English artist and author Edward Lear was born #OTD (12 May 1812 - 29 Jan 1888). His gorgeous parrot paintings are exceptional not just for their scientific accuracy and vivid color, but for their infusion of individual personality, a result of him making a point of sketching living birds whenever possible, such as with this Scarlet Macaw (Ara Macao):
Tumblr media
Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots; "Macrocercus Aracanga (Red and Yellow Macaw)" 1832 [now Ara macao = Scarlet Macaw]
Bruce Boehrer's excellent book Parrot Culture: Our 2500-Year-Long Fascination with the World's Most Talkative Bird (2010) discusses this image and Lear’s unique style: “The whimsy that distinguished him as a writer…is already evident in these illustrations, and it speaks to the whimsical quality of the birds themselves. Lear and parrots were made for each other.” (p.93)

I did a few plush birds for #avianaugust2023 but they’re all in the second half of the month! So here’s the Lear’s Macaw! Surprisingly different from a hyacinth macaw, but I wonder if I was even able to show it well enough in this style, haha…

If big Leo, Sprout and Poptart were birds what kinda birds would they be?
(Totally not asking because I like your bird art)
Oh my GOSH ive been pondering this question for hours and hours but I think I finally have an answer-
I was originally thinking about the whole worlds worth of species before realizing, in the end they are all Leos. Therefore they all get to be Parrots. I love parrots...
----
Big Leo: Lear's Macaw
Basically the smaller, cuter, and more light blue version of the Hyacinth Macaw (Hyacinth macaw being the largest parrot species that is capable of flight)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
---
Medium Leo (Sprout): Spix Macaw
Yes. The bird from Rio. Look at them. None of them are left in the wild but their are a good few remaining in captivity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
---
Little Leo (Poptart): Quaker/Monk Parakeet (blue mutation)
He is just a little guy. A little stinker, even. Enjoys shitting on your laptop and eating the keys off your keyboard. But he is very cuddly-

Hey guys I'm feeling silly so here are my hybrid (or lack of the hybrid) headcanons (I'll split them by language)
Part 1 / English speakers (treating Quackity and ElQuackity as separete members)
Bad - Demon (not exactly a hybrid, he's straight up a demon but he's much more humane than other demons)
Fit - Human (sorry but to me FitMC of 2b2t with forever be Just A Guy™)
Foolish - totem/shark (it's complicated, he's technically just a totem but he adapted so many human mannerisms that he doesn't act like one at all)
Jaiden - avain/birb (obviously), lear's macaw/blue-throated macaw/hiacynth macaw (since I can't quite decide, but I know she's a majestic-and-blue bird, kinda getting into her Fed. roots)
Phil - avian, before used to a carrion crow but now is a new caledonian crow (since it's a more "tropical" variation, more fitting for the quesadilla island, idk how he changed don't ask me about the details)
Quackity- avian, reguler mallard (the basic one, but as a baby much more yellow and his wings never grew past the "yellow baby feathers" phase)
Charlie - slime (idk if im learning towards the "human guy with slime all over him" slime-hybrid-charlie or "literally a pile of goo with a t-shirt" one)
Mouse - demon (this time we got a human/demon hybrid not like Bad)
Niki - lynx (im kinda baised since lynxes are endangered and native to Poland which is my country but Poland and Germany are neighbours so it's not that big of a stretch, also i always thought of q!Niki as a cat hybrid so the lynx just adds flavour)
Tina - demon but tries to pass off as a maine coon hybrid (cause it's easy to hide her demon features under the maine coon's big ones except she's quite shorts so ppl are starting to get suspicious since they are pretty big cats)
Tubbo - goat (i'm sorry i can't let go of this brilliant dsmp fanon), breed: australian cashmere goat
[Edit: removed Wilbur]

Here is a totally unprompted, baseless, and useless crackpot theory.
In the poems The Jumblies and The Dong with the Luminous Nose by Edward Lear, Lear describes the Jumblies as having “sky-blue hands and sea-green hair,” and most artists — including Lear himself — would draw them as little humanoid gremlin creatures.
I think he was describing blue and gold macaws.
Tumblr media
Blue and gold macaws have blue wings and a prominent green crest on their heads. “Their heads are green, their hands are blue, and they went to sea in a sieve.”
And here’s another fact: Edward Lear was famous for painting parrots. He published an entire book of parrots painted by studying live examples at the London Zoo and from private collections, including the blue and gold macaw.
Tumblr media
Which means he definitely studied them in person before he wrote the poem.
Does any of this mean anything? Absolutely not, but you should read some of Edward Lear’s nonsense poetry because he was writing his own private poetic universe and characters and concepts he would describe in one poem would be expanded in others. The Dong is connected to the Jumblies and the Quangle Wangle Quee, which in turn connects him to the Pobble Who Has No Toes, and his name is the Dong.
