Andor
Prequel series to Star Wars " Rogue One." In an era filled with danger, deception, and intrigue, Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a Rebel hero.
After the shitshow that was "The Book of Boba Fett" and "Obi-wan Kenobi," I had no more faith in Star Wars. I was convinced that the only thing keeping this franchise alive was Little Baby Gorgu and his Pappa in "The Mandalorian." So when Andor premiered, I turned away. I had no motivation whatsoever to watch this show, even when the glowing reviews poured in. I knew the show was good, but I believed the praises were inflated by people who only watch fast-food movies and encounter what competent writing looks like for the first time. However, after seeing it be nominated for some major awards, I finally decided to sit down and watch it. I was not ready for the show that came before me. Andor is Star Wars at its best. Not only is this series a great Star Wars show, but it's an incredibly compelling political-spy thriller that uses Star Wars as a setting.
The first decision that set Andor up for greatness was using the World of Star Wars as a setting. Many properties within Star Wars focus heavily on the world rather than the actual characters and stories. Because of this decision, they wrote an engaging political-spy thriller that delves into the dirt of what it takes to perform a rebellion. From the players on top arranging funding through arranged marriages, money laundering, and political backstabbing. To the men on the ground performing "terrorism" and cutting off loose ends. This story put together, is further lifted by the pace and tension of the show. Andor is a perfect example of a slow burn that slowly builds its tension and stakes at every passing moment till its eventual burst in the finale. The final aspect that sends Andor above the entire Star Wars property is its intelligent and smart writing. The characters are wonderfully written, with each given depth, never seen in this world. Furthermore, all of the conversations between these characters are smart and respect the audience's intelligence. Disney, please explain to me why you did not put this much care and detail into the sequel trilogy.
What elevates Andor even further is acting from the entire ensemble. Star Wars is known for its incredibly mixed acting performances, yet Andor delivers performances worthy of Emmy nominations. Diego Luna is on form here, returning to his iconic role of Andor. He's back and grittier than ever, giving a powerful performance as one swept up in a rebellion. Stellan Skarsgard is great, as always, here. Denise Gough gives a performance that makes her the most intimidating and intelligent villain since Darth Vader and the Emperor. The same can be said for Kyle Soller's performance. Andy Serkis gives a powerful, Emmy-worthy performance with his monologue during the prison break sequence. Second that, give everyone an Emmy nomination who gave a powerful monologue. This is the best acting that Star Wars has ever brought, and I wonder where this has been for the franchise for the past couple of years.
What adds to the greatness of Andor is how grounded the world of Star Wars feels here. From using real locations and actual sets, this is easily the most tangible Star Wars has been since the original trilogy. Furthermore, this is the best that Star Wars has ever looked. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous and is masterfully used as an element of storytelling. The score by Nicholas Britell brings a whole new score to Star Wars that blends wonderfully with the story and the universe. The attention to detail in the show's worldbuilding is easily the best since the Original Trilogy.
Andor is the Star Wars how you never knew you wanted. Instead of focusing on big space battles and lightsaber fights, Andor is grounded and focuses on intelligent writing and acting to keep you engaged. It proves that you don't need The Force for it to be Star Wars. Do not sleep on this show. It's as good as everyone says it is. This might be an underdog at this year's Emmy awards, so don't leave this show out.
I am giving Andor, an A.

FUTURE LUCASFILM PROJECTS REVEALED GET READY FOR PATTY JENKINS’ ROGUE SQUADRON FILM, AN AHSOKA TANO LIVE-ACTION SERIES, THE RETURN OF HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN AND MUCH, MUCH MORE.       Today at The Walt Disney Company’s Investor Day event, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced a staggering number of new films, series, and surprises that will expand the Star Wars galaxy like never before.
