ai generated mushroom guides could get people killed
Tumblr media
'i'm not going to link any of them here, for a variety of reasons, but please be aware of what is probably the deadliest AI scam i've ever heard of: plant and fungi foraging guide books. the authors are invented, their credentials are invented, and their species IDs will kill you"
Tumblr media
"update: i keep getting annoyed that the QTs are like "if this is true, it's horrifying" ..but you're right, you don't know me from a hole in the ground and you SHOULD worry about the veracity of anything you find online."
thread source
so i went looking

wild harvest publications... no named author? i n t e r e s t i n g
"To keep it economically prices" hmm *the design is very human meme*
this book that promises highly detailed descriptions doesn't even have color images unless you pay a premium
"Mushroom hunting is easier than you think, and less dangerous than everyone assumes." hmm. hmmmmm. yeah the government definitely put out those 'if you don't know what it is don't put it in your mouth' PSAs for no reason
tldr don't buy foraging guides off amazon if you can't locate a human author and verify their credentials yourself

Darkness and coolness bring forth mushrooms of all types and kinds.
Autumn is a bonanza for foraging, but be careful. Many, but not all, are edible.
Some, like the red-looking Russula will causse illness if not properly prepared.
Best to stay far away; there are so many other safer choices.

Mushroom season has definitely begun in the Midwest.
Wetter weather and cool nights can bloom mushrooms of beastly proportions.
This monster is something called a Giant Puffball. They can get bigger still...
Don't worry. The beast was slain, fried in butter, and seasoned with a bit of salt.

Mushrooming is not just about mushrooms. 'Tis about the breathtaking landscapes you happen to see, the stange odd things you happen to find, the spiderwebs on your face, the sweating, the silence, birds singing far away, somewhere in the valley, the rustlings of lizards in the grass, the gruff calls of raw deers when you approach an area where they're standing.
But it's also about mushrooms. Like when, after a two hours walk without having found anything, you feel kind of lost; you have taken the strangest paths uncut through by human being so to meet them on your way, but you met just rustlings, and gruff calls, and odd things and spiderwebs on your face, and also a light rain is starting to pouring down a grey sky, and even your cat, who has followed you all the way through, is starting to swearing, you see them. Unexpectedly you see them. And turning to your faithful cat, you go, "See? It was worth it."
