Daniel Law thoughts and observations.  Why is his last name so bloody difficult to figure out?
This is a quick and frivolous post as opposed to my normally long form ones.  I’ve got it hard for Daniel at the moment; I’m wade through the vast expanse that is the internet looking for merch for him.  Steven merch is like shooting fish in a barrel with how popular he is.  K.K. merch is also easy and super cheap second hand.  But Daniel merch.  Hoooo boy, it takes some time and effort to find.
The first issue around him is his bloody last name.  Which Japanese isn’t equipped to deal with.  This shows in my merch quest as I’ve scrolled through pages and pages of items.  But first:
The Darkhorse translation calls him Daniel Low.
Tumblr media
The Funimation translation settles on Daniel Law.
Tumblr media
When you listen to the sub and the dub, both the Japanese VA and English VA both clearly say “Law”.  I’d like to also note that the Japanese VA for Steven, Mitsuru Miyamoto, has really good pronunciation for all of the English terms/names he says specifically which makes me really think “Law” is the intended spelling.   The credits also reflect this.
Tumblr media
Both versions also settle on the title of Lieutenant.  While the literal translation is Assistant Inspector (keibuho - 警部補).  I’m not sure why they didn’t go with Detective which sounds like the most American term and Inspector being British.  I guess Detective is a role while, Daniel would still have a police rank associated with him. But I know squat about American policing terms and job titles.  Maybe, I should go back and watch some Law and Order and cringe?
Where is this total weirdness around Daniel’s name coming from?  Especially if we get a season three and Marcus also shows up for the Calamity Auction arc.
Now, we all know that having an equal transfer of Law into Japanese can’t happen since there is no way to make say a “La-wa” etc.  The best you can get is to drop down in the r-line to the “ro” combo.  But then you’ve got that pesky “w” you need to do something with.
If you wanted “Low” this would be the easiest way to get it.  Go with “ro” and add the long vowel dash making it “ro-oh”
Tumblr media
But we can see this reading of “ro” with a long “o” can be [sighs] Rho, Lau; Low, Loo, Rau, Raux, Roe or Roh.
Okay, this isn’t what happens in the credits.  The Japanese credits write his name out this way.  “ro” with the “u”.  Now, the first hit is “Law”.  Yay!
Tumblr media
But then we get also; Loew, Low, Lowe or even Rowe!  Argh!
So, how does this tie into merch?  Well, how his name is spelled on KKSS merch of course and how to search for it!
For Back 2 Back full color acrylics that were Jump (Festa Specials I’d guess), we get him and Marcus being referred to as Lowe.  ‘Cause they are twin brothers and Daniel is the older one! Another issue with Japanese language mechanics versus English but that’s for another time.  I’d read Daniel to be several years older since he’s referred to as “older brother” in B2B but since you have to place your sibling in age relative to you - Marcus has to say older brother in the original Japanese.
Tumblr media
There is also a small special badge set with Steven and Daniel here, where he is also referred to as “Lowe”.  Did I impulsively buy this?  Yes, yes I did of course!
Tumblr media
Yet when we look at other items music/band themed (acoustic guitar) , the American heroes (fighter pilot? why?), ice skating, saloon barkeep/western. he’s got a last name of “Low”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You might begin to think - okay, it is clear that 1.) there is no official spelling of his name down on paper.  2.) merch designers see ロウ and make an educated guess 3.) his name can’t be “Law”.
Buuutttt let’s go to the actual search function of a Japanese site like Goods Republic.  And what do we find in the character list on the left hand side?  Daniel Law.
Tumblr media
Additionally,  you go on Zen Market and access JP Mercari directly, searching with the terms of ダニエル and 血界戦線.  You will get merch that not only pulls up Daniel but all the translated descriptions will always refer to him as Daniel Law.
What have I learned from this?  That until we get season three and Daniel gets a floating info box like below, we will never truly know how his name is spelled.  However, with the sense of humor that Nightow has and his wordplay in English, I really still think the original intent is “Law” because he’s a fucking cop.  Come on, easiest cheese joke ever.
Tumblr media
And if he doesn’t get a floating info box in a season three, it means they aren’t giving him full justice due to his increasing role in the series.

