Jamie McCrimmon in Tales of the TARDIS

The most special thing that's come out of Doctor Who in years. But the most important return for me will always be Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon. I want him back in a full episode. His story is so rich for a return that could only involve the Doctor (and/or the TARDIS), as well as not only having clear parallels to Donna Noble's mind wipe, but also being the Classic companion who most meant it that he'd never have left the Doctor willingly and would've followed him until the end.

For the record, this Jamie was the inspiration for Jamie Fraser (note the actor's first name being Frazer) in Outlander, as The War Games (my favorite Classic serial) was what Diana Gabaldon was watching when she came up with her idea, which is arguably Doctor Who fanfiction that 'ships time-traveling highlander Jamie McCrimmon with that serial's WWI nurse, Lady Jennifer. Frazer Hines is well aware of being the inspiration and even cameo'd.

Jamie was not only the longest-serving companion in Doctor Who history (yes, even more episodes than the Brigadier, though Sarah Jane beats him with her spinoff) with his 116 episodes (1966-1969, 1983 and 1985) and this short (2023), but he's also one of the greatest examples of the Doctor's closest and most-beloved companions not necessarily being chosen for being the most "equal" (the idea that companions from humble or easily-belittled beginnings like Jamie, Jo, Leela, Rose, Donna, etc…, who all struggled with insecurity over their worth due to their backgrounds, are his intellectual inferiors and thus not as worthy or appropriate as non-human companions like Romana or River, or even human genius Zoe here, for the Doctor to love--which is an insult to the Doctor and what he fell in love with humanity for), but for being the most human, genuine, loyal and loving as well as brave. This is one thing that Russell T Davies understood so well and Steven Moffat didn't quite get.

Jamie was hardly afraid to call the Doctor out when he disagreed or thought the Doctor had callously gone too far, by the way. Just watch/listen to The Evil of the Daleks for that, which is where the Doctor manipulates Jamie's very humanity to get him to rescue Victoria from the Daleks along with him being the source of the "human factor" used to create human-Dalek hybrids. Jamie's desperate, heartbroken, unrequited reaction (sadly, reduced to just audio, which captures the sound of a kiss) to Victoria's departure likewise puts to bed the idea that sentimental emotionalism and the Doctor dealing with companion reactions at their most human began in the Russell T Davies era.

Jamie certainly was more of a skirt chaser, albeit quite innocent, than you'd assume would be depicted in Classic Who! As much as Ian and Barbara, and then Ben and Polly, were depicted as couples in the TARDIS, they never got such an explicit declaration of feelings as Jamie's in Fury from the Deep.

Jo is the Classic companion who arguably admitted to having feelings for the Doctor himself, describing Cliff Jones as a younger version of the Doctor for why she's choosing him. These shorts allude to this moment as well, though frame it in retrospect as Jo having chosen Cliff over the Doctor, despite her arguably having more of a basis for feelings towards the Doctor than Sarah Jane in School Reunion and her inability to move on (highlighted beautifully when she walked down the aisle alone after her wedding day betrayal, only to be comforted by the Doctor, not to mention her adopting all the children she never had), which made her a mirror to Rose's future. Jo is thus a mirror to Sarah Jane as the companion arguably in love with the Doctor in a not-so-platonic way who moved on and found real love vs. one who didn't move on until it was too late, and who was likewise a mirror to Rose, who is famous for being the companion most explicitly in love with the Doctor to the extent that her moving on involved ending up with the Doctor's Metacrisis (but ultimately choosing him, their daughter Mia and a human life over the Eighth and Eleventh Doctors in Empire of the Wolf).

The Second Doctor's favoritism of Jamie extended so far as to go back for him (quite rare for the Doctor) when he was forced to work for the Time Lord Celestial Intervention Agency (season 6b, which isn't so much a theory anymore) and the reaction towards Jamie was probably the most cuddly and warm the Sixth Doctor (to the extent that the turbulent relationship with Peri got a little better for that one serial because of Jamie's presence) sadly ever got on screen before Big Finish salvaged the era. Jamie always brings out of the best in the Doctor and what the Doctor loves humanity the most for.

