The police are not your friends
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When police kill someone, the protocol for most law enforcement agencies is to immediately inform the victim’s family. But some have a different priority: aggressively questioning family members about the victim before notifying them that their loved one was killed by the police.

It’s essential to donate to family’s who have a loved one, that the police murdered. Some of you might already know that in court even if a family WINS the amount of money sought can be deducted, by how much “percent of fault they are “responsible” for” due to something called contributory conduct.  And charges might not even be brought against the murderer! Here are some case examples
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2018/06/02/a-man-was-shot-and-killed-by-police-a-jury-gave-his-family-4/
https://nationswell.com/every-murder-is-real-victims-compensation-philadelphia/
Some families may face receiving nothing in settlements, despite being responsible for funerals, burials. That doesn’t even begin to cover therapy, time off from job, attorney and legal fees, bills that are harder to pay with one less person  in the household, especially if children are the household, medical bills if the victim initially survived, and on and on.’
What’s worse is the tactics used by law enforcement to take advantage of this!
https://www.lexipol.com/resources/blog/3-lessons-from-lawsuits-and-claims-against-police-officers/
these last lines haunt me: “The bottom line: Don’t rely on a jury, the media or the public to see a case through your eyes. We’re promised trial by a “jury of our peers,” not by a group of like-minded individuals who understand the complexities of law enforcement.”
That article was written may 22 of last year. Lexipol, literally writes police manuals and the ACLU has sued them for racial profiling. They also made the policies for South Bend Indiana, where their policies influenced a body cam being worn but not on during the death of Eric Logan.
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/south-bend-police-pete-buttigieg-lexipol_n_5e504139c5b6b82aa653167f
I’m not an expert and obviously need to do more research into this. But right now families need your help, to cover funeral costs and fighting for justice. No amount of money will give back the cherished family member they had, but funds can give their loved ones a resting place of dignity and allow families to grieve without the threat of being homeless or hungry.

Sacramento neighborhood cops may be allowed to arrest undocumented immigrants
Sacramento neighborhood cops may be allowed to arrest undocumented immigrants
Headline should read “arrest illegal aliens.” Other than that, this works for me. From Sacramento Bee: If you’re an undocumented immigrant illegal alien in the city of Sacramento, the local police are under orders not to inquire about your citizenship. The same goes in the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County patrolled by the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department. Venture outside the region’s main…

AC-a-a-a-a-B, screamed the goat
again, we see the police PR machine & a complicit press present the innocuous, bumbling barney fife ‘we’re here to protect’ trope.
the ubiquitous coverage of the screaming goat has reached an international audience [if the BBC counts in that regard].
it reminds me of the ‘ah, look! cops dance with ice cream’ which should have been ‘two scoops of fuck you.’
__
one of the more recent and disgusting examples of police PR/media collaboration has been the ‘viral’ PR: ‘Police dog in Wyandotte accused of stealing fellow officer's lunch.’
this ‘story’ originated from a facebook post by the Wyandotte PD, with an accompanying image edited to appear as a mugshot of a black police dog – named ‘Officer ICE.’
however, i found this posted on a ABC affiliate news website, on the same page as an article about Tyre Nichols’ family pleading for justice and calls for the bodycam footage to be released.
Tumblr media
__
the timing and content of these press releases is no coincidence.
on august 1 2016, within weeks after the series of murders by police of Delrawn Small, Alton Sterling and Philando Castille, the cop PR machine rolled out #copsgiveouticecream.
one particular headline — ‘these cops pranked drivers by giving them ice cream instead of tickets’ — fell under the ‘feel good’ category, much like ‘officer ice’ and case of the screaming goat.
Tumblr media
text beneath the image reads: "You can see the sense of relief when the officers explain this ‘violation’ to the anxious drivers who all got a big laugh out of it."
i can see intimidation, fear, injustice…
‘no cameras!’ — nor accountability
social media has changed the playing field in the propaganda war for policing. like in the instances of feel good news, cops only like social media when it works in their favor.
the fbi has warned about ‘cop baiting,’ ‘viral attack’ and potential liability. [Social Media and Law Enforcement: Potential Risks; leb.fbi.gov]
unsurprisingly, this particular article expresses an overarching sense of fear and need for control:
Empowered by social media, cop baiting presents a crisis for law enforcement. Questionable videos of police officers are popular on sites, such as YouTube, and can be financially rewarding to malefactors who file claims or lawsuits. For some individuals, a citation or jail time is worthwhile if a cash payoff results. Cop baiting could become so common that officers may not know whether they are facing a situation that is legitimate, staged, or exaggerated for someone else’s benefit. This puts officers’ personal and professional well-being at stake.
so strange, their fave defense for surveillance [search, et al] isn’t mentioned: ‘if you’re not doing anything wrong, why worry…’
copspeak + providing those good feels
i posted the link back in 2016, but i find it’s still relevant:
Copspeak: 7 Ways Journalists Use Police Jargon to Obscure the Truth [fair.org]
FAIR’s CopSpeak series is good for examining the media-PR symbiosis:
“The linguistic gymnastics needed to report on police violence without calling up images of police violence is a thing of semantic wonder."
privatization of public policy has helped drive much of this. [Meet the Company That Writes the Policies That Protect Cops; motherjones.com], [Police Policy For Sale; theappeal.org/].
the lexipol rabbithole can take you through an insular cop-cult[-ure] & convenient shopping for all of your militarized force needs.
‘Police Chief Magazine’ run by a 503c lobbying group, International Association of Chiefs of Police [IACP], reveals some PR tactics in ‘Media Coverage: When It Doesn’t Work Well… and When It Does’ [policechiefmagazine.org]
The Secrets to Success “It is the role of the public information office to push the positive stories to the media,” says Sergeant John Roth, Glendale Police Department’s public information officer (PIO). His office publicizes the department’s Coffee with a Cop events, as well as other newsworthy items, such as when major cases are solved. …
it is imperative to develop a rapport with media representatives. He makes a point of meeting with them and establishing relationships built on trust.
‘trust us,’ said at gunpoint…
[btw, national police week 2023 has begun]