Tumblr media
Rogue Squadron The next Star Wars feature film will be Rogue Squadron — directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman franchise). The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.       “It’s been a lifelong dream as a filmmaker to one day make a great fighter pilot film,” said Jenkins. “As the daughter of a great fighter pilot myself, some of the best memories of my life are of seeing my father’s squadron take off in their F4s every morning, and hearing and feeling the awe-inspiring power and grace. When he passed away in service to this country it ignited a burning desire to one day channel all of those emotions into one great film. When the perfect story arrived in combination with another true love of mine, the incomparable world of Star Wars, I knew I’d finally found my next film. I’m extremely honored and excited to take it on, and grateful to Lucasfilm, Disney, and the fans for extending that thrill to me.”       “Patty has established herself as one of the top directors working in the film industry today,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “She’s a visionary who knows how to strike the balance between action and heart, and I can’t wait to see what she does in the Star Wars galaxy.”       Lock S-foils in attack position: Rogue Squadron arrives in theaters Christmas 2023.
Tumblr media
Untitled Taika Waititi Film       A brand-new Star Wars feature with acclaimed filmmaker and Academy Award-winner Taika Waititi is in development. “Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and…unique,” said Kennedy. “His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure that audiences are in for an unforgettable ride.”
Tumblr media
Obi-Wan Kenobi Last August at D23 Expo, Lucasfilm announced the return of Ewan McGregor in the iconic role of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi for a special event series on Disney+. Officially titled Obi-Wan Kenobi, the series begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where he faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. The series is directed by Deborah Chow, who helmed memorable episodes of The Mandalorian Season 1.      This will truly be a day long remembered, as it was confirmed that Hayden Christensen will be returning as Darth Vader. “This will be the rematch of the century,” Kennedy said.      “It was such an incredible journey playing Anakin Skywalker,” said Christensen. “Of course, Anakin and Obi-Wan weren’t on the greatest of terms when we last saw them… It will be interesting to see what an amazing director like Deborah Chow has in store for us all. I’m excited to work with Ewan again. It feels good to be back.”
Tumblr media
Ahsoka After making her long awaited live-action debut in The Mandalorian, Ahsoka Tano’s story, written by Dave Filoni, will continue in a limited series starring Rosario Dawson and executive produced by Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau. Rangers of the New Republic Set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, this new live-action series from executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event.
Tumblr media
Lando Everyone’s favorite scoundrel Lando Calrissian will return in a brand-new event series for Disney+. Justin Simien, creator of the critically-acclaimed Dear White People and a huge Star Wars fan, is developing the story.
Tumblr media
Andor  Andor, a tense nail-biting spy thriller created by Tony Gilroy, is set to arrive on Disney+ in 2022. Diego Luna, reprising the role of rebel spy Cassian Andor from Rogue One, will be joined by a fantastic new cast that includes Stellan Skarsgard, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma. Production kicked off three weeks ago in London.
Tumblr media
The Acolyte Leslye Headland, Emmy Award-nominated creator of the mind-bending series Russian Doll, brings a new Star Wars series to Disney+ with The Acolyte. The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.
Tumblr media
Star Wars: The Bad Batch The series follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch (first introduced in The Clone Wars) as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone War. Members of Bad Batch — a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army — each possess a singular exceptional skill which makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew. In the post-Clone War era, they will take on daring mercenary missions as they struggle to stay afloat and find new purpose.      The animated series will arrive exclusively on Disney+.

London-born, Yorkshire-raised actor James Norton, 34, is best known for his TV roles in Happy Valley, Grantchester, McMafia and War and Peace. He now plays Stephen Ward, a key figure in the Profumo affair, in BBC One’s new drama The Trial Of Christine Keeler, which starts on Sunday 29 Decemberat 9pm. He also appears in Little Women, in cinemas now, and stars in Mr Jones, a film about the Welsh journalist who broke the news of the 1932 Soviet famine, released on 7 February.
1. Theatre
Slave Play by Jeremy O Harris
I asked my friend Kyle Soller [American actor currently in The Inheritance] what play to see in New York and without hesitation, he said this. It didn’t disappoint. It’s taken Broadway by storm but I was lucky enough to get a last-minute ticket and went on my own. It’s tricky to discuss the plot without spoilers because there’s an incredible twist halfway through but it takes a huge swing at questions surrounding race, sexuality and gender in America with such punch and provocation, you can’t help but admire its bravery. A phenomenal sensory overload. It’s meant to be coming to London and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
2. Music
Sharon Van Etten
It’s an achievement to stand out at Glastonbury, considering the bill there - I saw Stormzy, Ezra Collective, Jungle, all these brilliant acts - but Sharon Van Etten was the one who really popped for me at this year’s festival and she’s since taken over my Spotify. Her music is so visceral and emotive. She has this raspy, irreverent voice and her lyrics have such power and poetry. I’ve had her Remind Me Tomorrow album, especially the song Seventeen, on repeat ever since. It whisks me straight back to bouncing around at Worthy Farm.
