Broken
Broken
Broken
Thinking it's my fault
It's my fault
My fault
Fault
What happened to you?
What's wrong with you?
Who wronged you?
You are wrong
Are wrong
Wrong
It's the anxiety of not having a safe place to land
A safe place
Safe place
Space
Looking out at Milnerton lighthouse
Wondering what anchors me
Trying not to sink
Not to be a deadweight
I'm sorry for failing you
You deserve better than this weak older version of you that just can't get it right
You fought so hard...just to become me
I messed you up even further, can't even look at you in the mirror.
I cut my hair short, and in layers, and I wear it curly, just like you did
Trying to have the strength you had
You were a superhero. You saved me.
I'm still trying to save me.
Searching for a beacon of hope
Searching
Trying
Attempting
Looking for a purpose beyond the horizon
Of every new day
Staring out over Table Bay looking for the answers in the soil, and in the wind, and in the ocean
But I'm stranded
Robben Island calls to me over the waters
The spirits of those lost in these waters haunt me, threaten to pull me down to find them
I can't find them though I strain my eyes for a glimpse of a memory, of their history
I'm trying to find us
I'm trying to find me
I'm stranded but so free
So free
Free.

Women in Film Challenge 2020: [29/52] Krotoa, dir. Roberta Durrant (South Africa, 2017)
My name is Krotoa, not Eva. I am a princess of the Goringhaikona tribe. Daughter of Ais, the daughter of Aaye. If I have any regret, it's that I realized too late that I helped you rape my country. You came here with your horses and your guns, and we still welcomed you. You bought us off with cheap trinkets and worthless promises. I believed that we could live in peace, that you would respect my people and my culture. You call us savages? You are the savages! You have stolen my country, but you will never steal my heritage.

Historical Indigenous Women & Figures [4]:
Yukie Chiri: talented transcriber and translator of Yukar (Ainu epic tales). Growing up bilingual and speaking both Ainu and Japanese, Chiri would later catch the attention of a Linguist, who helped her to transcribe, preserve, and publish multiple Ainu epic tales.
Krotoa: Niece of Chief Autshumato, and Khoisan translator for the officials of the Dutch East India Company in South Africa during the founding of the Cape Colony. Though the exact circumstances of how are unknown, Krotoa came to work in the household of Jan Van Riebeeck and became known as “Eva”, and gained a higher position within the Dutch hierarchy as she additionally served as a trading agent, ambassador for a high ranking chief and peace negotiator in time of war. She exemplified the dependency the Dutch had on the Khoisan in her homeland.
Bartolina Sisa: Woman known for being a leader against Spanish colonialism in Peru, she often took up arms in uprisings alongside other Aymara and Quecha. She was the commander of the siege of La Paz, though she was eventually captured and killed. International Indigenous Women’s day is celebrated on the day of her death in her honor.
Anacaona: Also known as “Golden Flower”, she was a Poet among the Taino, who also served as her brother’s advisor as Chief. She took multiple efforts to try make peace with the Spanish in Haiti, including the arranging of marriages. She was eventually killed by the Spanish, but is remembered today as an intelligent and kind leader.
Matoaka: More famously known as “Pocahontas”, Matoaka was the favorite daughter of Wahunsenacah, Chief of the Powhatan confederacy. Though the story of her saving of John Smith is myth and fabricated by Smith, she did indeed partake in multiple efforts to attempt peace with the English. According to Powhatan oral history, She married the warrior Kocoum & had a child with him before being kidnapped and taken to England.
Jennie Thlunaut: Prolific Tlingit artist and weaver, who is credited with being a major factor in keeping Tlingit Chilkat weaving alive. Her works and artistry have been celebrated by many, including the Smithsonian Institution and Harvard Museum of Natural History.
Elsa Laula Renberg: Saami activist, who wrote and published a 30-page pamphlet in Swedish that spoke about Saami struggles and oppression, making her the first Saami woman to have her works published. She later founded  the South Sámi Fatmomakka Association, which was the first Sámi activist organisation.
Toypurina: Famous for her opposition of Spanish missionaries & their forced assimilation of the Tongva in California, she was a medicine woman who participated in the planned 1785 rebellion against the Mission San Gabriel, where she recruited six of the eight villages which participated in the attack.