American cities full of Lexipol
*Who are they?  None of your business.
https://www.citylab.com/equity/2019/02/private-company-lexipol-american-police-policylaw-enforcement/
Gabriel Gomez Maciel was driving to church in Spokane, Washington, in 2014, when a minivan T-boned his pickup truck. The minivan driver apologized to Gomez, called police, and told the responding officer that he was at fault. But when the officer arrived, she detained Gomez while she contacted U.S. Border Patrol to ask about his immigration status.
According to a lawsuit filed by the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project and the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington, the officer kept Gomez there for nearly 90 minutes before Border Patrol agents arrived. Gomez had committed no crime and had no criminal history, and Coleman didn’t ask him any questions about his immigration status, according to the suit. Still, he was taken into Border Patrol custody and jailed for a month.
City officials said Gomez’s detention was permitted under Spokane Police Department policy. The ACLU argued that the policy violated the Fourth Amendment’s protections from unreasonable search and seizure and the Washington state constitution. Last year, Spokane reached a settlement with Gomez and agreed to change its policies.
But identical language remains in place at law enforcement agencies across the country.
The policy was written by Lexipol, a California-based company that says it provides policies for approximately 3,400 police, fire, and correctional agencies in 35 states. It has grown rapidly over the last 15 years and saturated California, where its clients include more than 90 percent of law enforcement agencies. It’s impossible to know just how far Lexipol’s reach has spread as the company declines to provide a list of clients, saying that it is proprietary information. But according to an analysis published last year in the Texas Law Review, “although there are other private, nonprofit, and government entities that draft police policies, Lexipol is now a dominant force in police policymaking across the country.”
As a result, a large portion of American police policy is now being drafted by a little-known private company with no public oversight.
The company, which now has more than 200 employees, was founded in 2003 by Bruce Praet and Gordon Graham, two former law enforcement officers who later became attorneys, and businessman Dan Merkle. Before founding Lexipol, Praet was an attorney for the Los Angeles police union and the Orange city attorney’s office, where he handled police litigation.
In an interview, Praet rejected the ACLU’s allegations that Lexipol’s immigration policies were ever unconstitutional or illegal....

Windsor to upgrade officers' tasers: 'They need to be replaced' WINDSOR, Va. – Windsor Police officers will soon be getting five new tasers to replace older ones that are outdated and out of warranty. In a unanimous vote Tuesday night, town council members approved the purchase of the upgraded stun guns that will cost $12,800 over the next three years. Police Chief Dan Riddle said the devices only last about four to six years. Mayor Glyn Willis added it’s more cost effective to buy new ones. “We’ve essentially got to spend some money to replace them,” said Willis. “They aren’t repairable; they need to be replaced.” The approval for the new equipment follows last week’s meeting where council members approved spending more than $25,000 in taxpayer money to have Lexipol, a software company, review and update the police department’s policies. Marlin Sharp of Windsor agrees with the council’s decision to appropriate the funding. “It’s modern equipment, and it’s technology and it costs money,” he said. The changes to police department are part of the ongoing effort to rebuild trust in the community following the body cam video of a December 5, 2020 traffic stop that drew national attention and outrage. “I was disturbed when I saw the initial report,” said Sharp. Sharp said officers have a tough job, and he believes the two officers were justified in the way they handled the controversial stop. “Police officers have to respond to what they see, what they observe, at a moment’s notice,” he said. “They don’t have the luxury of waiting to see how things are going to develop.” Chief Riddle was at Tuesday’s meeting, but he told WTKR he didn’t have time for an interview. Meanwhile, officers will be trained on how to use the new tasers “Our police department is looking to serve the citizens,” Willis said. “I was looking at the police report at the number of calls they make, and they’re doing everything they can to keep us safe.” To help offset the cost of the tasers, the police department will use a state grant of $4,707. window.fbAsyncInit = function() FB.init( appId : '774910576305405', xfbml : true, version : 'v2.9' ); ; (function(d, s, id) var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js"; js.async = true; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); (document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Source link Orbem News #AmericainCrisis #ArmyLt.CaronNazario #CaronNazario #DanRiddle #GlynWillis #IsleofWight #IsleofWightCounty #Lt.CaronNazario #MarlinSharp #Nazario #officers #replaced #Tasers #upgrade #Windsor