3. Novel
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
My girlfriend [actor Imogen Poots] is a voracious reader who’s always suggesting authors to me and Carson McCullers was the most recent. This is her debut, published in 1940 when she was 23, which is just absurd considering it’s so extraordinary. It’s the story of a deaf-mute in a 1930s mill town and the disparate people he meets. McCullers writes with such insight into these characters, all differing in age, gender and social class. It’s so mature and sophisticated, I keep having to remind myself how young she was. It’s essentially about loneliness, and a deeply moving read.
4. Bar
Village Vanguard, New York
I’ve been shooting in upstate New York for the past few months, so I’m afraid many of my recent highlights are New York-based. Two weeks ago I had a wonderful night at this old jazz bar in the West Village. It’s got amazing heritage and tradition. All the greats have played there. It’s exactly how you’d imagine a downtown jazz club to be: small tables, great cocktails, superb music. We saw the Javon Jackson Quartet, drank multiple vodka martinis and felt excellent. There wasn’t any dancing that night but there was chin-stroking, head-nodding and foot-tapping. Followed by enthusiastic applause, perhaps even some whooping.
5. Film
The Rider (2017)
I watch a lot of films, so it was hard to pick one but this really stuck with me. It’s directed by Chloé Zhao, won a prize at Cannes and is about the rodeo circuit and modern-day cowboys. It has almost documentary naturalism, mostly using non-actors, which is always interesting, and its world is incredibly well realised. The lead character is played by Brady Jandreau, who’d never acted before, and he’s insanely raw and gut-wrenching. It’s bleak but also breathtakingly beautiful. Zhao gets these magic hour shots, which are something to behold.
6. Exhibition
Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now
I’m ashamed to say I didn’t know much about Robert Mapplethorpe but he’s such an iconic figure in American art, so I went along to the [New York] Guggenheim to educate myself. It’s about his legacy and how his work has translated to modern society. It was so potent and contentious when he was making it in the 70s and 80s. Photographs were placed next to negative reviews and soundbites from the time. His audacious work was met by so much fear and mistrust when he was alive. It was striking how much – and in some cases, how little – attitudes have moved on.

Stars to celebrate British theater at annual Olivier Awards
Tumblr media
Stars of the British stage are gearing up for the Olivier Awards ceremony in London, where the musicals “Come From Away” and “Company” lead this year’s race for recognition with nine nominations apiece.
“Come From Away,” about the Newfoundland town of Gander that hosted thousands of travelers stranded by canceled flights after the 9/11 attacks, is up for best new musical at Britain’s equivalent of Broadway’s Tony Awards.
A gender-switched production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” is nominated in categories including best musical revival.
The epic gay-history drama “The Inheritance” has eight nominations, including best new play, best actor for Kyle Soller and best supporting actress for Vanessa Redgrave.
A revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I” starring Kelli O’Hara and Ken Watanabe, which began life at New York’s Lincoln Center, has six nominations.
Other acting contenders include Ian McKellen for “King Lear;” Gillian Anderson for “All About Eve;” and Sophie Okonedo for “Antony and Cleopatra.”
Sally Field, Kelsey Grammer, Tom Hiddleston and Wendell Pierce are among stars expected on the red carpet Sunday at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Named for the late British actor Laurence Olivier, the prizes honor achievements in London theater, musicals, dance and opera. Winners in most categories are chosen by a panel of stage professionals and theatergoers.
This year’s show will also salute long-running musicals “The Lion King” and “Mamma Mia,” each celebrating 20 years in London’s West End.
Matthew Bourne — the choreographer behind an iconic production of “Swan Lake” — is set to receive a lifetime achievement honor, presented by Prince Charles’ wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.