So I’ve talked a bit about how Afrikaans isn’t a colonizer language and is in fact an indigenous black African language but I feel like I haven’t explained why this is the case. There’s two main questions we have to answer: where did Afrikaans come from and why is it associated with the Boere?
Afrikaans has it’s earliest roots in the first indigenous people of South Africa to encounter the Dutch: the !Orana (the ! is a click and usually the word is spelled Korana but !Orana is more accurate) more specifically the Goringhaikona and Goringhaiqua clans who lived on the coast and had made contact with several other non-African groups prior to 1652, including the Dutch. This meant that some members of these clans had basic knowledge of some of these languages, most notably Autshumao, Nommoa and Krotoa.
This version of Dutch spoken by the interpreters would slowly be spread to the rest of the !Orana as the Dutch began to permanently settle unlike the previous traders who had arrived at the Cape, displacing them and forcing them into the European society; usually as slaves.
At the same time that this was happening the Dutch began to import slaves from across the colonized world, primarily: The Portuguese African colonies; Madagascar; India and Bangladesh; and the Malay peninsula. These peoples would work with the !Orana slaves which is what led to the creation of “Cape Dutch” which would later be called Afrikaans (literally African-ish). It was a creole language akin to Patois, Michif, Pidgin or Haitian Creole and if you wouldn’t say any of those languages are “colonizer language”, you should probably apply that to Afrikaans.
Now there is something which complicates this; white people. Everyone knows that the Boere forced Afrikaans on other indigenous peoples and it was very much a language associated with the colonizers because of that. However the people we call “Afrikaners” (which is a whole other can of worms that I could open) did not always speak “Afrikaans”. In fact up until the late 19th century, the Boere spoke what they called “High Dutch”, which was literally just Dutch.
This was to separate it from Afrikaans or Cape Dutch which was spoken by the “mixed” descendants of the various slave groups and was looked down upon.
Afrikaans was even referred to as a “Hotnotstaal” meaning “hotnots language”. Hotnot being a slur for “Coloured” people (i.e. the descendants of those slaves but that’s another another can of worms) which derives from “Hottentot” which was a slur for the “Khoena” ethnic group (which includes the !Orana as well as the Damara and the Namaqua in Namibia). The other term for Afrikaans is “Kitchen Dutch” which most likely refers to it’s usage in the kitchen by female slaves.
It was only during the late 19th century that a nationalistic fervour around the language began to be whipped up due to a three reasons: a) to prove that they had more right to the land than the British South Africans b) as a massive fuck you to the Dutch for not helping them during the Boer War and c) much of the lower classes had already adopted Afrikaans so shifting towards it seemed reasonable considering the last two reasons.
This form of Afrikaans was soon codified and made a lot more stringent than the mostly spoken form of Afrikaans that “Coloured” people at the Cape had knew for centuries at this point. Imagine if white people started speaking AAVE and then told you that not only is it their language but you were also speaking it wrong.
This process of appropriation culminated in the decade between the 2nd Boer War and the creation of the South African state, as Afrikaner nationalism was in it’s zenith and they began imposing it on all indigenous people as a “civilized language”.
TL;DR Afrikaans is an indigenous language to South Africa which means it deserves to be recognized as such and not thrown out with the bathwater because some whities decided to claim it HOWEVER the codified and “grammatically correct” version of Afrikaans is very much an oppressors language and should be criticized as such and it’s history as a language forced upon indigenous people should not be forgotten. Shit’s nuanced and confusing what do you know.

Hello, this is about your post of indigenous historical female figures. The Zulu are not native to South Africa, the natives are the Khoisan.
As a South African myself, I would like to nominate Krotoa (known as Eva) who was the niece of Autshumao, a Khoi leader and interpreter to the Dutch.
But aren't they still an Indigenous tribe? Like she still counts as Indigenous, yes? Maybe not to THAT specific area, though. Like that's the general theme of the photosets. Or dud I get their traditional endonym wrong, & should correct it? But thank you for the suggestion, if nothing else, I'll add her to the next photoset!

THIS WHOLE ARTICLE IS FUCKED. SAN ALSO KNOWN AS KHOI???? WE’RE TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE YOU ILLITERATE... *breathes* Okay apart from the absolutely disgusting artwork let’s explain what’s wrong with the article.
1. SAN AND KHOI ARE NOT INTERCHANGABLE! The San have been in South Africa for over 44.000 years whereas the Khoena (the actual name for the Khoi which isn’t based on the butchering of the name) are relatively recent migrants only arriving from the Horn of Africa around 2.100 years ago (for reference the first Bantu speakers arrived 1.800 years ago). THEY ARE NOT THE SAME! (Yes there’s an amount fluidity between the two cultures but that also applies to Bantu speaking peoples; the Xhosa have whole clans of people such as the Gqunkhwebe who are “genetically” Khoena but do not consider themselves so. If you conflate the former you also must include the latter).
2. Following from the last point, Autshumao, Krotoa and Nommoa (Doman’s actual name; the author uses Autshumao and Krotoa for Harry and Eva so I’m assuming they thought Doman sounded ethnic enough to be his Khoemana name) were not San! They were Khoekhoen from the Goringhaicona clan.
3. The language the author uses does not go into enough detail about the origins of Afrikaans and the exact modes of diffusion that led to its genesis. They don’t explain that the earliest written Afrikaans texts were from Muslim communities using Arabic script. They don’t go into its derogatory name (hotnotstaal - hotnots language; hotnot comes from hottenttot which was a slur for Khoekhoen) except for a brief mention of it being called a “kitchen language” (kombuis nederlands). They glaze over the fact that the Khoena and the San were also enslaved (in fact weirdly the person he quotes uses the phrase “the San, the Khoi and particularly the Slaves) as if a large proportion of Khoena weren’t enslaved too???
Like the quoted bits and the parts talking about Afrikaner nationalism are okay but everything before that is just... fucking weird and ahistorical and why would you put that picture as the picture of a fucking article which talks about colonialism and the forcing of one language on another by colonizers????

Tegenbeeld: ‘The Wardship of Others’
Tumblr media