That Frazer Hines was so genuinely close to Patrick Troughton in real life (they were quite the mischievous pair, often sneaking gags in past the censors in addition to their pranks!) comes across so beautifully in every voice impression of his old friend and through his portrayal of Jamie whose love for and wish to have never left the Doctor is unquestionable.

Obviously, there was that fear of what he had left to return to, but also his belief that he needed to be there to protect the Doctor, which he always took it upon himself to do. Jamie would no doubt get along very well with the Brigadier (whose first story was with Jamie), Leela and Ace in their willingness towards protective violence, not to mention Ian and Rory often facing having to fill that role a little more reluctantly. And most of all, one of the deepest, most-loving friendships among Doctor and companion. Yes, there is exactly one iteration of the Doctor whose closest, most-favorite companion (that tendency towards favoritism was already there) was unambiguously not any of the female ones and was an even firmer break from the Doctor's old model of replacing his granddaughter with a relationship that felt far more like friends/partners in crime with a hint of fatherliness or mad uncle. And of course, this twin mop-topped Odd Couple fit in nowhere. Jamie was as out-of-place and "alien" as the Doctor wherever the TARDIS landed.

And given where he was sent back to by the Time Lords, his future without his memories looked pretty dire. His immediate return involved being being shot at, hanged, put on a slave ship by the Redcoats or fleeing to France--which was the context of his situation when the Doctor saved his life and he walked into the TARDIS when he was a piper from the Battle of Culloden in 1746 who could neither swim or read, and who was as likely to call an airplane a "flying beastie" as calling a Cyberman "the Phantom Piper", and then was returned to that sans all memories but for his first adventure before entering the TARDIS.

Obviously, Russell T Davies has given Jamie quite a happier ending than his tragic comic fate in The World Shapers in which old Jamie has finally gotten his memories back, but his family (he married Kirsty McLaren, daughter of the laird whom he was a humble, orphaned piper for, from The Highlanders) has abandoned him over it and he rapidly ages to death in sacrifice. The Tenth Doctor also had a comic companion named Heather McCrimmon (descended from those five daughters, but still retains the surname!) who still carried her ancestor's Artron radiation energy from the TARDIS. I would love to see Jamie meet Heather, who would be awesome to see realized on screen.

Synopsis

We open with one Jenny Flint buying racing pigeons because Vastra keeps eating the- because the pigeons keep getting out. She also buys a swan for Vastra (which, if you know Brit lore, the Queen owns most of the swans for some reason XD, and this is therefore a big ""Fuck you"" from Vastra to the Queen), when suddenly an electric car without a driver attacks the market. At home in Paternoster Row Vastra checks if Jenny is okay and promptly suggests a 'lie down' together... 😂 The guy making the electric cars owns a factory that quite literally works its workers to death in assembly lines, or absorbs the people's brains. The Gang infiltrates said factory (Strax starts a small war after doing a gloriously funny Cockney impression), trip an alarm, and have to flee. Strax runs through a wall. They try to escape in their carriage, two electric cars chasing them. When the carriage crashes, Strax is prepared to take the cars on in hand to hand combat; he sees it as a tactical advantage for himself that the cars don't have arms. Or so he thinks: the electric cars are actually electric TRANSFORMERS. While Strax rallies the workers to seize the means of production (communist king) and Jenny is prepped to be absorbed (she kicks the lady trying to tie her up and frees herself), Vastra has a talk with Mr Solak that ends in her being electrocuted and temporarily disabled for being IBSANELY mouthy. Solak's transformers are automated enough that he doesn't require any more workers, and he plans to absorb the brains of everyone in London with his factory he's made mobile. Well, they manage to escape and get caught AGAIN (they're that skilled istg) they try to absorb Strax as well, and while Vastra talks to Solak and distracts him, Strax takes advantage of the high voltage they connected him to and uses the energy to recharge himself properly. A hilarious audio to kick off the fiest boxset, though not without its serious moments. The concept is insane tho and I love tha. (@jennyandvastraflint )

1. How many works do you have on AO3? 22 as amaruuk 18 as EllisWard

2. What’s your total A03 word count? 642,619 as amaruuk

3. What fandoms do you write for? Currently BBC Sherlock and Good Omens. Earlier works include dueSouth (tangentially from which I got the name amaruuk, which is Inuktitut for two wolves, though I am the least wolfy creature on the planet), an X-Files/Forever Knight crossover, The Fugitive (movie), Lord of the Rings, a Doctor Who/Escape from New York crossover, and a couple other one-offs. As Ellis Ward I wrote exclusively Professionals (Bodie/Doyle).