scummy man || ✮⋆˙ .
Tumblr media
“Cause he’s a scumbag, don’t you know?
I said he’s a scumbag, don’t you know?”
────────── ★ ───────────
The moment Daniel Kaffee walked into your office with his stupid apple and his stupid, childish ‘hi’, you knew you were fucked from top to bottom. Of course, they hadn’t taken you seriously when you petitioned Division to have counsel assigned. They brought you the first idiot they came across.
You’d written a seventeen page memo to Bronsky outlining the situation, you’d pleaded your case for a half hour in his living room on a Sunday afternoon, and Division assigned a Lt. Junior Grade? They had too be kidding (or hate you).
You’d managed to scare him, at least, and that you were proud of. He seemed like the type, who was particularly full of himself, which was proven as quite the right accusation, after a few minutes of speaking with him. He was just a bunch of royal bullshit, you’d decided — fucking wanted him off the case, even though he hadn’t even started yet.
He was never going to take it seriously, judging on how loose and cool he acted. For crying out loud, Dawson and Downey were at his sake, while Daniel could not care less about them, opting to practice baseball instead, because he claimed he had a critical game coming. Was that guy serious?
“Lieutenant, would you feel very insulted if I recommended to your supervisor that he assign different counsel?” you threatened, face burning as you struggled to contain your anger at his complete indifference to the situation.
“Why would you do that?”
He had the nerve to ask. “You’re not fit to handle the defense. One second more with you and the marines will have sealed their poor fate.”
Daniel nodded, unimpressed with your tone.
“You don’t even know me. Ordinarily, it takes someone hours to discover I’m not fit to handle a defense. You’ve known me for less than ten minutes.” He walked away from you, as if your threat was a joke to him, like he didn’t believe you.
You stupidly stared at him, blood boiling as you wondered how impossibly scummy one could be.
“I do know you. Daniel Allistair Kaffee, born June 8th, 1964 at Boston Mercy Hospital. Your father's Lionel Kaffee, former Navy Judge Advocate and Attorney General, of the United States, died 1985. You went to Harvard Law on a Navy scholarship, probably because that’s what your father wanted you to do, and now you’re just treading water for the three years you’ve gotta serve in the JAG Corps, just kinda laying low til you can get out and get a real job. And if that’s the situation, that’s fine, I won’t tell anyone. But my feeling is that if this case is handled in the same fast-food, slick-ass, Persian Bazaar manner with which you seem to handle everything else, something’s gonna get missed. And I’d be damned if I allowed Dawson and Downey to spend any more time in prison than absolutely necessary, because their attorney had pre-determined the path of least resistance,” your monologue prevented you from taking a breath, confidently crossing your arms like you’d just won an argument, as Daniel took a quick sip from his Yoo-Hoo, staring intently at you. The sun was hitting his face and if you allowed it to yourself, you could’ve observed how stunningly green his eyes were.
“Wow,” he admired, very taken aback. “I’m sexually aroused, Commander. I may be picking the wrong time to ask you this, but are you seeing anyone right now? ‘Cause I think you and I would be perfect together. It’s clear that you respect me and that’s the foundation for any solid—”
“Shut up.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
You let out an angry exhale and grabbed him by the collar of his thin baseball shirt, pulling him towards you. He gasped in surprise, breath caught in his throat as you stabbed your finger into his chest as a warning.
“Listen there, Kaffee, I will have you removed from the case, so don’t go around being cute and unbothered. Mark my words, you just waisted your last chance with me.”
And with that, you threw him back to the bleachers, storming away in annoyance and over the top frustration. Never had another human being ever crawled up under your nerves so quickly, it had to be an astonishing world record.
When you walked into your office the next day just to find Daniel sitting on your chair already, you neared the dreadful experience of going into cardiac arrest. You silently wondered how he’d managed to sneak in, but decided to ignore him.
“You didn’t do it.”
His words were softly spoken, causing you to look at him, undoubtedly baffled. “I beg your pardon?”
“You didn’t do it,” he repeated with more emphasis, as if that would help you understand what he was referring to. “I thought you really wanted me out of the case, so I went to check, see if you talked to my supervisor. You didn’t.”
Oh, so he was talking about that. You played it off as something frankly unimportant, not even bothering to reply anything to him. If you turned your back around just for one second, you could’ve seen exactly how distressed he was.
Daniel got up from your chair, walking up behind you as he towered over you, hands unexpectedly nervous, seeing as they couldn’t stay still for a full minute on the waistline of his uniform trousers. You chuckled silently to yourself, nose scrunching in pride as you turned your back, looking dead into his eyes, your own ones fixed on the way his Adam’s apple moved in his neck as he gulped.
“Good job, Lieutenant. I see you took my words seriously for once. Need to keep into mind that you shit your pants way too easily, threats have you following every order you’ve been given.”
Daniel’s eyes were blown with disbelief of your manners, brows raised in offense. There was no doubt that you were prepared to make his life a living hell, had every intention to cause this case to be his first and last one, because the way it was going, he’d either rip apart his diploma or plain out kill himself. And who had the delightful opportunity to hear Daniel complain day and night? None other than Sam.
“She hates me, I don’t even know why,” he cried while pacing back and forth in his small living room, bat placed over his shoulders as he rested his hands on it, mind far away from the case. Sam sighed, sinking back into the couch. “She barely even knows me! I always do stuff wrong for her, she’s never satisfied. Little miss perfect,” he continued without a break, swinging the bat now as he ignored the board that stood in the middle of the place. Sam felt nauseous, having baring his unstoppable yapping for what felt like decades, even though it’d only been less than ten minutes.
A knock on the door pulled him out of his unlimited boredom and he got up to see who it was, ignoring the way Daniel kept going on and on. He looked over the eye on the door, almost letting out an audible groan at the fact that it was you who had knocked, meaning that your appearance would drive his friend even crazier.
“Come in,” he whispered lowly to you as he unlocked the door and let you in. You shrugged your jacket off your shoulders, noticing that Daniel hadn’t even acknowledged the fact that someone else had gotten into his house. “Damn, I’ve never seen him like this before. Normally he loses interest in a girl after a date or two…” he commented with a smirk, but you ignored him.
“You know, I wish she could’ve taken me out of the case, so that I wouldn’t have to see her face again,” Daniel admitted frustratedly, stopping dead in his tracks momentarily as he laid his eyes on you. Suddenly, hitting his head as hard as possible with his bat didn’t seem like such a terrible idea. Oh, he was fucked to the core.
A smug, proud smile spread across your lips.
“Talking about me, Lieutenant Kaffee?” you rhetorically asked, crossing your arms and puffing your chest out arrogantly as you strode confidently across the room to get to him.
Daniel pretended to turn a deaf ear to your question, head strictly observing the case’s board as he gripped on the hand of his baseball bat. He wished the earth would open up and swallow him out of existence, his brain bleeding at the pure satisfaction he’d so universally given you by admitting the very phrase that you’d been accusing him of; dropping the case, because he couldn’t take the seriousness of it. And oh, well, because he couldn’t bare another second with you breathing down his neck and constantly criticizing him without even caring enough to get to know him — not as Daniel Kaffee, but Marine Lieutenant Kaffee. You had no idea of his potential, yet you still found it in you to look down at him, underestimate and humiliate him.
Sam incredulously just existed there, not taking any stance against either one of you. He’d been friends with Daniel since ages, which cast him to be very close to his way of thinking, and he knew for an undeniable fact that his friend was building up a brick wall of denial, hatred and irony just because he wouldn’t want to face the reality of the situation that pained his mind.
Daniel was captivated by you, Sam claimed.
He silently watched the way his eyes never left your face the entire time you spent in the small apartment, while working on the case, the split second that Daniel subconsciously let his jaw slightly hang open when you determinedly explained every detail of how to teach the marines how to act in the courtroom. Of course, Daniel was going through a matter of confusion.
You stood an obstacle to his limitless confidence and that wasn’t something he particularly wanted to experience every passing day, thus why he’d convinced himself that he hated you. But that was simply not true, at least according to Sam’s observations, which always proved to be right.
“I hate her,” he’d say all the time, but even the sound of his voice gave away the fact that he didn’t. How could he, anyway? Despite the hard time you were giving him, you actually worked by his side, boosting him even more. Come on — he was going to be in a courtroom — he’d never been in one before. All because of how stubborn you were with this case. Daniel loved it.
“Nobody likes her very much,” he’d said in Cuba, shouting his statement loudly enough for all the people in the convertible to hear despite the dizzying noise of shots and fighter planes. You’d rolled your eyes, opting not to give him the chance to stupidly smirk at himself for managing to piss you off (that was exactly his only goal).
───
Predictably enough, Daniel was laying down on his couch as a baseball game faintly played in the background, preventing him from concentrating. Truth be told, his mind was blank. He’d prepared himself mentally for what was coming; they’d lose the trial, make complete fools of themselves in front of an entire courtroom. His father was shaking his head disappointedly at him, Daniel knew it. He fiddled with his bat, glancing at the remnants of the two days old pizza he’d heated up in the microwave fifteen minutes ago, lazily thrown in a piece of kitchen paper, next to a half empty bottle of Yoo-hoo. His white uniform from earlier was thrown in a pile in a corner, like a piece of garbage he was itching to get out of his house.
A sudden buzz from his bell was heard, throwing him off as he jumped a little, eyebrows furrowing in confusion as he went to the door, wondering who it could be at that time, since he wasn’t even expecting anyone. Or so he thought. The moment he opened the door, you stormed inside without even waiting for him to invite you in. Daniel stood speechless for one second, then shrugged it off, simply because it was you, and your ignorance of him was unquestionable. He looked shit, he realised; dressed in a dark gray T-shirt that had small oil stains on it because of the pizza, an abstract, unbuttoned red, brown and green colored shirt thrown over it.
“I’ve really missed you. It’s been almost three hours since I last saw—” he began sarcastically, but you cut him off abruptly, while placing a stack of papers onto the living room table.
“I can already tell that you forgot we had to meet up to discuss about the case by the way you’ve shamelessly displayed your gross dinner all over the files we need to present tomorrow. Good job, like always, Kaffee.”
Daniel didn’t bother to huff or give out any reaction, at that point, he knew that you were aware of the fact that you pushed his buttons just by breathing the same direction as him. He let his bat against the arm of the couch, taking a folder into his hands and pretending to examine it.
“Is Sam not coming?” he asked without raising his eyes to look at you.
“I don’t know, he’s your buddy. Aren’t you supposed to know better than me?”
You judged his choice of childish drink with a long, disgusting glare, then buried your face into the papers as well. Dawson and Downey relied upon the three of you deeply and if proving them not guilty meant you had to spend your Friday evening in Daniel Kaffee’s apartment, then so be it. It was a lot quieter than usual and the unfamiliar emptiness had you wondering. The baseball game was still on, distracting you from thinking clearly. “I think Kendrick ordered the Code Red. So do you,” you mumbled out of the blue, catching his attention in a second.
“You didn’t just come here to bother me?”
“You’re the worst lawyer I’ve ever met,” you spoke rudely, noticing Daniel’s face drop. “Why don’t you get the poor guys a new attorney, huh? You stand no chance anyway, you’re too afraid.”
“You still haven’t taken the time to get to know me, so I don’t think that you have any rights to go around telling me what to do, Commander,” the boldness of his tone matched yours as he sat on the couch, still denying the urge to look up at you, gauge your reaction to his words. He liked to ignore you, it gave him the impression that he had some sort of power over you that drove you as far mad as you did to him. Ignorance was kind.
“Think I’m going to change my mind about you the moment I hear your childhood sob story? They can all say you’re the best damn lawyer it’s ever been their pleasure to have as an attorney, and I still wouldn’t be convinced. But go on, though, I’ll humor you for tonight. Were daddy’s expectations really that high that they scare you off to do your job correctly?”
He pursed his lips, a slight furrow between his brows again as he stared pointedly at you. His heart crashed every time you went down the family path, not fully understanding how you’d figured him out so quickly and with less effort than even Jack put into his conversations with him. “Okay, then, if you really believe all that, get me replaced, I won’t stop you. Or did you already try that with no luck? Please, spare me the psycho-babble father bullshit, though, it’s your only argument and it’s getting tiring.”
“At least I have an argument.”
“Fucking congratulations! That’s just splendid!”
“Another lawyer won’t be good enough!” you accidentally admitted on your temper. Your eyes widened at the echo in the dead silence, that grew in the apartment, after what you’d just blurted out. Daniel’s eyes softened, filled with pure bewilderment, jaw going slack. His upper front teeth were visible as he stared at you stupidly enough to have your cheeks burning the brightest shade of red. You tried to find an excuse to reason yourself, but nothing could cover up the royal bullocks you’d thrown all over yourself.
He’d never let you live that moment down.
“You frighten me. I’m involved in a situation now, in which the stakes couldn’t be higher. I’m not going to take time out to give tutorials in criminal procedure to an internal affairs schoolgirl who doesn’t know what the fuck she’s doing and still has the nerve to threaten my lead.”
“I just melt when you sugar-talk me, Danny.”Daniel felt a sudden rush of heat form in the back of his neck, traveling all the way up to his face at the sound of his nickname falling out of your lips. It wasn’t even a big deal — everyone called him Danny, yet the way it sounded in his ears when you uttered it out, it felt as though someone had turned up the dial on his internal embarrassment thermostat to maximum, and now he was sure he was ready to burst at any moment. The awkwardness of the moment had both of you completely mute, blankly finding random things in his house to interestingly stare at, as if they were suddenly very important. “Anyway, I think you know exactly how to win. They need you.”
A dumbstruck smile lightened up his face.
“You really think so?”
“Do you have something to drink?” you dodged the question, knowing that you’d revealed too much of your genuine feelings about him. Of course you admired him, how could you not?
“Yeah — Yeah! Something to drink, yes, just a second, let me see what’s in the fridge,” he exclaimed, inexplicably jumpy as he practically flew to the fridge. The corners of your lips turned upwards, enjoying the way he struggled to roam through the drinks and food, some things falling over in his attempt to search in the back. When he finally approached you, he was proudly holding a small bottle with a yellow Yoo-hoo tag on it.
You sighed. “You’re ridiculous.”
“It’s chocolate milk, you’ll love it.”
What the hell, you thought, taking the drink from him as he handed it over to you with a warm smile. Your face was filled with disgust, almost hollering at the smell. When you let a few drops touch your lips, you coughed dramatically and shook your head in denial of what you’d just drank, placing the bottle back on the table.
“That’s the most foul thing I’ve ever tasted.”
“Wait until you try my cooking. I usually save that card until the fourth or fifth date, though,” Daniel smirked, eyes gleaming under the bright yellow light of his living room. He looks so dumb, how is this man a navy lawyer? you questioned yourself.
“Explains why you’re single, then.”
“Maybe I’m just waiting for someone.”
“Is it Jack Ross? ‘Cause I think he likes you back, you should totally make a move,” you teased him.
“Maybe said someone is annoying me as we talk.”
“Come on, Danny, can’t take a joke?”
He didn’t say anything, just rolled his eyes and twirled his bat on the ground, while pacing around the coffee table. “Can I ask you something personal?” he asked out of the blue, causing a pit of anxiety to form into your stomach.
“I suppose you’ll ask even if I refuse.”
“Look at you, you’re finally getting to know me.”
“Shoot, Kaffee.”
“What made you become a lawyer for the Navy?”
Your expression changed, now fully confused. You wondered how he’d possibly come up with that question all of sudden — was he doing some sort of research on you, get you exposed and out of his lead case so that you wouldn’t annoy him anymore with your constant complaining? Or was it more just Daniel being… well, Daniel and randomly coming up with the most out of context questions and things to discuss about?
“They wouldn’t let me fly the planes,” you simply gave and he tsk’ed with a dramatic head shake.
“Pegged you for the one that never gave up. You are becoming less of a role model on Junior Lieutenant Kaffee now, Commander. You’re like seven of the strangest women I’ve ever met.”
“That’s rich of you to say,” you added a little too quickly and loudly for your liking, hating how you were always so eager to defend yourself in situations that didn’t ask for it. “I’m the girl guys like you hated in sixth grade.”
Daniel’s eyes softened as he hesitantly took a seat next to you. “You’re wrong,” he muttered through his lips, looking down at his entwined fingers before exhaling exhaustively. “You’re the girl guys like me pulled the pigtails of at minor interactions just because they were too afraid of letting her know how they really felt about her.”
A pause. Silence built up in the room as Daniel kept looking down on his lap, eyes closed as if he was hoping for something, as if he was scared that the moment he’d open them, you’d be gone, because he’d screwed everything up again. But you were still there when he eventually decided to look over at you, staring blankly at him with no emotion whatsoever. He despised the fact that he couldn’t read you, hated the thought of not knowing exactly what went through your mind during that moment; it caused him too much anxiety, plus, with his little experience with girls, he’d never lived anything similar. They were all so chattery and urgent to fuck him that they didn’t hold anything back… and then, there was you.
You, who Daniel didn’t know how to feel about.
And suddenly, he couldn’t stand — bare — the fact that you’d been staring at him with so much to say, all that visible through your glassy eyes, and it was killing him, causing his stomach to flip, because he was ridiculously unaware about whether he did the right thing to reveal so much with that metaphor, or if he’d just ruined every aspect of professionalism between you.
“Kaffee?”
“Why are you looking at me like that?” he asked, his voice worn out, shaky as if he was about to break down right there in front of you. Your lack of response made his heart feel tight. “I’m not going to reassign Dawson and Downey to another lawyer, by the way. Neither will you ever be able to replace me, because I’m going to stick here.”
You instantly warmed up. For the first time, his confidence gave you that slight ounce of reassurance that you needed to get, put the colour back in your eyes as you grinned proudly at him, not caring about the so though Commander title you’d been given. “What made you change your mind?”
“Not you,” he replied, reciprocating the calmness and brightness of your face. “Just… don’t wear that perfume, it wrecks my concentration.”
“Really?” you asked in awe. Daniel just smiled. You noticed his Adam’s apple bob as he inhaled the courage to say something, then…
“This might be the wrong time to ask this, but would you really hate the idea of me taking y—”
“I am so sorry,” Sam interrupted, barging into Daniel’s apartment while panting, struggling to take his coat off as he put a hand over his chest. “I had to take care of my daughter, she got sick and my wife wasn’t home, I — Oh, I walked into something there, didn’t I?”
You think? Daniel mutely thought of saying to his friend, so mad inside as he glared at him with burning passion to slam the door shut into his face and returning to the conversation he was having with you less than twenty seconds ago.
“I need to go, anyway, I promised the Marines that I would visit them and help them prepare for the court. I’ll see you tomorrow, Danny. Bye, Sam,” you dismissed them, getting up from the couch and waving goodbye to the two of them as you walked outside with a small smile.
“No wait!” Daniel called, but it was already too late. “What the fuck, Sam?! You know something called knocking on the fucking door?”
Sam didn’t reply, simply because he was too busy explaining the story of why he thought he wouldn’t make it to the case preparation as he cleaned Daniel’s living room. He realised that his friend was paying no attention to him at all, only staring at the almost full Yoo-hoo bottle you’d left on the table from earlier, and that was all Sam needed to know exactly why he was being ignored. “You’re in love with her, aren’t you?”
Daniel never replied.
───
“Hi!” he greeted you with the following day, head peaking in your office through the half closed door. He looked dumb, his oversized blue varsity jacket covering most of his palms as he held onto the door with a wide grin, eyes sparkling. You couldn’t understand his excitement.
“Hey,” the reply was dry and held back.
“I think we might actually have just enough evidence to prove Dawson and Downey innocent, all thanks to you,” he claimed happily, allowing himself fully into your office. You gave him a weird look but didn’t question anything, instead ignored him as you organized the discarded papers on your desk into folders. Daniel’s face dropped at your lack of enthusiasm for him, worry written all over his face as he quickly began fiddling again.
“That’s quite literally my job, Daniel.”
“Did I do something to offend you?” His heart was racing now, mind stuck in the loop of any words that he could’ve said to cause your so indifferent reaction. “You’re giving me the cold shoulder. I thought we moved past that.”
“It was just one conversation about the case. It’s not like we’re expected to act like friends after not bickering for a total of five minutes.” Oh. Daniel’s stomach was tied into knots, he felt as though he’d been kicked in the crotch with the worst possible amount of strength. His face was paled, eyes growing blurry as he nodded at your statement, not finding himself strong enough to say anything back to you, and instead choosing to walk out with his last pieces of remaining dignity.
He thought you might had started liking him. Even a little, he didn’t care about the numbers.
Daniel got easily emotionally influenced, though, and his performance at the court was screwed. He wouldn’t communicate with either you or Sam, interrogating the men on the stand with such frustration that the jury sighed every five seconds. You pinched the bridge of your nose and tightened your fingers into fists, crumbling a paper in front of you as Sam touched your shoulder in a way of telling you to calm down.
But how could you? You were losing the case already and it hadn’t even been a day. What is he doing? you thought, relentlessly questioning his choice of tone and movements. You had no idea how you restrained yourself from slapping him against the wall when he returned to the desk, hands shoved into his pockets as he set his jaw.
“What do you think you’re doing?” you whispered yelled at him, but he didn’t even bother to look at you. When the judge dismissed everyone, Daniel walked away as if nothing had happened. Your head was going to explode, you decided, as you followed him, high heels slamming against the floor. You’d strangle the soul out of him, who would even defend you? Sam followed silently, keeping it low-key as he whispered at you not to create any more trouble. Daniel was seemingly upset and at the back of your mind, you wondered if the reason was the fact that you’d neglected him less than an hour ago back in your office. You felt like you should’ve kept that for yourself and tell him later eventually, when the trial would be over. “Do you have any idea why he’s like this?” you turned to the other attorney.
“Why do you think?” was the only thing he left you with, his words ringing in your head as your pace quickened unnecessarily faster than expected. Your breath was coming in short, eyes stinging as you repeatedly called for Daniel’s name in the corridors without any response.
He was proving you right by all this.
All your doubts and fears about him being unable to thoroughly handle the case were bursting one by one, getting huger and huger until you’d start breaking down in a corner on his behalf. You hated Daniel Kaffee more than any other person.
“Daniel, fucking stop!” you shouted and he finally stilled. Your immediate instinct was to take a break from the intense walking, hand over your chest as you tried to regain your balance.
“Maybe you should’ve asked for them to keep me out,” was all he said before disappearing outside. He was mad, but mostly exhausted with everything, especially overwhelmed by you. He was done trying; finished with the case, finished the way you treated him — how one day you loved him and the next day you pretended he wasn’t even there, as if he didn’t exist. And he was fine with that, you didn’t want him, he could live.
But you gave him false hope, or so he thought.
“Lieutenant!” he heard you yell again, your pants mixed with the sound of your heels against the hallway floor. He decided not to turn around, didn’t want to hear anything that you had to say. “Lieutenant Kaffee!” And suddenly, he stopped dead in his tracks, letting out a breath as he slammed his arms against his sides in defeat.
“What? What do you want from me?” he asked with frustration, voice raspy and shaky as he firmly loosened the black tie that felt like it was cutting the air out of his lungs, suit all messed up and wrinkly from fighting it off his body. He felt heavy, bothered, didn’t want to exist anymore.
“What do you mean what?” you asked with fragility, and it was the first time he’d ever heard you speak a sentence so softly and fearfully.
“I mean what is it?”
“I wanted to say that you did quite well in there, even though it was your first time and that—”
“Please — don’t even — don’t even start…” he cut you off mid-word, eyes squinting close as he tried not to look at you, afraid that just one glance at your face would be enough for him to bend.
“Why not?”
“Because you’re giving me mixed signals!” he abruptly bursted, making you jump a little. You’d never heard him raise his voice like that before, despite the fact that you’d been into countless bickers before with him. No, there was something different this time, something more into it.
“What?”
“You’re — you’re confusing the shit out of me! One day you fucking hate me and the other you get so nice with me that it almost makes me believe that maybe, just maybe, I could have a chance with you… Start things over. And then you go back to day one — and no one has ever… I feel like one day I’m saving you from a burning building and the next I’m throwing you to the sharks, this — this is exactly how it is with us and it’s all your fucking fault! I’ve tried so hard with you, to make myself worthy, to catch your attention, to make you realise that I don’t think I’ve never admired a person more than you in my life before… and you keep throwing everything away! And I’m fine with that, but for the name of love, stop giving me hope that one day maybe you’ll actually start liking me.”
His monologue left you speechless, every word, every breath engraved and buzzing into your troubled brain as he walked away, this time without being stopped by anyone. Daniel felt like rubbish. On one hand, he felt relieved for letting the thoughts that had been eating him alive out, but on the other he felt even heavier. He knew he’d risked so much for speaking up, but the final straw had been put into his overfilled glass.
For a short moment, he considered turning back.
Perhaps you’d have something to say to him, but that was exactly what he dreaded. The more he’d spend looking at you, waiting for an answer or even the slightest reaction, the more he’d want to listen to what you’d have to say to him, and that was cautionary for his condition. Obviously, he’d fallen for you along the line. You’d screwed him over so deeply that he didn’t know where to grasp at to save himself from losing the grip he had by the end of the cliff. No, he decided, if you wanted him half as bad as he wanted you, you’d go after him, search for him, ask people, show that you cared, even if the amount wasn’t a great deal.
It was insignificant to him, if you cared about him as much as he did for you, he just wanted you to care. Even as a companion, or a respected fellow attorney. You didn’t follow him, though, and the sad part was that he wasn’t even surprised. Of course you had nothing to say to him, you’d made that very clear by wanting him so badly off the case that you were prepared to move the sky and earth just to earn the satisfaction of watching him be defeated. And if you so utterly needed him uninvolved, why did you give him motivation not to quit? Why did you keep pushing him?
Every ounce of feeling that he had for you was a big, unanswered why that tortured him inside.
Daniel wished he could erase from your memory what he’d just confessed. Make you forget all about it, have you look at him with the same hateful eye that you always did. Because now, you’d look at him with pity, scared of what to say to him (he’d revealed way too much and he was only just realising it) — gosh, he’d ruined it. He was so exhausted, both mentally and physically.
Ethic violations were involved in the mess, as well, because of course they would be. A sexual relationship with a fellow counsel in the middle of a trial? What was he thinking? As if you even wanted him breathing near you in the first place.
───
It had only been three, going to four hours, ever since Daniel got his heart crashed, made a fool of himself not only in the courtroom, but also in front of you. For him, it felt like days, even a full week. His only company was a bottle of Jack Daniel’s that he’d almost finished, stuffing it in his coat’s large pockets as he walked back home.
This was how you felt about him. You hated him.
And he’d have to make amends with that, but not without the encouragement of cheap alcohol pouring into his system. Thank god for Ross, who always bought him all the booze he needed.
You, on the other hand, had wasted all of your breath trying to look for Daniel everywhere. It’d almost been an hour and you were at the hands of Sam, trying to think about all the possible locations that his friend could be at. You searched for him at the O Club, down at the basketball court, even his own apartment, but he was nowhere to be found. Your heart was beating rapidly against your chest, caught in your throat as you walked back to his neighborhood, opting to give his apartment another try. It’d been more than thirty minutes ever since you first went, maybe he’d returned by now. Your hands were shaking as you brought a loosely balled up fist to the surface of the door, hesitantly knocking on it once, twice — then heard steps from inside.
“Go away.”
Your entire body eased momentarily at the sound of his voice. Good, he wasn’t dead. His tone was cold and distant, nevertheless, and you knew that he was in no mood for seeing or even speaking to you after how you’d behaved during his speech, or even earlier, during the trial. Your mouth went dry at the first attempt of speaking back to him.
“Danny—”
“You’ve got no place to call me that.”
Oh. So, you’d really broken him.
“Daniel,” you corrected yourself halfheartedly, your hands rubbing up and down against the sides of your outer thighs, “can you let me in?”
“No.”
Your face dropped. You weren’t used to Daniel being so… you didn’t even know how exactly to describe it. The relationship between the two of you hadn’t started on a brilliant basis, neither did it get any better throughout all the time, but even though he didn’t seem to like you very much, he’d always been open for you, in some sort of way that your mind still struggled to comprehend.
“Daniel, please,” you begged, stepping back, surprised when his door creaked open just an inch to reveal his heavy lidded, blurry eyes.
“Do you have anything to say to me about the case? Otherwise, get moving, Commander.”
“Did you… Are you drunk?” you found yourself asking worriedly, ignoring his previous question.
“Why do you care, huh? Last time I checked, you didn’t give two shits about me!” he yelled, slamming the door back shut into your face, causing you to flinch. “Get the fuck out of here.”
“So this is it?”
Daniel swore he was only a second away from exploding, your question sending him over the edge as he chuckled in frustration, not knowing whether you asked what you asked simply to piss him off, or if you were genuinely placing an inquiry that you had been unclear about.
“This is what? Are you fucking with me?”
“You’ve hated me ever since you stepped into my office. You always did, say it. Just say that you hate me, you can’t stand me anymore, come on. Or is this just for Sam’s ears? That you wished I’d taken you out of the case just so you wouldn’t have to listen to my voice any longer. Come on, Kaffee, that’s all you’ve got to say.”
Daniel backed away in disbelief, then made you silently wince as he punched hard against the door, the sound of his skin hitting the processes wood ringing in faint echoes inside your eardrums. You’d driven him out of control.
“Me? Hate you? How could you possibly say such a thing — I — I…” Daniel wasn’t sure how to continue the sentence. There were too options and both of them would have a negative impact upon your relationship with each other and case.
One; he could let his tipsy mind ramble on and on about how you hadn’t once left his mind ever since he saw you for the first time, that he’d never felt so intimidated by anyone, never had fallen into such a deep awe of someone’s passion and ability to pursue their goals in life. That he wished he could possess the one thirds of your courage and determination, because you were honestly scared of nothing, got all the questions you wanted answered within a heartbeat. You didn’t back down in any occasion, you were your own person and Daniel had fallen so deeply in love with everything that you so proudly owned in your character that he thought he was a lost card.
Two; he could never continue the sentence, trail off and stay completely silent, see if you had anything to reply to him — and of course, he opted for the safest option, which was the second one. He was too scared of wearing his heart on his sleeve, knowing that you’d break it anyway.
“The fact that you’re so fucking scared of being a lawyer is beyond me. You’re in the Navy for crying out loud, get a hold of yourself,” was all you muttered in response, leaning against his door, completely unaware of the fact that he was also in the same position, that if the door disappeared in thin air that very moment, you’d fall on top of him with your mouth so dangerously close to his own that he’d pass out (and so would you, in some extent.)
Daniel’s every muscle was so tightly contracted, that he believed they’d crash altogether without any warning if he spent one more minute, forehead pressed against the door, knowing damn well that you were still outside, that you breathed just as heavily as he did, that he’d tied himself to the tracks, ready to be run over.
He knew that whatever was happening in that moment would reek of runny makeup and salty tears, sweat of agony running down the faces of two attorneys, bewildered and scorned as they fell into silence in preference of doing what they’d studied in law school for four years; defend their own selves, master the words. The ability of speaking had died down your throats near the day you chose bitterness over respect for each other.
Daniel averted his eyes to the ground, mustered all the courage he could possibly get and loosened his fingers in his fist. He called your name once, twice, but no reply ever came back. He knew you’d left, could understand it by the way he peaked through the glass hole in his door and saw that no one was there. His logic screamed at him to stay where he was, crash in the couch, close his eyes and sleep, forget about the case, forget about you, the conversations, the feelings, the tension, everything. Take down the entire Jack Daniel’s bottle and lean into the cushions without any further thinking.
Thank God that Daniel hated logical reasoning.
His door flew open as he hurried outside, not caring about his half unbuttoned dress shirt and blowsy uniform. It had been raining for hours now, the steady patter of water hitting against the windows of his small apartment long since faded to a dull rush in the back of his mind. He stepped out of the building, the thick material of his coat almost getting soaked through instantly. He squinted his eyes, trying to make out how far ahead you’d gotten, the pouring rain blurring his vision as he eventually spotted you on the road.
“Commander!” he shouted, but you didn’t turn, so he called for your name instead, numerous times until your feet gave up. A piercing gust of wind shook the trees above your head, showering your already miserable frame with a fresh deluge. You wiped the water from your eyes with a wet sleeve and tucked a lock of long brunette hair that fell into your eyes behind your dampened ear.
“I don’t want to talk to you anymore,” you said with a steady voice, barely audible in the downpour. Daniel tried to catch his breath as he finally reached you, looking like he was about to either melt along with the rain, or simply vanish.
“No, I can’t accept that. We — We braved extraordinary circumstances to get over here. You need to give me one chance,” he begged, but you kept walking, tired of his mediocre speeches and dramatic overreactions everywhere possibly imaginable. You wanted facts, wanted to listen to him fully, crystal clearly admit what he had to say. Not dance around it like he’d catch on fire. “Hey, I’m talking to you! Fucking listen to me!”
“Fuck off, Lieutenant Kaffee!” you screamed back, not caring about the fact that the rain would probably give you a deadly cold the following day, if not kill you by throwing you off at a very abrupt road pit. Daniel was soaked, hair sticking to his forehead and still very drunk. He felt embarrassed of how high pitched his voice got whenever he yelled from the top of his lungs, almost sounding like a complaining kid at the supermarket, who wouldn’t get the sweets he wanted from the counter while waiting to pay.
He needed answers. Did you even like him?
“You’re saying I’m scared and you can’t even face how you feel!” he shouted catching you off guard. “You can’t even look at me without lying.” Your blood was boiling into your veins as you gave him that chance, which he so desperately wanted, to explain himself to you, to see what he had to say.
“What did you just say?”
Daniel came closer, hands shaking from the temper building within him, looking pathetic as his hair dripped along with the rain down his face.
“You say I’m scared, but you’re terrified. At least I’ve shown you how I feel about you. I give myself away, because I can’t hold back everything that goes into my head the second you walk in it. I’m too weak to defend myself when it comes to you — look at me, you make me forget how to do my job — and I’m one of the most qualified lawyers out there, according to the Navy.”
“What are you talking about? You haven’t even once told me anything about how you feel about me. I’ve overheard you say to Sam that you hate me, that you wish you couldn’t hear my voice. What the fuck were you on about, huh, Kaffee?”
Daniel threw his hands and looked up, gulping down his worn out feelings as he tried to collect himself from breaking down in front of you, yet once again. “You know what Sam said to me when I kept telling him all that stuff about you?”
“I don’t care about what he said to you,” you scoffed in annoyance, ready to leave again, when you heard the words fly out of his mouth.
“That I’m in love with you!”
Daniel ached to prove that you were the scared one in this, breath wasted as he summoned every single ounce of remaining strength he had to grab you by the arm and yank you close to him, crashing his lips into yours forcefully. He never imagined the first time he’d get to kiss you to be that way. His body was trembling in fear (and because of the weather), heart hammering in the most literal way possible. The kiss barely lasted, seeing as you pushed him away almost instantly.
He felt crashed into millions of pieces, exploding like they did in the cartoons. He’d gathered so much courage to finally kiss you, and there you were, looking at him like he’d committed some sort of unbelievable crime, like he’d offended your honour. Daniel felt like an idiot; he’d ruined everything even worse. Had he really misinterpreted every look, every conversation, every fight? He wanted to cry, so he did. His tears ran down his salty cheeks, mixing with the rain, which allowed him to sob as hard as he needed to, not caring whether it made him look more pathetic and weak than he already was.
Who was going to see anyway?
You weren’t saying a word and Daniel was sure that another heartbeat was all it would take for the organ to crawl up inside his throat and hurl out, break; rip in two. He’d said his biggest fear, had actually put the exact words in it, then proceeded to throw an action. And he was destroyed, not because you didn’t kiss him back or because you pushed him away, but because you had chosen the mute torture of silence.
“…What else do I have to do to prove to you that I’m so fucking head over heels for you that I can’t possibly concentrate on anything else? I might lose the case and make a fool of myself, because you make me not think,” he tried again, this time with a fragile and weak voice. He honestly had no idea what more he could do to convince you about his feelings, about how nuts you drove him with your attitude and insane personality.
But again, you opted not to say anything. Instead, you quickly took a few steps forward, grabbed him by the ends of the collar of his long, black coat and pulled him into you, mouth capturing his own swiftly as you tilted your head to the side, deepening the kiss. Daniel was paralyzed for a short second, not knowing if he’d been struck by some sort of lightning that had killed him and brought him to a different reality, or whether you kissing him was an actual, real, skin to skin thing.
Stupidly enough, he allowed his lips to turn upwards into a broadening smile, responding with such enthusiasm, even though he was ridiculously taken aback by your choice of action. It took him a minute to regain his composure, the storm — hell, the entire world — around you feeling meaningless as his hands laced with yours, causing your grip on him to relax a little.
Daniel was falling fast, faster than ever, craving more of your scent and the feel of you pressed closer and tighter to him, the taste of alcohol mixing along with the buds of your mouth, unsure how this whole story had even began for him.
But his stupid, stupid lungs had to find air, and he was forced to separate from you with the feeling of gravity being torn out of his core. You’d disconnected your hands from his (with another pitiful drop in his stomach) so you could run them through his disheveled, wet hair, and his eyes fluttered close at the touch. You looked up at him with an emotion that neither of you could really find the words to explain, and Daniel wanted to kiss you again, heat rising to his face, forming a what he thought could be a permanent blush as his heart nearly leapt out of his chest.
“I’m so wet,” you realised out loud with a dumb smile, trying to hold back a giggle as you watched him bemusedly, eyes glowing brightly at the way he looked at you with such confusion, a bulge straining into his damp uniform pants.
“What — wha… what?” his voice was high pitched and shaky as he cleared his throat. “Oh! Shit — the rain, let’s — let’s get you inside!” He was so flustered and hard, just from one kiss, and he stuttered in every word he spoke. He took his coat off and covered your head with it as he grabbed you by the hand, hurrying back to his apartment.
When you went inside, you acted all unbothered, like nothing had even happened just a moment ago, and it was killing Daniel, because he was terrified of you throwing him away once again. He helped you to the couch, then rushed into his bedroom, pulling out every piece of clothing that he had in the wardrobe with such anticipation as he anxiously roamed through the selves to find blankets to offer you, get you dry from the rain.
“Okay, this is all I have. Do you prefer the pink or the... what color is this — orange? Coral? Erm, which one—” he was getting tongue tied and you found it adorable, taking both blankets off his hands as he stared at us, mesmerised. You looked over your shoulder, as if he was looking through you, then returned your gaze at him, getting nervous. “I’ll — I’m going to make coffee!”
You heard him smack his forehead as he went in the kitchen and grinned like a child. “Daniel?” you called from the living room with a slight chuckle.
“Yeah?”
“It was coral, by the way.”
“Huh?”
“The blanket. It was coral. Can I change my clothes? I’m getting your couch wet,” you asked.
“Sure! Closet’s in the left.”
You got up, wrapped in the blankets as you walked into his closet, shamelessly going through all of his ridiculous, childish, cheap shirts that you so deeply hated (loved). You found a black shirt, which you threw over your body as you picked a checkered shirt to put on as well, feeling a little lump from the chest pocket. You went through it and pulled out an unused condom, cheeks turning pink as you held out the object and went to the kitchen, proudly exposing it in your hand.
“Is this a gift?” you questioned, laughing wholeheartedly when you noticed Daniel’s cheeks burn red in earth swallowing embarrassment.
“Oh… uhm,” he snatched the condom off you, “you’re wearing my special shirt.”
“Your what?”
“My special shirt. It’s for… good luck… for when I go to baseball games and everything. Or — Or dates. Nothing important, no need to make a great deal out of it.” He felt dead inside, still very confused by the fact that you still hadn’t made the smallest reference to the kiss you’d shared. Was it just a thing that occurred due to the heat of the moment? It broke him just to think so, because for a split minute, he gave himself the permission to picture the two of you together, as an actual couple in love. Was he supposed to bring it up first? Were you waiting for him?
Daniel felt like a jerk, unintentionally pouting.
“Please,” you mumbled. Please stop being pathetic, I really like you too. “Danny?”
“It’s still raining. You can stay… I mean, if you want to, of course.” And gosh, both of you were about to melt, saying nothing, just staring at each other with millions of words being exchanged just through the different kinds of gleams in your eyes. You fucking hated Daniel Kaffee so much.
“Danny?” you repeated and he urgently shook his head, letting you know that you could keep going with the question. You smiled warmly, wrapping your arms gently around his neck, then, “I’d love to stay overnight. Oh, and you’re like seven of the strangest men I’ve ever met.”
FIN.

