A dinosaur tooth, possibly a Kryptops palaios from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. Although this type of abelisaurid teeth is often labeled as Kryptops, the morphology does not quite match the holotype. The shape of the serrations in particular are not hooked-shaped, though they could have been simply been worn down as is common with teeth from the Elrhaz Formation. The teeth of Kryptops is comparable to the younger Rugops primus, at least, from what is currently known of its dentition.

Would you be able to do a Kryptops for the paleopixels series? I know its pretty obscure but it's my favourite dinosaur :D

Although kryptops is widely considered the earliest known abelisaurid, some scientists dispute the authenticity of the species. Some postcranial remains, especially the pelvis and sacrum, were found some 15 meters away from the holotypic maxilla, thus leading some scientists to believe that the species is a chimera.

i did NOT get very far in dinovember but at least i got the therizinosaur, my favorite weirdo.

having kara zor-el thoughts today about her getting out of her ship, and she does not yet know what she is doing so years after she was supposed to. she is trying to focus not on what she's lost, but what she still has, and her first thought is "kal can't sleep without a lullaby, i need to find him and sing him to sleep, he must be so scared and alone" because she is scared, she is alone, she wants nothing more than for someone to sing her to sleep, but it will never happen again, and if she amounts to anything now that the future she was supposed to have is gone, she will do it for her little cousin, who will never even know krypton if not for her

but her cousin is not the little baby she used to babysit, he is a grown adult, older than kara is, and she wonders how the people who took care of him got him to sleep without knowing the kryptonian lullabies he was used to (how will she sleep now?), how quickly kal adapted to the lullabies of earth instead (did he forget the sound of his home entirely?), or who she would have to sing to sleep now that kal-el doesn't need her (who can she ever share with? will she forget, too?)

#Archovember Day 24 - Araripesuchus wegeneri

The notosuchians were were such a diverse group of pseudosuchians you’d think they came from the Triassic. But no, this group of “mammal-mimicking” crocodylomorphs lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous. One such Cretaceous notosuchian was Araripesuchus. This genus was widespread across the Southern Hemisphere, represented by at least 6 different species, mostly identified by their unique teeth. Today’s species is Araripesuchus wegeneri, the “Dog Croc.”

Living in Early Cretaceous Niger, Araripesuchus wegeneri appeared to be an omnivore, eating both plants and insects like grubs. Its common name “Dog Croc” is a reference to not only the dog-like shape of its skull, but also its unique caniniform teeth. Araripesuchus wegeneri fossils were found in a block with five skeletons packed together, so they may have even been social. All species of Araripesuchus had large eyes and thin osteoderms covering their body. They were likely more agile on land than in water, due to their long limbs. It could have possibly used its long legs to sprint to the water in order to flee predators, then used its muscular tail to swim.

There was a significant amount of pseudosuchian diversity in the Elrhaz Formation. Araripesuchus wegeneri would have lived alongside the similarly sized, duck-billed notosuchian Anatosuchus. It would have had to look out for the giant “Super Croc”, Sarcosuchus (perhaps the reason it had adapted for leaving the water so easily!) It would have also lived alongside the long-snouted fish-eater Stolokrosuchus. There were dinosaurs here as well, such as the iguanodont Lurdusaurus, the hadrosaur Ouranosaurus, the carcharodontosaurid Eocarcharia, the abelisaurid Kryptops, the spinosaurid Suchomimus, and the duck-billed sauropod Nigersaurus.

A dinosaur tooth of an indeterminate theropod from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. The tooth could potentially belong to a noasaurid, possibly Afromimus tenerensis, but it is impossible to say with any certainty. The short mesial carinae would exclude the abelisaurid Kryptops palaios.

Considered one of the earliest known abelisaurids, Kryptops is notable for the heavily textured surface of its maxilla, indicating that there was likely a covering, likely of keratin, attached firmly to its face. A cladistic analysis conducted by Paul Serano and Stephen Brusatte found Kryptops to be the most basal Abelisaurid known. A later study, however, by Matthew Carrano and colleagues, found Kryptops palaios to be a chimera, stating that its postcranial remains actually belong to a Carcharodontosaurid, possibly Eocarcharia dinops.
