Fantasy sight: Fuseli
Henry Fuseli, also known as Johann Heinrich Füssli, is often mistaken for a British artist because he spent so much time in Britain - but in truth he was one of the most famous Swiss painters of the late 18th-early 19th century. Most people today only know him for his most famous and celebrated pieces, "The Nightmare":
But it wasn't his only take on superstitions and legends surrounding night demons and bad-dream spirits. For example, he also did this folkloric piece called "Night-hag visiting the Lapland Witches":
Fuseli also did a LOT of Shakespearian pieces. He did a "Titania and Bottom"...
An "Ariel"...
A "Puck, or Robin Goodfellow"
A "Macbeth consulting the visions of the armed head"
Of course, there is also his VERY famous "Three Witches"
Beyond Shakespearian pieces, Fuseli also did all sorts of paintings covering "classical" themes.
From the Odyssey he made an "Odysseus in front of Scylla and Charybdis"(correction, couldn't find a picture that fits, so have instead a "Tiresias appearing to Odysseus / Tiresias predicting the future")
From The Faerie Queene he did a "Britomart delivering Amoretta from the enchantment of Busirane"
And, more surprisingly, from Norse mythology, he did a very famous "Thor battering the Midgard Serpent"

Just a few days ago I was watching a wonderful movie called Dreamer with my family and watching it made me thinking of how much I appreciate such little movies. What do I mean by “little”? Well, movies made on an smaller scale, without bloodsheding battles, without life-or-death fights, without gigantic VFX monsters. Movies where the only battles are within you, where fights are silent, where the world around you is the most magical thing to behold.
So, that’s why I decided to do a list of movies I would like to recommend, filled with stories that- while small- make an big impact.
Dreamer
Living on a horse ranch without horses, 9 year old Cale manages to persuade her father- a horse trainer- to save Sonador, a racing horse with a broken leg. While the family has barely money and her father and grandfather haven’t talked in years, Cale’s dream to save Sonador, saves the family. Both Cale and her father are right, and both have to learn. A little movie with wonderful performances.
Paterson
A young bus driver named Paterson drives the bus line named Paterson, lives in the town called Paterson, his favorite writer is named Paterson, and in his spare time he writes poetry. We follow him through one week.This may seem weak for a story, but let me tell you this is the most poetic movie I’ve ever seen. You love Paterson who values the simple, you love his wife who enjoys to create. Adam Driver gives a terrific performance.
Fly away home
After the death of her mother, 13 year old Amy moves from New Zealand to her father in Canada. It is cold, it is dull, they have nothing in common. Until Amy finds a deserted nest of wild geese and becomes their mother. Suddenly father and daughter face the challenge of bringing young wild geese to the south in autumn.Based on a true event, this movie shines with the simplicity of the task the main characters are faced to overcome, Anna Paquin is wonderful as Amy
Above where it snows
A few days before Christmas in an house where a freshly divorced woman wants to give her little daughter the best Christmas ever, also live an single father with his teenaged daughter, a young couple celebrating their first holiday together, an old dear grandmother, an old grumpy janitor and an middle aged couple without a Christmas goose. There is also a young pastor preparing his first Christmas mass. An accident brings them together on Christmas Eve. This German TV movie is not only funny, but filled with Christmas spirit, and what it truly means.
Cowboys
An theater director accepts the offer to start a small theater as part of an cultural project in an forgotten town in Croatia. The people who sign up for a role are outsiders who have no idea how a theater play looks, and some don’t even seem to speak our language. While preparing a Wild West play they all learn more about each other. This movie is comedic gold and one of the best movies Croatia has to offer in the last years.
Mushrooming
An Estonian political goes mushrooming with his wife, taking on the gas station along an musician that needs a drive to the next town. The wonderful Estonian forest becomes more threatening then the jungle of politics. This movie may start off slow, but very soon as the pace takes up you will find yourself hurting with laughter.
Ondine
A poor Irish fisherman without much luck in life pulls with his nets out of the sea a woman. She doesn’t seem to understand English nor does she want to be seen by other people. The only thing she does is sing at times. While his little daughter is convinced that the woman is a real selkie- a mermaid like creature- he slowly starts to wonder it too. While not a fantasy movie at all, this little story with Colin Farrell as the lead is more that magical.
Once
He plays music in the street, she likes to sing while cleaning other people’s houses. Dublin’s soul is music. The one week they go through together can only happen once in a life.There are no words to describe this movie. Just go and see it. (It won an Oscar for best song)
Lapland Odyssey
When his wife treathnes with divorce if he doesn’t get her a digi Box so she could watch Titanic on Friday night, a young man and his two do-no-good friends go up against the dangers of the Finnish winter in order to save the damsel in distres. This simple quest turned out to be more dangerous then they expected.What can I say, the craziest road-movie to play in the forests of Finnland.

Here’s the first one, it’s a movie rec list of Finnish movies, most of which I have actually seen (I admit I don’t watch a ton of Finnish stuff despite living in Finland). Perhaps you’ve seen some of these but I think watching movies in one’s target language is always good practice since the language in them is much closer to actual spoken language than what you see in text books or literature. Don’t know how easy it’d be to find these movies online but if you’re in Finland I’m sure most libraries have at least some of them.

It’s been three years since we last met Janne and Inari. Since then, they’ve had a daughter named Lumi. Janne and his friends experience a new adventure, this time on an autumn night.