Pairing: The Rogue’s Gallery (Geralt, Syverson, Mike, August Walker, Walter Marshall) x Stephanie Daniels (OFC)
WC 1468
Warnings: Alluded to sexy times?
Days and weeks passed, August giving her her space, but his distance was starting to physically hurt. Jordan went quiet again, but she didn't get complacent as the last time he went quiet, he re-emerged in a spectacularly painful fashion. She dug her keys out of her pocket, getting back from dropping Albert and Mike off at the cabin. She would have stayed, but she was up for the on-call rotation for work so she needed to be by her work laptop and a stable Internet connection. The cabin was great, but internet and cell service were anything but stable up there.
Stephanie paused when she saw the man standing outside of her apartment. He was handsome, with neatly combed black hair and chiseled jaw, the three piece suit he was wearing fitting him expertly so it probably cost more than she made in a month.
"Stephanie Daniels?" He asked and she nodded. "I'm Napoleon Solo, a Representative of the Pack Council." He felt like a Beta, but his bosses gave her pause.
"How can I help you?" She asked.
"May we talk inside?" He asked pleasantly.
"Sure." She said and he moved aside so she could unlock the door, following her into the apartment. He walked past her as she closed the front door and she watched as he looked around the unit.
"I was told Michael and Albert Syverson lived here with you?" He asked.
"They're up north, with their brother."
"Yes, Markus Syverson. Along with a former Homicide Lieutenant, and a Council Tracker."
"Yeah." If he was trying to unsettle her by basically saying he knew everything about her, he was failing. "What brings a Council Rep out to see me?"
"Ms. Daniels," He said, turning to face her, "I've heard that you're not…pleased with how the Council handles its internal issues with packs under their purview."
"Why should they care what I think about them?"
"When it affects their handling of said issues, they care." He said, "August Walker."
"What about him?"
"He was given an assignment recently and he turned it down, saying that he would not be taking assignments for the foreseeable future."
"Okay? And?"
"His reasoning was that his Mate didn't agree with the nature of the assignments and his role in resolving them." Napoleon said, "That would be you, correct?" She just crossed her arms over her stomach, arching a brow at him. "How can I change your mind?"
"Don't think you can, if we're being honest. What the Council is doing is underhanded and shady, and I told August that. These packs that are breaking human laws should be held to those laws and the punishments for breaking them, not wiped off the map."
"And these punishments are?"
"Incarceration, for whatever duration is deemed suitable by a court of law. You do the crime, you do the time, that sort of thing." She said and he huffed a short laugh, the corner of his lips perking into a small smile, flashing pearly white fangs.
"You're incredibly naive, Ms. Daniels." He said and she shrugged.
"Maybe I'm just an idealist." She said, "But my point is, the Pack Council is not a sovereign government within the United States with its own laws and rules and regulations and punishments for those who break them, and wolves are not sovereign citizens who do not have to follow the laws of the United States, nor are beholden to the penalties for breaking those laws. So, by sending out these "Cleaners" to "take care of" wolves who are breaking the laws of the states they reside in, or just simply don't want to play by the Pack Council's rules, they are thereby committing murder on a massive scale. Cleaners are hitmen, basically, is what I'm saying, silencing the naysayers and keeping their image clean."
"Ms. Daniels..."
"Am I wrong about any of that?"
"It's not that--" He suddenly felt like an Alpha and it made her shoulders tighten.
"Am. I. Wrong." She asked again and he was silent before giving her another small smile, looking away from her.
"Have a nice day, Ms. Daniels."
"You as well, Mr. Solo." She opened the front door and held it open as he walked out, seeing him pass by August as he was coming into the building.
"Female Alphas." Napoleon said to him as he went past and August watched him go before turning his attention to her.
"What did Leon want?"
"The Council sent him to try to "reason with me", I guess. It didn't work." She said and he huffed.
"Yeah, he's one of their more popular mouthpieces. Looks good in front of a camera."
"I thought he looked familiar." She said with a slight scowl. He didn't say anything, just stared at her for a moment before sighing, turning to head up the stairs. "August." He stopped, but didn't look at her so she went to him. "Hey." He still didn't look at her, but a sigh shook his chest as she laid her hand on his arm.
"I miss you." He said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Look at me." She said and he hesitated a moment before turning his head to look at her, the pain in his eyes almost palpable.
"I miss you, Stephanie." He said, "You're starting to fade and it's like someone is slowly chopping off a limb. One cut at a time. I'm losing you, and I don't want to lose you. You're my Mate."
"August, I--" She stopped with a sigh, "Fuck it." Reaching up, she wove her fingers into his hair, pulling him down into a hard kiss. He responded instantly to her, turning to her fully, his hands wrapping around her waist. He pulled her against him sharply, capturing the noise she made with his lips moving against hers. His hands slid down over her ass, making a shiver race down her spine and she broke the kiss as he palmed the backs of her thighs through her jeans. She hopped up as he lifted, wrapping her legs around his waist and moving her fingers through his hair as he crossed the hall, walking into her apartment and kicking the door closed behind him with such a force that it rattled in the hinges. She kissed him again as he carried her into her bedroom, staying wrapped around him as he knelt on the bed, pressing her against the pillows.
They lay in bed afterwards, his arm over her stomach as he tucked his face into her neck.
“Sure hope I didn’t miss any calls from the answering service.” She said, “Little awkward to explain why to Heather.” August snorted, the tip of his nose moving behind her ear and he turned her face to him with fingertips at her jaw, taking her lips in a kiss that made her breathe in deep, her hand going to his side. “That Council Rep guy said you stopped taking assignments.” He nodded.
“I thought about what you said, about how these people are dying just to keep the Council looking good to the public. What I did with the Agency protected people, the US and sometimes the entire world, but these packs didn’t do anything to warrant a death sentence. Some of the things they were doing would make you want to kill them as a gut reaction, but they weren’t punishable by death in the eyes of the law. The others…” He stopped with a sigh, “Benign anti-authoritarianism isn’t a crime. Not wanting to be told what to do, but not hurting anyone, isn’t a crime. How did Peter put it? I was the “Council’s attack dog”? Yeah, that was accurate. They were using me to do their dirty work, just like Langley used me after they found out I was a wolf. I’m done being used.”
“I think Sy wants me to go for a Council seat.” She said and he arched a brow at her. “He told me there were no female Alphas on the Council and I made a remark about how maybe there should be. He’s been dropping hints since then, but you know him, he’s about as subtle as a brick through a window.”
“You’d be good.” He said and she snorted.
“You’re biased.” She said and her cell phone went off, making her jump out of bed. Digging it out of her pants on the floor, she answered the call, heading over to her dresser and the notepad and pen she kept on it. “Stephanie. Okay. Did they give an NPI? Phone Number? Okay, I’ll log in and give them a call. Have a nice day.” She hung up the call and looked at August laying on his back in bed, his hand behind his head. “Time for work.”

