects; Lizards
Cool Facts- Lilac-breasted rollers are well known for their brilliant coloration found on both sexes. These rollers mate for life and are solitary nesters. They are highly territorial against other rollers and possible predators. Using their bright colors, the pair will fly at the predator to distract them from the nest. During the mating season, lilac-breasted rollers will perform complex mating flights in which they dive and fly in sync. Insects are favored by these birds, often times following small herds of antelope to catch insects that are kicked up.
Rating- 13/10 (Brilliant blue bugeaters badger bigger birds.)

So many of the photos of this bird on here look as though the saturation slider has been slid all the way to the right so that they look neon. They're still beautiful birds in their natural colours; I believe these are more accurate.