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Always! I'm thrilled whenever anyone takes the time to comment.

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably Over Sea, my LotR story which follows Frodo to the Blessed Realm. Its angsty ending comes from the disparity in how time works in Middle Earth vs Aman (much faster in the latter), so that Frodo laments outliving all of those he left behind, though he (and Sam, thanks to the gift of dust and a Mallorn seed given him by Galadriel) is alive at the end.

I live for happy endings. Fanfic is my refuge from the pain of the world and I would never impose an angsty ending on the characters I write (though I might torment them a bit in the body of a story).

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? See 6 above. They're ALL happy. :D

8. Do you get hate on fics? The only story I've written in The Avengers universe incited some particularly intense objections because of my take on Tony. Some folks are deeply possessive of their characters and I understand that. Otherwise, no. Thank goodness.

9. Do you write smut? Yeah, I'm one of those who wants to know what's going where, but without being excessively graphic. So, sex scenes for the sake of smuttiness, no. Sex scenes to convey affection and deep emotion, yes.

10. Do you write crossovers? I've done two. An X-Files/Forever Knight, Act Three, that ended up having a surprising amount of plot. The other featured Doctor Who's Leela encountering Escape from New York's Snake Plissken, A Selfish Way to Commit Suicide, which also worked out surprisingly well. (K-9's in it, too!)

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Once. A very long time ago. Someone took a Bodie/Doyle fic, reworked a bit of the verbiage, and put it out as a Kirk/Spock story (!). The plagiarist (who was understood to be a very good writer on her own merits), sort of stepped into the shadows until the kerfuffle kerfuffled out. Honestly, it didn't bother me overmuch. I was more surprised by how others in the fandom reacted: there was a surprising amount of heat and fervor on my behalf, bless them.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Nope.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No.

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship? I'm going to be honest and say that it depends on which ship is commanding my attention at the time. I'll always feel a deep fondness for the ships that have gone before, but the current one (now that Good Omens was stabbed in the heart by Neil Gaiman) is Sherlock and John. The writers in this fandom are astonishingly good!

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I have a handful of outlined stories that I will never write, but I only post completed fics.

16. What are your writing strengths? It's important to me that the storytelling is clear, the characters in character, and the dialogue authentic. I can't say that I always achieve that, but I do try very hard to do so.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? There are times when I would say "everything." When the writing is not transparent, when the reader is seeing the mechanics of my writing, then, yeah, that's a weakness. I try to avoid that.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I am so envious of others able to do this. I can't.

19. First fandom you wrote for? Star Trek. A very long time ago.

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written? So far, in Sherlock, What It Can Be. Season 4 is an acknowledged insult to the fans, but it also gives rise to a certain compulsion TO FIX; this story deals with the aftermath of Sherlock's drug use and John's abuse of Sherlock in The Lying Detective. In the Good Omens verse, I would have to choose After the War, in which Adam allows Armageddon to proceed, Heaven loses, and Aziraphale is given to Crowley for services rendered. It's actually very dark, with an element of "fuck or die," but in the end they prevail.

2021 End-of-Year Fic Questions

1. favorite fic you wrote this year

ohhh this one’s hard. I am proudest of my What We Choose ‘verse fics because there’s so much time and energy and heart behind them. but they’re less polished than some of my other fics because I rushed to get them published, so I like the prose in other ones better….and hmm also arguably favorite implies which one Appeals to My Interests the most…..

I’ll say Call It Home. It’s very “me catering to my interests as a reader” (ot3 moments of happiness before the war!) and it was so fun to write. My previous experience with trying to write something lighthearted was wow this is hard, but Call It Home just kind of flowed? I loved getting to spend time with each of the pairs of the ot3 and all of them together and create this space where the worst conflict between them is awkward feelings, things are generally just. good and they’re building something really solid between them. And I loved the format of all these slice-of-life scenes over time – some involving more serious emotions, some soft and comforting, some silly (*eyes the ‘Narvin almost discovers Romana’s fanfic’ scene,* truly that one was so fun to write 😄), and all of it orbiting around the arc of Narvin and Romana’s relationship changing post-Enemy Lines and how they’re processing those changes.