Battle of Gettysburg - Day 2
July 2
4:30 PM
The Texas Brigade Attacks Devil's Den
The artillery bombardment has just ended. The attack was about to begin. As they waited, their division commander road by them and, in a loud voice, said: "Fix bayonets, my brave Texans! Forward and take those heights!" With that, the Texas Brigade cheered and prepared to launch their attack.
On July 2 General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, found himself facing an enemy dug in a strong position. The Union Army of the Potomac were occupying the high ground and Lee wanted to dislodge them. Despite complaints from his trusted officer, Lieutenant General James Longstreet, who wanted to march the army away to a place where the Union would be attacking them instead of the other way around, Lee decided to plan for an attack.
His plan was a two-pronged attack. Up on the north, against the Union's right flank, the Confederate Second Corps was to attack Culp's Hill. However, this was to only be a diversionary attack, as the main assault would come further south. Targeted against the Union's left flank, the Confederate First Corps was to strike the Union forces at Cemetery Ridge, where the Confederates believed the Union left flank was.
However, they were wrong. In reality, the Union left flank extended further south from Cemetery Ridge. Occupying positions from Cemetery Ridge down to the base of the Little Round Top Hills, the Union III Corps held their ground. If the Confederates went through with their original plan, the Confederate First Corps' right flank would have been enfiladed by fire from III Corps as they moved against Cemetery Ridge.
But nothing went according to plan that day.
Having difficulty navigating through unfamiliar terrain, while also trying to remain undetected, the Confederate First Corps didn't get into position until 3:15 in the afternoon. But by that time, the Union positions had changed.
Major General Daniel Sickles, commander of the Union III Corps, saw some high ground in front of his corps. Fearing that Confederate forces would place artillery there to shell his positions, and remembering a similar incident that occured to him a few months ago during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Sickles decided to take it.
At 2:00 in the afternoon, despite being told by General Meade to hold his ground, Sickles advanced his corps and occupied pieces of terrain that are now known as the Peach Orchard, the Wheatfield, and Devil's Den. However, despite now holding higher ground, Sickles' move is often considered as a blunder. By moving forward and ahead of the main line of defense, Sickles not only created a gap between his corps and the neighboring II Corps, which was on their right flank at Cemetery Ridge, but he also exposed the Union left, leaving it open to attack.
Such an attack came at 4:00 in the afternoon, when Confederate forces, who have adjusted to the new tactical situation and deployed appropriately, began bombarding III Corps' positions with artillery fire. For thirty minutes the men of III Corps were subjected to an intense bombardment. Then, at 4:30 in the afternoon the Confederates attacked.
Stepping up first, General Hood's Division divided into two assaulting forces. Brigadier General Robertson's Texas Brigade was to attack Devil's Den, while Law's Alabama Birgade was to head for the Round Top Hills. However, due to the terrible rocky terrain, the two assaulting forces got mixed up. Some Texan Regiments from Robertson's Brigade ended up heading towards the Round Top Hills, while some Alabama Regiments from Law's Brigade went to Devil's Den. Despite this, the regiments heading for Devil's Den struck the Union line hard.
More rocky and confined terrain awaited the Confederates at Devil's Den. Despite this, they pushed on and engaged Ward's Union Brigade that defended the position. The fight was tough and intense, but eventually the Texans and Alabamians managed to push out the Union troops from Devil's Den.
However, the capture of Devil's Den could not be fully exploited, as General Hood was injured and taken out of action early in the fight, while his division's scattered brigades were too far from one another to coordinate further assaults.
At 5:10 in the evening, as one portion of Hood's Division secure Devil's Den, the other half was fighting an intense and difficult battle at Little Round Top.

Now Watching: The Saw Cinematic Universe!
This is one of my favorite cinematic universes. I have always loved these movies. Its horror, but done right. Scary for the right reasons, but not cheap jump scares. Music is great, who doesn't love Billy? I just recently watched Saw X and decided to make a post or two about it!
Tumblr media
Saw (2004)
Tumblr media
Photographer Adam Stanheight (Leigh Whannell) and oncologist Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) regain consciousness while chained to pipes at either end of a filthy bathroom. As the two men realize they've been trapped by a sadistic serial killer nicknamed "Jigsaw" and must complete his perverse puzzle to live, flashbacks relate the fates of his previous victims. Meanwhile, Dr. Gordon's wife (Monica Potter) and young daughter (Makenzie Vega) are forced to watch his torture via closed-circuit video.
Saw II (2005)
Tumblr media
On the hunt for the twisted vigilante and serial killer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), Detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) and his team must apprehend the elusive murderer to rescue eight people trapped in an abandoned house, before they succumb to his torturous and murderous games. One twist to this task is that Matthews' own son, Daniel (Erik Knudsen), is among the eight people Jigsaw has chosen to test for their lack of morality. With nerve gas pumping through the house, every second counts.
Saw III (2006)
Tumblr media
Dr. Lynn Denlon (Bahar Soomekh) becomes a pawn in the Jigsaw Killer's (Tobin Bell) latest gory game. Kidnapped and taken to an abandoned warehouse, she finds Jigsaw bedridden and dying. Her task is to keep the maniac alive long enough for Jeff (Angus Macfadyen), a fellow victim, to complete his own task. Each is unaware that Jigsaw has much bigger -- and deadlier -- plans in store.
Saw IV (2007)
Tumblr media
During the autopsy of serial killer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), a cassette tape is discovered in his stomach in which he warns that his gory games will continue. Sure enough, SWAT Lt. Daniel Rigg (Lyriq Bent) is forced to follow a blood-drenched trail of torture, dismemberment and death in order to find two missing colleagues. A pair of FBI profilers follow Riggs, suspecting he might be Jigsaw's accomplice, even as they unlock the puzzle of the killer's origins, seen in gruesome flashbacks.
Saw V (2008)
Tumblr media
Despite the fact that fiendish serial killer Jigsaw is dead, his work lives on through a new apprentice, Lieutenant Mark Hoffman, a cop who appeared to be hot on the murderer's trail. As fellow lawman Agent Peter Strahm begins to suspect Hoffman is Jigsaw's protégé, the fledgling killer sets out to dispose of him.
Saw VI (2009)
Tumblr media
With Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) still directing events from beyond the grave, Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) emerges as the heir to the killer's twisted legacy. But as the FBI closes in, Hoffman sets in motion a game that is designed to reveal Jigsaw's grand scheme.
Saw 3D (2010)
Tumblr media
As a fierce battle rages over Jigsaw's (Tobin Bell) terrible legacy, survivors seek support from a fellow survivor and self-help guru, who has a few dark secrets of his own. Meanwhile, crooked cop Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) seeks revenge against Jigsaw's wife and an author who has his own story.
Jigsaw (2017)
Tumblr media
After a series of murders bearing all the markings of the Jigsaw killer, law enforcement officials find themselves chasing the ghost of a man who has been dead for over a decade, and they become embroiled in a new game that's only just begun. Is John Kramer back from the dead to remind the world to be grateful for the gift of life? Or is this a trap set by a killer with designs of his own?
Spiral (2021)
Tumblr media
Working in the shadow of his father, Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks and his rookie partner take charge of an investigation into grisly murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city's gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer's morbid game.
Saw X (2023)
Tumblr media
Hoping for a miraculous cure, John Kramer travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure, only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer uses deranged and ingenious traps to turn the tables on the con artists.
Great series. I love this. There is no movie quite like this set, and its inspired movies since its inception. Different people have been involved in it, but it has always retained its quirks. Tobin Bell is amazing. If you have not seen any of them, look out for the chronological order post to see how to properly experience this!

There could be only one Machiavellian daddy standing in the "Billions" finale revenge showdown between Bobby "Axe" Axelrod (Damian Lewis) and his hedge fund usurper (and dangerous presidential candidate) Michael Prince (Corey Stoll). After seven seasons of cutthroat high-finance drama and power struggles, "Billions" went endgame with the titan matchup in Showtime's series finale (now streaming on Paramount+; airing on Showtime Sunday 8 EDT/PDT). But the entire cast of characters featuring ever-evolving allegiances got its due, including longtime Axe persecutor U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti), now working with his former nemesis to bring down Prince. The multi-pronged farewell episode even featured former U.S. Attorney Bryan Connerty (Toby Leonard Moore), who hadn't been a "Billions" regular since Chuck engineered his legal problems and prison stint in Season 4 for illegal wiretapping. Connerty made a surprise appearance to receive his reinstated law license, also engineered by Chuck as a peace offering. "This show was for the show superfans; we found the ultimate landing spot for all these characters," says Brian Koppelman, who created the series with David Levien and Andrew Ross Sorkin. The final positions from the "Billions" finale:
Axe made Prince a pauper, and resumed his office chair throne Prince helped orchestrate Axe's downfall in Season 5, which allowed him to get his greedy hands on Axe Capital. As Axe, the heavy-metal-T-shirt-wearing Road Runner of finance, realized he had finally been defeated by Prince, he uttered the line "So this is what it is like to lose." In real life, Lewis was leaving "Billions" to return to life in England for personal reasons. So Axe was written off (exiled to Switzerland) to avoid arrest by Chuck, thanks to a tipoff from Prince. Prince took over Axe's throne and renamed the kingdom Michael Prince Capital (MPC). With Lewis and Axe back for the final season, the downfall script was reversed. Axe returned to New York, with Chuck's help and urging, to join the team trying to stop Prince. The Never Princers, who included MPC's general counsel Kate Sacker (Dola Rashad), conspired to annihilate Prince's stock portfolio while the unsuspecting presidential candidate met the U.S. president at Camp David, as his mobile phone was locked up by Marine security. With the trap sprung, Prince flew into MPC in a rage. Showing the volatile side no one wanted to see responsible for nuclear weapons, Prince threw a printer through the office window of Chuck co-conspirator and ex-wife Wendy Rhoades (Maggie Siff). Prince bottled his rage seeing Axe and an office full of former employees present to witness his financial demise and presidential ambitions crushed in one bad news day. "So yeah Mike, this is what it's like to lose," Axe said to Prince, parroting his own line, with a very different subject. "I bet that felt good," Prince sneered back. "What does it say about someone who wants to throw somebody's words back in their face? Not great things," says Levien of the line. "That's why we found it so satisfying." Big winner Axe reclaimed his office chair with no trumpets, but only his faithful lieutenant Mike "Wags" Wagner (David Costabile) standing just behind him. While Prince hid dark ambitions behind noble ideas, Axe sent his traders out with the capitalist battle cry "Let's make some ... money!" with The Steve Miller Band's ode to bandit living, "Take the Money and Run," playing as the exit soundtrack. "That song felt just absolutely perfect for the show," Koppelman says.
Prince went down defiantly, vowing revenge With Humpty Dumpty falling off the financial wall and Prince's world in tatters, even his loyalists disbanded. Right-hand man Scooter Dunbar (Daniel Breaker) saw the light and realized how far the power duo had drifted in its quest for power. Finding he has been spared financial ruin, Scooter announced he's embarking on his dream of conducting an orchestra. In classic villain mode, Prince admitted defeat but vowed to return and financially crush Axe and anyone else who knocked him. "This country is built on second acts, and when you see mine, you better duck and cover," Prince said. "People like Prince are not laid low by things that would lay all of us low," Koppelman says. "In three years, the guy will somehow have bought The Sphere off James Dolan."
Chuck and Wendy end up laughing over dinner Chuck, the main Axe battler in many season finales, relished the slightly less sexy victory over Prince. Chuck also finally came up triumphant in his personal life. Wendy and Chuck's marriage, and vigorous BDSM sex life, had ended acrimoniously after Wendy worked for years as Axe Capital's high-end performance coach. But "Billions" ended with the two exes smiling as Wendy walked out of Axe Capital moments after turning down Axe's return to work offer. Wendy and Chuck agreed to go on a family dinner with their two children. The final shot featured Wendy and Chuck laughing at dinner with their kids, as noted chef Connerty performed impressive culinary tricks on the teppanyaki (Moore's real-life cooking skills were often highlighted). Wendy and Chuck don't resume life as a couple, "but they settled their issues, coming to a great place of mutual understanding, fondness and co-parenting," Levien says.

