Lagertha

I’m reading Joan Druett’s She Captains: Heroines and Hellions of the Sea for me and Amelia’s podcast (the book discussion will be roughly “fucking whoa that’s some cool history, here’s some more cool history, whoa she stuck that guy’s severed head in a bag of human blood whaaaaaat”) and I am very fond of this tale for a variety of reasons, not the least of which that this is the Peak Straight Historical Romance Novel I Have Dreamed Of:
“About A.D. 870, just one generation after [female Danish princess turned pirate] Alfhild’s time, Frey, the king of Sweden, slew the king of the Norwegians (another Siward) and put all his womenfolk in a brothel. When Ragnar, the current overlord of Denmark, heard of this insult to his relatives, he went to Norway on a mission of vengeance. When they heard that he was coming, the women dressed up as men, broke out of the brothel, and came to camp to join his army. As Saxo himself recorded:
Among them was Ladgerda, a famous Valkyrie, who, though a maiden, had the courage of a man, and fought in front among the bravest with her hair loose over her shoulders. All marveled at her matchless deeds, for her locks flying down her back betrayed that she was a woman.
Incidentally, this saga follows convention. Ragnar, understandably impressed, took to courting Ladgerda. She set two beasts about her door in the usual obstacle course. He speared one with one hand, strangled the second with the other, and caught her up in his arms.”