(I also can’t remember for sure when I actually wrote it, but I’m pretty sure at least some of it was in January (vs. late December 2020), so it Counts as “wrote this year.”)

4. total number of words you wrote this year

I posted 122,938 words in 2021, but I didn’t write all of those words in 2021 – many of the words in my late January/early February fics were written in 2020. and unlike in previous years, I don’t have Big Projects that I’ve worked on this year but haven’t posted, so my total number of words written is definitely lower this year than the previous two years. but this is a good thing! because my mental health could not sustain the previous pace, and slowing down is healthy for me. 😊

10. shortest wip of the year

hmm I’m going to interpret this as “shortest fic that I wrote this year but haven’t finished/posted,” which is a Leela/Narvin fic I wrote when I fell into my shortfic writing phase later in the year. (I hadn’t written any Leela/Narvin-centric fic, and a short fic seemed like a good time to branch out!)

24. favorite fic you read this year

ohhh this is tricky *scrolls through bookmarks*

so I love good longfic, and I love good AUs, and I binged all of this series (that was out so far) so quickly when I started reading it:

The Roads That Forgot How To Speak by @picnokinesis aka Doctor Who series 12 human au – four parts are out so far. So many things to love about this series – the clever ways events and characters are adapted to the human au, how it explores effects of trauma and digs deep into character dynamics, the pacing that kept me scrolling and scrolling and scrolling, the ambition of it (writing a novel length au of each episode of series 12!!)….highly highly recommend this series, it’s absolutely brilliant.

and I also must mention:

Romana The Promise by @presidentromana – aka the Romana/Sartia-centric Star Wars AU ft. the usual Gallifrey suspects. This fic broke my heart and then held me in the aftermath. Traumatized kids who only have each other in a hostile environment! Duels with flirtatious gay vibes! Duels that will haunt you! Torture and resistance and eventually, eventually, comfort! Horrific mentor/apprentice dynamics! Even if you are not familiar with Sartia, if you’re into Gallifrey, definitely check this one out, I was reeling after I read it.

there are many 2021 Gallifrey fics I want to Yell about though, there was some very good writing happening this year!! and I keep meaning to put together a proper rec post….

So I’ve had time to think over Gallifrey Time War 4 and overall, I very much enjoyed the boxset. I thought the writing was strong and the cast were all brilliant at playing against each other and it was great to return to this world. Overall, this one has been difficult for me to rate as I’m not quite ready to let go of Gallifrey series or it’s characters but it’s a 4 for me.

Spoilers underneath for my full thoughts:

I know nobody truly dies in big finish and I sincerely hope they restore Brax somewhere in the Benny range again or at least in further Time War ranges.

Richard Armitage was a perfect cast as Rassilon though I wish he was given more to do.

Mantus running towards the Daleks on the ship and trying to ‘reason’ with them was a bit of out character for Mantus and stupid or at least I thought so.

Romana ending in Home coming was what dropped it to a lower star but overall, I’m glad she’s safe for the time being.

Brax and Romana having a two part story was wonderful! I love the two having to work together in Beyond and Brax talking about the Doctor and being his brother and how they chose different paths but that ending destroyed me. Brax will always be my favourite.

Narvin being Reyo’s adopted dad is the cutest and I wished we got more but I loved we got to learn more about Narvin’s past and Patrex chapter in Dissolution.

The Rassilon VS Dalek emperor show down was kind of funny.

I love that we got to see Romana and Leela working more together on this boxset and Narvin being reunited with Leela

On December 2 of 2019, I posted my “32 Underrated Male Actors of Bollywood” list. In that post, I promised an underrated female actors list soon, and after two long months, I finally got to finishing it. The biggest reason why it took such a long time for me to put this up (apart from spending more time on my other posts) was that there was just way too many unnoticed talents to mention. Many of the women mentioned here don’t fit the typical mold of a Bollywood heroine, but possess such immense talent that it should be a crime to not notice them.