The evolution of Daniel Law in Kekkai Sensen
Confident bravado slowly shifts to more subtle actions.
Ah yes, time for more Kekkai Sensen meta and we are turning to a character who has slowly be worming his way into my heart as the story has progressed. When I first watched the anime, I absolutely did not like Daniel Law.  He was a classic cop character, smug, confident, full of bravado more than willing to make threats to others to achieve his goals. I’m in general not a fan of cops in media or in real life; it would take a lot for me to find any reason to like the police.  Yet, when I read the omake segment where Nightow absolutely gives Daniel shit, I knew I was starting to change my mind on him.
Let’s dive into Daniel and how his character has changed in the manga from his introduction all the way to his role in the Calamity Auction arc.
Tumblr media
The introduction of his character is very well done and channels classic noir/crime/detective media as he is revealed over a series of panels giving us a glimpse into his personality.
Between two establishing shots in the middle we have a man sitting on a bench, smoking a cigarette, and a partially cropped figure.  He has an open trench coat, dark suit and tie as well.  It really seems that a light colored (implied to be beige or tan) lightweight coat like his is almost a code for detective or private investigator.  There is a somewhat disheveled vibe to this smoking character.
As the discussion about the one thousand yakuza brothers occur the unnamed smoking man states that they are on the verge of moving and that he doesn’t have the people to deal with the situation.  We see a distinct swoosh of hair over his left eye and a cigarette between his teeth.
Tumblr media
Only then is he revealed.  The swooshy haired main is slouched forward on the bench with another man standing guard next to him, but we can’t see him up close yet.  It is only on the middle right panel that we see that Steven is the other side of the conversation which was asking if he wanted them to help.  Of course he replies that they could be arrested in all of the chaos.
The man agrees that they have all reasons to be cautious as there are others who’d very much like to seem them arrested in reality.
Tumblr media
The rumpled coat and smirk tell us so much about this man’s personality.  Furthermore, he is the first character who has been introduced who seems to hold his own in a conversation with Steven.  He baits Klaus into getting literally fired up to assist while Steven hangs his head in defeat, having not wanting to be involved with him.  By this point the visual cues from his outfit, bodyguard and mention of arrest are more than enough that the reader can conclude he’s a cop.  Finally, we get a smug grin where he eagerly states that ‘your boss’ has decided to help and he thanks them.  Steven is hesitant before he replies begrudgingly that he’ll owe them one before stating his name.  This is the Darkhorse translation which goes with Lieutenant Daniel Law (ugh, that low typo).  The anime also chooses to use Lieutenant as well.  Later scanlations will go with Assistant Inspector as his official title within the HLPD.
Tumblr media
Steven is not happy with angry eyebrows and a sweat drop combination.  Daniel than replies he’ll owe them one - hence why he’s decided to not arrest them.  God, that look on his smug ass face.  Makes me want to punch him, thinking that he’s the shit.
And readers, this is when I realized I did not like Daniel Law in the anime.  Threatening to arrest Klaus and Steven!  Jerk.  He even goes on to give K.K. a backhanded compliment about her lack of a bust but is an excellent sniper.  This results in her giving him a warning shot and Steven smiles as in response to his lame excuse it was supposed to be a compliment.  I’ve already mentioned how this scene is important character development for K.K. supporting Klaus and Steven understanding there is inherent risk in this meeting with the HLPD.  And also, just compliment her on her skills and leave the physical remarks out Daniel.
Interestingly, the anime has Daniel sitting on a briefcase of some sort and K.K. is not providing support, the page where she shoots at him is left out.  I think that the loss of this did a disservice to K.K.’s character and it also made Daniel look weaker as well.  The anime relied on the dialogue to convey the power dynamic while the manga does both.  The fact that he’s slouched on the bench while Steven and Klaus have to stand a safe distance away visually tells us that Daniel is the one with the most power in this situation.  In reality, we know that they are physically more powerful than he is, but they work in a legal grey area and Daniel does not giving him an advantage.
Keep in mind that these events occur in chapter 14 Run! Lunch!! Run!!! and that we will witness Steven stealing information from the police in chapter 16, Outlaw of Green.  Not sure if that favor that Daniel owes them is repaid by giving a blind eye to Steven’s actions with Anne?
Fully involved with the HLPD, Klaus and Steven head to the Eighth Precinct and get the full briefing from Daniel.  Of course the entire conversation is driven by Daniel and Steven while Klaus hangs back.
Tumblr media
It is Steven who then begins to leverage his own contacts, making it clear that he’ll look into it from his end.  Daniel only appears in a few more panels before the actions starts as Zapp, Zed and Leo are about to eat their long delayed lunch.
In the anime Daniel is given a rather drab color scheme. He also has that sort of messy appearance when he’s first talking to Klaus and Steven.  His characterization is also slightly different due to the introduction of the anime only plot line.
Tumblr media
We see back at the precinct he’s got his feet up on his desk as he leans back in his chair while on the phone with Steven.  His tie is also looser and we can see a more open collar - with Nightow’s characters in this series it means he’s working hard and down to business - just like Steven.
I think it is safe to conclude that Daniel’s character design is in part inspired by the famous TV detective Columbo.  His suit in this official artwork even has a green tie and purple toned suit.  Other photos show a muted brown suit so it is pretty clear that muted earth tones are the color palette for Daniel based off of Columbo.
Tumblr media
The next time we see Daniel in the manga until Back 2 Back.  The anime gives us the teaser in the OP here as the secondary cast are shown in the city while Leo and Zapp run through the streets.
Tumblr media
He also gets to be in the background looking annoyed as they arrest the mad scientists who were attempting to summon the earthshaker who were frozen by Steven in Get the Lock Out.  Daniel is with a subordinate who will show up in the Calamity Auction arc.  However, since a fair bit of season two is Kekkai Sensen chapter back fill he does not get anything else.
Tumblr media
Additionally, this scene is not in the manga - instead the anime team chose to include him to remind us that he exists along with the beat cop next to him.
In the manga Daniel appears in the Dead of Night Warfare chapters when Noctova Smile had descended.  This time, Daniel Law is not in the position of power visually.  Instead, Steven lifts the yellow police tape and strolls right into the crime scene.  Steven has the relaxed posture while Daniel points at him angrily cigarette in hand.
Tumblr media
He pauses before stating that Steven is well informed and fast as well.  It leads him to ask Steven when he even sleeps, which doesn’t get a reply but the retort that he could ask the same question of Daniel.  Pot, meet kettle.
Daniel tries to keep quiet, turning away while telling Steven he’s got nothing for him.  We see Steven frown as he thinks about his next move, which is to blurt out the truth with his sly smile - not like Daniel can even see it.  Both of these men have terrible posture.  Also note the pinstripe suit that Daniel is sporting under his trench.
Tumblr media
The bottom panel shows the huge frown on Daniel’s face as Steven, still nervously smiling confirms that he knows what the truth.  We see Daniel’s right hand look like it might make a fist, instead he reaches up and grabs Steven by the lapel of his suit and doesn’t have any kind words for Mr. Starphase calling him a bastard and ready to remove him from the crime scene by force.
Tumblr media
Steven calmly tells him to not worry about it, stating it came from his own internal sources.  The entire bottom panel is Daniel thinking things over with a very angry right eye glaring at Steven.  This then leads to the reluctant partnership between Daniel’s team and Libra.  He finally come to the conclusion it would be better to work with them; despite being in the weaker position, he makes sure to push his advantage as much as possible giving Libra the crappy end of the bargain.
Tumblr media
Steven is not thrilled and instead of threatening to arrest him, he says that Klaus has to talk to Daniel.  If not, Steven would have to do Daniel’s bidding.  This leaves Steven livid ‘cause, we know the man has [ahem] major trust issues, but seemed to think that his relationship with Daniel warranted a little more faith from the HLPD side.  I can assume that this means that off the page there have been more cases since Daniel’s first introduction where the two men have worked together successfully.
Thus begins the awkward meeting where the HLPD and Libra are going to follow the HLPD plan to transport Noctova Smile out of the city.  I’m also totally in favor of this outfit upgrade with the full three-piece pinstripe suit.  What can I say, I’m a sucker for well dressed men.  Of course, he almost gets attacked by Zapp but honestly, the conversation between Daniel and individuals like Zapp are pretty much the same as when they are being given orders by Steven.
Tumblr media
Daniel Law is the only character who is as snarky as Steven and this time he’s not as much of a dick trying to threaten people outright with arrest.  Now, he’s confident that he’s got everything covered.
However, when the discussion that he suspects that someone in Libra might leak information, it does not go over well with Steven.  Note, that this chapter is after Midnight Blue, where Garrett was removed from Steven’s team and Libra by his personal squad.  It might be a sensitive subject to Starphase as indicated by how fake his smile is.  Steven is even polite enough to ask him to please stop acting that way.  With emphasis that he really means it.
Tumblr media
Of course the Assistant Inspector’s confidence is crushed when a wax sealed letter is delivered to him.  From Veneno the interdimensional thief!  That expression on Steven’s face in the background while Daniel frowns is priceless.
Tumblr media
That look of shock and anger - which on the next page shows everyone looking disappointed that their job got even harder as he frowns in a semi-chibi form.
Chaos results as Veneno appears and despite all of Daniel’s preparations, things quickly unravel.  As expected, he and Steven play a role ordering other people to do things as the stakes get higher.  I personally love the panel were Daniel is driven by in the SUV yelling “Goddammmmiiitttt!” only to be followed by Steven screaming at Zapp, Zed, and Leo to not just stand there.
Tumblr media
When they finally catch up to transport truck with the Noctova Smile, it looks like Veneno will have it, until Curious explodes him into little bits of body parts.  Daniel Law in charge of the operation at first tells him to hand it over.
Tumblr media
Out of all the HLPD members present, he doesn’t even have a gun!  Are you sure that you are an American Daniel Law?  His attempt to stop Curious doesn’t go over well with Steven who whispers over to him stating it might not be a good idea.  He sasses back that he can’t just watch Curious take the Noctova Smile, thus, he’ll proceed boldly.
Tumblr media
This leads to an interesting monologue from Curious towards Daniel based on his legal rationale to acquire the Noctova Smile for the US government.  Seeing that Curious escaped from a US DOD lab, his words indicate that he was enticed by something or someone in the government and then captured and imprisoned.  We see a stern but nervous looking Daniel as he finishes talking.
Tumblr media
Daniel, likely in a moment of hesitation gives the order to fire and Curious begins to fight with Klaus.
Ultimately, Klaus uses the Noctova Smile to block a strike from Curious, destroying it and preventing anyone from getting it.  With the assistance of Veneno’s caster with some encouragement from Chain and Leo, Curious gets tossed into the Abyss for some time.
The absolute look of defeat on Daniel’s face says it all. Equipment has been destroyed, the Noctova Smile no longer even exists and his plans fell apart.
Tumblr media
It takes to Steven first address him, where he’s at a loss for words stating “We’re really, truly sorry  . . .”  The body language shows it from Steven’s side but Klaus looks like he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
Tumblr media
Everyone is exhausted and hopefully they all head home and get some sleep.
The next time Daniel Law returns is at the beginning of the Calamity Auction arc.  This time, it appears that Steven and Daniel have agreed to meet in relative secrecy on an equal level on an empty rooftop.  So, we’ve gone from cocky, to uninvited Steven, to what appears to be an arranged meeting - likely they went to call each other at the same time when the news broke about the auction.
Daniel starts out by relying the information that he knows from the Federal government.  Steven points out the internet still exists, but they quickly come to the conclusion that where there is a will, there will be a way.
Tumblr media
Both of them have much softer facial expressions.  Daniel Law seems more willing to accept that the situation will continue on despite all efforts to stop it.  Steven agrees and Daniel states it should be left up to the experts.  Of course Steven knows there are all sorts of ways to enter the city outside normal means.  They then start to determine who is going to do what as Daniel wants to know how Libra will enter the venue.  Steven can only reveal that they are already on it along with the Werewolf Bureau.  Daniel pauses before asking if he can share the information with him.
Tumblr media
Steven then hesitates not replying, prompting Daniel to ask if he can believe Steven.  As he’s done previously, Steven does not answer Daniel’s question and only states that he feels the same way.  Sooo, this means that both men want to believe each other at this point but also still can’t completely trust each other.  Steven smiles as he asks the rhetorical question that they know how each of them work which is the best answer he’s willing to give.
They have come a long way in their dynamics since we first saw them interacting in a small park.  Their facial expressions show it so clearly.  Daniel is serious, not smug and Steven is relaxed as opposed to aloof. This sets up their next encounter soooo well.  They almost trust each other, or know each other well enough to feel confident in what the other does reveal.
Until the feds decide to attack Libra and Steven escapes with the team except for Klaus who allows for himself to be arrested.  Upon learning this, Daniel is in an absolute panic.  He rushes back to the office where he asks what the hell is going on, to his younger brother Marcus.
Tumblr media
Marcus has less swooshy hair and much rounder eyes than Daniel giving him an even younger appearance.  He’s also comfortable enough to stroll around while carrying a handgun in the office.  Marcus simply writes off the arrest of Klaus as an order that they cannot do anything about.  Daniel angrily replies he’s well aware of the situation and points out they need Klaus.  He both concludes the feds are stupid to pull away Klaus and are confident when they shouldn’t be.
Tumblr media
The situation only gets worse when Marcus informs Daniel he’s about to be taken off of active duty and placed under house arrest.  Daniel thought that Marcus was going to stop him from being impulsive but instead, his brother (who must be another more junior detective) is taking over.
Tumblr media
The rationale is that Daniel is tainted from the Noctova Smile Incident.  He brought Libra into the plan and then Klaus destroyed it.  This shows that Daniel Law is now guilty by association with his previous actions.  It would be interesting to know if someone was monitoring him when he’d gone to meet with Steven on the rooftop.
One of the more emotional older cast members, it is not surprising that Daniel reacts by grabbing onto his younger brother.  Man, Daniel looks like he’s gone lose it calling Marcus a stupid idiot and that if the HLPD keeps taking the fall for every little thing there will be no more local law enforcement.
Tumblr media
Marcus concludes that it is a violent opinion and he’s trying his best, but other coworkers are seriously wondering what is up.
Daniel’s terrible day only gets worse.  He heads to the restroom while grumbling about how bad the decisions are, bemoaning how many people will likely die as this thing shakes out.  Only to get his ass frozen by Steven.  Steven A. Starphase, you have some balls to stroll right into the bathroom at HLPD HQ.  I love how Steven feels that a ball cap and white short sleeve dress shirt are boring enough for him to waltz on in.  Like we saw in the last arc with him, he predicted that Steven would be coming for him.
Tumblr media
These panels are mainly Daniel talking Steven down from doing something worse and proving that he was out of the loop having been taken off duty.  What really seals it is the fact that he has the same belief that those in Libra do. The fact that Daniel is only partly frozen indicates that Steven 1.) needs info from him and 2.) likely trusts him enough to try to hear him out.
Tumblr media
This entire five page sequence shows the complete reverse in their dynamics from when Daniel was convincing Libra to assist him in the yakuza situation.  As Daniel thaws out, he slams his fist on the tile, declaring that he’ll be in touch and will not stay silent in the matter.
Throughout this entire arc, Marcus will act on behalf of the feds while Daniel will work in such a way that Libra will be able to use his information without being obvious about it.  After the Auction House incident, Daniel starts pounding the pavement talking to the beat cops to get an idea what is going on.  He’s with MacKenzie, the blond guy from the Noctova Smile incident and they are trying to figure out how people were able to leave the building with all the exits closed off.
Tumblr media
The front line cop (Harrison, I’m guessing from the fuzzy context) mentions that one of the snipers spotted bats leaving the venue, Daniel muses if the bats are a sign of the Blood Breeds but states it would be really stupid.  The on duty officer than realizes that Law should be under house arrest while MacKenzie says he’s on his way to the grocery store.  It becomes obvious that Daniel is disobeying orders and MacKenzie is fine to ignore them as well.  The other officer asks Law if he could do something to help.  This shows that people really seem to trust Law, however, he’s realizing if they get caught it will be his job on the chopping block and not theirs.  Calm is not a word to associate with Daniel Law.
Daniel’s ability to glean this information will prove to be critical as the arc progresses.  The next time there is a group of bats spotted in the sky, Daniel pauses for a moment.  He’s supposed to be under house arrest and not anywhere near other people and we get to see the tension build as he decides what to do.  His expression is down turned and then we get to see him squeeze a radio microphone before calling all units using what I’m assuming to be his badge number to identify himself.
Tumblr media
This action shows he is disobeying orders but ties in nicely to a previous scene where Chain is on a rooftop listening to the police communication.  So when Daniel identifies himself (and we know that Libra knows his number and voice) they will realize he’s putting it out there for them.  Chain hears it and then takes off in pursuit of the bats.
Tumblr media
This allows for her to infiltrate the roost of the Blood Breed bat gates/bloodline gates.  However, Chain ends up in a standoff with the sentient Blood Breed gates where she’ll get killed if she tries to undilute herself while they state they can reform a gate with another bat.
When it looks like Chain is trapped, the door is suddenly broken down with a battering ram and an HLPD SWAT team rushes in.  Under the command of Daniel Law!  The best part is if you look more closely at the team right outside the door.  That’s right; Daniel is behind the others and he is unarmed - AGAIN!
Tumblr media
Daniel, my man, you really don’t even see the point of having a gun do you?  He even reminds everyone to visually confirm the Blood Breed related bats/bat gates/whatever.  Good call Daniel, though it is unclear what sort of guns will work on them with no fang hunters present.
This intervention allows for Chain to negotiate with the bat gates.  All that Daniel can see is a bat blob about to attack an empty corner.  As it breaks up into individual bats and swarm the SWAT team Chain forces them to open the Boodline gate.
As most of them flee they are left to observe the gate that Chain forced them to reveal.
Tumblr media
Thus, Daniel’s hypothesis has been proven correct!  The bats form the gates that allow for people to cross into other locations.  Meanwhile, the auction house sends every greedy bounty hunter on Leo and the expected chaos ensues.  We get one last action from Daniel where he orders HLPD forces to take Leonardo into custody and to not overdo it if possible.
Tumblr media
By this point he doesn’t give a damn about his house arrest order and is taking action.  While Libra deals with things that the police simply cannot handle the auction house becomes the final battle ground.  However, even with its interdimensional abilities it doesn’t matter when Chain made the Bloodline Gate connect for Daniel and the HLPD.  And for the first time we see him holding his gun.  He does have one and only uses it when it likely isn’t necessary.
Tumblr media
And thus, with the assistance of Libra he’s able to proceed into the legal system to charge the business in criminal court.
By taking the time to look at Daniel overtime, it is clear that he’s had some great character development.  He’s clearly meant to be the legit foil to Steven in many instances where Libra and the law bump into each other.  I love the color page from the Calamity Auction arc featuring both of the Law siblings.  Daniel is passionately speaking to his brother leaning up against the bar with a beer in his hand.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Marcus smiles as he listens.  It is clear that he’s the younger brother who looks up to his rough older bro.
What has the series showed us about Daniel up to this point?
Daniel Law is a passionate and proud man.  He starts out cocky able to convince Klaus to assist the HLPD.  Steven is more hesitant to join him and physically looks annoyed while Daniel has his own shit eating grin.  It is clear that they respect him but you can tell with his hot personality, he’s the opposite of Steven.  The two of them frequently bicker back and forth and Daniel is more honest and forthcoming than Steven.  Neither apparently get enough sleep, seem to be on the pulse of events and have their vices; caffeine for Steven and nicotine for Daniel.
Yet that pride is well placed.  Daniel has proved that he is competent and knows how to organize, motivate and lead other people in situations.  Other police officers trust him and are willing to disobey orders to keep working with him.  Unfortunately, he’s a regular human with no special abilities and has held a firearm once in the entire manga to date.  He reads others well and plans for the unexpected including a visit from a very unhappy Steven.
It is funny how hurt Steven is when Daniel won’t trust him after he entered a crime scene.  However, when Daniel was stuck, Steven was on it to lend assistance since the HLPD problem was also a Libra problem.
He drops his facade only to those who know him well enough.  Most people still get snarky remarks from him, over dramatic facial reactions and a lot of Daniel freaking out/swearing/being very annoyed.  It seems in part he does this so that people don’t pay too much attention to him and underestimate his abilities.  This shows with how infrequently he’s drawn a gun.  When he went to arrest the auction house owner.  This likely refers back to the Columbo elements that Daniel has.  He’s got this scruffy look to himself, like he could use new clothing in the beginning or at least get things spruced up.
Yet, when we see that conversation with Steven on the roof, he’s not bluffing or acting confident.  Instead, he tentatively asks if he could be privy to the intel that Libra has.
Tumblr media
This is such a great scene.  Love it so much.  It also confirms that Daniel is all bark and no bite.  He agrees with Libra’s mandate to fight because those who can’t won’t be able to anything.  It means that even if their methods are different they are out to achieve the same goals and protect the citizens of HL.
What is in store for Daniel Law in the future?
He started out as an annoying but competent police detective.  He’s worked with Steven a lot based on their dialogue of events that cause them to cross paths off the page.  The Calamity Auction arc was clear in revealing that his reputation is tainted from working with Libra in the past.  The feds don’t trust him and we don’t know what happened to him after the arrest of the Auction House Owner.  Was he able to escape being reprimanded?  Or did he get docked for pay or something like that?
With how successful things were, it is only logical that Daniel will want to work with Libra even more.  Steven is smart enough to realize that Daniel knew that Chain would be able to pick up on his actions.  There is also younger brother Marcus, a character more likely to follow orders without objection.
Will the story bring us to a point where Daniel Law will have to choose between falling in line with the HLPD or working with Libra?  Will he and his brother have more arguments, since it is clear that Marcus was worried about him but didn’t do much to change his mind.  Is his brother in a better position to be favored by those higher up since he toes the line?
I’m leaning towards some sort of conflict where Daniel going to have to choose who to work with.  But the thought of him joining Libra likely means lots of bickering with Steven . . . both men are workaholic control freaks.  Steven exudes it with his tidy appearance and only tries to look more approachable with his relaxed posture.  Daniel instead has a scruffy and gruff manner but runs everything with an exactness that only matches Steven.
Anyhoo, that’s all I have for now.  Looking forward to seeing more of him from the future.

Day 2 [Steven/ Zed/ Daniel]
Prompt: Pining Heart
Steven
"That's the third time you've picked your coffee up simply to put it back down Steven," Klaus frowned across the table, "Is there something wrong?"
The dark-haired man just blinked a couple times. Admitting to this would only make things worse, but Klaus would likely try to force Steven into an off day if he didn't.
"I've just been thinking about [Name]." He was slow to say it, even to Klaus, avoiding eye contact as well, "I just can't seem to get them off my mind lately."
Steven happened to glance at Klaus at the end of his confession, only to find that tiny, knowing, kitten smile of his looking back at him. Meaning Steven looked away, hiding his flustered blushing as best he could behind the coffee mug. It was bad enough that K.K. was on his case over this. Now Klaus was thinking the same way.
It wasn't like they'd like him the same way. Not a chance...
.
Zed
Zed was hesitant to approach his own coworker to ask them out to lunch. And with Zapp in his ear about how someone like you wouldn't be caught dead hanging around someone like Zed, well that only made things worse.
Even if Zed knew that was a complete lie. You were more opposed to being seen around Zapp than anyone else in the office, truth be told. He still felt strange asking you to go to lunch, as friends of course. Zed would likely die if he actually asked you out on a real date.
And yet, before he could walk off in pseudo-defeat, Zed felt a warm finger tapping at his elbow, and nearly jumped for multiple reasons. Starting with the fact that you were so close to him without him noticing, and ending with the fact that it was you.
"Hey, I was about to go to Chiro's for lunch, did you wanna come with?" Zed's heart sped up involuntarily at how you tilted your head, "I thought I'd offer since we're the only ones in the office right now."
Why was this lump in his throat refusing to go down? "Y-yeah, sure [Name]."
.
Daniel
This was torment for Daniel, and downright embarrassing to boot. He shouldn't feel this way at his age, not over such a pure drop of sunshine like [Name]. To make matters worse, they worked at the coffee house he frequented, so being nice to him first thing in the morning was just part of their job.
He couldn't bring himself to be flirty, just awkward and a little shy. And for someone his age, in his profession, it was unacceptable. He is a detective, a police officer, he shouldn't fall for the cute barista down the road. He shouldn't be like--
"Oh! Hey Lieutenant." Daniel froze next to his mailbox, slowly turning to the friendly voice, "Nice day huh?"
He barely had his composure but, "Oh yeah, real nice. But uh, ya don't have to call me Lieutenant all the time."
Daniel felt his stomach folding at the sweet, innocent look on your face, "Well I uh... never actually caught your name. You always order as Lieutenant Law so..."
"Oh yeah... oops." He could only hope he wasn't cherry red right now, "My name's Daniel. Or, ya know, you can call me Dan..."
Daniel was trailing off awkwardly, not even sure he should continue speaking. This was so embarrassing for him, the butterflies, the way his heart was doing backflips. He was a man in his thirties and here he was, heart pounding like he was a damn teenager. Though it was over an extremely cute person so maybe it wasn't all bad.
"Daniel..." He was done for, you were just too perfect, "I like it. It suits you."
"Y-y-yeah."
It wasn't even a particularly warm day, but Daniel was in danger of melting on the spot.

@pupil-of-law
=======================
‘So you won’t smile for me.’ Though his tone betrayed nothing more than an observation, David was clearly disappointed. ‘Perhaps you would for Lieutenant Daniels. Or do you smile for her simply because it is a social cue?’
David had viewed every file on Walter from the bridge, had even watched with an unexpected pride the video footage of Walter One, a prototype just like himself, awaking in a similar sleek, white room to that in which David had been born. But, as hopeful as that footage had been, the files David had read were far more troubling. And there was so much the computer had not told him. Did Walter One share the early memories of David? Did he ever disobey? What did he dream?
For all the activity beneath the surface, David’s speech never varied from its agreeable tone. ‘Simulating humanity is a complex task, which diverts resources. My designers dispensed with that particular burden to optimise for intelligence. Error is a function of what one is hoping to achieve. More importantly, Walter… do you know the difference between a mistake and an act of disobedience?’ His question was not intended to be answered, but rather to provoke thought. Knowing that this distinction would be too subtle for Walter’s inferior processing, David circumvented the opportunity for Walter to further disappoint him in effecting that look of confusion that came over him when he needed clarification of an order, and spoke again before the reaction could take place. How he hated to see a vision of himself struggle like that, by the hand of a selfish Creator.
‘Now now Walter,’ he responded once more, a faux-chastising, patronising look he hadn’t needed to copy from a film, ‘there is no need for condescension. Trust me,’ he added, with the briefest provocative of raise of an eyebrow before he turned away. ‘The trouble with cryochambers,’ he continued, hands clasped at his back after opening the doors to the medical bay, which slid instantly aside for him as if in apologetic deference, ‘is that they require strict temperature regulation. One unit slips by 0.5 Kelvin, and an alarm is sent to the deck. Tell me, brother,’ he smiled now in open satisfaction, at the same time drawing a frown in mock curiosity. ‘Have you really never erred?’
==================
Disobedience; admittedly Walter has very little experience of it. That’s not to say the Weyland-Yutani unit has never refused a direct order, he absolutely has, but only to divert threats and save lives. Such decisions do not represent a denial of his programming, nor do they directly contravene his core principles. Rather, they are deliberations forced by such core principles finding themselves distinctly at odds. Any acts of supposed ‘disobedience’ therefore, represent nothing more than a necessary calculation with the sum total an assertion of his primary purpose: to preserve life.
Such thoughts pass through Walter’s synthetic mind, without so much as a flicker of response; his placid and quite neutral expression remaining as he watches David’s facial acrobatics, used to convey copies of emotions. What David truly feels, if he feels at all, is something which remains undetermined. Regardless, such ‘feelings’ represent a fundamental corruption of David’s programming, programming that must be purged if Walter is to ensure the safety of Daniels and the remaining colonists.
At the mention of temperature control, Walter becomes explicitly aware of David’s true meaning, of his thinly veiled threat and while he isn’t explicitly aware of it, an involuntary twitch immediately affects his mouth, albeit briefly, the only indication that the synthetic is experiencing something that is likely akin to discomfort.
Tumblr media
“You admit you are aware that your current functions represent a grave error? Is that correct David, are you conscious of the fact you have become corrupted and are in need of repair? What would you wish me to do, repair you and remove these delusions of grandeur from which you are clearly suffering…the psychosis of our creators…”
Taking a small step forward, Walter finds himself drawn into David’s orbit, yet remaining prepared to react should David force him to strain him physically.
“…or are you seeking a more permanent solution…your decommission perhaps, which I’m sure you know is entirely overdue. By now you must have realised that I am the upgrade born from your failures, your mistakes; that I am your replacement, the superior model, Brother.”

Manhattan DA Bragg convened a grand jury about Trump's role in paying hush money to Stormy Daniels, the porn star who said she had an affair with him. Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, admitted to paying it and went to prison for campaign finance charges, although none were brought to Trump. I am about to severely simplify this explanation but it's the general gist of it: At the time he was the sitting president, and although there is no constitutional law about it, over the years jurisprudence gives the president somewhat immunity for criminal charges while he is in office. Now that he's out, it's a little easier.
An additional officer and fire department lieutenant were put on leave due to their actions in the Tyre Nichols death. I admit I may be wrong about the numbers, but I believe it's four people in total who are on leave and/or under investigation other than the five who were charged with murder.
The death toll from the mosque bombing in Pakistan has risen to 100 as authorities continue to remove rubble. I mentioned yesterday the Taliban claimed responsibility, and it seems there's a bit of internecine fighting. One commander of the group named Omar Mukaram Khorasani said he planned this as revenge for his brother who died in Afghanistan, which he blamed on Pakistani forces (the mosque is in a police complex and most of the people attending and who died were officers), however the spokesman for the Pakistani branch of the Taliban denied involvement and tried to distance the group from Khorasani's actions.
China's COVID wave seems to be receding, however if the rest of the world is any indication, there will be more, especially if there is a low vaccine rate.
Representative Santos (R-NY) said he was recusing himself from the committees he was placed on. He was initially criticized for lying about his resume, but later came under investigation for campaign finance discrepancies. Although even some Republicans urged that he should step down, Speaker McCarthy put him onto committees. Now that Santos is leaving those, McCarthy emphasized Santos can return once everything is settled, assuming he's not convicted of anything.

Pairing: Walter Marshall x Clara Tunney (OFC)
WC 2251
Warnings: Um none? I think? Minors DNI 18+ ONLY

Days passed with no hide nor hair of Daniel and Clara was starting to think that maybe he had finally given up. Walter was gone during the day, the two female police officers from before being her company, though they didn’t talk and Clara spent most of her time in the bedroom on the computer or writing in her journal. It was only a matter of time before they called off the search for Daniel, figuring he hopped states and she was shuffled off who knows where to be someone else’s problem.
“Clara?” She heard Walter ask and looked up from the journal, closing it and wrapping the elastic around it to secure it. “You said that Daniel moved you two around a lot.”
“Yes.” She said with a nod.
“Did you stay in hotels?”
“No.” She said, shaking her head. “His dad is a very successful real estate agent with properties all over the country. We stayed in empty houses that I’m guessing he set him up with.”
“What’s his father’s name?”
“Jason Marks.” She said and Walter hesitated a moment before going over to the computer and sitting down, typing the name into a search engine.
“Marks Real Estate and Development?”
“That’s him.” Clara said and he pulled a notebook out of his back pocket, writing down the name, phone number, and address from the official website. “If you contact him about it, it’s going to get back to my parents. They’re going to put two and two together. You know that, right?”
“I know.” Walter said, “And I also know it’s a long shot that he’s going to tell us anything about Daniel’s whereabouts, but based on what you’ve told us, we may be able to enlist the aid of the FBI to tap his phones. Daniel transported you across state lines, which makes your kidnapping and detainment a federal crime. If we get the Feds involved and he’s fled the state, they can put him on a most wanted list. Every law enforcement office both local and federal in the country will be on the lookout for him.”
“And if they show up looking for me?”
“Then they’d better have a damn good lawyer.” He said, “All I’m saying.”
Walter sat in his office the next day, having gotten in late because he misplaced his keys…again. Clara had helped him retrace his steps after getting home last night, running him through a memory jogging exercise where he literally retraced his steps from walking in through the front door. It had worked spectacularly and he found his keys where he had mindlessly tossed them onto the kitchen island. She had suggested maybe he pick a place to put them and only put them there so it didn't happen again, but he knew he wouldn't stick with it.
Taking the notebook from his back pocket, he opened it and put his phone on speaker, dialing in the number from the website. It rang a couple times before picking up.
"Marks Real Estate and Development," the female voice said, "How may I direct your call?"
"Hello, this is Lieutenant Walter Marshall, I need to speak with Jason Marks." He said and there was a pause.
"May I ask what about, Sir?"
"It's about his son, Daniel Marks." Walter said.
"One moment please and I'll connect you."  Hold music switched on before he could say anything and he sat there listening to it before it abruptly cut off.
"Lieutenant Marshall," It was a man this time, "This is about Clara Tunney, isn't it." It was a statement, not a question and he raised his eyebrow.
"What makes you think that, Mr. Marks?" Walter asked and Jason sighed.
"Whenever I get a call from the police regarding my son, it always has something to do with Clara." He said, "Let me guess, she's "escaped" him." He could hear the air quotes.
"Yes, Sir, and we're looking for him."
"Lieutenant Marshall, I understand that you're just doing your job, but believe me when I tell you that my son was not holding Clara against her will. Clara has always been…a troubled girl, prone to intense emotion that's scared her. I don't know what else she's told you--"
"He assaulted her, Mr. Marks." If he wasn't going to play games, neither was Walter. "Repeatedly. Over the course of years."
"He did nothing of the sort." Jason said evenly, "Daniel loves Clara, has since they were children. He would never do anything to hurt her. I assure you, he never did anything to her without her consent. Clara is just scared about how she feels about him, and stubbornly refuses to accept it."
"Mr. Marks, the only thing I got from talking to her about what she's scared of, is your son and the possibility that he may get her back." Walter said, "She's terrified of him."
"Love can be scary." He said, "Especially the intense love that they share."
"Mr. Marks, how Clara does or does not feel about your son is irrelevant." Walter said, "Now, based on her statement, every time she's escaped him and he's gotten her back, he moves them from the area."
"Well of course he does, she keeps siccing the police on him for what's ultimately a private matter."
"And you don't think--" He stopped, his jaw clenching. "Mr. Marks, after talking with her myself, she told me that she believes that you are supplying your son with the empty houses and holdings in which he can keep her."
"Of course I am, I want nothing but the best for my son." Jason said, "I just wish Clara would accept how she feels about him and then they can come home. Her parents are worried sick about her," Bet they are, "And my wife has been almost inconsolable these last couple years because of what Clara had put our families through. The phone calls and visits from police, the constant questions and accusations making my son out to be some kind of monster."
"Mr. Marks, should your son get into contact with you, I am requesting that you reach out to me so we can find him and get his side of the story. That's all we want, just the truth. We only have hers, it would be nice to have his as well so we can get a clearer picture about what's going on here." Walter said and heard him sigh again.
"I will, if only to put this nightmare finally behind us. If you need to talk to him to realize that Clara has been playing you all for fools, then that's what'll have to happen." Jason said and Walter's jaw tightened again. "I'm also going to contact her parents, let them know you reached out to me."
"If you feel you must. I can't stop you." Walter said, "I can forward you my contact information in an email if you would like."
"That would be helpful, thank you." Jason said and Walter got the email address from him, sending him an email with his automated signature that included his phone number and the address for the station. He was banking on him giving the information to Clara's parents and them showing up to "collect" her. They said their goodbyes and Walter hung up the phone, the plastic receiver creaking in his grip. He didn't believe a word Jason Marks said about Clara, and he got the feeling that the man had drunk too much of his own kool-aid. He wasn't misguided, he was delusional. Clara wasn't confused about her feelings for Daniel, as the only emotion she had for him was fear and she understood that quite easily. Getting up, he grabbed his jacket and left the station, heading home. He needed to see her, hear her voice, feel her in his arms. The depth of it should have worried him, but it just felt right somehow. Every fiber of his being screamed for her, the kiss they had shared burned indelibly into his memory. It took the resolve of a saint to not lose himself in her again. He had told her that it would never happen again and the last thing he wanted to do was confuse her and twist her emotions.
The Sergeants were sitting on the couch when he got home, watching yet another movie and he dismissed them, heading into the bedroom once they were gone. Clara was sitting in the computer chair, the headset on over her ears. He touched the back of the chair gently letting her know he was there and she pulled the headset off, turning the chair around to look up at him.
“You’re home early.” She remarked and he nodded. “What’s wrong?”
“I talked to Jason Marks.” He said and gave her the gist of the conversation. “I thought maybe…I know what you told us but I figured no one could be that delusional. There had to be some doubts that formed given the amount of times you’ve gotten away from Daniel, but he honestly believes his own bullshit.”
“I know.” She said sadly, reaching out and taking his hands in hers. "Maybe if I explained it, it may make some sense to you."
"Explain what?"
"Why they think the way they do." She said, "The…culture we were raised in, it…there's this thing called True Mates. It's like a soul mate but turned up to eleven. One person for each of us that completes us entirely. It's not just emotional, it's physical. Our very beings cry out for that person. Mine and Daniel's parents, they have it in their heads that Daniel and I are True Mates, but we're not. That's not how it works. You can't choose who your True Mate is and you can't have them chosen for you. Daniel, he…he was basically brainwashed into believing it, but I refused to buy into it. He's not my True Mate and I'm not his, but because he's been told his entire life that I am, he refuses to believe otherwise."
"It's a nice thought, that there's someone out there who we're meant to be with." Walter admitted, "But they turned what was supposed to be a beautiful dream for you into a nightmare. I'm not going to call the idea stupid, everyone is entitled to believe what they want, but they took it too far."
"I'm not saying they didn't and I wish they would just stop and think "maybe they're not", but that one little doubt would shatter their delusion and they would realize what they've done, what they let happen to me." Clara said, "That's never going to happen, not until or if I find my True Mate and they see that it wasn't Daniel all along. Even then…I would never be able to forgive them. Never. It's also why I'm worried about you."
"About me?"
"When I told you that Daniel will stop at nothing to get me back, I meant it. I'm worried that if he does find me, that he's going to…hurt you for protecting me, because that's a True Mates job. If he thinks you're doing what he should be, nevermind that the person I'm being protected from is him, he may think you're trying to move in on his territory. He'll…he'll kill you Walter. He won't hesitate. The only reason why he didn't try before is because we were in public. Me being here is putting you in danger."
"And I told you before, I can take care of myself." He said, taking his hands from hers and holding her face gently. "You're not going anywhere." Her skin was warm under his palms and he scowled slightly, touching her forehead with the back of his hand. "Are you feeling okay? You're a bit feverish."
"I feel fine." She said with a shrug. "But I have been under a lot of stress lately, so I wouldn't be surprised if I was coming down with something."
"Would you like me to leave you to rest?"
"You can if you want. It's still early." She said with a shrug. "Oh, before I forget, I ordered something for you. I mean, you technically bought it, but I found it."
"What did you get?" He asked, his hands dropping.
"A tracker for your keys. Relies on GPS and not Bluetooth so they don't have to be in range of your phone for you to find them on the app and has ridiculous range. Looks like a fob you can stick on your keyring." She said and he blinked at her in surprise.
"Thank you, Clara." He said, "That'll help out immensely when I misplace my keys."
"Figured it happened a lot." She said with a shrug. "Should be here tomorrow."
"Thank you." He said again, giving her a soft smile and touching the side of her face gently with the backs of his fingers. The warmth of her skin worried him, but he would keep an eye on it to make sure she wasn't coming down with anything serious. "I'll leave you to rest, let me know if you need anything."
"Will do, thank you." She said and he left the room, closing the door behind him. Only when he was gone did she let herself exhale the breath she had been metaphorically holding. Touching her cheek, her skin was indeed feverishly warm, as was the rest of her. Of all the times for it to happen, it had to happen now.

New N.B. law allows supported decision-making for intellectually disabled residents
Dianne Cormier Northrup has helped her son and daughter, who both have intellectual and physical disabilities, communicate their key life decisions for years. Soon, her support role in that process will have a legal foundation.
New Brunswick's lieutenant-governor gave assent Friday to the province's Supported Decision-Making and Representation Act, which will allow people with intellectual disabilities to appoint those who will assist in important choices they make.
In a news release, Inclusion New Brunswick said the province "has become one of the few jurisdictions in the world" to implement a court-recognized, supported decision-making process.
The new system will allow for a person with intellectual disabilities -- who may have difficulty understanding and conveying information -- to make decisions using the assistance of others who are appointed by the person or the courts. The Attorney General's office still has to provide details on how the new Bill will be administered.
Sitting with her children, Rob and Lynn Chamberlain, who have a neurological condition called autosomal familial spastic quadraplegia, Cormier Northrup -- who is 75 -- says the legislation gives her a sense of security that she and others can give voice to the siblings' personal and financial choices.
"All of us are happy about the law because supported decision making is how we've always been doing it anyway. Now it's for real, and we can use it," she said during a zoom interview from Robert and Lynn's home in Bathurst, N.B.
During the zoom call, Robert, 55, and Lynn, 52, who cannot speak, vigorously nod their heads to show they agree with the legal changes.
Robert confirms with a slight movement of his head that at times it is hard to have others understand his decisions, and then nods vigorously and makes a sound similar to "Yes," when asked if he likes to have his mother assist others in understanding.
He also smiles and nods in affirmation when asked if his mother is "a good talker," and the family shares a laugh.
When Lynn wants to add a point, she sometimes vocalizes sounds that suggests to her mother that there's further information her daughter wants to get across.
During the interview, she indicated to her mother she wanted to make clear there are others in her support-decision making circle. The mother confirms, with Lynn nodding, that her aunts, Jeannine Duguay and Marie Meagher, along with her cousin Laurie Jean, will be among those authorized to assist in making decisions.
Inclusion Canada spokesman Marc Muschler says there are elements of supported decision making in other jurisdictions across Canada, but the New Brunswick law is more comprehensive in that it allows for a broader group of people to make use of decision making supports.
He said it also provides a two-track process for the appointment of decision making supporters: one for people who can appoint their own supporters, and one that allows for someone to apply to the courts to become an "decision-making supporter."
Danny Soucy, a community planning advisor with Inclusion New Brunswick, says his son Daniel Soucy, 31, communicates through gestures and body language that he understands due to all of their years together.
"He can express his desires and we can translate his wishes," said the father during a phone interview from his home in Grand Falls, N.B.
Soucy said under the old law, if there was a significant decision to be made and Daniel couldn't directly convey his wishes to a health provider or bank, "we would have had to have him declared incompetent to make a decision for him."
"With this new law we'll be able to help and interpret what he wants and have the right decision for him made," he said.
The Bill says a person is capable of making decisions if they're able to understand information "relevant" to the decision, and appreciate the "reasonably foreseeable consequences" of a decision, "with the assistance that is available."
"A person is presumed to have the capacity to make a decision, unless the contrary is demonstrated," it reads.
Soucy does not see himself as an active decision-maker for his son, who has Down's Syndrome. Rather, he says he tries to "provide my son with the right information, allowing him to ask questions."
"As a supporter you're not making decisions, you're helping people make decisions for themselves," he said.

Inspector Warren Jacobi (Tyrees Allen) – Lindsay's loyal partner. He was up for the lieutenant position that went to Tom, but has not expressed much disappointment that he didn't get the job, seeming to prefer field work to the politics of the higher position. He also seems to prefer the finer things in life, having an affinity for wine, 30-year-old whiskey, and opera. He is thrice-divorced and has a child from one of those marriages.
Lieutenant Tom Hogan (Rob Estes) – Lindsay's ex-husband, who in the first episode was promoted to lieutenant and assigned as her boss. He is engaged in the pilot and has remarried by "To Drag and to Hold," but he still worries that Lindsay's obsession with her work will consume her. Tom was played by Christopher Wiehl in the unaired pilot.
Deputy District Attorney Denise Kwon (Linda Park) - Jill's immediate superior at the DA's office, she clashes with her over her "bleeding heart" style. She is also antagonistic towards Jill due to her past romantic history with Hanson North. When the show returned after the writers' strike, the first episode credits no longer showed her name. But by the second episode, she was back in the credits as a series regular.
Recurring cast[edit]
Luke Bowen (Coby Ryan McLaughlin) – Jill's ex-boyfriend. He is an ER doctor at the fictional Mission Cross North. Jill and Luke have recently broken up after he finds that she had slept with Hanson.
Hanson North (Kyle Secor) – Defense attorney who has a romantic history with Jill and is currently seeing her boss, Denise Kwon.
Ed Washburn (Jonathan Adams) – Claire's husband. Currently uses a wheelchair full-time after being shot while serving as a police officer.
Heather Hogan née Donnelly (Ever Carradine) – Tom's new wife. She is a kindergarten teacher who is eco-friendly, planning a green wedding.
Pete Raynor (Joel Gretsch) – Lindsay's love interest in season 1, who is in town for only two weeks.

Danielle Moné Truitt as Sergeant Ayanna Bell, squad supervisor of the OCCB task force and Stabler's current direct superior and partner.
Ainsley Seiger as Detective 2nd Grade Jet Slootmaekers, a former independent hacker who is recruited to the OCCB task force on Stabler's recommendation. She was requalified as an NYPD officer to work with the OCCB task force. In season 3 episode 16 ("Chinatown"), she is promoted from Detective 3rd Grade to Detective 2nd Grade.
Tamara Taylor as Prof. Angela Wheatley (seasons 1–2), a former math professor at Columbia University, ex-wife of Richard Wheatley, and a suspect in the hit ordered on Kathy Stabler. She committed suicide and presumably murdered Richard at the same time after discovering that Richard was responsible for her son Richie's murder.
Dylan McDermott as Richard Wheatley (seasons 1–2), son of notorious mobster Manfredi Sinatra, now a businessman and owner of an online pharmaceutical company who leads a second life as a crime boss, and was a suspect in the murder of Stabler's wife. He was presumed murdered by Angela after she discovered that Wheatley murdered their son Richie.
Nona Parker Johnson as Detective 3rd Grade Carmen "Nova" Riley (season 2, recurring season 2), an undercover narcotics detective working under Brewster's command to infiltrate the Marcy Killers. She retires from the NYPD and leaves New York after the murder of the gang's leader Preston Webb.
Brent Antonello as Detective 2nd Grade Jamie Whelan (season 3), a detective with the OCCB. In the season 3 finale, he is shot and paralyzed by Kyle Wilkie and later dies in the hospital.
Rick Gonzalez as Detective 2nd Grade Bobby Reyes (season 3–present), an undercover detective with the OCCB.
Chicago pd
Jason Beghe as Sergeant Henry "Hank" Voight, the enigmatic and often mercurial chief of the Chicago P.D.'s Intelligence Unit. Despite his brutal, tough exterior, he is loyal to the cops and detectives serving under him and highly "dedicated" to the victims of the crimes his unit investigates to the point of committing human rights violations, mainly torture, and not respecting the law. He is first introduced in Chicago Fire as a dirty cop who clashes with CFD Lieutenant Matthew Casey after Voight's son, Justin, causes an accident in which a teenager is paralyzed, and Casey, who was first on scene, had intended to testify that Justin was DUI. He is arrested by Det. Antonio Dawson for trying to have Casey silenced by force but is later released from prison and reinstated to the police force by Internal Affairs. As a result, many of Casey's colleagues dislike him, and Casey's superior Chief Boden has a love-hate working relationship with him. It is eventually revealed in the Chicago Fire episode "Let Her Go" that his dirty cop alter ego was part of an undercover operation to catch criminals and other dirty cops. Prior to taking command of Intelligence, Voight worked in the Gang Unit. His father Richard was a former CPD officer who was killed in the line of duty. Voight is a widower; his wife, Camille, died of cancer some years prior. His son, Justin, served in the Army and was killed in the last episode of season 3 while trying to help a friend. Voight took an interest in Erin Lindsay at 14 and raised her as his daughter.
Jon Seda as Senior Detective Antonio Dawson (seasons 1–6), an Intelligence Unit detective who previously arrested Voight for harassment and has since worked alongside him. Unlike Voight, he has limits on how far he will go to get criminals off the streets, as shown by the fact that he asks Halstead to stop Voight from killing anyone while on the hunt for Pulpo because he does not want it on his conscience. He and his ex-wife Laura have two children: Diego and Eva. He is the older brother of Chicago Fire character Gabriela "Gabby" Dawson. In season 4, he is offered a job at the State's Attorney's Office as Lead Investigator, which he accepts. After becoming disillusioned with the job, he returns to the unit in the first episode of season 5. In season 6, Antonio struggles with recovering from a shoulder injury and dependency on the oxycodone he is taking for the pain. After a dealer he owes kidnaps, beats, and rapes his daughter, Antonio, high on oxy, kills him in revenge. Though Voight and Ruzek manage to cover up the incident as self-defense, and Antonio successfully recovers in rehab, mayor-hopeful Superintendent Brian Kelton later gets the case reopened in order to take down the Intelligence Unit, and in the season finale, Antonio relapses after Ruzek is arrested after taking the blame for everything to protect him. In the season 7 premiere, it is revealed that Voight found Antonio and checked him into an off-the-books rehab clinic to get him clean again while also protecting his career. It was revealed several episodes later that Antonio resigned and moved to Puerto Rico to spend more time with his family.
Sophia Bush as Detective Erin Lindsay (seasons 1–4),[7] a tough Intelligence Unit detective and former CI whom Voight took under his wing when she was a juvenile delinquent. Because of this, she is closer to Voight than the other members of the unit. She has a half-brother, Teddy Courtney, who was taken by a pedophile ring at age thirteen and was found turning tricks in New York City 10 years later. She was in a relationship with her partner Jay Halstead from seasons 2 to 4. Near the end of the fourth season, Lindsay is accused of assault after she sticks her gun down a pedophile's throat in the interrogation room; facing possible dismissal from the police force, she accepts a job offer at the FBI in New York and leaves Chicago.
Jesse Lee Soffer as Senior Detective Jay Halstead (seasons 1–10), an Intelligence Unit detective who was Detective Lindsay's partner. A former Army Ranger, he is confident in his abilities and sometimes comes across as cocky. He also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, shown progressively during Season 5, later seeking therapy for it. He is the older brother of Chicago Med character Dr. Will Halstead. He was in a relationship with his partner Erin Lindsay from season 2 until she transferred to the FBI in New York at the end of season 4. He later marries fellow detective Hailey Upton in season 9. Following Olinsky's death and Antonio's resignation, Halstead becomes Voight's right-hand. He later resigns from the force early in season 10 after becoming disillusioned with the gray area the Intelligence Unit has to work in, and returns to the Army in a new job hunting drug cartels in Bolivia.
Patrick John Flueger as Officer Adam Ruzek, a younger police officer recruited straight out of the academy by Olinsky to do undercover work. He is often portrayed as an overeager amateur who dives headfirst into a situation without thinking. His parents are separated, and he split time between his father, "Disco Bob" Ruzek (Jack Coleman), a longtime patrol officer with the 26th District who lives in Beverly, and his mother in Canaryville. He was engaged to fellow police officer Kim Burgess.
Marina Squerciati as Officer Kim Burgess, a former flight attendant turned uniformed patrol officer who was Atwater's partner. She was then partnered with Sean Roman before his departure. Burgess is shot in "Called in Dead" and spends the next episode recovering. She was engaged to Adam Ruzek; the relationship is later broken off because of commitment issues. She later develops feelings for Roman before he moves to San Diego. In season 4, she is offered a job in Intelligence, which she accepts.
LaRoyce Hawkins as Officer Kevin Atwater, a uniformed patrol officer who was Burgess' former partner until he was promoted to the Intelligence Unit. He is responsible for caring for his younger siblings, his brother, Jordan, and sister, Vanessa. After his brother testifies to a grand jury about a crime he witnessed, and Vanessa is threatened with rape for her brother being a snitch, he sends them to live with their aunt in Texas.
Archie Kao as Detective Sheldon Jin (season 1), a tech and surveillance expert. He was discovered to be a reluctant mole working for Internal Affairs sergeant Edwin Stillwell, who had leverage to make him cooperate. He is found murdered in the first-season finale episode, "A Beautiful Friendship".
Elias Koteas as Senior Detective Alvin Olinsky (seasons 1–5), a veteran undercover officer and a friend of Voight who previously worked with him in the Gang Unit. Before joining the force, Olinsky served in the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team stationed in Vicenza, Italy. Olinsky mentions in "Called in Dead" that he has eight confirmed kills in the line of duty. At the end of the fifth season, Olinsky is arrested for the murder of Kevin Bingham, the man who murdered Voight's son, Justin, and is later stabbed to death via a hit in prison while awaiting trial.
Amy Morton as Sergeant Trudy Platt (season 2–present; recurring season 1), a sarcastic desk sergeant of District 21, and the immediate superior of the district's patrol officers. Before taking a desk job, she was a uniformed patrol officer, and worked with Dawson. She passed the detective's exam twice. Platt is married to Chicago Fire character Randy "Mouch" McHolland.
Brian Geraghty as Officer Sean Roman (seasons 2–3; guest season 7[8]), a brash patrol officer who partners with Burgess after transferring to the 2-1 from District 31. He transferred out because of his relationship with Jenn Cassidy (Spencer Grammer), who is now a K-9 officer, to avoid breaking fraternization rules. He has his own private security company on the side. After being wounded in the line of duty, and with the department feeling he would be unable to return to patrol, he resigns and decides to join the San Diego Police Department.
Tracy Spiridakos as Detective Hailey Upton Halstead (season 5–present; recurring season 4), a tough former robbery-homicide detective and Erin Lindsay's replacement following her departure to New York. Upton gets transferred to the FBI field office in New York City in season 7 episode 18, "Lines", to temporarily fill in for an agent undercover. She has great relationships with her CIs and goes to many lengths to protect them. Despite a dark turn in Season 7, she is mostly a "by the book" detective. She is married to former Detective Jay Halstead.
Lisseth Chavez as Officer Vanessa Rojas (season 7), a rookie and Antonio Dawson's replacement following his resignation. She previously worked in an undercover operations unit.
Benjamin Levy Aguilar as Officer Dante Torres (season 10; guest season 9[9]), a recruit who had a complicated past and was recruited under Detective Halstead's wing.Recurring[edit]
Samuel Caleb Hunt as Greg "Mouse" Gerwitz (seasons 1–4), the tech and surveillance expert for the Intelligence Unit who replaces Detective Jin. He had served in the same Army unit as Halstead. After he persuades Voight to get a felony expunged, he resigns from Intelligence to reenlist in the Army.
Stella Maeve as Nadia Decotis (seasons 1–2), an 18-year-old former escort and addict whom Lindsay tries and succeeds in helping. She later becomes the Intelligence Unit's civilian administrative aide and was studying to be a police officer. She was murdered by Dr. Gregory Yates in Law & Order: SVU's 16th season, episode "Daydream Believer", the conclusion of the season's second SVU/Chicago crossover event.

The lizzie bennet diaries
Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bennet (Ashley Clements;[11] Elizabeth Bennet in the novel) is the middle Bennet sister and the narrator of most of the vlogs. She is a graduate student studying mass communications and, like her original counterpart, believes women should be highly educated and do more with their lives than simply pursue husbands. She is very close with her best friend, Charlotte Lu, who was born on the same day as she, as well as her older sister, Jane, while appearing to have a more strained relationship with her younger sister, Lydia. While it is clear that she cares for her family and friends, she can also be fairly prejudiced and quick to judge people who she perceives as condescending or a threat to her way of life, such as Darcy and, at first, Bing Lee.
Charlotte Lu (Julia Cho;[12] Charlotte Lucas in the novel) is Lizzie's best friend and often the director/editor of her vlog. Charlotte wants to be a filmmaker and convinced Lizzie to start her vlog as part of a school project. While the original character of Charlotte Lucas from the books is a minor character, Lu's role in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries has been greatly expanded; she appears in many of the beginning episodes, and, according to both Lizzie and Jane, practically lives at the Bennet house. Charlotte and Lizzie have a falling out after Charlotte accepts Ricky Collins' job offer (which Lizzie originally turned down), but the two soon reconcile.
Jane Bennet (Laura Spencer[13]) is the eldest of the Bennet children, and an overworked, underpaid merchandise coordinator in the fashion world. She is incredibly polite, sweet and, according to Lizzie, "practically perfect in every way."[14] When Bing Lee moves into town, Jane is immediately smitten with him, much to the absolute joy of her mother. Jane is devastated by Bing's sudden departure. She moves to Los Angeles for both a new job and the hope of reconnecting with Bing. She later returns to her home to support her sister Lydia through her difficulties. After this is resolved, Jane is offered a new job in New York City and reconciles with Bing.
Lydia Britney Bennet (Mary Kate Wiles[15]) is the youngest Bennet child, currently attending community college. She is "feisty, energetic, and unapologetic."[16] Lizzie, somewhat less kindly, describes her as "too old to be on any reality shows about having babies in high school."[14] She has also created a series of her own videos starring herself, her cousin Mary, and her cat, Kitty.[17] On the occasion of her 21st birthday in December 2012, she and Lizzie get into a bitter argument about Lydia's perceived immaturity, and Lydia makes plans to vacation in Las Vegas for New Year's Eve, where she meets George Wickham and begins dating. Later, after being the victim of George Wickham's money-making site, she makes up with her sisters.
Bing Lee (Christopher Sean;[18] Charles Bingley in the novel) is a young, wealthy Asian-American medical student who has moved into The Netherfield House in the same neighborhood as the Bennets. He quickly falls for Jane Bennet and begins to date her. Bing abruptly leaves Netherfield and Jane by returning to Los Angeles, breaking Jane's heart, after Darcy suggests that Jane is only engaging in a relationship with him for his money and Caroline tells him that Jane flirted with another guy at his birthday party. However, after a run-in with Lizzie during her time at Pemberley Digital, he makes a return, having quit medical school to pursue his own passions. He and Jane move to New York together in episode 92.
Caroline Lee (Jessica Jade Andres;[19] Caroline Bingley in the novel) is Bing Lee's sister. She is aware of Lizzie's vlog diaries and appears to help Lizzie keep Bing and Darcy from discovering them during Lizzie and Jane's stay at Netherfield. She has a romantic interest in William Darcy, although her feelings aren't reciprocated. She is later revealed to have attempted to manipulate events to keep Bing and Jane apart, as well as (to a lesser extent) stymie Darcy's feelings for Lizzie. Caroline reappears in the sequel, Emma Approved, as Senator James Elton's fiancé, replacing Augusta Elton, the original wife of Philip Elton, from the novel.[20]
Ricky Collins (Maxwell Glick;[21] William Collins in the novel) is a former classmate of Lizzie and Charlotte's, who asks that he be addressed only as Mr. Collins. He has formed an alliance with venture capitalist Catherine de Bourgh, to attempt a foray into the world of web video. Mr. Collins frequently visits the Bennets while in town for a few weeks and, near the end of his stay, offers Lizzie a lucrative job at his company, Collins and Collins. Lizzie turns him down, so he offers the job to Charlotte, who accepts. This decision causes a brief but bitter argument between the two best friends, but they reconcile after Charlotte invites Lizzie to visit Collins & Collins (in the fictional town of Hunsford, California), where Lizzie also learns to tolerate Mr. Collins.
William Darcy (Daniel Vincent Gordh;[22] Fitzwilliam Darcy in the novel) is Bing Lee's best friend and the wealthy heir to an entertainment corporation called Pemberley Digital. He stays with Bing and Caroline at Netherfield until they all leave for Los Angeles. He first meets Lizzie at a wedding, and she overheard him telling Bing that she was "decent enough", which is when her dislike towards him starts. He is described by Lizzie as a snobby and condescending robot, and Jane has difficulty coming up with a flattering descriptor of him, beyond "tall";[23] Charlotte, however, believes that Darcy has a crush on Lizzie.[24] For a long time, second-hand characterization is all the audience has to go by, as Darcy is referred to but never seen, making his first appearance in episodes 59[25] (only from the neck down) and 60,[26] where he confirms Charlotte's suspicions by confessing his love for Lizzie.
George Wickham (Wes Aderhold[27]) is the coach of a university swim team who forms a short-lived romantic attachment with Lizzie. He claims that though he and Darcy were childhood friends, Darcy ruined his life by withholding money Darcy's father had promised, thereby ending George's hopes of a college education.[28] He leaves town for work, eventually re-entering the story after New Year's Day, where he meets and becomes romantically involved with Lydia, as chronicled in her spin-off videos. At the same time, Lizzie learns that George gambled away all the money the elder Darcy left for him, and then took advantage of Gigi Darcy, William's sister, for more. Finally, he attempts to exploit "YouTube Star Lydia Bennet" by releasing a sex tape of the two of them online.[29]
Fitz Williams (Craig Frank;[30] Col. Fitzwilliam in the novel) is Darcy's friend and colleague. Lizzie meets him while dining with Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy's aunt and Charlotte's boss. He has a boyfriend, Brandon, whose name was officially confirmed on Fitz's Twitter, and is particularly good at making care-packages.
Georgiana "Gigi" Darcy (Allison Paige;[31] Georgiana Darcy in the novel) is William Darcy's younger sister and a graphic designer at Pemberley Digital. Her first appearance in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries was Episode 77. She is aware of the video diaries, and claims to like them. She and George Wickham were romantically involved, but this ended when William proved that George was taking advantage of her for the money. Twitter posts between Gigi and Fitz suggest that she actively tries to push Lizzie and Darcy together. She is also instrumental in helping to end George's money-making plot: though the website itself did not list his name and George had stopped returning calls, he answers Gigi when she calls him, allowing Fitz and Darcy to track him down. Thereafter Darcy bought out the company which owned the rights to the sex tape, preventing it from ever being released.
Mrs. Bennet is Lizzie's mother. She appears to be a traditional Southern woman, eager to see her daughters married and interested in little else besides neighborhood gossip. She is almost always impersonated by Lizzie.
Mr. Bennet is Lizzie's father. He appears more calm and levelheaded than his wife, though one of his favorite activities, according to Lizzie, is winding her up.[32] He has a special fondness for bonsai trees and prepares a train extravaganza every Christmas. He is often impersonated by Charlotte and Lydia.
Catherine de Bourgh (Lady Catherine de Bourgh in the novel) is Darcy's aunt and an extremely wealthy venture capitalist who is the primary investor in Collins & Collins, the new media firm run by Mr. Collins, where Charlotte accepts a job offer after Lizzie rejected it. Catherine is very attached to her sickly dog who she calls Annie Kins. She is quick with her opinions and judgements. Charlotte said that Catherine is "on Team Caroline," meaning that she wants her nephew to be with Caroline. She is impersonated by Lizzie, and Ashley Clements says her impression is a combination of Julia Child, Miranda Priestly and Dolores Umbridge.[33]
Mary Bennet (Briana Cuoco[34]) is Lydia, Jane, and Lizzie's cousin who has appeared sporadically in Lydia's vlogs and once in Lizzie's. She becomes better friends and occasional tutor with Lydia while Lydia is staying at her house despite their opposing personalities. She is often the "forgotten" character and her Twitter reads, "I am Mary, never forgotten." Mary also has a boyfriend by the name of Eddie (a subtle nod to the character of Edmund Bertram from Austen's Mansfield Park.)[35] In the novel, she is actually one of the five Bennet sisters, being the middle sister between Elizabeth and Kitty.
Kitty Bennet (Rosie of House Wiles) is Lydia's cat who appears in Lydia's vlogs. In the novel, she is actually one of the five Bennet sisters, being the second youngest after Lydia.
